And this evening, by the grace of God, I would like to speak about something from the Old Testament. For many people, the Old Testament is a closed book. People do not study it, even though it contains so many accounts that can help us in many ways.
Indeed, those of you who were with us for our previous talks will remember that we brought forward a figure from the Old Testament. The first was the Prophet Jonah, whose life teaches us a great lesson. Then, in our second talk, we turned to Job, another great figure whom we often draw upon.
Congratulations.
We discuss him without knowing precisely either his teaching or the course of his life, and without realizing that forty-two chapters are devoted to presenting this person to us. This evening, I will bring forward another figure from the Old Testament, one who is also connected with the New Testament: the Prophet Elijah. I do not know whether you are aware of this, but the Prophet Elijah has not yet experienced death.
Our Holy Church chants that the Prophet Elijah will come again and will once more play a part in matters of faith. This is what his dismissal hymn says: “The angel in the flesh, the foundation of the prophets, the second forerunner of the Second Coming of Christ, the glorious Elijah.”
The Church proclaims this, and those who bear his name hear it, yet we do not realize that the Prophet Elijah is indeed alive to this day and still sends us messages calling us to metanoia—to repent and return.
Thank you. Do you remember that, during the days of Pascha, I read to you the prescription he gave in Piraeus? “Repent, return, weep, and mourn, because slaughter is coming—coming upon humanity and upon the Greeks.”
Signed, Elijah the Tishbite. He is a great figure who lived approximately one thousand years before Christ. If anyone wishes to find where the Prophet Elijah first appears on the scene, he must turn to 1 Kings—or 3 Kingdoms in the Septuagint.
Those of you who have an Old Testament should know that two versions are in circulation. One is the text known as the Septuagint, where you will find this passage in 3 Kingdoms. There is also another paraphrased version published by the Bible societies, where you will find it in 1 Kings.
He first appears there, in the seventeenth chapter. As for his background, if one looks further back, one finds that he came from Tishbe, a place near Arabia, a small village somewhere in that region.
Tradition relates that when he was born, his father saw figures clothed in white. They came and wrapped the child in fire, and his father was frightened when he saw this strange thing happening to him. It is said that he went and asked the priests of that time, and they answered him prophetically:
That this child would clearly become a great man before God — and indeed he did become a great man before God. In the seventeenth chapter I am speaking of, we find the account of him like this: «And Elijah the Tishbite said» — I am putting it to you in simpler language, so that it can be followed a little more easily — «who was one of the inhabitants of Gilead, to Ahab», a king of that time, who was the ungodly king.
As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by the word of my mouth.
He imposed a canon—an ecclesiastical sentence—upon the king and his kingdom. “It will not rain again,” he told him. “Not only will it not rain, but not even dew will fall in the morning unless I give the word.” And that is exactly what happened.
My beloved, stand in awe of the clergy, whether they are good or bad. Revere the cassock; revere the clergy. Never set yourself against a priest. If he opens his mouth against you, or even curses you inwardly and says something against you, nothing can release you from it.
Just think: one man binds the hands of God in heaven. “It will not rain again,” he says, and God sends no more rain. It did not rain for three and a half years, until the Prophet Elijah prayed, and only then did it rain again. Everything dried up; everything died; every animal perished. No rain fell. “It will not rain again,” he said.
They possess power; they possess grace. Guard yourselves against excommunication by a clergyman. If you read the prayers of absolution found in the Church, you will hear of such cases. And if any of you have quarreled with a clergyman, even if you are in the right, ask his forgiveness.
Even if you are in the right, ask forgiveness. Here Elijah gives a command to God. The clergy possess power. God has given them authority for this world. Of course, as human beings they will be judged according to their deeds; but in their apostolic mission, as clergy and in their ministry, they are all-powerful.
They have the power to bind us so that we cannot even rise from our seats.
Read today’s newspapers. The hierarchs threatened Tsatsos not to sign the decree on abortions and make it law. “If you sign it,” they told him, “we will excommunicate you.” If only he knew what excommunication means! He would not have closed his eyes again until he received assurance that they would not excommunicate him. For they do not need to go out in public to excommunicate him; they can excommunicate him from their own room. They have almighty power in their hands.
God has granted them this. God is mightier than kings, rulers, tyrants, dictators, and the whole world. God is mightier. In any case, we do not pray for such means to be used.
Yet when necessary, they must be used. This Ahab, together with his wife Jezebel, worshiped foreign gods and led the people to foreign gods. Therefore, since he would not listen to reason, Elijah placed him under this kind of excommunication.
