Summary

The lecture distinguishes ordinary moral goodness from authentic Christian life, insisting that Christ came to form people through the Church, the sacraments, and the Gospel. Cornelius’s almsgiving prompts a call for regular, sacrificial, and honest charity toward the poor and toward Christian missionary work. Cornelius is therefore directed to summon the Apostle Peter, showing that divine grace, the proclamation of Christ, the Holy Spirit, and baptism complete what natural piety cannot.

And this evening, by the grace of God and through the prayers of the Holy Fathers, I would like to say something that may give even good people cause for reflection. You know, especially in our day, so-called good people have taken the place of Christians. It is one thing to be a good person and another to be a Christian. We must pay attention to this. It is not that a Christian is not, or should not also be, a good person. But very often a so-called good person is not a Christian at all.

Hell is full of good people. Who does not go to Hell? Christians. You will not find Christians in Hell—not Christians on paper, not Christians on identity cards, not Christians who merely observe outward forms, but true Christians, who both bear the name and live the reality, as Saint Ignatius the God-bearer says: “I do not want merely to be called a Christian, but also to be found to be one.” And so our age today, in order to avoid the Church, to avoid the Mysteries, and to avoid all the “do nots” and “thou shalt nots” proclaimed by the Gospel...

Good people do exist—I admit that there are very good people in the world—but they may not be Christians at all. Christ did not come into the world to make good people. He came to make Christians; and conscious, committed Christians are naturally also good people. A good person does not steal. A good person does not lie, for example, or do other such things. But may a Christian do them? Should he do them? The moment he becomes a Christian, he can no longer steal. He may know where valuables have been left lying about, and perhaps once his eye would have fallen on them and he would quickly have looked for an opportunity to take them; but now, when he sees them exposed, he fears God.

So this is the sickness of our day. When we begin speaking to many people about the Gospel, about the moral values of the Church, or about the purpose of the Church, they answer: “No—you do not know what I do in secret. Never mind that I do not go to church; I have my own close relationship with the Nazarene.” In other words, “I am all right.” He issues himself a certificate of good standing. He insists that he does many good things but does not care to speak of them or to go to Church. He keeps his distance and still believes that all is well with him, although he does not live according to the law of the Gospel.

And some of these things, unfortunately, are also done by us so-called Christians. Then others say, “What I do is not even done by the so-called Christian—the one who goes to church and receives Holy Communion—yet I do it.” For we become the reason, as Isaiah says, that the name of the Lord is blasphemed among the nations. Yet one matter is one thing, and the other is another. To confirm what I have said and support this position, I shall draw upon an incident from the New Testament. It presents the matter very vividly and is especially helpful here. By coincidence, it concerns a person whom our Church commemorated the day before yesterday, on Sunday. But because of the other events commemorated that Sunday, the Sunday before the Exaltation...

and the other commemorations observed by the Church, this person was not discussed at all. He is a figure from the days of the Holy Apostles and is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. Those of you who read Scripture and wish to find the passage will find it in the tenth chapter of Acts. Listen to what it says. This is the text I have brought with me this evening: “There was a certain man in Caesarea named Cornelius.” A man in Caesarea, it says, whose name was Cornelius. “A centurion of what was called the Italian Cohort.” He was clearly a military officer, and he was in command of one hundred soldiers.

That is precisely what he was.

“A devout man who feared God with all his household, who gave many alms to the people and prayed to God continually, saw clearly in a vision, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him and speaking to him.” Here was a man of the Italian Cohort named Cornelius, who was devout and feared God—he was a God-fearing man. And not only he, but his whole household: “with all his household.” He was a man of almsgiving and a man of prayer, one who “prayed continually.” Thank you.

At three in the afternoon, the ninth hour, he saw an angel of the Lord in his house, and the angel said certain things to him. We shall see what he told him a little later. But I would like to pause at this point. Cornelius possesses a fourfold set of virtues: devotion, fear of God, almsgiving, fasting, and prayer—five, in fact. Yet this is a man who still has no relationship with Christ, an unbaptized man, a man who has not yet received grace and is still a stranger to all these things. We cannot dispute the truth of the account. Since the Holy Spirit, through Luke, the author of Acts, says that Cornelius was devout, we cannot claim that he was irreverent.

When Holy Scripture calls him God-fearing, can we say that he was an atheist? When it says that his whole family was united with him, that they all feared and revered God, we cannot say that this was untrue. If it says that he fasted, we cannot say that he did not fast; and if it says that he prayed and was a man of prayer, we cannot say that he was not. We cannot say such things, because what is written here, I want you to understand, was written through the Holy Spirit. Human hands, pens, paper, and ink were indeed employed, but the One who moved the hand to write was not man, but the Holy Spirit Himself. The testimony is true. I would therefore like to ask myself, and I ask each of you to ask yourselves: we who are now baptized, we who have received grace—do we bear any resemblance to this man?

He is God-fearing; he is devout. The first thing the text says of him is that he was “devout.” Do we have devotion and reverence? If not toward God, do we at least show reverence toward those who are older than we are?

