Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s orally delivered catecheses were recorded by listeners, preserving the vivid and accessible character of his teaching. Because they preserve fourth-century doctrine, worship, and ritual at Jerusalem’s Church of the Resurrection, the catecheses provide important testimony to the Church’s apostolic continuity. Opening the preliminary catechesis, Cyril describes the candidates as standing before God’s Kingdom, called to enter the Church through Baptism with sincere intention and to bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

They were shorthand writers, some known and others hidden, stationed here and there throughout the space, recording—I am speaking of John Chrysostom—his immortal homilies. In the same way, the catecheses of Saint Cyril were recorded in this manner. And it seems that Saint Cyril never reviewed them afterward, as an author normally would when his spoken addresses had been written down: going through them carefully, as we might say, polishing them, removing something, adding something, and so forth. These catecheses were delivered orally to the catechumens, and that living speech was recorded. This is why, as you will see, his texts have such vitality. Thus, they are not a written composition, but...

Yet these catecheses of his are extremely precious, because they contain an immensely important body of material. The overall arrangement of the material is as follows: there is one Preliminary Catechesis, eighteen catecheses addressed to those preparing for illumination, and five catecheses addressed to the newly illumined, known as the Mystagogical Catecheses. The Preliminary Catechesis is an introduction. It was addressed to catechumens who were candidates for Baptism and were called those preparing for illumination. Thus, someone preparing for illumination is not simply a catechumen, but a catechumen whose Baptism is drawing near, who is on the eve of being baptized. Such a person was called one preparing for illumination. And they were held...

These catecheses were given to those preparing for illumination, who would chiefly be baptized on two occasions during the year. Usually there were two such occasions, of course, though this never prevented Baptism from being celebrated at any time. The principal occasion, however, was Theophany, which is why Theophany is also called the Feast of Lights. Those who have already been baptized are called the newly illumined, while those approaching Baptism are called those preparing for illumination. So on that day the newly illumined, now baptized, came to the Church wearing white tunics and carrying lighted candles. And because there was such a great outpouring of light at this...

This feast of Theophany is also the Feast of Lights; that is why it is called the Lights. Likewise, on the evening of Great and Holy Saturday, those preparing for illumination were baptized. Then, on Sunday, they received Holy Communion and entered fully into the Church as faithful Christians, or as the newly illumined—that is, as new believers. You know, these group Baptisms and common catechetical instructions brought unsurpassable moments of spiritual emotion to the Church. They were so powerful that when the catechumens had to leave halfway through the Divine Liturgy, before the celebration of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—something preserved today in the Divine Liturgy like a remnant from the past...

In the section called the Liturgy of the Catechumens, the catechumens would often cry out with heartrending cries because they had to leave. They had not yet been baptized and therefore could not remain for the rest of the Divine Liturgy. One had to witness the longing of these people to be baptized, to remain inside for the Divine Liturgy, and to delight in it—while today we, who are already baptized, so often approach the Divine Liturgy with such spiritual sluggishness. These were immensely powerful experiences that shook the soul and formed martyrs and saints. The catechesis, of course, took place before Baptism and consisted, as I told you, of eighteen lessons.

Catechesis did not end after Baptism; it continued. We have five catecheses addressed to the newly illumined—that is, to the newly baptized—and they are called Mystagogical because, after Baptism, the faithful were initiated into the Mysteries of the Church. More specifically, the Preliminary Catechesis introduces the subject of catechesis. The eighteen catecheses primarily interpret the Creed. As you will see, this runs throughout them. They begin with, “I believe,” and explain what faith means. Saint Cyril says beautiful things there about faith. Then comes, “In one God, the Father Almighty,” and so forth: teaching about God, followed by extensive teaching about Jesus Christ, the Word, who became man, and then about the Holy Spirit. Throughout all this, he includes a wealth of practical, moral, liturgical, and other teaching. This fills the eighteen catecheses. And as I told you, in the five remaining catecheses—for there are twenty-four altogether, including the Preliminary Catechesis—there is an initiation into the Mysteries of the Church: Baptism itself, especially the Holy Eucharist, Chrismation, and so forth. We might also say that the five Mystagogical Catecheses chiefly contain an exposition of the Lord’s Prayer. In the catecheses for those preparing for illumination, we have an exposition of the “I believe,” the Creed.