“I command God,” he says to him. “I entreat God through my prayer: it will not rain again.” And it did not rain again. Now Elijah himself would also have to suffer the consequences of the drought.
Of course he too would have suffered — where would he find water? But God goes ahead of him and provides for him, and He says to him: "And the word of the Lord came to him, saying: Depart from here, arise and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is opposite the Jordan; and you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded ravens to feed you there."
Elijah takes this very seriously. So God sends him to a brook called Chorath—Cherith in the paraphrased version—which is in the wilderness of the Jordan. More precisely, for those of you who have visited the Holy Land, it is at the Holy Monastery of Hozeva.
At the Holy Monastery of Hozeva, in the upper part, directly above the bell tower, is the cave where the Prophet Elijah lived after God sent him there. And down below, in front of it, is that river, that brook called Chorath, from which the Prophet Elijah drank water.
But where was he to find food? Who would give it to him? God provided for that as well. Through a raven He sent him bread and meat in the morning, the text says, and bread and meat in the evening. Elijah ate this food and drank from the brook.
Here we see that God looks after His people beforehand, caring for them so that they will not suffer.
They suffer. God sees that the measure Elijah asked for against Ahab and the others is a harsh one. Ahab may be faithless and hard-hearted, and so on. But what about everyone else? What about the children and the animals? Why should they suffer? God did not want that. And so He immediately began, on the one hand, to accept Elijah’s prayer and close the heavens, and on the other, to teach him an indirect lesson. You may ask which of the two is more important.
What is the indirect lesson here? If you read the Scriptures, you will know it too. But, for reasons I do not understand, you do not study them, and so you do not know. The question—and its answer—arises from this: Why did God feed Elijah through a raven? Elijah was such an eminent person, such a serious man of God, a zealot to the utmost degree; yet God sends this filthy bird to feed him.
You know that a raven feeds on carrion; think of its claws, its beak, and everything else. God could have sent Elijah his food through a cleaner bird or by some other means. Yet He did not. He enlisted the raven.
There is a psalm—Psalm 147, that is—which says in verse 9 that when the raven hatches its young in the nest, it abandons them.
And you know that the raven does not build its nest down on the plain, as we might expect. It builds in inaccessible places, high upon the rocks. If it built its nest below, out on the plain, one might say, “There are mosquitoes and worms there; the young ravens can eat those.”
But up there, amid the cold, not even a fly or a mosquito passes by—nothing at all. How are the young to survive? And yet God feeds the raven’s chicks up there.
That is why the raven is said to hate its own young. It rejects its own offspring, hatches its young, and then abandons them. But Divine Providence cares for them. Otherwise, there would be no ravens at all. If God did not hasten to feed the young ravens, no raven could exist anywhere.
So what is God saying to Elijah here? Look at this bird, the one that will not care even for its own young, its own flesh and blood. Look how it carries food to you, how it shows mercy to you. You have become harder than the raven itself. You for your part show no love, you show no condescension — no willingness to stoop down to them — to loose these people from these bans, from these bonds.
“How can you receive mercy and consolation while leaving them in such a state?” God does not tell him this directly. Indeed, God never tells a person his sin directly, because He wants the person to act freely, of his own accord.
He reminds him and speaks through his conscience, telling him that what he is doing is not right. He speaks to him through a sermon, a printed text, a dream, or some other means. He does not impose Himself by force and say, “No, you will not do this.”
He gives Elijah a standard by which to measure and compare himself: “Look, this bird is showing mercy to you. Why do you not show mercy to the other people?” And He leaves Elijah himself to lift the excommunication he had imposed.
For the one who bound you, the one who excommunicated you, is the one who must release you. Unless he has died; then a bishop must come and read the appropriate prayers so that you may be released. In any case, the outcome was that Elijah did as God had told him.
And Elijah did, it says, according to the word of the Lord. He went and settled beside the Brook Cherith, east of the Jordan. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. There is another lesson here as well.
Let's set that aside. Why doesn't He send him fish? Was God short of fish? Why doesn't He send him something else, eggs, cheese? Did God not have any? He sends him bread and meat. In the bread is the meat, the flesh; it is the Body of Christ. In the bread, Communion, He is sending him heavenly food; He was sending him Holy Communion in the Old Testament. I don't imagine anyone believes that He sent the raven off to steal meat from some butcher's shop and bread from some bakery, and that it picked it up and carried it to him.
