Summary

Beginning with Elizabeth in Luke 1:39-56, the Magnificat’s prophecy that every generation would call Mary blessed continues within the Church. Panagopoulos presents the Mother of Christ, who names believers His brethren in John 20:17, as their spiritual mother and enduring intercessor. He defends the veneration of icons as a visible instruction that awakens memory, reverence, and repentance, recalling traditions of images associated with Luke and preserved at Mega Spilaio, Panagia Soumela, and Kykkos; all honor rendered to Mary returns to Christ’s grace. Prophetic figures from Genesis, Isaiah, Ezekiel, the Song of Songs, and Sirach witness to her divine maternity and perpetual virginity, represented by the three stars upon her icons. Her conception and childbirth, Dormition, translation, and heavenly ministry are works of God, placing her above the angelic powers yet always dependent upon and directed toward her Son.

These, then, are the words spoken by our Most Holy Theotokos in the hill country of Judah, before Elizabeth. Elizabeth spoke to her and confirmed that what had been occupying her thoughts was true: she really was with child.

And what the Archangel had told her earlier would all take flesh and bone—that is, it would all truly come to pass.

If you remember, we had reached the point where she said, “For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.” And we offered a series of reflections on how, from the very day of the Conception, this blessing of the Theotokos began.

For even Elizabeth herself, at that first meeting, called her blessed: “Blessed is she who believed that what was spoken to her would be fulfilled.” And later, another woman who was listening to Christ cried out, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts that nursed You.”

From that very moment, then, this prophecy concerning the blessing of the Theotokos began to be fulfilled, because of the work she accomplished and continues to accomplish to this day. In one passage, Isaiah calls our Christ “the Father of the age to come.”

That is in chapter nine, verse six. Yet Jesus Himself is also called our Brother. As He says in John 20:17, “Go to My brethren.” He calls the faithful His brethren, while Isaiah calls Him Father. Consequently, according to Isaiah’s prophecy, our Most Holy Theotokos is presented as our grandmother; and according to the words of Christ, she is presented as our Mother.

She is therefore both grandmother and Mother, because she gave birth to God—and where the Son is, there also are the Father and the Holy Spirit—and thus to our Father. At the same time, she also gave birth to our Brother, as He says elsewhere: “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren.” He calls us His brethren, His little ones. And after His Resurrection He says, “Go and tell My brethren,” while He also speaks of the Apostles as His brethren.

“Go and tell My brethren, and Peter.” She is therefore a person whom we must call blessed, because of all that she bears within herself. In the Song of Songs, Solomon says: “My dove, my perfect one, is one. The daughters saw her and called her blessed; the queens and concubines praised her.” All of them—the queens and even the concubines—will call her blessed. In other words, the whole world will call the Theotokos blessed. This is found in the Song of Songs, chapter six, verse eight.

And Saint Mark of Ephesus, in the third ode of the canon for the Dormition of our Most Holy Theotokos, says: “Blessed are those who dwell in your house”—blessed are those who dwell within your church—“they shall praise you unto the ages of ages. Blessed are those who behold you in an icon,” those counted worthy to see you in the icon, “radiant with the splendor of grace which you yourself imparted to it while still living, O All-Pure One.” While still living, O All-Pure One, you bestowed this radiance upon the icon.

Do you know what he is speaking about here? He is referring to the icons painted by the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. For those who do not know, let me explain: while our Most Holy Theotokos was still living, Luke visited her in the house of John, where she was staying after the Lord entrusted her to him from the Cross.

We read in the nineteenth chapter of John: “Behold your mother,” and, “Behold your son.” Luke, who painted as an amateur, saw how beautiful she was and desired to portray her. Hence the words concerning the Hodegetria: “depicted by the most sacred Luke”—or rather, “which was depicted by him.”

