Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s fifth Mystagogical Catechesis introduces prayerful preparation for Holy Communion and thanksgiving after receiving the Mysteries. The Theotokia within the canon affirm the Theotokos’s indispensable role in the Incarnation and salvation, using images such as the burning bush, golden vessel, Ark, fertile earth, and pearl-bearing shell. The service concludes with Saint Symeon the God-Receiver’s Nunc Dimittis, expressing readiness to depart in peace after receiving Christ while challenging communicants to examine their spiritual preparation.

In the book of the Catecheses of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, in the next-to-last paragraph of his fifth catechesis—his fifth Mystagogical Catechesis—he speaks to us after giving some practical instructions on how to approach the Holy Chalice.

Then he says: “Afterward, having waited for the prayer, give thanks to God, who has counted you worthy of such great Mysteries.” Wait for the prayer, he says, so that you may thank God for counting you worthy of such great Mysteries. We shall see what this means. But we know that our preparation for receiving Holy Communion includes what is called the prayer—or, more precisely, the Service of Preparation for the Receiving of the Holy Gifts. A little later we shall see what Saint Cyril means by the word “prayer.” In any case, as preparation we also have this service, which can certainly itself be regarded as a prayer. As I told you last time, this service has four parts. It is found in the Great Horologion, as well as in separate little booklets containing the Service of Preparation for the Receiving of the Holy Gifts, and there we find...

This service also provides a way for the faithful to prepare to receive Holy Communion. As I told you last time, it is divided into four parts. The first part is read after the Creed at Small Compline. The second is read together with our morning prayers. The third is read in the Church shortly before we receive Holy Communion. And the fourth, if circumstances allow, is read afterward, either in the Church again or at home. The Service of Preparation for the Receiving of the Holy Gifts therefore has four parts.

I would like us to examine it—perhaps we might call this a literary and theological examination, if you will. We shall do so very briefly, just to gain a small taste of what this service actually is. Quite possibly, many people do not know what it is and do not use it. But even those who do use it can gain an overview, just as at school we make a literary analysis of a text in order to understand roughly what it is about. The first part, which we read at Compline, contains a canon with an acrostic based, of course, on the Greek alphabet. The stanzas...

of the Akathist Hymn have the same kind of acrostic: “The Archangel was sent,” beginning with alpha; “Seeing herself in purity,” with beta; “Seeking to know,” with gamma; then delta, “The power of the Most High”; and so on through the alphabet, from alpha, beta, gamma, and delta all the way to omega: “O Mother worthy of all praise.” This is called an acrostic: the first letter of each troparion follows the sequence of the alphabet—alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and so forth. Here we have similar troparia. There are slightly more than twenty-four because Theotokia, hymns to the Theotokos, are inserted among them. The second part contains what we read during our morning prayers.

It contains Psalms 22, 23, and 115, together with nine prayers. This second part of the Service of Preparation for the Receiving of the Holy Gifts is, we might say, the longest. These prayers are attributed to Saint Symeon the New Theologian...

and to Saint Symeon Metaphrastes. The third part, which we read shortly before receiving Holy Communion, contains verses by Saint Symeon Metaphrastes, three troparia, and a short prayer.

Finally, the fourth part, which we use and read after receiving the Holy Gifts, contains five short prayers. They are attributed to Saint Basil, Saint Symeon Metaphrastes, and anonymous authors—that is, authors whose names we do not know. The entire service concludes with the canticle of Saint Symeon the God-Receiver: “Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace.” Let us look at the first part and analyze it very, very briefly. This first part consists chiefly of the canon with the acrostic I mentioned. For example, under the letter delta we say: “Grant me drops of tears, O Christ.”

A “drop” here means a tiny droplet. So: Grant me drops of tears “to cleanse away the defilement of my heart, so that, cleansed with a good conscience, I may approach with faith and fear, O Master, to receive Your divine Gifts.” From the very outset, we see a request for tears to wash away the defilement of the heart, so that we may approach this most holy Mystery consciously and with a clear conscience. Farther on, under the letter nu, we read: “Sanctify my nous, my soul, my heart, O Savior, and my body.”

