Summary
Christ’s miracles reveal His divinity, while His ordinary human actions reveal the two natures united in Jesus Christ. The leprosy of Moses’ hand, Miriam, Gehazi, and King Uzziah illustrates how pride, slander, greed, and disobedience corrupt the soul. Their restoration emphasizes the priesthood’s role in repentance and reconciliation, while warning that sacramental absolution should be accompanied by reverence and genuine spiritual change.

This evening, I would like to use this time to offer, as best I can, a moral interpretation of the events of today’s Gospel, as our Church presents them. I do not know whether you realize it, but Christmas is now behind us, and we have entered the period of Christ’s public ministry. The Church will now present a series of miracles demonstrating the divinity of Jesus Christ, because Christ reveals His divinity to us through His works.
His human frailties—the fact that He eats, sleeps, walks, speaks, and experiences anguish—reveal His humanity. He is both God and man. As man, He speaks, weeps, experiences anguish, and, as I said, prays; but as God, He works miracles. He opens graves, casts out demons, cleanses leprosy, and does countless other things. In these two kinds of action, therefore, the two natures of Jesus Christ are revealed. Above all, Christ came into the world because of the sin of the world. He is the One who takes away, who bears, the sin of the world. He is the Lamb of God, John says, who takes away and bears the sin of the world. And Isaiah beheld Him eight hundred and fifty years before Christ.
He bears the sin of the world; He suffers pain for us, Isaiah says, and endures suffering for us. He did not ascend the Cross for sins of His own, but for our sins. So, as I was saying, during these days our Church presents us with a series of events demonstrating the divinity of Jesus, and today those of us who attended church encountered our Christ working a miracle upon ten lepers. I do not know whether this disease has ever occupied your thoughts, or whether it concerns you now. In any case, every Christian ought to have read something about leprosy. As a disease in itself, God knows it, and medical science knows it. But it also becomes a symbol, because...
Sin—forgive me—leprosy is a type of sin. From this perspective, if anyone has studied the matter, Saint Justin Martyr, the philosopher, says: “Leprosy represents sin, and the ordinances concerning leprosy represent the Passion that Christ would one day endure for sin.” As you know, illnesses concern doctors, and doctors concern themselves with illnesses. Medicines are connected with illnesses, and the sick are connected with medicines. In the case of leprosy, however, matters are different. If, for example, we read in the Wisdom of Sirach...
In chapter 38, we find what it says about the physician and the value of the physician. Kings, rulers, and everyone else must honor the physician, because there is need of him; they need him. Today, for example, the President of the Republic is in the hands of the physicians. In a sense, he departed from this world as though dead. If he had not awakened, how could he have awakened as he did? Medical science helped him: it not only put him to sleep so that the operation could be performed, but also woke him again. “He has regained consciousness,” Mallios says in the President’s medical bulletin. In chapter 38 of the Wisdom of Sirach, there is a commandment from God that we should honor the physician.
“Honor the physician, for you have need of him,” it says; and concerning medicines: “The Lord created medicines from the earth.” He gave us the herbs, and He gave us medical knowledge; through these medicines, many of us recover our health today. Of course, when there is some unusual illness for which no medicine exists, we then turn to God and ask Him for help. What all the physicians and all their medicines together cannot accomplish may be accomplished by a little piece of cotton with some oil, or, what do I know, a little antidoron—the blessed bread distributed after the Divine Liturgy—or whatever oil remains in an oil lamp. Through these things a miracle may occur. This, then, is how matters generally stand with human illnesses. But because leprosy is plainly a type of sin, God treated it separately and did not place it in the hands of physicians. Instead, He trained the clergy, so to speak, to deal with it.
The clergy were to make the judgment concerning lepers. That is why today—though I do not know whether those of you who attended church noticed it—Christ sent the lepers who had been healed to show themselves to the priests, so that the priests could judge them fit to return to ordinary social life. This is significant. Those of you who have the Old Testament should read chapter 13 of Leviticus. There it speaks of whether the sores are red, whether the hair is yellow, whether the sores are deep, and so on. The priests were to act accordingly, and finally, when a wound had certain characteristics, they would announce the expulsion of the sick person, and he would have to leave his home.
He would be removed from ordinary society; he would leave his village, his town, or his city and go outside the camp. That is why our Christ met these ten lepers outside the camp today. They even spoke to Him from a distance. They did not approach Him, but cried out from afar, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” Chapter 14 of Leviticus describes the manner of restoration. An entire sacred rite was performed for someone who had been healed—rarely, I suppose, perhaps miraculously; I do not know how. A complete sacred rite was performed. Let me put into simpler language...
