Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that even someone drawn to baptism, confession, or church life by another person may develop a sincere and saving intention. Christ bestows profound dignity on each person, overcoming the contempt found in families, society, and even church communities through His personal and attentive love. Baptism is received only once, while repentance restores those who fall; nevertheless, believers should guard their baptismal purity rather than presume upon future forgiveness.

This is a fundamental element when we receive one of the Mysteries of God. And in the fifth paragraph of the Procathechesis he continues: “Suppose someone comes for some other reason or pretext. A husband, for example, may wish to please his wife and come for that reason; and the same may be said in reverse of women. Often a servant may wish to please his master, or a friend his friend. I accept the bait of the hook and welcome you, though you have come with a wrong intention, in the good hope that you will be saved. You do not know where you are going, nor what kind of net is drawing you in. You have entered the nets of the Church. Let yourself be caught alive; do not flee. For Jesus is hooking you, not to put you to death, but to put you to death and then make you alive. You must die and rise again. For you have heard the Apostle say: ‘Dead to sin, but alive to righteousness.’ Die to your sins and live in righteousness. From this very day, live.” This is a beautiful passage, and you will see that, more or less, we shall all find ourselves in it. He says, “I accept you even though you do not have a good intention, because there are things that may stir your intention and turn it toward the good.”
Now that you have found yourself here, at least see to it afterward that you acquire a good intention. What are the things that may help you? He says that you may come here under some other pretext. Your wife, for example, might ask you to become a catechumen. In our own day we would put it this way: when your wife asks you, my brother, to go to Church, or asks you to go to Holy Confession, what happens then? Or the reverse may happen, he says. Listen to his words: “Suppose a husband,” as is quite possible, “wishing to please his wife”—when his wife has asked him—“comes for that reason.”
“And the same may be said in reverse of women.” Wives too may be urged by their husbands. Then he says that a servant may appeal to his master, or a friend to his friend, saying, “Do me this favor: come to Church. Please, do me this favor and go to Holy Confession.” Today I am no longer speaking about Baptism. In those days the issue was Baptism; today it is the spiritual life that follows. Of course, there is no good intention here at first, but a kind of compulsion, a certain pressure. Yet Saint Cyril says, “I accept this.” Indeed, men sometimes come to Holy Confession here at the brotherhood, and I ask:
“Why did you come? Were you not properly prepared?” He replies, “My wife told me to come. My wife pressured me. I did not really want to come.” If we judged matters with the utmost strictness, we would say, “I will not receive you. You must wait until the desire for Holy Confession arises within you,” and so on. But we do not say that. Saint Cyril says, “I accept this.” I accept it because a beginning has been made, even if under a little pressure—a beginning from which something may come. This person may have a prejudice. A husband sent here by his wife, for example, may be prejudiced. Perhaps once a beginning is made, that prejudice will disappear. What prejudice? That the spiritual father is harsh.
He may even imagine—if you will permit me to say it—that the spiritual father will bite him. Some people really feel that way: that the spiritual father will bite them, that he is cruel and will take up a stick and beat them. My dear friends, there is no such thing. What is it, then? It is plainly a prejudice. So when this person goes to the spiritual father and sees that he is not what he had imagined, his disposition changes. And without question, a good beginning has been made. Of course, I do not mean that there are no people who were urged to begin but, unfortunately, never went beyond that initial urging. They did not push themselves any farther. Others pushed them, but that cannot continue forever. They themselves did nothing further to help themselves, and for them this is certainly a
misfortune. But we are also speaking of those who need the first push, whether they realize it or not, and someone is found to give them that little push. They resemble the paralytic whom four friends picked up and carried to Christ, opening the roof and lowering him through it. What did Christ say? Whenever He healed someone, He would ask whether that person had faith. Here, however, He does not turn to the paralytic. He turns to the four friends who brought him and says that these men had faith. He praises the faith of the four, not that of the paralytic.
Which means that...
Thank you.
This person may not yet have anything good within him. Never mind. He will make a beginning; he will take the first step, and, as I have explained, that is very important. At this point Saint Cyril says beautifully: “You do not know where you are going, nor what kind of net is drawing you in.” You may not know where you are going or even what net is catching you. “You have already entered the nets of the Church. Let yourself be caught alive.”