“Count me worthy, O Master, to approach the dread Mysteries without condemnation.” I should mention that this canon is also divided into odes: the first ode, the third ode—there is no second ode. I shall say nothing more about why there is no second ode. The reasons are technical, as are the details of how a canon is composed, and explaining them would take us too long. Here the sacred author who composed the prayer, and the person who reads it, addresses Christ and asks for the sanctification of his entire being: the nous, the soul, and the heart—understanding, feeling, and will, the three faculties of the soul.

Farther on he says: “Sanctify, O Savior, my body also.” Thus we have the three faculties of the soul—the nous, feeling, and will, that is, understanding, emotion, and volition—and also the body. Together these are nothing less than our entire being. We must understand something that Saint Cyril will also tell us at the end, in the final paragraph, and he expresses it very strikingly: Do we exclude our body from salvation, or from our care for salvation? Do we leave it outside the door? Strangely enough, we say, “We shall take care of our soul.” But we shall say more about this a little later, when we return to Saint Cyril.

Under the letter rho...

in the seventh ode, we read: “O Christ, may the receiving of Your immortal Mysteries become for me a fountain of blessings.” May the receiving of Your immortal Mysteries, my Christ, become for me a fountain of blessings—of truly great and good things: “light and life and apatheia, freedom from the passions; and may it bring about progress and growth in the most divine virtue, O You who alone are good, that I may glorify You.” A brief note: this particular canon is not chanted, but very often texts that are chanted contain punctuation marks. Take care: these punctuation marks serve the melody, not the syntax. This applies to all the troparia of our Church—every one of them. Do not try to translate or interpret a chanted troparion according to its punctuation—commas, periods, and semicolons—because you will get nowhere. The punctuation serves the poetry and the melody, not the syntax. Always remember this. The Body and Blood of Christ are indeed the fountain of every blessing, among which are...

the light of Christ, spiritual life, and apatheia, freedom from the passions. Apatheia does not mean indifference; it means the absence of the passions. The initial “a” negates the word “passion”: apatheia means no passion, no passions. That is apatheia. It certainly does not mean indifference, as the word is commonly used in our language today. The Body and Blood of Christ also impel us toward progress and growth in the most divine virtue, as the hymn says: “O You who alone are good, bring about progress and growth.”

Your Body and Your Blood, O You who alone are good, “that I may glorify You.” I now come to the letter chi in the ninth ode: “The Lord is good.” In Greek, chrēstos, written with eta, means useful or good, while Christos, Christ, written with iota, means the One who has been anointed, from the verb “to anoint.” It has no connection with chrēstos, “use,” or “I use.” They are two different words. Something may be useful; I do something useful. That is the sense of chrēstos. So, “He is good.” Who is good? Christ, written with iota. “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” The Lord is good.

“For having long ago become like us for our sake, and having once offered Himself as an offering to His own Father, He is ever sacrificed, sanctifying those who partake.” For our sake, He became what we are. Having once offered Himself as an offering, He was offered once for all to His own Father. Yet He is ever sacrificed, sanctifying those who partake; and in this way He sanctifies those who partake of the cup of life. Here, true knowledge of the Lord’s kindness and goodness is always hidden within—and is the fruit of—this tasting. Do you wish to see whether the Lord is good? You need only taste Him. It is a striking expression. It is geographical—

Scriptural, I mean. “The Lord is good” comes from Holy Scripture. This entire passage is from Holy Scripture. It tells you to use your senses—sight, hearing, and smell—in the experience of taste, so that you may discover how good the Lord is. When we see some food or a sweet, we cannot know what it is like—whether it is sweet or bitter, tasty or tasteless. We have to taste it. Taste the Lord, then, and you will see how wonderful He is. That is why it says, “Taste”—taste for yourselves. This is very significant because, in a certain sense, taste is a more immediate sense than sight or hearing. For I can hear...

a sound that has come from very far away. An image may also come from very far away. Taste, however, means that I put something into my mouth and bring it very close, so that I may acquire direct experience and thus say that the Lord truly is good.

Taste gives us certainty—certainty about the quality of what we are tasting. We must therefore acquire experience. The words “the Lord is good” are an invitation to lived experience. Unless you live Christ, you cannot know anything.