The five Mystagogical Catecheses have the Lord’s Prayer as their framework and foundation.

The value of these catecheses—and this is not my own judgment, but that of scholars of the Fathers—is beyond calculation, beyond price. This is because, in their words, the catecheses constitute the doctrinal and moral constitution of the Church, or even the Church’s foundational charter of liturgical rites. So many elements have been preserved, not only doctrinal but also ritual, that we may rightly say the following: although we are in the middle of the fourth century—these catecheses, which were recorded and preserved, are believed to have been delivered around AD 350, specifically in the Church of the Resurrection—we find remarkable continuity. We know the place from internal testimony. Somewhere in his teaching about Christ, Saint Cyril says, “In which church? Here, in this Church of the Resurrection where we are now.” Thus the catecheses were delivered in the Church of the Resurrection built by Saint Helen. They preserve so many ritual and liturgical details that we may rightly say that, to this day, we truly have the Apostolic Church. What the Apostles handed down as the Church is what we still possess today. This is extremely important evidence by which one can test the Orthodoxy of our faith, our...

Liturgical rites, and everything else. You will see all these elements as we examine them little by little, step by step, quite apart from their theological value. Naturally, we must remember that this is not a work by Basil the Great or Saint Gregory the Theologian, addressed to mature theologians in order to resolve theological questions.

Here theological teaching is being offered to those who are preparing to become believers. We must therefore come down to their level. Nevertheless, although Saint Cyril is addressing catechumens who are still uninitiated into the faith, his teaching lacks nothing in depth. Nothing at all.

We might compare it to catechetical school today: we cannot speak there in exactly the same way we would speak in a school of theology. Yet I say again that, even so, the level was very high and the content very deep. Do you know what this means? It means that the Christians of old received profound catechesis, not superficial instruction. This should lead us to reconsider the catechesis we give our Christians today, which is unfortunately shallow and superficial, and to return to these ancient models. Indeed, this series of catecheses is a model of catechetical teaching for the Church in every century and every age. In the catecheses of Saint Cyril, we find...

A pedagogical quality developed to such a degree that it astonishes us. These catecheses therefore also possess very great educational value. Furthermore, they contain a method of catechesis that amazes us. I will give you one example, something that today we do not readily observe or even mention.

And I will not even begin to speak about our schools. Often, when a teacher begins a course—and I appeal especially to new teachers, those who are still studying or are just beginning to teach in schools—the teacher should always give a brief introduction to the subject that is about to be taught. When they begin algebra, for example, they should tell the children what it actually is. Is it something you eat? What on earth is it? I remember the first time I studied algebra, because in those days we began it in the third year of the eight-year secondary school.

Forgive me, we studied it in the second year—what would now be the third year of junior high school. No, in the eight-year school, the third year corresponded to today’s first year of junior high school, because we left primary school after the fourth year and went on to secondary school. In any case, a twelve-year-old child cannot easily grasp the concept of algebra. When I saw the teacher writing on the board that A plus B produced C, I remember saying to someone, “Have you ever seen anyone add A and B and get C?” I did not understand. The simple reason was that the teacher began teaching the subject without first giving us an introductory explanation. Every subject should begin with an introduction that helps orient the students. What are we doing here now? We are giving an introduction so that we may understand where we stand and what it is that we are about to study. This is very important.

Saint Cyril does precisely this. Listen to something very important; you will see it and marvel. In one catechesis, he takes the entire content of what he is going to teach and presents it as a framework, a summary arranged in very short sections, all within that single catechesis. Afterward, as he himself says, “Once I have told you these things so that you may gain an overall picture, then, as we analyze the details, you will not lose sight of the whole.” How important this is! He gives them the whole picture, a kind of block diagram, an overview. This overall picture is impressed upon the catechumen, and only then does he proceed to analyze each part. Thus we truly encounter a catechetical method of immense value.