Let yourself be caught. “Do not flee.” How beautiful! They are very short phrases, only a word or so, with verbs and marked pauses that show how vivid Saint Cyril’s speech is. Let yourself be caught. “Let yourself be caught alive. Do not flee. For Jesus is hooking you.” Jesus is hooking you. Ah, those words, “Jesus is hooking you”! You know that the Lord spoke about nets and fishing. He told the parable of the dragnet cast into the sea of this world—the net of the preaching of the Gospel. And then...
the net is drawn in, so that we may see what kind of fish have been caught. “To what shall I liken,” says the Lord, “the Kingdom of Heaven?” To what shall I compare the Kingdom of Heaven? To a dragnet. You see, the Greek verb for “to catch in a net” has acquired another meaning today. Literally it means to fish, because a dragnet is a fishing net.
It later acquired its metaphorical sense. The verb literally means “to fish.” At this very moment, as you sit here, what do you think is happening? This net of the Church is being cast. Some people here have come today for the first time, perhaps others for the tenth. Yet in many respects, what are we doing at this moment but casting the net of the Church? It is the net of the Gospel, cast in order to catch people. But who is doing the fishing? The Lord spoke to the Apostle Peter and the other disciples, and especially to the Apostle Peter, whose boat He had used. The Lord had asked to use it so that He might speak from the boat to the crowds on the shore. When the Apostle Peter told Him that he was a sinful man and asked the Lord to leave his boat, fearing that God might punish him for his sins, the Lord said to him, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men alive.” From this point onward, you will fish for people. You will not change your occupation; only the object of your occupation
will be different. They will not be irrational fish, but rational ones—human beings themselves. In truth, then, we are not the ones who cast the net. Nor does the Apostle Peter cast it. Christ casts the net. Certainly, He told Peter, “From now on you will become a fisher of men.” But the hook belongs to Christ, my dear friends—to Christ. How beautiful is that brief phrase, “For Jesus is hooking you”! Jesus is hooking you. This hook of Jesus, my dear friends, this hook of Christ, is the heart being seized by the Word of God. The heart is transformed; it changes and undergoes within itself
marvelous things. This is nothing other than the divine transformation that Jesus Christ Himself works in the heart—a holy transformation, a holy catching indeed. Yet the figures, images, and words used here are not altogether pleasant. No one would feel very comfortable thinking that he was being fished for. Whatever the subject, if we said, “So-and-so caught me like a fish,” or spoke of nets and fish, none of these expressions would sound very flattering. Indeed, we even use the word “fish” to tell someone that he is foolish. “You are a fish,” we say—that is, “You are a fool.”
You let other people catch you. To remove this objection, Saint Cyril continues: “Not to put you to death, but to put you to death and then make you alive.” Christ is not fishing for you in order to kill you, as a fish is killed when the net is pulled from the water. Rather, after putting you to death, He will make you alive. To what will He put you to death, my brother? To your sins. He will help you put your sins to death, so that you become dead to them and to the passions. My brother, if you are someone who loves wine, would you not wish to stop loving it? If you are someone who loves sensual pleasures, would you not wish to stop desiring them?
Would you want that? Without question, yes. Since you would want it, then let yourself be caught by the hook of Christ. It will not put you to death. It will put only the passions to death. It will make you alive, giving you a new life, and you will be truly happy. For you must die. “You must die and rise again.” You must die to the passions and rise again. After all, have you not heard what the Apostle says? “Dead to sin, but alive to righteousness.” Dead to sin and alive to virtue. “Die, then, to your sins”: die to your sins and live in virtue. “From this very day, live.” Here is the remarkable thing.
Am I to be caught? Yes. Today, as you are caught, learn from this very day how to live. “From today—from this very day—live.” Once, the following words were written on a man’s grave. He himself had left instructions that they be inscribed upon his tomb:
“Seventy-six years. But the years I truly lived were only six, for during seventy of them I was dead, and only in the last six did I live.” He had left instructions for this to be written on his grave. What did he mean? He meant that for seventy years he had not known Christ. He was dead. Only in the final six years of his life did he come to know Christ. We often hear similar testimonies from people who say, “Now I am truly living, from the time my eyes were opened and I saw the light of Christ.” If any brother has not yet understood this, I pray that the Lord will indeed hook him and that from this moment onward he will live—living the life of Christ. The sixth paragraph says: “See what great dignity Jesus bestows upon you. You were called a catechumen, one who heard the teaching only from outside. You heard of hope without knowing it; you heard of the Mysteries without understanding them; you heard the Scriptures without knowing their depth. No longer does the teaching merely sound around you; now it sounds within you.”
