Summary

In this eleventh lecture, Fr. Athanasios completes the letter to Ephesus and turns to Smyrna in Revelation 2:1-11, with reference to John 20:17, James, the Beatitudes, Matthew 25, and Revelation 6:8. He explains the promise of the Tree of Life as access restored by Christ's Incarnation after the Fall, and defines victory as resistance to doctrinal and moral deviation, including the Nicolaitan errors and the loss of first love. Smyrna is presented as a persecuted church receiving no rebuke, addressed by Christ as the First and the Last who died and came to life. The bishop is identified as probably Saint Polycarp, successor of Boukolos, and the Christian path is summarized through works, tribulations, and poverty.

It melts away.

The Lord's letter to the Church of Ephesus comes to a close with what is, more or less, a refrain repeated in each of these letters: to the one who conquers, I will grant to eat from the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of My God. To the one who conquers, to him I will grant to eat from the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of My God, says Christ.

I told you that this refrain is repeated like a chorus, with some small variations, with characteristics that match each of those variations, in every one of the letters. Namely, that to the one who overcomes, in the struggle against Satan, to him it will be given to taste the taste of the Kingdom of God.

And the guarantee of this victory is the victory of Christ Himself and our faith in Him. The tree of life which the Lord promises is the very fruit that was withheld from our first-formed parents, who left Paradise and were barred from it, or rather, who were sent out precisely so that they would be prevented from tasting from the tree of life.

The word xylon here means a tree, the tree of life, so that they would not become immortal, as the Fathers explain when they interpret: lest evil become immortal. And as you can see, the gate of Paradise remained untrodden and shut. In other words, death entered in.

But now the fruit of the tree of life is offered by this same Christ, who opened the way that leads into the Paradise of God. When He says of My God, this corresponds to something similar that He had said in the Gospel of John.

I am going up, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God. This refers to the human nature of Christ, who, as the God-Man, opened the gate of Paradise. For as God, it would be a strange thing for Him to open it, or not to open it, since God Himself was keeping the human race far from immortality, far from eternal life.

The incarnate Son of God, that is to say the human nature of the Lord, is the one who struggled and led the human race once again into the Kingdom of God. But in what must each of us struggle in order to conquer?

In exactly what the letter we read and analysed in our last two sessions speaks of. It is nothing other than the rejection of, and the struggle against, every doctrinal and moral deviation, and the holding fast to that first and proper love which the Lord rebuked them for letting go, when He said: you have abandoned your first love.

Of course you understand that the promise Christ makes here stands against those permitted pleasures the Nicolaitans allowed themselves, the ones whose works the Lord said He hates. And so, my beloved, the first of the seven letters of the Apocalypse comes to a close, and with God's help we now enter the second letter.

The second letter is addressed to the bishop of Smyrna. We feel a particular emotion when we hear about these cities that are so close to us, not merely close to us geographically, not only Greek cities. They lie right across from us; if you were to go up to the peak of Mount Kithairon here and let out a strong shout, your voice would be heard in Smyrna, right across, to the east. Smyrna lies right opposite, and many, many of you came from Smyrna. This sense does not strike a Chinese person reading the New Testament, or a Japanese person, or an African, or an American in the same way. We also have this great privilege, that all of these great truths of the

That the truths of the Lord, the God of heaven, have taken on material, have taken on color from these very places, from this Mediterranean Sea, from this Greek land here, from Asia Minor, and so on, is something especially moving.

This letter to the bishop of Smyrna says the following. And to the angel of the Church in Smyrna write: These things says the First and the Last, who became dead and lived. I know your works and your tribulation and your poverty, but you are rich, and the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Fear none of those things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death. That is to say,

And to the bishop of the Church of Smyrna, write, says the Lord to John the Evangelist. These are the words of the one who is the first and the last, who became dead and lived again. I know your works and your tribulation and your poverty, yet you are rich; and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews, but they are not; they are a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you may undergo temptation and testing. And you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death. Smyrna, as I told you earlier, is a Greek city, and its name is Greek. It lies eight miles north of Ephesus, the previous church to which the Lord sent a letter, and it comes to the south of the other city, Pergamum, to which city too the Lord sends a letter. So it lies in between the two cities, Ephesus and Pergamum, and it competes in every field, both commercial and cultural, with Pergamum and Ephesus.