What chapter 14 of Leviticus says concerning leprosy and the leper who had been healed. The Lord spoke to Moses and said: “This is the law concerning the leper who has been healed, on the day of his cleansing. The healed leper shall be brought to the priest”—the priest of the Law—“and the priest shall go outside the camp.” The healed leper was not to enter the camp; the priest would go out to him, just as, for example, a priest goes to the door of the Church and receives a child from the arms of its mother when she comes for the fortieth-day blessing. The priest would go to the place where the leper was and examine him.
He would establish that the man’s leprosy had been healed—that he truly was healed. From that point the sacred rite began. The priest would then command that two living, clean birds be brought for the healed leper, together with cedarwood, a length of twisted deep-red thread, and hyssop. All these things would be brought. He would then order one bird to be slaughtered over an earthenware vessel containing living water—that is, water from a spring, not from a cistern. Next, he would take the living bird, the cedarwood, the twisted scarlet thread, and the branch of hyssop, and dip them, together with the living bird, into the blood of the slaughtered bird mixed with the spring water. Thus, into this earthenware vessel, which contained the blood of the first bird, the water, and the other items, he would dip the living bird. Then, using these things, he would sprinkle the healed man seven times with the bird’s blood, and the man who had once been a leper would be regarded as clean. Afterward, he would release the living bird to fly away into the open country. That is one part of the rite. There is another part involving two sheep: one is slaughtered, and the other is sprinkled with its blood, and so forth. An entire sacred rite was performed before the man could be regarded as properly cleansed from leprosy.
This was necessary not only so that he could return home and freely associate with his family, but also so that he could come to the Church and offer sacrifice. It was no simple matter for anyone to be declared clean. We simply say, “I went to Holy Confession.” Yes, you confessed; I have no objection to that. But always retain a little fear, a sense of reverence, a holy awe within you. You sinned for fifty years, and in a single second everything was put right? Formally, yes, it was put right—but was it put right in the depths of your being? This fear is necessary. That is what this passage seeks to emphasize: before reaching the point where you can offer sacrifice and have your offering accepted...
You must consider the matter carefully. In those days, this kind of preparation took place. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says the following about it: “Through both birds Christ is signified: dead as man, yet living as God.” The bird is also understood as an image of the One who descended from Heaven above. One bird was slaughtered, signifying that He died as man; the other remained alive and flew into the sky. They released that second bird. This, he says, was a type. Origen also offers an interpretation of this and says:
“Living water from a spring was poured into the vessel,” for such water is purer than water from cisterns, “so that the cleansing might be accomplished by water and blood, which flowed from the Savior’s side.” The pure water and pure blood, he says, symbolized what flowed from the Savior’s side. The water cleansed us in Baptism, and the blood cleanses us in Holy Communion. The use of the second bird is even more interesting: the two tips of the living bird’s wings, together with the cedar, the hyssop, and the scarlet cord, were bound together and dipped into the earthenware vessel containing the mixture of water and blood, forming a kind of sprinkler.
With this, the healed leper was sprinkled and cleansed. If you wish, read chapter 13 of Leviticus: first, to see the commands given concerning the disease; and second, to see how the person’s case was settled, how he was cleansed, and how seriously every detail was treated. Thirty-two entire verses are devoted to it. Chapter 14, verses 1 through 32, explains in detail what had to be done so that the man could be recognized as validly cleansed, as we might say—legally in those days, and ecclesiastically today...
So that he could present himself, offer sacrifice to God, and have his sacrifice accepted. All this is described there. Read it when you have time, because I must also show you the other examples. Now, of course, some people who do not study these things and are hearing for the first time about these types and connections may have doubts about whether it is correct to say that sin had leprosy as its type—or, conversely, that leprosy is a type of sin. Allow me to relate a few events that prove this is indeed the case. If someone wishes to find the earliest event chronologically that speaks of these matters, he must go very far back, to the time when Moses was speaking with God.
These events speak for themselves. Moses was to go to Pharaoh and lead out the people who were enslaved in Egypt. As you know, Moses did not want to go, because he viewed the matter in purely human terms. Those of you who have read the account know that he could not speak well; he was not eloquent. He had difficulty speaking; we would say that he was slow of speech. He regarded this as a disadvantage. To go before the king and persuade him to surrender six hundred thousand pairs of working hands, upon which Egypt’s prospering economy depended, Moses thought he would have to be shrewd and silver-tongued, able to argue both sides of a matter. But he did not possess that kind of eloquence, so he drew back and said, “I will not go. I cannot.”
