Summary
Christians should approach catechesis eagerly throughout life, because hearing the Word of God sustains faith rather than merely supplying new information. The baptismal preparation includes exorcisms, the priest’s breathing upon the catechumen, renunciation of Satan while facing west, and union with Christ while facing east. The baptismal exorcisms invoke Christ’s authority to expel demonic influence from the catechumen and the baptismal water as part of purification and salvation.

We seek to obtain only the gold, with nothing foreign found mixed with it. In the same way, without the exorcisms, the soul cannot of itself receive the divine teachings gathered from Holy Scripture. Your face is covered so that your mind may be free to attend, and so that a wandering gaze may not cause your heart to wander as well. Yet though your eyes are covered, nothing prevents your ears from receiving the words of salvation. Those skilled in goldsmithing use fine instruments to blow air into the fire. By blowing upon the gold hidden in the crucible and stirring up the flame beside it, they find what they seek. In the same way, those who perform the exorcisms, through the Holy Spirit, instill fear.
As they kindle the soul within the body, as within a crucible, the enemy demon flees, while salvation remains, together with the hope of eternal life; and the soul, purified from its sins, possesses salvation. Therefore, brothers and sisters, let us abide in hope; let us offer ourselves and place our hope in God, so that the God of all, seeing our willing intention, may cleanse us from our sins, grant us good hope concerning what is to come, and give us the metanoia that leads to salvation. God has called, and you have been called.
We shall draw three points from this paragraph. One very important point is this: “Let your feet hasten to the catechetical teachings.” Let your feet hasten to the catechetical teachings held here. Later, of course, Saint Cyril will again say that catechumens must hasten to catechesis. But even here we can make this observation: a person must have eagerness and readiness in order to receive the Word of God. Here, this refers to catechesis. But more generally, what would you say?
For us, Baptism has already taken place. Yet is not every word of God, every sermon, every study circle, and every talk, whatever form it may take, a kind of catechesis? It does not merely give us information about our faith; it also supports and establishes us in it and adds to our knowledge. So this eagerness must be present. I have been deeply impressed by your eagerness. So often, while we are waiting for everyone to gather here, I stand for a little while outside in the church courtyard and watch how you arrive—quickly, quickly, hurrying!
You put your work aside and come quickly, quickly. If only you knew how my heart rejoices when I see the way you come! Mr. Iatridis, for example, came running when he entered just now. I happened to catch sight of him as he opened the door. Well, I mentioned his name; never mind. My point is that you come running. How greatly I rejoice!
Tired from the whole day, from your cares, your work, and all your affairs, you come here. Those who also attend the first hour, when we discuss questions, remain here for two hours or even longer. You see, then, how important it is for our feet to hasten to catechesis. But I shall also mention something sorrowful. Yesterday, as I was going to Saint Charalambos, I saw such a vast crowd of young people returning from the football match—thousands of them—that, my dear ones, I could not cross the bridge.
I waited at the corner of the bridge for that tremendous crowd to subside a little. They were all, of course, moving in one direction, while I had to go against them, because I was heading toward Saint Charalambos and they were coming from the Alcazar stadium into the city. I could not cross the bridge. And I said to myself, “Do all these thousands of people, especially all these young people, live here in Larissa? Does Larissa have so many young people?”
Does Larissa really have so many young people? Is this how many there are? And so, although I praise you and we say, “The church is full,” what exactly is full? This room is full, or Saint Charalambos may be full, if you prefer. Yet, my dear ones, thousands of other people remain outside, and those who listen to the Word of God are ultimately only a very small and insignificant percentage compared with the multitude. Indeed, it has been found that only about two percent attend church regularly. Where is the other ninety-eight percent? This is a sorrowful aspect of the matter. But I do not know what can be done. I do not know.
At least you who listen to the Word of God, you who are present here and always show this eagerness, I beg you to preserve it always. There is a danger here that I must point out in general. After you have been coming for one year, two years, or three years, you may begin to feel that you are hearing the same things. Yet the Word of God has this remarkable quality: as you may have noticed, the whole of Holy Scripture contains many stories, episodes, and events, and expresses the same truth in many different ways. Moreover, Holy Scripture never exhausts a subject as someone might do when writing a treatise
on one particular subject. Holy Scripture never exhausts a subject—never. Instead, in one passage it presents one aspect of the matter. Somewhere else, in another book of Holy Scripture or in another event, it presents a different aspect of the same subject. Thus, a speaker who follows the method of interpreting Holy Scripture used by the ancient Fathers of our Church always has something new to offer, and his listeners cannot say, “We already know all this.” Nevertheless, a person who has listened to the Word of God for many years
may still, as I say, be tempted by a sense of being full and satisfied and may say, “I know these subjects already. Why, then, should I hasten to catechesis? There is no need. By now I know it all.” My dear ones, our souls must remain unsated, always hungry to hear the Word of God. Even if we know these things, it does not matter. Knowledge is not merely information; it also sustains us. If we regard knowledge not only as information but also—and above all—as spiritual nourishment that sustains us, then we shall never say that our souls have had enough and that we no longer wish to hear the Word of God. Those who succumb to the temptation of feeling satisfied should know this; I tell them plainly:
When they used to run to hear the Word of God, they were not going in order to be edified, but out of curiosity. Yes, yes, yes. You know that, whether consciously or unconsciously, people often listen to the Word of God out of curiosity. By curiosity I do not mean a blameworthy curiosity. I simply mean the desire to learn still more things. But we already possess sufficient knowledge—that is what I mean. You know that few people regard preaching and the Word of God as something more than knowledge, as something that also sustains the soul. The great Ampère, the well-known physicist, once used to attend the catechetical school lesson in his neighborhood.