He therefore made three icons of her. The first was made with wax and mastic. It still exists today and is kept at the Holy Monastery of Mega Spilaio in Kalavryta. Although the monastery has burned down three times, and although the icon is made of wax and mastic, while nothing else remained of the monastery, the icon was merely darkened by smoke and survives to this day.

The second icon is kept at Kastania, on Mount Vermio, at the place known as Soumela, where the Holy Monastery now stands. The Pontians who came from Soumela, from Mount Mela, brought it here with them.

Or rather, that is not exactly how the story goes. The icon had remained hidden there, and a hieromonk who fell asleep three years ago knew where it was concealed. Venizelos then made representations through Atatürk, who gave his consent. Our people went, found the icon, took it, and brought it here to the Byzantine Museum in Athens.

The Pontians, however, took an interest in it, and the icon was given to them. They established the settlement near Mount Vermio and built the Monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos of Soumela there, where many people have gone to venerate it.

That icon is painted in color on wood. The third icon is preserved to this day at the Holy Monastery of Kykkos in Cyprus. It remains covered and is seen by no one. A Turk once tried to uncover it and was struck dead by lightning. His grave is there beside it as testimony.

These three icons of the Most Holy Theotokos, painted by the Apostle and Evangelist Luke, were shown to her while she was still living. When she saw them, she blessed them and said, “May the grace of Him who was born of me, my Lord and my God, be with them.” Clearly the hymnographer has this in mind when he says, “Radiant with the splendor of grace which you yourself imparted to them while still living, O All-Pure One”—for while you were still living, you blessed these holy icons.

Concerning the icon in Cyprus, it is also said that, as the monk was carrying it up the untouched mountain of Kykkos, a bird flew ahead of him, singing: “On the mountain of Kykkos a monastery shall arise; a golden Lady shall enter it, and she shall never depart.”

The bird was speaking of the Theotokos. Thus the hymnographer says here, “Blessed are those who behold you in an icon.” Why does he say this? Have you ever wondered why there is such hatred against the holy icons on the part of the heretics? The first thing a Jehovah’s Witness will say upon entering is that you must take down those idols—that is what he calls the icons.

Why do Protestants, and all the others, attack the icons? Because icons remind the human person, teach the human person, and bring the human person to katanyxis, to compunction. Saint Gregory the Theologian said that whenever he saw the Crucifixion depicted in an icon, he could never pass by it without tears.

He could not look upon the Crucifixion without weeping over what God did for us on Golgotha. This, as I was saying, is connected with those three icons. And since we are speaking of them, let me take this opportunity to tell you that, according to some, seventy icons were made from those three; according to others, one hundred and twenty; and according to still others, one hundred and fifty. Those three are the prototypes.

They are attributed to the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. Luke himself painted only three; those were the three he worked on. Others then worked from what he had left behind.

She was therefore fully justified in prophesying that all generations would call her blessed. And you know that she is called blessed to this very day. Christ has bestowed such radiance, such power, and such grace upon the Most Holy Theotokos that at times it may seem as though people stray even from the dogma: instead of being worshippers of Christ, as they should be—for Christ saves and the Theotokos intercedes—they become worshippers of the Most Holy Theotokos.

But since Christ condescends to approve these things concerning the Theotokos, we have no reason to think otherwise. You may ask why I say this. Something has come to mind that I had intended to tell you on another evening, in another connection.

But it belongs here now, so while it is on my mind, I want to tell you. While the Apostles were still alive and the Most Holy Theotokos was also living, John and Peter built a church in Lydda, dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos.

From the earliest days, there have been churches dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. And yet the Protestants say what they say. The Protestants appeared in the sixteenth century, brought forth by Luther; and let the Jehovah’s Witnesses say what they will—they appeared only in the nineteenth century, brought forth by Russell.

But here we have Christianity from the earliest days, from the time when Christ Himself was upon the earth. So they built a church in Lydda in honor of the Most Holy Theotokos. They went to her and asked her to come there, to see what they had built and to bless the house of God.