You cannot know anything. What did Philip say to Nathanael? “Come and see.” Then this experience is truly born within a person. My dear ones, if we do not acquire this experience, we must understand that we will never be able, should it be required of us, to face martyrdom. It is this experience that will sustain us...

This experience will keep us steadfast, no matter what harsh, wintry winds may blow against us, seeking to wither us, drive us away, and overthrow us. So let us take heed. This is where we must arrive: at tasting the Lord, that is, at an experiential life in Christ. I told you that the troparia of the canon are more numerous than the twenty-four letters of the alphabet. If you ask why, it is because Theotokia are inserted among them, and the Theotokia are not counted as verses in the acrostic.

But someone might say: since in this canon of preparation for receiving the Holy Gifts we address Christ, what place do Theotokia have in a purely Christological canon? Theotokia are those troparia that refer to the Theotokos. I think you already know that. And this is true not only of this canon of preparation for receiving the Holy Gifts. Without a single exception, every canon of our Church that has ever been composed, written, and chanted contains Theotokia. Why? You may ask: what place do troparia to the Most Holy Theotokos have there? The same place that the Theotokos has in our salvation. That is the answer.

What place does the Theotokos have in our salvation? She unquestionably has a place, because she became the cause of our salvation: she bore God the Word (Logos), gave Him flesh, and He became man. The Most Holy Theotokos therefore has a place in our salvation. And that is also the place of the Theotokia within these hymnographic canons. I would also like to tell you the following.

I have told you this before. Beyond the reason I have just explained for our chanting of the Theotokia—and to put it more fully—you must understand this: everything, absolutely everything, that is predicated of, that is, referred to, Jesus Christ is also predicated of and referred to the Theotokos. I said that slowly so that I might be understood. As I have told you, and as you know, a piece of cloth has both horizontal and vertical threads. We cannot speak of cloth made only with horizontal threads, nor only with vertical ones. In the same way, our salvation is woven—interwoven—with everything concerning Christ and everything concerning our Most Holy Theotokos. It is astonishing. I am not the one saying this; that is why I use the expression “is predicated.” The great theologians of our Church say it—Saint John of Damascus and others. I am not saying this on my own. Everything predicated of or referred to Christ is also referred to the Theotokos.

Consequently—if I may put it this way—we could not have been saved if there had been no Theotokos.

We could not have been saved if Christ were absent. Without Christ, we cannot be saved. Without the Most Holy Theotokos, we cannot be saved. For they are the threads of this interweaving that produces what we call the cloth; it gives us salvation. Neither Christ without the Most Holy Theotokos, nor the Most Holy Theotokos without Christ. These are not matters of sentiment; they are theological truths. The types that attribute the same predicates make this perfectly clear. What example shall I give you? The burning bush? What is burning there? The fire is God the Word (Logos), the divinity; the bush is the Most Holy Theotokos.

Or shall I tell you about the manna kept inside the golden vessel? Christ Himself spoke of the manna: “I am the manna that came down from heaven.” That manna which fell and fed your forefathers was a type—a type of Me. I am the true manna, kept within the golden vessel, the golden jar, which is the Most Holy Theotokos. What else shall I tell you? Shall I speak of the Ark, that most sacred symbol? What was kept within the Ark of the Covenant? The tablets bearing the Law, bearing the word of God. This is a symbol of the Word (Logos), God the Word. After all, it was He who gave the Law to Moses and wrote upon the tablets; and those tablets were placed within the Ark.

What, then, is the Ark—the golden Ark, made of wood and overlaid with sheets of gold? It is the Theotokos. Therefore, neither God the Word (Logos) without the Theotokos, however exaggerated this may sound, nor the Theotokos without God the Word. You see, then, that our salvation is interwoven with Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos. This is why we have the Theotokia; this is why we say all that we say about our Most Holy Theotokos; and this is why, in the service of preparation for receiving the Holy Gifts, you will find expressions about her such as these. The same is true in the Akathist Hymn. If you pay attention and study it, you will see this very clearly: “Good and fertile earth.”

