Summary
St. Cyril of Jerusalem’s catechetical program leads candidates from preparation through instruction in the Creed to mystagogical teaching on Baptism and the Divine Eucharist. The lecture distinguishes Baptism from Chrismation and explains the latter as the apostolic laying on of hands continued through anointing with Holy Chrism. The early Church restricted the unbaptized from the Eucharistic mysteries to prevent profanation, while teaching openly through apologetic works and admitting sincere seekers.

Since last time there were not enough of us because of the feast of Saint Nicholas, I wanted to briefly repeat that Saint Cyril of Jerusalem has the Procatechesis, eighteen Catechetical Lectures for those preparing for illumination, and five Mystagogical Catecheses. The Procatechesis serves as a kind of introduction and reception, and sets out certain requirements for those who are about to receive catechesis in preparation for Baptism. They were called those preparing for illumination. When this Procatechesis was completed—it was, as I told you, a kind of reception of those preparing for illumination...
...into catechesis, which consisted of lessons given to candidates for the Christian faith who were preparing to be baptized. Once they were baptized, they were called the newly illumined. But their catechesis still did not end; they were then given these five lectures known as the Mystagogical Catecheses. The first eighteen Catechetical Lectures are essentially an exposition of the Creed. In other words, the Creed provides the framework for the course and for the explanation of the content of the Faith. Saint Cyril speaks about faith, about God, about Jesus Christ, about the Holy Spirit, about the Church, and so forth. The five Mystagogical Catecheses explain the Mysteries of the Church, especially the Mystery of Baptism and the Holy Eucharist. That, in just a few words, is the content of the Catechetical Lectures. Last time we covered the first paragraph of the Procatechesis. We had just a couple of lines left to finish before continuing to the next paragraph. There Saint Cyril announces to them that their names have already been entered in the registers of the Church and that they are now being led toward becoming faithful Christians.
They must, however, have a good and sincere intention if they are to proceed. They should not go forward to Baptism, or even receive catechesis, unless they have such an intention. Saint Cyril insists on this matter of free and deliberate intention. He insists upon it so strongly that we see him returning to the subject again and again whenever the opportunity arises. He is deeply concerned that someone might come either to spy on matters of the Faith or to pursue some other self-serving purpose. So he insists upon this point and returns to it repeatedly.
Toward the end of the first paragraph he says: “For God is generous in doing good, but He awaits the sincere intention of each person. Therefore the Apostle added the words, ‘to those who are called according to His purpose.’ When your intention is sincere, it makes you one of the called; for even if your body is here, if your mind is not, you are not benefited at all.” He says that although God Himself is generous—that is, rich in beneficence—He waits for each person’s sincere intention. If He sees a good intention, then God will bestow His riches. But if He does not see that good intention, then God will not...
...bestow His riches. This is why the Apostle says, “to those who are called according to His purpose.” That is, they are called and invited, but called in accordance with their intention. This is a much-discussed and very important passage from the Epistle to the Romans, chapter 8, verse 28. The Protestants failed to attend to it and fell into the doctrine of absolute predestination. The text does not simply say “called,” but “called according to purpose.” You are called by God to salvation because God already sees your intention. He does not arbitrarily show favor by calling you at random. No. God sees people’s intentions, their free and deliberate choice, and therefore He calls those in whom He sees an intention toward salvation. This is why it says that God predestined them for salvation. But how did He predestine them? Does God show partiality? Does He predestine me but not you? No, that is not how it is. God sees our intention. And do you know where, how, and when He sees it? Before I am born—before the foundation of the world, if you will. God knows those who are called and chosen before the foundation of the world, but He sees their intention. God shows no partiality, and when your...
...intention, Saint Cyril says, is sincere, it makes you one of the called. That is, it makes you one of those invited who will respond, precisely because you have a good and sincere intention. For even if your body is here—physically present here—but your mind is somewhere else, you will not be benefited in any way. I would like to extend this point to something we often fail to notice. I do not wish to speak about intention itself, but I will use Saint Cyril’s own phrase as he states it. Sometimes my body is present at the Divine Liturgy, but my mind is not present at the Divine Liturgy; it is somewhere else.
Will I be benefited at all? If my body is present for a sermon but my mind is wandering elsewhere, I will not be benefited at all. We should understand that when we go to participate in the Divine Liturgy or to hear the Word of God, our mind must always be present. Otherwise, we gain nothing. But someone might say, “Suppose I am tired, or something else is wrong, and I am going to fall asleep during the Divine Liturgy or the sermon. Should I simply not go at all?” No. Again, I would say no.
