Summary

Christian preaching must prioritize clear understanding and spiritual transformation over rhetorical beauty or praise for the speaker. Saint Cyril first offers a general outline of doctrine before detailed analysis so that learners retain a coherent vision of the faith. Catechumens are called to reverent conduct, mutual care, and concern for absent members, expressing the Church’s life as one family rather than an anonymous gathering.

Otherwise, everything he said would simply be lost. This is something you know about us—about us, about us—when we give our talks. We are not concerned enough about whether what we say will remain in people’s hearts. God forgive us, and me first of all; we are satisfied merely to speak beautifully. Do you hear what I am saying? It is enough for us to speak beautifully and for people to tell us how beautifully we spoke. My beloved, this is sinful, it is sinful, and we shall have to give an account to God. We must be extremely careful about what we say. It does not matter if our words are plain, or if we include elements that perhaps do not create an impression

of rhetorical elegance in our talks, provided that our people understand what we are telling them. This is very important. And this is precisely what Saint Cyril is doing. He is a man who certainly combines theology with praxis, the active ascetic life, yet he also has a practical concern for his flock. Thus, he speaks both to the speaker and to the listener, or to the teacher and the student. It is easy for a teacher to tell a student, “Learn what I am teaching you.” But the teacher must also create the conditions that enable the student to learn. These conditions include the method of teaching and many other things necessary for the instruction to become a real lesson for the student. The student, for his part, must study, pay attention, and so forth. We may therefore say that learning has these two sides. Then there is also the matter of keeping what we learn and putting it into practice. Now, my beloved, if our faithful do not put into practice what we tell them, what can we do with them? What can we do? Of course, we may bear responsibility on one point: whether we taught them correctly and

whether we keep reminding them, because continual repetition is also part of teaching. It does not matter that I once gave a talk on a particular subject; I must return to it again and again, following the method of Holy Scripture. Scripture returns to the same subject, perhaps through another example or another event, but it returns to it. We too, therefore, must return to these things, so that what another person hears may become familiar to him and, in time, he may begin to observe it. John Chrysostom says: “It is my task to instruct you; it is not my task to make you believe.” Pay close attention to this. It is your task to be persuaded, provided, of course, that I have created the conditions that make persuasion possible. Without question.

Beyond that, what can I do for you if you are not persuaded, if you do not wish to put the teaching into practice, or if your disposition is evil? At that point, the fault is yours. In any case, my beloved, let all of us pay close attention to this: the two sides go together, here in our talks and everywhere else, in every age. We must both learn what we hear and keep it. Only then shall we truly be able to become good Christians. “Do not think that these are ordinary gatherings. Those too are good and worthy of respect, but if we are careless today, we can learn tomorrow. Yet if the teachings concerning the washing of regeneration are being delivered in their proper order and are neglected today, when will the deficiency be corrected? Think of this as a season for planting. If we do not dig and deepen the soil,

can something once planted badly be planted properly at another time? Think of catechesis as a building. Unless we dig deeply and lay a foundation, unless we join the stones together in their proper order and bind the structure together, so that no gap is left and the building does not become unstable, all our earlier labor is useless. Stone must follow stone in proper order, and corner must fit with corner. The excess must be cut away, and in this manner a perfect building must rise. So too, we bring you stones for the building up of knowledge.” There are, he says, beautiful and good teachings that you may hear again at another time if you neglect them now—good things that you discuss among yourselves

and may have another opportunity to hear. But here we are now giving catechesis and speaking about the washing of regeneration, that is, about Baptism, as well as several other matters that he will discuss further on and that I shall explain to you more particularly. Where else will you hear these things? He uses an argument that any teacher might use. If you plant something badly, he says, will you uproot it so that you can plant it all over again? If you are laying one stone upon another to construct a building, how will you build unless each stone is placed upon the one beneath it? Will you leave a whole row empty and then place other stones above the gap? That is impossible. What must happen, then? One stone must be laid upon another. So it is here as well:

the subjects must follow one another in order. Order here means connection. If you come one time and hear certain things, but do not come the next time and so fail to hear what is taught, you cannot gain a proper understanding of what we are saying here. This is entirely true. Just as no one can learn to read and write if he is absent from school, so no one can gain sound theological knowledge of the content of his faith without systematic work—work done in proper sequence, as Saint Cyril says, with each subject connected to the next. In other words, I must learn one thing after another, without absences and without interruptions.

