Summary

The Akathist Hymn, popularly called the Salutations, belongs to the distinctive practices of Great Lent alongside the Presanctified Liturgy and strict fasting, chanted in parts on each of four Fridays and in full on the fifth. The Alpha stanza contrasts the archangel sent from heaven to greet the Theotokos with the apostate angel who came uncommissioned through the serpent, so that joy shines forth where the curse had entered; Byzantine iconography accordingly gives her a scepter rather than the later Latin lily tied to the Immaculate Conception. The Delta stanza presents the power of the Most High overshadowing her and her womb shown as a fruitful field for all who freely will to reap salvation, since God never coerces human free will, and the account moves on to her journey to the hill country and Elizabeth's recognition of the mother of the Lord.

In this season, as you know, there are many things in our religious life that we don't do during the rest of the year — like the matter of the Presanctified Liturgy, like the matter of the strict fast,

and the matter of other services. Well, one more of these is what is called the Akathist Hymn. I don't know whether you have ever given it any thought. It is what people call, in plain language, the Salutations — something that is

about our Most Holy Theotokos, and our Church has it. It is chanted every Friday during these weeks of the Fast. For four Fridays the Church takes up one part of the Akathist Hymn, and on the fifth Friday — of the fifth Sunday, the fifth week of the Fast — it takes up the whole of the Akathist Hymn. It is something written on the pattern of the twenty-four letters of the alphabet. That is why in each stasis, as it is called in church language, it takes up six letters. For example, on the first Friday it went from Alpha through Zeta. Then, in the second stasis, this past Friday…

it went from Eta through Mu. Now in the third stasis, let's say, this coming Friday it will go from Nu to Sigma, and in the fourth stasis from Tau to Omega, and in the last week it will say them all together again, in brief. We Greeks, for the most part, are more devoted to the All-Holy one than we are to Christ. Everything, from a religious point of view, we hang more on the Theotokos (God-bearer) and less on the Lord. If something happens to us, we say, “My All-Holy One!” We don't say, “My Christ!”

If something happens to us we say that; we don't say, “My Father.” I don't know now how it is that emotionally we have been more bound to the Theotokos. She really is a person beyond explaining. For us Orthodox especially, she is a great chapter. But most of us don't know it, and we don't take counsel from it, and we don't make use of it in our lives as much as we ought to have. Within this season the person who stands first is our Lord Jesus Christ, who comes at the end of the season, on Great Friday, to go up on that Cross, and from there to descend into Hades, and to come up again to the earth through the Resurrection, and to be taken up in the Ascension.

The place immediately after that person belongs to the Theotokos. That is why in church matters we say that our Christ holds the primacy and our All-Holy one holds the second place. If a person could interpret the Akathist Hymn in its full breadth and depth, he would know the whole of the faith by heart — because the man who took this hymn in hand had to know the Old and the New Testament by heart, and Tradition as well. It really is very deep; there are many meanings in it, and it brings the whole of the doctrine up to the surface.

The Akathist Hymn is woven together with the Annunciation — that is, with the coming of Christ into the world from a Virgin. I don't know if you know that the Theotokos came and plays a role in the place of the first Eve, just as the Lord came and plays a role in the place of the first Adam. A couple appears there, and a couple appears here. That couple tore down; this couple built up again. What those two demolished in disobedience, the second two restored in obedience. And that is why,

from the very first letter of the alphabet, from Alpha, he speaks and sets things out in contrast with what happened back then. So when we spoke about the expulsion, we spoke about exactly how Satan carried out his sabotage against man. How he singled Eve out and won her over, and although it was one, they became two, and then those two dragged Adam along as well. That is exactly where this man begins, the man who wrote this Akathist Hymn, which is said to be the masterpiece of Christian literature.

