Summary
The Great Litany calls worshippers to enter the holy temple with faith, reverence, and fear of God, conscious that nothing can be hidden from Him. Although petitions for emperors have often been omitted in modern democracies, the lecture argues that Christians should pray for every civil authority so the people may live peacefully and devoutly. Finally, the Church prays for temperate weather, fruitful harvests, and peaceful seasons because human beings need both spiritual grace and the material necessities of life.

In our last talk, we were speaking about what is known as the Great Litany, as we said, if you remember.
We called it a litany because it speaks concisely about many things in just a few words. That is why, as we said, it is called a litany. Looking at my notes, I see that we had not finished discussing it.
We had reached the point where the deacon...
calls upon the worshippers, the listeners, to pray: “For this holy house and for those who enter it with faith, reverence, and the fear of God, let us pray to the Lord.” In other words, those who do not enter with the fear of God, with faith and reverence—either because they do not wish to or because they do not know where they are, before whom they stand, and why they have come there—for them, in a certain sense, attending church does not bear good fruit. The purpose of worship is not fulfilled in them. A person must have a certain...
reverence, a certain fear, and must consider before whom he is appearing. He is not appearing before some great man of this world, an earthly benefactor, a superior, his parents, his teacher, or anyone else. He is appearing before God, before whom the whole of creation is nothing. You understand, then, with what reverence and awe a person must approach. John Chrysostom, who deals with these matters more than anyone else, expresses his own view in these words: “You entered the temple; by doing so, you declared yourself worthy.” In other words, you thought carefully about it.
You considered where you were going and examined yourself to see whether you were able to go, because you were going before One from whom you can hide nothing. Before everyone else we can pretend, play a part, and deceive them. There, we cannot deceive anyone. That is why he says: “You entered the temple; by doing so, you declared yourself worthy”—that is, you thought carefully about it. So much for that. Yet, as you yourselves know, most of us attend church merely as a matter of form—with certain exceptions, of course, so that we do not speak in absolutes. The next petition follows. Up to this point, the Litany has spoken about the temple and about the faithful. But the Divine Liturgy cannot be celebrated with only a temple, buildings, and the faithful.
The priesthood is also needed. There must be a particular body of clergy, a particular group of people. In the Old Testament, as you may remember from school or from your own reading, there was a tribe set apart, the tribe of Levi—hence the name Levites—from which the ministers of the Church were drawn. Therefore, when we say that we are going to church, we do not mean that we are going merely to walls, stones, and material things. Nor do the temple and ourselves alone constitute the Church; the priesthood is also needed. All together constitute the Church and make use of the sacred space and of this whole order. The clergy and the people, gathered in the temple, offer the sacrifice.
They offer their petitions, receive from there, and send forth from there. That is why the next petition, if you pay attention in Church, is: “For our Archbishop”—and here they say the name of the Archbishop of each province and parish—“for the honorable presbyterate, the diaconate in Christ, for all the clergy and the people, let us pray to the Lord.” The Litany now brings them in as well and places them before us because, as we said earlier, the house needs ministers. So it brings them into consideration too. I always want you to know that from the earliest years of the Church—one might say from apostolic times—you find exhortations concerning this in the Apostolic Constitutions.
Speaking of the clergy, it says: “For the priests and the presbyterate are the council and governing body of the Church.” You cannot remove them and then say, “I have the Church.” You cannot have the Church without them. They too must be present, and all together constitute the Church. Another Apostolic Father, Saint Ignatius the God-Bearer, puts it in his own way: “Take care to do all things in the harmony of God,” with everyone gathered in one accord, “with the bishop presiding in the place of God”—for the bishop holds the place of God on earth; this is how he has been appointed within the Church—“and with the presbyters in the place of the council of the Apostles.”
That is, the presbyters hold the place of the Apostles, while the bishop holds the place of God. “There is nothing better than a presiding presbyter or an eminent priest.” That is, nothing is better than having someone preside who truly stands in his proper place, understands his mission, and fulfills his true role. For, you see, he is what we might call the medium—the mediator. “Medium” here means mediator, not a medium who engages in demonic practices. He is the mediator between man and God. He offers supplication, and through him God gives back to us. It is not the priest himself who gives; it is done through him. He is the connecting link. The phrase “the diaconate in Christ,” used here, refers to the deacons serving within the Church, and...
not only to the one who wears the orarion and says, “In peace, let us pray to the Lord,” but also to the others who minister there. Many people serve within the Church, especially in a large parish attended by great numbers. Let me give you a figure that will astonish you. When Hagia Sophia in Constantinople was fully functioning, do you know how many people served on its staff? There were 450 priests, deacons, chanters, and other ministers. That gives you some idea. But between twenty and thirty thousand people attended church there every Sunday, and 450 people ministered to them in various ways. There were also deaconesses, who attended to the needs of women, including when women were baptized.