In other words, I too shall say it this way: My brothers and sisters, let us not be absent. Let us not be absent. What we miss on a previous occasion may never be made up—perhaps not ever. Pay attention. Let us not say, “I shall read it somewhere.” Where? When? When will we do so? Let us therefore not be absent, so that we may have a complete picture of the content of our catechesis. I believe that all of you have now understood that what we are doing here is systematic catechesis. We too are following Saint Cyril. Indeed, all our other subjects are nothing but systematic catechesis. And here he says these beautiful words: “You must hear fully about the living God; you must hear fully about Judgment, about Christ, and about the Resurrection, as well as many other subjects presented one after another in proper order—

subjects now mentioned separately, but later presented in harmony with one another. If you do not join each one to the next and remember both the earlier and the later teachings, the builder may build, but the structure you possess will be unstable.” If you do not arrange these things properly within your understanding, the catechist may be building and the teacher may be explaining them, but what can he do for you when you attend one time and stay away the next? He speaks well and builds correctly, systematically, and methodically, but you are not doing methodical and proper work within yourself. What, then, shall we hear? We shall speak about the living God, about Christ, about Judgment, and about the Resurrection. My beloved, the principal subjects of our theology are many and great. Yet there is a strange idea

that “theology belongs to theologians and priests.” That idea must not exist. Theology belongs to the people of God. Would you like me to prove this to you? When we read the deeply theological and extremely difficult homilies of the Fathers, those homilies have become objects of study for theologians. If we were to suggest that our faithful, our people, should read them, we might say, “Oh, these things are far too difficult. How could ordinary people understand them?” But do not forget that the Fathers delivered these homilies to the people. The Fathers were not producing works in some sacred academy. They did not sit in an academy writing dissertations and studies

to submit to a university. They prepared their studies for the people, which means that the people understood them. Why did they understand? Because the people were being instructed and formed. When we speak theologically to our people, our people become theological. It is perfectly natural. Let me offer you another argument. You know that controversies over heresies involved not only the bishops but also the people, and there was, of course, a great deal of conflict. Today, if a theological question arises, it remains solely at the level of the theologians. People say, “Leave it alone; they are discussing it,” and nothing more. The people remain uninvolved. In those days, the people participated. They raised their voices, rejected whatever was false, and initiated theological discussions

just as we today initiate discussions about social, political, or economic issues. In those days, the people—the people of God—opened theological discussions. This means that we have departed from theology and retained only a few little practical matters. This is wrong. For this reason, we are accused—perhaps with some justification—of having declined into mere pietism. We must leave this pietism behind: the idea that we simply keep a few commandments and then everything is fine. No, my beloved. Here I shall use the expression of a contemporary theologian: we have arrived at a loveless Christianity, a Christianity without ardent love. Today I say, “I keep the commandments,” yet I have no ardent love for Christ. But keeping the commandments—which is a means, not the goal—must

lead me to ardent love for Christ. All this has happened precisely because theology has departed from our people, and theology must return to them. We must therefore learn all these things, the whole content of our faith, as accurately as we can. Do not tell me, “This is a matter of formal education.” Do not say that to me. There are simple people who understand extremely well. They may not be able to explain these things to you, but they understand them. I remember when we first began these talks at Saint Achillios, some people told me that I spoke in a way that was somewhat difficult. I do not really accept that I speak so difficultly, but let us suppose that they were right. Yet one thing impressed them and contradicted their own description. They themselves told me this; I had not noticed it.

They said, “And yet, we see uneducated women sitting in the very front, listening to you, and they never miss a talk.” If these women did not understand, why would they come and sit in the front to listen? For what reason? It means that something within them receives what is said; something is happening, and they do understand. This shows that formal education is not the essential requirement for receiving theology. It is good to be educated, of course, but education is not everything. If education were everything, how did the Apostles, who were uneducated, receive Pentecost? To deny that simple people with very little education can understand the truths

of the Word of God would be to deny the power of the Holy Spirit. Does the Holy Spirit not have the power and ability to illumine these people so that they may receive these truths? Would only the educated be able to understand them? Do you not think that this would be blasphemous and mistaken? We must learn everything—the entire content of our faith. We must learn who Christ is, learn about the life to come and about Judgment, learn about the Resurrection of the dead, learn ecclesiology—everything concerning the Church—and learn what the Church is. These are important, fundamental, and vital truths. How vital are they? They determine—I emphasize this—they determine our practical life. Much later, Saint Cyril will say:

“The root”—listen to this—“the root of every good work is the Resurrection of the dead.” Do you hear that faith in the Resurrection of the dead is the root of every good work? When I know that I shall rise again, that knowledge creates within me the conditions for virtue and good works. What creates them? Knowing that I shall rise again. This is very important. Notice something else he says: “The subjects now mentioned separately will later be presented in harmony with one another.” He follows a method that I have already discussed with you in an earlier talk. A little further on, he will devote an entire catechesis to summarizing

what he intends to teach in the catecheses that follow. He will say a few words about Christ’s Resurrection and the Resurrection of the dead. In another paragraph, he will speak about the body. He will address several such theological subjects, giving each of them only ten lines. Do you know why? Because later he will analyze them at length—so extensively that a single subject may occupy one or even two catecheses. Why does he do this? Because he understands—and this is an exceptionally sound teaching method—that when we intend to speak about many subjects in detail, the listener may become lost in an ocean of analysis and, in the end, fail to gain an overall picture.