“Which brought forth the untilled Ear of wheat.” You, the Most Holy Theotokos, are the earth, and you brought forth Him who was untilled. Why is He called “untilled”? Because He was conceived without the seed of man. Yet could a grain of wheat sprout upon a stone? No; there must be soil. And the soil is the Most Holy Theotokos. This is why I told you—now for the third time—neither Christ without the Most Holy Theotokos, nor the Most Holy Theotokos without Christ. We also hear: “Table of the Bread of Life,” and “womb of the noetic Pearl.” You know that a pearl is found in a particular kind of shell, a pearl-bearing shell. When a foreign body enters it, the creature inside the shell...

covers it with a pearly substance. We later gather those shells and remove what has been enclosed and separated from the creature’s body: the pearls familiar to us. So what does the hymn say here? “Womb of the noetic Pearl.” In other words, you are, as it were, the living creature; you are the shell. That is why it says “womb,” for within you the noetic Pearl was formed. “Venerable dwelling place of fragrance, God took flesh from your pure blood. I tremble as I receive the fire, lest I be consumed like wax and grass—the dread Mystery,” and so on. What, then, do we see here, my dear friends? We see that the Theotokos, like the bush I mentioned earlier, received God without being consumed; she is prefigured by that bush. This means that the person receiving the Holy Gifts asks that, just as the Theotokos was not consumed or set ablaze, he too may not be consumed by this communion in the immaculate Mysteries. And while we are on the subject, I would like to ask: when you receive the Holy Gifts, apart from the appointed service, do you give thanks to the Triune God?

Do not forget that it is the Triune God who accomplishes the Mystery. Do not forget: we must give thanks to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The Father wills it, for we address the Divine Liturgy to the Father. At the consecration we say, “And make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ.” You, the Father, change the bread into the Body of Your Christ, Your Son who became man. And what comes next? “Changing them by Your Holy Spirit.” This is exactly what happened when God the Word (Logos) became man in the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos. The Father wills; the Son is conceived in her womb through the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. What happened in the Most Holy Theotokos happens at every Divine Liturgy, so that we may have the Body and Blood of Christ. I say it again: I have told you these things before.

You know them. Please do not misunderstand me if I repeat them. And there is something more...

After giving thanks to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we also give thanks to the Most Holy Theotokos. We should thank each Person distinctly as the Triune God, and then thank the Most Holy Theotokos as well, because if she had not said, “Let it be to me according to your word,” God the Word (Logos) would not have come.

He would not have come, and we would not have been saved. Do not take this as an exaggeration. It is true. From the second part of the service, we shall select a few passages. Here is the third prayer of John Chrysostom: “O Lord my God, I know that I am neither worthy nor sufficient for You to enter beneath the roof of the house of my soul.” That house is me.

I am a dwelling. And so, beneath the roof tiles of this dwelling, I know, the prayer says, that I am not worthy for You to come. It is what the centurion said: “Lord, I am not worthy or sufficient for You to enter beneath my roof. Only speak a word, and my servant will be healed,” and so on. But why is the house of my soul so unfit? “For it is entirely desolate and fallen into ruin, and You have no worthy place within me to lay Your head.” This house that is to receive You—my house—is about to collapse; indeed, it has already collapsed. And “You have no worthy place within me to lay Your head”; You have nowhere fitting to rest Your head. The Lord said, “I have nowhere to lay My head.” Nor does He have such a place within my own being, because I am fallen...

In the second part there is a beautiful prayer written as a poem. It is by Saint Symeon the New Theologian. As you know, he wrote many poems. And let me say this as well—do not misunderstand me: whoever is in love writes poems, writes verses of love. And Saint Symeon was in love with Jesus Christ. That is why he wrote so many poems. They are included in his collected works. I imagine you may have read them. They have not been translated, although his discourses often are; his poems are not. So I shall read you one such prayer. It is a poem, which means that it has meter—it has rhythm. And I shall make an attempt at a translation...

that preserves at least a faint sense of that rhythm. Listen carefully—a faint sense of rhythm: “From defiled lips, from a filthy heart, from an unclean tongue, from a polluted soul, receive my supplication, O my Christ. Reject neither my words, nor my ways, nor my shameless boldness. Grant me the confidence to tell You what I long for; or rather, teach me what I ought to do and say. I have sinned more than the harlot, who, when she learned where You were staying, bought myrrh and boldly came...