They went into homes to give Holy Communion to sick women, and they too were included among those 450. This, then, is what is meant by the diaconate in Christ. “All the clergy and the people” includes those of the lower orders—the readers, the chanters, and the whole body of people who fulfill some role in the Church. Next comes a petition that has been removed from the Church’s services today because we no longer have a monarchy but a republic. In essence, of course, this is a mistake, because the Church is governed neither as a republic nor as a monarchy. She has no relation to such earthly arrangements. She lives on earth, but her citizenship is in Heaven. This petition existed from the very beginning, in the earliest Divine Liturgy, namely the Divine Liturgy of Saint James. The Liturgy of Saint James was the first to appear; the others developed from it.
Then came the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil, and afterward, as I told you in another talk, that of John Chrysostom. There is, then, a supplication for rulers, which says: “For our most pious and God-protected emperors, for all their palace and their armed forces, let us pray to the Lord.” Today, as I said, this has been removed so that it will not cause offense—not because the Church has some special connection with kings. Still, I want us as Greeks to know that the emperors of Byzantium contributed greatly to the Church and to Orthodoxy. If you go to that unique place on earth known as the Holy Mountain, everything you find there was built by emperors and empresses. The things preserved there are unparalleled.
The wealth devoted to it, and everything spent to build those monuments—monuments that people come from every part of the world to see and that have stood there for about fifteen hundred years—came from emperors. For the most part, they were deeply devout rulers. Look at how kings and various leaders of the people today have become entangled with Freemasonry. But in those days they were worthy of commemoration in the Church, and the faithful prayed that God would illuminate and preserve them all, so that they might govern peacefully, quietly, and so forth.
I want you to know this: if you open the New Testament, the Gospel, which millions of people throughout the centuries have held in their hands, it is a book common to all—a “new” book, for the Greek word is spelled with alpha and iota.
In Paul’s First Epistle to Timothy—he wrote two epistles to Timothy—in chapter two, from verse one onward, do you know what he says? He exhorts us to pray. And do you know where he begins? We are to pray for kings and for all who hold positions of authority: the prime minister, the president of the republic. We are to pray for people who hold some office and bear responsibility for the people. And bear in mind that when Paul wrote this, those rulers had not even been baptized and had no relationship with God. In Paul’s time they were idolaters, yet he tells us to pray for them. “But he is an unbeliever.” What concern is that of yours? Do you know what Paul adds?
“So that we may lead a calm and peaceful life.” When a person prays for someone, even if that person does not believe and has no relationship with God, God has the power to speak good things into his heart and use him for the good of the people. It makes no difference what he is. A rusty wire can still carry electric current and serve people. If, then, as Paul writes—and Paul was not mistaken—he exhorted prayers to be offered for pagan kings and pagan officials, “so that we may lead a calm and peaceful life,” God can use them as instruments. For, as you know, God can press even Satan into service.
When someone needs to be helped, even Satan can be compelled to serve, and something negative can be made to benefit a person. That, of course, belongs to the wisdom of God. If, then, we were commanded to pray for rulers in those days, why should we not pray for them today, when at least they are baptized? Yet I repeat, that is not really the issue, because today we have framed the matter differently. We think that the Church serves concerns related only to this world. So we say: now there is a republic, away with the monarchy. Then the kingdom of—how does that saying go? We even composed a hymn wishing it many years. In any case, Holy Scripture contains prayer for those in authority, even when they are kings.
That prayer was present in the Church. Only recently, I repeat, and only in this particular instance, was it removed. Yet we have passed through other republics before, and monarchies returned afterward; these things change from day to day. The texts of the Church do not change. Nevertheless, this principle is present within them, and I would like you to keep it in mind. To give us a clear understanding of the matter, I have called upon both the opinion and a prayer of Saint Basil the Great. Saint Basil was neither a republican nor a royalist; he was a man of God. He viewed things from God’s perspective. Listen, then, to what he included among his prayers in the Church. At one point, standing before God as a bishop, he says: “Remember, O Lord, our most pious and faithful emperors.”
Someone may say, “But they are utterly impious.” We cannot call them utterly impious. Just as I cannot tell you that you are impious, nor can you say that of me. If I address you as “Miss So-and-so,” you may reply, “Honorable Mr. Panagopoulos.” That is simply the language of courtesy; we leave it to Someone else to judge who I am and who you are. The Church does the same here. She presupposes that the ruler ought to be most pious. If he is not, then it is to his own detriment that he is not. Nevertheless, the prayer says: “Remember, O Lord, our most pious and faithful emperors, whom You have counted worthy to reign upon the earth.” Do you imagine that everyone who rises to power does so entirely by himself? That is what we say. But when an evil ruler rises to power, does he rise by himself? The rulers are given in proportion to the people.