The catechist was a young university student whose professor was Ampère. He said to him, “Professor, do you really come here to listen to me?” “No, my child,” Ampère replied. “I received my catechesis when I was young, but I come because I have much to gain and to be edified by. It reminds me of what I once learned; it reminds me how I ought to live.” You see? It sustained him. “And if you wish to know, I greatly enjoy—very greatly—hearing you teach the lesson as well,” the professor told his student. If every soul approaches the Word of God in this way, it will not be exposed to this danger—a danger I would even call deadly:
becoming sated with the Word of God and giving up listening to it. Thus we would say that throughout our whole life our feet must hasten to catechesis, as Saint Cyril says. That is the first point. A second point will help explain—or rather, give us knowledge of—the Mystery of Baptism. It will also help us understand certain things, even after the event, or things we must know if we undertake to become godparents. It is a tragedy for me to become a godparent without even knowing the Creed. What kind of godparent are you becoming then, my brother or sister? For at that moment you are undertaking
the catechesis of the person being baptized. You promise that, although the child is being baptized as an infant, in due time you will assume responsibility for the child’s catechesis and care. Yet you do not even know the Creed. How, then, can you do this? Is that not presumptuous? So that we may not reach such a point, let us hear what Saint Cyril tells us here: “Receive the exorcisms with diligence. Whether you are breathed upon or exorcised, the act brings you salvation.” What are these exorcisms, also called adjurations? He says that you must receive these exorcisms or adjurations
with diligence, care, and joy. Pay close attention to this point. Whether you are breathed upon or receive the exorcism, what matters is that you are receiving salvation. You are receiving something that brings salvation. What does this mean? As you know, the service of Baptism, the Mystery of Baptism, has two sections. The first section is what we call the making of a catechumen. This name comes from the ancient praxis, the active life of the Church. The second section is the Mystery of Baptism itself, which begins with the words, “Blessed is the Kingdom,” because
the Mystery of Baptism was joined to the Divine Liturgy. Likewise, the Mystery of Holy Matrimony was joined to the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, the Divine Liturgy. These two Mysteries, Holy Matrimony and Baptism, begin with “Blessed is the Kingdom.” Moreover, we place the Gospel book and the Cross upon a small table that stands in place of the Holy Altar. The table brought out for a wedding or a Baptism is, if you will, a remnant and a substitute for the Holy Altar.
In doing this, we are simply recalling the Divine Liturgy, within which these two Mysteries once had their place. In earlier times, the Mysteries of our Church were celebrated within the Divine Liturgy. The Mystery that still remains within the Divine Liturgy is ordination. Ordination cannot be conceived apart from the Mystery of the Divine Liturgy—that is, the Holy Eucharist. Thus, the central rite of Baptism was connected with the Divine Liturgy. Before the Baptism, however, we have what is called the making of a catechumen. If we open an Euchologion, or Book of Needs, we read: “The order performed before Holy Baptism: Prayer for the making of a catechumen.” This is a short service, and it contains the following elements. It begins with a prayer.
It begins, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” not “Blessed is the Kingdom.” The prayer concerns the catechumen and asks God to help him proceed to Baptism. Then follow three prayers called adjurations, as I read to you here; Saint Cyril calls them exorcisms. Whether we call them exorcisms or adjurations, they are the same thing: the first, second, and third adjurations. Another prayer follows, asking God to receive the catechumen, after the priest has breathed upon him three times in the form of the Cross. Saint Cyril says here: “Whether you are breathed upon or exorcised, the act brings you salvation.” I shall point this out to you many times as we continue our study of these catechetical teachings. Again and again, my dear ones, we shall see what the patristics scholar who wrote this introduction to Saint Cyril also observes: the ancient praxis of the Church preserved here dates from the middle of the fourth century, around the year 350. When we compare it with the praxis of our Church in the twentieth century, we see that we truly possess the Orthodox faith.
We truly preserve the apostolic teaching and the Tradition of the Church. It is something astonishing—truly astonishing. Despite all the sufferings, dangers, and trials our people have endured, Orthodoxy has maintained its true course throughout history. This is wonderful. I have told you many times that I shall continue to emphasize this, because it needs to be made clear. Orthodoxy is accused of having departed from the ancient tradition. And who accuses us? The Protestants. The Protestants accuse us, claiming that they themselves are returning to the sources, back to the ancient tradition.