It was angelic food; this food sent to the man was food provided by the Holy Spirit.
It was a type, a foreshadowing: here below in the wilderness, in this valley of weeping, far from Paradise, we must be nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ in order to return to Paradise. This is the lesson being taught.
And there is another lesson here that bears directly upon our subject. God used this black, unclean bird to teach people: Do not look at who brings the gift. Look at who sends it, what He is sending you, and what you need.
Elijah could have sent it back and said, “Never, never, never will I take anything from your beak.” Just as we say, “Am I supposed to receive antidoron—blessed bread after the Divine Liturgy—from that man’s hands?” Really? And who are you? Who are you?
Are you greater than Elijah, who took food from the raven’s beak and ate it? Who are you, and who am I? Elijah’s ravens are the clergy of today.
However unclean they may be, that is a matter concerning themselves—if indeed they are. For even if you hear a thousand accusations against the clergy, if I tell you not to believe a single one, I will not be far from the truth.
Do not believe even one of them, though you hear them a thousand times. That is what my experience has taught me about accusations, especially accusations against priests. Satan knows what he is doing; he prepares the way. You can see it, if you use even a little discernment.
Whenever they want to impose some piece of legislation, or introduce automatic divorce, they begin accusing bishops. Now they want to pass bills concerning abortion and other matters. ?
You should mind your own affairs and leave us alone—look to your own disgrace. These are schemes. ‘The television said it; the newspaper said it.’ Oh, how impressive! Who are the people who said it? Who exactly made the claim?
And who saw it? Who proved it? Do you understand? Be as careful as you can, because none of these things happen by chance. They are given for us to imitate and to learn from. The Prophet Elijah did not question God or take offense because He sent the raven.
For if that reasoning were applied consistently, they would have to accuse God for tolerating such clergy. In our own words, we would have to say, ‘Being what He is, of course He has representatives like these,’ as we were saying before. Yet that is not the truth.
Since He puts up with them, who am I and who are you not to put up with them? "He who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me," He says. The man who does not accept the clergy has no God, he has no Christ, he has nothing at all.
Let him become a clergyman himself; let him offer his own child for the clergy, and then we can discuss it. So this is what the passage teaches: Elijah receives without complaint the bread and meat in the morning, and the bread and meat in the evening.
Twice a day, He sends him bread and meat. This is at the ancient site, and we are speaking of a thousand years before Christ. And that cave still exists to this day, I tell you. We too were counted worthy to venerate it and photograph it; we have the photographs.
Joachim himself also went into that cave and prayed. There he received assurance that he should go back down, for his wife would conceive. And so the Most Holy Theotokos came to be conceived. It happened there, in that very place. Later, Saint Anna founded a women’s monastery there, in the surrounding area.
These are holy places mentioned in the Old Testament, but they remain hidden from most people; they know nothing about them.
And if you would also like to learn more about this matter of the raven, you can find it in Job, chapter thirty-eight, verse forty-one. There he offers up a hymn of praise, and he says this; he says: Who is it, he says, who makes the grass grow up there on the mountains, so that the animals feed on it, the wild beasts feed on it, and so on? Who is it? "Who prepares," he says, "the raven's food for him, when his young ones cry out to God, wandering about for lack of food?" Who is going to provide, who is going to feed the young ravens up there? Their own God does.
Job says this in his wisdom; as I told you, it is in chapter thirty-eight, verse forty-one.
Thus the Prophet reveals the power of the clergy, and also the power of excommunication. He reveals the power of prayer, because he prayed and entreated God: ‘There shall be no more rain except by the word of my mouth.’ He also reveals, in the Old Testament, the prototype of the Body and Blood of Christ.
It shows that we would receive the Body of Christ in the bread, for today it is through bread that we receive the Body of Christ. It also shows how God acts when a person goes to extremes: He seeks to help him remain always on the middle path.
He always makes allowances, in other words. He waits, He bears with us, and He lays down rules that aren't harsh, how shall I put it. Anyway. Now, this torrent — a winter stream — will naturally dry up. It only runs in winter.
It dried up. There was no water anymore. Once again God provides for him and sends him somewhere else. “And it came to pass after some days that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain upon the land” — naturally enough; it did not rain. “And the word of the Lord came to him, saying: ‘Arise and go to Zarephath of Sidon, and dwell there.’”
‘Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.’
He does not complain, contradict God, or put forward his own reasoning or his ego. For at first sight it would not be proper for a man to enter the home of an unrelated widow. He would expose both himself and the widow to suspicion.