to anoint Your feet, the feet of my Master and my God. As You did not reject her when she came to You with all her heart, do not abhor me either, O Word (Logos). But give me Your feet to clasp and kiss, and boldly to anoint with streams of tears as with precious myrrh. Wash me—wash me with my tears—and cleanse me with them, O Word. Forgive my offenses and grant me pardon. You know the multitude of my evils; You know my wounds and see my sores. Yet You also know my faith, see my eagerness, and hear my groans. Nothing escapes You, O my God, my Creator and my Redeemer...

not a single falling tear, nor even a part of a tear.” I shall omit a few lines. “But this I also know: neither the weight of my offenses nor the multitude of my sins, O my God, surpasses Your great forbearance and boundless love for mankind. With the oil of compassion, You cleanse and make radiant those who fervently come to metanoia (repentance); You make them sharers in the light and, in abundance, partakers of Your divinity.” Again, I shall omit a few lines. Now from the third part, from a prayer of John Chrysostom: “I believe, O Lord, and I confess.” You know it; it is the prayer we say shortly before receiving the Holy Gifts. Pay attention to this passage, for it is crucial: “I believe, O Lord, and I confess that You are truly the Christ.”

And I confess that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, “who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am first. And I also believe that this is truly Your immaculate Body.” Do you see? This very thing—this very thing, this very thing—is Your Body. What I am about to receive in a few minutes is Your Body. “And this is truly Your precious Blood.” What do we have here? The need to renew our faith shortly before Holy Communion, because the greatest sin is not to believe that this is the Body and Blood of Christ. And so there is this renewal and confession of faith, together with an awareness

of our sinfulness. The troparia that follow are verses from the third part of the service, along with a short prayer filled with divine love. Listen to some of the words and expressions we have selected, which show what I was telling you: I am captivated, longing, transformed, divine love, I am filled, delight, I leap for joy, I magnify, radiance, I enter, I enter together with You, bridal chamber, betrothal, Holy Matrimony, I cling, a kiss. All these words belong to the language of love.

The language of love. It is divine love. The abundance of these words reveals the longing of the soul, as a bride, for her Bridegroom, Jesus Christ. The parable of the wedding feast gives rise to such language. At the final moment, the soul fears that it might become a betrayer at the Mystical Supper. And so it repeats: “Receive me today, O Son of God, as a communicant of Your Mystical Supper; for I will not speak of the Mystery to Your enemies”—I will not reveal the Mystery to Your enemies—“nor will I give You a kiss as did Judas”; neither will I give You a traitorous kiss, as Judas did.

What does the traitorous kiss mean here? Sin alone is what betrays Christ. At the final moment, the soul is assuring Christ that it will remain steadfast in its love for Him. In the fourth part, we must give thanks. Indeed, from this thanksgiving the whole Mystery received the name the Holy Eucharist—the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Let us select a few passages from this part as well, from the prayer of Saint Symeon Metaphrastes: “Rather, pass into the very structure of my members, into all my joints,”

“into my kidneys and into my heart.” May Your Blood pass everywhere—everywhere: into my joints, my kidneys, and my heart. “Cleanse my soul; sanctify my understanding”—my mind—“and illumine the simple fivefold faculty of my senses”; illumine all five senses. “Nail my whole being fast with fear of You.” Nail my entire being fast—nail it with the nails of the fear of You. “Make me a dwelling of the Spirit alone,” and not a dwelling of sin. Make me a habitation of Your Holy Spirit—of Your Holy Spirit alone—and not a tabernacle and dwelling place of sin. Do you see what riches are found here?

This is why I have told you: if someone knows even a little Greek—ah, this condemnation of ancient Greek!—how greatly he will rejoice when he understands these texts. They are not difficult. As you see, they are simple. But if a person knows even a little ancient Greek, he literally delights in them. As I told you, the whole service concludes with the ode of Saint Symeon the God-Receiver, who said: “Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word, for my eyes have seen Your salvation,” and so forth. Does this mean, then, “Now I may die”—“now let Your servant depart,” now I may die—“because my eyes have seen Your salvation, the Savior of the world”? In other words, we say it as though we were saying to Christ: “Now, Lord, I can die, because I have received Your Body and Your Blood.” But can we truly say this?