“For you now have the indwelling Spirit, who makes your understanding divine. When you hear what has been written concerning the Mysteries, then you will understand what you did not know. And do not imagine that what you are receiving is a small thing. Though you are a wretched human being, you receive a title belonging to God. Hear Paul say, ‘God is faithful.’ Hear also another passage of Scripture saying, ‘God is faithful and righteous.’ Foreseeing that human beings would receive a title belonging to God, the Psalmist spoke in the person of God: ‘I said, you are gods, and all of you are sons of the Most High.’ But take care that, although your title is ‘faithful,’ your intention is not that of an unbeliever.”
“You have entered the contest; complete the course. You will not have another opportunity like this. If a wedding day lay before you, would you not set everything else aside and occupy yourself with preparing the feast? And now, when you are about to consecrate your soul to the heavenly Bridegroom, will you not abstain from bodily things so that you may receive spiritual things?” Look—see: “See what great dignity Jesus bestows upon you.” See how much dignity Jesus gives you. Does Jesus bestow dignity? Yes. When the infinite God bends down to look upon me, does that not give me dignity? You know that a grievance borne by very many people, if not by everyone, is that others sometimes do not value them. My dear friends, it is a very great sin to deny a person his worth—to despise him throughout his whole life and never pay any attention to him. Do you know how deep a grievance this creates within the soul?
Think about this: could it be happening in our own home, where a husband never shows his wife that she has value? Listen, I hear this complaint. I hear a wife say, “My husband has never once thanked me. He has never said, ‘You cooked the meal well.’ My spouse has never told me, ‘You too have worth in this home.’ Never.” Pay attention to this. It is tragic when such things exist within our own homes. Out in society at large, of course, these things happen: people are pushed aside by others in their own profession.
We have our work, and yet our own colleagues push us aside, regard us with suspicion, slander and accuse us, and try by every possible means to get ahead of us, and so on. What exists in society is not noble striving together, but rivalry—a rivalry in which each person seeks to devour the other. Consequently, there is contempt; people do not recognize one another’s worth. That is what happens outside, in the jungle we call human society. But should that jungle exist within our homes as well? That is dreadful. And so a great many people, whether in society at large or in their own homes,
live with this sense of being belittled, of never having been noticed.
And this can happen even within the Church, my dear friends. If it did not, Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, would not have written that when a man wearing gold rings enters—a rich man adorned with golden rings—you say to him, “You sit here in this fine, prominent place.” But when a poor man enters, you tell him, “You sit over there, beneath the footstool, down on the step.” To use our choir stalls as an example, you tell him to sit down there on the step of the stall, while the other man is given the finest seat. Why? Because this man is poor.
So it is profoundly important when a believer comes to understand that Christ bestows worth upon him. It is profoundly important. Do you realize just how important it is?
Even when we try to address this within human societies, there will always be people who are belittled in life. And what can continual, long-standing humiliation produce within a society? What else but social revolution? What do you think these social revolutions are? They happen because people are belittled in every possible way, these conditions persist for years, and eventually people rise up against society as a whole and start a revolution. What do you think the revolutions of recent times—the revolutions of the last two centuries, for example—have been?
The pressure built until it became unbearable, and then people turned against others because they felt belittled and wronged. If this did not exist within human society, there would be no revolutions. But is it possible for us to have perfect societies? No. Then what must we do? We must now apply these truths personally, to each individual. You may tell me, “Father, you are looking for a needle in a haystack. Nothing can be accomplished this way.” But I would tell you that I am not looking for a needle in a haystack. Applying these truths to each individual person is of fundamental importance. We will never be able to make the masses of humanity into what they ought to be.
It is always a matter of persons. And when a person, however much others may belittle him, knows very well that he is not belittled by the incarnate Son of God, feelings of hatred toward society will never arise in that person’s soul. Never. For he knows that God Himself has already stooped down and taken notice of him. That is why Saint Cyril says these famous words: “See what great dignity Jesus bestows upon you.” Look, he says; look at the worth Jesus bestows upon you. Here we find the eternal element
in Christ’s teaching: He attends to persons. If you wish, we could call this pastoral care directed personally to each individual. We are not to see people as a mass, but as persons. “You were called a catechumen, one hearing the teaching from outside.” You were called a catechumen, but you heard things only from the outside—fragments here and there of the essential truths you should have learned. That is what it means to hear from all around: you catch one fragment here and another there. “Hearing of hope, yet not knowing it.” You heard of the hope of eternal life, but you did not truly know it.