There is nothing higher, where religious matters are concerned, than the Akathist Hymn. And he has, I might say, packed it out between the letters with certain “Rejoice”s — I don't know if you have noticed them. Out of the twenty-four letters, in twelve of them he says six “Rejoice”s each. That is, seventy-two “Rejoice”s in all, and the others are “Alleluia.” Where the one says, “Rejoice, Bride unwedded,” the other says, “Alleluia” — that is, Glory to God, God. And inside these “Rejoice”s there is a great deal of meaning, both moral and doctrinal. So one could say that, if a person wanted to interpret the Akathist Hymn at length,

he could take up a single “Rejoice” by itself, and on that one alone he could make those seventy-two homilies, quite apart from everything else. That is how serious the material inside this Akathist Hymn is — and it stays, as you know, left aside and covered over. Most Christians hold some little handbook in their hands, of the Salutations as we call them, some Synopsis, some Synekdemos, and they follow along, but they cannot go deep. And you know, when a person eats but doesn't assimilate what he eats, he isn't nourished, he has nothing to show for it; it is the same spiritually. You hear something, but you don't understand it, you haven't sorted it out inside yourself. What is this? What is it saying? What is it referring to? What is it trying to remind me of?

Otherwise you cannot be fed spiritually. So I thought that today, if your love would allow me, I would explain a few of these to you, so that you can see what is inside it and what he had in mind, the man who made this work of art, this masterpiece — I say it again — of Christian literature. It begins with Alpha, and we remember, some of us a little and some a lot, that it says, “An angel of the first rank was sent from heaven to say to the Theotokos, Rejoice.” He draws a distinction, as I told you, between the apostate angel and the first Eve; because the apostate angel, without being sent from heaven, came through the serpent, did his damage, and created sorrow and a curse in the world. And that is exactly why, in the very first “Rejoice,” he greets her and says this: “Rejoice, through whom joy shall shine forth.” “Rejoice, through whom the curse, the cursing, shall vanish.” That is, the things which the apostate angel, Satan, brought about through the serpent from the earth. Now the angel of the first rank comes. He is called “of the first rank” because he is a distinguished cherub, a distinguished angel before the throne of God, and he receives the command and comes to the earth to bring it to the Theotokos. This, after all, is what Byzantine iconography also calls to mind,

which depicts, as we were saying another time in another place, the Theotokos at the Annunciation holding a scepter in her hand and not a lily. The lily is a later placement on the part of the Roman Catholics, who make a dogma of the Immaculate Conception, the spotlessness of her conception. And as you know, the lily symbolizes chastity, virginity. But Orthodox Byzantine iconography wants the Theotokos with a scepter, because it finds that what the Holy Spirit says through David applies in this case: “Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline your ear, and forget your people and your father's house.” Listen to what I have to tell you, and you will see where I am going to bring you.

It is the guarantee of authenticity. That is why it says he was sent from heaven to say to the Theotokos, “Rejoice” — that she should rejoice where the other woman had grieved. But we should also bear in mind the text of the Annunciation, when he visited her there in Nazareth, where the place still exists to this day. He said to her, “Rejoice, you who are full of grace, the Lord is with you, blessed is the fruit of your womb,” and so on. He told her that she would give birth to the one who would sit on the throne of David, and this and this and this and this. But she had her objections, if you remember. Our All-Holy one said then, “How shall this be, since I know not a man?” Because, as we know, Joseph had not been given to Mary as a husband,

but as a protector for Mary, to cover her when she would be going about pregnant, so that she would not be stoned as an adulteress. Because the law said plainly that if a woman was found expecting without a husband, she was stoned. So, on the one hand, to prevent that, and on the other, to help her above all in the flight into Egypt — because when our Christ fled for some years into Egypt, hunted by the rage of Herod, by the sword of Herod, Joseph, as we can understand, played a serious role beside this girl of fifteen, with a child in her arms, and in a foreign land at that.

So Joseph had been given to these two. The Theotokos knows now, for her own part, that she has nothing to do — not now, not in the near future, not in the distant future — with marriage, with childbearing and things of that kind. And that is exactly why she said there, “How shall this be, since I know not a man?” The man I have has not been given to me as my man, as my husband, so that I should expect to bear children and give birth to the one who will sit on the throne of David, as you are telling me, and so on. And she raised her objections. And the hymnographer, keeping this incident in mind, in the second letter, in Beta — after what he said first — in the second letter takes up the position of the Theotokos and says:

