The subject we will take up this evening, with God's help, has to do with faith, with humility, and with prayer.
It is an account that contains these three basic themes within it.
It is essential that a person know to whom he is turning. If he does not believe that God is almighty, can he ever turn to Him? No. He must believe rightly in the One he is addressing. Second, for his prayer to bear good fruit, for it to receive an answer, as we say, a humble mind is an essential element, because God does not listen to the egotist, just as He does not listen to the unbeliever.
If a person's request is to be accepted and his prayer, his petition, is to receive an answer, he must without fail be filled with a humble mind. A humble mind means believing that he is not worthy of what he is asking for, and believing further that he does not deserve to stand before God — and yet God receives him, sinner though he is, so long as he humbles himself and admits that, being human, he has sinned.
It is an account concerning a woman, a mother in pain, with a demon-possessed child. Two Evangelists record this incident: Matthew in his fifteenth chapter, verse twenty-one and following, and Mark in his seventh chapter, verse twenty-one and following.
And the verses that follow. In this account you are about to hear, there are three essential elements: right faith in the person of Jesus, the mother’s humble spirit, and persistence in prayer. These brought the blessed result that she received from our Christ something no human being and no science could give. We too often find ourselves in similar circumstances, but we lose heart. We offer a prayer, receive no answer, and stop. “God does not listen to me. I am a sinner; someone else must pray.” But that is not so. God listens to everyone. If you are a sinner, you can set your life in order: repent, go to confession, and then you will be able to stand before God with a measure of dignity. To say, “I am a sinner,” while doing nothing to deal with your sinful state is itself egotistical. It is as though you were saying, “I am a sinner, and I will remain a sinner.” That is not right, since the Lord gives every person the opportunity to put things right. Listen, then, for these three things in this woman’s encounter with Jesus. “And going out from there,” the Gospel says of our Christ, “He withdrew.”
He withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. These were pagan places, given over to idols. "And behold, a Canaanite woman came out from those borders and cried out to Him, saying: 'Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly tormented by a demon.'" When our Christ passed over to the borders of Tyre and Sidon, this woman came out all the way to that place.
Clearly she knew about Jesus from what people were saying. She had not set out to travel to Jerusalem, say, to meet Him there. But this moment, when He was present right in front of her, this she seized. This woman has no connection with the Bible, no connection with the true God, the way the Hebrews did.
She is an idolater, a foreigner, just as we Greeks were; in fact she was a Greek woman, as Mark tells us. And yet she knows that Christ is the Messiah and that He comes from the family of David, from David's household.
That is to say, humanly speaking, our Most Holy Theotokos, who lent her flesh to our Christ, came from that line.
Our Christ was of the royal line of David, and so was Joseph. And we remember this from the time he went up to Bethlehem for the census, because he was of the house and lineage of David. Notice the word: he was crying out — that is, not simply calling out, not simply asking, but insistently, almost forcing the issue. Crying out: «Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David.» So the Lord's biblical name was known — the biblical name.
Of the Lord — the biblical name.
Just think, I say: he had no connection whatsoever with that religion, and yet he knew. But today, here we are in the twentieth century, and if you ask a man or woman something about Christ, even though they may be religious, lighting candles and burning incense and so forth, they do not know how to answer.
That is why all the heretics come along presenting themselves as professors: the Protestants, the Jehovah's Witnesses, and the rest.
And so on—all of them trying to set themselves up as our teachers, because the one thing we neither read nor study systematically is Holy Scripture, whether the text itself or its interpretation. So many other things occupy our attention: newspapers, magazines, television, radio, all kinds of things and spectacles. But this book remains unread. It is true that the Scriptures are now found in most homes, but they are not studied; they are not studied. And so we do not have a correct understanding of matters of faith.
This woman, though she is not an Israelite, nevertheless held the right opinion, that the Messiah would be a descendant of David, and she asks for mercy for her daughter. "My daughter," she says, "is grievously vexed by a demon." Evidently she did not bring the girl with her, because our Lord, as it seems, was not staying in that place but only passing through; so she went and fell down before Christ on the child's behalf, and asks for mercy on her own behalf.
"Have mercy on me" — not "have mercy on my child."
In other words, she admits that if the child is suffering, and she herself is being tormented along with it, the fault is hers.
We, if we find ourselves in such a case, will throw the blame on the other person; we do not take it on ourselves. And if something happens to us — a child turns out badly, something unpleasant comes up, an illness strikes, whatever it may be — we throw it onto the other person, when we ought to lay it on ourselves.
