Summary
The lecture attributes Protestant fragmentation to Martin Luther’s principle of subjective biblical interpretation, which produced numerous competing denominations. The lecture argues that biblical references to the last days can be relative or absolute and do not establish that modern Pentecostals uniquely possess extraordinary gifts of the Holy Spirit. Listeners are urged to remain within the Orthodox Church and to test claims of prophecy and spiritual gifts against Scripture and the Church’s sacramental life.

We should note that since Luther, who was also the founder of Protestantism, advocated the subjective interpretation of Holy Scripture, it was inevitable that many different interpretations of Holy Scripture would arise—as many interpretations as there were readers of Holy Scripture. Naturally, these differing interpretations resulted in the fragmentation of the Protestants, which began even during Luther’s lifetime, in the sixteenth century. This division continued until they had split into hundreds of denominations, all of them, of course, Protestant in character.
To give you some idea, the principal and best-known among them are the Presbyterians, Anabaptists, Congregationalists, Methodists, Quakers, Unitarians, Socinians, Arminians, Millerites, Mormons, Anglicans, Adventists, Jansenists, Evangelicals of the Free Evangelical Confession, the Salvation Army, Plymouth Brethren, Irvingites, Herrnhuters, Swedenborgians, New Israelites, Syndicalists, Episcopalians, New Apostolics, Baptists, Pentecostals, Moravian Brethren, Apostolics, Open Brethren, Exclusive Brethren, and so on, and so on, and so on. Protestantism, I tell you, has undergone hundreds of divisions.
Yet these groups contradict one another, and so they have naturally arrived at the most widely divergent conclusions. They add and subtract; that is all they do. Each group adds or removes whatever it sees fit. Of all these groups, however, we are particularly concerned with the Pentecostals. We shall concentrate on the Pentecostals because, on the one hand, they have lately become very active in Greece and, on the other, because the separate Pentecostal denominations—which, I should tell you, already numbered sixty-one distinct groups by 1967, all Pentecostal but bearing various names—include several such groups here in Greece, as we shall see further on.
Because some of these Pentecostal groups are trying to approach the Orthodox Church in a covert and murky manner, for these two reasons we shall devote today’s subject specifically to the Pentecostals. In fact, I have in my files a copy of the newspaper Macedonia dated April 29, containing two advertisements. One reads, “First Church of Pentecost.” There, immediately, is one named group. The second reads, “Church of Christ of Pentecost.” Indeed, I shall read one of these advertisements to you.
“At eleven in the morning, at the Church of Christ of Pentecost, 5 Kamvounion Street, Courthouse Square, Mr. Kyriakos Sidiropoulos, a preacher and scholar, will preach from the Gospel; and at seven in the evening, the church program, ‘The Words of Moses,’ followed by another talk by the same speaker. At the end of the worship service, prayer will be offered for the sick and for you who have problems. Admission is free to all.” The other small advertisement from the Church of Pentecost is much the same. As you can see, these people are tireless and continually publish their announcements...
...and unsuspecting people go to hear them, thinking that these people may have something good to say. This gives us one more reason to dwell more particularly on the error of these Pentecostals.
As we mentioned last time and in my introduction, the Pentecostals are a Protestant group. They have taken their name from the event of Pentecost, that day on which the Apostles received the Holy Spirit in the form of tongues of fire. The founder of the Pentecostal group was the American Ambrose Tomlinson. In 1907 he established his first church in Cleveland, Ohio. The Pentecostals appeared in Greece in 1927 under the name “Church of God of Pentecost.” A second Pentecostal group was then founded under the name “Apostolic Church of Pentecost,” established in 1938. A third Pentecostal church was founded in Greece in 1967 under the name “Free Apostolic Church of Pentecost.” More recently, another group has appeared, though I do not know whether there are more than four. Once I mention this latest one, there may well be ten others, my dear friends, of which I know nothing, because new ones spring up continually. They have the ability to multiply like cells, which divide and become more numerous. Through division, we might say, they increase. This goes on continually, and we cannot keep track...
...of the actual number of all these groups. Even the official bulletins I consulted say, “These are the figures we have up to this moment.” A short while later, no one knows, because this constant subdivision continues. A fourth group, then, which appeared in our city some years ago, is the COF—the Christian Organization of Peace. This latest group, as I told you, became active here in our city of Larissa. Its apparent founder—I cannot tell you whether he truly is its founder, but at least he appears to be the founder of the COF—is a certain Stylianos Genetakis in Athens. In Thessaloniki, his son-in-law, Nikolaos...
Moutsakis, is active in the Upper City of Thessaloniki. Today in Greece they have twenty branches, according to their own testimony, one of which is the Larissa branch. What is the teaching of the Pentecostals in general, and of the COF in particular? Pay attention: of the Pentecostals in general, and of the COF in particular. Fundamentally, their teaching is Protestant, since that is where the Pentecostals come from. They do, however, have certain distinctive characteristics. Indeed, a small publication of the Apostoliki Diakonia directed against the Pentecostals says that the Pentecostals, together with several other groups...
...are regarded as heretics by the Protestants themselves. If, then, the Protestants consider them heretics, how much more heretical must this Pentecostal movement be to us, who also regard the Protestants as heretics? Their name, Pentecostals, as I told you, comes from the event of Pentecost, from which they also derive the central element of their teaching. The Pentecostals claim that they are baptized anew in the fire of Pentecost, exactly as the Apostles were then, with the same results: the phenomenon of speaking in tongues, the gift of prophecy, ecstasy, visions, and dreams. On these things they base their claim that they are baptized anew in the fire of Pentecost.