Do we show reverence toward our parents? Do we respect anything today, in this age in which we live? Does the student respect the teacher? Do we respect our clergy? Do we respect our elders? Irreverence has gone through the roof. People say, “He is false, and I have no reason to show him respect.” And Cornelius was not devout by himself. He had evidently passed this devotion on to his family as well: “with all his household.” Do we have devout families? Many times we are ashamed to say, “This is my son,” or, “This is my daughter,” or, “This is my wife,” or, “This is my husband.” Many times we are ashamed to say it.

Only the authorities seem able to summon us, reprimand us, and call us back to order. The reverence that ought to exist today is gone—this ordered reverence within the hierarchy of life: reverence toward Heaven and proper reverence here among ourselves. Do children respect their parents and their teachers? The commandment teaches this, and the Church also prays for parents, teachers, and others. One gave the child physical life; another helped give him spiritual life. Honour the teacher! The father brought the child into natural birth, while the spiritual luminary, the clergyman, raised him toward spiritual life. His mother gave birth to him according to the image of earthly life, while the priest brings him to rebirth for Paradise. A human being has two births.

There is birth according to the flesh and birth through divine Baptism. What did Nicodemus hear in his conversation with Christ that night, as we read in John? “Nicodemus, unless you are born from above, you cannot see the Kingdom of Heaven.” You will not be born again from your mother, but you must be born of the Spirit and of water. And who performs this ministry? Another spiritual father, one called a clergyman, a priest. Is there reverence toward priests today? People have reached such a point of spiritual delusion—and it truly is demonic—that they regard meeting a priest as a bad omen. A bad omen! But where is the human being in all this? The priestly hand carries a mighty ministry, however sinful the man himself may be. He too is human; he goes to Holy Confession and practices metanoia—repentance—and...

Nevertheless, this respect no longer exists. Are there people today who honour their parents and treat them with reverence? Where are the parents today? Are they in their children’s homes, cared for in their old age? Do children think about their parents? I am not speaking about what you do here, but down where we live in the capital, we have cast our parents aside. You may give the elderly father and mother golden spoons and every comfort, yet this will not satisfy them; their complaint and even their curse may still rest upon you. Pay as much as you like—neither doctors nor professional care will satisfy them. The old father wants his dear son to caress him; he wants to see his child and delight in his daughter-in-law. He will live only a little while longer, and he does not care if he has nothing to eat.

You all understand this perfectly well. Here we see a man who, we might say, did not yet belong to Christ; he did not know Christ and had not yet received grace. He did not possess the strength that comes through grace, and yet he performed deeds that should put us so-called Christians to shame today. He was, then, “devout and God-fearing.” Are there God-fearing people today? We fear germs, but we do not fear God. We fear infection connected with an abortion, but we do not fear the abortion itself. Is what I am saying true or not? We fear punishment, but not theft. We fear sorrow, but not the sin that causes it. We fear other people: “What will people say?” We do not have fear of God; we have fear of man. We are no longer God-fearing people. This is what we have become today!

We constantly commit sin beneath the gaze of God. For the eye of God ranges throughout the whole world, seeking those who belong to Him. Just as He sought and found Lot, and just as He sought Adam, so He seeks His own; and He also knows those who are not His. Fear God, revere God, take God into account, reckon with God. Who fears God? Who reveres Him? Who takes Him into account? Man has taken everything upon himself. He thinks that he governs everything, that he will rule, act, and arrange all things—leaving God entirely out. Paul says beautifully, in the passage we hear during Holy Matrimony, “And let the wife see that she respects her husband.” Yet the wife rushes to step on her husband’s foot so that she may keep him beneath her foot throughout their life together. Are you not ashamed?

Are you not ashamed—you who do it, the mother-in-law who advises it, the maid of honour who suggests it, and the sister standing nearby? You came so that this Mystery might be blessed, and yet the question is who will step on whom! Where does Saint Paul say such a thing? He says, “And let the wife see that she respects her husband”—that she honours him, takes him seriously, and gives him due regard. How can a household function otherwise? The wife is called to offer her own help and to supply what may be lacking beside her husband. She completes what is needed. For woman came from man, not man from woman. That is what Paul says in First Corinthians. Is it not so? Was Eve not made from Adam? Was Adam made from Eve? Was it not Eve who brought disorder into things? Was it not Eve who marred them?

If societies suffer today, they suffer because woman has been placed where she was not meant to be. A woman’s kingdom is not Parliament, the airplane, the marketplace, or the swimming pool; it is her home. There the woman is queen, guarding the place God has entrusted to her. That is true queenship. The names of such women endure into eternity, as the names of the mothers of the Saints have endured. Today mothers no longer take pride in bearing children or in raising them so that they may offer them to God. Instead, our attention has risen—or rather fallen—to many other worldly levels. This brings decline. There is no respect. We have become harsh and unyielding toward parents, bishops, and priests. We fear nothing and imagine that everything belongs to us. Yet everything depends upon God, and glory, honour, and worship must be offered to Him.