We must therefore begin by giving an overall picture. As I have told you, we need a block diagram, a diagram of the whole. Take, for example, an explanation of how a car works. If we immediately add all the details, the listener becomes overwhelmed. What will he understand? Instead, we draw a few boxes and say, “Combustion takes place here; then the power passes from there to here; from here it goes there; and the motion is produced there.” That is all. He connects five boxes and understands that this function occurs here and another function there. This is called a block diagram. The listener has gained an overall picture. Once he understands the general operation, we can explain the details without overwhelming him. This is a good method. In the same way, my beloved, teachers and instructors who wish to teach a subject—ecclesiology, for example, and the question of what the Church is—can proceed in this way.

The Church is this, this, this, and this. Five brief statements provide a general diagram, and from there we proceed to our detailed analysis. As I have told you, this is what Saint Cyril does. I now move on to the twelfth paragraph: “When the catechesis is being delivered, if a catechumen questions you about what the teachers have said, tell nothing to one who remains outside. For we are entrusting you with a Mystery and with the hope of the age to come. Keep the Mystery for Him who rewards. Let no one say to you, ‘What harm is there if I too should learn?’”

Those sick with fever ask for wine; but if it is given indiscriminately, it produces delirium, and two evils result: the sick person perishes, and the physician is slandered. In the same way, if a catechumen hears these things from one of the faithful, the catechumen falls into confusion. For he does not understand what he has heard; he criticizes the teaching and mocks what has been said, while the faithful person is condemned as a betrayer. You are already standing at the boundary. Take care not to disclose these things—not because they are unworthy of being spoken, but because the hearer is unworthy to receive them. You too were once a catechumen, and I did not disclose to you what lay ahead. When you have learned through experience the height of the teachings, then you will understand that catechumens are not yet worthy to hear them.” This is truly a very important subject. You, he says, are no longer simply a catechumen; you are one who is being illumined.

You are on the threshold of becoming one of the faithful. That is, you are no longer simply a catechumen, but neither are you yet one of the faithful. You stand at the threshold; you are preparing for illumination. Take care: the catechumens outside will ask you, “What are they telling you in there?” Tell them nothing. For if you do, they are not yet able to weigh these things properly. They may ridicule them or reject them, and then two evils will result: they themselves will be harmed, and you will be condemned for acting wrongly. Even the faith may be slandered because, as they will say, it teaches this or that.

Do you know how Christ puts it? Listen to what Christ says in the Gospel: “Do not cast your pearls before swine or dogs.” For if you cast pearls before swine, they will discover that they are not acorns but pearls. Animals—swine—do not understand the value of pearls. They will even become angry because you threw them pearls instead of acorns. After trampling the pearls underfoot, they will turn on you as well and knock you down. This means: do not disclose the Mysteries of the faith to people who are unworthy to hear them. Unfortunately, we do not observe this today.

We must admit this. We often speak about the Mysteries of our faith in ordinary conversations because we imagine that nothing needs to remain confidential anymore. The teaching is not kept confidential because it cannot withstand scrutiny. The teaching can withstand it; people cannot. Christ’s teaching is a dazzling light. What did I say—dazzling? Yes. To which eyes? To diseased eyes, light is dazzling; it blinds them. But the light is not at fault because your eyes have been blinded. Light remains light. Therefore, my beloved, let us be very careful. We should not tell outsiders certain things that belong especially to our spiritual life, or even to our spiritual experience.

That is the point. Here I do not wish to speak to you merely about great and profound theological matters, but about matters of spiritual experience. For example, do not tell others what your spiritual father has told you. Never tell it anywhere. Besides, this is not permitted. Just as the spiritual father is obliged to preserve the confidentiality of what the person confessing tells him, so the person confessing is also obliged to preserve the confidentiality of what the spiritual father tells him. For when someone comes out of Confession and says, “My spiritual father told me this and that,” what happens? I will give you a very small and simple example. You, my brother, receive Holy Communion every week. You do well. Twice a week? You do well. Saint Basil the Great says that we receive Holy Communion three—

—or four times a week. “We receive,” he says, “on Saturday or Sunday, and on whatever feast days may fall during the week.” He says that we may receive Holy Communion four or five times a week. Saint Basil the Great says this, and rightly so. Others see you receiving Holy Communion, and that is right. But then they ask you, “When do you fast? Does your spiritual father know how often you fast?” Let us suppose they know nothing about the matter. If you tell them, “My spiritual father told me to fast for only one day,” what will you do to them? You will harm them. This is what we were saying earlier about confidential matters. You will harm them because they do not understand, and they will say that…

…repulsive thing—which I truly find repulsive: “What, did trahana soup take precedence over Holy Communion? Did soup take precedence over Holy Communion?” My brother, I eat trahana to nourish myself. Should I not receive Holy Communion so that my soul and body may be sustained? Holy Communion is food for both soul and body, because my body will rise again and is nourished by the medicine of immortality, the food of immortality. But you do not understand this. What, then, am I to say to you? Of course, I will not hide the fact that I receive frequently, because I must help you understand that you too should receive frequently. Some people go from one church to another so that they can receive Holy Communion often. But receive in their own village? Never! A most devout man once came to me and said, “Receive Holy Communion in my village? Impossible.”