This series of catecheses is a model of Christian upbringing and formation. Do you know what kind of crisis we are experiencing at present in Greece? In catechesis, we face a crisis both of method and of content. You know this. A number of teaching aids were written some time ago. First there were the materials produced by Zoe; later came those of the Apostoliki Diakonia. But those materials are now old, dating from the 1950s. The editions we have from the 1960s are reprints of the older works; there has been no renewal. Both the content and the method are regarded as outdated. This is why we say that we face a crisis in both content and method.

Today we must find a way to offer catechesis. Indeed, I might even say that there is no complete, coherent plan, although the Apostoliki Diakonia in Athens operates a training school for catechists. Long ago, I myself attended such a school. Yet I repeat that, unfortunately, the methods often employed follow worldly models, and we fail.

The catecheses of Saint Cyril offer a model both in method and in content. Take note: they are a model. Anyone who wishes to become a catechist must study Saint Cyril’s catecheses very carefully, both for their content and for their method.

Theologically, the character of their content is both mystical and cataphatic. By mystical we mean apophatic theology, or negative theology; by cataphatic we mean that Saint Cyril uses affirmative elements, such as the created world and so forth. Thus, in the catecheses, we find both apophatic and cataphatic elements in Saint Cyril’s theology.

I would like to add one more point and then bring this brief introduction to a close. No one should say, “We are already believers; we are baptized, so we have no need of catechesis.” Consider that we were never properly catechized. Consider also that the Church never ceases to create settings for catechesis and to offer catechetical instruction to the faithful. These offerings may not take the form of a formal class, with a desk, notebook, and pencil, but they certainly contain elements of spiritual formation, as preaching does. What do you think a sermon is? It is an effort to instruct our people in matters of faith, to strengthen them in the faith, and to help them advance. This is why, when there is no preaching, the faith, moral life, and daily Christian conduct of our faithful all become weakened.

There is therefore a need for this continual formation of the faithful, even if it must take place afterward, since infant Baptism is now the usual practice. So I earnestly ask that, if we all wish always to make spiritual progress, we should regard ourselves as always belonging among the catechumens. That is where I personally place myself: I am the catechumen. If, by a certain concession, I may also be a catechist, then it is only by concession. According to the Gospel, you cannot be a catechist unless you were first a catechumen—and unless you remain a catechumen at the same time. So perhaps I am here—I do not know; circumstances have brought this about, and what else can we do?—to offer catechesis. Yet I, together with you, am also a catechumen; we are all catechumens together. I too must receive, I too must be edified, and I too must pay attention, so that I may be formed together with you. I have said all this by way of a brief introduction.

This, then, has been our introduction to the Catechetical Lectures of Saint Cyril. And now, with God's help and through the intercessions of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem—that most lovable Saint, whose personality you can see throughout the Catechetical Lectures—let us proceed. He handles everything that must be addressed so beautifully: with meekness and calm, with strictness in matters of faith, yet always with great love. He was a beautiful person—and I always mean inwardly beautiful—a gracious and lovable person. Through his intercessions, then, let us proceed. We begin with the Preliminary Catechesis. Its subtitle is, “That Is, a Prologue.”

A Prologue to the Catechetical Lectures of Our Holy Father Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem.

The catechesis is divided into paragraphs. This division was, of course, made later to help us study each lecture. This Preliminary Catechesis contains seventeen paragraphs. The first paragraph reads:

“The fragrance of blessedness is upon you, O candidates for illumination. Already you are gathering spiritual flowers with which to weave heavenly crowns. Already the sweet fragrance of the Holy Spirit has breathed upon you. Already you have reached the outer court of the royal palace. May you also be led within by the King.”

“The blossom has already appeared upon the trees; may the fruit also come to full maturity. For now, your names have been enrolled; you have been called to serve as soldiers; the lamps of the bridal procession are ready; there is longing for the heavenly way of life, a good and sincere intention, and the hope that follows it. For He who said, ‘All things work together for good for those who love God,’ does not lie. God is indeed lavish in doing good, but He awaits from each person a genuine resolve. Therefore the Apostle added, ‘to those who are called according to His purpose.’ When your resolve is genuine, it makes you one of the called. For even if your body is here, but your heart and understanding are not, it profits you nothing.” You see, there is a certain rhetorical quality in the way he begins.