Cornelius stands out in this regard. I do not know whether you noticed the phrase I mentioned earlier: “with all his household.” He succeeded in establishing this spirit throughout his home. Today our children have slipped away from us. They do not take us seriously. Do they respect the priest or the teacher? No. Children take no one seriously. There is no respect. Today there is no Christian family—apart from certain exceptions, of course. Every rule has its exceptions, as you know, but the exception cannot define the rule. The rule today is that the family no longer truly exists. The Church in the home no longer exists. The father has ceased to represent Christ in the home. The mother has ceased to reflect the Most Holy Theotokos, and the children have ceased to resemble the Saints. Today the home has become merely a place where people come and go.

The father comes home whenever he pleases, the mother comes home whenever she pleases, and the children come home whenever they please. The house has become a place people merely pass through. Naturally, there is no fear of God. Once we had it. The family does not pray together. They do not sit down at the table together and raise their hands in prayer. They do not go to Holy Confession together, attend Church together, or receive Holy Communion together. There is no family unity, no harmony, no mutual understanding. Even among you, in the large cities, foreign customs have crept in through sons-in-law and daughters-in-law. With all this modern bustle, which can carry us across half the seas in a fraction of a second, Christianity and the beautiful tradition of Hellenism and Orthodoxy have become confused, and we have lost our bearings. That family life no longer exists. Mothers no longer labor for it either. The child leaves for school, and the mother goes to the telephone to chat with another woman, or goes out to the marketplace to talk with someone else.

Has anyone knelt down? Has any mother remained there at prayer until her knees became calloused like a goat’s? Has she prayed the Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos, imploring mercy for her burdened husband and for the treasures entrusted to her—her sons and daughters—and praying for the child she has brought into the world? These things are no longer done. Consequently, when the mother is not the pillar of the Church within the family, it is only natural for the family to be shipwrecked and for the fear of God to disappear. The child will come and dictate what is to be eaten at midday. The mother will have no say over what the family meal is to be. You will ask the pampered boy what he wants; you will ask the young lady what she wants to eat, so that she can hurry back outside. Yes, there is no fear of God. Why? Because beneath all the noisy slogans of progress, as they call it...

...the family’s catechetical formation has been buried. It is difficult to provide it today under the conditions in which we live, because one person builds within the home while those outside tear everything down. Yet if these spiritual safeguards are present, we cannot fail to see good results. The young woman and the young man may wander for a time, because youth is like influenza: it must run its course. As the doctor tells us, “It is the flu; it will last for so many days, and nothing can stop it.” But the young person will return. In former times, people knew how to nurture a child. The grandmother of Saint Nektarios of Aegina would sit with him on her knees and teach him the things of the Church. Today a mother puts the child in front of the television. “Sit and watch television so that you will not cry,” she says, while the lady does her nails so that no one will outshine her.

Abroad, these things are carefully organized to place children in front of such programs—even programs that present Satan himself—so that the children remain occupied and their mothers are free to pursue the rest of their social, domestic, or worldly concerns. Indeed, while I was a guest in one home, I saw Satan appearing in a children’s program and called out to the mother. She treated it as something entirely harmless. You have not paid attention to these things; none of us has. She leaves the child there for one hour, two hours, three hours, and the child is instructed by Judaism and by alien teachings. Such a family can never—never—be God-fearing. One day it will shut Christ outside, and as a consequence, one day the whole family will find itself shut outside Christ. But this man, Cornelius, Scripture says, was devout “with all his household.” He is a man we ought to envy.

My family today lives under grace, and yet it should envy this man. Where do you set something aside to give to others? For if we read the sixteenth chapter of First Corinthians, we find Paul saying to the Church at Corinth: “Throughout the week, set something aside. Put it away somewhere—as we might say, in the cupboard, in the kitchen, inside a cup...”

...a few drachmas. Suppose your husband leaves you two hundred, three hundred, or five hundred drachmas for today’s shopping. Spend twenty or thirty drachmas less. No one will go hungry, and no one will suffer for it. Put that amount aside, and by Sunday you will see that you have two or three hundred drachmas ready for almsgiving. When you go to Church, if you do not personally know anyone who is poor, there is the collection box of the charitable society. Its committee can take the money and provide even a bottle of milk for people in need. Who does this? Go and open the charitable society’s box in the evening. What will you find? You cannot imagine. Often there is nothing; at other times there are a few tiny coins—five, ten, or twenty drachmas. There is no organized charity, no regular almsgiving. A person today receives ten thousand drachmas...

...and should say, “I will give ten percent.” Shall I become like a Jew or a Pharisee and tithe? Then let me give at least ten percent, if not twenty or thirty. He does not understand that by doing this he brings a blessing upon what remains. God may preserve him from sickness, from damage to his machinery, or from some other misfortune. He does not consider this. He does not realize that God is waiting for a response from man. God gives him money and expects him to return something from what he has received. Man does not understand that mercy shown to others draws down the mercy of God. There is no organized charity. If there is no almsgiving in the home, do not expect mercy from God. Christ has said, “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.” Do you bear this in mind? Here is a man who possessed these virtues even though he was not yet a Christian. Yet you have no relationship with the law of the Gospel and no connection with spiritual theology.