Of course, things are not exactly like that today.
Exactly. The point is that what malicious tongues later say outside should not be true. That is what matters. Anyone can say whatever he likes; just let what he says not be true. Many of us do not want people to speak about us. But if it is not true, why does it trouble you? And if it is true, why do you not repent? Why try to silence him? In any case, he himself said nothing.
Thank you. With his head bowed in obedience, he rose and went to Zarephath. God did not send him to some black marketeer, because, as you know, whenever there is famine and pestilence, certain people hoard food. He sent him to a widow. And when you see what this widow had, you will say, “My God, it is almost as though You were not thinking clearly.”
Listen to this. “And he came to the gate of the city.” He set out and arrived at Zarephath. Back then the cities were walled all around. So he reached the gate. “And behold, there was a widow woman there gathering sticks” — she was picking up a few little pieces of wood. And he called out to her and said, “Bring me, I beg you, a little water in a vessel.” Bring me a drop of water, so I can cool off. And she — without so much as answering back, “And who are you?” or anything like that — she gets up and goes to fetch the water.
Then he called after her again and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand as well—bring me just a little piece of bread.” She stopped and said to him, “As the Lord God lives”—this was an oath, meaning, “I am telling you the truth; I am speaking before God.”
"As the Lord your God lives, I have no bread, but only a handful of flour" — one open handful of flour — "in the jar, and a little oil in the vessel." Just a finger's worth of oil in the little oil jug. "And behold, I am gathering two sticks, so that I may go in and prepare it for myself and for my son, and we shall eat it, and then we shall die."
In other words, Elijah’s visit came upon them on their very last day. They had surely been rationing what they had. Evangelia, the woman herself must have been as thin as a toothpick. I do not know what condition the child was in, especially if he was young and still growing.
It was a matter of mere days. He found them at the very last moment, as we say. Here we see that God intervenes precisely where you do not expect Him to. When everything is closing in upon you for evil and everyone tells you, “Nothing can be done,” He opens a little door—but it is God’s own little door. Therefore, never despair.
Whatever the doctors say, whatever the scientists say, whatever the seismologists say, the geologists, and who knows who else is saying it — it is God who has spoken. Because there was a woman once whose husband had died, and she was crying, sobbing her heart out.
Her little child saw her crying, came close to her, and said, “Why are you crying, Mama?” She replied, “Do you not know why I am crying, my child? Your father has died.” “Yes, I know that,” the child said. “We buried him the day before yesterday. But that is not the end of everything. Mama, has God died?” Those few words were enough to open her eyes to the truth that God had not died. And since God has not died, everything will be put in order and provided for.
If you ever hear that God has died and they have buried Him, then you may be afraid.
Do not be afraid, as long as God lives. As she says, “As the Lord your God lives, before whom I stand.” Things will not turn out as man says; they will turn out as God says and according to what is truly for your good—not only materially, but spiritually as well. For often it is not spiritually beneficial for a matter to turn out as we want it to.
This is why God does not always grant what we ask, although He can grant it, prove everyone wrong, and even overcome the order of nature, as the saying goes: “Where God wills, the order of nature is overcome.” Yet He does not do so, because He knows and has foreseen something better. He has something better in mind, and something more beneficial will arise from what He permits.
So this is why I say that she found herself at a moment when every door was closing on her. But it seems that this poor widow had been praying to God. And what did God do? He brought two weak people together. He didn't send her some black-market profiteer.
The Prophet had nothing. He had no water, not even a morsel of bread—nothing at all. And she was in exactly the same condition. Yet two powerless people, with God, become strong. The account then tells us that they ate, the neighborhood ate, and their relatives ate as well.
Let me continue the story. When Elijah heard her answer—that they had only a handful of flour, a little oil in the jug, and two sticks with which to make a small cake and then die—he said to her, “Do not be afraid. Go and do as you have said.”
“With those sticks, that little bit of flour, and that little oil, make a small cake. But first cut off a little of it and bring it to me. Then you and your son may eat what remains. Bring me one small cake first.”
“Afterward, prepare something for yourself and your son. For thus says the Lord God of Israel”—not the god of Olympus, but the God of Israel, the true God—“The jar of flour shall not be emptied, nor shall the jug of oil run dry, until the day when the Lord sends rain upon the face of the earth.”
He gives her a promise, and he brings that promise from God. The man had no gold, no wheat, no loads of oil—none of those things. But he had God’s blessing. His presence there meant this: through him, God would increase the flour every day, and it would not run out; He would increase the oil, and it too would not run out.