I would have given him an answer, though it was not said aloud. Many times people cannot bear to hear certain things. Often we remain silent—not because we fail to understand, but because we say to ourselves, “The other person cannot bear it, so I will say nothing. Let it pass.” Normally, however, he should receive Holy Communion in his own village. “They call us fools,” this truly devout soul told me. So what if they call you a fool? They will see from your deeds that you are not a fool. At some point, people’s understanding of Holy Communion must change, though it must change gradually. But you should not tell them how you fast. Say instead, “My brother, what can I tell you? Go to Holy Confession and do whatever your spiritual father tells you.” The medicines are all there in the pharmacy, but they are not all intended for every patient.

The doctor decides through the prescription how the medicines are to be administered to each patient. That is what you should say. A person may not be ready to hear that someone fasts for only one day—especially a person who abstains from oil for fifteen days. When such a person comes and tells me that he abstains from oil for fifteen days, I will say, “No, not fifteen days; let it be fewer.” “Oh, no, no, no!” Very well, since you insist, keep the fifteen-day fast from oil. I will tell him, “Keep it.” He will come back, and come back again. Once he begins returning regularly, I will begin helping him understand how he ought to proceed in this matter. From all this, and from the example I have given you, you understand that we must not disclose the Mysteries of our Church to people who do not understand. They will trample them underfoot, laugh at them, and mock what we tell them. The same applies to other matters of abstinence. Just try telling people—try telling them, you married couples—

Tell them, you married couples, that you practice abstinence—and not only during a fasting season, when the Church requires it, but even beyond the fasting seasons. Glory to God, the ideal for a married person is to live in abstinence as much as possible. If you tell an outsider that you abstain from marital relations with your spouse, he will say, “Then why did you get married?” But, my brother, I did not marry merely for sexual relations. I did not. This, however, is a spiritual matter, and the other person does not understand it. The person who mocks it from the outside today will understand once he too enters the way of God. As you can see, then, my beloved, we cannot tell everything to everyone.

Not everyone has reached the same level of formation. These things are progressive, and that is how they must be. But let us move on to the next paragraph, the thirteenth paragraph: “All you whose names have been enrolled have become sons and daughters of one mother. When you enter before the hour of the exorcisms, let each of you speak of things conducive to piety. And if one of you is absent, seek him out.” Let us pause here briefly. This is a practical point, a matter of conduct. I must say this because, whenever we speak about conduct, some might perhaps accuse us of mere pietism.

They would be wrong, because our conduct is the fruit of the spiritual life. If our conduct is not good, then what benefit do we receive from the so-called spiritual life? It is only the appearance of spiritual life, because our cultivation is revealed through our conduct: our everyday conduct—how we speak, how we laugh, how we sit, how we eat, and so forth. This applies, of course, both in the common spaces of the Church and in our homes, our workplaces, and everywhere else. Therefore, let us pay attention to our conduct. If you like, it will serve as a herald—

—drawing another person near to Christ. He will perceive that our conduct is different. I say again: it will serve as a herald, as an advertisement, though of course we do not behave this way for publicity. We do so in order that another person may be drawn to Christ. Here Saint Cyril addresses a practical matter.

The faithful—or rather, those preparing to become faithful, the catechumens—used to gather, or were required to gather, in one place. What place was that? It was the Church. Many things had to take place there: catechesis, Baptism, the exorcisms, and so forth. All these things would take place in a single space where a certain number of people gathered.

Whenever people gather in one place, there is always a danger that poor conduct among them will produce something ugly and undesirable. Listen, then, to these words and consider how necessary they are for us as well in the place of worship, the church building. Listen carefully. He says that all of you who were enrolled in the Church’s registers have been born as the children—sons and daughters—of one mother. That mother is the Church. But take care. When you enter before the hour of the exorcisms—that is—

—can everyone leave home at exactly the same hour? One person arrives earlier and another later. Consequently, they must all gather and wait, just as you see here: one person comes an hour early, while another arrives at the last moment because of his responsibilities. When you gather, he says, take care that no disorder arises; let each person conduct himself properly. What does that mean? “Let each of you speak of things conducive to piety.” Let everyone speak about what pertains to piety and also conduct himself in a manner consistent with piety. “And if one of you is absent, seek him out.” Here is the first point: when you notice that someone is missing—

—go and look for him. So-and-so did not come. Why did he not come? We will go to his house—not necessarily at that very moment, but afterward. Is he ill? What has happened? Let me pause here. You know that the congregation of a church—or, better, of a parish—has now become anonymous. If the Church Fathers, especially the ancient Fathers of our Church, heard this description today, they would lament the state of modern Christians. What do you think the sins of modern Christians are? What do you think? They are the things that truly abolish ecclesiology. That is why I told you earlier that we need to know ecclesiology as well. This is a great matter. What do we say?