We are the ones responsible. If I were a better person, my child would have turned out better. If I were a better person, I would not have these temptations. I would not have suffered these shipwrecks in my life, and so on. This is a necessary lesson for every one of us.
You lose nothing by taking it upon yourself.
A prayer.
She asks for mercy on her own behalf. Clearly, in her humility, she acknowledges that she herself is the cause. A man leaves a woman and goes off with another woman. A woman leaves a man and goes off with another man. Do not blame her, and do not blame him. Blame yourself. If only I had been a better man; if only I had been a better woman.
If I had been a better person, this would never have happened. Yes, my God, I am the one at fault; it is not his fault, it is not her fault. But that is not what happens with us. That humility is not there; we do not admit it. "He is to blame, she is to blame, those things are to blame" — but it is not like that.
You will have better results and be more at peace if you admit that you yourself are the cause, and that this suffering, this temptation, this cross, this stumbling block has come upon you. That is what is being taught here.
Let us not shift the responsibility onto someone else; let us take the responsibility on ourselves. Let us not remain children of Adam, who both shifted the responsibility. It was as if they were saying that God is to blame: since Adam is not to blame and Eve is not to blame, then God is to blame.
Because this is exactly what we do as well, with whoever it is we end up pouring out our complaint to. We will accuse him, or her, or the children, when what we ought to do is accuse ourselves.
ourselves. And there are cases where the causes are not apparent: they may be forms of selfishness, passions, or old debts that we owe and are repaying through such a situation. Many factors may be involved. You have nothing to gain by blaming the other person, but you have much to gain by blaming yourself. And so this woman says, “Have mercy on me; it is I whom You should have mercy on.” In this way, she teaches us how to pray.
The question is how a person should come before God with his needs, so that God will regard him accordingly. The people who come before Him with a broken and humbled heart, God does not despise.
He receives them. God is not offended by our sins. Nor does God count up a person's sins. He looks at what disposition the one who presents himself before Him has, how he comes before Him: broken, admitting that as a human being he sins. That is what God looks at.
He sees him repentant, He sees him acknowledging his faults and taking them upon himself and saying, I did these things, he did not do them. For example, the Lord sees that I go to confession, and that I do not go to confess my husband's sins.
Because many women go and confess their husband's sins. And a certain priest once did a fine thing: as he was reading the prayer of absolution, he said, Lord, forgive the sins of your servant George, and so on.
My name is not George, she says, Father; my name is Georgia. But you came and confessed your husband's faults to me, he says; you told me nothing of your own. So how am I to forgive you? It is him I will be forgiving.
These things do not work with God. Say whatever you like, accuse the whole world, have the right on your side. But God does not want that. You speak about yourself; you do not accuse anyone. What happened, God knows, and He knows why it happened.
You do, however, have great boldness before God if you say: for this to have happened to me, Father, I am certainly the one at fault. My Lord, I am at fault. For the child to be like this, for my girl to be like this, for my husband to be like this, for my wife to be like this, my neighbour and so on — for me to find myself in this environment.
I am paying for my own sins. Forgive me, arrange things by Your providence, You find a way. Then you have God as your ally — not just some politician, not some powerful man with the right connections, not some clever person of this world. You have God Himself as your ally. God is conquered by the humble mindset of a human being.
And in the same way God turns fierce, God rises up like a wild beast, when He sees a man full of ego who believes he is being treated unjustly. For even if a person is openly wronged, he is blessed. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake.
“I have included you in My plan,” He says. “I have established a special law and declared you blessed beforehand. Yet you do not want this; instead, you come and complain to Me. You do not want to suffer injustice; you do not want to be slandered.”
You do not want to be insulted; you do not want to be treated unjustly. You do not want to be robbed. Who are you? How dare you? I have established a law for your benefit: if these things happen to you, I will call you blessed for all eternity. How can you turn it back on Me?
Am I mistaken? Do you know how many twists and turns these things involve? We have not even reached the threshold of Christianity. For we hear things—words spoken by Christians—that do not have even the faintest fragrance of the Gospel.
So this woman, I'm telling you, has no connection whatsoever with the Scriptures. She isn't an Israelite; she's a stranger to the whole matter. She prays to other gods, she worships other gods. And yet, perhaps because of what she had heard about the person of Jesus and so on, she rushed to speak to Him, to plead with Him, to humble herself before Him, to abase herself before Him, with one purpose and one purpose only: to receive.
For her to do all this means she believed that this man was no ordinary man, that He was the one who held the solution to the whole matter in His hands.