We would have better rulers if we ourselves were better. God gives people rulers according to their hearts. This is what the books say; this is what the Old Testament and the Fathers say. So: “Those whom You have judged worthy to reign upon the earth, crown them with the weapon of truth and the weapon of Your good pleasure. Overshadow their heads in the day of battle,” for we will also have enemies. Overshadow the ruler, so that he may govern well and we may not be enslaved. “Strengthen their arm; exalt their right hand. Make their kingdom strong. Subject to them all the barbarous nations that desire war,” because a Christian, if he is truly a Christian, never goes against another person. The barbarous nations are those that seek...
to subjugate us, as you know; and we ourselves have bitter experience of this, for we remained under the Turkish yoke for more than four hundred years. “All the barbarous nations that desire war. Grant them a deep and unassailable peace. Speak good things into their hearts concerning Your Church.” Perhaps this ruler is wicked, perhaps he is an unbeliever; who knows what he does in secret?
You, Lord, speak to him for the good of Your Church and all Your people, “so that in their tranquility”—as Saint Paul said in the passage I mentioned earlier—“we may lead a calm and peaceful life in all godliness and dignity.” And Saint Basil continues: “Remember, O Lord, every principality and authority.”
Even if the country is not a constitutional monarchy but a republic, it still has a ruler; and the Church prays that God will illumine and strengthen him as well. “Remember every principality and authority, our brethren in the palace, and the entire army.” If there is a palace, we pray for those in it too. This petition causes scandal today. That is why I am explaining it to you, and why I have told you the Church’s understanding of it and the setting in which this petition was established.
Within the Church there are the bishop, the presbyterate, and the others; and there are also rulers within the state, because the people who come to the Church are citizens of that state. If the state is not preserved, but is enslaved and so forth, the Church too will be extinguished, and then we lose both body and soul. Thus, both the rulers of the Church and the rulers of the state, working together, can help the people according to their respective roles, provided that they truly have the fear of God. Then there is another petition which is also omitted for democratic reasons, so that no one will appear objectionable. It says: “That You may fight alongside them and subject beneath their feet every enemy and adversary, let us pray to the Lord.” This refers to kings and rulers. We pray: “O God, fight alongside them, so that they may subject beneath their feet every enemy and adversary.” Yet we raise objections. “We are free,” someone says. “Are we to make people slaves today?” On the human level, they remain free. That is not what these words mean. When the prayer asks that the enemy be subjected, it means subjected to what is right and true.
It means that he should cease to be rebellious, lawless, unbelieving, and barbarous; that he should not worship the sun and snakes, or worship a cow while remaining hungry and dying of starvation when he ought to eat it in order to live. That is what it means. It does not mean that he should be held as a slave or a serf, or anything of that kind. Such things never belonged to the Church, and they were certainly never characteristic of the Greek people. The Greek, who has freedom in his very nature, cannot feel at ease with such a thing. The Greek lived under slavery, but he did not enslave other peoples. If you read history, you will find this to be so. In our Church, besides the Gospel, as you know, there are also Canons of ecclesiastical law. Synods established these Canons to give order to the whole life of the Church, in ecclesiastical, social, and civil matters.
There is a Canon of the Synod of Carthage—the seventy-sixth, I mention it simply for reference—and another Canon of the Synod of Antioch. They speak of “the aid of the external authority given to the Mother Church for the establishment of order against rebels or troublemakers.” May that authority give us the strength to succeed. The phrase “beneath their feet” means under their government. The aim is not for people to remain barbarous, but to be governed by people of refinement and moral character—that is, by an authority inspired by the spirit of the Christian faith. It does not mean trampling people down and keeping them as slaves.
For those peoples, such protection would be humane, merciful, and fatherly. Saint Basil the Great says—and I invoke him once again—“Subject to them all the barbarous nations that desire war. Speak good things into their hearts concerning Your Church and all Your people.” You know, God is wise, and He knows how to govern every side of human affairs: He uses the good for the sake of the wicked, and places the wicked under the influence of the good. Do you know what a prophet says about God? “He catches”—He takes hold of and seizes—“the wise in their own craftiness”; God catches them in their own wickedness. God is wiser, as I told you; He is not...
a man. He is the One who frustrates the plans of the wicked. That is the meaning of “He catches the wise in their own craftiness.” Then, as this section concludes, it speaks on behalf of this Church—or, if it is a monastery, on behalf of this monastery: “For every city and country, and for the faithful who dwell in them, let us pray to the Lord.” You see, unbelievers in some way remain outside these invocations made in the Church, because they themselves choose to remain outside. They do not come forward to receive mercy; they do not want it. Indeed, they often blaspheme the very things that others regard as great...