In Smyrna there was a Jewish synagogue that was hostile toward Christianity, and it is largely because of that synagogue that this letter to the Bishop of Smyrna deals, in great and important part, with it. The letter to the Bishop of Smyrna, together with the letter to the Bishop of Philadelphia, are the only two letters that contain no reproof. This one holds only praise. There is no charge against it at all. Only praise. These are letters full of praise and of consolation.

The first bishop of Smyrna was Boukolos. The successor of Boukolos, and most probably the recipient of the letter, is the Apostolic Father and hieromartyr, Saint Polycarp, who was martyred on the 23rd of February in the year 155.

This letter to the Bishop of Smyrna is a classic example of consolation for the heroes of the faith. "These are the words of the First and the Last, who died and came to life again." This title, this name given to Christ, the one who sends the letter, is drawn from the opening vision that we examined some time ago, and it ties in with the whole content of the letter that follows. For the message speaks of persecutions, and therefore of martyrdom and death as well; and so those who are about to endure martyrdom and death should have no fear, because the one who sends them this letter, the one for whose sake they undergo death and martyrdom,

He is the one who became dead, yet lived again. In other words, what do they have to fear? Death can do them no harm at all. They will rise again, through the life of the incarnate Son and Word (Logos) of God. Saint Andrew of Caesarea writes: he is first as God, and last as man, having come to be at the end of the ages, and through his three-day death he opened eternal life to us. Indeed, what does it mean, 'I am the first and the last'? He is called first as God, and last as man. For he is first as the one who exists before all beings; and last with respect to his human nature, because he took that nature upon himself only afterward.

a human nature, a created nature, taken on afterward. But there is more. "The First and the Last" is nothing other than an echo of the Alpha and the Omega, the "I am" that he had told us in the prologue of the epistle: I am the Alpha and the Omega, that is, the beginning and the end, the First and the Last. I who hold within myself everything that is the beginning, everything that is first, everything that is last, of all created things. All things exist in me, God. I have seen your works, and your tribulation, and your poverty, yet you are rich. I know your works, and your tribulation, and your poverty, but you are rich. Of course, at first glance it looks like the thing is an oxymoron: how can he be rich, when he is poor?

He says, I know your poverty, yet you are rich. Perhaps someone who concerns himself only with money and has no spiritual horizon at all, who does not even know the language of allegory, might say here, maybe he had some money hidden away somewhere. He was reckoned poor on every count, and now the Lord tells him, I know, you are poor, yet you are rich.

Do you have things hidden away, do you have deposits in the bank? Obviously this isn't what He's saying. You are poor, I know that, you are poor; so I know your works, I know your tribulations, I know your poverty too, and yet, I will show you this: you are rich.

Here we have a threefold picture, a triptych, of the Christian journey toward holiness, and I would ask everyone to pay very close attention to it, because this is the journey of the Church, the journey of the faithful. And let me ask one more thing: when you hear these words, do not say that they are meant for a few special people; they are meant for all of us. What is this triptych? It is the works, the afflictions, and the poverty. When the Lord says, 'I have seen you, I know you,' it means that the Lord knows our works. And what are these works? They are the pastoral labors of the bishop in the city of Smyrna; they are the works of love and charity; but they are also the works of the Kingdom of Christ upon the earth. And if you will, they are not only works in the narrow sense of the word. Truly, the sense of that word is far too narrow.

When we speak of works, we say that almsgiving is a work; we say good works, charity, doing good, almsgiving. But works are also the way of life and the conduct of the believer. Let us be clear about this: someone may not have the means to do works of charity, that is, to give alms, to give money, or to go up and down the stairs of offices and ministries to sort out the affairs of people in need. He may be confined to his bed, he may be a suffering person, and yet he can still have works. And what are these works? They are his way of life and his conduct, the manner in which he lives.

These, in the broad sense, are the works of the faithful person. One day the Lord will say to us, beloved, I have seen your works, I know your works. Which ones? The way you lived, how you thought, how you spoke, how you moved, whether you carried within you philanthropic dispositions, even if perhaps you didn't have the means to put those philanthropic dispositions into action. How many times do we see people we want to help, but we can't; yet we have the disposition within us. Sometimes we may even weep over this and say, 'My God, look at the people, look, it has snowed, it is cold, there are people in tents, or earthquake victims, or fugitives, or refugees, or people without shelter, and no one cares.' Look at the birds, the sparrows that can find nothing to eat because there is so much snow, and one sees them and says, 'Lord, ah, these little birds are suffering because I, the human being, am to blame.'

