You will remember that we spoke about this serious event of the earthquakes, which occurred during the holiday period, as we might say. And we tried to remind ourselves that this warning bell is a serious one.
and it is a warning that our Christ has used in His love.
And we also said that we should place our trust neither in seismologists nor in geologists, nor in anyone else.
These things are in the hand of the Lord, and He orders them in His wisdom and His love. If we do not want to lose this life or be deprived of the life to come, let us take heed. As the divine John Chrysostom said in that festal homily in Constantinople, the earthquake is the wrath of God, and the cause of God’s wrath is our own sins. And God will cease to be angry.
If man does not stop sinning, God will go on striking against us. Not out of any malice — He wants man's salvation, and He uses every means.
He uses everything for our correction and spiritual upbringing. When man persists in sin, God is often compelled to bring down what is called the rod of iron. But unfortunately, in recent times we have reached such a degree of hardness and heaviness of heart that I do not know whether even one person has repented.
Whether even one person, I say, has repented. I mentioned the other day that, on my way back from the Holy Mountain, I stopped in Macedonia, at a monastery there. After a talk I had given, a discussion arose.
We were speaking calmly and informally there, beside the choir stall where I was sitting. A modern-looking lady came with her little child, and she too listened gladly to what we were saying. I did not expect her to remain and listen, but she sat there for about twenty minutes and heard us out.
And at the end, the words rose spontaneously from within her, and she said: “I will be the first to repent. I will not put on makeup again. I will not dye my hair again; I will not paint my eyebrows or my nails again. I will be the first to change.”
May it be so. This is God’s purpose, and this is what He seeks from us human beings. I do not know whether other people—or even she—put into practice what she declared in theory at that moment, when she heard that things were not going so well.
The only weapon man has, if he wishes, by which he can overcome God—by which he can disarm God’s almighty power and His justice—is metanoia, repentance. There is no other way.
God cannot be bribed or bought by anything. But when He sees repentance—when He sees repentance—the sword falls from His hands. It cannot remain raised; it cannot act. Then His justice gives way, and His mercy begins to act, as the Fathers say in many places.
He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
When He sees repentance, the matter comes to an end. And you know, if you examine all the events of the Old Testament, you will find that whenever God became angry, made decisions, issued decrees, signed and sealed them, He recalled them all: He withdrew His signature and erased His seal whenever repentance intervened.
Metanoia—repentance. As long as people did not repent, the justice of God was at work, with thousands upon thousands dead. Of course, God never finds it difficult to place people where they ought to be, because when the sword of God is at work, it often carries off green wood along with the dry. It does not take only the dry; it takes many others as well. Now, at the final clearing, they will be cleared away.
Only the dry branches will be removed, and the green ones will remain. The latest message is this: there will be a cleansing. I repeat, only the dry branches will go, and the green ones will remain—at least in Greece, for Greece is still needed for her language, her faith, and her very existence.
For she is the New Israel, through which God will stir the nations and proclaim the Gospel throughout the world. Here before me I find a point..
Someone left a note here this evening. I was already aware of it. I thank the brother or sister who was kind enough to return it. I had learned of it from another source and intended to use it this evening, and since the opportunity...
Thank you.
So, I am reading these words to you. What exactly does this say? This is a reprint from an Orthodox magazine published in America by a monastery of the Holy Trinity. The monastery belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, under Metropolitan Philaret. This account was sent as a letter from Russia to that monastery. It says: “I would like to tell you what happened here recently—that is, there in Moscow.”
A sign appeared in the sky above the city of Tambov, south of Moscow. In a clear sky, in broad daylight at noon, a white hand suddenly appeared, holding a pen with which it wrote the following words. Those of you who read Holy Scripture will have encountered such an event in the Book of Daniel, when Belshazzar drank wine before a thousand of his concubines, using the sacred vessels from Solomon’s Temple.
"Evil runs ahead of the good" — that is what it wrote. "The good has been left far behind. Today people do almost nothing but evil." And second: "Winter for my people, the people of God." They suffer the way a man suffers in the winter, under frost, under cold, under snow, under deprivation, and everything else of that kind.