However great a man may be, and however much he may often want to help us, he does not have the power; God always has the power. In the most difficult matters, in all of them, small and great, whatever it may be. It is enough that you entrust them to Him with trust, and entirely.
The matter will have the best possible outcome, both for this present age and for the age to come. In any case, she says, my daughter is grievously vexed with a demon. But He answered her not a word, as though nothing had happened at all.
Although she kept calling out—she cried aloud, she shouted—He heard her, but He did not answer. Many people think that when they pray, God may perhaps be off at the coffeehouse. The Prophet Elijah said this; it is not my own saying. “Cry aloud,” he says. “Who knows what He may be doing? After all, He is a god,” he says.
Maybe He's resting somewhere, maybe He's off somewhere else. Maybe He's gone out for a walk, who knows. That happens with people, but not with God. Before you open your mouth, God already knows what you are going to say.
What are you going to say? Have you ever read in Exodus how the Hebrews found themselves in a desperate situation, with no water for three days—three million people?
Thank you.
Moses was about to say something, and God said to him, “Why do you cry out to Me? Why are you calling out?” He had not even opened his mouth or said anything, yet God called to him and said, “Why do you cry out to Me? Why are you calling out? Why are you troubling Me?” Moses had merely thought within himself of saying something, but God answered him before he could speak. Just think: we do not even have to utter it.
That we have to go somewhere, stand a certain way, head down, eyes closed, and so on. Nothing of the kind — I don't see any of that. He knows these things beforehand. And He has each person's answer ready at the right moment.
It was as though she had not been heard, as though nothing had registered, as though she had said nothing at all, or as though Christ were not even there. Christ kept on His way. This can happen to us too. Or perhaps it has already happened to us.
We plead, and no answer comes. You see no light dawning anywhere on your situation. If anything, it grows darker. A person has to keep on insisting, and to do it with humility. Be sure of this — our Christ has told us: knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
Many times we knock at the door of our Christ and He does not open. Do not believe, as I said a moment ago, that He is not inside.
A person may not be home. Perhaps they left the light on and forgot about it. And you see the light and say, he's inside. And the man isn't inside at all. And you misjudge him, and you get angry.
But Christ is always inside. And He always hears. What He does not always do is answer at the hour we want.
God's clock, more often than not, runs slow. We want the miracle right this second. There are certain cases where it can happen that way, where you say, "My Panagia, help me!" And indeed our Panagia, our Lord, the saint — "My angel, help me!" — gets there in time and heads off a situation: someone falling from a height, someone about to crash, someone caught in a current, I don't know what; something intervenes in an instant. But there are also short-term matters and long-term ones, mind you.
In the same way things went for the couple Zacharias and Elizabeth. They prayed for many years for a child, and the answer came fifty years later, when they had reached an age where — not a child; it was simply not possible for a woman of ninety to conceive and hold a child in her arms. It was not possible. But that was when God willed it, and not to punish them but to reward them. Because if He had answered back when they wanted a child, when they were young, when the lady still had her monthly cycle and he was a man in his prime and so on, fit for having children, He would have given them a child. But now He gave them the child. He gave them the greatest man ever born of woman, as our Christ Himself said.
"Among those born of women, there is none greater than John the Forerunner." For Christ was going to come only fifty years later. So God was holding a great reward in store for these two. Because they were righteous, as the Evangelist tells us. And He gives them the greatest man who ever lived, the honorable Forerunner. Well, the same thing happens here too. In this case, as you will see in what follows.
You will see next that this woman, even though she got no answer, did not stop. She kept on pleading, and she persisted. In fact she received an answer that was a refusal — you will see it a little further on — and a humiliating answer as well, one that struck at her ego, one that put her whole person in question; and even so, she prevailed over Christ. In the end she got His signature on a blank page, signed in blank. Next to her, we simply do not exist.
In the whole record of such incidents, this is the one and only case where a person forced God's hand and got His signature on a blank page. Would you sign a blank sheet of paper? You would not. Would you sign a blank promissory note, a blank bill of exchange, with nothing filled in? You would not sign it. And yet Christ signed. Go, He says: be it unto thee as thou wilt. Take the rest, go — whatever you want, let it happen: let her be well, let her marry, let her make money, let her do whatever she wants. Go. The one and only case. God has not changed; we have changed, and our way has changed. So many times God may not answer, may give no answer at all,
and He has His own reason for not answering. And this is just what became the occasion for the Apostles to be scandalized, to stumble: they had this woman on their hands who kept crying out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" She must have been weeping as well, I don't know what else. She saw this as her one and only chance, now that He was passing by; if nothing happened now, it would never happen, and so on. And all of that wore the Apostles out, having to listen to her. Just as Paul was worn out by that demon in Kavala, the one that kept coming up close to him and speaking in Paul's favor. But Paul gave the order for it to get out of there; he wanted no praise and no congratulations from the devil. And so, the Gospel says, our Lord, even though she kept crying out, "answered her not a word."