“Seeing herself in purity, the holy one says to Gabriel boldly.” Are we following so far? She examines herself and sees that she has nothing to do with married life, with conceiving and with giving birth. “Seeing herself in purity” — clean, pure, spotless, honorable, upright. “She says” — she speaks with boldness to Gabriel and tells him: “The strangeness of your words is hard for my soul to accept.” What you are telling me, I do not accept it, I do not grasp it, I do not understand it, I hand it back to you. “From pure loins” — how is it possible for me to conceive and to receive? Tell me. I am pure, I am a virgin. This husband of mine I do not have as a husband — a husband in appearance, in reality a protector. Tell me. In other words, she takes up a defensive position over against a reality; as she faces it, as she lives it, she says it out loud, and she does not accept it. Even though it is flattering to her! Isn't it flattering to be told that she is the one full of grace among women? Think how people flatter us sometimes and tell us lies — because flattery is, for the most part, a lie. If it were reality, there would be no need to flatter us for something that is already there. They are encouraging us in something we don't have. And I say this over against the behavior of the first Eve, who sat down and struck up idle conversation with Satan, and liked what she heard on the one side and discussed it on the other.

If she too had sat down in that same way, we would not have this beautiful thing — the proof of her cleanness, her virginity, her purity; and the person who above all symbolizes these things is the Theotokos, the Virgin, the pure one. She did not accept it, and she leaves for us too an indirect help — for me it is direct, but let me call it indirect. Let us not easily accept things that trap us. Because Eve was trapped, and she brought about both her own death and the Crucifixion of God, through a conversation that perhaps seemed innocent. A conversation about knowledge: let me learn something unknown — as Satan taught her, that if she made use of this she would become God an hour sooner.

In any case, the position our All-Holy one takes, both the negative and the positive, is a help to us from two sides. On the one hand it teaches us morally, and on the other it teaches us doctrinally — namely, that the Theotokos had not taken Joseph as a husband. This is what the Theotokos is asking. But this is knowledge unknown, as he goes on to say. “Knowledge unknown,” he says, is what the Theotokos is asking to learn. Listen to exactly how he puts it.

“Seeking to know knowledge unknown, the Virgin cried out to the one who was ministering” — that is, to the angel who had been sent — “From pure loins” — from a virgin womb — “how is it possible for a son to be born? Tell me.” And he answered, as you know, when our All-Holy one said, “How shall this be?” The angel was not appointed to tell her how it would happen; he stopped at telling her what would happen: “The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you.” Besides, I was not sent to explain to you exactly how the conception will take place.

It is something beyond the power of man — and not only of man, but even of the angels themselves. Not even the angels are able to explain, or to take in, in what way the conception in the Theotokos took place. Because this conception was not to be the conception of a husband and wife, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, and so on. This is the one that is by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. Is it possible for a man to explain, to grasp, the divine uncreated energies of the Holy Spirit? You would have to be God in order to explain the things of God. Besides, the angel, as I told you, was sent to say certain words. It is only we human beings who run off and make up things of our own.

We add or we take away. The angels, it says, are “ministering spirits, sent forth to minister.” You will go and say this and this; you will go and do that and that. In keeping with this is what we chant in our Church: “Beholding the beauty of your virginity and the surpassing brightness of your purity, Gabriel cried out to you in amazement, O Theotokos: what praise can I offer you that is worthy?” and so on. Nothing. “I am at a loss and amazed” — I can tell you nothing. Well then, angel of God, will you say nothing at all? “I will say only what I was commanded, and cry out to you: Rejoice, full of grace.” That is what I was told; that is what I have to say. Of my own I have nothing to say. That, then, is the angel. I cannot tell you how it will happen. Because our Most Holy Theotokos is asking for the how. And the same thing happens with us. What is it we stumble over and reject? The how — because on the one hand we cannot understand it, and on the other it is not grounded in our logic.

We want to put all these mysteries through our logic, under our microscope. Everything that falls under our senses is, for us, real and acceptable. Everything that does not fall under our senses is to be rejected, as far as most people are concerned — unless we make use of faith. Because faith is a staff that carries a person where his knowledge and his senses cannot carry him. And when a person stops at the information his knowledge and his senses give him, he is a failure, at least as far as faith is concerned. And what is sad about us is that we do not demand this kind of proof and certainty in everything else we do; only in matters of faith do we demand proofs.