If I had not sinned in Paradise, creation would not be suffering at this hour. So if this condition exists within creation, it is because I, the human being, am to blame. Tell me, are not all of these works? Are they not philanthropic expressions, philanthropic dispositions?

And if someone, if you will, opens the window and puts little crumbs on the windowsill and waits for the little birds to come, the little sparrows, because mostly sparrows, mainly sparrows, we have now in the winter, and other little birds too, but mainly these are the most common ones here around our homes, for them to come and eat the crumbs, isn't that philanthropy for you? Isn't it?

Believe me, truly, when we say 'works,' don't let your mind go, I told you this as an example, when we say 'works,' don't let your mind go to the idea that one has to spend money, build homes for the elderly, infant homes, orphanages, and so on. No, beloved. It is the life and conduct of the person.

So God knows the works of every person and of the churches. The second element of the triptych is tribulation. It is the condition created by adverse and anti-God powers on account of the presence of the works of God.

It is the envy and the violent opposition of Satan. When the devil and the people of the devil, the instruments of Satan, when they see the works of the person, then they envy, then they attack, they create issues, they create problems.

These tribulations, which are created by the attacks of the devil and of envious people and of unbelieving people, these are the tribulations that the faithful person endures. Know this, we were saying it the other time, it is impossible to be truly faithful and not to have tribulation.

The Lord Himself confirmed it: in the world you will have tribulation. In the world you will have tribulation. This is not the tribulation that comes from our own sin. That is worldly tribulation. Nor is it the sorrow I would suffer from a failure of mine or from some loss.

I lost a job that would have made me money; I lost money along the way; my house was robbed; I suffered a loss; an earthquake came, a flood that destroyed my fields, my harvest. These tribulations are not according to God, they are according to the world. If you have such a tribulation, you do not receive the Kingdom of God. But if you have tribulation from the work of God, precisely because you are living according to God, and it provokes, as I told you, the envy, the hatred, the malice of Satan and of men, and they create things for you, problems.

Then you are blessed. But if you want me to extend the point further: even when someone bears the tribulations that come according to the world, the floodwaters carried off my harvest, my house collapsed in the earthquake, and I do not fall, listen carefully to this reality, the brother was telling me this, he is present here, I do not fall flat on my back to curse God with my hands and my feet, to blaspheme God. When I heard him say it, I shuddered. But what then? I do not grumble. Then what was worldly tribulation takes on spiritual dimensions, and then it counts, it weighs in eternity. Just as blasphemy and grumbling also count in eternity. And I come now to the third part of the triptych of the Christian journey,

of the Christian path. It is poverty. And on this I will dwell at some length. And I ask you, please, many of you, pay close attention. What is poverty? First of all, it is material poverty. Let me make this clear. It is purely material poverty. It is characteristic that the element of poverty has two positions in the Gospel. The first position is the seeking out of the poor and the relief of poverty by tending to the needs of those who bear it. In other words, poverty is something evil that must be remedied.

Saint James, the Brother of God, writes in his second chapter: If a brother or a sister be naked, and destitute of daily food. Some brother, some sister, some woman that is, are cold, they have no clothing to put on, and beyond that they have no food, no daily bread, their everyday food, I mean truly day-to-day food, nothing stored away, no stockpile. And one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and be filled, but you give them none of the things the body needs, then what good is that?

It is what we mean when we say, I feel sorry for you, my friend, what can I do for you, well, may God bless you, may God keep you well. We do not criticise the other person, we do not insult him, we do not say to him, get up and leave, we do not shut the door in his face in the sense that we have no sympathy for the poor man. We say these words to him, but we give him nothing. Look, Saint James the Brother of the Lord also says, Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction. Do not just say it, show the thing in deed. That is, see to it that you cover, that you remedy, the needs that poverty creates. And the most striking thing of all is that the criterion of our entry into the Kingdom of God is love in the form of philanthropy, of active charity.

What does the Lord say? For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me. And although these words of the Lord express the lowest rung of love, even so they are an expression of love, and they constitute the criterion of the judgment on the last day.

The conclusion, therefore, is that we are obliged to remedy the evil of poverty. Why? Because poverty in itself is something evil. Listen to what I said: poverty in itself, on its own, that is, considered in itself, is something evil. It is a bodily evil. And it is the result of the moral evil. That which I spoke of earlier.

The little birds suffer because I am the one responsible that death, that corruption, was introduced into creation, through the moral evil, the turning away of man from God in the person of Adam and Eve, and afterwards through the personal sins of the descendants of Adam.