Then the disciples, who were worn out, came and besought him, saying — they were pleading with Him.
They pleaded with Him, they asked Him, they begged Him: “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” She keeps shouting; she does not come right up to us, they say, but she will not leave us in peace. “Send her away.” “But am I holding her bound?” “Yes, indeed, You are. She is bound by Your word, waiting for a yes or a no so that she can decide what to do. As long as You do not answer, You keep her in suspense, and she keeps drawing near.” That is what I want: for her to draw near.
And we beg him to lift that bed out of the house, to lift little George up off it. Why? Because Saint George's day is the day after tomorrow, his name day — are we going to have a sickbed sitting there in the middle of the house? You're going to have the dancing in the house on Saint George's day; is the bed going to stay right there?
They don't clear the bed away. Do you understand? And our Lord sees things very differently, and He acts very differently from the way we do. Let us not act on the basis of our flesh, our world, our love of ease, this and that. That we came here to live, not to be tormented; that we came to enjoy ourselves, we didn't come here to have things like this. So the Apostles intervened: tell her yes or no, so she'll go away, she's disturbing us. When the Apostles spoke to the Lord, the Lord answers and says: I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. At least she heard two words from His mouth — how He is thinking about her case, about her person.
The woman heard this. When did Christ speak? When the Apostles came forward. What do you see here? Intercession—the very thing the heretics reject. “Everything should be addressed directly to God,” they say. “What do you need the Most Holy Theotokos for?”
“Why are you talking to me about saints? What is all this about intercessions and the rest of it?” Well, didn’t she go straight to Christ herself? And Christ did not answer her. And when did He answer? When the Apostles stepped in on her behalf. There it is — intercession, right there in Scripture. I say this for the sake of the people who listen to them, and especially for the ones who come to us handing out their bits of wisdom.
These aren't clever sayings. Here is the real wisdom: the Apostles stepped in and interceded with Christ. And Christ gave an answer. It wasn't, in any case, an answer in her favour. But He did give her an answer, He did reply. For a moment He untangled a thought for her, He handed her a thread to follow so she could see how Christ thinks, and from that point on it's up to her what she does with it. So intercessions are there in the Gospel.
When she heard that Christ had not come for them but only for the lost sheep of the house of Israel — the Israelites, the Hebrews, the descendants of Jacob, because Israel was the name given to Jacob, who was renamed —
They say, "Send her away." And what did she do? "Then she came and worshipped Him, saying..." She went and fell down in front of His feet. She didn't grab Him from behind to pull Him down; she went and fell in front of Him. As He was passing by, and right in the middle of this discussion, she falls at His feet. She stops Him. She blocks God's way.
Pay attention to these scenes. You'll say to me, why do you set it out like that? Because that is exactly what you must do. Certain, absolutely certain, that Christ is overcome. They don't leave. "I'm not getting up from here." Many people do get up, and off they go to Tinos to get their miracle.
Why? Isn't it the same Theotokos who stands in the icon corner of our own house? If we don't have that faith which comes alive in us once we arrive at Tinos — if we had that power of faith, we wouldn't get up from where we are for one day, two, three, five days.
"I'm not getting up from here. You are going to grant my request right here. I believe in You." We would receive our request right here. But our faith doesn't grow that much unless we decide on a sea voyage, when we've never been to sea in our lives.
So that we spend the money we have, throw the money away, and humble ourselves to the point of embarrassment. And if we go all the way there, having vowed to go on all fours from the quay up to the monastery, and so on — then faith increases, the vessel of faith grows bigger, and it can hold the miracle.
Because the vessel of faith has to have the right size and the right purity, so that the miracle can be put into it, in proportion to the miracle, to its size and its kind. You have to make a vessel that matches, so that the grace of God, or the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos, or of the Saints, may place the miracle in it.
So she went forward and fell before Him, saying, "Lord, help me." She found no other words at that moment — only "help me." You know how it is: when you see someone breaking down in front of you and the signs of their need are plain on them, your heart cracks sometimes, if you can't help. But this One is God, and He can help in all kinds of ways.
"Lord, help me" — even though He had said He had said, “I was not sent to these idolaters;, "I have come for the Israelites." A second answer: for the second time the Lord's mouth opens. "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs."