Never once, when they wrote on the board for a person and formed the letter alpha for him, did he ask why it is called alpha. Did anyone ever ask that? He took it as it was. When they wrote for him, “this is called beta,” did he ask why it is called beta? No. And why beta and alpha together make “ba” — did he ask? No. Those are the things you would have to ask about. He takes them as given, he accepts them as axioms, without anyone being able — no one has ever explained it — to say why it is called alpha. Read a dialogue our Christ had, as a small child, with a schoolmaster of that time. Of course this is not in the canonical Gospels; it is in the apocryphal Gospels. It is recorded there that an acquaintance of Joseph, a schoolteacher, wanted this, and said to him: I can see the child is clever — why not send him to me to learn his letters?

So he sent our Christ, still a small child, to learn his letters with this teacher. And Christ says to the teacher: hypocrite, you do not know what it means to say alpha. You cannot explain alpha to me, and you are going to teach me beta and all the rest? And there were other exchanges like that, and the man was forced to send the child away. Come, he says, take him back, because I cannot even look him in the eyes. Nor can I answer him. And yet we, I say, accept everything that lies outside of faith as a given — this is such-and-such, that is so-and-so, this is the definition — without examining it. Because if you wanted to examine everything, we would never even get through first grade; we would get nowhere at all, if we wanted to examine every single thing, why it is called this and why it does that, why iota stands for ten, why —

— nobody bothers to answer why; nothing. He takes it as given and moves on. And that is how a person advances in science, in knowledge, and gets somewhere. If each of us set out to examine other people's axioms, he would not manage anything in a million years; he would never even get through first grade. And yet he accepts it all, believes it all, holds it all as definitions, as axioms. But when we come to matters of faith, then it is: what is this man telling me? So it is a matter that a person rejects all on his own, to his own ruin. As I have said another time, we have not explained a single one of the things that surround us. They are all mysteries to us, and yet they are real — real mysteries. And this too is a mystery, but for certain people it is non-existent, impossible. A virgin gave birth and remained a virgin. How? What? By the Holy Spirit? I don't believe it, says the other man.

Without a man, he says — I don't accept that. You don't accept it without a man. Then who made Adam? Who is Adam's mother, and who is Eve's mother? What do you mean, you don't accept it without a man? Then you will bring me the ape and tell me the ape did it — but who made the ape? And so he creates a vicious circle for himself and rejects a great many things. And still man goes on, in the full twentieth century, demanding his proofs. What are man's proofs? They only underline the things man does not know. Today, my dear ladies, man ought not to flatter himself and be puffed up because he has made a few discoveries. He ought rather to be ashamed that he had none of them until now. Because he did not produce anything; he found things that were already there.

God is the craftsman. Did any of the scientists make these things? No. He simply discovered that they existed. And he ought to be ashamed that he had not discovered them sooner. The more they discover every day, the more it ought to humble a person. If there are so many things there and I did not know them, then how could I have claimed I was clever? If he had made something himself, if he had brought something from non-being into being — some law, some state of things — that I would understand. We would give him the credit and tip our hat to him. Otherwise he ought to be ashamed. And yet, because we have discovered things the Creator had made, we reject the Creator. That does us no credit. In any case, to come back: she is asking for something unknown, and that unknown thing the ministering one, as the Archangel is called, cannot offer her. That is why he stopped at “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” Of course, if you remember from the events of the Annunciation, he did bring her —

— reasonable arguments, human arguments. First of all he told her that she must bear in mind that for God nothing is impossible. You do not need a man to help you bring a human being into the world in the usual way. Besides, your conception and your childbearing will not be like the ordinary conceptions and the ordinary births. Because you will not be giving birth to a mere man. To give birth to a man accomplishes nothing; you would simply be adding one more man to a humanity that has always been in need of a Savior. You will give birth to someone else, in another way, someone who will be able to help humanity. Saint Gregory Palamas, whom our Church celebrated last Sunday, the Second Sunday of the Fast — you know he has this fine saying: if the Savior were from seed, He would be no new man and no Savior of sinners.

If the Savior, if Christ, were from the seed of a man — even from the seed of Abraham — He would be no new man, no genuinely new man, and no Savior of sinners. He would not be in a position to help anyone; He Himself would have needed a physician. That is precisely why it happened outside the ordinary way of conception and of coming into being.