We must be ready at all times to silence them, especially with a work as early as the Catecheses of Saint Cyril. After this prayer, the following action takes place: the catechumen is turned and positioned facing west, toward the setting sun, and the priest asks him: “Do you renounce Satan, and all his works, and all his worship, and all his angels, and all his pomp?” I should also mention the Mystagogical Catecheses of Saint Cyril.
They are nothing other than catechesis after Baptism and initiation into the Mysteries. They explain what I have just read to you: what the worship of Satan is, what the works of Satan are, and what the pomp of Satan is. We will not discuss these things at this moment. Then the catechumen says, “I renounce him.” What does “I renounce him” mean?
The prefix apo means that I break away. I am no longer under Satan’s command or dominion. Tassomai means “I take my place in the ranks”; but apotassomai means “I renounce and depart.” I am no longer in Satan’s ranks. He says this to him three times: “Do you renounce Satan?” “I have renounced him.”
I take my place, having renounced Satan. “And breathe upon him and spit upon him.” Breathe—breathe upon him—and spit at him. Spit. Please pay particular attention to the words “breathe upon him.” They have very profound liturgical significance. Perhaps we shall say something about that. Then the priest turns him toward the East. There, in his Mystagogical Catechesis, Saint Cyril explains the meaning of both “west” and “east.” I will explain it to you very briefly. Symbolically, the West is the realm of Satan. Pay attention: I mean this strictly in a symbolic sense, because every place belongs to God, since…
“The earth and all that is in it”—everything belongs to God. “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.” Every place is under God’s dominion; God is everywhere. But symbolically, the west represents Satan, while the east represents Christ. Therefore, all these acts are performed facing west as a renunciation of Satan. Then, turning toward the east signifies union with Christ. At this point the priest asks the catechumen, “Do you unite yourself to Christ?” The baby we are holding in our arms does not answer, because we practice infant Baptism. The godparent answers. Oh, my beloved, if only you knew what responsibility the godparent bears—you who rush about with...
You rush so readily to become godparents to children, and sometimes you even say that you are doing a charitable deed for the sake of someone’s soul. This was considered a good deed because, in earlier times, Baptism cost money. Poor children whose parents could not afford to have them baptized would therefore be sponsored by others, and this was regarded as a charitable deed for the soul. In the old days, this was sometimes even assigned as a canon of penance in confession: “My lady, you have had an abortion; now pay for three children to be baptized.” In those days, such things were taken seriously. By “baptize,” they meant paying for the Baptism of three children, because Baptism was assumed to involve expenses. But Baptism was the work of the Church and was never a matter of money. Yet, as you see, we have tied Baptism to banquets, godparents, gifts, and gold jewelry,
“We told you this,” you say, “but of course all these things cost money.” Yet if you take your little child—even if you have no money—and find someone who is upright, a true Christian, to serve as the godparent, you can go to the Church with five or ten people, baptize your child, and then go home. Nothing else is needed. That is the end of it. Instead, we wait for the godfather to come from Germany, leaving the child unbaptized all that time and not giving the child Holy Communion, because without Baptism the child cannot receive Holy Communion. And all this—for what? And why? My dear friends, I return to the point: the godparent, the sponsor, bears a very great responsibility. The godparent must do a great deal to help the person being baptized. In the case of a child, the godparent stands before God on behalf of the one being baptized. The godparent is a person of great importance; that is why the Church forbids marriage between them.
There is an impediment to marriage between a godfather and his goddaughter, and likewise between a godmother and her godson. In other words, I cannot marry my godfather or my godmother. It is simply not possible. The Church safeguards this matter. This is a very close spiritual relationship, and marriage is not permitted. Civil marriage, of course, will sweep all this aside, since it belongs to a different tradition. So the responsibility is very great. Let me tell you something else about this. Godchildren of the same godparent are also related to one another. I am making a brief digression here, but never mind. Godchildren of the same godparent share a spiritual kinship. That is why, if you become the godparent of a boy and a girl, those children cannot marry each other. Do you know why?
The one who baptized them—the godparent—is supposed, as the children grow, to bring them into his home and catechize them. So if these children go to their godfather’s home for catechesis, they must not begin courting one another there. To safeguard this catechesis when boys and girls have the same godparent, the Church imposes an impediment: two children baptized by the same godparent may not marry each other. I believe you know this. Today, of course, this has fallen by the wayside. But everything is falling by the wayside—and we are going the same way, as you can see. Yet take heed: the Church does this to protect them.
Two brothers or sisters by birth—two siblings in the flesh, related by blood—are protected. They cannot marry one another while living under the same roof. They are protected by the law of God, as well as by civil law. Just imagine two siblings beginning a romantic relationship in their own home. Could anything remain intact? Certainly not. This relationship is therefore protected. In the same way, spiritual brothers and sisters who have the same godparent are also protected. So be very careful: baptize either boys or girls, one or the other. And do not be so quick to become a godparent, because this is not merely a matter of sentiment.