She said to them, “Go, and you will find me there.” And indeed, when they arrived, they found her icon upon the iconostasis, an icon not made by human hands.

You can imagine what those men felt. And the Most Holy Theotokos said, “I thank my Lord, who has granted that so many impossible things should be accomplished through me.” For she had not done this herself; the Lord had done it. He had granted that the image of His mother should appear there.

On another occasion, they built another church, and the Jews laid claim to it and tried to take it from them.

Once again, the matter was brought before a court, and they asked for justice. The judge said, “The church—this temple—will be closed. If some sign appears and shows us the truth, then we shall decide to whom it should be given.

For now, because of the dispute, it will remain closed. Neither you nor the others may have it. You built it, but I shall lock it.”

After some time, they went and opened it. And there, imprinted upon one of the columns, they found an image of the Theotokos, surpassingly beautiful. The Christians ran to the presiding judge and said, as we were saying, “Come and see!” They went there and saw it.

The column was red on the outside and green within, and upon it was our Most Holy Theotokos in all her beauty. The judge asked, “Who is this?” One of the men, who knew something of Christianity, replied, “She is the mother of our Christ; she belongs to our faith.”

The others also acknowledged this, and so the church was given back to the Christians, to whom it rightfully belonged. When we have such events before us, you understand what may be said and what a person may think concerning the Theotokos.

Therefore, what she said—“From now on all generations will call me blessed”—was true. It was true then, it is true now, and it will remain true until the end of the age for all who believe in Christ and in His mother.

Why is this so? “For He who is mighty has done great things for me.” This is precisely why all generations will call me blessed: “For He who is mighty has done great things for me.” She does not attribute these things to herself; she attributes the great things to the Mighty One.

These are words of humility. If all generations call me blessed, it is not because I am worthy of blessing in and of myself, but because the Mighty One has done great things for me. The question of who the Mighty One is belongs to what follows. But we already know who the Mighty One is for us.

The Wisdom of Sirach also speaks about these great things, and the Most Holy Theotokos spoke as one thoroughly versed in the Old Testament. Indeed, if we accept the tradition that during the eleven years she remained in the Temple she read the Old Testament and came to know it almost by heart, we shall not be far from the truth.

The Wisdom of Sirach, chapter 18, verse 3, says: “Who can trace out His mighty works?” “Who can trace them out?” We might likewise ask, “Who can trace out her mighty works?” For we always place the Theotokos between Christ and ourselves.

Regardless of that, as one brother pointed out to me one evening, Christ indeed remains God; yet Saint Paul says there is one God and, between God and the faithful, one mediator: the man Jesus Christ. Yes, the man Jesus Christ is the mediator.

But between the man Jesus Christ and the faithful stands the Theotokos as intercessor. “Intercede with Him who was born of you.” Who was born of her? Christ. Intercede, then, with Him who was born of you—with the man Jesus Christ, to whom you gave flesh, whom you sheltered for nine months in your womb.

“Intercede with Him who was born of you, O Lady of the world; become our intercessor.” And so we have the Theotokos interceding for us: “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” This sacred order is displayed beautifully, vividly, and instructively upon the iconostasis of the Orthodox Church.

These are the two who have taken hold, so to speak, of the gate that restores mankind to Paradise. Adam and Eve once had their place there, but through disobedience they closed the gate. Now these other two have come and opened it again.

The one intercedes, and the other saves; and mankind enters. Through the Beautiful Gate comes the call, “With fear of God,” and the faithful receive remission of sins and eternal life, passing onward toward the Kingdom of Heaven.

Great things, then, He has done for her. And do you know where these great things begin? They begin in Eden, with the prophecy God made concerning her, with His foreknowledge of her; for He foreknew her before she came into being.

