Summary

Prayer is humanity’s unique privilege of speaking with God, yet people often seek other solutions before using this powerful spiritual means. The story of Tobit and the Archangel Raphael illustrates that angels carry human prayers before God and may be sent to assist those who pray. Cain and Abel show that prayer and sacrifice began with the first human family, but God receives offerings according to the sincerity and quality of the worshipper’s heart.

In our last talk, if you remember, the imprisonment of Peter led us to speak about prayer and its effects. Prayer truly is a means—or rather, a weapon—in human hands, and it is what sets man apart from all the rest of creation before the Creator. No other creature has this privilege; man alone can speak with God. Yet, as you may know from your own experience, we do not give prayer

first place, nor do we resolve our problems, whether material or spiritual, through prayer. We look for other ways and other means of meeting these needs. We do not use this wonderworking means at our disposal as much as we could for our own benefit. A great Father of our Church, Saint Gregory the Theologian—a learned man, not simply an ascetic or some monk—says: “We must remember God more often than we breathe.” In other words, between breathing, which is necessary to sustain the body, and prayer, he gives prayer precedence over breathing. A person who does not pray is spiritually dead. Prayer is the oxygen of the human soul. A person who prays, who has a spiritual relationship with his Creator, feels different. This is not a matter of theory, but of praxis, of the active spiritual life. When someone chooses to put it into practice, he will discover for himself that he truly feels at peace; he feels different. Just when he becomes confused and disoriented and comes to a standstill, he sees a light again. He sees a little path opening before him; he sees the situation beginning to change—

the gloom and darkness surrounding it begin to lift. But I repeat: few Christians, and few people in general, know this secret. Everyone else suffers. If people prayed, they would not have problems that remained without a solution.

If anyone looks closely at the life of Christ Himself, he will see that Christ taught this by His life as man. He was always at prayer, and He resolved every matter through prayer. Before undertaking something of great importance—for example, choosing the Apostles, appointing them as His disciples, and taking them with Him—

He prayed throughout the entire night. Before going to His Passion, He withdrew alone to the Garden of Gethsemane and prayed. The Evangelists also tell us that He spent the whole day in His public ministry, teaching the people and guiding them toward what is right. Afterward, however, He would withdraw and go, so to speak, to draw strength. A human being is like a reservoir—but from where will he be filled? If a reservoir has nothing stored within it, what can it give? We do not draw strength; day after day we exhaust ourselves without being replenished. If a person wants to draw strength, he must draw it from there. He cannot draw it from anywhere else; he cannot turn elsewhere. Human beings do not have the power to help us fully. That is precisely why, so often,

we tell another person our complaint, our pain, and our need. We feel the need for someone to lean on, yet that person cannot truly provide the help we need. He may, of course, offer us a comforting word—I do not deny that. A person feels the need for this and desires it, especially during the difficult moments of life, whether the trial is physical, material, or spiritual. He feels the need to lean on someone. But think: if one human being can receive comfort from another, who often has nothing to give him, how much more comfort will he receive by standing before God? We Orthodox Christians ought to make far greater use of prayer, for we would be greatly benefited. We can appear not only before the King; we can also approach the Queen,

and we can approach the princes, the ministers of God—that is, the Saints—who are ready to help and stand beside us. Many people have resolved their problems in this way. Others have resolved problems that had burdened them for years through prayer. Many can tell you this from their own experience.

I do not know whether you too have had such experiences, or whether you have ever considered this, because someone may say, “But do I not pray?” I do not know whether you pray. You may simply be filling the air with words; whether you are truly praying, I do not know. The two are different. Certain conditions are necessary if a person is to take his place in prayer, truly pray, and receive results—an answer to his prayer.

Otherwise, it is like a letter to which you will receive no reply.