And it would not be only you and I who ate; the others would eat as well. For the passage goes on to say: “The widow went and did according to the word of Elijah; and she ate, and he ate, and her household ate.”
They ate for many days. And when Scripture says “her household,” I do not suppose the cupboards and stones were eating. Her mother-in-law would have eaten, her sister-in-law would have eaten, and whoever else was there. The others and the neighbors would have eaten too. When you are baking while everyone around you is hungry, the aroma carries down the street. Would she not give some to the others as well?
And the whole neighborhood was seasoned and blessed through that little hand of hers. Yet when malicious tongues saw that she had taken such a man into her home, who knows what they may have said? And even if they did not say it aloud, they surely said it within themselves, not knowing what kind of person he truly was.
And you know, the Lord speaks specifically about this woman. If you read the Gospel according to Luke, chapter four, verse twenty-six, you will find that, when He is speaking about widows and such matters, He says: “In the days of Elijah, there was a widow at Zarephath of Sidon.”
There were many widows, but only one true widow, one who remained chaste even after her husband’s death. That is, she remained honorable: she did not defile the bed of her departed husband or enter into a second marriage, and so forth. This true widow lived in Zarephath of Sidon. The Prophet Elijah was sent to her, and he helped her.
Here the Prophet’s lesson continues. There he was fed by a raven; here he is fed by a widow. Are you not ashamed, being a man, to be fed by a penniless widow, by a woman so weak and helpless? You see, she shows mercy; she shows love.
Do you not think that you, too, should show mercy and love to others? How can you accept mercy from such a weak person, while you yourself show no mercy to the people who are dying every day of hunger because of the drought?
Once again, God presses him and tightens the reins, as we say, so that Elijah may understand that God does not desire this. Elijah imposed this canon upon Ahab, and although Ahab deserved it—and deserved an even harsher canon and excommunication—God’s heart is so full of compassion that He does not desire such a thing.
For I often hear people say, “May lightning strike him on the head! May God cut out his tongue! May He tear out his eyes!” and so forth. Seriously, is that what God ought to do? Is that how He should act? God does not act that way.
You and I, in our malice and hardness of heart, may do such things. But God does not. God sees things differently. And it does not end there. Further on, Evangelia, there is another great lesson from the Prophet Elijah, where God shows him clearly what He is like.
God is mercy and longsuffering. He waits for the human person to return. He does not desire the death of the sinner. He grants him more days, even though the man insults Him and makes obscene gestures at Him with hands and feet, day and night.
God desires his salvation up there. He is like a mother, or like a doctor caring for a patient with typhoid fever who, because of his illness, often curses the doctor himself, curses his wife, curses his sister, and who knows what else.
But he bears it patiently and with a smile, because he knows that all these outbursts and reactions are caused by the illness, and he does not take them personally. He knows that once this storm of sickness has passed, the patient will kiss his hand and say, “Thank you; you have done me a great kindness.”
And when they tell the patient, “Do you know that you cursed this man? You cursed his wife and his brothers and sisters,” will he not say, “Did I really do such a thing?” It was not truly you; it was your illness. In other words, as we might say, it was your sin. God knows this. But we want revenge; we want to see the other person punished. Why? Because we believe that we are saints, you understand, and that the others may be punished.
In any case, this is what Elijah said to the woman. She did as he told her, and her entire household received mercy.
He remained there, though he did not know for how long, because God had not told him. In any case, the sentence—the canon, as we called it—against the kingdom of Ahab and Jezebel continued. One day the woman’s child, her only son, died. She explained it according to a superstition that, unfortunately, still exists today and was very widespread then: because she had welcomed a man of God into her home, God had remembered her sins, punished her, and taken away her child.
Her child. In other words, if she had not taken a man of God into her house, God would not have remembered her sins. It is like some of us, men and women alike: when we are up near the sanctuary, we do not talk there, we do not chat. But if we are at the back, further back, then we talk. Is God not there as well? God is up front, at the sanctuary; that is where He is. Further back you can settle in for a full-blown conversation. Do you see? That is how it is. It is like what Peter said, if you remember, when he let down the nets and filled the two boats.
When the two fishing boats were filled with fish, he said to Him, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man.” God will remember my sins and destroy me. In any case, here it says: “After these things, the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell ill, and his illness became exceedingly severe, until there was no breath left in him.”