Of course, anyone can say whatever he wishes. The question is not how you personally feel it, but what is actually true. For the event of Pentecost in the age of the Apostles was not subjective. It was objective—an outward, verifiable event. And it was objective in two respects. First, for those who were inside the upper room, it appeared in the form of tongues of fire. It was something they could all see. Fire appeared in the air inside the upper room, divided, and rested upon the heads of those present. This, I repeat, was not a subjective phenomenon. It was objective. But it was also objective in its wider dimension, so that no one could say...
...that it was a phenomenon caused by suggestion, for someone might have made that claim as well. At the same time, outside the house whose upper room held the disciples, a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind—though no wind was blowing—made the entire city wonder, “What is happening? What is happening?” They traced this sound to a house in the city. Then the Apostles came out and spoke, followed by the well-known events of Pentecost. Therefore, the event of Pentecost was objectively manifest in both these dimensions: to those inside the house and to those outside it. I repeat, it cannot be regarded as a subjective event.
Yet nothing informs or assures us that when they claim to be baptized anew in the fire of Pentecost, this is truly happening. I too could say at this very moment that I am being baptized anew in the fire of Pentecost, without being able to prove it. If you say, “But what about the results?” we shall examine that later. In any case, this teaching of theirs is based on a prophecy of Joel, which the Apostle Peter used in his first address on the day of Pentecost. The Apostle said: “But this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.’”
“‘Your young men shall see visions, and your elders shall dream dreams. And even upon My servants and My handmaidens in those days I will pour out of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” Because this prophecy is so very important, allow me to render it for you very quickly and freely. This is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: “And in the last days, says God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon every human being.”
“Your sons—your children, your boys—and your daughters shall prophesy; your young men shall see visions, and your elders shall see dreams. And upon My servants and My handmaidens, in those last days, I will pour out of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in heaven and signs upon the earth—in heaven above and on the earth below—blood and fire and smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon shall grow dark like blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes. And then whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
My dear friends, this is the prophecy. But I would like us to analyze it, because, since they base their claims upon it, we must see whether or not they are right. First of all, the Pentecostals say that this prophecy is being fulfilled in our own days. From what, I ask, do you conclude that it is being fulfilled in our days? From the fact that it speaks of the last days. “In the last days,” it says; “and it shall come to pass in the last days,” and so forth. Therefore, they say, these are the last days. But who tells you that the days through which we are now passing are the last days? At any time we could say that they are the last days. Indeed, my dear friends, the period can be called the last days from the moment the prophecy is proclaimed...
...and from the moment its first fulfillment is brought forth.
From that moment onward, we speak of the Last Things (eschata). Let me give you an example. John the Evangelist says, “You have heard that the Antichrist is coming, and even now,” he says, “there are many antichrists.” How can the Antichrist be coming while many antichrists already exist? It means that the Last Things (eschata)—since the Antichrist will come at the end—had already begun when John wrote his prophecy. The Apostle Paul writes to Timothy: “Know this and do not forget it: in the last times people will be such and such and such.” When do these last times begin? From the moment the Apostle Paul writes his epistle to Timothy. Therefore, the expression “last” has both an absolute meaning and a relative one. Its meaning is absolute when we truly find ourselves at the very end.
Its meaning is relative because we are continually drawing nearer to the end. As one approaches the end, the distance remaining always grows shorter, and this is always described as “the last time.” We could know that we had reached the last days in the absolute sense if we truly knew when Christ would come. Do we know? No. Since, then, we do not know when Christ will come, we cannot speak of the last days in an absolute sense, but only in a relative one. That is the first point. But who told you, gentlemen, that the last days of which the prophet speaks are precisely those referring to our own time? For the prophecy says—and the prophecy is unshakable—that in the last days, “I will pour out of My Spirit upon mankind.” Consequently, they say, “We today are Spirit-bearing people, and we are moved by the Holy Spirit in an extraordinary manner.”
Let us not forget that, of course, the Holy Spirit is present in the Church; there is no question about that. The Holy Spirit is the One who brings everything to fulfillment—all the Mysteries and our salvation within the Church. Without the Holy Spirit, my dear friends, we can do nothing. But they understand this in an extraordinary sense: that we shall possess extraordinary gifts which make an exceptional impression. They claim that the time has now come for these extraordinary gifts, just as on the day of Pentecost, and that they—the Pentecostals alone—are the natural recipients of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Upon what do you base this, gentlemen? Upon the last days. And who told you that we are now in the last days? But beyond this, let us see what the prophet means here when he says “the last days.” When, I ask...
When the Apostle Peter uses this prophecy, he wants to make it clear that the phenomenon his contemporaries were witnessing was not the result of new wine, but the work of the Holy Spirit. When the Apostles came out to speak, the Apostle Peter may not originally have intended to mention the prophecy of the Prophet Joel. But he noticed that some Jews were mocking them and saying that these men were “full of new wine”—that they had begun drinking first thing in the morning and had become drunk. Then the Apostle Peter answered in their defense: “My dear friends, it is nine o’clock in the morning, and we are not drunk.
“Is this even the hour when people become drunk, so early in the morning? I will explain why you are seeing this phenomenon. The Prophet Joel says that in the last days, God declares, ‘I will pour out of My Spirit,’” and so forth. Thus, when the Apostle Peter interprets the prophecy of the Prophet Joel, by “the last days” he does not mean the final days, when Christ will come again, nor does he mean our own days. He means the days of Pentecost, because he wishes to explain the event of Pentecost and to show the fulfillment of the prophecy of the Prophet Joel. Therefore, when the Prophet speaks here of “the last days,” he means nothing other than the day of Pentecost.
Those were the days he meant. Moreover, in the Old Testament, whenever the Last Things are mentioned, they are always understood in relation to the prophets. The prophets speak of “the last time.” And what is that last time? It is always the days of the Messiah—that is, the first coming of Christ. When the New Testament speaks of the Last Things, however, the Last Things in the New Testament refer to the Second Coming of Christ. Please remember this. Furthermore, if we consult the Hebrew text, as well as the Septuagint—in Joel, chapter three, verses one through five—we find that they do not contain the phrase “in the last days.” Instead, they say, “And it shall come to pass afterward.”