Nothing comes of it. The point is to send a letter and receive an answer. I once told you, if you remember, about a little boy who wrote to his uncle in America, asking him to send a little money so that he could buy a book he wanted for his mother, poor child. But his uncle did not answer. After some time, even the boy’s mother became worried, because the uncle had always been so dependable. The boy had written the letter to his uncle in his notebook and had addressed the envelope, but he forgot to tear the sheet from the notebook and put it inside. He sent his uncle an empty envelope. When the uncle saw it, he thought, “The boy is playing a joke on me.” How could he have imagined what had actually happened? The very same thing happens to many of us in prayer. We may indeed...

pray, saying, “My God, help me. Most Holy Theotokos, help me with this or that. My Saint, help me in this difficult moment; help me with this need”—but our heart is not in it. The heart is occupied elsewhere. It desires other things and thinks about other things. A person simply wants the Saints, the Theotokos, and God to be servants of his needs, while he himself never wishes

to bring his own thoughts and desires into agreement with them.

Many people have spoken about prayer; that is, they have offered their judgment and, in a few words, given us the essence of prayer. For example, a great man of the desert, Saint Nilus the Ascetic, says: “Prayer is the communion of the nous with God.” The nous, the spiritual intellect, speaks with God, for one can pray even with one’s mouth closed. And the divine John Chrysostom says: “Prayer is the work of angels, and it surpasses even their dignity.” Prayer surpasses even the work of the angels. The angels, of course, praise God continually. They do not pray to God to ask for anything, because they lack nothing. They are spirits: they neither become ill nor have material needs or need the means to sustain themselves. They praise God. And it is certainly a great thing to praise and glorify God without seeking anything for oneself.

We may always pray with some personal interest in mind, whereas the prayer of the angels is higher. Yet the prayer of a believer—a person who reveres God, takes God seriously, and gives Him His rightful place—is regarded as higher still. Another great master of prayer, Saint John Climacus, is so called because he wrote a book of thirty discourses arranged like a ladder, with one virtue following another. When a person succeeds in climbing this ladder of virtues, he reaches his destination. He says, “Prayer is the mother of tears.” This is true, and blessed is the person who can shed tears in prayer.

It is the bearer of divine love. When God sees a person praying, prayer draws divine love upon him. It is the forgiveness of our sins. In prayer, we ask God to forgive our sins. Someone may say, “Then is Holy Confession unnecessary?” That is not what he means. He means the sins that escape our notice. A human being, as a finite creature, cannot retain the entire record of the sins committed throughout his life. He cannot even retain the sins of a single day or a single hour. For sins are not only the coarse things of which we say, “I have not killed; I have not stolen.” Sins against God are a subtle matter, like a cardiogram whose fine details only

an experienced physician can read. In the same way, before God there is a kind of spiritual cardiogram of our thoughts, words, and deeds. For a person sins in word, deed, and thought. Concerning the sins we fail to perceive, we say: “Help me, my God. Forgive me also for whatever I do not remember, whatever I am unable to declare and reveal in my confession.” That is what this means. Prayer is a bridge that carries a person unharmed through the snares of the evil one. You find yourself in a difficult situation and think that everything has closed in upon you and is bound to end badly, that there is no other possible outcome. But offer one fervent prayer to God with faith; speak about it to the One who has the power and ability to act,

and prayer carries you through, he says. It is a bridge that bears you across unharmed. Just when you thought you would be crushed and utterly broken, it carries you safely through. Afterward, you marvel and say: “How did this happen? It seems like a dream; it seems impossible. I expected a completely different outcome, yet things turned out entirely differently.” Prayer is a heavenly work. Just as there is prayer in Heaven, man has the right to pray from the earth; and the person who prays on earth continues the heavenly work offered to God by the bodiless spirits. Prayer is the food of angels—the food of angels. The angels rejoice in carrying the prayers of human beings. I do not know whether you have ever read the Book of Tobit in the Old Testament.