As we see, drought, the barrenness of the earth, all these are nothing other than a state of curse, whereas, on the contrary, the fruitfulness of the earth is a blessing. Because of this barrenness of the earth, which is also the cause of poverty, we say, this year, this year there is no wheat, this year there is no oil.

And unfortunately this is not something limited only, let us say, to Greece. Nor can famine be caused, especially if we have a disaster in just one province. In Thessaly, for example. But when it covers the whole of Epirus, when we have the phenomenon of drought across our planet, then the famine is worldwide and very serious. What do we do then? We pray to God to lift, to take away this barrenness, this curse, this drought, and so on.

In the Divine Liturgy, as also in the Mystery of Holy Matrimony, what do we pray, what do we say? For the abundance of the fruits of the earth, we pray for seasonable weather; and at the wedding we say, for the filling of these storehouses with every good thing. That is, we pray that the newly married couple may have their pantry full of good things, and we pray this officially, we beseech it. It is not a simple wish, it is prayer; we beseech God that the pantry of the newlyweds may be full, that they may lack nothing.

So we see, my beloved, that the matter of poverty is a serious matter, and for this reason we beseech God that it may not exist. Besides, hunger is a plague. So that I need not run through Holy Scripture to recount this plague for you, I will mention only one, which we have in the Book of Revelation, the fourth seal. We will see in the sixth chapter, verse 8, it is quite far down, when this seal is opened, the following happens, famine fell, listen, and authority was given over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with death and by the beasts of the earth. Listen, authority was given, it says, that a fourth of the earth be put to death, at the time the Book of Revelation was written,

and the weapons of war were the sling and the bow, my beloved, and the javelin, and it was inconceivable that a fourth of the earth could ever be put to death. Today, with the weapons we possess, not the fourth but the entire population of the earth, of the earth and of the five continents, could be wiped off the face of the earth.

I say this because at the time the book was written one would have said it was excessive, improbable, a fourth of the earth, yes, a fourth of the earth, and that is little, it is little, it is little; from five billion we have reached, well, we have not yet reached, we are still at around four and a half billion, somewhere there, for one billion human beings to die, from what, from the sword, that is, from situations of war, from famine, that is, from hunger, and from the beasts of the earth. When we reach that passage I will tell you what the beasts of the earth are. But just now, just now, in passing I say to you, the beasts of the earth are not only lions. The beasts, my beloved, include the microbe. Because it cannot be seen, the beast called the microbe is far more terrible than the beast called the lion.

But whatever the case, the point is that people will die from hunger. And what is this? It is a plague, one of the seven plagues that will be sent. But, if you wish, another example: one of the miracles of our Lord is the feeding of the five thousand in the wilderness. Does not the Evangelist write there that they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained?

And this shows that there is an abundance here. What did the Lord say? I do not want them to grow faint along the road from hunger. Give them something to eat, the Scripture says. In other words, taking up this very evil, He comes to lift it away from His brothers who are suffering under it.

Yes, when you see the other person and he is poor, you are obliged to help him. The other person ought not to be poor; at the very least he should not be hungry and should not be cold. But there is also the other treatment of the subject of poverty within the Gospel.

Whereas previously I told you that poverty is regarded as something evil, now in the other treatment, the second treatment, it is regarded as something good. And not merely good, but a good to be actively pursued. After all, the very first link in the chain of the Beatitudes is the beatitude of the poor.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Happy are those who are poor by their own will, for to them belongs the Kingdom of God. This is not about the humble, my beloved. We can interpret it as referring to the humble as well, but that is not what it means here.

And I will prove this to you at once. You might object that there are opinions of Fathers who have given homilies on the first Beatitude on the basis of humility. I accept that. But I could also cite Fathers to you who have produced works and homilies on the basis of poverty as such, and not as humility.

It does not matter if someone wants to take it figuratively. But I will show you that this is not about humility, but about poverty, and that poverty is genuinely being called blessed. It is clear from the syntax of the sentence: blessed are the poor by their own free choice, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

The poor in spirit, that is, the poor by means of their own spirit, in other words, by means of their own free choice. This phrase 'in spirit' is a dative of manner, it is a dative of manner, and it concerns the poor and not the humble-minded, the poor who are poor voluntarily, because these are the ones who are called blessed.

This voluntary poverty appears most clearly in what the Lord said to the rich young ruler. Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and come, follow me. That is to say: do not be rich, become poor, give your possessions to the poor.