You would have to spend your own money on some child. It sounds absurd to say such a thing today. If you do not know whether the family whose child you are going to baptize is spiritually minded—for if you are spiritually minded and want to catechize the child you baptized, to say a few good words to the child, yet the parents will not allow you to do so—then where are we heading? What are we doing? For this reason, be very careful. You must know that, when you baptize a child, the child’s parents will allow you to provide their child with catechesis. And so, “Do you unite yourself to Christ?” I now return to the subject after this digression. “Do you unite yourself to Christ?” the priest asks the catechumen, who has now turned toward the east. “I unite myself to Him.” This is said three times. “Have you united yourself to Christ?”
“I have joined myself to Him”—that is, I have united myself with Him; I am with Him. This is what “I join myself to Him” means, because many people may not know these words or what they mean. “And do you believe in Him?” “I believe in Him as King and God.” Yes, I believe. I join myself to Christ, and I believe. Then recite the Symbol of Faith. And now the godparent says: “I believe in one God, the Father Almighty.” Take note that this Creed is always recited. This Creed—the one familiar to us today, the Nicene Creed—or, as we shall see, the Jerusalem Creed, which is almost the same as the Nicene Creed, is found in the catechetical lectures. We shall come to it one day, God willing. You will see that there were many creeds, very simple and brief—or rather, not simple, but brief.
Articles were added to these creeds as heresies arose. Let me give you an ancient creed found in Holy Scripture itself. My dear friends, when Philip the Deacon was sent by the Holy Spirit to baptize that Ethiopian, the man first received catechesis, of course. There we find all the elements, you know, of complete catechesis and Baptism. He received the catechesis. We are told that Philip heard him reading from Holy Scripture that well-known Christological prophecy. Then the Ethiopian said to Philip, who by then had entered the chariot:
“Who is the prophet speaking about here—himself or someone else?” “Not himself,” Philip tells him, “but the Messiah, Christ. And that is Jesus.” As Philip catechizes him and they continue on their way, he speaks to him about Baptism, explaining that through Baptism we receive the forgiveness of sins, and so forth. They see a spring, and the Ethiopian says, “Look, here is water. What prevents me from being baptized?” “Nothing prevents you,” the deacon tells him, “if you believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Nothing prevents you.” “I believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” What is this, then? It is a creed, a profession of faith. Do you see how brief it is?”
Here, we see the very heart, we might say, of the process of Baptism: “I believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” Nothing prevents you. They came down from the chariot, and Philip baptized the Ethiopian. What do we see? As heresies spread, this Creed was expanded. When Arius appeared and denied the divinity of Christ, and so forth, the Church naturally added: “Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,” because Arius had said that Christ was a created being: “begotten, not made, consubstantial—of one essence—with the Father.”
“Through whom all things were made,” and so forth. The Creed developed in this way because heresies had arisen. The person being baptized had to confess the Orthodox faith clearly, since the catechumen might have known about these heresies or even been influenced by them. He therefore had to confess plainly what our Church teaches about Jesus Christ, and so forth. Thus, before Baptism, the exorcisms were performed. I would like to dwell briefly on these exorcisms, because they are very important, as is the priest’s breathing upon the catechumen. By way of example, I would like to read you...
Let me read you something from the exorcisms—indeed, if you wish, from the first exorcism. Listen: “The Lord rebukes you, O devil—He who came into the world and dwelt among men, that He might overthrow your tyranny and deliver mankind.” He rebukes you. The words, “The Lord rebuke you, O devil,” come from the Epistle of Jude. This is what the Archangel Michael said to the devil, as Jude, the brother of the Lord, notes in his epistle. The Lord rebukes you, O devil—the Lord who came into the world and came to dwell among us,
“To overthrow your tyranny”—to cast out your tyranny—“and deliver mankind,” to save mankind. And further on it says: “Flee, for He Himself commands you through us.” The Lord who came to dwell among us commands you through us—through us priests, through Holy Orders. “Be afraid, depart, and withdraw from this creature.” Be afraid; leave; get away from this creature. “And do not return, nor hide yourself within him”—do not hide yourself inside him. You know, these verbs are deeply significant, the words “hide yourself” and so forth. “Neither encounter him nor act upon him.”
along the road of his life, meeting him and doing him harm, “whether by night or by day, at any hour or at midday.” Each of these words has its own significance—midday, for example, carries particular meanings. “But depart into your own Tartarus until the great, appointed Day of Judgment.” And so on, and so forth. What, then, are these exorcisms? They are solemn prayers for the expulsion of the devil. This is why Saint Cyril says here that whether one is breathed upon or exorcised, the act is salvific. For you, it is salvation. Perhaps you will ask why these exorcisms are necessary.
There is also another, separate act of exorcism over the baptismal water. While the three exorcisms are directed toward the person of the catechumen, the one who is to be baptized, this other exorcism is directed toward the water itself in the baptismal font. From there too, from the water of the font, we cast out the devil. This goes back to ancient times. When man surrendered himself to the devil through the Fall, the devil concealed himself within the whole creation and came to exercise dominion over it—over man, over the whole creation, and over all its elements.