“Hearing of the Mysteries, yet not understanding them.” You heard about the Mysteries, but you did not understand them. You heard about the Scriptures, such as the New Testament and the Old Testament, but you did not know their depth—“not knowing the depth.” “No longer does the teaching merely sound around you; now it resounds within you.” This is a beautiful little phrase, a lovely one.
This is the key: “No longer does the teaching merely sound around you; now it resounds within you.” In other words, you will no longer be someone who merely hears things from the outside; the teaching will enter and resound within you. You will no longer learn fragments from whatever you happen to overhear people saying. You will sit down and learn everything properly, because the Holy Spirit dwells within you and makes your soul truly godly.
May this Spirit of God come and dwell within you.
To show you that Christ truly takes notice of you and has bestowed great worth upon you, listen: when you hear these things written about the Mysteries, you will understand what you did not know before. And do not imagine that what you are receiving is a small thing. In truth, you are a wretched, sinful human being, and now you receive the name of God: “You receive an appellation belonging to God.” Now you receive the name of God. Shall I explain it even more clearly? Listen to what Paul says in this passage and that one—I need not repeat them. And would you like to hear something else, from that well-known Psalm?
The Psalm says, “I said, you are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High.” Do you see, then, what a great blessing you receive from Christ? He makes you, neither more nor less, a god by grace. “I said, you are gods.” As we have said, you receive an appellation, a name belonging to God. Before we continue, I would like us to consider this in the following way. When someone first begins, he knows neither the depth of these things, nor the Mysteries, nor Holy Scripture. But if he shows even a basic measure of patient endurance, he succeeds in this: he gradually enters more deeply
into the Mysteries of God. This requires a great deal of patient endurance. Do not imagine otherwise. To become wealthy, a person must save one drachma at a time. To become educated, he must go to school every day. And to enter into the spirit of the Word of God, he must learn as a disciple with great patient endurance. Each time, he will hear something new or study something new. Little by little, little by little, one day he will find himself possessing great riches, a vast treasure. But only in this way can he truly become rich in the Lord: by gathering his treasure with great patient endurance. But take care!
“Do not bear the name of a believer while your intention remains that of an unbeliever.” Take care that, on the one hand, you do not bear the name of a believer—being called a god by grace and a son of God—while, on the other hand, your intention is that of an unbeliever. My dear friends, have you considered that this may often happen to us? We could put it, with a slight change, like this: we are called Christians, but the way we live is anything but the life and conduct of a Christian; it is the conduct of an unbeliever. This should move us to examine ourselves. Is our conduct that of an unbeliever? The Apostle Paul once went so far as to write to the Corinthians
that a sin so grave was reported among them that it was not even heard of among the Gentiles. It was the sin of incest. Such a thing was inconceivable even among the Gentiles—that is, among idolaters—yet you who are believers are doing it. Or consider what God says elsewhere in the Old Testament: “Because of you, My name is blasphemed among the Gentiles.” Because of you, My name is blasphemed by those outside, by idolaters and unbelievers, because your faith and your life do not agree.
Let us pay close attention to this, my dear friends. I think these coming days will give us an opportunity to demonstrate it. Take care: these days will reveal it. Which days? The days we are passing through now. Do you know how many opportunities for worldly living will arise? Then it will become clear whether we are consistent in our spiritual life or not. If today you listen to the Word of God, but tomorrow you sit at the green felt card table playing cards, how can the two be reconciled? Can they be reconciled? My brethren, take care. I beg you earnestly, and I pray that the words I am about to say will resound within your ears—not merely sound around them, but resound within them: I listen to the Word of God.
I will not go and play cards, even if I used to play this year, nor will I go to sinful entertainments. I beg you; I implore you. If we truly want consistency, that consistency is not merely for the sake of those outside, so that we may present them with a good image. First and foremost, it is for our own sake, so that our faith—or, better, our name—and our life may agree. You will know the story about Alexander the Great. It was once reported to him that a Greek soldier had shown cowardice in battle. Alexander asked him, “What is your name?” And the soldier replied:
“Alexander.” His name was Alexander—the same as Alexander the Great. Alexander the Great said to him, “Take care: either change your conduct or change your name. I am brave; you cannot bear my name and be a coward.” Christ will say the same: either change your conduct or change your name. You will no longer be called a Christian. You cannot call yourself a Christian—sometimes even saying it emphatically and boasting of it—when your faith and your life, your name and your life, do not agree. The seventh paragraph says: “It is not possible to receive the washing twice or three times and say, ‘I failed the first time, but I will succeed the second.’ For if you fail that one time,”
“Then the matter cannot be remedied. For there is one Lord, one faith, and one Baptism. Only certain heretics are baptized again, because their first baptism was not truly Baptism.”