and worthy of reverence. They reject them from the outset and want nothing to do with them. In such a case, God cannot reach them in the way they refuse to receive Him. Yet He has mercy on them and loves them. He permits them to eat, to see, to have health, and to enjoy His sunlight and His air. There is a prayer in the Church, at Compline, which says: “O You who love the righteous and have mercy on sinners.” Thus, He has mercy on the unbeliever too, but He cannot bestow the fullness of His love and gifts upon him, because the man offers no vessel in which they may be placed. If something liquid is being distributed, you need a solid container. If I come with empty hands, without bringing a suitable vessel properly prepared, how can I receive that blessing? This is precisely what happens.
That is why, in this case, it says, “and those who enter in faith.” Those who enter with faith and attentiveness will receive, and it is for them that we pray. We would be acting very irreverently if we presented before God people who do not even want Him and said, “Have mercy on them.” From the outset, they want nothing to do with Him. That is why the petition again insists, “and for the faithful who dwell in them.” You should also know that there is a special prayer for the city and for the people who live in it. It is a prayer offered during a procession.
An icon is carried in procession. Thank you.
When there is an epidemic, we may bring a relic from afar and hold a procession. We do the same during a drought, asking God to send rain, or when there is a plague of locusts, another pestilence, disease, and so forth, asking God to deliver us. Within that service there is a prayer which says: “For the preservation of this city, and of every city and country, from wrath, famine, pestilence, and earthquake”—in Greek, the words for famine and pestilence are distinguished by their spelling. That is, from hunger and from disease—“from earthquake, flood, fire, the sword, invasion by foreign peoples, civil war, and sudden death.”
All these things come upon us unexpectedly. Who can forestall them? That is why we ask God beforehand to protect us—if we pray to Him and believe in Him. “That He may turn away and disperse every wrath and disease.” Many times our way of life is such that God is angered against us. You see the earth shaken. You see clouds gather over Zakynthos, then travel to Athens and empty themselves there. Do you know what the meteorologists who were watching said when that great flood occurred in Athens? When those clouds gathered over Zakynthos, two immense black clouds rose, and they were not allowed to release their water anywhere along the way. Then they poured it out over Athens. So we implore God beforehand “to turn away”...
and “to disperse” this wrath—that is, to soften it—“every wrath and disease stirred up against us; to deliver and save us from His just threat hanging over us; and to have mercy on us.” This is a prayer concerning the city, as the petition here says: “For every city and country, and for the faithful who dwell in them, let us pray to the Lord.” Then follows another petition: “For temperate weather, for an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and for peaceful seasons, let us pray to the Lord.” “Temperate” means that the weather is mild...
a moderate climate: neither so cold that it yields nothing, nor so hot that it burns everything. This, then, is what we ask for. At this point, within the Church, we turn to material needs. Everything mentioned earlier was spiritual. There is also a petition devoted to material things, because the human being has a twofold nature, as you know. He also has a body that must be fed. If the right amount of rain does not fall, if favorable winds do not blow, or if the exact opposite occurs at the wrong time—heat and scorching wind when we need rain, and snow when we need warmth—you understand what will happen if such disorder arises. So the Church hastens to entreat God. And when we say “the Church,” we do not mean the walls; we mean all the people, praying to Him for temperate...
weather, for an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and for peaceful seasons: let us pray to the Lord. Temperate weather concerns the winds. Abundance concerns the produce: wheat, oil, wine, and the many other things people need for nourishment and survival. Imagine that instead of mild winds we had scorching winds, such as the hot southerly wind; it would dry everything up. Those of you from farming regions will understand this even better. Let that burning wind blow in summer, and you will not harvest a single bean. Everything dries up.
You expected to produce something and set something aside for your family and your livelihood, but you gather nothing. There is nothing there. Let a windstorm arise, and it will uproot everything and leave nothing behind. That is why we pray for moderate weather, neither bitterly cold nor scorching hot, both of which can cause damage, but weather that will help prevent such destruction. Imagine if the earth ceased to produce crops—vegetables, legumes, and fruit. What would happen? Life would be finished. We need peaceful seasons: rain at the proper time and warmth at the proper time, so that all these things may grow and good produce may be abundant. Then both we and others can be fed. You know how many goods are exported from one country to another. One people pays another, receives some of its products, and gives others in return. In this way, the peoples of the world serve one another.
