Summary
The lecture postpones the vast subject of Christ’s Resurrection, on which humanity’s resurrection depends, to allow it fuller treatment. The Parable of the Weeds teaches that the sons of the Kingdom and the sons of the Evil One coexist until the final judgment, while God allows time for repentance. The Nicolaitans represent a second stream of heresy arising from Gnostic and pagan syncretism, which blended Christianity with mystery religions and philosophical ideas.

My beloved, with today’s talk we should have begun the subject of the Resurrection of Christ, since we have completed our series on “Christ in Hades.” But this subject is very profound, vast, and fundamental; and because the resurrection of mankind depends upon this Resurrection, God willing, we shall leave it until next year—that is, until October. As you will come to understand, the subject of the Resurrection of Christ is truly immense. Consider only the appearances recorded in the Gospels, as well as in the Acts and the epistles, where we find testimonies to the Resurrection of Christ. For example, in 1 Corinthians, chapter 15, the Apostle Paul tells us to whom Christ appeared, including the testimony that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren. Apart from the Gospels, all these testimonies are numerous and distinctive. Each has its own particular features, and each of those features contains a corresponding teaching. Since this subject is so vast—and since the resurrection of mankind depends upon the Resurrection of Christ—we truly must leave it until October, so that we may examine it thoroughly and be edified by it.
We still have three subjects left before we finish. Our final talk will be on the first Sunday of Pentecost, June 3. So, besides today’s talk, we have two more. And because in our own days, my beloved, as a verse from the Psalms says, many savage boars—wild swine—are ravaging the vineyard of the Church planted by Christ through their heresies, it would be good to devote these three talks to this great subject as well: the heretics, those enemies of our Church who attack her from within.
Those who persecute the Church are her external enemies. But those who employ heresy are enemies within. The Church has never feared external persecutions. On the contrary, through persecution by external enemies she has been glorified and magnified, and heroes, saints, and martyrs have arisen and adorned the Church with a purple garment woven from their blood. What the Church has feared is heresy, the enemy within. Therefore, she acts in every possible way to remove every heretical teaching and every heretical person from her midst.
The Church of Christ was founded upon the earth, but, as we know from ecclesiastical history, she was not established on friendly ground. The territory on which she was established was hostile. As we know, through the Fall of our first parents, the earth came under the devil’s dominion. The god of this world was the devil. Through the Fall of our first parents, he took them captive, and he also took possession of the earth. When we say that he took possession of it, we do not mean that the devil was truly the lord of this age. God always remains the Lord, my beloved. But God permitted the devil to exercise his influence
over mankind and over the non-rational creation. Thus, people could very easily become his instruments, and through them the devil could wage war against the Church. For when the Church appeared, the devil had already been crushed upon the Cross of Christ. The subjects we have examined showed precisely this: the devil was defeated there, upon the Cross and in Hades. Yet he was allowed to continue acting—not without restraint, but until the history of the world reaches its end. And when the devil saw that his power had literally been shattered through the Cross of Christ and the Resurrection of Christ, he began to wage war against the Church by a new method: the method of falsification. He no longer comes and says that Christ is nothing, because he was defeated. Instead, he speaks the language of distortion and says, “Yes, of course, I accept Jesus Christ. Certainly! But you see, Jesus Christ was a great man, yet He is not God.” Or else he says, “Certainly He is God, but He did not become man; He only appeared to be human,” and so forth. In other words,
the devil seeks by every means to create a deviation from the truth. This deviation from the truth is called heresy. The Lord warned us that the devil would do this. Notice that the issue of heresy did not exist before Christ. If you open the Old Testament, you will never see heresy mentioned anywhere. What the Jews believed was the faith of the Jewish people and, of course, remained within their geographical boundaries. No one ever thought of corrupting the faith of the Jews—no one. The issue of falsification or heresy never arose in the Old Testament. To be precise,
you may read of the sect of the Sadducees and the sect of the Pharisees. But the word is not being used there in the modern sense of heresy. The Sadducees did not believe in the Resurrection of the Dead, while the Pharisees did. Yet when the text refers to the sect of the Sadducees or the sect of the Pharisees, it chiefly means a party or group, rather than simply a deviation from the faith. In any case, the Old Testament never had to confront the issue of heresy.
On the contrary, from the time Christ came, heresies have multiplied. They have multiplied greatly. Does this surprise you? And what does it mean? It means that the devil had nothing in particular to wage war against in the Old Testament, but he does have something to wage war against in the New Testament.