That was fire for her, scalding water. Not only does He not grant her request, He calls her a little dog as well. And she could have said, out of ordinary good manners, as we would put it: "You don't want to help me, Lord. All right."
You have Your reasons; I do not wish to question them. But do not call me a dog as well. Do you understand how far this woman was driven? “It is not good,” He says, “to take the bread”—these miracles, these blessings. “They are for My children, for the children of Israel.”
It is not for you little dogs. And in the New Testament He said something along the same lines. He says there: «Do not give what is holy to the dogs, and do not cast your pearls before swine.» What is holy — to the dogs. By «dogs» He means those who are not baptized.
So there too He looks at them that way. The Israelites were circumcised, they carried the seal of blood, and they were in covenant with God. But these others were still outside, and He calls them little dogs.
The woman was not offended even then, because, you know, if you do not have a corn on your foot, no matter how much someone steps on you, you will not cry out. But if you do have a corn, even if someone steps on you only lightly, you will cry out—and you may even raise your handbag or umbrella to strike the person who stepped on you.
The poor woman — it seems that her pain for her child, and also her confidence that He was able to bring her out of this difficult situation, along with her humble frame of mind, helped her, and she said: "Yes, Lord, I admit it, I am a little dog. But even the little dogs eat of the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."
I am not asking You to seat me at the table and give me bread. Keep it for Your cherished children, the Jews. Just let me remain underneath like a little dog; and if even a morsel of Your buttered bread should fall, I will take that for myself.
"I'm not asking You to give me what You have and intend for them. Give it to them, I won't deprive them of it. But I ask for crumbs." For them You opened eyes, You opened tombs, You cleansed lepers. What did He not do for them?
And they are getting you ready for the cross — that is their way of saying "thank you." "Am I the one asking for that? No. Give that to them. They deserve it. Besides, since this is what you want, I have nothing to say about it. But let me — since I am a kynarion, as you put it, a little dog, down there underneath the table — let me eat from the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." And you know, if you go into those grand houses where the children eat their fill, the dogs underneath end up eating more than the children up at the table. The children throw everything down; they have had enough, so they toss it down.
And you do not even need to take thought for the dog. It is filled from the table sooner than your children are. The image is very vivid—but where did she find such words? For this is not a parable; pay attention. If it were a parable, you might say, “Well, He is God—surely He could find a few words and present the matter beautifully.”
But here these are the words of an idolatrous woman who had, of course, a pain of her own. That is the point. And she found words which, as the text goes on to say, conquered God — the same God who had made it clear and said, "I have not come for you."
"My mission here is a different one." And in fact He had even given a commandment about it — I don't know whether you ever read it.
“Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” He had said this; He had given this command. And now He sets aside the very command He had given the others to keep.
He Himself does not keep it. Why? Because He was conquered by the faith, by the humility of this foreign woman. God is free; today He does as He wills. He does nothing foolish. Whatever is serious, whatever will teach something, that is what He does.
And He pays no attention to what people will say.
It is something. So think how much patient endurance this woman teaches us. How much humility this woman teaches us.
I heard of a family that went over to the Jehovah's Witnesses. Because their daughter fell ill and God did not make her well.
"Look," he says, "I have a God whom I have served all these years" — just like the elder brother of the Prodigal Son: "These many years do I serve thee" — "and He didn't make my girl well. Well then, what do I need this God for?" And off he went to the god Jehovah.
But afterwards our Panagia, the All-Holy Theotokos, took pity on him and worked a miracle for him. And he came back — in dust and ashes, as Job says: that is, humbled, brought low, and contrite of heart. At any rate, I don't know what God saw in him, or how He worked.
He is all-wise and almighty, and He helps. But these words, I say it again, these words that this woman spoke here — no other person has ever spoken them. And our Christ, before such humility and such faith, answered and said: "O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt." And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
She is speaking with Him somewhere at the borders, outside her own village or town, out in that region, with our Christ as He is passing through on His way down. And back at the house the girl is healed. Why was the girl healed? Because her mother pleaded for her.
So then, Mr. Protestant and Mr. Jehovah's Witness, isn't this right there in your own Bible — the very thing you keep telling me doesn't hold? Isn't it one person praying here and another person receiving? "But what faith does the child have?" they say. "What does the child know?"
Exactly what those possessed by demons know — the Canaanite woman's daughter back at the house — that is what the baby knows. Stubborn man, that is what it knows. What did that demon-tormented little girl know, the one Satan was beating at home? Did she know anything? She did not.