Tobit was a righteous man with a family. He was wealthy, but at one point he became poor. His poverty followed an illness, for he became blind after leaving his house to go and give alms when someone asked for help. A bird above him dropped its dung, which fell into his eyes, and the man became blind. He was blinded while performing an act of charity. Because he had become blind, over the years circumstances reduced him to poverty. He could not move about, and his family suffered. When he was wealthy, he had lent some money to a man who lived far away, and now, being blind, he could not go himself.

His son was only about fourteen, fifteen, or sixteen years old and could not undertake such a long journey alone to that distant country to collect the money, which would have helped the family through this difficult time. So Tobit prayed to God for help. Then one day a gentleman appeared and said to him, “What do you need? I am at your service. I heard that you are blind and suffering. How can I help you?” Tobit replied, “Thank you, my good man, but how could you help me?” “Anything you wish. Is there nowhere you can send me? Is there nothing I can do to help you? Whatever I can do for you, I will.” Tobit explained the situation and asked, “Can you accompany my son to a certain place to collect some money owed to me, so that I may have enough to live on for a few years?” “Gladly.” So the man took the boy and led him there. And not only did he take him there—

after some time, when they had begun to think the boy was lost, that they had lost their child and that his companion was an evil man, and all such things, he returned with the boy married and with a great dowry—enough to support the elder for another hundred years.

The young man returned, and he and his father thought of thanking this man, who was now preparing to leave. They also wanted to offer him something from what they had brought back: from the money that had been repaid, which the father had lent, and from the large dowry the son had received. So they invited him to a private meal, and the blind father, with his son present, said...

“We have no words with which to thank you for what you have done. May God reward you. Yet we feel a need to show our gratitude. Please accept a small sum, as a token of thanks for the good you have done for us.” Then the man opened his mouth and said to them, “I am the Archangel Raphael, sent by God to minister to you in this time of need. I am the one who carried your prayers to God, and He sent me to help you in this necessity. May the blessing of God be with you.” And he vanished from before their eyes. The angels receive the prayers of mankind and carry them before the throne of God. The whole spiritual world around us is at work for our sake, and each person receives according to his capacity to receive.

Even as we speak here, if we had a special instrument, a kind of radio, we would discern that all around us other words are crossing through the air. Who knows how many voices, how much music, and how many different subjects are passing around us? We move within them, but we do not have the proper receiver to pick up the BBC, Athens, foreign stations, or Russia. Yet when we have the proper receiver, built by a craftsman in obedience to the laws of nature, it performs this marvel. What is happening? Where is that whole world? It is the same with the spiritual dimension of man. As Paul said here on the Areopagus in Athens to our forefathers...

“In Him we live and move and have our being.” We are in God. Can we not perceive Him? We can, if our souls possess spiritual sensitivity. But sin hardens the human soul, so that it can no longer perceive. I do not know whether you have ever considered the writing used by the blind. The blind read by touch. Through touch they find pages, texts, chapters, and all manner of things; they even become university scholars through touch. But what they always take care to do, and what they always fear, is to keep their hands sensitive and not allow them to become calloused. For when their hands become calloused, they cannot perceive the raised letters. Their hands must remain as sensitive as possible. The human soul must be the same, yet the soul becomes hardened from the moment sin enters in.

Sin begins with small things: a little falsehood, a dirty joke, something provocative, an obscenity, a flirtation, or whatever it may be. Then the cloven-footed devil begins to set his feet within the soul and harden it. The soul can no longer perceive the things of Heaven or grasp these lofty meanings. Therefore, the more carefully a person guards against sin, the more deeply he is moved by divine things and the better he understands the answers God gives. Prayer is the science of sciences. Another Father says that, although man can learn everything else in life, the one thing he will never completely master is how to pray perfectly.