“I am going to church, I will say my prayers, and then I will return home.” That is wrong, my brother. You are a member of a whole, the Body of Christ. The people with you inside the church are not people who have nothing to do with you. They directly concern you. Whatever happens to them happens to you as well, affects you, or ought to affect you. Therefore, other people must not remain a matter of indifference to you. Of course, this does not mean that when the service ends we must begin asking everyone, “How are you? What is new? How are things going? How is everyone at home?” We often fall into conversation and say such things. Those things are fine too, but that is not the heart of the matter. We must truly care about the other person, our neighbor. Did he come? Did he not come? Is he hungry? Is he thirsty? Is his spiritual life going well?

That is the point. In those days, the faithful gathered at various centers—what we would now call parishes. These were small circles, and the members could look after one another. I have thought about this, though I do not know what you think. Why, for example, should Saint Charalambos be such a large church with two or three priests? Why should there not be three smaller churches within the parish of Saint Charalambos, so that each priest could serve in one of them and, being responsible for it, watch over his small flock? Why should Saint Achillios have two or three priests, and Saint Nicholas two, three, or four? Why should there not be smaller churches dependent, if you like—and to use modern arrangements—upon one central church?

Saint Teleianos is dependent upon the Church of the Archangels, but it is a small sub-parish here. If the priest here were permanent, he could watch over the fifty or one hundred people who worship here. Imagine this small space, where everyone has his own place, and we can say, “This chair is empty. So-and-so is missing. Why might he be absent? Has he been absent repeatedly?” This is the concern we ought to have. Today we do not have it because we have lost our formation in ecclesiology. It does not even occur to us that we should care for others, especially for their spiritual life. There is a Canon of the Church which says that a person who does not receive Holy Communion is to be excluded from the Church.

It creates—listen, listen, listen—it causes disorder, he says. Today we think that those who go to receive Holy Communion are causing disorder, while the sensible people are those who never even leave their seats. And yet, the disorder was for someone not to receive Holy Communion. So when the others saw that you did not receive, they would ask you, “Why did you not receive?” And the person who did not receive had to explain why he had not received, why he was not receiving, and for what reason. Please listen: there is a Canon of our Church that expresses the concern the faithful should have for one another. That is why he says, “If any one of you is absent, seek him out.” Is someone not present? Look for him. Where has he gone? What happened to him? “Or, if you had been invited to a banquet…”

“…would you not have waited for the other invited guests?” If you were invited to a banquet, would you not wait for all the others who had also been invited? Would you sit down at once and begin eating? “If you had a brother, would you not seek your brother’s good?” If you had a brother according to the flesh, would you not seek what was good for him? “Do not busy yourself, then, with useless matters: not with what the city has done, nor what the village has done, nor what the king has done, nor what the bishop has done, nor what the priest has done. Look upward. Your time requires this.” Why do you sit there occupying yourselves with things that do not concern you? When you gather here in the Church, within the Church building, he says, do not speak about useless things. Do not ask, “What has the city done?”

News from the city: “Tell us, what is happening in town today? What did the mayor say? What did the deputy mayor say? What is happening with this matter or that one?” What did the village do? What did the king do? What did the bishop do? What did the priest do? That, he says, is gossip. When you come here, you must not gossip. No, you do not need such things. “Look upward. Your time requires this.” What your time requires is that you look upward. Do not concern yourself with all those other things. Concern yourself only with your spiritual formation. This is why God says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” You have seen the faithful serving, he says...

...free from anxiety and without worldly cares. Do not say, “Look how carefree they are, how freely they conduct themselves.” This expression “without worldly cares” means that they move with ease. In other words, you see that a believer may speak somewhat more easily and freely. They stand on secure ground.

They know what they have received; they know what has been given to them; they possess grace. “But you are still poised at the turning point of the balance, whether to accept or not to accept.” You are at the point where the balance may tip either way: you may accept or reject. In other words, you are still weak. Take care: you cannot behave like those who are already firmly established in the faith. Do not resent those who enjoy this freedom from anxiety.

“Embrace fear.” For now, reverent fear is what you need. Guard yourself. The time will come when you too will be able to conduct yourself with greater freedom. Now we come to the fourteenth paragraph: “And when the exorcism takes place”—it appears that each person underwent it in turn, one by one—“until the others who are to be exorcised arrive, let the men be with the men and the women with the women.” Pay attention: the men, he says, are to remain with the men, and the women with the women. Therefore, it is not anti-feminist to say...

...the men on this side and the women on that side. Though this arrangement has existed for many years, no man goes over to the women’s side, yet many women go to the men’s side—and I consider that brazen. Madam, has any man come over from there to your side? Then why have you come over here? Are you trying to show how clever you are by standing there? So this is not an anachronism, my dear friends. There is a danger involved. And if we do not take care over certain things, what happens then? He says here, “Men with men, and women with women.” Listen to the beautiful example he gives. I had never noticed it before. What did I say? I had never noticed it. What have we truly noticed in Holy Scripture, my dear friends? It contains so many things—what can one notice first?

I went to Holy Scripture, saw it for myself, and marveled. He says, “Remember Noah’s ark.” Now I need to tell you how the account of Noah’s ark is worded: “Noah entered, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives.” Listen to how Holy Scripture puts it. I have written it down: “And Noah entered, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark.” As we know, there were Noah and his wife, his three sons, and their three wives. But listen to how it is phrased. It says that Noah entered the ark with his sons, though one might expect it to say, “Noah with his wife.” Then it mentions his wife together with his daughters-in-law.