“I am slow of speech,” he told Him. Then God said to him, “Who makes people’s tongues? Did I not make them? Do I not know that you are slow of speech?” In other words, would I send you without knowing this? Moses could not grasp this word or God’s plan. So God told him, “You will perform certain miracles wherever you go, so that they may believe that you are not doing these things by yourself, but that Someone else is directing you to perform them and that you are acting on His behalf.” Still, nothing could persuade him. Moses continued to reason that a powerful and capable man was needed to fulfill this role and carry out this work. Then the Lord told him to put his hand inside his garment, and he did so. “Take it out,” the Lord said.
He took it out and was terrified. It was completely white with leprosy. He was terrified. “Put it back,” the Lord told him. He put it back. “Now take it out again.” He took it out, and it was restored. This is who you are. You are the leper. You are the sinner. Do you think you will accomplish this work? I will accomplish it. Therefore, go where I am sending you. If you have time, read this as well in Exodus, chapter 4, verses 5 through 8—or begin with verse 5—and you will see all the arguments God used to persuade Moses to undertake the work He was assigning him. This proves, then, that man is leprous; God shows him that sin dwells within the human person. Man is born with sin. “Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me,” the Psalm says. It is therefore impossible for anyone to claim that he is clean.
Another event confirming what we have said is found in Numbers. As you know, the Book of Numbers belongs to the Pentateuch: Genesis, Leviticus, Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. In chapter 12 of Numbers, an event is recorded that proves leprosy truly is a type of sin. Again, it concerns the family of Moses. As you know, there were three of them: Moses, Aaron the high priest, and their sister Miriam. Moses married a black woman, an Ethiopian, without asking them and without consulting the family, as people say—as a mother, sister, brother, or father might insist, “Let us first be consulted.” Do you understand? He did not...
Ask us, and he married some woman of no standing, someone beneath him, and so forth. They thought that these black people, these Ethiopians, were not honorable enough to enter their family. For a man who spoke with God to marry a black woman? They did not consider it fitting.
You came! In secret they began wagging their tongues, their little tongues clattering away like typewriters—Aaron the high priest and Miriam. Read it there, as I told you, in Numbers chapter 12, verse 10 and following, and you will find all this: their conversation against Moses. Miriam was struck with leprosy from head to toe. Do you understand? Her flesh began to decay because of this malicious talk, this slander against Moses. And the same thing happens to us when our little tongue gets to work, whether for good or for evil.
Many times we do not see the leprosy, because we live under a different law; we are no longer under the type, the foreshadowing. They were terrified. The two of them repented, discussed what had happened, and...
they decided to hurry to Moses and beg him to pray to God. After confessing what they had done, they wanted him to ask God to forgive and remove the leprosy. Driven by the affliction of leprosy, they did indeed go to Moses. Moses saw his sister and wanted her to be delivered. They told him what had happened. Moses, a simple and guileless man, took no offense at them at all. He prayed to God to cleanse her of the leprosy. But God did not cleanse her immediately. “She will not be cleansed yet,” He said. “She must be disciplined; she must fulfill a canon, a rule of repentance. She will remain outside the camp for one week, seven days. Outside.” It is like when we are given a canon: a canon of two months, or a canon of forty days. She was to remain outside the camp, and only then, He said, would she be cleansed. Miriam fulfilled her canon, and after seven days she was cleansed. This incident, too, is clearly a type of sin. And I do not know whether you noticed this: although she and Aaron had spoken together, Aaron was not...
struck with leprosy, because he was the high priest, and the priesthood itself cannot be leprous. Learn this lesson. Some people understand this lesson very well. Many grasp its meaning here: the priesthood itself cannot be leprous. A priest may become leprous in his own soul, but the priesthood itself cannot be leprous. Outwardly, you will see that he wears the cassock; whatever sort of man he may be, he still bears the priesthood. He may deserve...
he may deserve the same leprosy as his sister in his own soul, but the priesthood is not leprous. Do you understand? In any case, that is the second example I wanted to give you. There is also a third in 2 Kings. It concerns Elisha and Gehazi. You remember how Naaman the leper went to be healed and what followed. It is a whole history, an entire story.
Those of you who have not heard that talk should ask for it on cassette, find it, and listen to it. You will see what powerful weapons it gives us Orthodox Christians, for us Orthodox Christians. In the end, Naaman was healed. What did Elisha tell him? To immerse himself seven times in the Jordan. Naaman treated it as a matter of national and patriotic pride, which did him no good, and imagined that any water could heal him. So he became angry and was ready to leave, saying, “In our homeland we have the Abana and the Pharpar, great rivers. Am I to come and immerse myself in this little stream?” You may have the Abana and the Pharpar, great rivers, but they do not possess what this little Jordan possesses. Nor would you be healed if you immersed yourself in them. Then one of his humble servants stepped forward and said, “Father, did he ask some great thing of you? We have come all the way here from Syria.”