In the animals, in the plants, and in inanimate matter. By divine permission, the whole creation was under demonic dominion. God always remained, and still remains, the Lord of heaven and earth. But because man, by his own free will, surrendered himself to Satan, and because creation was made for man, creation too, together with man, was surrendered to Satan’s dominion. Take care: this does not mean that God ceased to govern the world; it happened by divine permission. The culmination of this condition is idolatry, when man begins, through idolatry, to worship the devil himself. When Christ came, He conquered the devil.
Now, of course, the devil has been defeated, and his defeat is already assured. Yet he is still active, and he will be utterly crushed at Christ’s Second Coming. I repeat: his defeat is already assured, but in practice evil is still at work in the world. The devil has been allowed to work evil in the world. I do not want to go any further into why and how, since you already know this from our other talks. I will say only this: the devil—listen carefully to the verb—lurks within creation. Listen to that verb, “lurks”: he makes his nest within it; he dwells there as in a nest.
He makes his nest within creation, within man, within living beings, and within the water. But when Christ comes into the world, creation will be restored—that is, it will be made new. No concession will then be made to Satan any longer, and he will be cast into eternal Hell. This is what the demons in the country of the Gergesenes said: “Have You come to torment us before our time?” They know that they will be tormented and cast into Hell. For now, my beloved, the Church creates islands of salvation for us, since creation remains under Satan’s dominion, in the sense I explained to you. Not potentially, because potentially he has already been defeated. In actuality, however, the devil—take note—
The Church creates islands of salvation. What are these islands of salvation? Since the whole creation is under demonic dominion, when the Church wishes to dedicate a place to the love and worship of God, she sets that place apart. Yet to set it apart, she must first drive the devil out of it. Suppose she wishes to build the church in which we are now gathered. She consecrates it. What does it mean to consecrate a church? Holy relics are brought, and with hymns and prayers and so forth, three processions are made around the church. Do you know what this means? It means that boundaries are being marked out, within which the devil must not enter. We drive the devil out of that place. What place? The physical place itself. We put the devil to flight. This is the meaning of the consecration of a church. Would you like to see this also in Holy Matrimony? Consider the so-called Dance of Isaiah. It is called the Dance of Isaiah because we sing, “O Isaiah, dance for joy,” and, “The Virgin has conceived in her womb,” and so forth. This refers to the Mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God: what you prophesied has been fulfilled. The Son of God has come. Rejoice and dance, therefore. Together with the newlyweds, we made three circuits around the little table that serves in place of the Holy Table. Do you know what this means?
We mark out a sacred space and drive the devil from it. This is the space of the family, the space of the married couple, because the devil lurks everywhere, and we drive him out. So we drive him out of small places, small enclaves—little islands, as I told you earlier. The devil also lurks within a person who is to receive the grace of God. This is the old man, the old self. And here is your question: What if that person was born to parents who had been baptized? Baptism is entirely personal and carries no hereditary rights, if I may put it that way. So that person remains a dwelling place of demons, whether or not they have troubled him.
This person, then, must be purified. The demons inhabiting the realm of his existence must be driven out. For this purpose, we have these three exorcisms: to expel the devil who lurks within him, so that he may receive the grace of God. We therefore have two actions. First, the human person—the realm of his existence—must be cleansed of the devil. Second, once this realm, this person, has been purified, he must receive the grace of God. This is the meaning of the exorcism. As for the priest’s breathing upon him,
As for this breathing, one could write an entire treatise on the subject. Indeed, as you know, Saint Cyril gives an example. This whole passage that I read to you is an example involving gold. He says that gold is placed in the furnace to remove all the foreign substances within it—lead, tin, iron, and copper. And as you may have noticed, goldsmiths use bellows with the furnace and blow upon the fire to make it stronger and burn more intensely, so that the gold may be purified. In the same way, he says, you should understand the breathing here to mean: “We have come to purify you, O man,”
from the demons lurking within. Now, do you remember how God made man? He created him and “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.” This breathing that Christ performed—pardon me, that God performed then, in the Old Testament—signified the creation of man. What does this breathing mean? God did not take some part of Himself and place it in man. We must correct this misconception as well. Some people think that we are a part of God. This idea is still expressed today, though it was heard much more often in the past, especially in speeches given at schools: that we are, they say, a part of God. We are not a part of God in any sense. When God breathed into man, He did not give him a part of His Spirit.
That is blasphemous. If I, a human being who sins, had received a piece of the Godhead, would that mean the Godhead itself sins? Or how could I, a created human being, possess a piece of the uncreated God? It is blasphemous. God’s breathing upon man is an act that reveals the unique manner in which man was created. Christ, it says, breathed upon His disciples and told them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Do you know what this means? The One who breathed into Adam’s nostrils is the same One who now breathes upon His disciples. Who is He? He is God the Word (Logos), the God-Man. This reveals His identity. Why does He breathe upon them, and what does He say? “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Did He give them the Holy Spirit through that breath?