Yet it is not ornate or overloaded at all. It has a certain simplicity, and it is an address to the candidates for illumination. After all, he says, “O candidates for illumination.” Then he continues with this restrained rhetoric. Remember that highly elaborate rhetoric was fashionable in those days. Today that style of rhetoric no longer exists; in our age we understand rhetoric very differently. We may call a lawyer, a public prosecutor, a speaker at a formal celebration, or generally anyone who delivers a speech an orator. But, as I have said, the forms of rhetoric today are very different.

Our understanding is different from that of antiquity. If we were to translate one of the rhetorical speeches of that period into today's style, people would certainly find it unbearable and unappealing. These too are forms, you see, and forms change. That does not matter; what always matters is the substance. The language, as you have noticed, is simple. It is, of course, from the fourth century after Christ, but it does not have the elaborate theological language of the Fathers of the Church—of Gregory, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, Gregory of Nyssa, and the others. It is not difficult. Since the catechesis was addressed to catechumens, it clearly could not be burdened with difficult and convoluted language.

With a little effort, you will see that anyone who completed the old secondary-school curriculum could understand the text very well. There are hardly any unfamiliar words that would cause you difficulty—only a very few. The text, therefore, is accessible, I would say, to most of you, if not to all. If you took it and studied it at home—and that is what you should do—you would be greatly benefited. “Already,” he says, “the fragrance of blessedness is upon you, O candidates for illumination.” There is already, he says, this fragrance, this scent of blessedness and happiness. What blessedness? The blessedness of the Kingdom of God. In other words, you already bear its fragrance.

Using this image, he is saying that the fragrance of blessedness is already upon you. I remember when I was a little boy in the first grade, during my first days at school. When I came home, my mother would pretend to sniff the air. She would wrinkle her nose and say, “My, my! How my child smells of school!” I did not question it. A little child is innocent and cannot understand very much—or at least children were innocent once; I do not know whether first-graders are still innocent today. I would try to smell myself and discover what scent I might have, because they told me I smelled of school. And I wondered what this special fragrance of school could be. Yet it was a very good way to give me the sense that someone who goes to school has a lovely fragrance

and should therefore love school. It was a beautiful and charming touch of teaching, I would say. Saint Cyril uses the same image here, beginning with his very first words: “You bear,” he says, “the fragrance of blessedness.” And truly, my dear ones, a person who is beginning to live the spiritual life bears the fragrance of blessedness. There is also a fragrance of death. These expressions are found in Holy Scripture, though at this moment I do not remember where. Yes, the fragrance of death. And this fragrance of death means nothing other than that this person smells of Hell. So this is not merely a literary flourish intended

to flatter the catechumens, as orators commonly flatter their audience at the beginning of a speech, or flatter the judges, as the ancient orators such as Lysias did. No! It is a reality. Truly, the person who is beginning to believe bears the fragrance of blessedness. “Already you are gathering spiritual flowers with which to weave heavenly crowns.” Already, he says, the flowers are being gathered—not material flowers, but spiritual ones. And these spiritual flowers are nothing other than all that you will now gather:

theological truths, together with everything arising from your practical life and your virtues. Indeed, the virtues and theology belong together, for do not imagine otherwise: the highest virtue is theology. Never forget this. You may ask me, “Is theology not something theoretical?” Saint Symeon the New Theologian says that there are faith, hope, and love, and above love stands theology. For through love you will come to see God, to acquire knowledge of God, and to speak about God—that is, to attain theology. Love, then, is the path; theology is the goal, the knowledge of God. Do you see? Of course, we do not mean theology merely in the sense of saying, “I am reading a theological book.” It is not so much that, but

something deeper. Indeed, he says something that may seem discouraging; we often read it. What is this discouraging saying? Let me leave Saint Symeon aside for a moment. What is it? You cannot speak about God unless you have seen Him. That is something indeed! This is why we said that theology is a virtue, even something higher than love. So you gather all these spiritual flowers in order to weave crowns—heavenly crowns, unfading crowns, crowns of glory. Please remember the well-known vision from the martyrdom of the Holy Forty Martyrs. The pagan soldier who stood guard was watching the martyrdom of those forty young men in the frozen lake of Sebaste. For a moment, one of them came out of the lake and began