So now he comes to create heresy. The Lord told us and warned us about this in many ways. On one occasion, He gave a parable intended to show clearly how heresies would appear as soon as He departed from this world. He told the Parable of the Weeds: a man, He says in Matthew 13:24–30, sowed good seed in his field. When the time came for the wheat to sprout, his servants—the laborers and farmers whom he had sent to sow the good seed in his field—realized that weeds had also sprouted among the crop. And they said to their master,
“Lord, was not the seed you gave us good? How, then, have weeds sprung up?” The owner of the field explained their perplexity: “The seed I gave you was certainly good. But during the night, while you had gone to sleep, while everyone was sleeping, an enemy came and sowed the seeds of weeds in the field. When they sprouted, both the wheat and the weeds came up.” That is the whole matter. Then the farmers asked, “Shall we go and uproot the weeds?” But the master answered, “Let both grow together. The hour will come when they will be separated. This will happen when...”
the time comes for the wheat to be gathered into the barn, while the weeds are gathered together and thrown into the fiery furnace.” This is the parable the Lord told. And where, He asked, is the Kingdom of God? In what realm is the Kingdom of God found? It is here in the present world. It is the Church militant, struggling here upon the earth, as He said, “To what shall I liken the Kingdom of God?” You see, then, that the Church is the Kingdom of God—the faithful struggling here on earth. When His disciples asked Him what this parable meant, the Lord answered, “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.” I am the Lord who sows the good seed. “The field is the world.” The field, as we have said, is the world.
“The good seed is the sons of the Kingdom.” The good seed, He says—please pay close attention here—is not His word, but the sons of the Kingdom. Notice this point; it is extremely important. In another parable, He presents the seed as His word: “The sower went out to sow his seed.” And what is that seed? It is the Word of God. The Lord Himself interprets it in this way. But here, what is the good seed? It is the sons of the Kingdom—that is, the people of God. “The weeds are the sons of the Evil One.” He does not say that the weeds are heresies or false teachings. What are they, then? They are heretical
people. That is what happens. “The enemy who sowed them is the devil.” Clearly, then, the enemy is the devil. “The harvest is the end of the age.” What is the harvest? It is the end of the age, the end of history. “The reapers are the angels.” They are the angels, just as the Lord told us elsewhere that He would send His angels to the four ends of the inhabited world to gather His elect.
“Therefore, just as the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.” Just as we gather the weeds and cast them into the furnace, He says, so it will be when this world comes to an end. “The Son of Man will send out His angels.”
“They will gather out of His Kingdom all things that cause stumbling and all those who practice lawlessness.” Thus, there is both stumbling and lawlessness: heresy and a corrupt manner of life. These are two distinct things. “And they will cast them into the fiery furnace,” which is Hell. “There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” We may say, then, my beloved, that here the Lord shows us what will take place in this world from the moment His word begins to be sown and devout, reverent, and faithful people—the sons of the Kingdom—begin to appear.
The sons of the Evil One will exist alongside them. They too will enter the Church, coming into that same field, and within the Church they will create problems, conflicts, and bitter tensions. The Lord does not say “heresy,” but “the heretic.” He does not say “corruption,” but “the corrupt person.” For the text says, “those who practice lawlessness.” It does not speak merely of lawlessness, but of those who commit it. Why is that? You may find it strange that, when the farmers proposed uprooting the weeds, Christ told them to leave things as they were. Does this mean that those who cause stumbling should not be touched? How can this be? The matter concerns cutting off
a member of the faithful who is displaying a troubling and scandalous condition. Such a person should not be cut off immediately; we should wait for his metanoia, his repentance. But if he does not repent, then he will be cut off. For in another passage, the Lord tells us that we are obliged to remove such people. This command is found in the Old Testament and renewed in the New Testament: “Put away the evil person from among yourselves.” You hear that? You must remove the evil person from among you. Here, however, the Lord is speaking of people for whom we still have hope that they may one day be saved. For example, before the Apostle Paul became Paul, he was a cause of stumbling. Yet this man who had been a persecutor later became a fervent Apostle.