No, the Holy Spirit was not given through the breathing. What, then, does this mean? It means that the breathing is the second act of re-creation. For when I created you, O man, I breathed into your nostrils and gave you the breath of life. Now, because you have sinned, I breathe once more into your nostrils, upon your face, so that you may receive the Holy Spirit—that is, so that you may be born anew, regenerated. Thus, here the breathing is the breathing of regeneration. We received the first in Adam, in the person of Adam. We now receive the second breathing in our Baptism. This act, then, is the—
the symbol of man’s re-creation. It truly is something magnificent. But I will not dwell on it any longer. Here he says only: “The enemy, the demon, departs, while salvation remains, and the hope of eternal life remains,” and so on. Therefore, my dear ones, you see that we have learned that...
Consider the form of this short service for the catechumen before Baptism as it is practiced today, and see how closely it resembles the ancient practice. Now, to conclude this section, there is one further point. It is mentioned only in passing, but to me it is very important, and I will explain it as clearly as I can. Speaking of the exorcisms, he does not want to give the impression that what the Church does is a human invention, something devised by men. Rather, he rightly wishes to give it the authority that comes from divine inspiration. He writes: “Thus, without the exorcisms, the soul cannot be purified.” Without the exorcisms, then, the soul cannot be cleansed. Do you see? Sometimes we say, “My child, do not lie, do not steal, do not blaspheme, so that you may cleanse your soul.” Is that enough? No. Here we are dealing with the prayers of the Church.
It is a matter of prayers. That is why some people think that salvation comes simply by becoming a good person, without these rites of the Church. That is wrong. He continues: “And they are divine.” These exorcisms are divine. They are not a human invention. “Gathered from the divine Scriptures.”
“Collected”—that is, gathered together. They were compiled from the divine Scriptures, that is, from Holy Scripture. Indeed, my dear friends, today the following kind of work is undertaken for strictly scholarly reasons—strictly, strictly scholarly reasons. Of course, this is not done only in theology.
The same is done in other fields as well—for example, in the study of classical literature—for purely scholarly reasons.
The Euchologion. The late Trembelas carried out just such a study of the Euchologion—the little book you see here, which contains these prayers. In our churches it is called the Small Euchologion, because we also have the Great Euchologion, which contains the rite of ordination, the consecration of churches, and many other things. This one, however, contains only the services of Baptism, Holy Matrimony, and burial. It contains only a few services, and so it is called the Small Euchologion. He based his work on codices—that is, on ancient manuscripts—and produced a critical edition. Then, in the margins beside the text, wherever he finds something that refers to Holy Scripture,
the reference to Holy Scripture. If we were truly to examine all the prayers in the Euchologion—not only those for Baptism, but those for the other Mysteries as well—with great patient endurance, we could trace every single word, and above all every meaning, back to Holy Scripture. The same is true of the Divine Liturgy, even where it speaks of the Second Coming. What would we discover? That all of this, in its words and especially in its meaning and spirit, comes from Holy Scripture. It is nothing other than a collection of divinely inspired passages from Scripture. This is what he means when he says, “We did not make these things up ourselves; they are taken from…”
“from the divine Scriptures.” The Protestants, especially, accuse us of having many prayers that are our own inventions. And when we tell them, “But these prayers are from the Saints,” they reply, “And what are the Saints?” You know, the Protestants are hostile to the Saints. Indeed, what are they not opposed to? Whom are they not against? In any case, they are Christians in name only. Be that as it may; perhaps I should not say such things. And to think that we even have Protestant centers here in Larissa, leading some of our Orthodox Christians astray. This happens precisely, my dear ones, because they do not know the things we are discussing here. And if you tell me, “It is your fault, Fathers, because you do not teach us these things,” I will say, “You are right.” So, if we were to show them, by this critical method and through careful study...
If we showed them, through careful and critical study, that all the prayers of our Church are woven together from Holy Scripture, then we would truly silence their objections. That is the great issue. And I wanted to tell you this, as I have done, so that you may know that what we call prayers also comes from Holy Scripture. There is nothing in them that lies outside Holy Scripture—that is, outside the realm of divine inspiration. And this is extremely important. I shall move on to the next paragraph. Just one point, since the hour has grown late. In the tenth paragraph, Saint Cyril says: “Remain faithful in attending the catecheses, even if we speak at length about many things.”
“Do not let your mind grow weary. For you are receiving weapons against the power of the adversary—weapons against heresies, against Jews, Samaritans, and Gentiles. You have many enemies, so take many arrows. For you must shoot against many, and you need to learn how to strike down the pagan Greek, and how to contend with a heretic, a Jew, or a Samaritan.” This is a fine passage. “Remain faithful to the catechetical teachings.” Take care not to leave. A little further on, in a later paragraph, he will tell us something else—and there is no harm in mentioning it today. All these things form a chain. Here we could fittingly apply the expression:
A chain, a continuous sequence, one thing following another. So, if we attend once and then miss once—or attend once and miss twice—tell me, what will we learn? Can we gain a coherent body of knowledge in such a fragmented way? Impossible. In other words, we must not be absent. That is the whole point. And here he says, “Remain faithful to the catecheses”; stay for the catecheses and listen to them. Even though we say many things and speak at length: “Though we prolong our discourse with many words.” You see? This is a weakness of those who teach. We speak, we prolong our discourse, and go on and on. But take care that your understanding does not grow weary or faint, because you are receiving weapons.