However much I may doze, my ear will still catch something. After all, my intention is not bad; I am simply tired, or I am troubled by matters that I do not have the strength to put aside so that I can concentrate on the sermon or the Divine Liturgy. Thus, even if I cannot pay close attention—not out of irreverence, but out of weakness—I should certainly go, because I will still gain something. And now we come to the second paragraph: “Simon the magician once approached the baptismal font. He was baptized, but he was not illumined. He immersed his body in water, but his heart was not illumined by the Spirit. His body went down and came up, but his soul was neither buried with Christ nor raised with Him.”
“I recount the outlines of these falls so that you yourself may not fall. These things happened to them as types, but they were written for the admonition of those who continue to approach even to this day.” Saint Cyril gives an example here. He refers to Simon Magus. It is the familiar account in chapter 8 of the Acts of the Apostles, which perhaps all of you know. When Philip the Deacon went to Samaria, Simon the magician was active there—a powerful, fearsome, extraordinary magician. Everyone, from the least to the greatest, paid attention to this man. When he saw people being baptized...
...and the Spirit of God coming upon them, and when he saw signs being performed—or Philip himself performing signs—he concluded that he had found a better magician than himself. That was how he understood Philip. So he asked Philip to baptize him, so that he too might become like him—that is, so that he might acquire greater skill and experience in his magical trade. Philip baptized him, but because Philip was not one of the foremost Apostles and was simply a deacon, he performed Baptism but did not perform the other Mystery.
We have these two Mysteries together: Baptism and Chrismation. Chrismation is nothing other than what took place in the early Church when a bishop or an Apostle laid his hand upon those who had been baptized so that they might receive the Holy Spirit. Today this laying on of hands—the placing of the hand upon the baptized person—is performed through Holy Chrism. It is a Mystery: Chrismation. For all the bishops, according to the custom of the Patriarchate of Constantinople...
...according to custom and as a mark of honor, gather for a special rite in which the laying on of hands is, in a manner of speaking, conveyed through a material bearer. This material bearer is the fragrant oil, made by blending many aromatic oils and fragrances. It becomes the bearer of divine grace, of the Chrismation of the Holy Spirit. The word comes from “to anoint,” to apply oil. This is how it is done today because we cannot have a bishop present at every Baptism, much less the Apostles of those days. Thus, after Philip baptized Simon the magician, an Apostle had to come to administer Chrismation—that is, the laying on of hands—so that those who had been baptized might receive the Holy Spirit.
So, once again, these are two Mysteries. When the Apostle Peter arrived in Samaria, he began laying his hand upon each believer, and the faithful then manifested wondrous signs and gifts of the Holy Spirit. At that point Simon was beside himself with amazement when he saw what could be accomplished. The wretched man took money, went to the Apostle Peter, and said, “How much money do you want? Here, take it. Give me the power to do what you do.” The Apostle Peter looked him straight in the eye and said, “May your money perish with you.”
“Did you think that the grace of God could be bought and sold? I see that you are filled with wickedness. Go and repent, so that God may not punish you.” Simon replied, “Pray to the Lord that He may not punish me.” The account ends there and says nothing further. From Church history, however, we know that this man did not repent and that he is presented as the leader of a heresy. He was certainly not the first originator of Gnosticism, but he mixed Judaism with Christianity and is presented as the leader of a heresy. Indeed, he is considered a starting point of this evil. Historically, as I told you, Simon Magus was not the only one; there were many others. Nevertheless, he is regarded as a patron of Gnosticism in this mixing of Christianity, Judaism, magic, and so forth. So this man did not repent. Saint Cyril now uses Simon’s example here... But note one more thing: every act involving a Mystery in which money is used, not as a gift but as part of a transaction, is characterized as an act of simony.
It takes its name from Simon Magus, who offered money in exchange for the giving of the Holy Spirit. Do you understand? Suppose a Baptism takes place and the person being baptized, or the person’s relatives, offer a gift to the Church or the priest—money, goods, food, grapes, fruit, or something of that kind. That is unquestionably not an act of simony. It is an offering, a gift, like the gifts offered in the Old Testament, either to the Temple or to the priests. But if someone comes and says, “I will give you money so that you will speak to the bishop and perform this Mystery for me. You say that it should not be done, but I will give you money to do it,” then that act is called simony. And since this issue does not arise so much...