The main point here is death: whether God should come and cut short the life of someone who causes stumbling. God does not cut his life short; He lets him live. This is what we so often ask: “Why does this man live on and continue causing scandal? Why does the heretic live? Why is he allowed to spread his heresy?” God permits it. He allows him time for repentance or, at the very least, He deprives the evil and scandalous of the excuse that they had no time to repent. So He lets them live. But this does not mean that the scandalous person and the heretic must remain within the Church—far be it from us to utter such blasphemy! This concerns the person, in the hope that he may repent; it does not mean tolerating heresy and evil. Rather, “Let both grow together.” In any case,
my beloved, the weeds did not take long to appear, exactly as the Lord had said. What the Lord foretold came to pass. Indeed, from the very practice of the Church and from the Apostles themselves—for we shall also bring forward passages from the Apostles—we shall see that this is so. The Lord does not mean that the heretic or the person who causes scandal should remain within the Church. The Evangelist John, the last of the Twelve Apostles to remain in this world, mentions in the Apocalypse two categories of heresy. From these came two streams of heresy. It is good for us to know these categories, so that we may know how to classify
and characterize any heresy that appears in the world throughout history. As the Evangelist John writes in Revelation, chapter 2, the Lord addresses the angel—the bishop—of Smyrna and says to him: “And the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.” Please notice how Christ Himself characterizes a heresy here: a synagogue of Satan. How could the synagogue of Satan ever coexist with the Church? This immediately prevents us from misunderstanding the parable I mentioned earlier and imagining that the heretic must be allowed to remain within the Church. We are not going to kill him. Are we going to put out his eyes? No. Leave the man alone.
He speaks, he blasphemes; I will cut him off from the Church, but I will not cut him off from life. Do you understand, please? I will not put him on a pyre and burn him because he is a heretic. Leave him be; he blasphemes, but leave him be. Yet he will be cut off from the Church. He cannot remain within the Church. So what does the Lord say here in this letter? He speaks of “the blasphemy” of those who say they are Jews, but are not, and are instead a synagogue of Satan. How can someone be described as a Jew and, at the same time, as a member of the synagogue of Satan? What is the synagogue of Satan? It is Satan’s church, his assembly—for a synagogue is an assembly. What, then, is meant here by being a Jew?
Does being a Jew automatically mean belonging to the synagogue of Satan? No, certainly not. But these people say they are Jews. If they were truly Jews—that is, living under the law of God—perhaps their time to believe had not yet come, though they might believe later; they could not simply be called a synagogue of Satan. Here, however, he is speaking of heretics who heard the preaching of the Gospel and believed in the Gospel, but were unwilling to abandon the Judaic spirit. Consequently, they mixed Judaism with Christianity. From this mixture arose heretical groups such as the Nazarenes, the Nazoraeans, the Ebionites, the Elcesaites, and others.
What exactly was involved? As you know, a dispute arose over circumcision and food offered to idols. Christianity was first preached in a Jewish setting: Christ preached to the Jews, to the Hebrews. But then the question arose of spreading the Gospel beyond the borders of Palestine. Bear in mind that the Jews at that time did not want the preaching to spread beyond Palestine. When the Apostle Peter was called to the house of Cornelius, the Christians who came from among the Jews—
—and there Pentecost came upon them through the Holy Spirit—the Apostle Peter himself was called to give an account. Do you hear that? The Apostle Peter was called to account when he returned to Jerusalem. They said to him, “What is this we hear?” These were the zealots. Oh, may God preserve a person from zealots! May God preserve us—may God preserve us! There is no greater calamity than zealots, my dear ones, in any century or age. These are fanatical people, not people who simply wish to preserve the faith intact, because they lack discernment. In the zealot there is a lack of discernment, and there is fanaticism. It is a terrible thing. So they summoned the Apostle Peter. Who were they? Elders—that is, priests of the Temple—and Pharisees who had come to believe in Christ. They said to him, “What is this we hear? You went in to sinful men, to Gentiles.”
“Did you deliver the Gospel to them?” “Yes,” said the Apostle Peter. He recounted everything and said, “Pentecost came upon them just as it came upon us. The Holy Spirit descended; they received illumination, spoke in other tongues, and manifested signs of divine inspiration. Who am I,” said the Apostle Peter, “to hinder God from making believers of people outside Judaism, outside the synagogue? Who am I?” Then they fell silent. Yet a few years later, they raised the same issue again with the Apostle Paul. “Come here,” they said to him. “What is this we hear? Are you teaching that the Gentiles need not be circumcised?”