Early in the morning a person can spend thirty-five drachmas on cigarettes, more on coffee, sweets, ice cream, and one thing after another; but for charity, not even a small coin. To show your love, your concern, and your compassion, read the Apostle and see how he expresses it: “To the weak I became as weak.” And there are many weak and needy people. Sadly, young people have even dared to tell me, “I do not know anyone poor.” Do not tell me that. Ask your neighbor. Ask the Church, which knows.

Today there are special sections in supermarkets for food for dogs and cats, while there are human beings who do not have a glass of milk. There are people who cannot afford an aspirin to bring down their fever. There are families unable to keep a roof over their children’s heads because landlords will not accept them when they have many children, and they often find themselves cast out. Yes, even in the fullness of the twentieth century, such things exist. How many examples do we need? And beyond our own country there is foreign missionary work among Africans, Asians, and other peoples. Is money not needed in order to preach Christ? Almsgiving is not only material; it is also spiritual. Have you ever contributed anything to missionary work?

Have you ever given a thousand drachmas to help send a priest there so that Africans might become Christians? Have you ever sent a thousand drachmas so that an African there might receive Baptism? Have you done so? Where is this charity? For this reason, Cornelius will judge us one day. He was a man of the Old Testament, yet he will stand as a witness for the prosecution against us who live under the New Testament, under the Gospel. In any event, let us continue: “And he prayed to God continually.” He was a man of prayer. Who taught him this prayer? Who gave it to him? Man was created by God, and the human soul is directed toward God and continually seeks Him. Man ought to be like that flower called the sunflower—I do not know whether you are familiar with it.

It resembles the sun. At night it bows its head and sleeps. As soon as it sees the sun, it raises its head and follows throughout the day the sun that gives it light. Then, of course, it lowers its head again. This is how man ought to be. If trees, plants, and flowers acknowledge their God and turn toward Him, does man not know that something higher exists? Does he not need to pray, to thank God for everything God provides before he can ask, and to implore Him for whatever lies beyond his own power? And yet he does not do it. As I told you on the first evening, prayer has no place in the schedule of modern European man. It simply is not there. Why? He knows when he will get up, how long he will spend dressing, when he will return, how long he will spend shaving, and how much time he will spend with his wife, his child, his home, and everything else. But he does not know how much time he will give to prayer.

“I will pray now,” he says. He makes some caricature of the sign of the Cross from a distance, his wife crosses herself, and that is all. But Cornelius “prayed continually.” And so he saw the vision of which I am speaking. In the vision he saw the angel, who came and said to him, “Cornelius.”

“Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.” Do you hear these words? The angel informs him that his prayers and alms have reached the presence of God. He now has assurance that his prayers have arrived there. We do not possess such assurance—whether our prayers have reached God, whether we have ever truly given alms, or whether those alms have reached Him—because our prayers and almsgiving are mixed with foreign motives. We pray when we are in need. When we need nothing, we do not pray. We make a single sign of the Cross for everything. And then God could say to us, “Ah, now that you need Me, you remember Me!”

What an ugly state of affairs! Consequently, such prayers are not accepted. True prayers are those offered to God at all times, in good times and bad, while leaving Him to arrange the outcome according to what is truly beneficial for man. Here we have an answer from the heavenly record: “Your prayers and your almsgiving have reached here.” Our own alms often do not reach there because they come from stolen money, from wealth acquired through injustice. Whether we give in order to be seen or to place someone under obligation, our offering does not come from our honest surplus or from honorable labor. Much of what we give—even to the Church, for holy icons, charitable works, and similar things—is not recorded in Heaven. It does not reach Heaven and cannot withstand the justice of God. It is counterfeit, mixed with foreign matter...

This is why assurance is needed. The angel came and told him, “Your alms and your prayer have reached Heaven.” Someone might then say, “Blessed Cornelius! Since they have reached Heaven, that settles it. You are destined for Paradise. Since your works, your goodness, and your whole manner of life have been esteemed by Heaven, sail peacefully into Paradise.” But as you will see, Cornelius is not yet ready for Paradise. Indeed, Cornelius is not yet ready for Paradise. Listen to what the angel tells him: “They have ascended as a memorial before God. And now send men to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter. He is lodging with a certain Simon, a tanner, whose house is...”

“...by the sea.” What does this mean? The angel tells him, “Send two of your men to Joppa and ask for a man named Simon, who is called Peter. He is staying with a tanner by the sea. Have him come and tell you what you must do to be saved.” Your almsgiving and prayers are good, but salvation is not contained in them by themselves. As we sometimes say, there is no such thing as a work that saves in itself. Where Christ is, there is salvation. I will give you a definition—and I will repeat it many times so that you may fix it firmly in your minds: a person’s works secure him a place in Paradise.