...in Baptism and the other Mysteries—because one person wishes to be baptized and another wishes to enter Holy Matrimony—the issue does not usually arise there. Where it does arise is in Holy Orders. That is where this matter presents itself today: someone goes to the bishop and gives him money to ordain him—to have him ordained by God. Then both the person who offers the money and the bishop who accepts it commit an exceedingly grave sin. It is called an act of simony and is condemned by the Canons of the Church. As I told you, the term comes from this conduct of Simon. Let us return, then, to Saint Cyril. He says: You have seen what happened to Simon Magus. “He was baptized, but he was not illumined.”
He was baptized, but he did not receive the illumination of the Holy Spirit. He “immersed his body in water”; that is, he baptized his body and put it into the water, but his heart was not illumined by the Holy Spirit. His body descended and rose again in the threefold immersion and emergence. His soul, however, was not buried with Christ. For it is well known that Baptism—I will not say more now, because we will come to the subject in its proper place, although it will still be some time before we reach Baptism—is our participation in the death and Resurrection of Christ. It is a mystical act: if we do not die with Christ, we will not rise with Christ. That, we might say, is its mystical aspect.
As for what we can see, what do we see? We see the threefold immersion into and emergence from the water. The water is the symbol of the tomb. I enter the water and am buried, and then I rise. I am buried and rise again, signifying that I was buried and, after three days in death, am raised, just as Christ was. What does this mean? To die with Christ, to be buried with Christ, and to be raised with Him means that I place my life and my whole being under the life of Christ and become a participant in Christ’s sufferings. And just as Christ died and rose, so I too will die to sin. I will also die biologically, because we must all pay the common debt of death, and afterward we shall be raised.
As the Apostle Paul says in the sixth chapter of First Corinthians, “God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.” He raised the Lord and will raise us as well by His power. Saint Cyril now says: If you do not live this reality—that is, the hidden, mystical dimension of the Mystery—then how were you benefited by being baptized? For this reason, my dear friends, we see people today being baptized yet ultimately receiving no benefit at all. And what does Saint Cyril say here? “I recount the outlines of these falls.” I give examples of falls—of spiritual ruin—“so that you yourself may not fall.”
That is also why we are discussing all these things here: so that we may finally understand that we must acquire a deep awareness of what once happened to us, though at the time we had no awareness of it. It is not enough simply to say, “I was baptized.” Today, my dear friends, children may even say to you—the children in your own families—“Who told you to make me a Christian? Who told you to baptize me?” and so on. This means that neither our children understand why, nor do we ourselves. Do you know the sad answer we may give? “My child, this is what I received from my mother and father, and so this is what I did for you.” What a fine argument! And that is not an appeal to Tradition. To speak in the name of a Tradition is something of great importance.
But only if this tradition is also grounded in a conscious understanding of what it means. I cannot simply say to my child, “This is how I received it, so this is what I do.” Is that really an argument, my dear friends? It is no argument at all if I myself do not understand what has happened to me. I too must learn what has happened to me and become conscious of what it means to have been baptized. Then my Baptism will truly bear abundant fruit. “For these things happened to them typologically, and they were written for the admonition of those who come forward even to this day.” This phrase, “they happened to them typologically,” is very important. Holy Scripture tells us this as well; the Apostle Paul says it in his Epistle to the Hebrews. All these things were recorded in Holy Scripture
as types—that is, as examples and models, either to imitate or to avoid. And what happened to them can also happen to us. They are examples and models, as I have explained, teaching us always to take care in our lives about what we imitate and what we avoid.
Let none among us be found putting grace to the test. Let no root of bitterness spring up and trouble us. And let none among us enter saying, “Let me see what the faithful are doing. Let me go in and observe, so that I may learn what takes place there.”
“Do you expect to observe without being observed yourself? Do you think that you can scrutinize what is taking place, while God does not scrutinize your heart?” Let there be no one among you who wishes to test the grace of God or put it to the test, according to the words, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” Nor should anyone have within himself any kind of root—
a root of malice, bitterness, or wickedness. Let no one say, “Come, let us go and see what the faithful do.”