If these things do not happen—if we do not pray for an abundance of the fruits of the earth—then that abundance will not come. One Father says: “Think of the birds in their distress,” when they can find nothing to eat; “the bellowing of the cattle,” as the animals begin to roar and rush upon us to devour us; “the crying of infants,” because if the mother has nothing to eat, she will produce no milk to feed her child; “the outcry of the young, the suffering of the elderly,” who need food so greatly, and often need a special diet; “the deprivation of orphans, the lamentation of widows, the poverty of the poor, and the pleading voice of all the people.” Imagine what would happen if there were a collapse, as we say, and the earth ceased to yield an abundance of fruit. Think what would become of us. And when the petition says, “for peaceful seasons”...
a person can understand what a peaceful season and peace itself mean when war is approaching. When we hear that war has been declared against us that very night, and we wait for the planes to rise and the bombs to come, then we can appreciate what it means to have peaceful seasons. So long as no siren sounds, no enemy cannon fires, and no enemy bomb falls, we fail to make good use of this peace from God. We use it for evil, for our sins and our pleasures. When that peace disappears and the war bulletins begin, then people will understand. I have lived through such a moment, and I speak to you from my own experience. May God never count you worthy to hear an air-raid siren. Then you would understand what it means.
How greatly we need peace! Without it, we would not be able to protect others—not even ourselves. The Church knows why she has placed this petition there; she knows exactly what it means. I say this because we hear the deacon or the priest proclaim it while we are in Church, but we do not live it. My God, do not count us worthy to see such dark days. We are sinners; do not count us worthy of that. Let me say a few words, because when a person takes part in the prayer—and he will take part if he understands these things—then it is not only the deacon’s little rifle firing petitions toward heaven, but the prayers of everyone present. “Yes, may it be so. Yes.” That is what “Amen” means: “Yes, may it be so.” Just think: it is one thing for one person to approach a great and powerful man with a request.
It is another thing for a thousand people to go, or ten thousand, or a hundred thousand. They will move him more deeply. Something similar happens in these matters of the Church. The Litany then says, “For those who travel by sea”—the Church remembers them too—“for travelers, the sick, the suffering, captives, and for their salvation, let us pray to the Lord.” For those who travel by sea: every day we read of shipwrecks. Have you ever closed your eyes and imagined the moment when a ship is sinking in the ocean, amid a violent storm or a hurricane, in the darkness, beyond the reach of help, with nothing at all in sight? And the man aboard may have children, a wife, and so many responsibilities, yet he is drowning and the fish devour him. Have we ever imagined such a thing?
Meanwhile, we sleep in our beds, troubled over our own concerns. That man went out to earn his bread and provide for his family. He went to earn money through blood and toil so that he could support them. And for the most part—apart, of course, from the exceptions that always exist—these are prudent, hardworking people. They spend a few years risking their lives at sea so that afterward they may build a little house and establish something of their own back home. They need more than the prayers of their relatives—more than the prayers of the mother who knows her child is risking his life at sea to send home five dollars or ten pounds. This entire group of people needs the prayers of the faithful, because we are bound together with them. They are not a separate part from us.
Therefore, when the Litany says, “For those who travel by sea,” we must pray. Do you know how many miracles have taken place? If you ever wish to—or if you ever go to Aegina, to the shrine of Saint Nektarios of Aegina, that famous modern-day Saint—look up above the place where his holy head is kept, where various votive offerings have been hung.
Look at them, even if only out of curiosity. You will find earrings, watches, gold coins, and little ships hanging there. In one case, during a hurricane, everything seemed lost. The Saint went and held the ship fast in one place for three days; and when the disaster had passed, they set sail again. The captain himself then had a golden model of the ship made in the Philippines, brought it there, hung it up, and placed his signature upon it. And this is not the only such case.
If you ever remember, even out of curiosity, take a look and see what God does through these saintly people. In other cases, Saint Nicholas intervened in time and the ships were not destroyed. Others fell into the sea, yet neither fish nor sharks devoured them. They remained there for three, four, five, even ten days and, miraculously, survived. These things happen through the prayers that the Church offers and must continue to offer. But when we hear, “For those who travel by sea,” we think, “Let those at sea fend for themselves.” No, that is not right. We pray for those who travel by sea and for those who journey by land. When these petitions were first composed, there were many who traveled on foot. Today, inventions have shortened our distances, and within a few days—or even a few hours—we can reach the ends of the earth. In apostolic times, people traveled by camel or donkey. For the most part they crossed deserts on foot, suffering and enduring great hardship. They too needed prayer.