Can we say such a thing? Have we been sufficiently and worthily cleansed? Are we in a proper state to say it? I fear that many times we might not be able to say it. Yet may we be able to say it. My beloved, this was a brief analysis of the Service of Holy Communion. And now let us see what Saint Cyril has to tell us as he comes to the end. What did we say about the prayer? Saint Cyril says here: “Then wait for the prayer.” After waiting for the prayer, he says, give thanks to God, and so forth. “Then wait for the prayer. Give thanks to God, who has counted you worthy”

“of such great Mysteries”—Mysteries so great. Give thanks to the Lord. What is this prayer? I told you earlier. Methodios Olympiotis, who produced a translation of the five Mystagogical Catecheses—published by the Apostoliki Diakonia; you can obtain it, for it is a fine, concise little book with some notes below by both Methodios Olympiotis and the editor of the volume—maintains that this is the prayer of dismissal. Indeed, many people are impatient to get up and leave before the dismissal of the Divine Liturgy. You will see this on Great and Holy Thursday and Great and Holy Saturday. People receive Holy Communion and leave. What a terrible thing!

But we have an office to go to; we have a factory to go to. The Liturgy is celebrated in the morning so that people may receive Holy Communion. Yet they do this even when it is not Great and Holy Thursday or Great and Holy Saturday. There is an impatience among people: they do not wait for the dismissal but get up and leave. This is also disorderly conduct. Likewise, during the distribution of the antidoron—the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy—another prayer is said: “May the blessing and mercy of the Lord come upon you.” “May it come”—epsilon-lambda-theta-omicron-iota—upon you. This means: may the blessing and mercy of the Lord come upon you. How, then, will you receive this blessing, bestowed through the priest’s prayer from the Lord, if you have already risen and left? Or how could you receive this blessing if you took the antidoron—a most deplorable custom—

from the candle stand? Do we imagine, my brother, that the parish wardens standing there will give you the blessing with their hands? Obviously not. You must wait your turn to receive the antidoron from the priest’s hands, so that you may also hear the prayer: “May the blessing and mercy of the Lord come upon you.” Moreover, the exhortation “wait for the prayer” may refer to the prayer at the end of the Divine Liturgy for those who have received Holy Communion—and in earlier times, of course, everyone received. Listen to it. It is a brief thanksgiving: “We give thanks to You, O Master and Lover of mankind, Benefactor of our souls, for on this present day also”—which means that they received Holy Communion every

day—“for on this present day also You have counted us worthy of Your heavenly and immortal Mysteries. Make straight our path; establish us all in the fear of You; guard our life; make firm our steps, through the prayers and supplications of the glorious Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary and of all Your Saints. Amen.” Once again, the intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is included. Here, then, in this prayer, we have in the briefest form the thanksgiving of the whole Church to God for counting us worthy to become communicants and partakers of these precious Gifts. Furthermore, the exhortation “wait for the prayer” could also refer to the fourth part of the Service of Holy Communion. This part, of course, is not read in parishes,

but it is read in monasteries. That is why those who receive Holy Communion remain at the end and listen to the fourth part of the Service of Holy Communion. Thus, as you see, while we distribute the antidoron, at one point we say, “For Yours is the Kingdom,” which is said by the priest; or we say, “Lord, now let Your servant depart,” also said by the priest; and then the dismissal follows.