Remember how the genealogy begins: Abraham begat Isaac, Isaac begat Jacob, and so on. The men beget, and the woman bears, yes? But when it reached the man who was reckoned to be Mary's husband, what did it say? “Of whom Christ was born.” It did not say “of Joseph.” “Of whom Christ was born.” Further down it explains itself: with Abraham, it was Sarah who conceived, and Rebecca with Jacob, and Rachel with the others there — but at Joseph it speaks of Mary.

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this way: before they came together, Mary was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.” And there is another detail, if you remember. When Joseph thought to put Mary away secretly — because when she came back from the hill country he found her with child, and so on — what did the angel say to him in his sleep? He says to him: do not do this. “That which is conceived in her” — not “that which was born of her,” but “that which is conceived in her,” that which was conceived within her; that is why it is put that way — “that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” A strange way, one that has never been repeated: what happened there neither has happened again nor should happen again. So, as I say, she is asking for an explanation, and the angel stands by this: this is what will happen. And when he told her, further, that —

— your kinswoman is in her sixth month. She is her cousin, because the mother of the Honorable Forerunner, despite her age — she is ninety-five and this girl is fifteen — is her first cousin; they are the children of three sisters. But that mother had no children, as you know, and gave birth very late in life. Later on, in due course, our Most Holy Theotokos was born — that is why, in spite of the difference in age, they are relatives. And so he says she is in her sixth month; this person was brought to her attention. Our Most Holy Theotokos held on to that. All of this was sorted out in her nous, her spiritual mind, in a single moment, and at that moment she said: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word.” That is: let it be, I surrender myself. I cannot understand these things, of course — let them happen as you say.

In the delta, the fourth letter, it says: “The power of the Most High overshadowed her who had never known marriage, unto conception, and showed her fruitful womb as a pleasant field for all who wish to reap salvation.” Her who had no experience of marriage. The Spirit overshadowed, it says, that womb of hers made ready for this, which it presents as a field that has been sown — and the seed now is not wheat, it is Christ. In a good field we reap the wheat to feed a life. Here, what will spring up from the sowing in the womb of the Theotokos is Christ. In the one case a man reaps life; here he reaps salvation.

— for all who wish to reap salvation. Whoever wishes to make use of the fruit of this field, of this womb, reaps salvation. God does not compel us, as we have said on other occasions. Man's free will is something that overcomes even God Himself.

If a man does not want it, God cannot. It is a paradox, of course, alongside the omnipotence of God — it is a paradox that a man should be able to bind God's hands. Of course, this is true for this age, not for the other. When things come to a close for a person, when the curtain falls and he passes along that path called death, then he will be in for some surprises.

There, where his free will no longer operates, he will be put in his place, he will be given orders — since here he gives orders even to God: I don't want you, I am shutting you out. I don't want to take you into account at all. And God acts as if He were not there. Because although He came to save the world, the world does not want to be saved. “He came not to judge the world,” it says, “but that the world through Him might be saved.” Not “to save the world” — “that the world might be saved through Him.” He leaves room for the human will as well. If a man wants it, he takes it and is saved. So at this moment which the hymnographer sets before us here, the angel had left her with child. Remember that the angel withdrew at once, as soon as our Most Holy Theotokos said those words, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word.” He withdrew — that is, the matter was finished. The angel left, and she was now on her own, alone face to face with herself, and she plainly begins a human conversation with herself. What was that?

Who was he, really? Was that person I was speaking with real? Strange things are happening inside me and to me. The anxiety, the ordinary human curiosity, plainly would not let her rest. As you know, for a woman to know for certain that she is pregnant, some time has to pass. She plainly did not have the time — or the patient endurance — to verify the matter, to see whether and how far she had in fact conceived in the way the Archangel had said. And what happened then? A few days later, says the Evangelist, “Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah.”

She entered the house of Elizabeth and greeted her; and when Elizabeth saw her, she said to her: how is this, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? She prophesies to her immediately. The Theotokos shows no sign of pregnancy yet, nor has there been any discussion anywhere. No one else knows about it except the Theotokos and Gabriel, the archangel who was sent. Not even Joseph knows about the matter. He too remained a stranger to the mystery. The proof is that he was taken by surprise afterwards, when she came down from the hill country three months with child. So she was holding on to this: your kinswoman is in her sixth month. And now she set out with haste. We might interpret that “with haste” like this: she put her head down — I am going to go and see. What was it he told me? The old woman up there is pregnant, at ninety, ninety-five, six months along? I am going to go and see. She hasn't the patient endurance. And do you know how far she walked, my dear ladies?