“We will pass through the ranks of the catechumens and be baptized, so that we can enter the Divine Liturgy and see what they do in there.” For, as I have told you—and as you know—the Divine Liturgy was closed to outsiders. The Church, as an organized body, kept its doors shut. You could not enter unless you had been baptized and enrolled in the Church’s registers. You could not take part in the Divine Liturgy unless you were baptized. The catechumens remained until a certain point and then departed. The words “The doors!” which we still hear today have become, as I told you last time, a kind of remnant from the past. Once, they described an actual event: the doors were closed, and the catechumens departed instead of remaining inside.
Therefore, they could not know what took place in the Mysteries. You may ask whether this secrecy contributed to the slander directed against Christians. To justify the persecutions, my dear friends, the enemies of the faith went so far as to claim—through a deliberate distortion of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist and the teaching that Christians eat the flesh and drink the blood of Christ—that Christians held Thyestean feasts and engaged in Oedipal unions. In other words, they claimed that Christians held orgiastic banquets, slaughtered a little child, drank its blood, and ate its flesh.
Afterward, they alleged, the Christians engaged in immoral acts with one another. The first accusation was called a Thyestean feast, while the second was called an Oedipal union, referring to what Oedipus did with his mother and so forth—the familiar stories you know from history. And whom did they accuse of these things? The Christians—the most pure Christians. They did so either because they had misunderstood what was happening or because they intended to slander the Christians in order to persecute them. However you understand it, the point is this: someone might say, “Let me go and see what happens in there and what these Christians are doing.” You may ask, then, why the doors of the Church were kept closed.
Would that not be something very wrong, when everything ought to be made public? There was no objection to making everything public. We see this, my dear friends, in the two Apologies of Justin the Philosopher. One was addressed to the Roman Senate and the other to the Emperor. He sets forth the faith and its worship in complete detail—so precisely, in fact, that we regard his account as an authentic tradition concerning what was celebrated during the Divine Liturgy. And yet these details come, for example, from an Apology addressed to the Senate. Does that not strike you as remarkable? Christians had no reason to hide anything.
They had no reason at all. But then you will ask, “Why were the doors closed?” Solely to prevent profanation. That was the only reason. For the Lord said, “Do not give what is holy to the dogs”—that is, to unbelievers—“nor cast your pearls before swine.” They will not understand; they will trample them underfoot. If you ask what this means for us today, you can see that the matter is still very relevant.
Someone might compare this with the Freemasons. The Freemasons are a closed organization. You cannot enter into their mysteries, for they do have mysteries—do not forget that. You cannot enter into them. Does that mean there is some relation or valid comparison between the two? The Freemasons themselves say, “One day we will open our gates, and people will learn what lies within.” The lodge of Holland or Belgium—I do not remember which—once said, “The time has come to open our gate, or rather our gates, and let the world know what we have.” The English lodge replied, “No, the time has not yet come.” But that is beside the point. What matters is this:
these people are not merely concerned that their mysteries might be profaned. They are plotting against humanity, and their plans are not yet mature enough to be revealed. The Freemasons are evildoers; this requires no proof. When the activities of Rome’s P2 Lodge were exposed—activities directed against the Italian government and, more generally, against many people—you remember what was published that summer, do you not? So I ask you: could those things that came to public attention
really have withstood public exposure by the Freemasons themselves? Certainly not. That lodge was nothing but a den of schemes and vested interests, reaching the level of criminal wrongdoing against human society. But tell me: what could be hidden or secret within the Church that would make the Church afraid to open her gates and show precisely what takes place in her Mysteries? Nothing. She had nothing to fear. She feared something else: that unbelievers would profane the Mysteries—and that profanation would ultimately harm the unbelievers themselves. Let me give you a brief example from Holy Scripture itself, which I believe will be sufficient.