Saint Cyril says the following as he proceeds to the twenty-third and final paragraph: “Hold fast to these traditions without stain, and preserve yourselves without stumbling. Do not cast yourselves away from communion; do not, through the defilement of sins, deprive yourselves of these sacred and spiritual Mysteries.” In other words, hold these traditions uncorrupted and preserve yourselves without stumbling. Do not separate or cast yourselves away from the precious Gifts or from the Church

through the defilement of sin, and do not deprive yourselves of the Mysteries. “And may the God of peace,” and so forth. “Hold fast to these traditions without stain.” He is speaking, then, about holding fast to traditions. What are traditions? Tradition is what one generation hands down to the next. Therefore, when we receive something from the preceding generation, we receive what was handed down to us; and what we give to the following generation is that very same thing—the Tradition. The Christian Tradition is a relay race through the generations. You have seen a relay race, in which one runner passes the torch with its flame to the next, and that runner to the one after him, and so on. This is Tradition. As I told you, it is a relay race through the generations, and its starting point is our Lord Jesus Christ. Tradition begins with Him. The Apostle Paul writes: “For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins.” I handed down to you what I received. Do you see the expression? I handed down to you what I received. What did he receive? That Christ died for our sins.

And whatever else was handed down. This is in 1 Corinthians 15:3. The Apostle Paul also says to the Corinthians: “And just as I delivered them to you, hold fast to the traditions.” As you see: hold fast to these traditions just as I delivered them to you. What does “hold fast” mean? It means something more than merely “have.” To have means simply to possess something. To hold fast means to keep a firm grip on it. The prefix in the Greek word intensifies the idea of holding: I possess it, I keep hold of it, I grasp it tightly. To the Thessalonians the Apostle Paul says: “Brethren, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions”—hold fast to the traditions—“which you were taught, whether by word or by our epistle,” whether orally or by a letter we sent you. Take note: we will not exhaust the subject of Tradition, because it is an immense subject. We are merely offering a brief comment on what Saint Cyril says. “Now we command you, brethren”—we command you—“in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which they received from us.” If any brother acts disorderly, he says, and does not accept the Tradition, keep away from him, because that person tramples the Tradition underfoot. In the Apocalypse, the Lord Himself said to the Church in Thyatira,

after saying certain things beforehand: “Hold fast what you have until I come.” This is beautiful and powerful, expressed in only a few words. Hold fast to what you have. From whom did you receive it? From Me. How long must you possess it and hold fast to it? Until I come—until I return. Therefore, Tradition is what the Lord handed down to us at His first coming and what we must hand back to Him at the Second Coming. This is Tradition. It is a great matter. But where are those people? Some people immediately begin talking dismissively about “traditions” and many other things. Yet, as I told you, we are not analyzing the whole subject, but merely commenting on it. In other words, the traditions must be preserved throughout all time.

We cannot say, “Oh well, these are old traditions and have no value today,” since “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Again, in the Apocalypse, He says to the Church in Philadelphia: “I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have.” I am coming quickly; keep a firm hold on what you have. Indeed, He then says—I did not write it down—“so that no one may take your crown.” That means: do not lose your crown. When will you lose your crown, the crown that is the Kingdom of God? When you fail to hold fast to what the Lord handed down, when you let it go, you will be lost. And these traditions, Saint Cyril now tells us, must be kept without stain. Take note:

Saint Cyril is handing down the Tradition. Yes, notice that his entire catechesis is nothing other than Tradition. What he received, he hands down. Yes, his twenty-four catecheses are a handing down of the Tradition. And what does he say? He says that we must hold fast to them, that the traditions must be kept unstained—that is, unadulterated. And these traditions do not refer only to doctrines, but also to our moral life. Saint Cyril did not teach us only matters of doctrine, but also matters of conduct. When, for example, we speak about sexual immorality, that is not a question of doctrine but of moral conduct. You cannot defile the temple of God—though I might even say that moral conduct ultimately leads us back to doctrine.

But let me not go into that now. We must preserve both the Tradition of doctrine and the tradition of Christian moral conduct. Our moral life flows from doctrine and leads back to doctrine. They are not separate things, as I have told you. Regarding sexual immorality, does not the Apostle Paul say: Do you not know that you are a temple of the Holy Spirit? What, then, do we see here? We see, my beloved, that...

you must preserve Christian moral conduct in order to preserve doctrine. “Do not lie to one another.” Lying is a matter of conduct. Why must we not lie? “Because we are members of one another.” That is doctrine. And so forth. Many times, we regard as a heretic the person who departs from doctrine, yet we do not regard as a heretic the person who departs from Christian moral conduct. Someone who falls into sexual immorality is a heretic: he departs from Christian moral conduct and from doctrine. This is why Saint Cyril says: “And preserve yourselves without stumbling.” Preserve yourselves, he says, without giving cause for scandal—that is, live a blameless, clean, and pure life. And Saint Cyril also says: “Do not, through the defilement of sins, deprive yourselves of these sacred and spiritual...”