As for our saying many things and speaking at length, my beloved, do you know what empty talk is? It is when someone says nothing, but merely piles up words—verbalism. But when someone has much of substance to say and can speak for hours, that is not empty talk. Paul also spoke throughout the night at Troas, and wherever he went, he spoke for many hours. The Word of God, then, is not empty talk. It becomes so only, I repeat, when it is mere verbalism—words, words, words. What do those words contain? Nothing at all, just hot air. What did they tell you? Who knows what they told us? Hot air, grandiose declarations, soap bubbles, fireworks. That is empty talk. But when it is bread, when it is a loaf, when it is wheat, can that be called empty talk? If someone sometimes grows tired, that is only natural. Do we not grow tired at school? Of course we do.
“Do not grow weary,” says Saint Cyril, if you are tempted to say that you are tired because we speak at length, for through these words you are receiving weapons. What are these weapons? You must fight against heresies, against the Jews, the Samaritans, and the Gentiles. You have many enemies, and therefore you must receive many arrows. What are the arrows? They are knowledge—the things you hear here. Take them; gather up arrows. There are many at whom you must aim and cast your spear, and you need to learn how to strike the Greek—that is, the pagan. As you know, “Greek” here does not refer to ethnicity, but to religious belief; it means the idolaters. You must also learn how to contend against the heretic, the Jew, and the Samaritan. Each of them will raise some question
about the faith. How will you answer him? You must therefore have weapons. Saint Isidore of Pelusium says to a priest—or rather, to a candidate for the priesthood: “You must know many things, because if a heretic confronts you and you do not know how to respond, then those who hear the heretic will say that the faith itself is at fault, that it is weak and feeble. In the end, they will listen to the heretic. The fault will not lie with the faith, but with you, because you are not properly equipped.” This is what Saint Isidore of Pelusium tells the candidate for the priesthood. So we would say the same here, my beloved: when heretics say something to us and we do not know how to answer, we ourselves may begin to believe that our faith has weaknesses.
The faith has no weaknesses; we ourselves are weak. For this reason, we must take every care to fill our quiver with the arrows of knowledge against those who ask us to give “a reason for the hope that is in us,” as the Apostle Peter says: “Always ready to give a defense.” Always ready to give a defense.

Τρία σημεία θα πάρουμε από την παράγραφο αυτή. Ένα πολύ σημαντικό σημείο είναι το εξής: «Η δε πούς σου εις τας κατηχήσεις σπευδέτωσαν». Τα πόδια σου στις κατηχήσεις που γίνονται εδώ να σπεύδουν. Βέβαια και παρακάτω θα αναφέρει το θέμα τούτο, ότι πρέπει να σπεύδουν οι κατηχούμενοι στις κατηχήσεις, αλλά και εδώ μπορούμε να κάνουμε το εξής σχόλιο: Είναι η προθυμία που πρέπει να έχει ο άνθρωπος προκειμένου να δεχθεί τον Λόγο του Θεού. Εδώ, η κατήχηση. Αλλά γενικά, τι θα λέγατε;
Στη γωνία της γεφύρας περίμενα να κοπάσει λίγο εκείνο το φοβερό πλήθος των ανθρώπων, που είχαν βέβαια όλοι μία κατεύθυνση, και έπρεπε και εγώ να στραφώ εναντίον αυτής της κατευθύνσεως, γιατί εγώ πήγαινα προς τον Άγιο Χαράλαμπο, εκείνοι ήρχοντο από το Αλκαζάρ προς την πόλη. Δεν μπορούσα να περάσω από τη γέφυρα. Και είπα: Όλες αυτές οι χιλιάδες των νέων, ιδίως νέων ανθρώπων, κατοικούν εδώ εις την Λάρισα; Έχει τόσους νέους η Λάρισα;