They might fall into the hands of barbarians or robbers, or into the jaws of wild beasts. The grace of God had to guard these people, for they too were traveling to conduct some trade or attend to some need. The Church, then, watches over all of them. Today we would not pray only for those who travel by sea; we would also pray for those who travel by air. How many people are in the air at this very moment? One is traveling so that his child may undergo an operation; another is going to become the elder of his family; another is traveling for work. All of them are in the air right now. If a person could imagine how many hundreds of thousands of people are in the air at this moment, and how this continues all day and throughout the entire twenty-four hours, he would be overwhelmed. The whole world seems to be in the air. It takes only one fault, one wire—
—and they are destroyed. And the Church prays for them. Today, I say, if these litanies were adapted and revised, a petition should be added for those who travel by air—for the people who are in the air at this very moment, not only for those at sea or those traveling over land. Then we pray for the sick. How many people are ill! There seem to be more people confined to beds than standing upright. And even among those who are on their feet, some are sick but have no bed available to them. Where could enough beds be found? The world is filled with sickbeds. There may be five people in one house, and four of them are ill—perhaps even all five. Yet they still go about their lives. They suffer from various illnesses. I myself am walking about at this moment, though I carry seven illnesses in my body—serious, fundamental illnesses. Yet I live and go about day and night. If I too am counted among the sick—and indeed I am—you can understand what a vast cloud of sick people surrounds us. The Church therefore prays for the sick, especially for those suffering from incurable diseases.
It is a grave matter when people must leave behind families, parents, children, and so forth. We must pray for the sick. The Litany also speaks of “the suffering,” meaning those who have grown weary and are utterly exhausted. Some people are exhausted not only financially and physically, but also in their patient endurance, until they reach the verge of suicide. When a person’s patient endurance and physical or material strength are spent, nothing seems to remain except what the devil suggests to him, seeking, if possible, to claim him: suicide. That is what the devil proposes. Such a person needs the prayers of others to strengthen and uphold him. And there are many such people. Do not judge by those of us who enjoy a certain measure of comfort.
Others are working for us, and others worked for us in the past. Many people need the prayers of others. Whenever the Church celebrates the Divine Liturgy, wherever it may be celebrated, these people are brought into its midst. We pray, then, for those who are weary and suffering in soul and body—especially those who are beset by hardship. That is what hardship means: everything goes badly for them, nothing comes easily, and so they become exhausted. We pray for the suffering and for captives. How many captives are there today? I need not take you far away. I will simply point to the Cypriots, our brothers and sisters.
How many thousands are under Turkish rule today? How many have abandoned their homes—how many! These people need our prayers. Have you seen the icon of Saint George? Have you noticed the small child riding behind him on the horse? Do you know who that is? The Turks had taken that little boy captive. On the feast day of Saint George, he remembered what used to take place at home. His father was named George, and the village had a church dedicated to Saint George and celebrated his feast. But the boy was a captive. A Turkish agha had taken him as a servant. At that moment, as you may be able to see in the icon, he was holding a vessel—not a glass jar or decanter, but an earthenware vessel. He had gone to fetch water so that his master could wash.
He wept as he went to the fountain for water, and he called upon Saint George, whose feast his village and his father were celebrating that day, asking the Saint to remember him too. As he was drawing the water, he saw beside him a horseman on a white horse, standing near a large rock. The horseman called him by name—I do not remember what the boy’s name was. The boy turned and looked at him. The horseman said, “Come, climb up here.” He lifted the boy onto the horse behind him, and they vanished. Within a few minutes the boy was back at his home and in his own village. Saint George left him in the courtyard so that he could celebrate with his father and join his village in keeping the Saint’s feast. These are not fairy tales, however much the world may regard them as such. For if we consider these things fairy tales, then we ourselves are also a fairy tale. If we examine the matter in that way, then we too would have to be imaginary. Consider what you are. You do not know what you are, and neither do I know what I am. Yet we are persons...
We possess will, persistence, self-defense, the capacity to act, and reason. We exist; we are something. So we pray for these captives. And consider us, who make such a display of concern—for example, I have given this recent example of Cyprus and the Cypriots, over whom we claim to grieve. If I were to ask now who has ever prayed for those Cypriot captives, no one would raise a hand. And even if one or two did, the other ninety-eight of us have not prayed. Where is love? I do not mean divine love, but even ordinary human love. Where is it? It does not exist. What, then, are we? We enter the Church and make great, sweeping signs of the Cross. That is what we are. Yet the Litany says, “For the suffering, captives, and for their salvation”—that these people may be set free. It is true that here it is clearly speaking of those who are physically captive.
But there are also spiritual captives, whose condition is worse. I dare say that it is better to be enslaved to a Turkish agha than to the devil, to sin, or to immorality. It is better, because we shall receive the body anew. But as for the soul—if we carry it over there in such a state, I, for one, do not wish to do so. The Litany continues: “For our deliverance from all tribulation, wrath, danger, and necessity.” Do we not have tribulation? Do we not have distress, difficulties, and problems in our lives? God alone can resolve these situations. The Greek word for tribulation comes from a verb meaning to press or squeeze.