How far is it from Nazareth — from the place where the spring is, which is still there today, where Gabriel brought her the good news — to reach the hill country? Do you know? A hundred and fifty-five kilometers by today's reckoning. It is a hundred and forty-four kilometers from Nazareth to Jerusalem, and eleven or twelve kilometers from Jerusalem out to the hill country, to get to where Elizabeth was. How must that child have walked!

And there was no asphalt back then! They must have been goat tracks, rough footpaths. And how did she go alone, with no one to keep her company? It is really something. If we grant that she covered thirty kilometers a day, she would have needed at least five days. Where did she stay at night? At the inns, obviously — at the lodging places and so on. And she came with this determination, to see whether and how far that scene, or the reality of it, had taken on flesh and bones — what she had heard from the angel. And that revelation came the moment she arrived there; she found it all right in front of her. “How is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” — she calls her the mother of her Lord. So Elizabeth now made a prophecy. And a conversation followed — I don't know if you remember it — in which our Most Holy Theotokos said, how does she come to say these things?

She said: as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, when we kissed one another, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. John is six months old inside her, and in some fashion he leaped, he kicked, he jumped — "with leaps as though with songs," says the man who wrote the hymn, and I will read it to you — and from inside he greeted the mother of his Lord. Do you see now? When our Most Holy Theotokos went there, she found already waiting for her the very thing she had been turning over in her mind. Then she lifted up her hands and spoke what we call the Ninth Ode: "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior." That is what stands in the Ninth Ode, and she said it there, in front of Elizabeth. Because of that revelation, and because of that event in which she herself was an instrument, she said: "For behold, from now on all generations

shall call me blessed." And it is true: wherever there are Greeks, no matter how much or how little they believe, however flabby and watered down their faith may be, they revere the Most Holy Theotokos and they take her into account. In some way or another they will make some small observance on her feast day to honor her. "For behold, from now on all generations shall call me blessed." And anywhere on earth where there is Christianity and where there is a Church, these days are set apart for our Most Holy Theotokos. So then, once the conception had taken place in this God-befitting way, he moves to the fifth letter, which is epsilon, and he says: "The Virgin, having a God-receiving womb" — not a man-receiving womb, a God-receiving womb; she has God in her womb — "ran in haste to Elizabeth." She set out and went to Elizabeth. "And that woman's babe" — Elizabeth's John — "at once

recognizing her greeting, rejoiced. And with leaps as though with songs he cried out to the Theotokos." He jumped, he bounced, as we would say, inside her womb. Look at how a puppy runs to you and jumps up on you without being able to say a word. It makes certain movements, though, that show its joy — because it has seen us after we have been away for a while, or because we tossed it a piece of bread, something it liked in us — and it shows its joy through those gestures, those movements. That is more or less how he presents the Honorable Forerunner too: he leaped. That is, he made a movement inside such that the old woman took it as something joyful, in a manner of speaking. And since the Most Holy Theotokos had God within her, when she greeted Elizabeth she made her holy as well, and Elizabeth began to speak things that she herself certainly did not understand.

Yet she was speaking about matters that were real.

After epsilon comes zeta, and zeta is the sixth letter, yes? How long did our Most Holy Theotokos stay up there? She stayed three months. "And she remained with her about three months, and returned to her own house." After three months had passed she now returned to Nazareth, to Joseph. If we read what happens there, we will see that as soon as our Most Holy Theotokos left, the aged Elizabeth gave birth and bore John. Coming down the alphabet, the hymnographer sets before us the scenes and the events that took place when the Theotokos returned. This is the letter zeta. He says: "Having within himself a storm of doubting thoughts, of wavering logismoi, the chaste Joseph was troubled." When he saw this young girl three months along, Joseph's head began to spin.