Christ spoke in parables. Once, when His disciples asked Him to explain a parable, He said to them, “To those outside I speak in parables, but to you I speak openly. I speak in parables so that they may hear without understanding and see without perceiving.” This raises a question. It seems strange. What, then, was the purpose of the Lord’s teaching? A parable is an image, or a series of images, that clarifies a teaching of Christ. That is true. Yet at the same time, a parable also conceals the truth. It clarifies the truth and reveals it, while simultaneously concealing it. His disciples might have said to Him, “But Lord, do You not wish to speak clearly, so that people may know Your teaching? How, then, can You say that they should hear without understanding?” The answer is clear. Some of His listeners did not have a sincere disposition. They were ready to misinterpret and distort whatever the Lord might say. For this reason, He spoke in parables, so that they would hear the story without understanding its deeper meaning. What, then, did the Lord do? He concealed the truth. From whom? From those who would profane it. And why did He do this? So that they would not incur a more severe punishment. For if they had known
the content of the faith in depth and then treated it profanely, their punishment would have been greater than if they had remained ignorant. Christ therefore did this out of loving compassion, so that they would not face a more severe Hell. That is why He did it, and that is why the Church does the same. The Church has no reason to conceal her Mysteries. The proof is that today anyone can see what we celebrate, so to speak. Anyone can enter and observe what we do. Are we doing anything else in secret? Consider the foolish argument of the Millennialists, who claim that priests hide God’s name from the faithful. What name are we hiding? And why would we hide it? For what reason? For our own benefit? If, as they claim, knowing that God’s name is Jehovah is so necessary for salvation, are we sending people to Hell
by withholding it from them? For what reason? Why? You see how foolish they are. But now you understand why the Church was closed rather than open, and why Saint Cyril insists on this point. You have come here saying, “Let us go and see what the faithful do and what they say. Once I am inside, I will observe and learn what takes place there.” What are you saying? Saint Cyril asks. Do you think that you can observe without realizing that God may also be observing you? Do you think that you can pry into what is happening—that you can investigate everything being celebrated here?
“And does God not scrutinize your heart?” My dear friends, let me give you a simple example, and you will understand. Suppose I notice some people and hide because I want to see what they are doing. I go behind a wall and peer out, trying to discover what they are doing. I am hidden, spying on them. Yet at that very moment, without my realizing it, one or two of them are standing behind me, watching what I am doing. Do you understand? It seems strange and even comical: you are watching others, while other members of the same group are watching you. You are hiding so that the others will not see you, while those behind you see everything.
The same thing happens with God. Have you come to pry into what we do in here? Poor man, God is watching you—the One who is present everywhere, who knows all things and knows every heart and every intention. And if you wish, Saint Cyril gives you another example in the third paragraph: “Someone once came to investigate the wedding feast of the Gospel. Wearing an unworthy garment, he entered, reclined at table, and ate. The bridegroom had permitted him to enter. When he saw all those dressed in white, he too could have put on such a garment, but he neglected to do so. He partook of the food, but his outward appearance did not correspond to his intention. The bridegroom was generous, but he was not undiscerning.”
“As he went around to each of those reclining at table and examined them—for his concern was not merely that they should eat, but that they should conduct themselves fittingly—he saw the stranger who had no wedding garment and said to him, ‘Friend, how did you enter here? Under what pretext? With what conscience?’” This is another example given by Saint Cyril. He is referring to the parable of the royal wedding banquet, in which a king arranged the wedding of his son and invited many guests. When they arrived, each naturally came in his own clothes, but he had to put on a special garment before entering.
We have something similar even today when we speak of attending a formal reception. Thank you. Military invitations specify the required uniform—whether full dress or what is called the walking-out uniform, and so forth. Those who entered the royal banquet were required to be dressed in white. One man entered without changing his clothes—that is, without taking the proper garment—and sat down at the table as he was. The host, walking among the guests, said to him, “Friend, how did you enter here without a wedding garment?” Remember also the troparia of Great Monday and Great Tuesday: “How shall I enter Your bridal chamber, O Lord, when I have no wedding garment?” The man had nothing to say.
Then he orders them to take the man, bind him hand and foot, and cast him into prison. What does this mean? It means that someone is trying to enter the Kingdom of God without being properly prepared, without metanoia—without repentance—and without a pure soul. That is the point. Now consider the other parable, in which the Lord tells His servant, “Compel them to come in.” Let them come to My table just as they are—lame, blind, poor, and dressed in rags. That is a different case. These are different aspects of one and the same reality, the Kingdom of God. Do not doubt that you can be saved. But when you come into the Kingdom of God, you must be clean. Whatever you may have been before, whatever your countless inclinations may have been—whether you were lame, blind, or clothed in rags...