So we see clearly that this concerns voluntary, freely chosen poverty. But what is striking is that the Gospel according to Luke, when it records the Beatitudes, records them without saying 'the poor in spirit,' simply 'the poor,' and most strikingly, it records them both positively and negatively.

Scripture, the Gospel of Luke, in the sixth chapter, verses twenty through twenty-five. "Blessed are the poor" — it does not say "in spirit," just "blessed are the poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God." That is the positive side. Then the negative: "But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation." Woe to you who are rich. Because "you have received" means you have already taken it; it does not mean "far off." It means you have it in hand, you have taken it. You already have your comfort: your warmth, your food, your fine clothes, your car, your good house. You have received your consolation. Remember also the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. "You," it says, "received your good things" — the poor man did not. Now note something else: the poor man was involuntarily poor. But even this was so that the parable could be built, so that the rich man would be given the chance to give alms; because if we suppose that he had been poor by choice, he would have said, "I do not want you to give me anything, rich man; I too was rich, and I left my riches behind."

Yet the poverty of the poor man takes on spiritual dimensions, because he does not grumble, he does not complain. But this phrase 'those who hunger' that the text mentions here, excuse me, it also says: woe to you who are filled, you who are well-fed, for you shall hunger. As you understand, my beloved, filled not with righteousness; for what does Matthew say? Blessed are those who hunger for righteousness. So what would we be saying here: woe to you who are filled with what, with righteousness? But how could that be?

So this concerns what He is saying: blessed is the one who is voluntarily poor; wretched and woe to the one who is rich and gives no thought at all to the fact that poverty exists. Thus we see, for example, the Apostles moving through the world as poor men.

The Apostle tells us in his Second Letter to the Corinthians, chapter 6, verse 10: as poor, we the Apostles, yet making many rich, spiritually of course; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things; as having nothing, but possessing all things. Why? Because we hold you fast; and if we have you, our purse too is held in Another. We are looked upon, and we move through the world, as poor. But here again we must stress two basic elements that come out of all this. The first is, and I underline it, the voluntary character of this poverty, that it is willed. To be able not to be poor, and yet to want to be poor. Take note: not out of foolish stubbornness.

Not for the sake of drinking bouts and taverns, that is dissipation, but for the sake of the Gospel, to remain poor for the Kingdom of God. The second element is poverty in Christ, please take note, poverty in Christ, poverty for the sake of Christ, for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Voluntary poverty, pardon me, involuntary, unwilling poverty is something evil, and indeed an unbearable burden. Voluntary poverty, but not in Christ, is a poverty without meaning or purpose.

If you like, it can even be a whim, or it may come from a philosophical disposition. Voluntary poverty in Christ is the one that has depth and true meaning, with eternal dimensions. I underlined this and I repeat it. Voluntary poverty in Christ. Because I can have it voluntary and yet not in Christ. It must be voluntary, willing, and poverty in Christ.

This voluntary poverty in Christ, my beloved, on which I want to dwell, has a theological dimension. And this theological dimension exists for the following reasons. Notice what I said: voluntary poverty in Christ has a theological dimension, because it frees the wings of the soul from the material burden of wealth, so that the soul can take spiritual flight.

The Fathers stressed this, and stressed it again and again: by the outpouring of blood, the outpouring of the Spirit is brought about. You give blood, you receive the Spirit. You give blood, you receive the Spirit. That is to say, you take in money, you grow rich, and you empty yourself in just that same measure.

The richer you become, the more your spiritual life is stripped away. And for the spiritual person, according to the word of the Lord, it is impossible, incompatible, as impossible as for a thick rope, a "kamilos" as it's called, or if you prefer the animal, a camel, to pass through the eye of a needle. Now, of course, you'll say to me, well, except for that one case about which the Lord said, the things that are impossible for men are possible with God. There are rich people who will enter the Kingdom of God, just as Abraham entered it, but that is the exception.

They are few, and it is a very dangerous thing. Only the one who has truly understood things as the Gospel reveals them, only he, even if he is rich, can be saved. Second, voluntary spiritual poverty, that is, poverty in Christ, is used in the spiritual life as a wonderful, excellent tool, and an irreplaceable one as well.