Immediately, it presents an image of separation. And he says: the Church is an ark, and Noah’s ark is indeed regarded as a type of the Church. Do you see how Noah entered, with his wife, his sons, and his daughters-in-law, separately? Someone might say, “Come now, they were relatives, after all! Noah had his wife, and his sons had their wives.” No. The men were on one side and the women on the other. Do you see? Just as this type shows Noah, his wife, his sons, and his daughters-in-law entering separately, so you too will enter the Church separately. And he explains: “For although the ark was one and its door was shut, nevertheless everything was arranged in due order.” Although the ark was one and the door was closed against the flood...

...everything within it, he says, was arranged and separated. “Although the Church is closed and everyone is inside, let everything nevertheless be kept distinct: men with men and women with women.” Although the Church is closed and we are all inside the Church, the groups are still kept separate: men with men and women with women. Why? For the sake of prayer. It is what the Apostle Paul also says: do not let freedom become an opportunity for the flesh. Listen to how Saint Cyril puts it: “Let not the cause of salvation become a pretext for perdition.” You have entered the Church for the great cause of your salvation; do not let that very thing become a pretext for your perdition—that is, an occasion for your destruction.

This is very beautiful: “The cause is good; you sit near one another, but let the passions remain far away. Let the men, while seated, have a useful book: let one read and another listen.” When you gather and wait for the whole work to begin, until all the faithful have assembled, then, he says, the men must always remain separate from the women.

One should read within a small circle, and another should listen. “Let the men, while seated, have a useful book: let one read and another listen. And if there is no book, let one pray and another speak about something useful.” One person may say his prayer by himself, while farther away another says something edifying within a small circle of brothers.

Very beautiful. “And let the assembly of virgins gather in the same way, either chanting or reading quietly.” The virgins, the young women, should do the same: either chant or read quietly, in a low voice, “so that their lips may speak, but other ears may not hear. For I do not permit a woman to speak in church.” This is also what the Apostle Paul says. “And let the married women imitate them in the same way.” The married women should do likewise. Take note that we find this in the ancient Church. Thank you.

Quietly, quietly. How did the men and women sit inside the church? The women were divided into groups: widows, married women, virgins, and unmarried women. At the front were the children—the boys on the men’s side and the little girls on the women’s side—and there were deacons and deaconesses who watched over the small children so that they would not cause disorder. In other words, the gathering of the faithful inside the church was well ordered. “And let the married woman pray; let her lips move, but let her voice not be heard.” Let her pray, but without making noise and disturbing others, “so that a Samuel may come forth, so that your barren soul may give birth to salvation when God has heard you. For the name Samuel means ‘God has heard.’” Here he recalls the story of Samuel’s mother, Hannah, who had gone to the temple—or rather, not to the temple, but to the Tabernacle—and...

Only her mouth was speaking; no sound was heard, only her lips were moving. The high priest therefore took her to be drunk and sent a servant to drive her away. But she said, “High priest of God, I am not drunk; I am pouring out my pain before God.” Her pain was that she longed for God to give her a child, Samuel. In any case, my dear friends, as you have understood—and I will not proceed to the next paragraph—from these details Saint Cyril gives us here, he is teaching us how the faithful ought to conduct themselves inside the church. If we pay attention to all these things and put them into practice, do you know what a beautiful congregation we will have? An exemplary congregation. Why do you think people do not go to church today?

Of course, that is part of it, but in this case are there not also excuses? Someone says, “Women enter half-dressed.” Another says, “The chanters chant in a manner foreign to the spirit of worship.” Another says, “The priest conducts himself in such-and-such a way while serving the Divine Liturgy; he has no restraint,” and so forth. When the parish council members talk—a common failing—when they talk during the Divine Liturgy, how unseemly it is! Or they count money, and you hear the coins clinking during the Divine Liturgy or the sermon. All these things create a very ugly impression. Or someone enters wearing shoes with heels—even men today wear certain shoes with large heels made of wood, I suppose; I do not know, they must be wooden or something like that, because they strike...

...the tiles of the church floor very noisily. My dear friends, all these matters are important. A woman goes to venerate the iconostasis while worship is taking place. Madam, that is why there are icons at the front. Venerate them there and do not go up to the iconostasis, because everyone will turn to look at you and you will distract them. These are matters of discernment—matters, if I may say so, of liturgical formation. We have no liturgical formation; we do not. In Europe, Roman Catholics have special clothing to wear when they go to church. For once, I would say they do well. Their reasoning is: “We have special attire for the theater or for receptions, so we should also have special attire for the Divine Liturgy.” Certainly.