They do not say, “in the last days.” What does “afterward” mean? We need only turn to the preceding chapters of the Prophet and see what is written there. The Prophet speaks of the devastation of Palestine by drought and locusts, a punishment that God brings upon the people because of their apostasy. Then the Prophet says that “afterward”—that is, God will first send this punishment, and afterward, after that punishment, the things described in the prophecy will come to pass. So, my dear friends, when we study the prophets of the Old Testament, we encounter something of the greatest importance.
Pay close attention to this. Within a single vision, the Prophet brings together different periods of history, crossing enormous spans of time. He begins in his own day, at the very moment when he is writing the prophecy. Then he makes a leap and says, “God will destroy Palestine.” That has not yet happened. After this destruction will come the age of the Messiah—the “afterward”—when God will richly bestow His Holy Spirit. From there the Prophet makes another leap and passes to the Second Coming of Christ. And what does he say? “Then the sun will be darkened, and the moon,” and so forth.
Thus, he makes these three great leaps. But there is something else as well. Since the Apostle Peter quotes the Prophet as an explanation, showing that the gift of the Holy Spirit received at Pentecost was the fulfillment of the prophecy, one of his listeners might have said: “What you say is all very well, but the prophecy says something else too. It says that the sun and the moon will be darkened and that a dreadful calamity will fall upon the earth. Where are these things? Where are they?” Quite simply, my dear friends, the prophecy...
...was only half fulfilled in the days of the Apostles. Half of the prophecy was fulfilled, while the other half still remained. The Apostle Peter does not state this explicitly in his address, but it becomes clear from reading the passage. It is quite plain that the whole prophecy was not fulfilled. We therefore see two periods here: the two comings of Christ. At Christ’s first coming, we have the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This is Pentecost. At the Second Coming of Christ, there is no outpouring of the Holy Spirit. What is there instead? Calamities upon the earth. Therefore, if we understand...
...the last days through which we are now passing—and which, of course, come after Pentecost—according to the Prophet Joel, according to the Apostle Peter’s interpretation, and according to the events of Pentecost as the fulfillment of the prophecy, then we should not now be expecting an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, but calamities. It is perfectly clear. From this, one can see the confusion of these people, my dear friends—their great confusion. Since they claim to be baptized anew in the Holy Spirit in the same extraordinary manner as on the day of Pentecost, they are in error. We can say that whatever they present, it is certainly not the fruit of the Holy Spirit. What is it?
I do not know. I know only that it is not the fruit of the Holy Spirit, as you will see in what follows. But I must dwell on this a little longer. Concerning the last days, our Lord warns us that there will not be another Pentecost. Pay attention to what Christ said: “Do not depart from Jerusalem, for not many days from now”—not after many days—“you will receive power from on high.” And do you know how many those “not many days” were? Only ten: from the day of the Ascension until the day of Pentecost. “You will receive power from on high,” and then we have the event of Pentecost. By contrast, at the Second Coming of Christ, we have different events.
This is according to Christ’s own testimony and agrees exactly with the second part of the Prophet Joel’s prophecy. In the first part of his prophecy, Joel speaks of the Holy Spirit. In the second part, he speaks of the great destruction upon the earth. So what does Christ say? That before the Last Things, false prophets and false messiahs will arise. Christ’s disciples asked Him: “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your Second Coming and of the end of the age?” Of Your Second Coming and of the end of the age—that is, of the Last Things, the actual consummation of the age. Listen to Christ’s answer.
“And Jesus answered and said to them”—Matthew 24:3–11—“Take heed that no one deceives you.” Be careful, He says, that no one leads you astray. “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. And many false prophets will arise and deceive many.” Many false prophets. Therefore, if these people claim to possess the spirit of prophecy, then in reality, according to our Lord’s warning, they are false prophets. Did you hear that? Christ does not say that the Holy Spirit will be poured out abundantly in the last days. He says that false prophets will come, gentlemen of the Pentecostal movement. The Lord also tells us that lawlessness will increase and, as a result, the love of the faithful will grow cold. Matthew 24:12.
“And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” The Lord also tells us that in the last days faith will be confined to a small number of believers; and according to the Apostle Paul, this will be the remnant that is saved. He says in Luke 18:8: “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” Will He find faith upon the earth? So we ask: if false prophets are abroad in the last days, according to the word of the Lord—and false prophets are abroad in our time as never before—if love has grown cold, and if faith...
...has diminished, how can we speak of extraordinary gifts of the Holy Spirit? What does all this mean? As we approach the Last Things, we encounter dreadful signs instead. And what are these dreadful signs? As the Prophet Joel says, fire and vapor of smoke, and so forth—that is, terribly murderous wars upon the earth and frightening natural phenomena in the heavens, such as the darkening of the moon and the sun. Christ said concerning the Last Things, in Luke 17:22: “The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.” You will long to see one of My glorious days, and you will not see it. “And they will say to you...” In other words, there will be a time when nothing seems to be happening, and people will cry, “My God, where are You?” Did you hear what Christ said? You will long to see one of My glorious days, and you will not see it. Then the devil will find his opportunity. Just as the devil went to tempt Christ in the wilderness when Christ was hungry, so it will be when people no longer perceive Christ’s presence. Indeed, the Pentecostals say that our Church is finished. We shall speak of that shortly. They say that our Church is done for, that our Church has gone bankrupt. It is precisely such circumstances that the devil exploits. And listen to what Christ says: “And they will say to you...” When will they say this to you? When...