Is it possible, he asks, to be baptized two or three times? Suppose you were to say, “Well, I failed after my first Baptism; I will succeed after the second or third.” You cannot do that, because Baptism is one and is not repeated. If you fail, then you have failed; you are a Christian who has fallen short. Of course, Saint Cyril does not intend this as an absolute statement, because a little later, specifically in his First Catechesis, he will speak about metanoia—repentance—and repentance unquestionably repairs what has been damaged after Baptism. Repentance is described as a second Baptism.
It is a Mystery of God’s love for mankind, because I do not know who could keep the Mystery of Baptism spotless and preserve the baptismal garment white. That is why our baptismal garments are made white again through the tears of metanoia—repentance.
God forgives us because He loves mankind. But would it not be good for us, as far as we can, to keep our Baptism pure? I may have to repent because I fell into fornication, but would it not have been better never to have fallen into fornication at all? Would it not have been better never to have reached the point of blaspheming sacred things, especially?
And there are other, other, other grave sins as well; I am mentioning only the gravest examples.
That would be best. And there is something else. Yes, I may be forgiven, but will the inclination that has formed within me simply leave? Let me give you a simple example. Those who have acquired the habit of blaspheming may eventually repent and are unquestionably forgiven. Yet at some moment, when they find themselves in difficulty, a blasphemy may burst out again before they even realize it. Why? Because of the habit they have acquired. A beginning was made in something evil. Should this ever be allowed to happen? Is it not better that it never happen at all? We cannot say, then, “It does not matter; we have the Mystery of repentance.” No, my dear ones. But let me return, at least, to this passage.
Saint Cyril’s absolute statement here is that there is one Baptism. You cannot say, “I failed the first time, so I will return for a second and a third Baptism.” He takes this from the Apostle Paul, who says in Ephesians, chapter four, verse five: “There is one Lord, one faith, one Baptism.” That is the theological argument. But Saint Cyril is a catechist. He is not merely giving a theological analysis; he is concerned with practical life and with firmly establishing the true faith in his catechumens. That is why he makes digressions. He himself says, as we shall see a little later, if not today, that we say many things and repeat them.
We do this because we want these truths to become firmly established within you. He is teaching a lesson, not delivering rhetoric; he is teaching. And a teacher repeats things and makes digressions in order to strengthen and firmly establish a point. So here he says something that he might perhaps have left unsaid, because he also wants to give his catechumens some necessary knowledge. There is, of course, a kind of rebaptism: that which is performed for heretics. Quite simply, when people have been baptized by heretics, those heretical baptisms are invalid. That is why he expresses it this way. He tells the catechumens this for their instruction. Indeed, my dear ones, if someone was baptized by Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Church will unquestionably baptize him; you should know that. Those people are heretics. When such a person comes into our Church, he will be baptized.
And so forth. But since we have reached this point, allow me to add something, because we too are not here to deliver rhetoric but to teach. What happens if someone was baptized, later became a Jehovah’s Witness, and then returns? Must he be baptized again because he denied the faith? No. Baptism is not repeated. Then is it enough for him simply to repent? No. Something else must also be done, in addition to repentance and Holy Confession: he must be chrismated again. The Mystery of Chrismation can be repeated, but only very rarely. This very rare exception applies specifically to the case of heresy. That is, if a person...
...has fallen into grave sins—sins of the flesh, many murders if you like, or whatever else you may name—the Mystery of Chrismation is not repeated. The Mystery of Holy Confession is sufficient. But if someone falls into heresy and then returns, in addition to repentance he must be chrismated again. As I told you, this is a rare case, and it is done only then. What does this mean? When we were baptized, together with Baptism we received Chrismation—that is, the material bearer of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Through heresy, however, the Holy Spirit is driven away, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are no longer present. If I appear to possess certain gifts, they may often be demonic.
Yes, demonic. Is it possible for me to possess demonic gifts? Of course. Can I possess intelligence that is demonic? Of course. Can I possess a piety or devotion that is demonic? Of course. Such qualities may outwardly appear to be gifts of the Holy Spirit, while in reality they are demonic. I may possess zeal that is not a gift of the Holy Spirit but a gift of the demon. Yes, indeed. Look at the heretics; look at the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Have you seen how much zeal they have? Do you see how they speak? Have you noticed that they do not become angry? If you insult them, they will not insult you in return; if you drive them away, they will not curse you.
If you...