I would not want to say that we should have special attire, because afterward a person might take it off, dress half-naked, and run off to dances. No. A believer may go to church in the clothes he already has, provided they are modest; and both the clothes worn in church and those worn on Sunday afternoon should be modest. So we lack this liturgical formation. From the moment we enter the church building, how should we walk? How should we light our candle? Where should we go and stand? How should we sit? Of course, sometimes we may need to say something to the person beside us. We should say it briefly, without disturbing anyone or causing problems for those around us. Do you not think it is time for us to begin reflecting on all these things?

Brothers and sisters, you who are here are like salt. If you, as the salt, take your proper place within your parishes, what do you think will happen? Do you not think that little by little you will begin to transform the whole atmosphere of your parishes? This is very important. And one more thing, my dear friends, and then we shall finish. However we consider the matter of liturgical formation, although it belongs to the Church, allow me to say that it begins at home. As parents, I earnestly beg you—I appeal to your love—help your children acquire this liturgical formation. When you are parents of very young children and you watch them but let them wander about unattended...

...inside the church, roaming all over the place, that shows poor liturgical formation. But if you keep a small stool in your car—or, if you do not have a car, carry a folding one, perhaps even letting the child carry it—and open it so that the child may sit there in front of you while you watch over him, then you are laying the foundations of liturgical formation.

We need this liturgical formation so greatly, because it truly expresses the liturgical spirit—something so authentic and precious in our Orthodoxy, something admired by all, yet tarnished by our own conduct and manner. This spirit will shine forth again, enlighten people, and reveal that Orthodox worship truly is...

heavenly worship: the God of heaven is worshipped here on earth.

Εκκλησία είναι αυτό και αυτό και αυτό και αυτό. Πέντε λόγια, ένα γενικό διάγραμμα. Τώρα, από εκεί κάνουμε τις αναλύσεις μας. Και αυτό το κάνει, όπως σας είπα, ο Άγιος Κύριλλος. Προχωρώ στη δωδεκάτη παράγραφο. «Ὅτε τοίνυν ἡ κατήχησις λέγεται, ἐάν σε κατηχούμενος ἐξετάζῃ τί εἰρήκασιν οἱ διδάσκοντες, μηδὲν λέγε τῷ ἔξω· μυστήριον γάρ σοι παραδίδομεν καὶ ἐλπίδα μέλλοντος αἰῶνος. Τήρησον τὸ μυστήριον τῷ μισθαποδότῃ. Μή ποτέ σοί τις εἴπῃ· τί βλάπτει, ἐὰν κἀγὼ μάθω;

τον αναζητήσατε. Ο τάδε δεν ήλθε. Γιατί δεν ήλθε; Θα πάμε σπίτι του, αν όχι αυτή τη στιγμή, αλλά μετά θα πάμε σπίτι του. Είναι άρρωστος; Τι συμβαίνει; Εδώ λίγο να μείνω. Ξέρετε πια ότι το εκκλησίασμα μιας εκκλησίας, μιας ενορίας καλύτερα, έχει γίνει ανώνυμο. Αυτή τη στιγμή, αν άκουαν αυτόν τον χαρακτηρισμό οι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας, ιδίως οι αρχαίοι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας, θα ελεεινολογούσαν τους συγχρόνους χριστιανούς. Τι νομίζετε ότι είναι τα αμαρτήματα των συγχρόνων χριστιανών; Τι νομίζετε; Εκείνα που πραγματικά καταργούν την εκκλησιολογία. Γι’ αυτό σας είπα προηγουμένως ότι έχουμε ανάγκη να ξέρουμε και εκκλησιολογία. Μέγα θέμα αυτό. Τι λέμε;

«Πάω στην εκκλησία, θα κάνω την προσευχή μου και θα γυρίσω στο σπίτι μου». Λάθος, αδελφέ μου. Είσαι μέλος ενός συνόλου, του σώματος του Χριστού. Εκείνοι που είναι μαζί σου μέσα στην εκκλησία δεν είναι πρόσωπα αδιάφορα σε σένα. Είναι πρόσωπα που άμεσα σε ενδιαφέρουν. Κάθε τι που συμβαίνει σε αυτούς συμβαίνει και σε σένα ή έχει αντίκτυπο σε σένα ή οφείλει να έχει αντίκτυπο σε σένα. Δεν πρέπει λοιπόν να μένουν τα άλλα πρόσωπα αδιάφορα σε σένα. Όχι βεβαίως ότι, όταν τελειώσει η εκκλησία, θα αρχίσουμε να λέμε στον άλλον: «Τι γίνεσαι; Τι νέα; Πώς πας; Στο σπίτι σου τι κάνουν;» Ως συνήθως πιάνουμε κουβέντα και λέμε αυτά. Καλά, και αυτά μπορούμε να τα πούμε. Δεν είναι εκεί το πράγμα. Αλλά να ενδιαφερθούμε για τον άλλον, τον πλησίον μας. Ήρθε; Δεν ήρθε; Πεινάει; Διψάει; Πάει καλά στην πνευματική του ζωή;