...you no longer see anything living in your spiritual life, then they will speak to you. Who will? “Look here! Look there! Do not go after them or follow them.” “Here is Christ! There is Christ! Here is the Holy Spirit! There is the Holy Spirit!” Do not go. Do not pursue them. Do not be found among them. Christ Himself warns us. Did you hear? He makes you secure, as Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says. He makes you secure. Please pay very close attention. The conclusion is that everything the Pentecostals appeal to is utter error. Moreover, my dear friends, if we take even a brief look at their supposed prophecies and their eschatology, we will recognize their error from far away. For if what they prophesy and promise were true, then what they say would also accord with Holy Scripture. But what do they say about the Last Things? What do they say? Listen.
You understood what Christ said. You heard Him: dreadful wars, grievous conditions, and so forth. You all know these things, so there is no need to repeat them now. I believe that after so many years of hearing the Word of God, you know our Christian eschatology. Now listen to what the Millennialists—pardon me, the Pentecostals—say. Jesus Christ will come to earth a second time to establish His thousand-year kingdom. You may say, “But that is what the Millennialists teach.” My dear friends, pay attention. The Millennialists, as I told you, began as a Protestant heresy arising from the Methodists and ended up becoming what they are today—God preserve us from anything worse. The Pentecostals also uphold a millennialist view.
They too hold a millennialist understanding of the Last Things: namely, that Christ will come and reign upon the earth for a thousand years. Did you hear that? And when will Christ come? If you wish, open the Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics to the entry “Pentecostals,” and you will find all of this clearly stated there. I have drawn from that source, as well as from the statements of the Christian Organization of Peace itself. These are documented facts. We are not putting these claims into their mouths; they say them themselves. So we ask: when will Christ come? They answer: He will come in the year 2000 after Christ, even though Christ clearly tells us that no one knows when He will come.
Could anything be clearer than the statement that no one knows? Yet the Millennialists claim to know, and now the Pentecostals also claim to know, that Christ will come in the year 2000. But what will happen until then? Until then, the members of the Christian Organization of Peace—that is, the Pentecostals—will survive by receiving incorruption. In other words, they will not undergo corruption; they will not die, but will reign with Christ for a thousand years. Hence their claim that only those who enroll in the Christian Organization of Peace will be saved. In the encyclopedia, you will see that one of their errors is the belief that only their own church is true and that no other church is.
Therefore, just as the Millennialists say about themselves, only the members of the Christian Organization of Peace will be saved, and they will reach the number 144,000 mentioned in the Apocalypse. But here I would simply ask: if the Millennialists claim the 144,000 for themselves, and the Pentecostals claim them too, I cannot tell you who will win the lottery. My dear friends, this is not about a literal number of 144,000. First of all, the Apocalypse mentions this number twice, in two different instances. It is a symbolic number: twelve multiplied by twelve thousand.
It signifies a very great multitude. Indeed, immediately after giving the number, the Evangelist says that he saw such a vast multitude that no one could number it. No one could count the multitude. How is this possible, holy Prophet? On the one hand, you tell us there are exactly 144,000—a precise, countable number—and on the other, you tell us that it is an innumerable multitude that no one can count. Quite simply, it is a symbolic number. In the same way, Christ told the parable of the hundred sheep. A certain man, He says, had a hundred sheep. Who is this man? It is Jesus Christ, who has the hundred sheep. One was lost, and He went out to find it. If we applied the same reasoning here, my dear friends, we would have to say that Christ came to save only one hundred people.
He came to save one hundred people simply because He told us in the parable that He had one hundred sheep. Does that make sense? From this, you can understand how misguided their interpretations of Scripture are. But they also teach that Christ’s kingdom will be earthly and will be established in the Eastern Hemisphere, because the Antichrist will be in the Western Hemisphere. Some war will take place, they will eventually make peace, and then they will say, “Why should we quarrel? You remain over there, and we shall remain over here.” Thus, Christ will reign in the Eastern Hemisphere, while in the Western Hemisphere—including Germany—there will be the...
the Antichrist. The Pentecostals and their followers will leave and go to the Eastern Hemisphere, while those who have not believed will go to the Western Hemisphere, and there will be a kind of mere coexistence on earth. You will tell me these are myths. You will tell me they are laughable. But when they lead believers astray, my dear friends, they are not a laughing matter; they are cause for many tears. As you know, the Apocalypse tells us that before Christ’s Second Coming, the two prophets will come—chapter 11, verse 10. And we know from the Fathers of our Church that these two prophets are the Prophet Elijah and Enoch. Saint John of Damascus also tells us this in his Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith. But according to these Pentecostals, who will these two prophets be
who will come, as they claim, to announce the Antichrist before the year 2000, after which Christ will come and they will reign with Christ? Listen—just listen. The two prophets are Genetakis in Athens and Moutsakis in Thessaloniki. Then there is the further question of what happens with other Protestant groups and other Pentecostal groups, since each group may put forward its own founders as the future prophets who will announce the Antichrist. This, my dear friends, is their eschatology. If this is their eschatology, as they proclaim it, then it does not agree with Holy Scripture. And since it does not agree with Holy Scripture, they are false prophets, concerning whom our Lord told us to be on our guard, to protect ourselves, and to shut our doors against them.
Am I being perfectly clear and understandable? What else do they teach? They accept the idea of an ongoing, developing Pentecost. This, of course, is nothing new. It is an ancient error that the Church condemned. What does it mean to accept an ongoing Pentecost? They say that the Apostles must have had—since Pentecost is still developing... Pay attention to the word developing. They mean that the presence of the Holy Spirit begins on the day of Pentecost, and that revelation continues to develop throughout history. Therefore, since revelation is developing, with every new day added to history we possess a greater revelation than we had yesterday or the day before. Consequently, the Apostles
must have had less of the Holy Spirit than the members of the Christian Organization of Peace have today. And unfortunately, to my great astonishment, I have heard this with my own ears. They maintain that we understand what the Apostles wrote better than the Apostles themselves did. You understand better than the Apostle Peter and the Apostle Paul? You understand better? They answer, “Yes, we understand better.” Do I even need to tell you that this is a terrible delusion and terrible pride? But let us see what they base this on and what it means. It means that the Apostles understood Holy Scripture less fully than they do. For when we ask them, “How do you know that Christ will come in the year 2000?” you will see how they justify their claim. “How do you know that Christ will come in the year 2000, when Holy Scripture does not tell us so?”