The Apostle Paul gives us a wonderful image. He says, 'For I have learned to be content.' He says this to the Philippians. An immortal page, my beloved, written by the immortal Paul. I have learned, he says. He was in prison, in Rome, in prison, and he could not work to earn his bread, for he used to work and earn his own bread, and the Philippians sent them money. And he writes to them: what is this you sent me? You are good children, you did well to send it, because it shows the fruit of your spiritual life; but what is this you sent me, for I have learned to be content with what I have. Self-sufficiency, the great capital of a human being, this contentment.

I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. I have learned the lesson well, both to go without and to have. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret; in each thing and in every way I have been initiated, both to be filled and to go hungry. Yes, I learned both to be full and to be hungry. Meaning what? That when I am full I do not become a beast, and when I am hungry I do not blaspheme God. Both to abound and to be in want. I have learned the lesson, both to have things in abundance without clinging to them, so as to be rich, and also to be in want without saying, 'What will become of me?', as though God had died.

I have all things, and abound. You saw the word I have here as well; it means I have everything in abundance. That is how he writes to the Philippians: I have all things and abound. I have everything, and not only do I have everything, but I even have a surplus. Saint Paul, you are in prison, three years in prison, three years in prison, two years in Caesarea and one year in Rome; what do you have, and what do you have in abundance? I have all things and abound. Paul does not lie, you see then, please.

See how a person is forged, how he is tempered! Go ahead, raise your little children on chocolates, and then see, when a famine strikes, what will become of the children. What will become of the children! Raise your children in luxury, with fresh butter and fresh milk, and then see. Teach them to fast; let them learn hardship, even by this artificial means, so that they can endure in the difficult days of their lives. So that they may be able to say, with the Apostle Paul, 'I know how to abound, and I know how to be in want.'

Third, poverty in Christ. At every moment, within this poverty, faith is created in dependence on God, in the providence of God. In this way, self confidence and self insurance are put to death. That attitude of, I have plenty, meaning, let me be all right, my pantry and my wallet.

This self-confidence is idolatry, and so is this self-assurance. Notice what I mean: of course, when we say self-assurance we do not mean insurance or the various insurance funds; those have nothing to do with this, nothing at all. Those address the first kind of poverty: that there should be no poor, that there should be no destitute. What we mean is that clinging to these things, that attitude of, 'I have everything, I have my security, I have my deposits, I have my investments.'

Here, my beloved, is something tremendous: this self-assurance versus our dependence on God. The person who is poor, voluntarily, or even in a way by necessity, now hangs his whole self on God. Who else? That is why, when he finds himself in a difficult moment, he says, 'God has not died.' The other one, with his self-assurance, says, 'Even if God died, what do I care?' Because he relies on himself.

Fourth, the hope of the faithful is placed on the heavenly wealth. My hope is not in earthly goods; it is in heaven. When I remain poor, all I am doing is transferring my wealth to heaven, while the rich man who wants to stay rich never makes that transfer.

Remember the other words of the Lord, so that you may see in the Spirit that this is truly Gospel. 'Do not store up treasures upon the earth.' He does not mean you should not have a small savings; we will see that a little further on, as the Apostle Paul puts it. Rather, do not lay up treasures, do not place your hope where moth and rust destroy. Instead, let your treasure, He says, be in the heavens, where there are no thieves and no robbers, no rust and no moth, nothing of the kind.

The treasure there even earns interest; the bank of heaven yields interest as well. The interest, if you would know, is what the Lord meant in that beautiful comparison, where He says, lend through the mammon of unrighteousness, He says, make friends through the mammon of unrighteousness, so that when you depart, when you leave this present life, they may receive you. In other words, I will take both the capital and the interest with me there. That is what He means.

I have wealth there. The Apostle Paul says, in his letter to the Hebrews, when he addresses those who had lost their possessions because their persecutors had seized them: 'the seizure of your possessions,' he says in chapter 10, a magnificent chapter. Read it, I beg you, the tenth chapter. To the Hebrews: 'the seizure of your possessions you received with joy.'

When they took your possessions from you, you accepted it with great joy. Strange; no one rejoices at having his belongings seized. 'Knowing,' here is the secret, 'that you yourselves have a better and abiding possession in heaven.' Possessions means property. Because you know that you have for yourselves a better property, one that abides in heaven, and so you were not grieved. So you see how voluntary poverty in Christ, when such a situation comes, shows where a man stands. His hope is not in this; it is in God. It makes the faithful flexible and ready for Christian confession, for tribulation, and for martyrdom. He does not weigh his property, my beloved, the man who has before him the faith for Christ.