Αυτό. Και τότε οι πιστοί, σε κάθε κέντρο που συνεκεντρούντο, αυτό που θα λέγαμε σήμερα με έναν σύγχρονο όρο ενορία, ήταν μικροί κύκλοι και μπορούσαν ο ένας τον άλλο να τον παρακολουθεί. Είναι κάτι που το έχω σκεφτεί, δεν ξέρω πώς το βλέπετε. Γιατί να υπάρχει, π.χ., ο Άγιος Χαράλαμπος, τόσο μεγάλη εκκλησία, και να μην είναι στην ενορία του Αγίου Χαραλάμπους, πόσοι ιερείς είναι, δύο, τρεις, τρεις μικρότερες εκκλησίες, και μπορεί ο καθένας μετά να ιερουργεί, αφού θα είναι μόνος του, να επιτηρεί το μικρό του ποίμνιο; Γιατί ο Άγιος Αχίλλιος να έχει δύο, τρεις ιερείς, ο Άγιος Νικόλαος να έχει δύο, τρεις, τέσσερις ιερείς και να μην είναι μικρές, μικρότερες εκκλησίες, να εξαρτώνται από μια κεντρική, αν το θέλετε, να πάρω και τα σύγχρονα δεδομένα, από μια κεντρική εκκλησία;

από εδώ οι άνδρες, από εδώ οι γυναίκες. Γιατί, αν και δεν είναι καινούργιο αυτό, από πολλά χρόνια τώρα, ενώ κανένας άνδρας δεν πηγαίνει από την πλευρά των γυναικών, πολλές γυναίκες όμως, το θεωρώ αυθάδεια αυτό, πηγαίνουν από την πλευρά των ανδρών. Κυρά μου, ήρθε άνδρας από εκεί πέρα σε εσάς; Εσύ γιατί ήρθες από εδώ πέρα; Τι, θα κάνεις την έξυπνη από εκεί πέρα που είσαι; Οπότε δεν είναι, αγαπητοί μου, αναχρονισμός αυτό. Είναι ένας κίνδυνος. Και αν δεν προσέξουμε μερικά πράγματα, τότε τι γίνεται; Λέει λοιπόν εδώ πέρα: «Ἄνδρες μετὰ ἀνδρῶν, γυναῖκες μετὰ γυναικῶν». Ακούστε ένα ωραίο παράδειγμα που έχει. Και ουδέποτε το είχα προσέξει. Και τι είπα; Ουδέποτε το είχα προσέξει. Τι έχουμε προσέξει από την Αγία Γραφή, αγαπητοί μου; Έχει τόσα πολλά πράγματα, που τι να πρωτοπροσέξεις;

Το στόμα μόνο λαλούσε, έτσι, φωνή δεν ακουγότανε, τα χείλη της, τα χείλη της. Και τότε την εξέλαβε ο αρχιερεύς ότι είναι μεθυσμένη και έστειλε κάποιον υπηρέτη να τη διώξει. Και εκείνη λέει: «Αρχιερεύ του Θεού, δεν είμαι μεθυσμένη, αλλά τον πόνο μου λέω στον Θεό». Και ο πόνος της ήταν να της δώσει ο Θεός ένα παιδί, τον Σαμουήλ. Πάντως, αγαπητοί μου, όπως αντιληφθήκατε, για να μην προχωρήσω στην παρακάτω παράγραφο, όπως αντιληφθήκατε με αυτά τα στοιχεία που μας δίνει εδώ ο Άγιος Κύριλος, μας λέγει πώς πρέπει οι πιστοί να κινούνται μέσα στην εκκλησία. Αν όλα αυτά τα πράγματα τα προσέξουμε και τα βάλουμε σε εφαρμογή, τότε ξέρετε τι ωραίο εκκλησίασμα θα έχουμε; Υποδειγματικό εκκλησίασμα. Τι νομίζετε, γιατί σήμερα δεν πάνε οι άνθρωποι στην εκκλησία;

Δεν θα ήθελα να πω να έχουμε ειδική στολή, γιατί μπορεί μετά να τη βγάλει αυτή και να είναι μισόγυμνος ο άνθρωπος και να τρέξει στους χορούς. Όχι. Ο πιστός μπορεί να πάει με τα ρούχα που έχει στην εκκλησία, να είναι σεμνά, και να είναι σεμνά και αυτά που θα φοράει στην εκκλησία και αυτά που θα φοράει την Κυριακή το απόγευμα, να είναι σεμνά. Έτσι, μας λείπει αυτή η λειτουργική αγωγή. Από την ώρα που θα μπούμε μες στον ναό, πώς θα περπατήσουμε; Πώς θα ανάψουμε το κερί μας; Πού θα πάμε να σταθούμε; Πώς θα καθίσουμε; Βέβαια, κάποτε κάτι θα πούμε στον πλαϊνό μας, γιατί έχουμε κάποια ανάγκη να μιλήσουμε, κάτι να πούμε. Σύντομα θα το πούμε αυτό, χωρίς ούτε να ενοχλήσουμε ούτε να δημιουργήσουμε προβλήματα στους περιβάλλοντας. Όλα αυτά δεν νομίζετε ότι πρέπει κάποτε να αρχίσουμε να τα σκεφτόμαστε;