to leave because his courage had failed. Then the soldier who was guarding the martyrs in the lake, making sure that they did not come out, saw a vision. He saw forty angels holding forty crowns high above the heads of the martyrs. But when one of the soldiers—one of the martyrs—came out of the water onto dry land to warm himself, and thus to betray his faith by saying, “I cannot do this; I cannot endure any longer,” one angel holding a crown began to withdraw upward toward heaven. When the guard saw this wondrous sight, he acted so that the crown would not be lost. In that single instant, faith was born in him—an astonishing thing—and faith and martyrdom came together.

Both were born at the very same moment. Then the pagan guard himself cried out, “I am a Christian!” He plunged into the lake and took the place of the man who had come out of the water, and once again there were forty. You see, then, from this vision and from many other examples—the word “crown” also appears in the Apocalypse: “Take heed that no one takes your crown of life”—that the crown is an image of the glory of those who remain faithful. “Already the sweet fragrance of the Holy Spirit has breathed upon you.” Already, he says, the sweet fragrance of the Holy Spirit has begun to breathe. The Apostle Paul says this: that you are the fragrance of God. The Holy Spirit gives forth a sweet fragrance.

If you wish, this fragrance may even be perceptible to the senses, not merely spiritual. As you know, a spiritual person may never wash and yet still give forth a sweet fragrance. What I am telling you is borne out by the testimony and experience of the Church. Above all, the bones—the relics—of a Saint often give forth a sweet fragrance. Why do Holy Relics so often have this fragrance? And why do they sometimes stream with myrrh? Because, while the Saint was still living in this present life, those Holy Relics became a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. Have we grasped this point? This is why we venerate the relics of the Saints.

The Holy Spirit does not abandon a person's body when that person dies. The Holy Spirit does not abandon the body, just as He does not abandon the soul. The Holy Spirit is indivisible and present everywhere. The soul has gone to the place appointed for it, united with the Holy Spirit. The body has remained in the grave, also united with the Holy Spirit. This reveals the great worth of the body, which the Holy Spirit will give back to us renewed on the day of the resurrection. Thus the sweet fragrance of the Holy Spirit truly breathes forth. “Already you have reached the outer court of the royal palace.”

He says: you have reached the outer court of the royal palace. What is this royal palace? It is the Kingdom of God. You were not yet within the Kingdom of God; you were in its outer court. And what is this Kingdom of God? The Kingdom of God, my dear ones, is the Church. The Kingdom of God has two aspects: the earthly Church, called the Church Militant, and the heavenly Church, called the Church Triumphant. But because you had not yet been baptized, you were still outside the gates. What, then, is the gate through which you enter the Kingdom—that is, the Church? It is Baptism. You had not yet been baptized, but you were in the outer court. This is why he says, “Already you have reached the outer court of the royal palace.” “To what shall I liken,” says the Lord, “the Kingdom of Heaven?”

To what, He asks, shall I liken the Kingdom—the Kingdom of God? And He gave many parables

He gave many parables in order to reveal, through each one and in a different way each time, a particular aspect of the Kingdom of God on earth—that is, the Church. “And may you also be led in by the King.” May Christ the King Himself lead you into His royal dwelling—that is, into His Kingdom—and receive you into His Church. “The blossom has already appeared on the trees; may the fruit also come to perfect maturity.” At this moment we have the flowering. The blossoms, the spiritual blossoms, have appeared. You are those blossoms. May God also grant the fruit: may you mature spiritually and bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