A person can never attain complete perfection in prayer. It is a matter of struggle and habit. We have spoken about prayer, which of course has many forms. Prayer does not simply mean leaving my work, taking up the Book of Hours, the prayer book, or some booklet, and beginning to read. That alone is not prayer. Prayer has many aspects, and every person can pray while doing his work, without leaving it, and receive the good fruits that flow from prayer. In any case, prayer is called the food of the angels, the joy of the righteous, and the fountain and table of the soul: it refreshes the soul. I do not know whether you have ever experienced what I am about to describe. At some moment, your sorrow may become so great that you begin to pray and weep, unable to hold back your tears.

Although you might expect those tears to crush you, they instead bring you relief. The soul feels different, as though it had bathed, as though it had just come out of a steam bath. How do we feel after coming out of a bath or a steam bath? That is how the soul feels. It is a strange thing. Prayer, he says, is the fountain and table of the soul; the soul is nourished by it. It is the strengthening of the heart. The heart grows strong; it does not easily become afraid or tremble before certain events. We say, “My heart is trembling.” But it no longer trembles; the heart is strengthened. Prayer is the light of the nous, the spiritual intellect. Listen to these definitions: the light of the nous. Prayer illumines a person with its radiance. When someone stands in prayer, God sees him.

You see, it is as though God shines a great light upon him. If you wish to see an image of this, look to the Transfiguration of our Christ. When He ascended Mount Tabor and prayed, His whole being shone, because He was filled with radiance. So it is with us. When a person prays, he too is illumined. God...

God said to Ananias concerning Saul, “Behold, he is praying.” God sees the person who prays, because man turns his eyes toward God, and God looks upon man. When Nathanael was in the garden beneath the fig tree, Christ saw him. Before Philip called him, Christ said, “I saw you under the fig tree.” What were you doing beneath the fig tree? He was praying.

Where was his prayer going? To Christ Himself. Thus they are united; each beholds the other. It is like looking toward the sun and being filled with its light, because you turn your attention, your desire, and your heart toward it. You know the plant called the sunflower. Have you seen how it moves throughout the day while the sun is shining? It looks toward the sun and follows it all day long.

When the sun withdraws in the evening, the flower closes itself up. So it is with man. Man was created for God, and he feels entirely different when he turns toward Him. But I repeat: man does not know this mystery, he does not make use of it, and so, as we commonly say, we drown in a spoonful of water. We are overwhelmed by next to nothing. Satan can even drive us to suicide.

Yet with a single prayer, turning toward God, we can say, “My God, I am only human; help me.” Say just a few words to Him, because if you do not knock, the door will not be opened. “Knock, and it will be opened to you.” Although He is ready to help, He does not force His help upon us. It is like someone sinking out at sea while a rescue vessel is beside him. Yet in his pride he refuses to send out an SOS, and the captain goes down with his ship, even though the rescue vessel is close at hand and others too are ready to hurry to his aid. That is how it is. Some people, then, do not know this weapon. Prayer, he says, is the light of the nous and the staff of hope. The person who prays has a staff called hope. He always hopes—always. Those who persevere receive even better results, because many people pray once, offer a Paraklesis, light a candle, and so forth, and then stop there.

They expect God to come to them at once and say, “Here you are, my child. Now go back to all your other affairs—your worldly, fleshly, and selfish pursuits.” That is not how it works. Prayer is like drilling a well. At first you thought you would find water at five metres, but you have drilled ten and still have not found it.

What will you do? Since you have already paid to drill ten metres, you decide to drill another two. You drill those two and still find nothing. Then what? Because you have already spent the money, you continue two metres at a time. In my homeland there is a place where a well had to be drilled to a depth of 224 metres. If those people had drilled 223 and a half metres and then said, “Enough! Leave me alone; there is nothing here,” what would they have lost? For the sake of half a metre, they would have lost all their labour.