He simply told you to immerse yourself. Yet Naaman would not even step down from his chariot. He preferred his leprosy and his pride to humbling himself, being freed from leprosy, and returning home. Many people have suffered the same thing, and it still happens in our lives. They want to remain in their chariots; they imagine things, reason things out, and arrange everything in their own way, and so they remain with their leprosy. They would rather keep their leprosy than humble themselves. In any case, the leper came down, went to the Jordan, and immersed himself seven times: once, twice, three times, four, five, six—and the seventh time he came up with flesh like that of a little child. Then the man departed. Elisha refused to accept anything from him. But Gehazi, his servant, was displeased. “Even if we did not ask for these things,” he thought, “we should at least accept whatever he offers us.” Elisha would take nothing. Naaman had his attendants and all the rest with him; it is a whole story. Gehazi must have been among those servants. The crafty fellow ran after him.
When Gehazi caught up with him, Naaman asked, “Why have you come? Is everything well?” Gehazi replied, “Some sons of the prophets have arrived, and they have no clothing. If you wish, you might give me a garment or two for them.” This was a lie of his own invention. In any case, they loaded him with the gifts. He took them away, brought them somewhere, and hid them. Then he went and stood before Elisha. “Where have you been?” Elisha asked. “Where have you come from?” “I did not go anywhere,” he replied. “I was nowhere.” Then Elisha said, “The leprosy of Naaman shall come upon you,” and Gehazi came out white as snow. “The leprosy of Naaman shall come upon you,” he told him, and he came out white as snow. What an outcome! Are these not beautiful lessons? The Abana and the Pharpar are great rivers—Roman Catholicism and Protestantism are great rivers—but they avail nothing. The seven Mysteries of the Jordan, little Orthodoxy: this is what casts off leprosy. No other river removes leprosy. Let the world not be deceived, but seek to learn the truth.
It is not a matter of quantity, but of quality. I urge you to listen to that talk, if it is still available. There is also a fourth case, concerning a king—King Uzziah. He began to reign in Jerusalem when he was sixteen years old, and he reigned there for fifty-two years. In the end, King Uzziah was punished with leprosy because he allowed the people to offer sacrifices in a place where God did not want sacrifices to be offered. It was a high place, and God did not want them to sacrifice there. The king failed to take measures to stop them from sacrificing there, and he was struck with leprosy. Would you like to look that up?
You will find it in Chronicles as well. I do not remember exactly where. I will find it, however, and tell you. I neglected to make a note of it here. But let us continue. On the basis of all this evidence, then, and taking our occasion from it, we say and demonstrate from Holy Scripture that this matter truly lies in the hands of the priests. If people put human reasoning first, they would never go to them. The ten lepers, too, would have gone away if they had put human reasoning first. What did they say to Christ? “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” What kind of mercy were they asking for? Two drachmas? A few coins? They were speaking of...
their need. And what was their need? To be healed. They wanted to return to their homes, their families, and their work; their lives had fallen apart. Christ did have mercy on them, as the outcome shows, but in a strange way. He did not do everything without their participation. For if a person wants to be saved, if he wants to be cleansed from sin, he too must contribute something on his part. And what could a person contribute in this case? Obedience—whether what he is told seems reasonable or strange. It is precisely in what seems strange that our ego is humbled. Christ did not heal them first and then say, “Go now, my children; I have healed you. Show yourselves to the priests, and they will give you the document declaring that you are free from exclusion.”
They would take away the document excluding them and give them a certificate of freedom, so that they could return to their homes. But Christ had not yet healed them. He simply said, “Go and show yourselves.” “But what does this mean? Are we to go back? We showed ourselves to them before, and they drove us away. And You have not healed us, so how can we return?” Yet they did not demand a rational explanation from Him. They received His command like little children and set out to show the priests the wounds they still bore. And as they went, they were healed. On the path of obedience, a person receives what he does not expect. You also know the story of the man born blind. Christ anointed his eyes with clay and told him, “Go and wash.” That poor blind man might have said, “Have You no shame? I do not even know who You are. I am a blind man, a person bearing a sacred image, and You smear my eyes with clay and send me off to wash?”