But on behalf of the mother who begged Him, Christ served Satan with an eviction notice. And Satan left, and the little girl was made well. So why is it that now, when I, and the father, and the mother, and the godparent who takes on the child and confesses the faith on the child's behalf, and so many others standing here with the little baptismal crosses they pin on us — why do we not have the boldness, the freedom to speak plainly before God, and say: My Christ, cleanse this child, who has no sins of their own, who carries only the ancestral sin, the sin we inherit from our forefathers, for which this child bears no responsibility.
And is it not written there in the records of the Church, and do you not say:
«You have been baptized, you have been chrismated — anointed with the holy chrism — you have been justified.» What does that mean, «you have been justified»? It means I had been condemned unjustly. Why? Adam sinned, and I am the one who goes to hell. And then, he says, Christ comes along and justifies me, sets me right. I don't want to go to hell.
You see, in two words, how the Orthodox Christian breathes, and how he sees that his faith is sound. Who could ever dispute that with me? Why is the child baptised? Is it not baptised for what we call the ancestral sin?
Does the little child not carry it too, since it comes from the same source? If you pour poison into the reservoir at Marathon, will not every tap down here be poisoned? So it is with the human race: it was poisoned at its root, back there, and it comes forth poisoned and dead.
And Christ comes and buries these dead, and raises them up again through the Baptism He gives them. For Baptism is a burial — Baptism is an entombment. Just as our Christ was buried for three days, so man is buried in the water for three days.
Three times he goes down, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. So then: the mother prays, and the child is delivered from the demon. How then can you forbid me and tell me that the child must confess for itself in order to be cleansed?
If it were a grown person, then that grown person would have a say. He would be hearing about Christianity for the first time. Just as today the various missions go out and preach the Gospel — to Black people, white people, yellow people, to cannibals, to tribes in the wild, and so on.
Those people hear this new religion for the first time. And this new religion preaches Baptism.
“Baptism,” the father and mother say. “We will be baptized.” And they take their little ones and have them baptized as well. Do they not have the right to baptize their children? Were not Lydia and her household baptized? Were not the jailer and his household baptized? When Scripture says “the household,” what does that mean? Did they baptize the walls? Did they baptize the house itself? Or did they baptize the people who lived there, young and old alike? When it says “the household of Stephanas,” was not the whole family baptized? Does it tell us there were no little children among them?
Were they little children? No, they were all grown, and each one confessed the faith for himself. Pay close attention at this point. I want to draw your attention here, because we are passing through bad times as far as the faith is concerned, and every day our faith is wounded, since we do not know the antidote for each case; because we are, as I told you at the beginning, people who have not done our reading.
We do not study these matters of the faith; they do not concern us. A farmer occupies himself every single day with the new sprays and the new fertilisers that come out. He asks for instructions. And you may have heard the programmes we have on the radio, where the Ministry keeps a special service that answers questions and sees to the needs, over the air, of farmers, stock-breeders, poultry farmers, everyone.
The Orthodox Christian doesn't do this about the faith. We are the only ones who are indifferent. Everything is being shaken, everything is being lost, and we know nothing about it. The fault is ours. "You are deceived," our Christ said, "because you do not know the Scriptures." And those who are called Evangelicals — the Gospel people — are actually anti-Gospel.
And those who call themselves Bible Students are peddlers of darkness. And we, because we know nothing — we are like the man from Kefalonia who counts the Twelve Gospels and comes out with thirteen —
We just stand there and watch them. So I ask you now, after presenting it to you in this way—and I too received it this way, because this is how it is set forth; I have introduced no innovation of my own. Here it says clearly: “And her daughter was healed from that very hour.”
The daughter never appeared anywhere at all. The daughter was at home, and no one even asked her: 'Do you want to be made well, my child?' No one asked her. So how are You coercing her, Christ? Do you understand this?
He gave the command from far away for the demon to depart, for the girl to be rid of the demon. The child who is being baptised — do we believe that it has a demon in it, or do we not? The unbaptised one — how does grandmother's theology put it, the unbaptised boy?
She calls him a little dragon, doesn't she? And the girl, what does she call her? A little she-dragon. Why? Because he has Satan in his heart. Go and take the prayers of the Church's service of Baptism, read them, and see what is said to that child. Meanwhile we are busy looking at whether the godmother is pretty and what presents I am going to give.
Go and put your ear right up close, back there where the catechism prayers are being said, and listen as the priest reads them, and he exorcises the child, and he signs it with the cross, and he breathes on it. See what is going on there, what this man is doing, who he is speaking with, on whom he is serving the notice of eviction, who it is he is breathing on. The devil — who has legal rights, a real claim on that child.