They would have lost the sweat, expense, and struggle of drilling 223 and a half metres. Prayer is like that. You do not know how deep you must drill, but you know that the water is there. You do not know when you will receive an answer, but you know that He can give the answer. And that is a great thing. Prayer is a staff upon which your soul can lean, so that your legs do not tremble. For this world is filled with mines, needs, and tribulations. There are rivers of tears, while joy is no more than a firefly, scarcely anything at all. Unless a person has this hope, summoned forth and acquired through prayer, he is tormented and sorrowful. Prayer is also called the axe that cuts down despair. The person who prays has cut despair down; Satan can never drive him to utter hopelessness. And Saint John Climacus concludes: prayer is the wealth and treasure of Christians—the wealth and treasure of Christians. John Chrysostom says...

“If a person deprives himself of prayer, he does the same as if he were to take a fish out of the water.” Would not the fish die when taken from the water? So it is with the person who deprives himself of prayer. “For as water is life to the fish, so prayer is life to man.” Just as water is the life of the fish, prayer is the life of the soul. I would now like...

to ask: When did prayer begin? Where do we first see prayer among mankind? We see it in the first family. From the first days of human life upon the earth, the first couple’s first two children, Cain and Abel, felt the need to offer supplication to God, accompanied by sacrifice. Just as we bring a candle, a prosphoron, a little oil, or some incense, and make the sign of the Cross, so did they. The first human beings—the hearts of the first human beings—felt the need...

to commune with God and, in some way, to thank Him, for there are many kinds of prayer. There is prayer of thanksgiving, prayer of supplication in which we seek an answer, and prayer of glorification. Prayer has many forms. Cain and Abel therefore thought it good to thank God. The first altar we see, from which prayer was offered up to God, belonged to these first two children, Cain and Abel. If we open Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament, to chapter four, verse three and following, we find these words: “And it came to pass after some days”—that is, after a few days...

“that Cain brought an offering to the Lord from the fruits of the earth.” Cain was evidently a farmer. These were what he had, and from them he took something to sacrifice to God. “And Abel,” the other brother, “also brought of the firstborn of his sheep and of their fat.” He brought fine lambs: the firstborn, the strong, the good, and the choice ones. He sacrificed them, burning and roasting them, and the savour rose toward God. The savour of Cain’s offering also rose toward God, as did that of Abel’s. But God retained the right to choose whether to accept the offering or not. I may offer something, and the offering is made.

I may speak, and the words are spoken. In my need I may cry aloud. I pray—but He also has the right to listen and respond, and whether He responds depends upon certain circumstances. “And God looked upon Abel and his gifts, but He did not regard Cain.” Indeed, one might say that the way the incense or smoke rose toward Heaven immediately revealed God’s will: Cain’s did not rise straight upward, as the Psalmist says, “Let my prayer be set forth before You as incense.” Many people examine such things superstitiously. “Look,” they say, “at the way the vigil lamp is burning,” and from that they draw conclusions about something that...

something that is troubling her or him inwardly, and so forth. Here it says that God looked with favor upon Abel’s sacrifice. And you know that this sacrifice led to the first murder and watered the virgin earth with innocent blood. The first blood the earth drank was a brother’s blood, shed by Cain—the blood of Abel—because God did not accept Cain’s offering. Instead of asking himself, “Why did He not accept mine? Perhaps I did not act rightly or think rightly,” Cain became jealous of his brother and thought he could simply remove him from his path. God hastened to prevent him—I do not know whether you remember these events...

He said to him, “Why are you downcast, Cain? If you had been careful and discerning in choosing your sacrifice, would I not have accepted it? What has your brother done to you? Why have you set your mind against him?” Cain had done what I shall now explain. He did not choose the finest part, in keeping with the greatness of the One to whom he was making the offering; he took what was common. He chose the refuse—the chaff and straw from the wheat—and offered these as a sacrifice to God. We do the same. We are not discerning in our offerings. Have you ever heard someone say, “I have some oil that will not even burn in the vigil lamp”? This implies that the vigil lamp is where you burn all the worthless oil.

We use the oil with zero acidity in our salads because it is better for our health, but we think we can put whatever we please into the vigil lamp. No, that is not how it should be.