For, as we have often said when speaking of the woman whose seed would crush the serpent’s head—we read this in Genesis 3:15—we are speaking of her. God foretold that her seed would crush the serpent’s head, while the seed of the serpent, of Satan, would bruise His heel: according to His human nature, it would nail Him to the Cross.

Christ would crush Satan’s power, empty his tombs, and bring His Kingdom; while Satan, according to Christ’s human nature, would nail Him to the Cross. If you wound a man in the heel, he does not die. That is precisely why the prophecy speaks in this way.

But if his head is crushed, he dies, for death follows when the head is crushed. And the serpent is especially vulnerable in its head. This is why the Lord says elsewhere, “Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” The serpent is wise because it seeks to protect its head. Strike it from behind, and you do it little harm.

But if you strike it on the head... That is why I say that the foreknowledge of these great things is from all eternity.

God chose her from among a multitude of people. As I told you the day before yesterday, many righteous and holy people of the Old Testament passed through this world, yet He chose none of them. Christ, so to speak, sifted the human race and its bloodline, passing it through many stages—through seventy-seven generations, as I was telling you, according to the genealogy recorded by Luke. From Adam to Joseph the Betrothed there are seventy-seven generations.

Seventy-seven generations, then, passed before the fitting person appeared—the person through whom God would become man. Concerning the Theotokos, her body, and her purity, Ezekiel says the following in chapter 43, verse 2: “Behold, the glory of the God of Israel came by the way of the east.” The earth signifies the body of the Theotokos.

She who was wholly pure shone like radiance amid the glory surrounding her. This is how Ezekiel beheld her prophetically. Indeed, Ezekiel also speaks of the virginity of the Theotokos.

He saw, he says, the gate facing east, and it was shut. The Lord entered through it, remained, and came forth, while the gate remained shut. This is a prophecy of the Theotokos as Ever-Virgin, and it is read at a feast of the Theotokos.

At the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple, for example, and at the Dormition, a special prophecy from Ezekiel concerning the Theotokos as Ever-Virgin is read in the evening at Vespers.

Thus the Holy Spirit proclaimed prophetically both her coming and the great things that would be accomplished in her.

Another great thing is that she conceived according to God’s promise and through an angelic proclamation. It was not merely a man who brought her some message. She conceived after a prophecy delivered by an angel. The Archangel was at work in all this; in a certain sense, he had been preparing this woman from her earliest days.

Indeed, from her mother’s womb. Did not the Archangel go and announce to the elder Zacharias that his wife would conceive? From that moment the matter begins to unfold: the preparation for the Theotokos and, more broadly, for the whole divine economy of salvation.

We shall see that this is so the day after tomorrow, at the feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple, when she enters at three years of age. The Church will begin to chant, as I told you on another evening, “Christ is born; glorify Him!” Do you see? The child entering the Temple is the one from whom Christ will be born. The hour has come.

And a very long time had passed before this took place—some five thousand five hundred years.

There is a difference between Saint Anna and those women of the Old Testament who were barren. Sarah was barren, Rebekah was barren, Samson’s mother was barren, and Hannah, the wife of Elkanah, who bore Samuel, was barren, and so on. All of them gave birth to sons. Of all the barren women in the Old Testament, Saint Anna alone gave birth to a daughter. When their wombs were opened and they conceived, they conceived sons. Only the conception of Saint Anna was different.

There is yet another great wonder concerning the Theotokos, in her conception and her birth. Have you ever read in the sixty-sixth chapter of Isaiah how it speaks of the manner in which Christ was born?

“Before the pains of labor came upon her, she gave birth.” The Theotokos suffered no labor pains when she gave birth.

She conceived without pleasure and gave birth without pain. These are great wonders. And when she says, “He who is mighty has done great things for me,” they truly are great things. After the Fall, after sin, a woman gives birth to her children in pain. This is the punishment.

What did God say to Eve because of what she had done?