Sadness—mere sadness—should not dwell in a person. Tribulation means being pressed and crushed, as olives are pressed in an olive press. Tribulation produces oil, as the saying goes, and often it benefits us. Distress means being in a narrow place. I do not have enough money; I do not have freedom of movement. The word comes from being confined in a narrow space. I pass my days with difficulty. I do not have the ease and comfort that someone else has. Every day the question bores into me: how will I manage today? Therefore, when the Litany says, “that we may be delivered from all tribulation,” it means tribulation of every kind. That is precisely what it means: every kind of tribulation. Perhaps your relative is ill; perhaps you yourself are ill; perhaps financial pressures are bearing down upon you.
You have your social-security contributions to pay, but you do not have enough money to go and see your family at Pascha, for example. These are tribulations and troubles. Of course, some troubles are created by our own carelessness and foolishness. I am not speaking about those, but about the trials that arise through lawful and moral circumstances and can bring spiritual benefit to a person. The Church prays for deliverance “from all tribulation and wrath”—both our wrath toward others and theirs toward us. Many evils are committed in a moment of wrath, and afterward we repent, but by then it is already too late; the deeds have been done. A person must try to prevent such things rather than seek to cure them afterward. Prevention is better.
What does a good ruler do? He foresees. He anticipates and prevents harm. Yet many times we are forced to ask forgiveness afterward. Why? Because for one moment we were not watchful. “From all wrath,” the prayer says, “deliver us from Your righteous wrath, which comes upon the sons of disobedience.” May He deliver us from that wrath. And from dangers—from dangers of every kind. Could someone not have planted a bomb here to blow us into the air? Why could they not? Could someone not set a fire and burn us alive? Why could they not have done so?
Yet when a person prays to God, God can forestall such dangers. You may be traveling by car and suddenly find yourself at the edge of a ravine. God guards you when you pray and say, “My God, You go before me.” A person, then, must pray. And we pray for deliverance from necessity. Here our needs are both spiritual and material: the deprivation of life’s necessities. This is a serious matter. Many people suffer from such deprivation.
It is undeniable that there are people in this world who suffer greatly. They have nothing—not even the basic necessities of life.
The Litany concludes: “Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O God, by Your grace.” Do you know what “Help us” means here? It means, “Take hold of me.” The Greek word is related to the grip or handle of a sword. So now you say to God: “Take hold of me. Save me, have mercy on me, and keep me, O God, by Your grace.” Not according to justice, and not because I deserve it, but because You are good. Guard me in Your own way, and help me in Your own way.
Then it says: “Calling to remembrance our Most Holy, immaculate, most blessed and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, with all the Saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.” In other words, concerning all the petitions we made earlier, we now bring forward the Most Holy Theotokos together with the Saints, asking them to intercede with Christ that these petitions may be granted to us. You see how many titles the Theotokos has: immaculate, most blessed, glorious, Lady, Theotokos, Ever-Virgin, Mary. You should know that our Most Holy Theotokos has more titles than anyone else in the world. You have heard them many times.
I mean the many names and titles given to her. Once I had the opportunity to try to collect the titles of the Theotokos, and I gathered six hundred of them. And those are not all. There are many others that I have come across since then and did not include. I am very grateful for the work I did at that time. She is the one person on earth who remains beyond all explanation. Of course, we simply turn to her when we need her: “My Most Holy Theotokos, help me. Most Holy Theotokos, save me,” and so forth. We treat her as though she were there merely to serve us, or rather as a nurse; and once the storm has passed, we put the Most Holy Theotokos aside. We have other business now.
Then, when something happens again, we shall call upon you again, because that is what we do. For if we truly had this fear—that is, reverence for her person—we would do nothing shameful before her. And yet there are some who, at the first sign of trouble, as I said, invoke her and God. So, with the Most Holy Theotokos and all the Saints—“calling to remembrance all the Saints”—let all of us, together with those we mentioned, those who travel by sea, those who journey on foot, and so forth, entrust our life to Him: “Let us commend our whole life to Christ our God.” For God is such that He takes the human person into His care, provided, of course, that the person surrenders himself to Him. As I told you earlier, He does not take charge of someone who does not surrender himself to Him. He does not compel anyone. It is for whoever is willing.
The more a person surrenders himself in faith and becomes simple before God, the more he will receive. But there is a detail here that, you should know, is entirely false on our part. Through the deacon we say it; we cry out to Heaven: “Let us commend our whole life to Christ our God.” If someone stands up and cries out a lie, must we all say, “Yes, he is telling the truth”? It is a lie. We are not even willing to surrender our life to Christ. Each of us takes charge of his own life and arranges it for himself. We may tell Him that we are entrusting our life to Him and ask Him to take charge of it, but we do not truly entrust it to Him. Unfortunately, most religious people do not hand over the keys of their soul.