When you intend to give someone a gift—to place them under an obligation or win their favor—you take care that the gift is worthy of the person and of their position. You consider which shop to buy it from, what brand it should be, and how it should be wrapped before you present it. You take the person into account. In the same way, you must take God into account. Even with the vows we make in difficult moments, promising, “Do this for me, and I will do that for You; grant me this, and I will bring You that,” once we have received what we asked for, we still try to twist the truth and avoid fulfilling our promise sincerely. I remember reading a relevant story.

A man in need made a vow to God: “Grant me something; let me find something along my way, for I am so poor, and whatever I find, I will bring half of it to You.” As it happened, while walking along, he found a sack full of walnuts.

It had been left there, perhaps having fallen from someone traveling ahead of him—from a car or a cart; I do not know. In any case, that was what he found. He said to himself, “I must give half of this.” So he sat down, cracked the walnuts, kept the kernels for himself, and took the shells to church as his offering to God. That is what we are like: we keep the kernel and give away the outside...

the worthless remains of the walnuts. That is how we are. This is what Cain, the first man born of woman, did, and God did not accept his offering. This shows us that God is discerning and cannot be deceived, as some of us imagine. God looks at who is praying to Him, not merely at what is being prayed; He looks at who is praying and why. We often pray and receive no answer, and this troubles us. There is a particular reason why we receive no answer. A person must come to terms with this inwardly, so that the ground of his hope is not taken from beneath him. Satan is cunning and knocks that support away: “No one hears you. Look, there is nothing there, despite all you tell me,” and this can produce entirely contrary results. So, as I was saying, the first to feel the need to turn toward heaven were those first two children...

Cain and Abel by name, the children of Adam. A second altar, equally important and with blessed results, appears after the Flood. There we read that when the Flood had ended, the waters withdrew once more into their depths and disappeared, and the family that had survived Noah’s Flood emerged again. There were eight of them: Mr. Noah and Mrs. Noah; Shem, Ham, and Japheth, their sons; and their sons’ wives—eight people. They again felt the need to raise an altar to God. This is also recorded in Genesis, in the same book, further on after the Flood, in chapter eight. You will find it from verse eighteen onward...

as follows:

“Noah went out, together with his wife, his sons, and his sons’ wives. They went out of the ark. Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, took from every clean animal, and offered whole burnt offerings upon the altar”...

as a sacrifice to God. “And the Lord God smelled a sweet fragrance, and God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and have dominion over it.’” In the first case, when the offering was not made with care, this blessing did not come from God.

In the second case, therefore, a person must know to whom he is addressing himself and that the One whom he addresses has certain requirements before He answers. I will state one basic principle briefly. A holy man of the desert said concerning prayer, “He hears you if you hear Him.” In other words, do you want God to hear you? Then you must listen to Him. If you will not listen to Him, He will not listen to you. The man who had once been blind from birth and was healed by Christ found himself before the people and showed that God is the Creator, for Christ put a little spittle and earth upon his eye and made an eye with them—and you know what an eye means. This man who had once been blind...

said the following in his defense before the Jews, who were pressuring him not to glorify Christ but to give glory only to God: “We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone worships God and does His will, He hears him.” He was saying that from the foundation of the world, from everything we hear, read, and see, we know that God does not hear or give heed to a sinful person. That is, He hears him, but does not answer. “But if anyone worships God”—if he reveres God—“and does His will,” meaning that he also keeps His commandments. For it is not enough merely to say, “I believe; yes, God exists, a higher power exists,” and so forth. Yes, but if He exists, why do you not do what He says? “If anyone does His will, He hears him.” You must both acknowledge God and act accordingly.

That was his answer. Therefore, certain conditions are required for prayer to be accepted. Let me mention a few more of them. For example, Christ tells us: “Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone.” A person who is not at peace with another cannot stand in prayer. The conflict and bitterness he bears toward his fellow human being create a difficulty, an obstacle. “If you have anything against anyone,” He says, “whenever you stand praying, forgive, so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.” For in our prayer we also say, “Forgive us our debts”...