“Are you teaching them to become Christians without first undergoing circumcision?” What, then, was supposed to happen? The Apostle Paul asked them: “Must someone first pass through Judaism and undergo circumcision before becoming a Christian? In Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any force. Whether you are circumcised or uncircumcised has no importance or value.” Yet an uproar and disturbance arose, always because of these zealots. This very issue would lead to the Apostle Paul’s arrest in Jerusalem and to his being taken in chains to Rome. Then the so-called Apostolic Council was held in Jerusalem. There the Holy Spirit truly judged that circumcision had no bearing and no importance.
They were to observe the requirements concerning food offered to idols and the other matters—I will not go into all the details. The decisions of this Apostolic Council were sent by letter to Antioch, because the Christians there needed reassurance. They were asking, “Can we not be Christians? Must we first become Jews?” The Apostles told them, “Do not be troubled. The matter has been settled. You do not need to become a Jew first. You need only abstain from food offered to idols, sexual immorality, and meat from strangled animals.” These were the three requirements. Later, some Jewish Christians refused to accept the decisions of the Apostolic Council, separated themselves from the Church, and formed their own community. They became known as Judaizing Christians.
In history, then, you will encounter them as Judaizing Christians: Christians who Judaize, accepting, desiring, and insisting on the retention of Jewish elements. Please pay close attention. In his epistles—in Philippians 3:2, 2 Corinthians 11:13, and elsewhere—the Apostle Paul calls them, in no uncertain terms, false brethren, dogs, evil workers, deceitful men, and wicked men. Do you see the terms he uses? From this category of heretics come all the heresies throughout history that mix Christianity with Judaism. If I were now to ask you, my dear ones—
—how would you classify Chiliasm? The answer is not difficult. You would say, “Chiliasm is a Judaizing heresy.” Why? You hear the Chiliasts ask, “Why do you not call God Jehovah?” And we answer, “Why should we call Him Jehovah?” Jehovah is a Hebrew word; in Greek we say “the Lord.” Moreover, when the Jews themselves translated the Old Testament—at a time wholly unrelated to Christianity, three centuries before Christ—they rendered it with the word “Lord.” Not once do we encounter the name Yahweh or Jehovah in the Old Testament. More importantly, not once do we encounter the name Yahweh in the New Testament.
Why should we call God Jehovah? Why? For what reason? Yet they insist, “No, we will call Him Jehovah.” This is simply because these people mix Judaism with Christianity. It is therefore not difficult to identify the origin of Chiliasm; it is perfectly obvious. And you have seen how the Apostle Paul describes these categories of heretics. I will repeat the terms once more: false brethren, dogs, evil workers, and deceitful men. The Lord then continues in the Apocalypse, in His letter to the Church of Ephesus—
—and says the following to the angel, the bishop of Ephesus: “But this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.” Revelation 2:6. He makes several criticisms of the bishop of Ephesus, but says, “You do have this good quality: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate,” says Christ. First of all, please notice the expression “I hate.” Whenever we take a stand against a heretic, people immediately say to us, “Is it right for you, a good man who edifies souls, or a priest—is it right for you, Father, to hate heretics and speak in this way?” What would you have me do? Am I to become some sort of super-Christ? Tell me, am I to become a super-Christ? Christ says that He hates, so what am I?
Am I to set myself above Christ and claim that I have more love than Christ, when He says that He hates the works of the Nicolaitans and praises the bishop of Ephesus, telling him, “At least you have this good quality: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans”? Is this fanaticism, or is it a matter of clearly assigning responsibility? That settles it. You are a heretic; you are a man headed for Hell. Will you not be persuaded? Then leave, you monster. You are excommunicated and cut off from the Church. I will help you; learn the truth. You do not want it? Then you are cut off, and that is the end of it. Do you see? I say this because many people make this objection, unfortunately even in our own day. “Why, Father, why do you speak in such language?” I have heard this so many times. They want to discredit you in the eyes of society, portraying you as narrow-minded and malicious, as a man filled with hatred and nothing else.
But that is not what this is about, my dear ones. This is the proper position. So who were these Nicolaitans? The Nicolaitans, my dear ones, were a heretical group. You may have read or heard that this heresy originated with Nicolas the Proselyte, one of the Church’s seven deacons, but that is highly improbable.