A place in Paradise. Do you understand what I mean? Imagine that you have a six-room penthouse waiting for you in Paradise, yet you have no key to enter it and must sit outside at the gate. Do you understand this great matter? This is the position of good people who have performed many good works in their lives but do not have Christ. Christ is the key. “I am the door. If anyone enters through Me, he will go in and out.” Man cannot enter by himself. Therefore, together with the good works we perform, we must take Christ seriously. We must take seriously His Church, His people, and the Mysteries...

...for these are what give eternal value to the rest of our good conduct. Thus, I repeat: a person’s good works secure him a place, but not entrance. Christ is the entrance through which you go in to find the place corresponding to your works. If there were young people here—or, sadly, even certain older people—we could ask them about this. We know that racetracks and stadiums have numbered seats. People pay very dearly for them, yet sometimes they remain outside. Perhaps they did not enter in time, perhaps they did not arrive at the proper hour, or perhaps the crowd was too great. They cannot use the numbered ticket for which they paid on the black market. Someone else may be sitting in their seat while they...

...were expected inside but remained outside. That is how it is. Christ is the One who opens the road to the Kingdom of Heaven. He wants a person to possess a good soul, but first of all to belong to Christ: first a brother of Christ, first a child of God, first a kinsman of the Father. To enter the Kingdom of Heaven, notice the word used in these texts: “inherit.” The Kingdom of Heaven is not payment for services rendered; it is not a man’s daily wage. I cannot give away a pair of slippers that do not fit me and exchange them for Paradise. I cannot give away some food that would have spoiled by tomorrow and exchange it for Paradise.

You are called to inherit. Who receives an inheritance? Laborers, slaves, hired servants? No. Brothers, children, and relatives. You must therefore become a kinsman of Christ, because the Kingdom belongs to the Father. “Come, inherit the Kingdom of My Father, prepared from the foundation of the world.” For me to inherit the Kingdom, I must be related to God. You hear people say that all human beings are children of God. No, that is mistaken! Human beings are not automatically children of God. What are they? His creatures, His handiwork, those whom He has made—but not yet His children. How do they become children of God? “As many as received Him”—whom? Christ—“to them He gave the authority to become children of God.”

A person may have no relationship with Christ at all. He may blaspheme Christ, have no regard for His Gospel, never go to His Church, show no respect for His clergy, and make no use of the Mysteries. How, then, can he be a brother of Christ and a child of God? To say, “Our Father, who art in heaven,” you must be a brother of Christ. “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ”; “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him”; and, “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren.” I must be a brother of Christ in order to be a child of God. Some people should not even say the Our Father; and when it is said in the Church, they ought to go outside, because they do not believe it at all and have no relationship with Christ. The Kingdom of Heaven, then, is inherited—and it truly is a kingdom. When a king dies, do ordinary people receive his kingdom? No, the princes inherit it. That is why Christians are royal children.

And when does someone become a royal child? When our Adamic blood is changed and the blood of Christ is placed within us. This is why Holy Communion is necessary and must be received continually: so that our blood may be changed, so that we may become royal children and thus children of God. Christ is the Son and heir by nature. We are His brothers by grace and, consequently, children of God by grace. He is “the only-begotten Son of God.” This is why we need the Church, why we need the Holy Chalice, why we need Holy Communion, why we need a spiritual father, and why all these things are necessary. God seeks to make us royal children through the transfusion of the blood of that King. Otherwise, how could we have a claim to the Kingdom tomorrow? The Kingdom is not a wage or reward earned by merit; it is an inheritance. It is like a man dying in America and...

leaving an estate of one hundred thousand dollars. The newspapers announce that the heirs of a certain man are being sought, and people come forward from this village and that city, saying, “Here we are; we are his relatives.” A person produces the documents proving his kinship, goes there, and receives the inheritance left to him. This is how matters stand with the Kingdom of Heaven. Our works determine the place prepared for us, so that we do not travel into eternity third class or economy class, but in luxury—even the greatest luxury! Yet we need Christ, who can present those works and say, “I did this, and you did that,” and so forth. The blood of Jesus Christ is what presents us before God the Father and before the justice of God. This is what this man’s story teaches us. Yet the angel says to him, “Cornelius...”

“Send word for that man to come and tell you what you must do.” The next day, two of Cornelius’s servants and one soldier—three men in all—rose and set out for Joppa. That place still exists today and is in Catholic hands. I have even photographed it on slides, for I was counted worthy to go there. It lies beside the Mediterranean Sea, where this event took place. “The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city,” as the soldiers and the others were approaching the city, “Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.”

Peter went up to the housetop at about twelve noon to pray. “Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat.” He was hungry, but the meal was not yet ready. “While they were preparing” the food, Peter went up to pray. This is another great lesson! The saints never left an hour unused. We would pick up the newspaper, cross one short leg over the other, and wait for the meal to be ready. Or we would turn on the television and let it instruct us with all its clever talk, or do something else—I do not know what. But Peter did not. He prayed during that time. And what happened? You see, when a person prays, he gives God the opportunity to speak to him. And what did God show him at that moment?