Because this child is a descendant of fallen Adam. So never say that you will present yourself before Christ on your own. No. Even when you feel you have no right to say, 'My Christ, cover me and protect me' — you do have that right, you have it. But you will have better results if you say it through the person of the Most Holy Theotokos, your Mother.
'If You will, I beg You, cover and protect me too.' Through the intercessions of the Saints, of the Archangels — of Saint Athanasius, of the Saint whose name you bear, of Saint Catherine, of Saint Demetrios, of Anthony the Great.
Have you noticed how many names of Saints the Church carries with her in her prayers?
She comes before Christ for a single prayer, and she brings a whole string of names behind her. She calls upon all of them; she reaches all the way back to the righteous ancestors of God, Joachim and Anna. 'And of all the Saints: Lord Jesus Christ, our God, have mercy on us and save us.'
We have no boldness before God. And even if you do have boldness, admit that you have none; then you have greater boldness before God. Never let yourself believe that you can stroll in there in your fine little suit.
Even if you make it all the way to the table of the Mystical Supper, the tongs will come and seize you from there, and He will say to you, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” Then you will be silenced; your mouth will be shut. And He will give the command: “Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the place of weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
The Theotokos is a great person; our Saints are great persons — and even so, we do not make use of them. And as a result, since we do not make use of them, we do not receive, because they are persons, they have real standing and presence before God.
And I take this opportunity to tell you: let us not limit ourselves only to the Saints of the day, for example. Of course, as an honor granted to them, on the day their feast is celebrated, they too will ask our Christ for some gift, and He will give it.
For example, today we had Saint Ignatius the God-bearer. So we stand, we make our prayer, and we say: Through the intercessions, Lord, of Your Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, whose translation of relics we are celebrating.
We give thanks — and of all the Saints. Help in this situation; give a thought to this case as well; take this case too into Your hands; take our Church into Your hands, take the world into Your hands, our language, our homeland, the family, the young people, husbands and wives — take them into Your hands.
Besides these, many people stop at the wonderworking Saints. 'My Saint Irene Chrysovalantou, great is her grace.' 'My Saint Paraskevi, for the eyes, great is her grace.' 'My Saint Nektarios the Wonderworker, great is his grace.'
But are Joachim and Anna nothing? Are Zacharias and Elizabeth nothing? Is Joseph the Betrothed nothing? Here are towering figures within — let me put it this way — the close family circle of God, and they have no work at all to do.
None at all. It never even crosses anyone's mind to trouble them. And they are ready. Ready. Because out of love the Saints do nothing else. They help the people who are struggling.
Midnight comes. As far as we're concerned it could be raining somewhere far off, thundering away in the East. We know nothing about any of this. We have lived ten years, twenty, thirty, fifty, some of us have reached a hundred — and nothing of this. That is why we come away empty.
Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss. We need to learn what is truly to our own advantage. If we are going to approach some important person, or take out a loan, or whatever it may be, my dear ones, we work every angle, we go all the way round, we ask where to put our foot and whom to push, whom to turn to, whom to press, and we learn every clever trick in order to obtain material and temporary benefits.
But when it comes to eternal things, we do not know how to act. And so, because of these two verses in this passage about the Canaanite woman: the moment the Apostles came in to the Lord, the Lord opened the conversation, and we had these good results.
And from His answer — from her prayer and from the mercy of God toward this believing soul, even though she was a pagan — we are told that her daughter was healed from that very hour. She was seen from a distance; she was healed without being asked anything and without pleading for herself at all.
Now you may say to me: well, what could she do? She was possessed by a demon — could she have pleaded for herself? Can an infant plead for itself? Exactly. It is precisely the same thing. Just as those people could not plead and others pleaded for them, and they received on account of others, so it is here too: the infant cannot plead, and tomorrow it may die.
And since those who are not baptised of water and of the Spirit will never see the Kingdom of Heaven — as Christ said in that dialogue with the good Nicodemus, which we read in the third chapter of John — the rest of us are obliged to take responsibility on that child's behalf.
To take it up on her behalf, and on behalf of the little one, of the child, and so on. And then Christ shows mercy, He cleanses the person, He helps the person. Of course, where a person's free will is at work, one person can still plead for another, but that other person may, in full knowledge and by his own free will, refuse to accept it for a time.
If he refuses to accept it, then the prayer returns to you. Prayer is, so to speak, like a check that you send to someone in need. But that person, in his pride, although he is notified, does not go to collect it, and the check is returned as undelivered. Is that not what happens when the person refuses to collect it, or cannot be found? It is exactly the same.