“Your names have now been inscribed; you have been called to military service; the bridal torches have been lit; there is a longing for the heavenly way of life, a good intention, and the hope that follows.” Each of these expressions is extremely significant. I would like to dwell especially on the words, “Your names have now been inscribed.” What is this inscription of names? It is a list of names. “Your names have now been inscribed”: the list has been made, and your names have been entered upon it. But what list is this? What exactly does it mean? As you know, the faithful are inscribed in the diptychs of the Church and are commemorated. The catechumens are first inscribed in the register of the Church so that they may enter the Church, and afterward their names are placed in the diptychs of the Church. Here we encounter a very important matter, one that by itself could occupy us for an hour, if not many hours. Of course, we shall say only a few words, because it is well worth our attention and, if you like, it is a subject to which we shall apparently return. What is the issue? Does the Church know her members, or does she not? When the Church keeps registers, it means that she knows her members. When she does not, she does not know them. Do not tell me about a parish keeping the names of parishioners merely so that it can issue certificates for social services,

or for some other purpose, when a parishioner needs to go to the priest and request a certificate, or wants to send his child, for example, to a university residence and must document his family circumstances. That is not what we mean. In such a case, the parish office has simply been turned into an office of the state. And, to be frank, matters were even worse in earlier years. Nowadays, of course, many such responsibilities have been taken out of the priest’s hands, rightly or wrongly—you may judge that as you wish. The fact remains that today the parish priest has far fewer of them, because other offices have been established. And in one sense this is right, because those responsibilities belong to the state. As I said, the priest had been used for matters of this kind. Is that what we are talking about? Are these the registers we mean? No. What, then? We mean registers in which...

the names of the faithful are recorded—not as entries in a civil registry, but so that we may know who our faithful are. For the Church, my dear friends, was in fact closed not only during the persecutions but afterward as well. Until when? Until infant Baptism became customary. The words “The doors! The doors!” which today remain in the Divine Liturgy like a fossil, once had real substance. They were not always merely a remnant. This was a technical command, meaning that the doors had to be closed

to the catechumens and to those who had no part in the worship, so that only the faithful would remain inside for the service. This means that the doors were watched: there was control over who entered and, afterward, over who remained in the Divine Liturgy. When the command “The doors! The doors!” was given, it did not mean merely that there was a doorkeeper, some appointed person responsible for closing the doors before the Mystery was celebrated. No. The faithful themselves—as we shall see later in the catecheses of Saint Cyril—would look at one another to see whether anyone was unknown. Each person would look beside him and all around him to see whether there was an unfamiliar face. No one could remain who

was not known and whose name was not entered in the registers; he had to go outside. The Church, then, was closed. Later, however, the doors of the Church were opened and became stuck wide open. As you know, in recent years the question has been raised whether the Church ought to close her doors again. Only a few years ago—two or three, perhaps four; I do not remember exactly—this issue arose. The bishop of Florina had taken the initiative and drawn up registers of the faithful. This became the object of attacks from many sides. Those attacks were unjustified, my dear friends.

The Church must return to her former manner of life and organization. She must know her faithful. It should not be left to someone to come and tell me, the priest, “Father, be careful. The man who is coming for the Baptism, the godfather who will of course recite the Creed, is formally a Freemason. Be careful not to accept him.” A Freemason! Do you understand what it means for a Freemason, an idolater, to become the godfather and sponsor and to recite the Creed while believing none of it? It is a profanation; it is unthinkable. But when the Church keeps her doors closed, she knows her children and her members, and she does something else as well: she forms them in the faith.

This closed circle, this closed Church, has many advantages. I shall illustrate this with an example that is not my own. It comes from a foreign theologian. I found it in Trembelas’s book Practical Catechetics. He says that when the doors of the Church are not closed, when the Church does not know her members, and when people enter the Church without catechesis, it is like pouring cold water into a pot of boiling water: the boiling stops. This is what happened, my dear friends. As long as the Church kept her doors closed, her pot was boiling;

we had catechumens who were formed in the faith before entering the Church. They did not barge in, as the saying goes, with dirty feet and heavy boots, but entered with care and proper formation. Once the doors were opened and infant Baptism became customary, what happened? The Church ceased to boil. The fervor died down, together with all that longing among the members of the Church to become saints. Today we have reached the point where members of the Church themselves mock those who are faithful and say to them, “So you want to become saints? Are you trying to act clever, or pretend to be holy?” Look how far we have fallen! It is dreadful, truly dreadful! I do not know when, but the Church will certainly close her doors again one day. She will be compelled to do so. She will know her members and inscribe them in registers; in other words, she will keep an inscription of names,

lists of names. And she will do this especially during the time of the Antichrist. When the Church is persecuted by the Antichrist, she will most certainly know who her faithful are.