“A trance fell upon him, and he saw heaven opened.” Heaven opened, and something like a great sheet descended toward him, held by its four corners. Inside that sheet were all kinds of beasts, reptiles, and animals, both clean and unclean, according to the distinctions of the Mosaic Law: “all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.” Then a voice came to him and said, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” When he saw animals of every kind, some of them were unclean and forbidden by the Mosaic Law. He took courage and said, “By no means, Lord!” Impossible—I will not do this. “For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” I will never eat such things.

The voice answered him again: “What God has cleansed, you must not call common.” In other words, “Do not call unclean what I have cleansed.” God was teaching him a lesson. The men coming from Cornelius were Gentiles, and Peter was about to go among Gentiles. Peter still held the prejudice that Christ had come only for the Jews, the circumcised, while everyone else remained outside. So God instructed him: “Take heed: I cleanse those people too.” This was how He prepared Peter beforehand. In any event, the vision was shown to him three times, and then the sheet was taken up and disappeared. “Now while Peter wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen might mean”—what, then, was this thing I saw?

The men sent by Cornelius had asked where Simon’s house was and now stood at the gate. After asking here and there, they arrived outside the courtyard gate and called out, inquiring, “Is a man named Peter staying here?” At that very moment, the Holy Spirit spoke to Peter and said, “Behold, three men are seeking you outside the door. Arise, go down, and go with them, doubting nothing.” Peter might have said, “I will not go. They are Gentiles, while we are Jews, and Christ belongs to us.” But the Holy Spirit allowed no such objection: “I have sent them.” Here, for those who read and are troubled by the theories of those who diminish the Holy Spirit...

who claim that the Holy Spirit is not God, we see Him here speaking personally and with divine authority in the Church: “I sent them.” You may use this passage as an answer. Peter went downstairs, came to the door, and said to the men, “Behold, I am he whom you seek. For what reason have you come?” They replied, “Cornelius the centurion, a righteous man who fears God and is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to hear words from you.” In other words, Cornelius the centurion had received a command to send for Peter.

He had been commanded to send for Peter and invite him. Peter said, “Come in.” He brought them inside, they ate together, and they stayed there that night, since they evidently had no time to return to Caesarea, or were too weary for the journey. They set out the following day. The next morning, some of the brethren learned that Peter was going to Caesarea, where the people were Gentiles and strangers to the Jewish religion. Thinking that a trap might have been laid for him and that he might come to harm, they decided to accompany him. “On the next day Peter went away with them, and some brethren from Joppa accompanied him. And the following day they entered Caesarea.” Meanwhile, since Cornelius had sent the men two days earlier, he made preparations and notified many of his relatives and others who shared his way of thinking...

and he waited with them to see who this man was whom God wished to bring to him and what new message he would give them. “Cornelius was waiting for them, and had called together his relatives and close friends.” “As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, fell down at his feet, and worshiped him. But Peter lifted him up, saying, ‘Stand up; I myself am also a man.’” As Peter talked with him, they went inside, where all the others were waiting to hear the message God wished to give them. Peter said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to associate with or visit anyone of another nation.” You know, he said, that we Jews do not maintain such fellowship with people of other nations.

But God has shown me that I should call no man common or unclean. That is why, when I was summoned, I came without objection. So now, tell me why you have called me here. Cornelius then began to speak: “Four days ago, at this very hour, I was fasting; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house.” Four days of fasting—do you hear?—and at the ninth hour he was praying in his home.

“A man stood before me in bright clothing and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms have been remembered before God. Send, therefore, to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter. He is staying in the house of Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. When he comes, he will speak to you.’” He will come and tell you what you must do to be saved. Everything you have done is good and blessed, but it does not by itself give you the Kingdom of God. You will not see Paradise through these works alone. They create the conditions for God to have mercy on you. But if you yourself are unwilling to receive His mercy, they will remain powerless, like blackened, dead coals.

“Therefore I sent to you immediately. You have done well to come. Now, then, we are all present before God”—not merely before you—“to hear all the things commanded you by God.” When you encounter a godly man, it is as though you encounter God, for now God will speak to us through him. And Peter opened his mouth and spoke to them: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son.” He told them what the prophets had proclaimed: that Christ had come, that He had suffered at the hands of the Jews, that they crucified Him, that He died, was buried, rose again, and now proclaims metanoia—repentance—to the people, and through Him the world is saved. You may be good and devout, but to be saved you need that essential key called Christ. I do not know how many of you are Christians.

How many of you are good people? I want to believe that this describes most of my listeners, both those here tonight and those who will hear the recording I am making, which you will carry to the ends of the earth. But how many of you have a relationship with Christ, who gives true value to all your goodness? So, in conclusion, let me say this: never rest complacently in your good works. Isaiah says something dreadful, and I would not mention it if you had not already heard it in the prayer of Holy Unction. At one point, he says to God, seeking His mercy, “All our righteousnesses are like filthy rags.” Do you know what that means? It means that all the good things we do...

without Christ are like a filthy cloth soaked in blood. That is what he says. People often perform good works for their own glory. Most do them to satisfy their ego. If their pride and ambition are not gratified, if they receive no applause, and if they do not also wish to quiet the conscience that rebukes them, they will not perform those good works. Once, it is said, a bishop in Alexandria, Egypt, asked the Greek community to contribute toward building a Greek school where Greek children could learn their language and letters. There were millionaires there, yet he collected only a very small amount—about five thousand dollars—and he was deeply disappointed.