“What sort of thing is this?” And yet he went. He may have protested, but when he arrived and washed, he discovered that behind the clay there was light. That is the point. My beloved, if you want to be freed from sin, and if you want to see things differently, stop relying on your own reasoning. Where God acts, there is no place for the question “How?” These are the words of John Chrysostom. That is it. Where God commands, where God speaks, where God gives an order, do not put human reasoning first. Would we have this cancer in our homes—the refusal to bear children—if we listened to God and did not place our own reasoning in the middle? “How will this work? How will I manage?” And so on and so forth.
That whole anxiety would have been put to rest. He says, “I will neither forget you nor forsake you. I have you in My own hand.” Read Isaiah chapter 49 and see what it says. “Can a mother forget the nursing child at her breast?” Of course, a mother may become distracted on the telephone and her child may fall into the fire. Such a thing can happen. But even if a mother should do what ordinarily she cannot do—something altogether exceptional—“even if she should forget, I will neither forget you nor forsake you. I hold you in My hand and watch over you every day.” A person sleeps at night, while God is thinking of him and seeking to help him with some difficulty he faces. Unfortunately, this faith does not exist today; this simplicity does not exist today. Pride stands in the way, and people try to solve everything through human reasoning. But reason, as you know, is meant to keep us from falling into holes, not to keep us away from faith. Human cleverness blinds us to the things of God.
We need a white cane called faith. Just as a blind person walks safely with a white cane, so does the believer. His cane is called faith. But faith requires us to lay down the ego, and a person is not willing to do that. Christ pointed directly to this and said, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself.” The self is the obstacle. It is not his wallet, his wife, his children, her husband, money, or work. God gave us all these things. The obstacle is the ego. Think about what the word means, because faith means surrender: I hand myself over; I entrust myself. That is why we do not see these results. “As they went,” the Gospel says, “they were cleansed.” As they went. Here I would like to say one more thing. You must go and show yourselves to the priests.
To the priests. Why did they have to go to the priests? Are You not God? Yes. Are You not also the Priest? Yes. Then what business do the priests have standing between us? Many people who want to settle their affairs with God without a priest make a fundamental mistake. They are deceived; they do not see. God commands, “That is where you must go.” And you are not told to choose one whom you consider good: “Go and find a good priest,” and so on. “Do you know a good one?” If he wears the Orthodox epitrachelion, the priestly stole, even if he is the most sinful man in the world, go and attend to your own need. Leave him to answer for his own affairs. Whether he is good or bad is another matter. Attend to your own need. Christ did not tell them to find some especially worthy priest. For there can be two sides to a person: outwardly he may appear to be something that inwardly he is not.
God knows the truth of the matter. Or outwardly he may not appear worthy, because that is how the world has portrayed him, while inwardly he may be worthy; God knows the truth. Christ did not tell them, then, to go and find a good priest. He appointed where they were to go: “Go to them. To them I have given the authority to bind and to loose.” And today He has given priests that same authority to bind and to loose. They had excluded you, telling you to remain outside your home and community because of your condition; and they would be the ones to tell you that you could return to your former home and enter the Church. They were the ones who had to say it. You saw that two sacred rites were performed to bring the person back into the Church, to restore his communion with God, so that he could offer the bloody sacrifice required at that time. Something similar happens today. The priests possess both the command and the authority. We must understand this.
People who reject priests for one reason or another reject Christ Himself and God Himself. They have neither Christ nor God. Many say, “I believe in God; I believe in Christ; but do not speak to me about priests.” Satan knows that the priesthood is the bridge. If he prevents you from crossing that bridge, he has you in his hand. Christ says, “He who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” Whoever refuses to receive you rejects the Father and does not receive Christ. “Tell him: I am the One sending you. Who are you to refuse him?” Ask an ordinary priest to read the prayer over some water, and it becomes the blessing of water, the Agiasmos, and it will remain so for a million years. Go to Saint Gerasimos and hear what the devil says. Let any Orthodox priest put on his epitrachelion and let it hang down over him, even on some remote island.
No Protestant or Baptist can do this. There is neither voice nor response. But when an Orthodox priest puts on the epitrachelion—whatever kind of man he may be, even the most sinful, as I said—Satan will fight him fiercely to the very end, yet the priesthood’s authority remains mighty. To priests, then, Christ has given the authority to bind and to loose. My beloved, many people remain outside the Church because the clergy have been so publicly maligned. And I want you to observe something wherever there is truth: is any other profession subjected to as much uproar as the clergy? No. Is any group attacked as loudly as monks? No. And so people are discouraged from becoming monks. Wherever you find an Orthodox cassock and a prayer rope...
the powers opposed to them flee. Satan’s interests are driven away. Do you understand? From this you can see where the key lies, where power is found, and where Satan meets resistance. On the very evening of Christ’s Resurrection, when He met the disciples for the first time and twice gave them His peace—“Peace be with you; peace be with you”—what did He then tell them, my beloved? “I am going away, but you will remain. As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” Then He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” and He breathed on them. He brought about Pentecost, the first Pentecost. Does this not strike you? Read John chapter 20 and see what happened there in the upper room on the evening of the Resurrection, when they received grace.