This is an immense subject, but we have said only these few things. Indeed, it is not merely a large subject; it is a problem: whether this should be done, how it should be done, and so forth. There is guidance on the matter, but I have only taken this opportunity to mention it so that you may know about it and so that we may prepare ourselves for such a possibility, because one day it may become necessary.

Do you know what they accused the bishop of Florina of doing? They said that he was keeping files—maintaining dossiers on the faithful. People will say absolutely anything. For God’s sake! If I know the members of my Church, does that mean I am compiling dossiers on my faithful, on my parishioners? How absurd! Tell me: what association with registered members does not keep a list of those members? Tell me! And when the members’ names are written on a list, does that mean dossiers are being kept on them in the sinister sense of the word? But what did we say? When people want to attack the Church, they find any number of ways to do it. “Your names, then, have now been inscribed, and you have been called to military service.” So the person who enters the Christian life enters an arena of struggle and a place of military service. Of course!

The Apostle Paul says to Timothy, “Struggle and endure hardship. Endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ—of Jesus Christ.” My dear friends, this is a call to enlistment, a call to serve. The Christian is a soldier and must struggle. What does a soldier actually do? Whether in peacetime or in war, a soldier keeps watch and stands guard. And what else does he do in wartime? He fights. Since there is never peace between Christ and the devil, the faithful are always engaged in warfare. So it is highly significant that Saint Cyril says here that you have already

been called to military service. And what did the Apostle say about this service? “No one engaged in warfare entangles himself in the affairs of this life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him.” No one who has enlisted, he says, becomes entangled in worldly affairs, because he wants to please the one who recruited him. Do you see what Christ is called here? The One who enlists soldiers. The phrase is, “that he may please the one who enlisted him.” Who is the One enlisting? It is Christ, the commander who recruits me. And what am I? I am the one enlisted, the soldier who must please my Lord. Otherwise, I ought not to answer the call; I ought not to be a Christian. All these things, you see, constitute the true meaning of the closed doors of the Church. Do you hear?

This is the true meaning of the closed doors of the Church. The Church is not simply to draw up lists and shut her doors; that is only the practical arrangement. The essential thing is to form conscious, committed Christians and to ask each one, “Are you prepared to enlist for this warfare? Otherwise, you cannot enter.” And if we see that you are not remaining faithful to your service and fulfilling what is required, then you have fallen away.

You are a person who has fallen from your calling. You can no longer stand. You see, then, that this is an essential matter, not merely a collection of mechanical and technical procedures. “And the torches of the bridal procession.”

The word “nymphagogia” means bringing bride and bridegroom together. A nymphagogos is the one who brings about this union, like the sponsor at a wedding. Who, then, might serve in this role here? I do not know whether you have ever encountered the idea that the Apostle Paul is such a sponsor. Not with that precise word, of course, but in the sense that he is the nymphagogos, the one who brings the bride to the Bridegroom. “I,” he says, “betrothed you, the Church, to Christ.” How did he do this? In what way? He led people to faith and, once they had become believers, led them to Christ. The Church is the bride and Christ is the Bridegroom. Paul, therefore, is the one who joined the Church to

Christ, Christ the Bridegroom. What, then, is Paul? He is the nymphagogos, the one who brings the bride to the Bridegroom. There are so many points we have failed to notice because we do not study Holy Scripture attentively. Eliezer also appears in this role when he went and found Rebekah to become the bride of Isaac, the son of his master Abraham. But why go into every detail? My dear friends, God Himself is presented as the nymphagogos. How is God shown in this role? Listen to the words of Holy Scripture: “He created Eve and brought her to Adam.” He led Eve to Adam to be Adam’s wife. God, therefore, is the One who brings the bride to the bridegroom. You see? God Himself fulfills this role. Here Saint Cyril says,

“the torches of the bridal procession.” This clearly gives a festive tone; it is something celebratory. That is why they carried torches, as I told you at the beginning. We also have lights during Baptism and so forth. The newly illumined hold their candles and are in albis, clothed in white. It is a beautiful image, a truly beautiful one. Saint Cyril draws upon that image when he says, “the torches of the bridal procession and the longing for the heavenly way of life.”