τίποτε άλλο παρά κατήχηση μετά το βάπτισμα και είναι μύηση στα μυστήρια, γίνεται ανάλυση αυτών που σας διάβασα τώρα. Ποια είναι η λατρεία του σατανά, ποια είναι τα έργα του σατανά και ποια είναι η πομπή του σατανά. Δεν θα τα πούμε τώρα αυτή τη στιγμή. Και λέγει ο κατηχούμενος: «Αποτάσσομαι». Τι θα πει «αποτάσσομαι»;
Κώλυμα μεταξύ αναδόχου και αναδεκτής ή της αναδόχου και του αναδεκτού, αντιστρόφως. Δεν μπορεί να παντρευτεί, δηλαδή, ο νονός μου ή η νονά μου, δεν μπορώ να παντρευτώ τη νονά μου. Δεν μπορεί, δεν γίνεται. Η Εκκλησία το προστατεύει το θέμα αυτό. Είναι πνευματική συγγένεια μεγάλου βαθμού και δεν επιτρέπεται να γίνει γάμος. Τώρα ο πολιτικός γάμος θα καταργεί όλα αυτά, βέβαια, άλλη παράδοση. Οπότε η ευθύνη πολύ μεγάλη. Ακούστε με κάτι να σας πω πάνω σε αυτό. Και οι αναδεκτοί μεταξύ των έχουν συγγένεια. Κάνω εδώ τώρα μια παρέκβαση, δεν πειράζει. Έχουν συγγένεια οι αναδεκτοί μεταξύ των. Γι' αυτό, αν βαφτίσετε εσείς ένα πρόσωπο, ένα αγόρι και ένα κορίτσι, τα παιδιά αυτά δεν μπορούν να παντρευτούν μεταξύ τους. Ξέρετε γιατί;
«Για ποιον ομιλεί εδώ ο προφήτης, για τον εαυτόν του ή για κάποιον άλλον;» «Όχι», του λέγει, «διά τον Μεσσίαν, διά τον Χριστόν. Και είναι ο Ιησούς», του λέγει ο Φίλιππος. Ενώ τον κατηχεί και προχωρούν, του ομιλεί για το βάπτισμα, ότι με το βάπτισμα έχουμε άφεση αμαρτιών κ.λπ. Βλέπουν μια πηγή και λέγει ο Αιθίοψ: «Να νερό. Τι με εμποδίζει να βαπτιστώ;» «Τίποτα δεν σε εμποδίζει», του λέγει ο διάκονος, «εάν πιστεύεις τον Ιησούν ότι είναι Υιός του Θεού, τίποτα δεν σε εμποδίζει». «Πιστεύω τον Ιησούν ότι είναι τον Υιόν του Θεού». Αυτό τώρα τι είναι; Είναι σύμβολο πίστεως. Βλέπετε πόσο μικρό;
νησίδες σωτηρίας η Εκκλησία. Τι είναι αυτές οι νησίδες σωτηρίας; Όταν θέλει, επειδή η ολόκληρη κτίσις είναι δαιμονοκρατουμένη, έναν χώρο να τον αφιερώσει στην αγάπη του Θεού, στη λατρεία του Θεού, αφιερώνει τον χώρον αυτόν. Δεν τον αφιερώνει, τον ξεχωρίζει, αλλά και να τον ξεχωρίσει πρέπει να διώξει τον διάβολο από τον χώρον αυτόν. Θέλει να κτίσει αυτόν τον ναό που είμαστε εδώ. Τον εγκαινιάζει. Τι θα πει τον εγκαινιάζει; Παίρνει άγια λείψανα και με ύμνους και με ευχές κ.λπ., κ.λπ., κάνουν τρεις γύρους γύρω από την εκκλησία. Ξέρετε τι σημαίνει αυτό; Σημαίνει ότι χαράσσονται όρια μέσα στα οποία δεν πρέπει να μπει ο διάβολος. Διώχνουμε τον διάβολο από τον χώρο. Ποιον χώρο; Τον υλικόν χώρον. Φυγαδεύουμε τον διάβολο. Αυτή είναι η έννοια των εγκαινίων ενός ναού. Θέλετε ακόμη να το δείτε αυτό και εις τον γάμον; Εκείνος ο λεγόμενος χορός του Ησαΐα. Και λέγεται χορός του Ησαΐα, διότι «Ησαΐα, χόρευε» και «Η Παρθένος έσχεν εν γαστρί» κ.λπ. Αναφέρεται στο μυστήριο της ενανθρωπήσεως του Υιού του Θεού, ότι εκείνο που εσύ προφήτευσες πραγματοποιήθηκε. Ήρθε ο Υιός του Θεού. Αγάλλου και χόρευε, λοιπόν. Κάναμε τρεις κύκλους γύρω από το υποκατάστατο της Αγίας Τραπέζης, το τραπεζάκι, μαζί με τους νεονύμφους. Ξέρετε τι σημαίνει αυτό;
Είναι βλάσφημο. Εγώ, άνθρωπος που αμαρτάνω, θα πρέπει τότε να αμαρτάνει η θεότητα, αφού πήρα ένα κομμάτι από τη θεότητα; Ή εγώ, άνθρωπος που είμαι κτιστός, πώς θα μπορούσα να έχω και ένα κομμάτι από τον άκτιστον Θεό; Είναι βλάσφημο. Αυτό το ότι εμφυσά είναι μία πράξη που δείχνει έναν ιδιαίτερο τρόπο δημιουργίας του ανθρώπου. Ο Χριστός ενεφύσησε, λέει, στους μαθητάς Του και τους είπε: «Λάβετε Πνεύμα Άγιον». Ξέρετε τι σημαίνει αυτό; Εκείνος που φύσησε στους μυκτήρας, στα ρουθούνια του Αδάμ, είναι ο ίδιος που τώρα εμφυσά στους μαθητάς Του. Ποιος είναι; Ο Θεός Λόγος και ο Θεάνθρωπος. Η ταυτότητά Του. Γιατί εμφυσά και τι λέγει; «Λάβετε Πνεύμα Άγιον», πάρετε Πνεύμα Άγιον. Το Πνεύμα το Άγιον με το φύσημα τους το έδωσε;