“as we also forgive our debtors.” Yes, but He turns to you and asks, “Have you forgiven? Is that true, or are you lying?” Often we are lying. We could reverse the words and say, “Do not forgive us our trespasses, just as we have not forgiven the trespasses of others.” Yet we lie and, without paying attention, say to Him in the Our Father, “Forgive us our debts,” even offering Him our own example: “as we also forgive our debtors.” Elsewhere, in Matthew chapter twenty-one, He says: “Whatever things you ask in prayer, believing”—believing that you truly may receive them—“you will receive,” provided, of course, that you are not bound. Do you know how we should picture our prayer? It is like a dove eager to fly all the way to the throne of God and bring our answer back to us.

It takes our little letter, our note, in its beak to carry it to God. We tell it, “Fly there, go, and return.” But some of us have sins or are bound to this world. Then it is as though you fastened a piece of iron, a weight, to the dove’s foot. However much it wants to fly, it cannot, and so it remains here. The dove is not at fault, nor is God. I am at fault, because I did not sever that bond so that my prayer could reach Him. It is like a story I once told about some Englishmen who had gone ashore to amuse themselves at a port. Their ship was lying offshore. In the morning, after they had been drinking and celebrating, they climbed into a boat and took up the oars to return to their ship. But dawn came...

and they had not moved from the quay. People passing by that morning saw two men rowing, gathered around, and began laughing, because in their drunkenness the men had not untied the boat. They had left it moored and simply taken up the oars and pulled. So it is with us: we row, but sin holds us back. The same is true in prayer. We send up our prayer, we say that we are in need, and we believe in God, but sin holds us back. That is exactly what happens in this case. A person must therefore let go of these things so that he can present himself before God. He cannot be double-minded, divided between one way and another. “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways,” writes James, the Brother of the Lord.

There are certain cases in which people may say, “I have been asking for so long, yet I receive nothing.” There are two reasons for this. The first is that, for the present, it would not be good for you to receive what you are asking for. A child asks his mother for scissors, and she does not give them to him. The child cries, and the mother is distressed because she loves him, but she cares even more about what is good for him. It would not be good to give him the scissors, because the child cannot yet handle or use them properly. The result could be painful and quite the opposite of what he desires. Seeing that it would not benefit the child, and that he cannot yet handle a knife, scissors, or something similar, the mother does not give it to him. She withholds it out of love, not malice. So it is with God. Often, some of the things we ask for would not benefit us at that time, and God does not answer us. This is another aspect of the matter.

“You ask and do not receive.” Many times, he says, you ask and do not receive. Why? “Because you ask wrongly, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” Many people ask for material things or for success in other matters so that they may satisfy their pleasures and live for this world. Christ does not answer such requests. He does not help a person toward his own destruction. He seeks to save him, giving him what he needs at the proper moment and at the proper time. A mother follows an order: now she gives this, and later she gives something else. A nurse does the same: now she gives this medicine, then some drops, then something else; she takes the temperature, and so on. There is an ordered method intended to produce a good result. The same is true of prayer. Often in prayer we ask for things that, on the one hand, are not good for us and, on the other...

may actually harm us. Here in Athens there were two sisters, both of whom have now died. One of them was driven by pride and was desperate to obtain a position at the Bank of Greece. Her older and more sensible sister said to her, “My dear Sophia”—that was her name—“you pray, my child. If God sees that this is good for you, He will open the door for you to go there. Why are you tormenting yourself? Why are you ruining your health?” She nearly became consumptive. The story I am telling you took place forty years ago. Nothing would dissuade her. I do not know why she was so determined to become an employee of the Bank. For four or five years...