Of Pentecost. “Receive the Holy Spirit. Receive the Holy Spirit.” Why do we not take this seriously? “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” There are people who have been bound by the clergy—truly bound—and who rage because of it. They need the prayers of a bishop and much further work through the Church, so that the body may be released and the soul of the sinful man may also be relieved. Christ entrusted to the Apostles these powers that He Himself possessed. And do we not know that Christ possessed this authority? When the Pharisees saw the paralytic who had been lowered through the roof, Christ, “seeing their faith”—the faith of those who carried him—said, “Your sins are forgiven you.” The malicious men sitting there...
They blasphemed within their nous, the spiritual intellect. “What is this? Can he forgive sins? Is he God? Can the son of Mary and Joseph forgive sins?” But Christ was indeed God, and He caught them in their thoughts. Read the passage: He caught them. “Why do you think this?” He said. “Why do you reason wickedly? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to tell him, ‘Rise, take up your bed, and go’?” “Is that why we brought this man to You, so that You could tell him, ‘Your sins are forgiven’? And if there were sins, we did not see them. What are You telling us?” So what does Christ say to him? “Yes, arise, take up your bed, and walk.” He takes it and leaves. “So that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins,” He demonstrates it by saying, “Take up your bed and walk.” The man places the bed on his shoulder and departs. Christ, then, did not take this authority away with Him. He left it here.
The Apostles possess it, and they passed it on. The authority to bind and loose rests in the hands of the Apostle, in the hands of the bishop. The bishops possess this authority. But because Christianity spread and they could no longer attend to fifty or a hundred people when thousands needed them, they chose certain experienced clergymen and gave them a written commission. A written letter. I did not think to bring you one such commission, handwritten by Saint Nektarios of Aegina. I found it in Montreal, signed in his own hand. In it he appoints a man as a confessor and also gives him authority to tonsure women and men as monastics, all written in his own hand and in his own distinctive style. If I remember, I will read it to you as something extra by next Sunday, if we are still alive.
Thank you very much. Make a note of it, and you will also see the signature of Saint Nektarios of Aegina. I have obtained a copy. On the authority of that written commission, priests hear confessions on behalf of the bishop. He was healed. Now, as I said earlier, another thing that makes it difficult for many people to draw near is the slander directed against the clergy. Sadly, we see this happening. I want you to understand that the clergyman is an instrument. He does not sanctify the believer by himself, through his own grace or power. In every instance the Orthodox Christian says, “Send down Your Holy Spirit.” What do you hear at Holy Matrimony? “The servant of God, so-and-so, is crowned...”
“...to the handmaid of God, so-and-so, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” He does not say, “I crown them.” What does he say at Baptism? “The servant of God Demetrios is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” not, “I baptize him.” At the time of confession, does he say, “I absolve you,” as the Roman Catholics do? No. He prays, “O Lord, who said, ‘Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed,’ loose also this Your servant.” Again, it is He who acts. When you perform the blessing of water, what does the priest say? “Send down Your Holy Spirit and sanctify this water.” In every instance, the Holy Spirit acts. The priest is an instrument. It is better for the wire carrying the current to be galvanized, but even if it is rusty, touch it and you will still be burned. Grace passes through it, and the work is accomplished. Therefore, no one should ever be troubled by this, remain far away, and say...
“The priest is sinful. Let him first obtain forgiveness for his own sins. How can I receive antidoron, the blessed bread after Liturgy, from that hand? How can I receive Holy Communion?” Many people remain outside the Church because they think this way. Others suppose, “I will go directly to Christ and tell Him. I will tell the Most Holy Theotokos. I will tell God, for He is present everywhere,” as Protestants and other heretics say, “and then I am all right; nothing else is needed.” No. He has established another way. Suppose I sign a check for one hundred dollars and tell you to go and cash it with the bank manager. You cannot receive anything from him. Go and try to cash it with the bank’s largest shareholder. You still cannot receive anything. You must go to the clerk, and the clerk will direct you to the teller, where you will receive your money. “But are you not the manager? Are you not the largest shareholder?” Yes, but I have arranged matters in this way. Will you refuse to go? That is the appointed procedure. So it is in this case as well.