You have probably read or heard this, but it is highly improbable. Irenaeus raises it only as a possibility, a conjecture. We have no source at all telling us that they descended from Nicolas the Proselyte, one of the seven deacons, among whom was also Stephen the Protomartyr. The Nicolaitans were heretics from the time when—
—the Apostle John was still alive. They were of Gnostic origin. What kind of heretics were they? They had first been Gentiles—that is, idolaters. As idolaters, they had taken part in the mysteries of the pagan religions, especially those of the East: the mysteries of Cybele and Attis; in Egypt, those of Osiris and Isis; and in Greece, the Orphic Mysteries, the Thracian Mysteries, and the Eleusinian Mysteries. These were religions with a cultic and initiatory character. In Persia there were also the Mysteries of Mithras, and so forth. When these people heard the preaching of Christianity, they did not believe in Christ wholly, receiving Christ as He is offered to us—
—and abandoning their former beliefs. Instead, they accepted Christianity without giving up anything they had previously held, and they mixed the two together. At that time there was a strong tendency toward mixture, fusion, and syncretism. Syncretism—with an eta in the Greek word. I will not analyze the precise meaning of these terms, but it was a mixing together of whatever ideas were then available. This syncretism existed not only on the religious or philosophical level, but in other areas as well. The same tendency toward syncretism exists today—especially in our own age. We have philosophical syncretism and religious syncretism; we have—
—all these forms of ecumenism: religious ecumenism, commercial ecumenism, and ideological ecumenism. For example, when people today say that, in order to enter the European Economic Community, we Greeks must discard some of our own customs and adopt some European ones, this is nothing other than syncretism, a mixture. I remove one thing and insert another in its place. Thus, syncretism at every level—this mixture, this mingling—was especially widespread from three centuries before Christ to three centuries after Christ, and it is again flourishing greatly today. At that time, then, this tendency was present in the various mystery religions.
They would mix philosophical ideas with Christianity and offer the result as a compound. Needless to say, many variations and shades of belief developed around this movement, all under the general name of Gnosticism—with a capital G. The Nicolaitans were Gnostics. All Gnostics held one basic principle: dualism, or two opposing first principles. They believed in two gods, a god of good and a god of evil. They extended this dualism to heaven and spirit on the one hand, and earth and matter on the other. Heaven and spirit, they said, were created by the good god, while matter and the world were created by the evil god. The human being was a creation of both gods: his spirit was created by the good god, while his body was created by the evil god, whom they called the creator god, the wicked god. I hardly need tell you—you can understand for yourselves—how heretical these teachings are. The mere introduction of two first principles, two gods, makes it perfectly clear. God is the Creator of all things, my dear ones. There is no god of evil and god of good. Nor are there two eternal first principles; matter is not coeternal and without beginning alongside God, as all these dualists wished to believe and maintain. Consequently, they regarded the body as a source of evil.
The goal, then, was to be freed from the body. There were two ways of escaping the body so that the soul might be delivered. One was to subject the flesh to such severe oppression that one would quickly die. This was the way of the Manichaeans, followers of Mani. Mani was a Persian who had mixed together many things: Buddhism and Persian religion, Christianity and Judaism, and so forth. But there was also another approach. I can destroy my body without subjecting it to harsh deprivation. Why should I do that? I can also destroy the body through debauchery—that is, through pleasures. If, for example, I eat excessively, drink excessively and become drunk—
—if I smoke furiously and take drugs as well, will I live for many years? Obviously I will die, and I will plainly die soon. So why not destroy the body in this way, while enjoying life? These were the Nicolaitans. Yet the name “Nicolaitan,” from “Nicolas,” corresponds in meaning to the name “Balaam.” Balaam was the one who placed a stumbling block before the Hebrews, causing them to fall into sexual immorality and to offer sacrifices to the idols of the Gentiles. The Book of Numbers explains this very clearly. Christ also notes it in the Apocalypse, saying that Balaam did this and that. Thus, “Nicolaitan” is a rendering of “Balaam”—of the name Balaam. This is why I told you that the sect had nothing to do with Nicolas the Proselyte, the deacon. Nicolas, after all, is a Greek name.