Spiritually speaking, whatever you may be, God receives you. But now, when you are going to receive Holy Communion and continue receiving it, take care: you must be clothed in white. In other words, you must be clean and watchful, because you cannot receive Holy Communion without taking care over your life. Thus we see that each parable has its proper place. Saint Cyril takes this example and says, “Do you see what happened there? The bridegroom was generous, but not undiscerning.” In other words, although the bridegroom was wealthy and lavish and had prepared a magnificent banquet, he was not undiscerning. As he went around, he looked: Are you wearing royal garments? Are you clothed in white? After all, he says, you saw that the others were dressed in white.
They were wearing white garments. Did it not occur to you that you should dress in the same way? In other words, you see that the others have a sincere intention. You see the others striving. Did you not think that you ought to do the same? But in this very connection, listen to something very important: “Let us suppose that the gatekeeper did not prevent you, because of the generosity of the host. Let us suppose that, in your ignorance, you entered the banquet dressed as you were. You entered and saw the garments of those reclining at table shining brightly. Should you not at least have learned from what you saw? Should you not have withdrawn in good time, so that you might return in good time?” Let us suppose, he says, that the gatekeeper did not stop you because of the rich generosity of the one giving the banquet...
The host, that is, had in a sense given him permission. And who is the gatekeeper, my dear friends? A little later Saint Cyril applies this to himself. In the fourth paragraph he says, “For we, the deacons of Christ, receive everyone; and holding, as it were, the office of gatekeepers, we have thrown open the door.” We, he says—we are the gatekeepers. Your spiritual father is the gatekeeper. Let us suppose that he admitted you. He said, “It is Christmas; let us allow him to receive Holy Communion.” You know, I myself have done this many times even today. I have said, “You should not have received Holy Communion.”
“I will allow you to receive Holy Communion because it is Christmas”—because the banquet is abundant. You too should eat and not go away hungry. But take care. I have said these very words: “Out of generosity, I will allow you to receive Holy Communion.” Whose generosity? The generosity of the Master, that is, of the Lord, who receives you. But you, in turn, must respond with a sense of honor. How? From now on, you must take care over your life. You should not receive Holy Communion at this time, yet I am allowing you to do so; therefore, show your gratitude by being careful from this point onward. Of course, when we say, “I will allow you,” we mean that no very grave sins are involved—let that be clear. Even so, in this particular case you should not receive Holy Communion, but I allow you. This is what he means when he says, “We, the deacons of Christ, receive everyone; and since we hold the office of gatekeepers, we have thrown open the door.” We have left the door open.
We do not readily prevent people from entering. We want everyone to be helped. But what are you doing, my brother? What are you doing? Have you not learned from the way the others conduct themselves? You enter an assembly of people who are striving, while you yourself do not strive. You should leave—leave in good time, he says, so that you may also return in good time. You should leave and say, “I must correct myself.” Do you persist in fornication? Put an end to your fornication, and then come. Do you persist in greed? Correct your greed, and then come. You cannot enter the banquet of the Kingdom of God unless you have at least begun to put certain things right.
“You have entered,” he says in the fourth paragraph, “you have been counted worthy, and your name has been enrolled. You behold this venerable institution of the Church; you see order and discipline, the reading of the Scriptures, the presence of the canonical clergy, and the sequence of the teaching.” You see all these things, he says. You entered, you were counted worthy, you were given a name, and your name was enrolled. You see this venerable institution of the Church—the Greek word refers to something established. You see the order and discipline; you hear the reading of the Scriptures; you see everything, all the services, everything. “Have reverence even for the place itself.” Be ashamed before the holiness of the place. Learn to feel reverence and to ask yourself, “Where am I?”
I have known quite a few people who have said to me, “I went to the Divine Liturgy, but I felt deeply ashamed of myself because I had committed this or that sin. I felt terribly guilty and terribly unclean. I felt that I had no place among that assembly of those initiated into the Mysteries.” This is what Saint Cyril wishes to emphasize here: you must become conscious of the reality before you. You must understand, not that God will refuse to receive you, but that you cannot remain as you are and must begin to correct yourself. Have you followed how sincere this must be? This is why, in the ancient Church, we saw that wondrous phenomenon of Christians making spiritual progress. Today, this phenomenon is...
Very limited. Today we do not see our Christians making spiritual progress. They remain in a stagnant condition, always staying just as they are. There is nothing living in them—no living metanoia, no repentance joined to an effort to change their lives. If you have understood all that we have been saying, this is what Saint Cyril wants to emphasize: life must change. No one should say, “This is how I am, and this is how I will remain.” No. God will not receive you. God cannot receive you like that. He continues: “Does your soul wear the form of avarice? Put on another garment, and then enter.” Your soul, he says, bears the form of avarice. In other words, you are greedy. Put on another form, and then enter. And what is that other form? Become compassionate and generous toward others.