All for all, all for all. But when someone owns property, when his mind is on his possessions, where is the room to confess Christ? We see this every single day. To keep our own interests from being harmed, what do we do? We keep quiet, we say nothing, just so we won't suffer any loss. But when you have nothing to lose, what is there to hold you back? You're even ready to endure martyrdom. You'll be like a little bird, truly, you'll take wing, and in everything you'll feel an unimaginable lightness, once you have no possessions. And sixth, poverty, take note of this, is a refusal of the created order, of an aged world, for nothing of its present form will remain when we enter into the new world of the Kingdom of God. Nothing. Not our house, not our fields, not our money, absolutely nothing.

Listen to what the Apostle says, First Corinthians 7:30-31: 'But this I say, brethren,' this is what I am telling you, 'the time is short.' 'Those who buy, as though they possessed not' — you may buy, only do not say 'these things are mine' — 'and those who use this world, as not abusing it.' So those who make use of this world should not misuse it, but only use it. You will use the tape recorder, and the watch, and the bus, and the electricity. But take care: do not cling to these things. Simply make use of them, nothing more. For 'the fashion of this world passeth away' — the form of this world is passing. And since it is passing, what am I to gain? First of all, there is death; death is there. But even if death did not exist, what would I gain? A world grown old, a world that will change, that will become new, that will have a new form,

perfect dimensions, which will be the Kingdom of God; everything else will be set aside. So what am I to acquire? This is why the man who has voluntary poverty in Christ is theological, because he takes all of this into account. And finally, and I want you to pay attention to this last point as much as to the first: voluntary poverty in Christ makes the believer like the One who voluntarily became poor, God Himself.

God becomes poor, God becomes poor, because through sin human beings became poor, and by imitating the God who became poor through His Incarnation, the human person is made rich. His coming among us. Listen to how the Apostle Paul says this in Second Corinthians 8:9: 'For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.' This is how a person becomes an imitator of Christ.

We see this truly across the whole breadth of the Gospel. All the Saints, my dear ones, lived this way. Take a look at the lives of all the Saints, and you will see this. What are the Saints? They are the illustrated edition of the Gospel.

This is what the Saints are. You don't understand the Gospel? Read the life of a Saint. Look at the life of a Saint. And there, just as long ago, when people did not know their letters and so they painted the Salutations, they made them on the walls, on the icons, so that even the unlettered might learn the doctrinal teaching of our Church, in just this way the illustrated teaching of the Gospel, in the Orthodox sense, is the life of the Saints.

In any case, a marvellous exposition on poverty, on both positions, as something evil that must be healed, and as something good that must be sought after, that is, the theology of poverty, of poverty in Christ, you will find, if you wish, at home, in the Second Epistle to the Corinthians, the whole chapters, chapter 8 and chapter 9. Read them.

But our age, my dear ones, is an age of atheism and of a secularizing spirit, a spirit that belongs to this present world. Today, tomorrow, the Kingdom of God, no one gives it a thought. Today, today you have food to eat, you have your chance to grow rich, that is what people find exciting, so long as you don't fail to grab the opportunities to become wealthy.

But for this very reason, the Christians of our age, precisely because they live with this spirit, do not understand the value of voluntary poverty in Christ. Perhaps they understand it, or want to understand it, only with regard to the clergy.

You see, the world would want the cleric to be poor, not to acquire property. The moment the priest gets a mobile phone, the moment he gets an apartment, an apartment building, oh look, he is moving up. They want the priest poor, and when they see him poor they honour him. You see the criterion, do you see it? But as for the fullness of the Church, the body of the faithful, they think it does not have to follow poverty in Christ. That is the issue. The priest yes, all those. But there is no Gospel for priests and a Gospel for laypeople; there is one Gospel for all. It is not, I tell you, my dear ones, an exaggeration. If we say this, this very thing is the reason we do not understand poverty in Christ, voluntary poverty, the reason we do not understand non-possession today.

It is no exaggeration, I emphasise this to you. If you ask why people today do not understand non-possession, it is because they do not understand this point. And since they do not understand this point, then neither do they understand the Mystery of the Incarnation; it remains strange to them.

Nor the mystery of the Cross either. All these remain not merely mysteries, but sealed mysteries. And because they do not grasp either the mystery of God's Incarnation or the mystery of the Cross, they go so far as to deny both Christ and the Cross.

That is why we have denial. These are understandable things. But they are also eternal things. Do not say to me, 'Father, forgive me, but be a little more up to date.' The Gospel is up to date. We cannot say that these are old things. That is why we suffer.