That is, he fell asleep—he died. And she said to Elijah, “What have you against me, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sins to God’s remembrance and to put my son to death?” But he said to her, “Give me your son, whom you are holding.”
And he took the dead child from her arms and carried him up to the upper room, to the room upstairs where he was staying. For it was their custom to receive guests in a separate upper room.
They kept it as a separate room and received their guests there. And the prophet laid the child upon his own bed. Then he cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, have You brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I am staying?”
“With whom I am dwelling as a stranger” — that You should put her son to death? And he stretched himself out three times upon the child. The child was lying there below him, and he stretched himself out three times over the child. There is a particular reason for that. Now pay attention to this: three times upon the child. And he cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, let the soul of this child, I pray, return into him.” And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah.
And the Lord heard Elijah, and the child’s soul returned within him, and he came back to life.
Do you know what is said about this? The child whom the Prophet Elijah raised from the dead was the Prophet Jonah, whom I spoke to you about the other day.
You see here a type of the Holy Trinity in the Old Testament.
Why, then, you Jehovah’s Witnesses, do you refuse to accept the Holy Trinity? Why did Elijah not stretch himself over the child once, in the name of Jehovah, but three times, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit? If a person studied the Scriptures, he would not become a heretic.
There is ample evidence for a person to find what he needs so that he will not deny his faith. In any case, if reincarnation existed, where did the child’s soul go when he died? Was a donkey then born, so that the soul could enter it?
Because that is what they believe — that it goes into some cat, or some dog, or into some other person. And when the soul left and then went back again, did the dog drop dead? Did the cat die, or did that other person die? Isn't that how it would have to be? Just look how senseless a thing this reincarnation is that they talk about.
No philosophy is needed here; you need only pay attention to simple things. Then you understand how sound our faith is and how much truth there is in what Holy Scripture tells us. Where did the soul go when the child died? Did they put it in a tin can? Where did it go? They say that it went somewhere and entered someone else.
When does the soul enter a human being? When a man and a woman come together, is that not when human life begins within the mother’s womb? Consequently, for me to die, there would have to be a man and a woman coming together at that very moment, so that my soul could go there on command.
Made to order. And then, since the soul is under orders to leave that body, the man over there has to die so that the soul can come back here. Think how ridiculous the things are that people are discussing out there — and we swallow these things so easily. 'Bring it back,' he says, 'the soul.' And the soul returns. Not just any soul — the child's own soul, the very same one. 'And the soul came back into the child, within him, and he lived again. And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house.'
Up in the upper room Elijah was alone with the child; he did not take the mother with him.
He went upstairs carrying the child dead and brought him down alive, and gave him to her. He gave the child to his mother, and Elijah said, “See, your son is alive.” And the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this I know that you are a man of God.”
“And that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”
Here Elijah’s stay in this household comes to an end.
Now another scene follows. Because the entire kingdom was suffering, people were dying, animals were perishing, and so forth, they had left no stone unturned in their search for Elijah, believing that he was the cause of their misery.
And the question is this: was Elijah the cause of their misery, or was sin?
Ahab and Jezebel, the queen, sought to find Elijah and summon him. They did not seek to repent, just like that other woman who sought to silence the Forerunner instead of putting an end to her unlawful union with her brother-in-law.
Do you remember? Sin makes a person dizzy; it clouds his judgment.
We are faithful to Him. And Elijah was to say to Ahab, “Call your masters and all those false prophets whom the lady, Queen Jezebel, consults, and let us put them to a test.”
What was the test? It was this: they would take two offerings for a whole burnt sacrifice—in other words, two young bulls.
Calves. We will prepare them for sacrifice, but we will not light the fire. You will pray for your god to send down fire from heaven. And if your god sends fire from heaven and consumes the burnt offering, then I will make a prostration and acknowledge that he is the true God. I will stop arguing about these things, and we will become friends. But if your god does not send down fire and mine does, then...
“Then you will have to believe in my God.” And they agreed to carry out this test, and so they did. I do not know whether those of you who have visited the Holy Land have also visited this place. It remains to this day on Mount Carmel.
Mount Carmel — do you know where Mount Carmel is? It rises just above Haifa.
Those of you who traveled by ship to Haifa will have seen it rising above the city, rather like Lycabettus Hill. Mount Carmel begins there. The place is in the care of Roman Catholics, and there stands the altar that the Prophet Elijah built with twelve stones.
These were a type of the twelve tribes of Israel. Upon the altar he placed the bull and poured water over it—twelve containers of water—and he lit no fire. The account here relates these events and tells us exactly how they happened.