“You shall give birth to your children in pain.” How would she have given birth before the Fall? She would have given birth without pain. Pain is a punishment, a consequence of sin. The Theotokos did not conceive in the manner in which human beings ordinarily conceive; otherwise she would have brought a mere man into the world, not God, because human seed is always marked by sin.

For this very reason, she conceived by the Holy Spirit. She conceived without pleasure and gave birth without pain. Another great and solemn wonder is this: for nine months, without weariness, she carried Him who carries all things. Without weariness.

Not like women today, who need a doctor and a microbiologist to monitor their Rh factor, their vitamins, and everything else, only to bring forth some sniveling little thing rather than a child!

She carried Him without weariness. Woman was not created to suffer during pregnancy.

All these things are consequences of our sin and of the fallen condition of the human body, because it has been wholly affected by sin. None of these things happened in her. These are extraordinary things. These are truly great things.

A person cannot easily grasp or understand them unless he considers them very carefully. She also gave birth without corruption. Everything took place without her body suffering corruption, and she remained undefiled: before giving birth, while giving birth, and after giving birth. She did not lose her virginity.

She is the Ever-Virgin. For this very reason, from ancient times, iconographers, moved by the Holy Spirit, have placed three stars upon the Theotokos in her icon: one star upon her head, one upon one shoulder, and one upon the other shoulder.

These are the three stars of the Theotokos, which also inspired me to write a special book entitled The Three Stars of the Theotokos. She is a virgin before, during, and after giving birth—Ever-Virgin. These are the three stars of her virginity, signifying the perpetual virginity of the Theotokos.

These are the things I am telling you. Another great wonder concerning her is the resurrection of the Theotokos, the translation of the Theotokos, and the reunion of her soul and body, as she is today. What other human being has been counted worthy of such wonders?

Which of the great ones ever received such an exceptional honor? The Theotokos alone. Therefore, she did not speak falsely; she made no mistake, nor could she have made one. For the words she spoke were spoken by Him, with her as His instrument.

Her pure soul and her pure tongue were guided by Him whom she carried within her. She communicated Him through her kiss to the elderly Elizabeth, who then uttered her prophecy. It was precisely He who dwelt within her—this grace—that spoke, and so naturally she could not be mistaken.

Concerning this final thought, Saint Andrew of Crete says: “How could the translation be false?” How could the account of the Most Holy Theotokos’s departure not be true, he asks, when all the other events also came together: the separation of the soul from the body, the death of the Mother of God, the laying aside of the flesh, the burial, the separation of her parts, the Ascension, their joining together again—that is, the reunion of soul and body—and her withdrawal into the unseen realm?

Do we possess anything of the Theotokos today? Was she not buried? Do we not have her tomb? But do we possess anything from her? Do we have her relics? Do we have her body? We have nothing. These are extraordinary things. They are numbered among the great wonders that our Christ accomplished in her person.

Saint Andrew also says in two other places: “Let the All-Pure One be magnified with songs of praise.” He tells us to magnify the All-Pure One with songs of praise. “Let the All-Blessed One be worthily called blessed.” Let us worthily call the All-Blessed One blessed.

For she died and rose again. She fell asleep and she arose, “as the Mother of the Lord, as confirmation of the final resurrection for which we hope.” She is an example, he says. Someone might say, “Yes, Christ arose, but He was God. What about us, who are human beings—will we arise?” Behold the answer.

And His Mother, who was fully human, also rose from the dead. Having received the Author of life, and having been illumined, on the third day she gloriously disappeared from the tomb. She ascended to heaven, reigns together with her Son, and asks Him to forgive our transgressions. She is there with Christ and reigns with Him, interceding every day and imploring Him for the forgiveness of our sins.

Saint Theodore the Studite also says in one of his homilies on the Most Holy Theotokos: Through her Dormition, the Theotokos was counted worthy of rebirth and renewed life, which is nothing other than her Resurrection.