Indeed, Christians here have begun to feel suffocated by the encircling grip of unbelief all around them—much more so in those places where the regime is antichristian.
Repentance. Repentance alone saves us and changes the course of events. Fourth, as I was telling you: no righteous soul will remain among the corrupt, and no prodigal soul will remain among the righteous.
The olive tree will be struck, and all the fruit damaged by the olive fly will fall—all that is rotten and filthy. Only the sound and healthy fruit will remain.
Fifth: pay heed to my salvation. My salvation. Pay heed to salvation—that is, who is God’s salvation? Christ. Everything centers upon Him. He is able to set things right.
Not merely the affairs of individuals, but of humanity as a whole, on a far broader scale.
“Bear fruits worthy of repentance”—not a barren repentance. “Yes, I believe in a higher power, in a supreme being. I believe in God,” or, “I believe in Christ.” No, such statements do not save. You must believe in Jesus the Nazarene: Jesus crucified, buried, risen in the Resurrection, and taken up in the Ascension. You must believe in Him.
Whatever else you believe in cannot save you. And you must bear fruit worthy of repentance. In other words, if you are truly repenting, you will set right every injustice as far as you possibly can. Whatever evil you have done, you will repair. Whatever you have stolen, you will return.
Whatever wrong you have committed, you will put right. Wherever you have slandered someone, you will ask forgiveness. You will admit, “I was the one who said this, and it is not true.” Only then does a person become worthy in the sight of God and find true security.
No insurance company can secure a person, either in this life or after death. That belongs to Jesus alone. There is only one insurance company, so to speak: the Orthodox Church of Jesus. She alone secures people both in this present age and in the age to come.
Seventh: salvation awaits those who fear God. And what does it mean to fear God? You know: it means to revere God, to take God seriously, and to reckon with Him. Is it not possible for a wife to fear her husband—to respect him, take him seriously, and reckon with him?
For she is from him, and not he from her—something that today has been turned upside down. Indeed, the woman herself demonstrates this by casting off the hair from her head. She accepts no protector; she wants no husband; she herself has become the head. For this is the purpose of women’s hair, which does not fall away: to remind them that they are under the man, so that they do not act irreverently or raise their head above the man. Now, if we empty-headed men give them positions as ministers, members of parliament, prime ministers, and so on, that shows what we ourselves are: so hollow-headed that we are incapable of governing them or anyone else. That is precisely why we have come to this sorry state. But God did not order things this way. He ordered them very differently. Therefore, let the responsibility for all your deeds be clearly known. Let that responsibility be known.
That is, consider carefully what account you will have to give for the deeds you have done. The time is near. These things will take place very soon. Ninth: Truly, I am coming. I will not delay. Amen.
The hand continued writing for about half an hour. What it wrote remained visible and could be read for approximately three hours. The apparition drew everyone’s attention and terrified them. Everyone was afraid, and all traffic came to a standstill.
I see here that this account was taken from the Orthodox Press of July 20, 1978. And it is not the only one. Some time ago, you heard the message the Prophet Elijah gave us. You also heard the message Saint Nektarios of Aegina gave us. All these things have been recorded.
So we have repeated them here as well. Nothing more is needed. As the popular saying goes, “A village in plain sight needs no guide.” If anyone were asked—even the most hardened and indifferent person—he would admit that things are not going well.
Are things going well? Something is hanging over us; something is going to happen. Things somehow seem frightening. And religious people, rightly so, feel a fear within themselves. They sense that something is going to happen—something is going to happen. When the recent earthquakes struck Thessaloniki, Father Ephraim was there that day. I do not know, but most of the gentlemen—the men—will probably know him. He is the abbot of the Holy Monastery of Philotheou on the Holy Mountain, a brotherhood that includes many young monks who are scholars, about eighty in all. So he said to his driver, “Yiannis, we must leave.” “Why, Father? Let us finish what we are doing.” “Something within me is telling me that we must leave. We must get out of Thessaloniki.” “Wait, my geronta, let us finish, so that afterward I can take you to Tzouliodis as well.” “Yiannis, we must leave.” And Yiannis obeyed.