In any case, he said to them, “How long will you go limping on both feet? See to it that you stand upright.” Then Elijah said—and I shall read it to you—then Elijah said to the people, “Come near to me.”
For they had been praying the whole day long, and, as Scripture says, "there was no voice, and there was no one who heard" — no answer at all. In fact, toward late afternoon he mocked them and said this to them: "Call upon him with a loud voice." Shout, he says, shout.
“For he is a god. Perhaps he is talking with someone, or is occupied, or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened. Shout louder!” They even cut themselves in order to appease their god and make him send down fire. Nothing happened.
And they called out with a loud voice. And they cut themselves, as their custom was, with knives and with spears, until the blood ran from them. But midday came and went. Nothing; there was no voice, there was no answer. Then Elijah said to them: "Come near to me." And all the people came near to him, because a whole gallery of onlookers had turned up by then, a crowd had gathered.
It was not only Elijah and Jezebel’s four hundred and fifty prophets who were there. The people also came to see the test—what would happen and who the true God was.
He repaired, it says, the altar of the Lord that had been torn down. And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob — of Israel, that is, the one to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, "Israel shall be your name" — and he built up the stones into an altar.
The stones of the altar, as I told you, remain there to this day. He built it with those stones in the name of the Lord. Then he made a trench around the altar—a deep trench all the way around, large enough to hold two measures of seed. He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces, and laid it upon the wood. Then he said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it over the burnt offering and over the wood.” And he said...
He said, “Do it a second time,” and they did it a second time; and he said, “Do it a third time,” and they did it a third time. That is, three times four — twelve jars of water in all. And the water ran all around the altar. A lake, he says — there’s a whole sea over there. And the trench filled up with water.
At the hour of the offering, the Prophet Elijah drew near and said, “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that You are God in Israel, that I am Your servant, and that at Your word I have done all these things.
Hear me, O Lord, hear me, so that this people may know that You, O Lord, are God, and that You have turned their hearts back again. You have turned them back. Then fire fell from the Lord and consumed the whole burnt offering, the wood, and the earth, and licked up the water in the trench.
And all the people fell on their faces and said, “The Lord—He is God! The Lord—He is God!” The people said this. But the prophets said nothing; they remained unrepentant. The prophets said nothing; they remained unrepentant. It was the people who confessed it.
Then Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon and slaughtered them there. He slaughtered all four hundred and fifty with his own hand. Outside, there is a remarkable statue of Elijah holding the sword with which he slew those unrepentant prophets of Baal.
This is where some people stumble, because they have not studied the Scriptures.
They say, “How can this be? And these are not the only deeds charged against him, so to speak; there are others as well.” On another occasion he called down fire and it consumed fifty men. Then he called down fire again, and it consumed another fifty soldiers who had gone to arrest him.
And now, add the four hundred and fifty, and you have about five hundred and fifty people. How can this man be a saint, so that we venerate him as a saint? Do you see the difficulty? There are some people who simply cannot get hold of this, cannot digest it. So let me tell you this: it is true that the law says, "You shall not kill," but the trouble is, it also says to kill. That is what it says — how can anyone say it does not?
There is not only that commandment in Holy Scripture; there is also Deuteronomy. Do you not know this? Deuteronomy means the second law. Is there not a book called Deuteronomy in Holy Scripture? In Deuteronomy, exceptions are given. Killing is not merely permitted there; in certain cases, it is commanded.
When people lead others to foreign gods, they are to be put to death. Elijah, then, in his extreme zeal, applied this provision and slaughtered them—and indeed, with his own hand. Do you understand? If you wish, you can find this in Deuteronomy 13:5.
There you will find the command God gives that those who lead people to idolatrous gods are to be destroyed. You will also find it in Deuteronomy 17:20. There are two specific provisions that make an exception to the commandment, “You shall not murder.”
Therefore, do not be scandalized. Deuteronomy 17:5 and 18:20.
Those people are mistaken; they have not studied. If they had read, they would know how the matter stands. For the point is not that I should do what I say, but what God says. I do not know whether you have read another incident, a little further on, in chapter 20, verses 35 to 38.
Do you know what it says?
A prophet was once passing by and said to a man, “Strike me with your fist.”