Whenever you look at the icon of the Last Judgment found in every Church—painted according to the Orthodox tradition, and placed specifically by the door through which we leave—remember that it is there so we may see what awaits us. Take heed as you go out into the world.

It depicts the Lord seated, with the honorable Forerunner on one side and the Most Holy Theotokos on the other. They intercede even now—or rather, they will continue to intercede until the end of the age, today and tomorrow, until the end of the age.

David, in Psalm 44, also speaks of this particular mystery: the translation and Resurrection of the Theotokos. She departed and went, as the hymnographer says, to the right hand of our Lord. Indeed, the Church uses this very passage from Psalm 44 when, during the Prothesis, the priest or bishop removes the portion for the Theotokos and places it upon the holy diskos.

At the holy Proskomedia he says: “The queen stood at Your right hand, arrayed in a garment woven with gold and adorned in many colors.” This is the very scene: she truly rose, stands at the right hand of the Lord, and intercedes for us.

Every woman whose barrenness God ended gave birth to one person. But because of the One whom the Theotokos bore, her childbearing became the cause of salvation for vast multitudes—thousands and millions of people throughout all the ages. Yet even if all the saved, together with all the angels and archangels, were united and tried to count and recount the great things accomplished in the Virgin, they could never fully express them.

She is a mysterious person, a wondrous person. Not even the angels can explain how they came to minister to a human being, how she was placed above the Cherubim and above the Seraphim. And bear in mind where Orthodox iconography places her!

In the image of the Pantocrator, Christ comes first, for He upholds all things; and in the foremost place among the angels stand the Theotokos and the honorable Forerunner. For the Theotokos was in the mind of God from before He created the world.

This is why iconography places her among the angelic powers. Do you understand? The Most Holy Theotokos, then, is the great wonder of God’s awesome dispensation—the awesome dispensation of salvation, for it is truly awe-inspiring.

Saint Andrew also says specifically on this subject: “You, O Theotokos, are the great wonder of God’s awesome dispensation, into which the angels desire to look.” Something is taking place that they cannot comprehend. They long to behold it, yet they cannot understand it or take part in what is being accomplished in the Theotokos.

What kind of mystery is this? This is why the divine John Chrysostom, who was himself guided by the Holy Spirit and who, as becomes evident the more you read him, deeply loved and revered the Theotokos, cries out concerning her: “There is nothing in this life like Mary the Theotokos.”

Nothing, he says—nothing in this life, nothing upon the earth—is like Mary the Theotokos.

“O man, range over the whole creation in your thought.” You cannot do so bodily, but journey through all creation with your nous, the spiritual intellect, and see whether anything is equal to or greater than the Holy Virgin Theotokos—whether anywhere you can find anything comparable to, or greater than, the Most Holy Theotokos.

“Travel around the earth; survey the sea; examine the air; search the heavens with your spiritual understanding; call to mind all the angelic powers, and see whether there is any other wonder such as this in all creation.” There is none. It is true; John Chrysostom is not mistaken.

This is why she says, “For He who is mighty has done great things for me.” If anyone refuses to believe in the manner of her conception, the Most Holy Theotokos is saying here: Do not disbelieve, for the mighty God accomplished these great things; I did not accomplish them myself.

And when she speaks of “the Mighty One,” she is speaking of God. He is the Mighty One. David also speaks of this Mighty One in one of his Psalms, showing that this work reveals the almighty power of God.

Yet He united them and made them one man.

For in the union He preserved the two natures without confusion, and the two wills and energies without alteration. The human nous cannot grasp this; it is beyond comprehension. So I did not accomplish it. The Mighty One, O man, accomplished these things.

Do not reject them because of your reasoning. Do not reject them because of your mathematics or your knowledge. These are the works of God; I did not accomplish them. This is what she means here. Thus Psalm 44 says: “Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty One.”

This is written in Psalm 44. Basil the Great takes this verse and interprets it as follows.