“Giannis, let us get out of here and go to Michaniona.” Michaniona is about thirty kilometers from Thessaloniki. Before they had even reached it, the earthquake struck. “Giannis, something was telling me that we had to leave.” And now, if you approach people who are genuinely devout—not two-faced people who present one face and then another, but sincere believers—and ask them, you will find that they carry a fear within them.
...of these fears. Although Christ casts out fear, this fear does not entirely go away. For if something happens, even if a person survives, he will grieve. These are human beings, not rabbits. It is people—the whole world. And they will want their relatives to be among those who survive as well. I do not know who they will be. And so a person grieves. When our Christ went outside Jerusalem, He wept.
There was fear, because in the days of Titus everything was being destroyed. He sat down off to one side, spoke the funeral lament over her, and wept. No soul can simply go on rejoicing, nor can anyone be called a Christian who does not grieve along with others, because the commandment is: "rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep."
When the grace of God departs—whether from an individual, a household, a city, or a nation—terror comes, Satan enters, and everything changes. A person no longer feels well or at peace, as he does when he experiences security, peace, and blessedness beneath the grace of God.
And when God departs, when the angels of God depart, then those words are heard which were heard in the Temple at its destruction, when Titus came and razed Jerusalem: “Let us depart from here.” He utterly laid it waste; woe to man then.
Woe to man. And they go — the angels are recalled, the guardians of states, of cities, of families, and of individual people — when people go on sinning and there is no repentance. If we look at our nation's history — and I'm not even bringing in all the episodes from the history of the Church, or from the Old Testament, which stand out in sharp relief as signs, as types pointing to what was new — we will find many things that remind us of what I am telling you now.
Who can tell me whether Saint Dionysios the Areopagite is still with us, still there for Athens? Who can tell me whether Saint Demetrios, the protector of Thessaloniki, is still with us? Whether Saint Achillios is still in Larissa, these Saints who are the guards, the protectors of those cities — who can tell me that? Does anyone have that information? Who can tell me that the Lord has not already disregarded these intercessions, and left us exposed, so that at any moment the most terrible evil that can happen in the world may happen?
I also heard a particular detail that I would like to share with you, so that you too may know it. Listen to this detail.
At the time when Thessaloniki was about to be captured by the Hagarenes,
some devout Christians of Thessaloniki were making their way to the feast of the Saint.
They reached the Imperial Road in the Vardari district. There, with their own eyes, they saw a soldier coming out of Thessaloniki and another figure, like an Archbishop, coming along the road from Larissa. They appeared radiant. When they met, the soldier spoke first and said to the Archbishop:
«Hail, Hierarch of God, Achillios!» And the hierarch said: «And greetings to you as well, soldier of Christ, Demetrios.» When those Christians heard these names, they stood off to one side in fear, to see how it would end.
What was happening there? What were these two figures doing? The soldier again said to the Archbishop, “Why are you not coming, Archbishop of God, and where are you going?” Then Saint Achillius wept and said to him, “Because of the sins and lawlessness of the people, God has commanded me to leave Larissa, which I had been guarding, for it is to be delivered into the hands of the Hagarenes.”
“And so, behold, I have departed, and I am going wherever He commands me. And you, then, where are you going? Tell me, I beg you.” Then Saint Demetrios also wept and said to him, “I too have suffered the same fate, O hierarch. Thousands of times I helped the people of Thessalonica, delivering them from captivity, from pestilence, and from sickness. But now, because of their many sins and acts of lawlessness, God has withdrawn from them and has commanded me to leave them to be delivered into the hands of the Hagarenes. Therefore, I obeyed His command, and behold, I have departed, and I am going wherever He commands me.” After they had both said these things, they bowed their heads to the ground and wept. Then, after a long while, they kissed one another and bade each other farewell.