He had informed them of the project and explained why he needed their contributions. Then he tried something else. He said, “Whoever gives to this work will have his name written on a large plaque according to the amount he contributes, in descending order. If I give one thousand pounds and you give five hundred, my name will appear first, yours second, and the others below.” What happened? Within ten days, he collected enough money to build three schools. In any event, the school was built, and a day was appointed for its inauguration, the blessing of water, and the unveiling of the plaque. All those people were invited...

who had sent enormous sums so that their names would occupy the highest places on the plaque. The square outside filled with limousines. The blessing of water took place, the bishop said what he needed to say, and he had a child pull aside the curtain. Everyone craned forward to see where his name appeared and who had contributed the most. It was all out of vainglory. But there were no names on the plaque. Instead, the bishop had written: “This school was founded, built, and completed, and from this day begins its work, through the vainglory of the Greek community of this city.” They were crushed. Their love had not built the school; their vainglory had. They lowered their heads and went away.

There are people like that. They establish great institutions, but Christ is absent from their minds. I know people—I will not name them because they are well known—who support entire secondary schools. These schools serve children and benefit society, and it is good that they do so. But those benefactors have no relationship with Christ or with the Church: no Holy Confession, no metanoia—repentance—and no Holy Communion. Their works fall into emptiness. Once, at lunchtime, a wealthy merchant treated a friend to a meal at a restaurant. After they had eaten, he said, “Come with me. I want to show you something that will make you happy.” He took him in his car, and they drove outside the city.

Directly opposite them was a beautiful little hill, and on it an impressive large building was under construction. They stopped. The man showing it to his friend was a factory owner. He said, “I am building that.” “What is it, and why are you building it?” “It will have one hundred beds.” “But what is it?” “I am making it into a sanatorium,” he replied. “Why?” “So that workers who become ill can come here and receive treatment.” His friend answered, “You scoundrel! Why do you not give this money to your workers as proper wages? You steal their wages and then build them a sanatorium!”

Give them better food and milk to drink.

You have taken it into your head to make them consumptives, so that afterward you can heal them through your charity. Do you understand? There are many such cases, and God sees a great deal. So take heed. I do not know which category you belong to. I want you to be good people, but I also want you to become Christians. If you want God to make use of all your goodness, and if you want it to bear a signature and seal that will stand in the Kingdom of Heaven, then become Christians as well. Return to the Church, repent, and confess the multitude of your sins—not merely the most obvious ones, saying, “I have neither killed nor stolen.” There are many sins. I wrote a little book containing six hundred sins—six hundred! And I have barely scratched the surface. Cleanse yourselves of them, and then you will have a place in the Kingdom of Heaven. I hope in God that

He will grant us another evening to speak further, so that we may give a true account of how a person must think if he wishes to be with Christ beyond the grave. That is all for this evening.

Μπορούμε να πούμε εμείς, καθ’ ην στιγμήν τον λέει θεοφοβούμενο, να πούμε εμείς ότι ήταν άθεος; Δεν μπορεί, καθ’ ην στιγμήν λέει ότι η οικογένειά του όλοι ήταν μαζί του και φοβούνταν όλοι τον Θεό, εσέβοντο τον Θεό, να πούμε εμείς ότι δεν συνέβαινε αυτό. Δεν μπορούμε να πούμε ότι αυτός ήταν νηστεύων και να λέμε ότι δεν ήταν νηστεύων, ή ήταν δεόμενος, άνθρωπος προσευχής, και να μην ήτανε. Δεν μπορούμε να τα πούμε, διότι αυτά που είναι γραμμένα, θέλω να ξέρετε, είναι γραμμένα διά Πνεύματος Αγίου. Ναι μεν χρησιμοποιήθησαν χέρια ανθρώπινα, μολύβια, χαρτιά, μελάνια, αλλά αυτοί που εκίνησαν πίσω το χέρι αυτό να γράψει δεν ήσαν άνθρωποι, αλλά ήταν αυτό το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, η πληροφορία αληθής. Θα ήθελα, λοιπόν, εγώ να ρωτήσω τον εαυτό μου και εσείς τον εαυτό σας: εμείς οι βαφτισμένοι τώρα, της χάριτος άνθρωποι, έχουμε καμία ομοιότητα με τον άνθρωπο αυτόν;

Δηλαδή, είναι θεοσεβής, είναι ευσεβής. Πρώτον λέει «ευσεβής» ή μετά «ευσεβής» και μία. Έχουμε εμείς ευσέβεια; Αν όχι προς τον Θεό, προς τον μεγαλύτερό μας έχουμε ευσέβεια;