They answer, “That is correct. Holy Scripture does not tell us, because it was not revealed to the Apostles. But it has been revealed today.” And this, they say, is because Pentecost is still developing. But what do they base this on? Listen to their basis. John 14:25–26: “But the Comforter,” as Christ said shortly before His Passion, “the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” This Comforter will teach you everything. And then there is John 16:12–13: “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” I have many things to tell you, but you cannot bear them. “But when He comes, the Comforter, the Spirit of truth, He will guide you into all truth.” Then He will guide you into the fullness of truth. And so they say, “There you have it.”
The disciples did not receive the fullness of truth. Yes, but Christ said those words in relation to that particular moment. They would receive the fullness of truth on the day of Pentecost. And because this issue, my dear friends, is not new, as I told you, the Church confronted it and condemned it. Saint Gregory Palamas answers it as follows. After citing these passages, he also cites a third, but for the sake of brevity I will not read all the passages he mentions. I will give you his conclusion: “Now, therefore, the promise has been fulfilled, and the Holy Spirit has descended, sent and given by the Father and the Son. He shone upon the holy disciples, kindled them all divinely like lamps—or rather, revealed them as lights beyond this world, lights for the whole world—”
“holding forth the word of eternal life, and through them He enlightened the whole inhabited earth.” Saint Gregory says, “Now, therefore, the promise has been fulfilled.” Now the promise has come to pass. Which promise? The promise that He would send them the Comforter to teach them all truth. When was it fulfilled? On the day of Pentecost. Therefore, my dear friends, there is no such thing as an ongoing, developing Pentecost. Everything that was to be handed down was handed down then: the fullness of truth. For this reason, we must be exceedingly careful—exceedingly careful. Our task is to understand what has been handed down, not to seek something that was never handed down. The Apostles knew the fullness of truth. Whatever God willed to reveal, He revealed once and for all to the Apostles on the day of Pentecost.
Consider, for example, the Apostle Paul or the Protomartyr Stephen, who came after Pentecost, or indeed all the Saints who would ever live from Pentecost until the end of the world. They possess the fullness of truth, because, as I have told you, truth is not continually developing; it has been handed down. These people who attain theosis simply reach the same state attained by those who then received the descent of the Holy Spirit—the Apostles. The Pentecostals also accept only Holy Scripture, as Protestants generally do, and reject Holy Tradition. This is common to all Protestant groups.
Moreover, all Protestant groups prefer the translation of the Bible Society that we have here, just as you know which translation the Millennialists prefer. They claim that the familiar Orthodox interpretations in circulation—those of Trembelas, Kolitsaras, and others—are merely the personal opinions of the interpreters and are therefore unreliable. Yet it is well known—very well known—that if you take, for example, the commentaries of Trembelas, you will see that his commentary is based on the interpretation of the Church, the interpretation of the Fathers. They also believe in absolute predestination. In other words, if it is written that you will be saved, you will be saved. If it is not written that you will be saved, you will not be saved. This, my dear friends, is called absolute predestination. And as is well known, under absolute predestination there is faith alone, without works.
Exactly so. And the whole matter of ascesis, of ascetic discipline, which the Church sets before us, is incomprehensible to them. What does it mean to fast? What does it mean to exercise self-restraint? What does spiritual ascesis mean at all? They recognize only four Mysteries, and even these only in a qualified sense, since they have no Holy Orders. So they recognize them in a very limited way. These are the Mystery of Baptism, the Holy Eucharist, Holy Matrimony, and Holy Unction. For this reason, you will very often see Pentecostals asking for Holy Unction to be served. Pentecostals hold many services of Holy Unction. This too is one sign that they really are Pentecostals. Of course, I do not mean that if you see someone having Holy Unction served in his home, he must be a Pentecostal. God forbid. I simply want to add that they have a particular preference for the Mystery of Holy Unction.
As they say, it enables them to have contact with the Holy Spirit. You may ask, how do they have Holy Unction served? They call a priest from the parish. But we shall look at this a little later. They also accept the theory of evolution. They maintain that man is descended from animals and that before Adam there were human beings with narrow brains who were incapable of thought. Thought, they say, began with Adam. They believe that the resurrection of the dead will be brought about through science. They also believe that everything can be healed through prayer. For this reason, through the laying on of hands, they cultivate what they call the gift of healing. This is something to which they give particular attention. They seek to impart it—and for this reason they are also called charismatics—to impart...
They place their hands on a sick person and, just like that, expect him to become well. You will ask, do people actually get well? Certainly, apart from the fact that there is often fraud involved, there is also, in general, the power of autosuggestion. Add to that the work of the devil, and then draw your conclusions. For if we bear in mind that the devil will perform miracles, what is so astonishing about this? What is so astonishing, especially when they engage in speaking in tongues and utter inarticulate sounds that no one understands, and then supposedly interpret the sounds themselves? What assurance do I have that you are uttering words supposedly inspired by God and claiming to repeat the event of Pentecost? The event of Pentecost is unrepeatable in history. Among all
the Saints of our Church, the event of Pentecost has never been repeated. I assure you, it happened once. It did not happen even among the Apostolic Fathers. It happened only to the Apostles and to those who were with them in the upper room at that time. Speaking in tongues did not occur even among the Apostolic Fathers. It was an entirely extraordinary phenomenon, a unique event. Moreover, this speaking in tongues was not inarticulate. The Book of Acts tells us clearly that when the Apostles went out to speak, their hearers each heard the preaching of the Gospel in his own language. But here we have inarticulate sounds. There is nothing anyone can verify and identify as a genuine foreign language—a foreign language that can also be verified as one the speaker does not know. And bear in mind, my dear friends, that this phenomenon also occurs in spiritualism. It is well known...
that people under hypnosis and mediums can speak foreign languages—real foreign languages—and can write in foreign languages, Chinese for example, even though the medium does not know Chinese. When the person comes out of the hypnotic state, he may be completely unaware of what he said and wrote. And yet what he said and wrote may be genuine and may convey astonishing information. Therefore, be exceedingly careful, because we must never forget that beside what is genuine stands the devil, the counterfeiter. We must never forget, I repeat, that beside what is genuine stands the devil, the counterfeiter.