Immediately they vanished, and afterward what had been said became a reality. Larissa was captured by the Hagarenes, and Thessaloniki was captured by the Hagarenes.
Do you understand? When the grace of God departs, everything is finished. And today, I say, especially the advanced person, the sensitive person whose inner faculties are finely attuned—you understand me—has a very sensitive receiver. Such a person carries fear within and has a foreboding that something is going to happen.
He cannot determine what will happen or when it will happen. That he cannot say. Yet, because matters have reached this point, something will certainly happen. What, then, is best for a person in such circumstances? It is best for him to repent.
This is the one thing a person must continually keep before him. If he does not take up this weapon called metanoia—repentance—nothing else will resolve the matter of which I am speaking.
Now, concerning something I heard the day before yesterday from several brethren, this was said: “What Mr. Panagopoulos said tonight approached the matter from a secular perspective, from the standpoint of nature and human knowledge.
The Church,” they said, “has taken no position on these things. The Church remains uninvolved.” In answer to them, I would like to say that the Church does not remain uninvolved. The Church always takes part and, indeed, has special prayers and a special service concerning earthquakes.
Just as the Church has composed texts and prayers for every event, both joyful and sorrowful, reminding people how they ought to think, so she has also done for earthquakes. But the day before yesterday there was not enough time. Naturally, I was not even able to present all the material I had in mind, including what I am presenting to you tonight as a continuation, though it too could have formed part of the whole subject.
So I am taking the opportunity tonight, as a supplement to the first part, to present these prayers to you: how the Church entreats God to be merciful and avert this calamity, and also what duties she lays upon us so that we may show ourselves worthy of God’s relenting.
For the justice of God never relents unless, I repeat, there is metanoia—repentance. There are three great prayers in the Great Euchologion that are read in these difficult moments. They are prayers of confession, prayers of repentance, prayers of contrition. Permit me to read them, so that you may understand correctly what the Church says in every such circumstance.
The first prayer, appointed for the threat of an earthquake, reads as follows: “O God, great and fearsome and wondrous, the only true God”—pay attention to these words—“the only true God, who does all things”—pay attention to these words—
And He refashions them — it costs Him nothing at all. He who looks upon the earth and makes it tremble, who touches the mountains and they smoke; who shakes all that is under heaven from its foundations, so that its pillars totter; who shakes the very foundations of the earth. The earth stays where it is, but He is the One who will shake it. Yet it was set firm by Your Spirit, and all things shudder and tremble before Him, before the face
“…before the face of Your power; for though Your wrath against us sinners is irresistible, yet the mercy of Your promise is measureless and unsearchable. Remember Your compassion, O Lord, and Your mercies, for they are from everlasting. For You are…”
Uphold creation, make firm the earth, bring its shaking to an end, and establish the world that has been shaken; make it steadfast. Do not destroy us together with our lawless deeds, nor condemn us for our sins, O You who dwell in the lowest depths of the earth. In other words, it is asking God to separate us from our sins. But if we ourselves are unwilling to let go of our sins, how will God separate us from them?
our God, the God of mercy and salvation; and to You we send up glory, to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. That is the first prayer. Another prayer: O Holy King, Master who loves mankind, long-suffering Lord, Creator of all creation, both visible and intelligible, You who uphold all things by the word of Your ineffable power, You alone who have authority over life and death, who discipline us in righteousness and then, in Your love for mankind, heal us again; who govern our temporal life by Your all-wise providence and always order all things for our salvation and benefit: we know and understand that because of our many sins You have shaken the earth and caused it to tremble.
Fear and trembling have come upon us in the face of Your wrath, O long-suffering One. Our heart has been shaken along with the earth itself; the dread of death has fallen upon us as the earth moves beneath us, lest our soul be snatched away like prey in the jaws of a lion, with no one to redeem it and no one to save.
That is why we pray to you and beg you, the only Lord who is long-suffering, who bears with evil and never pays it back: do not remember our iniquities, the old ones and the recent ones alike. Do not set against the weight of our sins the recompense that is properly due. In other words, do not deal with us as we deserve.