And Nicholas means one who destroys the people, one who conquers the people. It does not mean the victory of the people, but the one who conquers the people and is therefore a destroyer, a ravager. Thus Balaam and Nicolaitan mean a destroyer, a ravager—a destroyer of his own body. And there Christ says to the bishop of Ephesus, “I hate the works of the Nicolaitans,” who give themselves over to sins of the flesh, to fornication, and to every kind of sin. “I hate their works.” Now, I ask you, does that heresy of the Nicolaitans remind you of anything in our own age? First of all, the Children of God. The Children of God, that sect of Mo—of Moses—which distributes those little booklets and so forth, and which officially includes in its own rules...
fornication. They encourage the young women to engage in fornication in order to collect money; you have surely read about this and the rest. You will also know of the little booklet by Father Ignatios, our preacher. There you have it, then: the Children of God. It contains ample information, and they have rightly fallen into disrepute. I believe the matter is familiar to you. What would you call this sect? Do you know what they say? “Out of love for Christ, we offer our bodies for fornication. I give myself to you because I love you. I love you because Christ told us to love.” In other words, they twist one thing into something entirely different. The Children of God are direct descendants of the Nicolaitans. So it is not difficult to identify them. You see it at once. When we know these things, we are not bewildered and do not say, “What strange things are these?” They have their precedent in history.
We can classify the things that appear in our own time. But when Christianity is mixed with philosophy, mystery religions, and thoroughly human ideas, tell me, what do we produce? Let me mention Manichaeism as one representative and characteristic example. It is worth considering because it is a major ancestor of more recent movements—an extremely important one. Consider Manichaeism, which spread from India all the way to Spain. For that age, such a vast spread of Manichaeism was a great event. It literally swept through Asia Minor and the Middle East, passed into...
North Africa, and reached as far as Spain. Even distinguished men were led astray by Manichaeism. Saint Augustine himself, before he had come to know the Gospel fully, had been led astray by the Manichaeans. I want to mention only one point, to give you a picture by which you may recognize what exists today. Mani had a grandiose plan: he wanted to create a universal religion. “Why,” he asked, “should there be so many religions?” Of course, he did not understand—and how could a person in darkness understand?—that all these are what we call natural religions, and they are false, while only one faith is true: the faith given by revelation, Christ Himself. How could he understand this? Though the Gospel had been preached to him, he remained confined within his own mind...
that is, within his own invention. And he said, “Why should there not be one universal religion? In this way, people will be more closely united.” People say the same thing today: “Let us have one universal religion. What does it matter whether you are a Christian, a Muslim, or a Buddhist? All must be one.” Of course, the process would begin by saying, “Orthodox Christian, Roman Catholic, or Protestant—what difference does it make? We are all Christians.” Then comes the next step: “Why not unite Christianity with Islam, and so on?” Mani therefore wanted to unite everything he could encounter throughout the geographical region stretching from India to Asia Minor and Egypt. And what did he combine? Buddhism, and then...
the local religion of Persia, Judaism, philosophical ideas, and Christianity. He mixed all these together and produced the fabrication that took his name: Manichaeism. Now tell me, can you recognize whether similar movements exist in our own age? I would immediately point to Freemasonry. The resemblance is fundamental and almost exact. What is Freemasonry? Freemasonry is a remarkable descendant of Manichaeism. What is the soul of Freemasonry? Theosophy. And what is Theosophy? It is Hinduism and Buddhism. You can see even in our own age how Buddhist currents are spreading—the attempt in our time to mix Buddhism...
Judaism, mystery religions, ancient customs, and Christianity. Mix them together, and you produce Freemasonry. Take any book about Freemasonry that sets out its teachings, and you will encounter all these elements. You will therefore readily say, “This fabrication is a true descendant of Manichaeism, which the Church fought against.” The Church fought it fiercely. Indeed, you see it here: “I hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate,” says Christ. And when we come to Freemasonry and Theosophy, we also find their little offspring, as they are commonly known. The offspring of Freemasonry include Rotary and Zonta.
Please do not let yourselves be enticed into such circles. I believe Zonta is for women, so take care not to be drawn in, while Rotary is for men. There are also the Lions. “Lion” means a lion—these lionhearted men. I do not know how lionhearted they truly are, but never mind. Then there is that entire chain of movements coming from the Far East, the so-called Buddhist meditation that has taken hold of Europe and America as well. The late university professor Louvaris called this Buddhist meditation “new Buddhism” or “European Buddhism.” If an ordinary person were listening to us now, he would say, “Lord have mercy!”
“Buddhism in Christian Europe? What place does Buddhism have in Christian Europe?” We would tell him, “You are right, noble soul. But you have not realized that Christianity has departed from Europe and, sadly, from our own Greece as well—in many areas and among many of our Christians. Christianity has gone away. Today we live by things alien to it. We have returned to the elements of this world, as the Apostle Paul says.” Thus, as I have told you, it is no longer difficult to discern and classify the heresies found in our age and to say that they belong to the Gnostic category. In these latter years, we have had these two great currents. They are...