“Do not deprive yourselves of the Mysteries.” Do not sin and thus become unable to receive Holy Communion, because sins are impediments; they prevent us from participating in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Sadly, both unmarried and married people live amid these impediments. Before marriage, some rush into sexual immorality; while those who are married do improper things within their marriage, and so remain far from Holy Communion. This was the purpose of Saint Cyril’s Catecheses: knowledge of the faith’s doctrine and an exhortation to live a pure life. Sound catechesis must not merely provide information; it must also guide us toward a spiritual life.

Saint Cyril also says: “Do not cast yourselves away from communion.” Do not separate yourselves from the Mystery of the Eucharist or from the unity of the Church. Those who do so are members of the Church who wither and are cut off, according to the words of the Lord: “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away.” Then he says, “May the God of peace”—and this is how he concludes—“May the God of peace sanctify you completely, and may your whole body, soul, and spirit be preserved at the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” In other words, may the God of peace sanctify you entirely, and may your whole body and soul be properly preserved until the Second Coming of

our Lord Jesus Christ. Something worthy of note here—and it speaks to the honor of these Sacred Catecheses—is that Saint Cyril refers to the whole human person. He speaks of both soul and body. Today we speak about the soul, as I told you earlier, but sadly we fail to understand the significance and value of the body as well. A human being means soul and body together. The Resurrection provides for the complete restoration of the whole human person, and the whole person must be preserved sound and whole until Christ’s Second Coming. My beloved, we have now reached the end. We must thank and glorify the holy Triune God,

who gave us the opportunity to hear these wonderful Catecheses of Saint Cyril: the Procatechesis, the eighteen Catecheses for those preparing for illumination, and the five Mystagogical Catecheses—twenty-four in all. The five Catecheses were delivered after the Baptism of those who had been prepared for illumination, in AD 350. Our study of them was a true revelation for us, a true Christian education. This study was completed in 210 lessons over ten years, from December 6, 1982, until today, April 13, 1992.

Let us also thank our wonderful father, Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem, whom the Church commemorates on March 18. Among other things, the patristic scholar Bonis writes of him: “We may say that the Catecheses constitute the dogmatic and moral constitution of the Church, or her liturgical charter. The pedagogical value of the work is likewise beyond measure, especially the educational method of catechesis employed by its experienced author. The Catecheses therefore constitute a model of Christian upbringing and formation.” And what can we say? How shall we conclude? With the words of Saint Cyril: “May the God of peace sanctify you

completely, and may your whole body, soul, and spirit be preserved at the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory unto the ages. Amen.”

Να γιατί σας έχω πει. Ξέρει κανείς λίγα γράμματα, αχ αυτή η καταδίκη των αρχαίων ελληνικών, πόσο θα χαρεί κανείς άμα καταλαβαίνει αυτά τα κείμενα. Δεν είναι δύσκολα, βλέπετε, απλά είναι, αλλά να ξέρει όμως λίγα γράμματα, να ξέρει λίγα αρχαία, τα απολαμβάνει κυριολεκτικά. Η όλη ακολουθία, όπως σας είπα, κατακλείεται με την ωδή του Αγίου Συμεών του Θεοδόχου, που είπε: «Νῦν ἀπολύεις τὸν δοῦλόν σου, Δέσποτα, κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου, ἐν εἰρήνῃ, ὅτι εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου τὸ σωτήριόν σου» κτλ. Άραγε, δηλαδή, τώρα να πεθάνω, νυν απολύεις, τώρα να πεθάνω, γιατί είδαν τα μάτια μου το σωτήριό σου, το Σωτήρα του κόσμου. Δηλαδή, το λέμε εμείς σαν να λέμε στον Χριστό: «Τώρα, Κύριε, μπορώ να πεθάνω, γιατί πήρα το σώμα σου και το αίμα σου». Άραγε όμως;