“For if You enter into judgment with this generation of ours…”
“No one shall be justified before You,” as it says elsewhere. Yet do not utterly blot out from the earth every remembrance of us.
Remember, O Long-suffering One, Your eternal compassion, Your mercy, and Your true covenant with our fathers. “Let not the deep swallow me up, nor let the pit close its mouth over me.” Look upon us and have mercy on us, broken and humbled as we are, shaken by the fearful threat of the earthquake and seized by great trembling and fear. Yes—but unfortunately, we are neither broken nor humbled.
And where is that awareness among us? Notice the arm-twisting in the prayer: "But if there are some few among us who fear Your name and keep Your commandments — a small chosen portion, a seed of the blessed, a hidden treasure known and kept by You alone — then, since You are good, hear them too on behalf of us who are unworthy."
In other words, we confess that we are unworthy. But among all these people, are there not at least a few who love You? A few who pray, a few who do what is right and what You desire? At least listen to them. We are pressing our plea before Him.
This is what Abraham did concerning Sodom and Gomorrah. If there are fifty, will You burn them? What if there are forty? Thirty? Twenty? Ten? Five? Surely You will not burn them for the sake of even five. That is precisely the appeal being made here.
Do you see what it says? «Even if there are some among us» — if, he says, there are a few among us — «who keep your commandments, hearken to them too, for you are good» — at least listen to them, he says, on behalf of us who are unworthy — «as they ask for your kindness and your compassion; and accept the prayers they bring before you for a people that has sinned» — that is, for us sinners — «O Master who loves mankind, just as you accepted the prayer of Abraham for Sodom, and the prayers of Daniel and Jeremiah, your divine prophets, for the captivity of Israel, who prevailed upon your goodness to show mercy.»
So that from generation to generation there may be glorified that unsearchable ocean of Your love for mankind and Your long-suffering patience — an ocean whose depths no one can ever trace out.
You know, as I told you the other day, what a Turkish seismologist who came here said: “He saved you. With an earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale, there should be no city standing here today. There should be nothing left.” That is what they wrote. That is what the newspapers reported.
That is what these gentlemen—the scientists who specialize in such matters—declared. “But he saved you,” the Turkish seismologist said, pointing to Saint Demetrios. “He saved you.” Otherwise, given the intensity of the earthquake, the city should have been completely leveled.
The prayer says the same thing here: “Grant us conversion and metanoia—repentance—by Your mighty hand.”
as we are strengthened by the prayers and intercessions of Your all-pure Mother and of all the Saints who from the beginning of the ages have been well-pleasing to You. Amen. And the third prayer goes like this.
O Master, Lord Jesus Christ our God, inexhaustible fountain of compassion, unfathomable sea of love for mankind, infinite abyss of long-suffering and goodness: in every generation You bring upon the human race wounds and scourges for its benefit, out of the abundance of Your love for mankind, so that its unrestrained and headlong rush toward sin may be held back, as though by a bridle, through the fear of You.
In other words, it says that You permit these things to happen as though putting a bridle on us, to hold us back from sin. But even this does not restrain us. “Let mankind no longer rise up in rebellion against the divine image, nor wickedly destroy the soul’s nobility. We implore You: put an end to the fearful shaking of the earth and to this unnatural movement, which You have justly commanded to be stirred against us as a reminder of our unnatural impulse and inclination toward sin, and as a just expression of Your rejection of it. For if we kept Your commandments and remained within our proper bounds, we would not have gone beyond our limits.” But we have gone beyond them.
Three hundred thousand abortions—three hundred thousand murders in Athens. Is this something to laugh about? Has man gone mad? Mothers and doctors have committed murder, with premeditation and in cold blood. Living souls, already in existence, have been murdered.
At least they could have let them be born, and then taken knives and slaughtered them—let them be born, baptize them, and then slaughter them—so that at least the children might go to Paradise. Those women will go where they will go, even to Hell, but at least the children would go to Paradise.