...say whatever you like to them, they will persist in their zeal. They will return again and again to your door to achieve what they desire. And you may say, “What virtue these people have! Just look at their virtue!” My dear ones, that is not a virtue of the Holy Spirit. It is demonic zeal, a demonic “virtue”—and I would place the word “virtue” in quotation marks. Yes, the devil can make use of what appears to be virtue in order to achieve what he wants. Certainly he can. When I became a heretic, I lost the capacity for the virtues. Therefore, I must be chrismated again and receive Chrismation once more—the material bearer—so that I may regain the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This alone, then, is repeated.
Eighth paragraph: “God asks nothing else from us except a good disposition. Do not say, ‘How will my sins be blotted out?’ I require only willingness and faith. What could be simpler than this? But if your lips say, ‘I am willing,’ while your heart does not, remember that He who judges knows the heart. Beginning today, turn away from every evil deed. Let your tongue speak no indecent words; let your gaze commit no sin, nor wander toward useless things.”
God asks nothing else from you except a good disposition. Do not say, “How will my sins be blotted out?” Here I would like to pause for a moment. Indeed, because we have more or less lived within the life of the Church...
...and have grown up in this way, we take many things in the life of the Church for granted. But they are not always self-evident to someone entering the Church for the first time, as was the case with the catechumens then, who entered the Church as adults. Such a person could therefore ask, “Is it possible for my sins to be forgiven?”
Of course, people say this even today. Their minds cannot grasp or contain the thought that their sins can be forgiven. They doubt the Mystery of Holy Confession and say, “Is it really possible for a priest to do this? Who is the priest? He too is only a man. Will my sins be forgiven through the priest?” Or, if they have been influenced by Protestant ideas, they say that we can confess our sins before an icon or in the forest. Some are romantics, you know, and say that we should tell our sins to the forest. We will shout them out there, where no one can hear us. Only the trees will hear our sins, and then we shall be cleansed. My dear ones, this is certainly not self-evident. It requires deep faith to believe that your sins are forgiven. On what is this faith based?
It is based on two things, as Saint Cyril says: “I require only willingness and faith. What could be simpler than this?” Two things: you must desire to be saved, and you must believe that you can be saved—that your sins can be forgiven. Let me dwell for a moment on this matter of believing. Do you believe that Christ is God? If you believe it, my brother, then Christ declared that the representatives He appoints through ordination have authority to forgive sins. He said it. Therefore, if you believe in Christ, you can say with confidence, “I believe that my sins too are forgiven.”
Can you imagine the torment suffered by someone who does not believe that his sins are forgiven? It is a terrible thing, truly terrible. Such a person will never find peace in his soul—never. Nor will he ever possess the fruit of peace, which is joy. Never. Why? Because he did not believe that his sins are forgiven. We must believe this. It is a matter of faith. Believe that sins are forgiven. “But is that possible?” Christ said it. Christ said it. So what remains? Two things, as Saint Cyril says and as I too shall repeat. You must believe that Christ said it and that He alone has the power to forgive sins; and you need only desire to lay down your sins, and they will be forgiven.
Psychiatrists and psychologists—and there is a difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist: a psychologist is not a physician, while a psychiatrist is—if psychologists and psychiatrists had a way to convince their patients that their guilt had been blotted out, they would cure people’s illnesses. Or even as a preventive measure, if they saw that guilt might cause problems for a client, and if they had the power to blot out that guilt, then the client would not enter into illness.
But neither psychiatrists nor psychologists have this ability, simply because sin has a metaphysical dimension, not a physical one. Unless we wanted to deceive someone by saying, “I want you to believe that you bear no guilt,” no matter how much we told him this, he would never be convinced if what we said were not connected with a metaphysical reality—with God. He will be convinced only when we connect what we tell him with God, and when he believes that God has said that his guilt is wiped away through confession. Only then can he find peace. And as you know, the source...
As you know, the source of neurosis and every psychosis is always guilt. All psychiatry and psychology revolve around a single center—the center called guilt. This guilt is erased only through confession, that is, through faith that it can be taken away. From the moment a person believes this, he is no longer so easily in danger of becoming ill with neuroses and psychoses. This is of tremendous importance. Therefore, no matter how many people psychiatry and psychology may have won over at the present time...
Psychiatry and psychology may have won over crowds of people, so that ten may go to a psychiatrist while only one goes to Confession, but this privilege belongs to the Church alone. And it is a tragedy that ten may go to a psychiatrist while only one goes to Confession. It is a tragedy. I have given you this brief analysis so that you may understand what lies at the heart of every neuropsychological disorder. It is what we call—and I repeat it once more—guilt.