They also claim that their own church is the one true church. Everything outside Pentecostalism is false. Only what they say has authority. And concerning the Orthodox Church, they say the following, as does the International Roman Catholic Church—though of course I am not speaking about that at the moment; I am speaking about the International Orthodox Church. They maintain that our Church is Babylon, the great harlot—our Church! And if you reasonably ask why, then, the Pentecostals attend our churches, receive Holy Communion, and cultivate relationships with Orthodox clergy, you will find the answer given by Mr. Sakos, professor of theology in Thessaloniki: that the International Christian Organization of Peace, specifically that organization, is the
Trojan horse of Protestantism, just as Uniatism is the Trojan horse of Roman Catholicism. They simply employ the method of concealment so that they can win people over and accomplish their purpose. Once they have gained strength, they will turn against us, just as the Protestants who came to Greece after 1821 did, as I told you last time. At first they appeared as philhellenes, philanthropists, and benefactors of society; they opened schools, and so forth. Later, they revealed their poison. One matter that especially deserves attention, my dear friends, because it shows how they seek to win over the Church, is that an Orthodox archimandrite named
Eusebius Papastephanou is currently active in America. He leads a Pentecostal sect called “The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit,” and he even publishes an English-language magazine. Papastephanou may possibly have ties, as is rumored, to the Christian Organization of Peace in Greece and to other Pentecostal circles in Greece, since he visits Greece from time to time. This is what is rumored. Indeed, our Church does not regard this man favorably, and here I have a newspaper clipping with the headline “Extraordinary Convocation of the Hierarchy.” It says that the Hierarchy will investigate and examine the following matters. This is from January 1979.
One of them is the activity here of a clergyman of the Archdiocese of America, Archimandrite Eusebius Papastephanou, who is accused of presenting himself as an exorcist and healer. But he himself does not deny this, as I shall show you from his own magazine. I mention him only because it has been said and rumored—I repeat, rumored—that he may have ties to the Christian Organization of Peace in Greece.
He is also associated with the Christian Organization of Peace in Larissa. I have the magazine here. This is it. Its title is The Logos, that is, The Word (Logos). As you can see, there is a photograph on the front cover. It shows an Orthodox church—certainly an Orthodox one, not just any... It is an Orthodox church, and there are believers inside. There he carries out...
the things this man does. They kneel and raise their hands high. These are the distinctive prayers they offer, and they hold what we might call a gathering inside the church itself, which is in Cleveland, Ohio. There, Orthodox Christians who have been led astray by him gather to pray. He presents himself as Orthodox at every moment, yet he is, in fact, a Pentecostal. Here is a leading article from the beginning of the magazine, from which I will quote a few selections. A complete translation has been made, but we do not have time—the hour is late—for me to read the whole article to you. I will select only a few passages. It says that he was invited to two Pentecostal conferences, at which he was also a speaker. “They gave me a welcome opportunity to assess firsthand the extent to which the Holy Spirit has been poured out”
upon the human race in these last days. But this would require an explanation: the “last days” are not these present days, but those days—the days of Pentecost. “Certainly, no church has remained outside the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.” Who says, sir, that the Holy Spirit also works among heretics? For if no church has remained without receiving the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, that means wherever I go, I will find the Holy Spirit. But that is also what the ecumenists say. And consequently, I simply remain where I am, whether I am Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Protestant, or anything else, since the Holy Spirit is supposedly present everywhere.
Why, then, should I speak of heresies? Why should I leave here and go there? Why? We automatically have—pay attention—the stripping away of the very designation of heresy. Heresies cease to be called heresies, because the Holy Spirit supposedly works everywhere. Another point: “More than two hundred healings.” A conference had been held in Jerusalem, attended by four thousand people. “More than two hundred healings were recorded during the healing appeals led by Kathryn Kuhlman on one day and by Pat Robertson on another.” You see? More than two hundred healings. He also writes: “Theological dialogue is useless.” What does that mean? Why should we sit and argue about dogmas and theological dialogue? Things are very simple. It is the formula proposed between Constantinople and Rome: that we should begin a dialogue of love, not a dialogue about dogma. But can we speak of love without first clarifying the true faith?
Is that right? Is it right? Where are we going? Where do we stand? He continues: “The only regrettable thing about the Jerusalem conference was that the Orthodox Church was the only Church not represented by local senior clergy in Jerusalem. Although the Patriarch of Jerusalem was invited, he did not respond.” That was the only regrettable thing: the Orthodox did not attend the Pentecostal conference in Jerusalem. Thank God they did not go. Thank God. There he met someone named Kostas Beir—the first name is Greek, of course; I do not know how he acquired the rest—a local Greek from Jerusalem, who declared during a forceful message at the Hague conference: “I was Greek Orthodox for so many years.”