When there's an illness, what do we say? We have to be healed. We look for the cause. Can you say of the thing that is medicine that it's outdated? You have the flu, and you apply cupping. You apply cupping; your treatment with cupping when you've caught a cold. Can you say, no matter how great the medicines we discover, that cupping has become obsolete? Can you say that? Let the treatments help, the cupping, the classic remedies. Cupping. And the Gospel, since it heals, does not grow old. Because whatever heals does not grow old. And so, beloved, the measure of poverty according to Christ is what the Apostle says, so that we may not be led astray: "But godliness with contentment is great gain." There is great wealth in combining godliness with contentment.

with self-sufficiency. I have these things, glory to God, and they are enough. Having food and covering, with these let us be content. First Timothy 6:6-8. This applies to all Christians, let us know this. But this point is the minimum of the offering. One is obliged to begin from this.

This very poverty, the one accompanied by tribulations and works, was the wealth and the praise of the bishop of Smyrna, despite all the wealth of that city. The city had very sweet wealth, but its bishop was found to be voluntarily poor in Christ. This was his wealth, just as it will also be our wealth, my beloved.

Ο ενανθρωπήσας Υιός του Θεού, δηλαδή η ανθρωπίνη φύση του Κυρίου, είναι εκείνη η οποία ηγωνίσθη και οδήγησε το ανθρώπινο γένος. Πάλι εις την Βασιλεία του Θεού. Εις τι όμως πρέπει να αγωνιστεί ο κάθε ένας προκειμένου να νικήσει;

Αν εγώ δεν αμάρτανα εις τον παράδεισο, η κτίσις δεν θα υπέφερε αυτήν την ώρα. Αν λοιπόν υπάρχει αυτή η κατάσταση μέσα εις την κτίση, είναι γιατί εγώ ο άνθρωπος φταίω. Πέστε μου, αυτά όλα δεν είναι έργα; Δεν είναι φιλάνθρωπες εκδηλώσεις, φιλάνθρωπες διαθέσεις;

Και αν κανείς ακόμη, αν το θέλετε, ανοίξει το παράθυρο και βάλει ψιχουλάκια στο παράθυρο και περιμένει να έρθουν τα πουλάκια, τα σπουργιτάκια, γιατί μόνο τα σπουργίτια, κυρίως τα σπουργίτια έχουμε τώρα τον χειμώνα και άλλα πουλάκια, αλλά κυρίως αυτά τα επικρατέστερα εδώ γύρω στα σπίτια μας, να έρθουν και να φάνε ψιχουλάκια, δεν είναι αυτά φιλανθρωπία εσύ; Δεν είναι;

Γράφει ὁ Ἅγιος Ἰάκωβος, ὁ ἀδελφόθεος, στὸ δεύτερο κεφάλαιό του: Ἐὰν δὲ ἀδελφὸς ἢ ἀδελφὴ γυμνοὶ ὑπάρχωσι καὶ λειπόμενοι ὦσι τῆς ἐφημέρου τροφῆς. Κάποιος ἀδελφός, κάποια ἀδελφή, γυναίκα δηλαδή, κρυώνουν, δὲν ἔχουν ροῦχο νὰ ντυθοῦν καὶ ἀκόμη δὲν ἔχουν φαγητό, τῆς ἐφημέρου τροφῆς, τῆς καθημερινῆς τροφῆς, δηλαδὴ πραγματικὰ καθημερινῆς τροφῆς, ὄχι ἀποθήκη· καὶ πεῖ κάποιος ἀπὸ ἐσᾶς εἰς αὐτούς, ὑπάγετε ἐν εἰρήνῃ, θερμαίνεσθε καὶ χορτάζεσθε, μὴ δῶτε δὲ αὐτοῖς τὰ ἐπιτήδεια τοῦ σώματος, καὶ τὸ ὄφελος;

Αλλά τι είναι όμως, το θέμα είναι ότι θα πεθάνουν άνθρωποι από την πείνα. Και τι είναι αυτό; Είναι μία πληγή, μία από τις επτά πληγές που θα δοθούν. Αλλά κι αν θέλετε ακόμη, ένα από τα θαύματα του Κυρίου μας είναι ο εμπλησμός των πεντακισχιλίων εις την έρημον. Δεν γράφει εκεί ο Ευαγγελιστής ότι ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν, καὶ ἦραν τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων δώδεκα κοφίνους πλήρεις;