“Well, then, has the word ‘mighty’ been added.” It is rightly placed there, he says, because the greatest proof of power is that God was able to enter human nature and become man. That God should become man within human nature is the achievement of One who is truly mighty.

So, he says, this word has been placed there most appropriately.

“For the creation of heaven and earth is not so great a thing.” It is not so difficult, he says, to make heaven or earth, or to bring into being the sea, the air, and the great elements. Even the sea, he says, is easy to make, as are all the other elements of creation.

Whether it is the intelligible world above the heavens or the world beneath the earth, everything bears witness to the power of God the Word. He can create all things. But nothing compares with the divine economy of His becoming man—with His condescension toward lowly and weak humanity.

And consider how God condescended to lowly man. This is what scandalizes many people, especially Jehovah’s Witnesses. They refuse to acknowledge that He is God and became man. They reject what Paul says plainly in Philippians: though He was God, He did not regard this as something to be grasped selfishly, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant and becoming man. In other words, He did not say, “I am God, and I will not come down.” No.

He emptied Himself—He poured Himself out—and took the form of a servant, the form of man. And when He was found in the form of a servant, how far did He go? As far as death, even death on the Cross. Satan cannot comprehend this, for he himself sought only to rise higher. How could he ever imagine that God would descend so far and humble Himself so deeply? Satan himself would never have done such a thing. And because he would not do it, he imagines that God would do it even less.

Yet Satan was deceived by God’s humility. Power can create all things, Saint Basil the Great says—these are not my own words—but this becoming man, this divine economy, can be accomplished only by the mighty God. No one else can accomplish it.

And David says again, in Psalm 70, verse 20:

“O God, who is like You? You have shown me great and mighty things.” David says this as well: “You have done great things for me, O God.” If we too wish to partake of the great things that the Theotokos received, and that all those who truly loved her received, then we must magnify her. For her grace is reflected to us: when you place a mirror before the sun, you immediately receive its light.

So if you place your heart, your soul, and your life before the life of the Theotokos—before her purity, virginity, chastity, and all her other virtues—you will receive corresponding blessings. In keeping with her greatness, therefore, we too must magnify her, as one writer says.

If we do this, the Most Holy Theotokos will share with us something of her greatness and her grace. Do you see? When she came into contact with the elderly Elizabeth, Elizabeth prophesied. As I told you another evening, the Theotokos once stood before a beautiful flower that had no fragrance.

Poor little flower! Her hands caressed it, and afterward it gave off such a sweet fragrance that people passing along the road would stop to smell it. It was something the hands of the Theotokos had touched. Therefore, anyone who has a relationship with her and seeks in some way to imitate her will receive corresponding good fruits.

She was the first to receive within herself the fullness of Him who fills all things; she was the first to contain within herself the One who fills the whole universe. And so, as one Father says in a homily for the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple—I did not note his name—she makes Him accessible to all, according to the degree and measure of each person’s purity. Thus she is both the steward and the guardian of the riches of the Godhead.

Whoever has a relationship with her—the one who received within herself the fullness of Him who fills all things—will receive through her according to the measure of his own purity. It cannot be otherwise.

There is one more thing we need to understand. As an elder, a spiritual father, used to tell me when I was a child:

To acquire something, you need a school grade of “very good.” But to preserve what you have acquired, you need a grade of “excellent.”

And we know that those who were careless lost both material possessions and gifts of grace. The Theotokos did not stop and say, “I am the Theotokos; what could I possibly lack?” No. Afterward, until her departure from this world, she continued to struggle through ascesis, through ascetic discipline, to preserve this grace, because its preservation also depends upon us.

And it is recorded—and I tell you this because we need to know it—that after the Ascension of her Son, she strove zealously to preserve the great gifts the Lord had granted her, through fasting, prayer, and prostrations.

Perhaps this seems strange to you. Perhaps you think she had no need of such things. Some of us should pay close attention to this, because all these things are necessary. And she did so through every kind of ascesis, as Saint Gregory of Thessalonica truly says.