He was thrown into confusion, because she had been given into his keeping by the clergy of the Church, where our Most Holy Theotokos had been kept for eleven years — given to him to guard her and protect her, because evidently her parents had died during the years she was in the temple, from the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple onward. That is why she was given to another protector. In any case, when he saw this, remember, his head spun, and he thought what we said a moment ago: to put her away quietly. Because otherwise he would have to come out and say, gentlemen, I have nothing to do with this girl. He would have to call on the testimony of the clergy who had given her to him under an agreement of protection, and say, I bear no responsibility in this matter. By the law she should have been stoned. But within him, clearly, a conflict arose

between his duty toward God, toward other people, and toward his own conscience. And that is exactly why the Evangelist Matthew says there: "being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, he thought to put her away secretly." That is, he thought of a third course. I will not hand her over, I will not keep her, and I will not have her stoned — I will not become the cause of her being stoned. I will take her out, I will send her away, I will remove her from my household, from under my roof. Because I cannot harbor this sin — being a righteous man — and he cannot come face to face with God. For when a person shelters and covers over fornication and adultery, woe to him on the day of judgment. It is as if he committed that sin himself. And let me take the occasion to tell you

— you grasp this too — if we were not so lax, if this sense in us had not gone blunt, the corruption we see today would not exist. This corruption is hatched inside our own tolerance, inside our own open-handedness. We are the ones who carry the secrets of lawlessness back and forth. We are the ones who keep up the correspondence, or receive it, or pass it along. We are the ones who do the same thing over the telephone. We are the ones who give our room, who give our car, who many times give money, who provide cover during the hours someone is away, lying that so-and-so was with us when they were not. You will say to me, would corruption disappear altogether? No.

But it would be cut down to the very least, because it finds the right climate, beginning with the schools. The schools are the most fertile ground for corruption, of the boys as much as of the girls. And today this state of things has flared up. Let me tell you something strange. In the schools now, here, in the gymnasia and the lykeia, there are anonymous circles of girls who have set up an association among themselves, with passwords they recognize each other by, and they collect money. And with that money they cover the abortions of their classmates.

Today you, tomorrow me. Next time her, the time after that someone else. These things are happening today in the gymnasia and the lykeia. You understand — organized, as it were, today. There is no risk that a friend will be short of money because her father will not give her any, and so on. They handle it among themselves; they serve one another. Instead of healing this sin some other way, they look to cover it up in this fashion. So I do not know whether you know this, whether you have caught on to it. We are the ones who make these situations easy, situations that before God are not honest, and one day an account will be demanded. We will find a great many of these hanging round our necks. We thought we were doing a good deed. We covered for one girl to go and throw it away, we covered for someone else to do this or that, to take her down there, and so on. We did nothing of the sort. However much we want to save someone's face, however much we want to stand by them

— on the contrary, we ought to make an effort to stand by him, to keep him on his feet, and not to give him the finishing blow. Not to say to him, never mind, I will cover for you. I will be there for you. This is the lesson that comes from Joseph, and Joseph will be, on the day of judgment — remember it — a witness for the prosecution. Joseph will stand there as an accuser, the man who says, it is impossible for me to harbor this, to cover over this corruption. Because within himself he was troubled, it says: "seeing you unwed, and suspecting a stolen union." Could he ever have imagined it, no matter what our Most Holy Theotokos said to him? Do people digest such things? Today, in the middle of the twentieth century, people do not digest them — how was he to digest it back then, when she was telling him, do you know that I am with child by the Holy Spirit? Had he ever seen such a thing, had he ever heard of it? How could such a thing happen — if it were even possible for him to conceive of it? This is a beautiful lesson. So I say that...

the arrival, or rather the return of our Most Holy Theotokos from the hill country to Joseph threw the man into confusion, tormented the man. The man was seized by a storm of doubting thoughts, of wavering logismoi, because he was a man of dignity, he was elderly, he was sincere, honorable, upright; a treasure had been entrusted to him, as they reckoned it, and in any case they had chosen him. The thinking was that only he would be fit to stand at her side — I doubt some young fellow of twenty-five would have done for a girl of fifteen — a man that serious, advanced in years, faithful toward God and righteous. So you can understand now what came over his face, over his features, as we say. The man's head spun, and he shook all over in that situation. But he goes on and he resolves the matter: "and learning of your conception by the Holy Spirit, he said: Alleluia. Glory to You, O God." When he learned it — how did he learn it? Through the angel I told you about. God did not delay, when He found Joseph

in that turmoil, thinking about when to send her out of the house so she would go. God turned toward him, He stopped him, and He says to him: Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid, do not shrink back and do not fear my law, to take Mary. No — "that which is conceived in her," born within her, is of the Holy Spirit. Besides, you are a man who reads, you are righteous, you know the law and the prophets. What does the prophet say about this very case? Does not Isaiah say in chapter seven, verse fourteen, "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and you shall call his name Emmanuel"? This is what he is speaking about. This is the mystery you are helping with at this very hour. This is what you are offering your service to; in this you are managing the whole situation. Do not be afraid. And then, as you know, he came to himself, in a manner of speaking —