Ask for whatever you wish directly; you will receive nothing directly. The world receives mercy through the Church and through the clergy. We must understand this. If you wish, try to find...
The Prophecies of Agathangelos. It is a small booklet, perhaps in its tenth edition. Look and see: it says that this was written in Marseilles in the year 1200. Among its other prophecies, it speaks against Germany: “Woe to Germany,” which abolished the clergy and shut off the grace of Heaven. It produces Protestants. How could he have foreseen it? Protestantism arose in the 1500s, while these words were written in 1200, three hundred years earlier. He laments for them because they abolish the clergy, erase them, and lose their contact with Heaven. Therefore, when the bell rings, whether for Vespers or Matins (Orthros), and the priest begins with “Blessed is our God,” the believer should look spiritually to the priest and follow what he says, whether he understands it or not. He should remain joined to Heaven and offer supplication on behalf of the whole...
Of the entire world. The world receives mercy through the clergy, whether we wish to understand it or not. And if we do not understand it now, we will understand it when we die. Then we will see that the little prosphora offered for us by the widow, the orphan, or our mother reaches us there through sinful clergy. Then we will understand the power of the Church and the power of the clergy, whoever the particular clergyman may be. Basil the Great, whose words no one can reasonably accuse of being unsound, expresses it this way: “It belongs to no one to forgive sin.” No one, he says, can forgive sin, “except God alone.” God, he says, can forgive sin. “Yet the Lord, breathing upon the Holy Apostles...”
“...said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven.’” Since no one can forgive sins except God alone, He forgives them through the Holy Spirit by means of the Holy Apostles. Where, then, are you going? God alone forgives sins, and God forgives sins through the Apostles. Where are you going? Ask yourself that. You must go to the clergy. “Just as with the ailments of the body”—where do you go? You do not show a wound or an illness to just anyone or to some chance person, but to physicians experienced in the art of healing. When you go to a doctor, you go to the specialist. If your throat hurts, where will you go? To the ophthalmologist? Where will you go? If the problem is in your stomach, you go to the appropriate specialist. If something is wrong with your head, you go to another.
If it concerns your hearing, you go to the proper specialist. If something is wrong with your eye, you go to another. In the same way, the confession of sins must be made before one who is able to heal, and only the priest can do this. Here I would like to answer some who misunderstand the interpretation of a verse from James and are led astray together with various Protestants and others. It says, “Confess to one another.” They claim, “It says to tell your sins to one another and then you are all right. It says nothing here about a priest.” “Confess to one another.” This refers to the clergy, not to all of us indiscriminately. Although clergymen are themselves clergy and confessors, they cannot forgive their own sins. A confessor hears my confession, grants me absolution, and reads the prayer of forgiveness over me. But he cannot do this for himself. He must confess to another confessor, and that confessor must confess to another.
Patriarch Athenagoras, for example, confessed to a hieromonk. At Saint Anna’s Skete, I once unexpectedly opened the door of a room and found a bishop kneeling while an archimandrite, a hieromonk, read the prayer of absolution over him. The bishop had confessed; and when he rose, the hieromonk removed the epitrachelion and handed it to the bishop so that he himself could then confess. A man cannot forgive his own sins. This is why Scripture says, “Confess to one another,” so that you may be loosed. Pay attention to these things. Many of you understand this incorrectly. What comes of it if you tell me what you have done? And what comes of it if I tell you what I have done? Nothing. The sin is merely brought to light and spread about. An elderly woman comes and tells me her filth; I may learn it and then do the same myself—and you may do the same with mine. Many do not grasp this. But John Chrysostom says, “Those who dwell upon the earth and make their abode here have been entrusted with the things of Heaven.” Those who dwell upon the earth...
This refers to the priests. Those who dwell upon the earth and make their abode here have been entrusted with the things of Heaven. “For He did not say to the angels, but to them: ‘Whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.’” “Whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.” Earthly rulers also have authority to bind: a police officer arrests you and takes you to jail; a prosecutor has you imprisoned—but they can bind only bodies, not souls. Whatever the priests accomplish below, God ratifies above; the Master confirms the judgment of His servants. John Chrysostom says these things. And a confessor named Job says, “The priesthood is an order belonging to a divine Mystery.” Do you understand this?
It possesses spiritual power, exercised by men, and was handed down by our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ for the salvation and assistance of mankind. Today, abroad, they even have women priests—not in Orthodoxy, but among the other denominations. To those who say, “The priest is sinful; how can I receive anything from his hand?” I want to relate something mentioned by Saint Anastasios of Sinai. He says: “Do not say, ‘The one offering the sacrifice’”—the priest, for example—“‘is sinful, condemned, and unworthy, and therefore the grace of the Holy Spirit does not descend.’” Entertain no such thought. Another is the One...