For four or five years she kept trying through connections and all the rest. At last, that door opened: she was hired, became an employee, and was even made secretary to the General Director. She was beautiful and educated, and so forth. The result was that she suffered two calamities. The first was that she began an affair with the Director. Because of her, the Director divorced a beautiful and very good wife with three children. Then she fell from the top of a staircase and was shattered at the bottom. After a year and a half of living in sin, they carried her away from there in pieces. She brought about two disasters.

God had been protecting her, saying, “Do not go there.” For God does not see only what I see: that I want to get ahead now, that I need something now, that I think I need this or that right now. God sees farther ahead and, as we say, He sees what lies behind as well. He sees tomorrow and knows what is truly good for us. Many times He does not answer precisely for our own good. It is better for us not to have that thing today. We may be disappointed for a while. We may have planned things differently, fashioned our dream in another mold, and set our heart on it. Yet that very thing could be our ruin—and not only our eternal ruin, but even our ruin in this present life. Many people say, “I am not interested in the life to come. I am only interested in this life.” Yet some lose even this temporal life. Those who, as the saying goes, trample underfoot God’s providence, love, and care for them may lose even their present life.

Something unforeseen happens—a tragedy, or some whirlwind in life—and we lose even this temporal life. Yet our pride will not let us admit, “Yes, that is how it is, and I thank God.” Our forebears, who were wiser than we are, gave us that classic saying: “There is no evil without some good mixed in.” No evil at all. Back when TAE Airlines was still operating, it had a flight from Alexandroupoli to Athens. Among those due to fly was a colonel with his family. On the way, he kept blaspheming the driver’s Most Holy Theotokos because the car had broken down and there was a chance that he would miss the flight. Yet the driver was not at fault. He had checked the car, but a car is made of metal; it is a machine. It suddenly broke down and needed time to repair. And indeed, they missed the flight.

His blasphemies against the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ multiplied. They had barely gathered their things and loaded them again to return when a telegram arrived saying that the airplane had crashed somewhere near Athens and no one had survived. Then he swallowed his words. He fell silent and began kissing the driver. Of course, neither man was a believer. But God’s providence—perhaps to preserve his family, for he had three little children with him, or perhaps for the sake of his wife, who was a good woman; I do not know the reason—allowed the car to break down so that he would miss the airplane. That breakdown had been regarded as something bad. It seemed harmful: they would have to stay at a hotel and leave the next day, or whatever else might happen. Yet it saved their lives. If we knew how to read the events of our own lives,

we would find this saying fulfilled many times. “Why did that not happen then? Why did I not go? Why did this obstacle arise? Why did I wake up with a fever of forty degrees?” Let me tell you about a young woman who had received a scholarship. Her mother was proud of her and wanted her to go abroad, to Italy, become an artist, and sing at La Scala in Milan—or so she said. On the day she was to leave—again, this was in the days of TAE Airlines, as I recall—the car came to collect her in the morning, but she lay rigid in bed. She could not move at all, and she spent four months in the Asklepieion Hospital in Voula. She said she had lost everything, lost her future, and all sorts of other things. Yet God was protecting her from destruction. And what happened? As this young woman lay in her hospital bed, while the doctors could find no illness at all,

one day she said to her mother, “Mother, if you change your life”—for her mother was living as she pleased, frequenting all the places of revelry around Phaleron—“if you change your life, I will get well.” How could her mother believe such a thing? Yet some time later, just before Pascha, her mother went to Holy Confession. She then went joyfully to tell her daughter, so that little Katina, who was there in the hospital, might rejoice as well. It was Monday, and she found Katina standing, suitcase in hand. “Mama, I have been waiting for you so that we can leave. I have been well since last night. Let us go home and celebrate Pascha, and then come back to receive my discharge papers from Professor Garoufalias”—or whatever the professor’s name was; I do not remember. This is how God works. He saved the daughter in time, preserving her from destruction, and He also brought the mother back to the right path. God is not concerned with the trifles that concern us.

He is concerned with what endures: our happiness both in this world and in the world to come. I shall stop here and, God willing, perhaps we shall say a few more words another time.
