Summary
Panagopoulos places the Theotokos, after God, at the centre of Orthodox teaching on humanity’s passage from the Fall toward Paradise. He traces the Church’s nine biblical odes through deliverance, prayer, and thanksgiving—from Israel’s song in Exodus 15 to the witness of Jonah 2—and explains how hymnography preserves doctrine concerning the Trinity, Christ, and Mary’s perpetual virginity. The ninth ode, the Magnificat, springs from the Annunciation and Mary’s free assent: Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, confesses her as Mother of the Lord, while the unborn Baptist recognizes Christ. Mary’s virtues and scriptural prefigurations disclose her as the bridge of the Incarnation; her visit to Elizabeth also teaches believers to test spiritual experience through humble recourse to seasoned guides and to transmit the received faith faithfully.