Become the kind of person who says, “I must no longer be greedy.” “Strip off the form you now bear; do not let it be exposed. Strip off fornication and impurity, and put on the radiant garment of chastity.” You are clothed in the garment of fornication and every kind of impurity. Take it off. It is not enough to say, “I will go and change my clothes, put on my white garments, and then go to receive Holy Communion.” First I must repent, change my life and my way of living, and then receive Holy Communion.
Saint Cyril says, “I charge you to do this before Jesus, the Bridegroom of souls, enters and examines your garments.” This is why a priest will sometimes say to the faithful before Holy Communion, “My brothers and sisters, if you have not been to Confession, do not receive Holy Communion.” Take care here, because I am drawing a parallel between the Mystery of Confession and the Mystery of Baptism. I repeat it once more because I too unquestionably desire the salvation of everyone. Confession is called a second Baptism. Therefore, whether we are speaking of the first Baptism or of the second, we must proceed as Saint Cyril teaches here: we must be baptized anew in the Mystery of Confession and repentance. And I will say this again. I make...
Repetitions and restatements, just as Saint Cyril does here, because the purpose is catechetical, not rhetorical. “I charge you,” he says. “I charge you before Jesus the Bridegroom comes to inspect you,” keeping before his eyes the parable He told about the royal wedding banquet. “I am warning you,” he says. “Take care.” And when will Jesus come to inspect you? When you have received Holy Communion within yourself. Then He will examine you. This is what we say in the prayers: “Let it not be unto judgment or condemnation.” Some people receive Holy Communion on an impulse, simply because the desire comes upon them at that moment, even though they are burdened with very serious sins.
When they see others receiving Holy Communion, they feel a longing, so they go forward and receive. My dear friends, this is not right. I must tell you that Holy Communion is not a means; it is the goal. All the other Mysteries are means, ways, and paths. The Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is the culmination and the goal: our union with Christ. For this reason, this Mystery has—if I may put it this way—a passive character. Perhaps you will find that expression strange. What do I mean when I say that the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist has a passive character? Listen. When I have some particular need—when I am ill...
There is the Mystery of Holy Unction. When I bear ancestral sin, there is the Mystery of Baptism. Personal sins are also wiped away through the appropriate Mysteries. All these Mysteries have a dynamic and healing character. But the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist has a passive character. That is, in all the other Mysteries, Christ comes to help us; Christ comes to take hold of us. In the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, however, we go to receive Christ. It is as though Christ remains still, so to speak, and we go to take Him. It is in this sense that I say the Mystery of the Holy...
Eucharist has a passive character. What does this mean? It means that we should not expect the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist to act dynamically in the same way as the other Mysteries. Of course it does have such effects—you will immediately point that out to me, because the prayers before receiving the Holy Gifts clearly express them.
But we must not expect to receive dynamic remedies merely by receiving Holy Communion—as though we will automatically recover from illness, be healed, have our sins forgiven, or obtain something else of that kind. Never say that. It is dangerous. For all these needs, we have the other Mysteries. But you will say to me, “Yet we pray...”
“For the forgiveness of sins and the healing of soul and body.” Yes, we say this in the prayers. But in those prayers we also ask that we may not become ill. The Apostle Paul says, “You receive unworthily, and for this reason you become ill,” and so forth. Or, conversely, we might say that someone who is ill receives Holy Communion in order to recover. Yes, there are cases in which a person recovers because he receives Holy Communion. But God grants such things extraordinarily. In its essential character, the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is passive in this sense: I go to receive Christ, rather than Christ coming to take hold of me. I go to receive Christ, and, if you will, through even my smallest sin Christ departs from me and is lost to me. This is why Baptism is never repeated.
The Holy Eucharist, however, may be repeated every day. I may receive Holy Communion every day. Why? Because at every moment I am in danger of losing Christ, and I want to go and receive Him again. The Holy Eucharist is the final goal of all the Mysteries: my union with Christ, eternal life with Christ, the eternal and incorruptible Christ.