He says that this longing has arisen within you—the longing for the heavenly way of life. In other words, the desire to live according to the heavenly order has now entered your hearts. He does not speak of an earthly way of life, but a heavenly one, because the faithful are called to live according to this heavenly order. The Apostle Paul says, “Our citizenship is in Heaven.” Here, “citizenship” means the manner in which we conduct ourselves and live. We speak of “the life and conduct of such-and-such a saint.” The saint’s life gives the biographical details, while his conduct describes his manner of living. That is what “citizenship” or “way of life” means. So, what do the words mean here?

What does “a desire for the heavenly way of life” mean? You have desired it; the words “has come to be” are understood here and throughout. The desire to live the heavenly way of life now exists within you. This is extremely important, you know. When one sees this in a hearer of the divine word—and I have said this before—I see it, I truly do, in many people. I will not say in everyone, but we do see it. When one sees this desire in people, this longing to live a spiritual, heavenly life, what a beautiful thing it is! What a beautiful thing! My dear friends, it is a true festival of the soul when a person has made the decision to live according to heaven, that is, to live a spiritual life. “And a good intention.”

The words “has come to be,” which he stated at the beginning, are understood throughout. And this good intention exists within you. You did not come under compulsion; no one pressured you. You desire it yourselves. Do you know how important this “good intention” is? I do not know whether you are aware that no Mystery is valid when it is performed upon a person against his will. If, for example, I am forced into Holy Matrimony, that union is invalid. This is well known. I chose Holy Matrimony as the example because it makes the point very clear. Any Mystery imposed upon me by force—if I were forced to receive Holy Communion, forced to undergo Baptism, and so forth—is invalid; it is as though it never took place. What does its validity depend upon? Upon one’s intention.

Intention is of great importance—great importance, tremendous importance. It is what sets every undertaking into motion, whatever it may be: intention. And when, in this case, the intention is good, then comes “the hope that follows.” A hope follows all these things: the hope that we shall attain and inherit the Kingdom of God. “For truthful is He who said that all things work together for good to those who love God.” The One who said this is truthful, for it is true—and the Apostle Paul records it in Romans 8:28—

that all things work together for good to those who love God. My dear friends, this is a profoundly important point: the Christian must feel and understand that, whether pleasant things happen or painful things happen, the decisive question in God’s permitting them is whether we love Him. If we love God, then whatever His love permits is for our good. “All things work together for good to those who love God.” For those who love God, everything works together for good. Everything—all things, without exception. This is so important. Let us pay careful attention to it and cultivate it, so that in this way we

will never complain about why God permits this or that. We will always ask ourselves, “Do I love God?” If I love God, then that is enough for me. God permits it because He too loves me. But we shall stop here, my dear friends, and, God willing, continue next Monday.

κληθήκατε σε μια στρατεία. Πώς έλεγε ο Απόστολος πάνω στο θέμα της στρατείας; «Ουδείς στρατευόμενος εμπλέκεται ταις του βίου πραγματείαις, ίνα τω στρατολογήσαντι αρέσει». Κανείς, λέει, δεν μπαίνει σε πραγματείες βιωτικές και κοσμικές όταν στρατευθεί, για να αρέσει σε εκείνον που τον στρατολόγησε. Είδατε πώς λέγεται εδώ ο Χριστός; Στρατολόγος. Είναι το «στρατολογήσαντι αρέσει». Ποιος είναι αυτός ο στρατολογών; Ο Χριστός είναι, ο στρατολόγος. Και εγώ τι είμαι; Ο στρατευόμενος, ο στρατιώτης, που πρέπει να αρέσω εις τον Κύριό μου· αλλιώς δεν πρέπει να ανταποκριθώ, να μην είμαι χριστιανός. Όλα αυτά, βλέπετε, αποτελούν την ουσία της κλειστής πύλης της Εκκλησίας. Ακούσατε;