Τον κάνουμε πάντα επίσης αμαρτία με το όνομα του Θεού. Διότι το μάτι του Θεού περιέρχεται όλο τον κόσμο για να μπορεί ποιος του είναι δικός. Όπως ανέτρεξε και βρήκε τον Λωτ, όπως ανέτρεξε και βρήκε τον Αδάμ, έτσι ανατρέχει να βρει τους δικούς του και ξέρει και τους άλλους ποιοι δεν είναι δικοί του. Φοβού τον Θεό, σέβου τον Θεό, λογάριασε τον Θεό, υπολόγισε τον Θεό. Ποιος τον φοβάται τον Θεό, ποιος τον σέβεται, ποιος τον λογαριάζει; Όλα τα έχει μεταφέρει επάνω. Αυτός νομίζει ότι τα διοικεί, αυτός θα εξουσιάζει, αυτός θα κάνει, αυτός θα κανονίζει· μόνο τον Θεό. Λέγει ωραιότατα ο Παύλος, και το ακούμε την ημέρα του γάμου, «Ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἵνα φοβῆται τὸν ἄνδρα». Και σπεύδει η γυνή να πατήσει τον άντρα, για να τον έχει πατημένο πάντοτε σε όλη τη ζωή. Μα δεν ντρέπεσαι;

Ειδήσεις, παρότι υπάρχουνε χρόνοι σήμερα εμπειρικοθόαιων, που υπάρχουνε ειδικές πτέρυγες για τροφές των σκύλων και των γάτων στα σούπερ μάρκετ και υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που δεν έχουν ένα ποτήρι γάλα. Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που δεν έχουν να πάρουν μια ασπιρίνη να τους πέσει ο πυρετός. Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που δεν μπορούν να κρατήσουν τα παιδιά τους μέσα, διότι δεν τους βάζουν οι μεγάλοι, διότι έχουν πολλά παιδιά και βρίσκονται πολλές φορές εξορισμένοι έξω. Σίγουρα, εν πλήρει 20ώ αιώνι, υπάρχουν αυτά τα πράγματα. Πόσο να θέλουμε το παράδειγμα. Αυτό που είναι εκεί είναι περισσότερο εξωτερικό, δεν ξέρουν οι άνθρωποι ποιος το δεχτείς από τα αριστερός. Είπατε ότι υπάρχει η ιεραποστολή στο εξωτερικό, μέσα στους μαύρους, στους κίτρινους, στους άλλους. Δεν έχουμε ανάγκη από χρήματα για να διδάξει το Χριστό; Γιατί η ελεημοσύνη δεν είναι μόνο υλική, είναι και πνευματική. Έχετε λοιπόν ποτέ κίνητρα μέσα στην ιεραποστολή;

Στο δώμα, στις δώδεκα περίπου το μεσημέρι, να προσευχηθεί ο Πέτρος. «Ἐγένετο δὲ πρόσπεινος καὶ ἤθελε γεύσασθαι». Πεινούσε, αλλά το φαΐ δεν είχε γίνει ακόμα. «Παρασκευαζόντων δὲ ἐκείνων» το φαΐ, ο Πέτρος ανέβη να προσευχηθεί. Άλλο μάθημα αυτό μεγάλο, ε! Δεν άφηναν οι Άγιοι άνθρωποι ώρα ανεκμετάλλευτη. Εμείς θα πάρουμε την εφημερίδα και θα βάλουμε την κοντή ποδάρα πάνω στην άλλη και να περιμένουμε να γίνει το φαγητό. Ή θα ανοίξουμε τηλεόραση να μας διδάξει, να μας πει τις εξυπνάδες του, ή δεν ξέρω τι άλλο μπορεί να κάνουμε. Όχι. Την ώρα αυτή προσεύχεται. Με τι γίνεται; Γιατί, ξέρετε, όταν ο άνθρωπος προσεύχεται, δίνει την ευχέρεια στο Θεό να του μιλήσει. Και τι του δείχνει ο Θεός εκείνη την ώρα;

Του απαντά πάλι και του λέει: «Ἃ ὁ Θεὸς ἐκαθάρισε, σὺ μὴ κοίνου». Αυτά που, λέει, καθάρισα εγώ, μη λες ότι είναι ακάθαρτα. Του κάνει μάθημα τώρα. Αυτοί που έρχονται από τον Κορνήλιο είναι ειδωλολάτρες. Θα πάει ο Πέτρος στους ειδωλολάτρες. Ο Πέτρος είχε την πρόληψη ότι ο Χριστός ήρθε μόνο για τους Εβραίους, τους περιτμημένους. Αυτοί είναι έξω. Και του κάνει μάθημα και του λέει: «Πρόσεξε, και εκείνους τους καθαρίζω εγώ». Αυτή την προπαιδεία του κάνει σε αυτή την περίπτωση. Εν πάση περιπτώσει, αυτό του το έδειξε τρεις φορές και σηκώθηκε σαν να 'ταν σεντόνι και έφυγε. «Ὡς δὲ ἐν ἑαυτῷ διηπόρει ὁ Πέτρος τί ἂν εἴη τὸ ὅραμα ὃ εἶδε». Λοιπόν, τι ήταν αυτό που είδα;