"If, then, we were keeping Your commandments and standing within the bounds proper to us, the earth would not be obeying the command of the Almighty and moving against us." If we, he says, would just stay where Christ has placed us, then there would be no reason, he says, for the earth to do these things.
Today the earth would still be resting where He placed it. Instead, as the prayer says, it "departs from its natural stillness and comes out against us with this motion that is contrary to nature" — with this unnatural movement. Because this is not its work; this is not its nature, to do such things.
The earth was given to serve mankind, not to swallow mankind up. For this order to be reversed, so that it swallows mankind, is something contrary to nature. This is what the mind of the Church says here. “And justly so, O righteous Lord, for we do not obey the commandments of Your Kingdom.”
“And although we do not obey them, we do not fear Your righteous wrath against us.” Not only do we fail to do what You command, but we are not even afraid of our disobedience. That is our condition: we have no fear of God. “Instead, we do evil before Your eyes.”
Again and again we have hated one another, envied one another, been angry with one another. We have pushed love away, we have cast off brotherly love, we have driven mercy and almsgiving away from us, and we have loved the love of money. We have embraced the craving to own things, the love of possessions, and we have hated poverty of possessions, the freedom of wanting nothing. We have loved gluttony and the love of pleasure, but for fasting and self-control we have felt no longing at all.
And, in short, we have rejected every commandment of Yours, O Lord, and we commit every sin. For because of these things, Scripture says, “the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.” These are the wages of our wickedness—brought upon us by our own doing. This is the fitting result of our evil and unclean deeds.
These are the dreadful consequences of our hatred and pride, and of all our acts of lawlessness, committed both secretly and openly. They bring deadly blows upon us: tremors of the earth and earthquakes, plagues and assaults by enemies, and after all these, that unbearable and unending torment—that is, Hell.
But do not forsake us utterly, for the sake of Your holy name, nor let the earth swallow us alive because of our sins, lest we wretched ones be deprived of the time for metanoia and return. For many times we have promised to repent, yet many times we have lied to You, our God. How often have we said we would repent, only to fail to do so?
“We will do it. We will go to confession. We repent”—and yet we did not do it. Behold, You have already decreed that the barren fig tree be cut down. You will remove us, because we bear no fruit. You have now commanded the earth to cover us all. You have told the earth to cover us from below. But even now, O Lord who loves mankind, show us Your longsuffering—for You do not desire the death of the sinner, but that he should turn back and live.
O You who command us to forgive a brother’s sins seventy times seven, do not destroy with us this little flock of Yours, broken by fear, humbled by mourning, terrified by the shaking of the earth, and continually at a loss. But remember, O long-suffering Lord, Your compassion and mercy. Remember that the inclination of man’s heart is diligently set upon evil from his youth, and that no one is pure from defilement before You. Grant us to enjoy anew Your goodness, that we may give thanks for all the works of Your glorious and fearful power, which You have done and continue to do among us who are unworthy, according to the unfathomable sea of Your love for mankind.
By the grace of Your unoriginate Father and Your life-giving Spirit, and through the prayers and intercessions of Your most pure Mother and of all the saints. Within these three prayers there is—if only it is truly present—metanoia and confession, repentance and return, contrition and humility, acknowledgment of sin and remorse.
And when these things become deeds—when the priest or bishop reads the prayers on behalf of the people, and the people kneel and say, “Lord have mercy”—then God, my beloved, relents. But if man does not repent and change, neither does God relent.
It is what the Fathers say: akoē anti akoēs — a hearing in return for a hearing. Listen to Me, and I will listen to you. If you will not listen, I will not listen to you. Nothing has the power to alter the will of God, to change the will of God. No prayer, no intercession. Today, by our sins, we have weakened even our Panagia, the All-Holy Theotokos herself, who, as you know, pleads with God as a mother pleads. "A mother's prayer avails much before the Master." Her intercession is no longer enough to hold it back.