We will receive our reward, but he, in his pride, did not want to change. That, however, happens with a grown person. Here, though, concerning infant baptism, we have one example.
In the face of the arguments and the attacks made by the enemies of our Church, we are in the right and we may do this, because Christ Himself has left it so — by His own gesture, by His own life, in so many other cases, and most particularly in the one we read this evening.
So then: right belief, that Christ can do all things. A humble mind. And perseverance in prayer. That is the threefold rule of the Christian. When a Christian believes in the One he is speaking to, and second has a humble mind, and third persists, holds on, does not lose heart in his prayer, as Paul says, he will have good results both for this world and for the other.
Which I pray for one another and for all. Amen.
Δεν θέλεις να σε υβρίσουνε, δεν θέλεις να σε αδικήσουνε. Δε θέλεις να σε κλέψουνε. Ποιος είσαι εσύ; Πώς τολμάς; Εγώ σου έχω φτιάξει νόμον ευεργετικόν. Αν συμβούν αυτά τα πράγματα, να σε μακαριώ στην αιωνιότητα. Πώς μου το γυρίζεις πίσω;
Τι θα πεις; Έχετε διαβάσει ποτέ στην Έξοδο, όταν ευρέθησαν στη δύσκολη στιγμή οι Εβραίοι, που δεν είχαν νερό επί τρεις ημέρες — τρία εκατομμύρια κόσμος;
Το άκουσε η γυναίκα. Πότε ο Χριστός ομίλησε; Όταν οι Απόστολοι παρουσιάστηκαν. Τι είδες εδώ; Τις πρεσβείες. Αυτές που απορρίπτουν οι αιρετικοί. Όλα απευθείας στον Θεό, να τα πω. Τι τη θέλεις, λέει, την Παναγία;
Δεν ζητώ να μου δώσεις από εκείνο που έχεις και το προορίζεις για αυτούς, να τους το δώσεις, να μην τους στερήσω. Όμως εγώ ζητώ ψιχία Αυτούς μάτια άνοιξες, τάφους άνοιξες, λεπρούς καθάρισες Τι δεν τους έκαμε σε αυτούς;
Βλέπετε κάτω σε δυο λέξεις πως αναπνέει ο Ορθόδοξος και βλέπει ότι είναι σωστή η πίστης του. Ποιος θα μπορέσει να μου το αμφισβητήσει αυτό; Γιατί βαφτίζεται το παιδί; Δεν βαφτίζεται για το προπατορικό λεγόμενο αμάρτημα;
Τρεις φορές μπαίνει στο όνομα του Πατρός και του Υιού και του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Η μητέρα λοιπόν προσεύχεται και το παιδί ξεδαιμονίζεται. Πώς λοιπόν μου απαγορεύεις και μου λες ότι πρέπει να ομολογήσει αυτό για να καθαριστεί;
«Βάπτισμα», λέγει ο πατέρας με τη μάνα, «θα βαπτιστούμε», και παίρνουνε και τα κουτσούβαλα και τα βαπτίζουν. Δεν έχουν δικαίωμα να βαπτίσουν τα παιδιά τους; Δεν εβαπτίστηκε η Λυδία και ο οίκος αυτής; Δεν εβαπτίστηκε ο δεσμοφύλαξ και ο οίκος αυτού; Όταν λέει «ο οίκος», τι; Τα ντουβάρια βαπτίσανε, το σπίτι βαπτίσανε ή τους ανθρώπους που είχαν μέσα, μικρούς και μεγάλους βαπτίσανε; Όταν λέει ότι ο Στεφανά οίκος, δεν βαφτίστηκε η οικογένεια; Μας λέει ότι δεν ήσαν μικρά;
Η θυγατέρα δεν παρουσιάστηκε πουθενά, η θυγατέρα ήταν στο σπίτι της, ούτε την ερώτησαν. Θέλεις, κόρη μου, να γίνεις καλά; Δεν την ερώτησαν. Πώς την εκβιάζεις, Χριστέ; Το καταλαβαίνετε αυτό;
Έδωσε εντολή από μακριά να φύγει το δαιμόνιο, να απαλλαχτεί η κόρη του δαιμονίου. Το παιδί που βαφτίζεται το πιστεύουμε ότι έχει δαιμόνιον ή δεν το πιστεύουμε; Το αβάφτιστο, πώς το λέει η θεολογία της γιαγιάς, το αρσενικό το αβάφτιστο;
Έχετε δει στις ευχές η Εκκλησία πόσα ονόματα Αγίων φέρει;