Even after the ascent into heaven of Him who had taken flesh from her, she responded to the great gifts He had bestowed upon her—gifts surpassing both intellect and speech—with steadfast and manifold ascesis, with prayers for the whole world, and with zeal, counsel, and exhortation for the God-proclaiming preachers who were to travel to the ends of the earth.

That is, she even comforted the Apostles, taught them, and told them how they should act and what they would suffer; and she shared in their struggles and their pain. This is why another hidden tradition is also told, which some of you may not have heard: from the many prostrations of the Theotokos, the stone slabs upon which she bent her knees became hollowed out.

Saint Andrew of Crete, having received this through tradition, says that it was not without purpose that the Most Holy Theotokos remained in Zion. He says that the very slabs beneath the sacred knees of her all-pure body initiate us into this great mystery: the stone slabs laid upon the ground speak aloud, hollowed out by the countless prostrations of the Theotokos.

I say all this for the sake of many of us, because we imagine that once the Lord has granted us something and entrusted something to us, that is the end of the matter. No. You must guard it carefully, because otherwise it will be taken from you and you will lose it.

This depends on our own spiritual zeal and our own watchfulness. How many young men and women were given the gift, the talent, of virginity? How many were given a special invitation, called to remain virgins, to become brides of Christ, to become nuns—and yet they lost it, and now they weep and lament.

Even if their pride does not allow them to admit it now, one day they will admit that what they failed to guard was indeed taken from them. They should have protected it like the apple of their eye, for it is not given to everyone, nor does God give it to everyone.

Such carelessness and lack of spiritual zeal toward a gift that others do not possess is a very serious matter for a believer. And, as I say, many people are careless. The same happens with material things. Many times God helps us acquire something, but then, as the saying goes, it goes to our heads. We imagine that we will always be capable of acquiring more, and before long we find ourselves with nothing.

Great wisdom is needed in this matter. Look at how the Most Holy Theotokos lived afterward. At her Dormition she was found to possess only two garments: the one in which she was laid upon her bier, and another that she gave to one of her friends, one of the two women who lived in the same neighborhood.

Why did she live this way? Because she believed that everything in this life is temporary. She took care not merely to adorn herself outwardly, putting on an appearance and deceiving people, but to adorn herself inwardly.

“All the glory of the King’s daughter is within,” says the Prophet David with striking clarity in Psalm 44.

“All the glory of the King’s daughter is within.” Therefore, it is not enough simply to chant the Axion Estin to her. Truly, “It is meet”; yes, she is worthy. Nor is it enough merely to offer all the other beautiful hymns that our Church has for the person of the Theotokos. Above all, as far as we are able, we must live our own lives according to her life.

Then she may, in some way, impart to us something of the great things bestowed upon her. For it is a great blessing to have the Theotokos beside us, both today and unto the ages, as our advocate and our helper. We have a profound need for the support of the Theotokos here in this life and there in the life to come. And I pray that we will labor to understand this need. That is all for tonight.

Υπάρχει δε άλλο μεγαλείο στο πρόσωπό της, στη σύλληψή της και στη γέννησή της. Έχετε διαβάσει ποτέ σας στον Ησαΐα, στο εξηκοστό έκτο κεφάλαιο, που αναφέρει για τη γέννηση του Χριστού τίνα τρόπον εγεννήθη;

«Εσύ, γι' αυτό που έκανες», τι λέγει ο Θεός της Εύας;

Αυτά που σας λέω. Άλλο μεγαλείο επίσης στο πρόσωπό της είναι: Ανάστασης, που είναι η Θεοτόκος. Μετάστασης, που είναι η Θεοτόκος. Και ένωσης ξανά ψυχής και σώματος, που είναι η Θεοτόκος σήμερα. Ποιος άνθρωπος αξιώθηκε αυτά τα θαύματα;