Judaizing heresies, such as millenarianism, and Gnostic heresies, such as Freemasonry. Indeed, Simon Magus is regarded as the father of the Gnostic heresies in the sense that they mix Christianity with other things. He is the man whom the Apostle Peter called a man of the devil. The Apostle Peter called him an enemy of the truth and told him to repent; otherwise, he would have no share in life, in true life. Yes, Simon Magus is considered the father of all those Gnostic heresies that mix other teachings with Christianity.
Then there are those heretics whose errors arise from within. They do not appear to take foreign elements—not Judaism or Gnostic heresies, at least not openly. In reality, however, they do, as we shall see later. Who are they? They appear chiefly from the third century after Christ, whereas the other heretics appeared at the same time as the preaching of the Apostles. These are the so-called anti-Trinitarians: the Monarchians, the Sabellians, the Arians, and the Pneumatomachians, or Fighters against the Holy Spirit. After these come the Christological heresies: the Apollinarians...
the Nestorians, the Monophysites, the Monothelites, and so forth. What are all these heresies? As I have told you, they do not seem to contain elements borrowed from outside. Yet they do. What is the foreign element they contain? Consider, for example, an anti-Trinitarian heretic. Who is he? Someone who does not accept that God is Trinitarian. Basing his reasoning on Aristotle, he says, “If I have three hypostases, I have three essences.” I will not weary you; I shall say only one sentence and finish. “If I have three hypostases, three persons, I have three essences. In the same way, if I have three human beings—three persons—I have three essences. Each has his own essence. Therefore I cannot understand...”
“How can there be one essence and three hypostases, three persons?” His conclusion is that God cannot be Trinitarian. He supposes that there must somehow be only one person. Yet, to account for the three Persons, they invent whatever their finite minds desire, my dear friends. The Monarchians, for example, say that in the Old Testament God appears as the Father, in the New Testament He appears as the Son, and in the Church He appears as the Holy Spirit. They claim that He is only one person who changes roles, along with many other dreadful blasphemies. Do you know where this whole matter originates at its deepest level? It begins with rationalism, with philosophy. That is why I told you that these heresies appear to arise from within, but they too borrow elements from outside.
Consider Islam as well, if you please. Why does it deny the Trinitarian God? Because it is actually founded upon Judaism. Islam has taken elements from three sources: Judaism, Christianity, and the local pagan traditions of the Arabs. Muhammad blended them together and presented Islam. But which of these three elements predominates? Not the Christian element, but the Jewish one. Why? Because Islam does not accept the Trinitarian God, just as the Jews to this day do not accept the Trinitarian God. And so we see rationalism entering immediately. Let me give you another example: Monophysitism, which has never, never ceased to exist. It has always remained within the Church; never...
can we say that it was merely the heresy of one particular age. It began with the Docetists, continued into the Monophysitism of the seventh century, and remains present and smoldering beneath the surface even today. At one time people will say that Christ has only the divine nature, and at another that He has the human nature. In reality, they accept only one nature—hence the name Monophysitism. Monophysitism was the cause—and the matter began with the Muslims—of the attack upon the icon of Christ and of iconoclasm. The matter began with the Muslims and the Jews. They ask, “How can God be depicted? Can God be depicted?” Yes, He can be depicted from the moment He becomes fully and perfectly man. Since He becomes perfect man, He can be depicted.
If He were not man, it would of course be impossible to depict Him. For this reason, neither Judaism nor Islam depicts the divine anywhere. They deny the human nature of Christ. It is as simple as that. You see how these things continue to smolder beneath the surface.
These so-called anti-Trinitarian heresies, which attack the dogma of the Holy Trinity—a foundational dogma—actually borrow something either from Judaism or from philosophy, my dear friends. In any event, their way of thinking is philosophical. We shall deal a little further with these anti-Trinitarian heresies and others like them next time, because we must struggle against these as well.
And how many things we have to struggle against! So be it. The point, my dear friends, is that the Lord Himself has already identified this phenomenon of heresy and calls us to take particular care. What does He say? “Take heed that no one deceives you.” Be careful, He says, that no one leads you astray. “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” Matthew 24:4–5. And the Apostle Peter tells us in his Second Epistle, 2:1–3: “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies”—that is, he says, they will introduce heresies that lead to destruction—“even denying the Master who bought them.” They deny Christ, who bought us upon the Cross. When they say...