“But if you persist in an evil intention, then forgive me: you have ample opportunity—strip off your garment, wash yourself, clothe yourself anew, and enter.” You have the opportunity. Go, strip off your old garment, wash yourself, dress yourself properly again, and then enter. This is what we have been saying all along. But if you persist in your evil intention, “the one who has warned you is blameless; but do not expect to receive grace.” I, who tell you these things, do not know the secrets of the heart; I am blameless. From the Royal Doors I will tell you, “Those who have not been to Confession, do not receive Holy Communion.” What you do after that is your own responsibility.
If, despite the warning, you approach with an evil intention or in a filthy garment, then that is your own affair and you bear the responsibility. In any case, do not expect to receive grace. This statement—“Do not expect to receive grace”—is extremely important, my dear friends. But I will return to it. Let me finish the paragraph: “The water will receive you, but the Spirit will not receive you.” The water of Baptism will receive you, but the Holy Spirit will not. “Whoever is aware of a wound within himself, let him apply the plaster”—let him take the medicine. “Whoever has fallen, let him rise. Let no one among you be a Simon.”
Let there be no hypocrisy and no idle curiosity about the Mystery. Let no one among you be found to be a Simon—the man whose story I told you—approaching with hypocrisy or merely out of curiosity to learn what the faithful do. But I will close with this: you may receive Baptism outwardly, yet not receive grace. That is the point. My brethren, if we receive Holy Communion without being properly prepared, we may receive from Christ a charge of accusation and a chastening condemnation—God forbid that it should be a final condemnation. But above all, we cannot receive the grace of God. This is why we see people...
...at Christmas, when thousands come to receive Holy Communion. For a moment one might say, “What joy! Look how many people there are!” Yet they do not receive the grace of God, because they make no spiritual progress. They crowd forward to receive Holy Communion, but in the end they are not benefited at all. What is gained? What is gained? So let us pay close attention to this point. What we must always seek is spiritual gain; and that gain is to possess the grace of God, so that we may make progress. Glory to God, there are Christians among us who do make progress. But this is what we must look for: Am I making progress? Am I advancing? If I am advancing, then I am on the right path. If I am not, then I must reconsider my life and examine myself to find the cause. I must change...
...so that I may enter the bridal chamber of the Kingdom of God clothed in white.

Κατόπιν επεδίδοντο — αυτό το πρώτο λέγεται θυέστειον δείπνον — και κατόπιν επεδίδοντο σε ανήθικες πράξεις μεταξύ τους, γι' αυτό έλεγαν οιδιποδείους μίξεις, ό,τι έκανε ο Οιδίπους με τη μάνα του κτλ. Τα γνωστά που ξέρετε από την ιστορία. Αυτά κατηγορούσαν ποιους; Τους χριστιανούς. Τους αγνοτάτους χριστιανούς, γιατί είχαν παρανοήσει τα πράγματα ή είχαν διάθεση να συκοφαντήσουν, για να διώξουν τους χριστιανούς. Όπως και αν το πάρετε, το θέμα είναι τούτο: ότι κάποιος θα μπορούσε να πει «Για να πάω να ιδώ τι γίνεται εκεί πέρα, τι κάνουν αυτοί οι χριστιανοί». Αν ερωτήσετε, γιατί υπήρχε κλειστή πόρτα στην Εκκλησία;
Πλευράς πνευματικής εννοείται, όποιος και να 'σαι, σε δέχεται ο Θεός. Τώρα όμως, προκειμένου να κοινωνήσεις και να κοινωνείς, πρόσεχε: θα λευχειμονείς, θα φοράς άσπρα, δηλαδή θα είσαι καθαρός, θα είσαι προσεκτικός, διότι δεν μπορείς να κοινωνείς και να μην είσαι προσεκτικός. Έτσι βλέπουμε ότι η κάθε παραβολή έχει τη θέση της. Παίρνει λοιπόν το παράδειγμα αυτό ο Άγιος Κύριλλος και λέγει: «Είδες τι έγινε εκεί πέρα; Ο νυμφίος», λέγει, «ἦν καὶ δαψιλής, ἀλλ' οὐκ ἄκριτος». Δηλαδή ο γαμβρός, αν και πλούσιος, πλουσιοπάροχος, έβαλε μεγάλο τραπέζι, όχι άκριτος. Γυρίζοντας είδε. Φοράς βασιλικά ρούχα; Λευχειμονείς; Επιτέλους, επιτέλους, λέγει, είδες τους άλλους να λευχειμονούν;
