Summary
Continuing on the household, Dimitrios Panagopoulos gathers the counsel of the saints on what makes a marriage blessed. With Saint Ignatius the God-bearer he insists that a couple be joined with the blessing of the Church, since those who live together without it are not truly husband and wife, as Christ told the Samaritan woman (John 4:17-18); unions built on convenience or on the ruin of another household cannot receive that blessing. Following Saint John Chrysostom he explains that the crowns are given for a struggle of purity, so that those who enter unchaste risk carrying old habits into the home. The Theotokos is set out as the model of purity through Saint Andrew of Crete, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, and Saint Athanasius. Love understood as sacrifice builds the household; coldness and indifference destroy it.