“No one ever told me that Jesus Christ died for my sins.” Papastefanou even uses this as the title of his article. “I want to ask this gathering of Pentecostals to pray for the Greek Orthodox Church.” The Pentecostals are to pray for our own Church! Papastefanou then writes: “As a teenager, Kostas Beir used to throw stones at the Pentecostals”—the matter is perfectly clear—“at the Pentecostals who came to Jerusalem to preach the Gospel. Today he has an evangelistic and healing ministry that takes him to many countries throughout the world.” In other words, he became a Pentecostal. The center of his activity in the United States is Lima, New York, and so forth. Every Orthodox Christian could only feel embarrassed by the observation that was made.
“There is something terribly wrong with what we call Orthodoxy. There is something terribly wrong with what we call Orthodoxy.” And again: “Jesus Christ does not come to people through the way the Orthodox Church functions today.” In other words, Christ does not reach people today through the way our Church works and functions. There is much more, but of course the hour is late, and I do not wish to tire you any further. What, my dear friends, is the conclusion? The conclusion is that this man serves in Orthodox churches and presents himself as Orthodox. He was once Orthodox, and he still presents himself as Orthodox, yet he has direct ties with the Pentecostals. He is the man who is trying to win the Church over to the Pentecostal cause. It is a dreadful thing, a dreadful thing. People who have lived in America have told me about it.
They have told me about his activities there, and about what this man does here in Greece as well. More specifically, in Father Theokletos’s Athonite Flowers, there are two articles written against Makrakis, and in them he speaks chiefly about Papastefanou. These were written shortly before 1960. Then two people from America intervened—two of them, mind you—and furiously abused Father Theokletos because he had dared to criticize Makrakis, who was already dead, and Eusebius Papastefanou. Eusebius Papastefanou. One of the two writes: “You dare to insult...” and so forth, “the man who approaches Protestants in order to help them and bring them to Orthodoxy.”
It is now well known—indeed, perfectly obvious, since so many years have passed—that it was he who was led astray by the Protestants. Father Theokletos had specifically warned him: “I would earnestly ask Father Eusebius to beware of the Protestant circles surrounding him.” This was written before he openly broke away. And so we see, my dear friends, that this man works on behalf of the Protestants, and more particularly on behalf of the Pentecostals. I say this in answer to the following question: how can these people try to win over our Church when they insult her? Yes, it is possible, and we can see it clearly when we see them receiving Holy Communion, praying, approaching priests, and going to Holy Confession, solely to create the impression that we are all one and the same.
In reality, they are torpedoes aimed at the foundations of our Church. This, my dear friends, is what I wanted to tell you about the Pentecostals, and especially about the Christian Organization of Peace, which is indeed a Pentecostal heresy, as its teachings demonstrate. Pentecostalism, my dear friends, has a distant ancestor: Montanism. Montanus did the very same thing in the second century. He had been a priest of Cybele from Phrygia. When he accepted Christianity, he confused everything. He imagined that anyone who receives the Holy Spirit continually has Pentecost alive within him. He displayed the same phenomena: a supposed gift of prophecy, ecstasies, dreams, and visions.
Prophets and prophetesses followed him. His heresy spread very rapidly throughout the entire world then known, from Asia Minor to Gibraltar, North Africa, and elsewhere. His heresy spread quickly, but afterward it also fell apart, because the Church condemned Montanism. Tertullian was among the Montanists. I mention this simply for your information. Thus, the Pentecostals have their distant ancestor in Montanism. Our Church, then, condemned Montanism and also condemned Protestantism, as I told you last time. Consequently, whether considered from the side of Montanism or from the side of Protestantism...
the conclusion is simple: the Pentecostals stand condemned by the Church.
All that remains for us is what the Apostle and Evangelist John tells us in his Second Epistle: “Many deceivers have entered into the world.” Someone might ask what importance the presence of deceivers could possibly have. What importance could it have if all these teachings were good? It is of the greatest importance that you be an Orthodox Christian. Do you hear me, please? Do not say, even for a moment, “They all say good things.” Never say that. If that were so, the Word of God would not speak about deception and deceivers. “Many deceivers, therefore, have entered into the world. Watch yourselves”—be careful, the Evangelist John notes and exhorts us—
“that we may not lose what we have worked for, but may receive a full reward.” We must not lose what we have labored for—and this means that we can lose it through heresy—but must receive our full reward. “Everyone who transgresses and does not remain in the teaching of Christ”—that is, in the Orthodox faith—“does not have God.” You should know that, according to Holy Scripture, atheism is not merely what we usually imagine it to be. We tend to call only the person who accepts nothing at all an atheist. But according to Holy Scripture, an atheist is someone who does not fully accept what Christ teaches. The Evangelist states it clearly here: “He who does not remain in the teaching of Christ”—that is, in the Gospel—“does not have God. He who remains in the teaching of Christ has both the Father and the Son.” “If anyone comes to you...”
He comes to you “and does not bring this teaching”—does not bring the Orthodox teaching of the Gospel—“do not receive him into your house,” do not let him into your home, “and do not even greet him.” Do not even say good morning to him. Someone may object, “But it is only a good morning; a good morning belongs to God.” Are you holier than Saint John the Evangelist? Are you a greater theologian than Saint John the Evangelist? Do you possess more love than Saint John the Evangelist, the disciple of love? I do not think so. Therefore, what you are doing is disobedience, and you will pay dearly for that disobedience by being led astray. So, you must not receive a heretic into your home, and you must not greet him. “For he who greets him...”
“shares in his evil deeds.” For whoever greets a heretic becomes a participant in that heretic’s evil deeds. And so, my dear friends, let us always remain children of light and always walk as children of light. The Apostle Paul says: “What fellowship has light with darkness?” What relationship can there be between light and darkness? Let us therefore stay far away from knowledge falsely so called. And when we remain far from false knowledge, far from everything that leads us astray, then we shall truly remain within that place where we have the hope of salvation. I wish you a good summer and many blessings. Let me make a few announcements. With today’s subject, by God’s help, we have completed...
our lessons and subjects for this year. I hope that God has blessed this year as well. He gave us the opportunity to speak about the trial of Christ, the death of Christ, the Cross, and His descent into Hades. The Lord has given us many opportunities, and we truly owe Him our thanks and our glorification. I must likewise commend you, as I have done many times. Today is our final subject, and the heat is excessive, yet despite this, such a great crowd of people is gathered here, many standing, following the talks all the way to the final one. This is very encouraging, because it means that the Word of God finds a response within your souls.