Joseph found his balance, he made sense of it all, he put it in order within himself, and he kept her. And so the rest unfolds afterward: after about a year had passed — six months, rather — the order came, the decree that the census should take place, and they were found then, as descendants of David, of that royal line, because both our Most Holy Theotokos and Joseph are descendants of the royal line of David — they were found in Bethlehem, and she gave birth there, and you know the events surrounding Bethlehem.

Our Most Holy Theotokos took pains to persuade Joseph with arguments. She did not manage it. There are no rational arguments in a case like this. Of course our nature tells us many things, but they are not so easy to digest. We Orthodox, of course, see these things after the fact. Today we can see the power of the Spirit, that it is the Spirit who gives life. For example — I have told you this before, and if you like, try it yourselves. God accepts being handled and examined. God is not afraid of investigation. People are afraid of investigation; people are afraid of disclosure, of light and of truth. God is not afraid. The day after tomorrow

is the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross. It is the custom for the Honorable Cross to be lifted up and brought out for people to see it and venerate it, so that they may take strength to carry through the rest of the fast, and come at last to venerate Him crucified as well. It always comes out with flowers — with basil, with violets, with rosemary, all sorts of flowers that the faithful bring to church. They are blessed. The priest takes it, then, and carries it around, and afterward he gives the faithful a blessing from those flowers that have touched the Honorable Cross. So take a little of that flower. Take basil, if you want basil, or violets, or rosemary, or whatever else you like — take something that comes from there. And I say to you, take whatever you like, because what I am about to say, some people come and want to explain this away too.

If you put a little flour in a bowl with water and stir it, and set that flower on top of it, it will become leaven. That is, what did I say — leaven means it will produce a fungus. From here on I am stepping into your own field of science: it will produce a fungus. The grocer's flour, the dead flour, will produce life. Just as the yeast we buy has fungus in it and leavens the whole lump. When you go in the afternoon to uncover the bowl, you will see that this flour has a fine sour smell to it. And if you work it up again, as we say, with a little water and a little flour, that evening you will see it spilling over the sides. The housewife makes it into a prosphoron and takes it to church, and from it she keeps some leaven for the other prosphora she wants to make later in the year.

That dead thing is brought to life — by the power of what? Now take a violet from your flowerpot too, take rosemary from your garden too, take other basil, not blessed by the Church. Let us see: will it do this? Try it. It is something that falls within reach of our own senses. And for that very reason, let us pay attention.

ποτέ ο άνθρωπος, όταν του γράψαν στον πίνακα και του φτιάξανε το άλφα, γιατί λέγεται άλφα; Αυτό όλους τον ερώτησαν; Το πήρε όπως ήταν. Όταν του γράψαν αυτό λέγεται βήτα, σε ρώτησε γιατί λέγεται βήτα; Όχι. Και γιατί το βου και το α κάνουνε βα, ερώτησε; Όχι. Τα πρέπει να ρωτήσεις. Τα παίρνει ως δεδομένα, τα δέχεται ως αξιώματα, χωρίς να μπορέσετε — δεν τα έχει ερμηνεύσει κανένας — να πει γιατί λέγεται άλφα. Αν διαβάσετε ένα διάλογο του Χριστού μας, μικρός, με έναν διδάσκαλο τότε. Αυτό βέβαια δεν υπάρχει στα κανονικά Ευαγγέλια, υπάρχει στα απόκρυφα Ευαγγέλια. Αναφέρεται εκεί ότι επεθύμησε ένας γνωστός του Ιωσήφ, δάσκαλος αυτός, και του είπε: το παιδί το βλέπω ότι είναι έξυπνο, δεν μου το στέλνεις να το μάθω γράμματα;