“He did not suffer; He suffered nothing, because His suffering on the Cross was only an appearance, since He was not truly man but only seemed to be man,” as the Docetists claimed, they deny Him. “And they bring upon themselves swift destruction.” Do you see what the Apostle Peter says? They are preparing swift destruction for themselves. Do you see that the heretic is not saved? The heretic is not saved. “And many will follow their licentious ways”—they will go after them and follow them—“because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words.” They will make merchandise of you with false words.
Their judgment, pronounced long ago, will not delay, and their destruction does not slumber; it will come swiftly. So, my dear friends, we see that there are two categories of heretics: the Gnostic and the Judaizing. We can place whatever appears in our own age into these categories, and by identifying it in this way we will know where we stand and how we should proceed. It is grievous that our Christians should reach the point of saying, “But the millenarian says good things; he does not say anything bad. This heretic says good things too, and so does that one, and the next. The Freemasons also do good works.” But are good works by themselves the issue? The pagans also do good works.
Will they be saved? It is not good works above all that save us; first and foremost, it is the true faith. If it is not the true faith that saves, then why was so much blood shed? Why, then, were there so many confessors and martyrs? Why should I not simply cast a handful of incense before the statue of Zeus or Caesar, if these things do not matter very much? But they do matter greatly. Therefore, my beloved, let us not say that everyone teaches good things. As Saint Ignatius the God-bearer says, heresy is the devil’s weed—an image clearly inspired by the Parable of the Weeds. So let us not go and graze upon the devil’s weed, which is heresy. I earnestly beg you: do not be absent next time. We have very important things to discuss, so that our eyes may be opened and we may see what is happening
right beside us, in our own neighborhood. So I ask that no one be absent. Bring other faithful brothers and sisters as well, so that we may understand what is happening and, through this knowledge, guard ourselves. God willing, we shall continue next Sunday.

Λέγει, βρίζει· θα τον κόψω από την Εκκλησία, δεν θα τον κόψω από τη ζωή. Το καταλάβατε, σας παρακαλώ; Δεν θα τον βάλω επάνω στην πυρά να τον κάψω γιατί είναι αιρετικός. Άσ’ τον, βλασφημά, άσ’ τον. Θα αποκοπεί όμως από την Εκκλησία. Από την Εκκλησία πάλι, δεν μπορεί να υπάρχει μέσα στην Εκκλησία. Λοιπόν, τι λέγει εδώ ο Κύριος στην επιστολή του αυτή; «Καὶ τὴν βλασφημίαν» εξ εκείνων που λέγουν ότι είναι Ιουδαίοι, αλλά δεν είναι, αλλά είναι συναγωγή του σατανά. Πώς τώρα μπορεί κάποιος να χαρακτηριστεί ότι είναι Ιουδαίος και να είναι ταυτοχρόνως άνθρωπος της συναγωγής του σατανά; Τι είναι η συναγωγή του σατανά; Είναι η εκκλησία του σατανά. Συνάγω, συναγωγή του σατανά. Τι είναι αυτή η ιστορία με το να είναι Ιουδαίος κανείς;
τα εξής στον άγγελον, τον επίσκοπον της Εφέσου: «Αλλά τούτο έχεις, ότι μισείς» «τα έργα των Νικολαϊτών, ἃ κἀγὼ μισῶ». Αποκάλυψης Β΄ 6. Αλλά τούτο το καλό έχεις, διότι του κάνει μερικές παρατηρήσεις του επισκόπου της Εφέσου, αλλά έχεις αυτό το καλό, ότι μισείς τα έργα των Νικολαϊτών, που και εγώ τα μισώ, λέει ο Χριστός. Καταρχάς, παρακαλώ, η έκφρασις «μισώ». Όταν κάποτε τα βάλαμε με έναν αιρετικόν, αμέσως μας λένε: Επιτρέπεται εσείς που είστε καλός, που είστε ψυχωφελής ή είστε ιερεύς, ή εσείς πάτερ μου, να μισείτε τους αιρετικούς και να μιλάτε με τον τρόπον αυτόν; Τι θα θέλατε να γίνει; Να γίνω εγώ σούπερ Χριστός; Πέστε μου, σούπερ Χριστός θα γίνω; Ο Χριστός λέει «μισεί» και εγώ τι είμαι;