Who knows and examines hidden things. Another, he says, knows them fully. Know yourself: are you really superior to him? Admit that he may be greater than you, and leave judgment to the righteous Judge. But let the priest be free from error in the dogmas concerning God. If he teaches you falsely about the Holy Trinity, the Most Holy Theotokos, or the divinity of Christ, reject him. But otherwise, he says, do not concern yourself with judging him. You are neither his judge nor the appointed examiner of his other actions. Know your own measure and dignity, and keep both your place and his. Therefore, I beg you: do not judge, especially a priest of God, but draw near with faith, active metanoia—repentance—and a clean conscience...
...to the divine Mystery and the sanctification bestowed upon all. Even if the one offering the bloodless sacrifice were an angel of God, if you approach unworthily you will receive no benefit. How could even an angel cleanse you from sins when you are wicked and have not set your life in order? You will receive nothing. Judas himself bears witness that this saying is true: he received the bread from the immaculate hands of the Master Himself, yet because he received it unworthily, Satan immediately entered him. Judas received Holy Communion from Christ Himself, but Satan entered him, and he received no benefit at all. So do not focus on this issue. Saint Isidore of Pelusium says something very strong: “The recipient suffers no harm.” I will suffer no harm from the sin and...
...the wickedness of the clergyman. “Even if the one who gives should prove unworthy,” the immaculate Mysteries that he administers are not defiled. Even if the priest surpasses all other men in wickedness—even if we suppose that he possesses every sin and all the evil in the world—the immaculate Mysteries you receive from his hands, the blessing of water, the antidoron, the prayer, and absolution remain valid for you, and you are truly loosed. Sadly, I repeat, many of us remain far away because we do not attend to these truths. I will close with a saying of John Chrysostom: “Even if priests are guilty of offenses, it is still not for us to judge their lives.” No, he says. “The one who honors the priest honors the blameless reality that his office represents.”
By honoring the priest, he will also honor God. But the one who learns to despise the priest will proceed along that road and one day insult God Himself. “Even if the priest is wicked, God sees.”

Δεν είναι θέμα ποσότητος, είναι θέμα ποιότητος. Σας λέω αυτή την ομιλία να την ακούσετε, αν υπάρχει. Και υπάρχει και μια τέταρτη περίπτωση, σ’ έναν βασιλέα, ο οποίος, ο Οζίας βασιλεύς, ο οποίος εβασίλευσε από δεκαέξι χρονών στα Ιεροσόλυμα και εβασίλευσε πενήντα δύο χρόνια στα Ιεροσόλυμα. Αυτός ο Οζίας ο βασιλεύς τιμωρήθηκε στο τέλος διά λέπρας, διότι επέτρεψε στον λαό να θυσιάζει σε μέρος που ο Θεός δεν ήθελε να θυσιάζουν. Ήταν υψηλό μέρος και εκεί δεν ήθελε ο Θεός να θυσιάζουν. Και ο βασιλεύς δεν πήρε αυτά τα μέτρα, να μην θυσιάζουν εκεί, και ελεπρώθη. Θα το ζητήσετε αυτό;
Είναι για τους ιερείς. Οι την γην οικούντες και αυτοί που ποιούνε τη διατριβή εδώ, τα εν ουρανοίς εκείνοις επετράπησαν. «Οὐ γὰρ πρὸς ἐκείνους εἴρηκεν, ἀλλὰ πρὸς αὐτούς». Δεν είπε; «Ὅσα ἂν λύσητε ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ἔσται λελυμένα ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ». «Ὅσα ἂν λύσητε ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ἔσται λελυμένα ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ». Έχουσι γαρ και οι κρατούντες επί της γης δεσμείν εξουσία. Και πιάνει ο αστυφύλακας και σε πάει μέσα, πιάνει ο εισαγγελέας και σε βάζει μέσα, αλλά σωμάτων μόνον. Ουχί δε και ψυχής. Κι άπερ εργάζονται κάτω οι ιερείς, ταύτα ο Θεός άνω κυροί, και την των δούλων γνώμην ο Δεσπότης βεβαιοί. Ο Χρυσόστομος τα λέγει αυτά τα πράγματα. Και ένας ομολογητής, Ιώβ, λέγει: «Ιεροσύνη εστί τάξις θείου μυστηρίου». Εσείς το καταλαβαίνετε;