If your lips say, “I want this,” but your heart does not, take heed: the One who judges you knows the heart. I would like to pause here again for a moment. My beloved, when...
When the lips say, “Yes, I want this,” but the heart does not, it is not merely a matter of simple inconsistency. I told you earlier that we Christians must be consistent. It is something deeper, and I would like you to pay close attention to it. For if I prove inconsistent before God, before myself, or before other people,
Of course, this has consequences, and it is unquestionably not good; but the matter goes deeper. What lies beneath it is this: a conflict arises between “I want to” and “I do not want to.” My lips say “yes,” but my heart says “no.” A conflict arises within my own self, resulting in what psychology also calls inner conflict. You know that such conflicts are the source of many evils and many illnesses, when the life I am living inwardly is different from what I may say or do outwardly.
A person has peace and health—especially spiritual and emotional health—only when what is within and what appears outwardly are one and the same. Then there is no inner conflict. Please pay very close attention to this matter of inner conflicts. A true Christian should never live in such conflict. What, we might ask, is the main driving force behind these conflicts? The conscience. For example, when I do one thing while my conscience tells me to do another, and I persist in it—when, in other words, my actions contradict my conscience—then, if this continues for a long time, it will create problems within my soul. And these problems, these consequences, take many different forms. Thank you.
And this becomes noticeable to those around me. You see people—and what can I say? I have often observed people whom you might think have something against you. But they do not have anything against you; they are at odds with themselves. We often wonder, “What is wrong with this person? A little while ago he said good morning to me, and now he will not. A little while ago he smiled at me, and now he does not. What happened? What is troubling him? Did I do something to him?” No, he has nothing against you. He is a victim of his own inner conflicts. This is especially so when a person has sins that he would very much like to conceal, yet does not want to correct—particularly when his conscience tells him that these sins are very serious. Take homosexuality, for example. I tell you sincerely, I have very often seen people in this situation suffering from terrible inner conflicts—terrible inner conflicts.
They find themselves in a situation that they love, while at the same time wishing it did not exist. Yet they still love that situation, and so they live in inner conflict, with their behavior changing from one moment to the next. One moment you see them speaking kindly to you; the next, they speak harshly and turn their back on you. You say, “What has happened to this person? What is wrong with them?” And there are countless other examples, countless other examples. This changing behavior is nothing more than the result of these inner conflicts. Saint Cyril puts it very beautifully: “Do not say with your lips, ‘I want it,’ while saying in your heart, ‘I do not want it.’” Here, however, I must clarify that I am not speaking about cases of spiritual struggle.
For our own self is sluggish when it comes to doing good. When I truly believe that I must become a better person—when I believe it, pay attention, truly believe it—but I am weak and fall, then I have no inner conflict. Pay close attention to this point; it is very important. When my will is divided, I experience inner conflict. But when my will is not divided, when I wholeheartedly believe in what I desire, yet I am weak and fall, then I have no inner conflict. This, after all, is precisely what the spiritual struggle consists in. What struggle? I am someone who truly believes in what I desire. I desire it wholeheartedly, one hundred percent, but I am weak and fall, and I struggle continually to rise again.
There is spiritual health within me. No conflict at all, no conflict at all. Then I can say, “I am on the right path.” But here, my dear friends, we shall stop, because the hour has grown late. And speaking from this Monday lecture series, since all of you also attend the Sunday talks, I would like to wish you a good spiritual struggle. Indeed, with the new year, let us set a milestone—or rather, make a new beginning—in our spiritual struggles, and pursue them with consistency. The Lord who became man will help us. This is why He became man: to help us in this struggle. I wish this for you with all my heart.
May the Lord who became man help us in our struggle to attain His Kingdom. I wish you a blessed feast.