Not even the Saints, all of them together without exception, can tip the scales of God's justice. From now on they will all step aside, and the justice of God will take its course.
Sadly, we have found ourselves living in such days. Let us not wrong ourselves, and let us not wrong others either.
For when a person offers himself, he himself also finds fulfillment and brings healing to others. God wants people; He wants instruments upon whom He can rely. Of course, this is a human way of speaking about God.
When I say that God needs something to rely on, I mean that He needs grounds He can present before Satan, who every day lays claim to man in order to destroy him, to wipe him out, because, he says, man belongs to him. Man does Satan’s works in every way. So Satan says to Christ: “Why do You keep him from me? Does he not belong to me? Look how little he believes in You, how he blasphemes You and refuses to acknowledge You. Does he not belong to me? You are unjust not to give him to me. Why will You not give humanity to me? Does it not belong to me?” This is where the words he once spoke apply.
The devil, when he was speaking with God about the case of Job, said: «I have gone about the earth and walked up and down in it, and here I am.» In other words: I have gone all around the earth and I have trodden every part of it, so it belongs to me. And today, more than at any other time, this is the reality.
And every day he goes and demands them from Christ: “Why does He not give them to me?” The Lord, therefore, must have a counterweight to him—people who pray for them and plead on their behalf, so that He may have some whom He can point to.
He does not send angels to do this work. It will be done through human beings. Therefore, blessed is the person who, in our time, either offers himself or helps someone else draw near to God in the right way.
Whoever receives should also give to others. This is a time in which we must stand firm.
We must stand firm. And when we stand firm, others around us will stand firm as well. The world today has nothing to lean on. The world today has no light. Despite all the material, worldly, and scientific light, man remains in darkness. Even though, because of science and progress, nothing today remains hidden, nevertheless, He who is everywhere present is everywhere absent. Go into families, among intellectuals, among scientists, into offices.
Say it in government ministries—say it wherever you wish. The God who is present everywhere is treated as though He were absent everywhere. Do not dare open your mouth and speak about God. Do not dare! If they could, they would throw you out of the window.
Yet He is here in this very age. And we have this consolation: evil can never be stronger than good, and evil will never ultimately prevail. Certainly, a severe winter will come. You heard what was said there: “My land is in winter now.” A severe winter will come.
It will yield in spring. The seed remains buried for five, six, or seven months beneath the cold, beneath the frost and yards of snow. Then, in spring, when the snow melts, you look underneath and see the wheat sprouting and rising from the ground.
“Why, where were you?” “I was down here.” “And how did this happen?” “I was kept safe here, waiting for the proper season to come so that I could rise to the surface.” “Were you not lost?” “No, I was not lost.” “How can that be?” This is how the Creator has ordered things.
For your sake, my king, I teach you and remind you that, whatever may happen, the sun is not lost; it is still there behind the clouds. Today, then, as you can see, we are afraid even to make the sign of the Cross.
We're afraid to read a religious text. We're afraid to pick up a newspaper that isn't a communist one and read it. We are afraid, we will be afraid, we will be afraid. We're afraid to go to church, and so on. We are living in days of persecution, and the circle will start to close in even tighter.
That is why, in these days, a person must remain very close to Christ. And God will shake the earth; He will shake everything. For apart from us, who are being instructed directly, there are other peoples who need to see signs and wonders.
Is it easy for the Chinese, the Indians, and the others, who still worship idols and the like, to accept Christ without supernatural events and such things? Who, then, is at work within the greater plan?
As for us, we are not merely in the wake of the hurricane; we are caught in the very current of the hurricane.
The full force does not fall upon Turkey, Russia, Italy, or anywhere else. Its whole weight falls upon Orthodoxy. His aim is to wipe Orthodoxy away. He is not afraid of Catholicism; he is not afraid of its offspring, atheism; he is not afraid of Islam; he is not afraid of Communism.
It is Christ he fears—the Christ of the Orthodox. That is whom the devil fears. This is why he shakes everything. If he could, he would uproot Greece entirely, so that no trace of it remained and everything disappeared: no language, no faith, no customs, no memories, no ideals—not even its soil, if that were possible.