That is what we are: inconsistent. It is a strange mystery, one might say, that we mock God to His face and He does not answer us. We mock Him to His face. Later, if God permits and we continue, you will see examples that will make you ask yourselves whether you live consistently with the things you say when you go to Church—for some, of course, may not go. Those of us who do go to Church will see that we are not at all consistent with what we say. Not at all. We are strangers to this particular petition that we address to Him: “Let us commend our whole life to Christ our God.” The only One to whom we do not surrender our life and our very being is Christ. To our own reasoning, yes; to our friend, yes; to our girlfriend, yes;
to our parent, yes; to our tutor, yes; to our teacher, yes; but to Christ, no. You know, today especially, people occupy themselves with everything and try everything, bitter and sweet, except Christ. They do not accept Christ. They think they have no need of Him, and they do not acknowledge Him at all—apart, of course, from certain people, and from some who acknowledge Him in their own way, in small doses, as we might say. The truth is that, precisely because He does not seize us by the ear, we acknowledge neither His almighty power, nor His omniscience, nor even His existence. If He does seize us by the ear, it will then be too late, because God does not want anyone to remain close to Him by force. He wants each person to come willingly and joyfully: “Whoever desires to come after Me.”
In any case, I shall stop here, because if we continue, we will not have enough time for the next point. We have two minutes left, and we would only confuse the subject. God willing, we shall continue in another talk.

Προς Τιμόθεον επιστολή του ο Παύλος, στην πρώτη — έχει δύο Προς Τιμόθεον γράψει — στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο, στίχος ένα και κατωτέρω, ξέρετε τι λέγει; Προτρέπει να προσευχόμεθα και ξέρετε πώς αρχίζει; Να προσευχόμεθα υπέρ βασιλέων, υπέρ των εν αξιώμασι όντων, τον πρόεδρο της κυβερνήσεως, τον πρόεδρο της δημοκρατίας. Για τους ανθρώπους οι οποίοι έχουν κάποιο πόστο και κάποια ευθύνη για τον λαό, να προσευχόμεθα υπέρ αυτών. Και αν θα ληφθεί υπόψη ότι, όταν γράφει ο Παύλος αυτά, οι βασιλείς δεν ήσαν καν βαπτισμένοι, δεν είχανε καν σχέση με τον Θεό. Ήσαν ειδωλολάτραι επί Παύλου και λέει να προσευχόμεθα γι' αυτούς. «Μα αυτός είναι άπιστος». Τι σε ενδιαφέρει; Ξέρετε τι προσθέτει;
Αίτημα, και όμοια να πάνε χίλιοι, και όμοια να πάνε δέκα χιλιάδες, εκατό χιλιάδες. Θα τον συγκινήσουν περισσότερο. Έτσι ακριβώς είναι κάπως και στα θέματα αυτά της Εκκλησίας. Στη συνέχεια λέγει «υπέρ πλεόντων» —κι αυτούς τους λαμβάνει υπόψη η Εκκλησία— «οδοιπορούντων, νοσούντων, καμνόντων, αιχμαλώτων και της σωτηρίας αυτών, του Κυρίου δεηθώμεν». Υπέρ πλεόντων. Διαβάζουμε κάθε μέρα ναυάγια. Κλείσατε τα μάτια σας ποτέ να σκεφτείτε αυτή τη στιγμή που ναυαγεί το καράβι στον ωκεανό, μέσα σε μια ανεμοθύελλα, μέσα σε έναν τυφώνα, μέσα στο σκοτάδι, και δεν το φτάνει και να μην υπάρχει τίποτα που να φαίνεται. Και αυτός να έχει παιδιά, να έχει σύζυγο, να έχει τόσες ανάγκες, και να πνίγεται, να τον τρώνε τα ψάρια. Φαντάστηκε ποτέ ο άνθρωπος;
Διοικεί, λες; Τι προβλέπει; Να προβλέψει και να προλάβει. Πολλές φορές αναγκαζόμαστε να ζητήσουμε συγγνώμη εκ των υστέρων. Γιατί; Δεν προσέξαμε σε μια στιγμή. «Από πάσαν οργήν», λέει, «ρύσαι ημάς από της δικαίας σου οργής, της επερχομένης επί τους υιούς της απειθείας». Να μας γλιτώσει από την οργή εκείνη. Από κινδύνους, πάσης φύσεως κινδύνους. Δεν μπορεί τώρα να μας έχουν βάλει μια βόμβα και να μας πετάξουν στον αέρα; Γιατί να μην την έχουν βάλει; Δεν μπορεί να έχουν βάλει, να μας βάλουν μια πυρκαγιά για να μας κατακάψουν; Γιατί να μην το έχουν κάνει;