στον εαυτό σου να σε ψαρέψουνε οι άλλοι. Για να αναιρεθεί αυτό, λέει στη συνέχεια ο Άγιος Κύριλλος: «Ουχ ίνα θανατώσει, αλλ’ ίνα θανατώσας ζωοποιήσει». Και δεν σε ψαρεύει ο Χριστός για να σε θανατώσει, όπως γίνεται η θανάτωση στο ψάρι, τραβώντας το δίκτυ έξω, αλλά για να σε ζωοποιήσει, αφού σε θανατώσει. Σε τι θα σε θανατώσει, αδελφέ μου; Στις αμαρτίες σου. Θα σε βοηθήσει να νεκρώσεις τις αμαρτίες σου, να γίνεις νεκρός ως προς αυτές, ως προς τα πάθη. Δεν θα ήθελες, αδελφέ μου, όταν είσαι άνθρωπος που αγαπάς το κρασί, να μην το αγαπάς πια; Άνθρωπος που αγαπάς τις ηδονές, να μην τις θέλεις πια;
Λοιπόν... Λοιπόν, πολύ μεγάλη σημασία έχει, όταν κάποτε ο πιστός αντιληφθεί ότι ο Χριστός του δίνει αξία. Πολύ μεγάλη σημασία έχει. Ξέρετε πόσο μεγάλη σημασία έχει;
Και αν το κάνουμε μέσα στις ανθρώπινες κοινωνίες, πάντοτε θα υπάρχει η υποτίμηση στη ζωή. Τι μπορεί να μαγειρέψει μια συνεχιζομένη, χρονίζουσα υποτίμηση μέσα σε μια κοινωνία; Τι άλλο παρά μια κοινωνική επανάσταση. Τι νομίζετε, τι νομίζετε, τι νομίζετε ότι είναι οι κοινωνικές επαναστάσεις που υπάρχουν; Γιατί υποτιμώνται άνθρωποι καθ' οιονδήποτε τρόπο, καθ' οιονδήποτε τρόπο, και χρονίζουν αυτές οι καταστάσεις και κάποτε οι άνθρωποι ξεσηκώνονται εναντίον του κοινωνικού συνόλου, κάνουν μια επανάσταση. Οι επαναστάσεις των τελευταίων καιρών που γίνονται, ας πούμε τους τελευταίους δύο αιώνες, τι νομίζετε ότι είναι;
Για να σου πω ότι πραγματικά σε προσέχει ο Χριστός και ότι σου χάρισε μεγάλη αξία, άκουσέ το. Όταν ακούσεις αυτά τα μυστήρια, τότε θα καταλάβεις εκείνα που δεν εγνώριζες. Και μην νομίσεις ότι είναι μικρό πράγμα αυτό που παίρνεις, γιατί εσύ στην πραγματικότητα είσαι άνθρωπος οικτρός, αμαρτωλός. Και τώρα παίρνεις όνομα Θεού. «Θεού λαμβάνεις προσηγορίαν». Τώρα παίρνεις όνομα Θεού. Και θες να σου το πω καλύτερα; Άκουσε τι λέει ο Παύλος, το και το, να μην τα επαναλαμβάνω. Θες ακόμα κάτι άλλο που λέγει ο γνωστός εκείνος ο Ψαλμός;
Μας συγχωρεί ο Θεός γιατί είναι φιλάνθρωπος, αλλά δεν θα ήταν καλό, όσο μπορούμε, να κρατάμε το βάπτισμά μας καθαρό; Πρέπει δηλαδή να μετανοήσω γιατί έπεσα στην πορνεία. Δεν θα ήταν καλύτερο να μην πέσω ποτέ στην πορνεία; Δεν θα ήταν καλύτερο ποτέ να μην φτάσω να βλασφημήσω τα θεία, ιδίως;
Βέβαια, και σήμερα το λέγουν αυτό άνθρωποι. Δεν μπορεί να σηκώσει, να χωρέσει το μυαλό τους ότι μπορούν να συγχωρεθούν οι αμαρτίες τους και αμφισβητούν το μυστήριο της εξομολογήσεως και λέγουν: «Είναι δυνατόν ποτέ ο ιερεύς; Ποιος είναι ο ιερεύς; Και αυτός άνθρωπος είναι. Διά του ιερέως θα συγχωρεθούν οι αμαρτίες μου;». Ή, αν έχουν δεχθεί επιδράσεις προτεσταντικές, ότι μπορούμε να λέμε τις αμαρτίες μας στην εικόνα ή στο δάσος. Μερικοί, λέει, είναι και ρομαντικοί, ξέρετε, και λένε ότι πρέπει να πούμε τις αμαρτίες μας εις το δάσος. Εκεί θα τις φωνάξουμε, να μην τις ακούει κανένας. Θα τις ακούνε τα δέντρα μόνο, τις αμαρτίες μας, και τότε καθαριζόμαστε. Αγαπητοί μου, βεβαίως δεν είναι αυτονόητο αυτό. Είναι θέμα μιας βαθιάς πίστεως, να το πιστέψεις ότι οι αμαρτίες σου συγχωρούνται. Πού στηρίζεται αυτό;