During the summer, as every year, if God wills, is pleased, and blesses us, we shall have one talk each month. We shall always meet on a Tuesday: July 31—July, the seventh month, not June, July—July 31, August 28, and September 18. The schedule will be posted; indeed, it has already been posted outside on the door of Saint Achillios. Each Tuesday the talk will be from eight to nine in the evening. On those same dates, God willing, I shall also be at Saint Stylianos for Holy Confession, from eight in the morning until noon. Then, at eight in the evening, we shall have the talk here.
Likewise, throughout the summer—in fact, throughout the entire year—a talk is given at Stomio every Wednesday. We are changing the time beginning next Wednesday. Since the time will change next Wednesday and there would otherwise be no way for you to know, I am making this announcement now. The bus, the coach, will depart from Tachydromeiou Square at six in the evening, and the talk at Stomio will begin at seven. Please keep that in mind. The Wednesday talk at Saint Nicholas in Stomio is held every Wednesday throughout the year. I was also asked to tell you something about Saint Charalambos. Saint Charalambos is a new church, a newly built house of worship.
Glory to God, several new churches in our city have been built very quickly, with very great blessing from God. They were completed remarkably quickly, and Saint Charalambos is one of them. We rejoice in it. It truly is a very beautiful church. As is only to be expected, funds always run out during such major projects. I was therefore asked to appeal to you: if you wish, you may contribute to the collection for Saint Charalambos, so that they can complete another part of the work. A gentleman is here to receive anything that someone may wish to offer, outside at the entrance. If anyone has nothing with them now, they can go to Saint Charalambos and give something toward the continuation of the building work. My dear friends, summer has arrived, and summer has its dangers.
May God help you. Do not forget that summer is dangerous, because although we may stop working, the devil does not. Do not forget that many fires break out in summer—not only in the forests, but also in souls. The devil sets these fires. There is all manner of flammable material: immodest exposure of the body, and so forth, and so forth—highly flammable material. Let us therefore be careful. Let us guard our eyes, guard our ears, and take care about the places we visit. Better a thousand times to roast inside our homes in the heat of Larissa than to burn eternally in the fire of Hell or in the fire of one of the passions. My dear friends, that is infinitely preferable.
You know that if you are planning to go somewhere to cool off—at the seaside or anywhere else—and there will be much sin there, then you must not go at all. If you go somewhere without knowing that sin is present, and then realize that it is, leave at once—quickly, quickly, quickly. Do not leave your wife or your children there either, so that we may not be corrupted by the spirit of deception and of Satan. And when we are watchful, then even in those things where we could not have been careful, God will come to our aid. May He help us truly attain love, holiness, virtue, and union with our Lord Jesus. From the depths of my heart, I wish you a blessed summer.

Τα έσχατα που περνάμε τώρα και που φυσικά είναι μετά την Πεντηκοστή, κατά τον προφήτη Ιωήλ και κατά την ερμηνεία που κάνει ο Απόστολος Πέτρος και κατά τα γεγονότα που έχουμε της Πεντηκοστής ως πλήρωση, θα πρέπει τώρα να μην περιμένουμε έκχυση του Αγίου Πνεύματος, αλλά να περιμένουμε συμφορές. Είναι τόσο φανερόν. Από αυτό βλέπει κανένας ότι υπάρχει σύγχυση, αγαπητοί μου, εις τους ανθρώπους αυτούς. Μεγάλη σύγχυση. Και εφόσον λέγουν ότι αναβαπτίζονται στο Πνεύμα το Άγιο κατά τον ίδιο τρόπο, δηλαδή των εκτάκτων τρόπων της ημέρας της Πεντηκοστής, βρίσκονται σε πλάνη. Μπορούμε να πούμε ότι όλα εκείνα τα οποία αυτοί παρουσιάζουν, μόνο καρποί του Αγίου Πνεύματος δεν είναι. Τι είναι;
Για ποιο λόγο να μιλάω για αιρέσεις; Για ποιο λόγο να φύγω από εδώ και να πάω εκεί; Για ποιο λόγο; Αυτομάτως έχουμε, προσέξτε, αποχαρακτηρισμό των αιρέσεων. Αποχαρακτηρισμό των αιρέσεων, ότι δεν υπάρχει αίρεση, διότι παντού ενεργεί το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Άλλο σημείο. Πάνω από 200 θεραπείες. Είχε γίνει ένα συνέδριο στην Ιερουσαλήμ και είχαν βρεθεί εκεί 4.000 άνθρωποι. Πάνω από 200 θεραπείες σημειώθηκαν στις θεραπευτικές κλήσεις που διευθύνθηκαν από την Κάθριν Κούλμαν τη μια μέρα και από τον Πατ Ρόμπερσον μιαν άλλη ημέρα. Είδατε; Πάνω από 200 θεραπείες. Ακόμη σημειώνει και λέει: ο θεολογικός διάλογος είναι ανωφελής. Τι σημαίνει αυτό; Γιατί να καθόμαστε και να μαλώνουμε περί δογμάτων και θεολογικού διαλόγου; Τα πράγματα είναι πολύ απλά. Εκείνο που έλεγε το πρότυπον μεταξύ Κωνσταντινουπόλεως και Ρώμης, ότι να ανοίξουμε τον διάλογο της αγάπης και όχι τον διάλογο των δογμάτων. Μπορούμε να μιλάμε για αγάπη χωρίς να ξεκαθαρίσουμε την ορθή πίστη;