They would lift the whole country up and cast it into the Mediterranean. But they will not succeed. This much I can tell you for your consolation. I cannot give you strength or put strength within you, but I can show you the way. Pray to Christ for the ideals of your faith and for the ideals of our homeland.
Say to Him, “I cannot do it. I do not know how; I have no strength. But You can. And I am willing.” When a person is willing, Christ has the power. Do not deprive or hinder those who wish to come to Christ.
Warm them and care for them. Make your home and your surroundings into greenhouses where the truths of Christ, the truths of our faith, the truths of our people, and the truths of our God may flourish. And if we confess Him here, He will confess us there.
Today we are not called to face the lions that the ancient martyrs faced; we have other lions to contend with. And so, when you die, you will see there Saints and Martyrs who did not suffer martyrdom on earth in the same way as those earlier martyrs did.
For people suffer martyrdom even today. The martyr of old suffered for an hour or two, and then it was over. Here, a person suffers every day. Just say that you intend to have children and then go to work—woe to you! You will find nowhere to stand because of your colleagues, your supervisor, your neighbor, your cousin, your child’s godmother, and your mother-in-law.
Can a young woman today, a Christian woman, have as many children as God gives her? What an ordeal that is — what a martyrdom! She has to suffer a great deal to endure it, to hold on through this martyrdom. And you will see that she too is counted among the martyrs, because this too is a confession of faith.
Can a young woman today go out properly dressed, with her hair kept naturally, or a young man go out neatly groomed and modestly dressed, as people once did, without becoming a distorted imitation merely to win the applause of the world? Yes, they can.
But they will suffer. The eyes, the words, and the people around them will pierce them like skewers. And so, martyrs are being made even today; people are becoming saints even in Omonia Square in Athens. They need only be willing. This, my dear ones, is what we wished to tell you as a supplement to what we said the day before yesterday, so that within our Church we might also consider from another perspective this grave matter of our times.
Ποιος μπορεί να μου πει αν υπάρχει ακόμη ο Άγιος Διονύσιος Αρεοπαγίτης της Αθήνας; Ποιος μπορεί να μου πει αν υπάρχει ακόμη ο Άγιος Δημήτριος, ο προστάτης της Θεσσαλονίκης; Εάν υπάρχει ο Άγιος Αχίλιος στη Λάρισα, οι Άγιοι αυτοί οι οποίοι είναι οι φρουροί, οι προστάτες των πόλεων αυτών, ποιος μπορεί να μου το πει αυτό το πράγμα; Έχει κανένας την πληροφορία αυτήν; Ποιος μπορεί να μου πει αν αυτάς τας πρεσβείας δεν τας παρήκουσε ο Κύριος και μας άφησε εκτεθειμένους και, ώρα την ώρα, να γίνει το φοβερότερο κακό που μπορεί να γίνει στον κόσμο;
Σὺ γὰρ εἶ
Στήριξον την κτίσιν, στερέωσον την γην, παύσον τον κλόνον αυτής, έδρασον την δονηθείσαν οικουμένην, στερέωσέ την. Και μη συναπολέσεις ημάς ταις ανομίαις ημών, μηδέ καταδικάσεις ημάς ταις αμαρτίαις ημών, ο εν τοις κατωτάτοις της γης. Δηλαδή λέει να μας ξεχωρίσει από τις αμαρτίες μας. Αλλά εφόσον εμείς δεν θέλουμε να αφήσουμε τις αμαρτίες μας, πώς θα μας ξεχωρίσει ο Θεός;
Είναι εύκολο οι Κινέζοι, οι Ινδιοί και οι άλλοι, Οι οποίοι προσυνάντη η Ελλάδα ακόμη κλπ να δεχτούν τον Χριστό χωρίς υπερφυσικά γεγονότα και τα τοιαύτα; Ποιος, λοιπόν, ενεργεί μέσα στο γενικότερο σχέδιο;