“A punch? What is this? You want me to punch you?” He did not punch him, and a bear came out and devoured him. Do you understand? But why did the prophet want this man to strike him? You see, there was a high-ranking official who would avoid the prophet whenever he saw him. The prophet wanted to approach him and speak with him, but he could not get near him because the official recognized him. So he asked the other man to punch him, so that his eyes and face would swell and he could appear before the official in disguise.
so that the prophet could appear before him in that condition and deliver his message. But the other man would not help him, and for that reason a bear devoured him.
Don't bring your own reasoning into it — it is God who is speaking. Leave off the back-and-forth, the "this is yours, this is mine." It is permitted, I said: the child watches the lady and climbs up, he sees the little glass and climbs up onto the chair to reach that little glass, and the poison kills the child.
Do you not see these things—these false notions of ours? God is the One who speaks. So, when God speaks and God regards him as a Saint, who am I to say that the Prophet Elijah is not a Saint? How could I say such a thing? I cannot. But I am telling you where Scripture says this. Read it, then, so that this question may be resolved for you, if you too have this question.
In any case, to continue and bring this subject to a close: after all these events, the Prophet Elijah went away and hid somewhere. But God wanted to bring this matter to its resolution. When Elijah went into hiding, he wanted to die; he had fallen into despair.
Evidently, God withdrew His grace from him and left him to experience his human weakness. He began to be afraid, because when the queen learned that he had slaughtered her four hundred and fifty prophets, she declared that by that hour the following afternoon his head would no longer be on his shoulders.
And this man, who had called down fire from heaven so many times, was terrified, and he went and hid himself. And he said, “Let me die.” And an angel comes and taps him on the back. And he says to him, “Come on, get up. Eat. Take, eat.” He turned and looked.
There really was bread there—a loaf baked on the coals—and water. But he neither ate nor drank. He had given up; he wanted to die. He turned over to the other side and fell asleep again. He had no strength to go anywhere. The angel returned and once again touched him on the back.
And he says to him, “Arise, take and eat, for you have a long journey ahead of you.” So he gets up, gathers his strength, and comes to himself. And he eats some of this bread—an enkryphias, what we would call a flatbread, angelic bread—and drinks some of the water.
Strengthened by that food, he walked for forty days. From there he went to Mount Horeb, to Sinai. Those of you who have visited know that Saint Catherine’s Monastery is there at the summit, while lower down is the mountain where Moses received the Tablets.
Between Saint Catherine’s Monastery and the mountain, down along the slope, is where the Prophet Elijah went. The remains of his dwelling—or, so to speak, the Prophet’s ruins—are still there today. He went there and hid in a cave.
There God appeared to him, after he had made the journey in the strength of that food. Here we see the strength imparted by Holy Communion, for it too is angelic food, not human food. God appeared to him there and said, “Go out, Elijah, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and mighty wind tore through the mountains and shattered the rocks before the Lord.
But the Lord was not in the wind—not in that display of great power. “And after the wind, an earthquake”; but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came the sound of a gentle breeze.
When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his sheepskin mantle, went out, and stood at the entrance of the cave; and there he spoke with God. God was teaching him a lesson: “I am not fire,” He was telling him, “nor am I an earthquake, nor am I a wind.”
“You showed no restraint: in one place you slaughtered them all, elsewhere you caused them to die of hunger, and elsewhere of thirst, and so forth. But I,” He tells him, “am a gentle breeze.” God was still teaching him what He is. Therefore, you too must not be hasty—do not be hasty. Take care not to go to extremes, and never set yourselves against anyone.
Always show longsuffering, as far as possible, because God is found in longsuffering. Pray for people, whether they are clergy or laity, whether they are your enemies or your friends.
May they come to the truth, understand how God thinks, and realize that He desires the salvation of mankind. We shall stop here, because our time does not permit us to continue. In any case, you will have gained some understanding of this person, who remains with us to this day.
And he will return at the Second Coming of our Lord. I pray that he will not come with the rod, as he did in those days when he went to Ahab and Jezebel.
Ο Ηλίας θα μπορούσε να το επιστρέψει, να πει: «Ποτέ, ποτέ, ποτέ δεν το παίρνω εγώ από τα χέρια σου». Όπως λέμε εμείς: «Εγώ να πάρω αντίδωρο από αυτού τα χέρια;» Σοβαρά; Και ποιος είσαι εσύ; Ποιος είσαι εσύ;
Σεις, κοιτάξτε την άκρη σας και αφήστε μας, την πομπή σας εσείς. Είναι τεχνάσματα αυτά. Το είπε η τηλεόραση, το είπε η εφημερίδα. Σοβαρά τα λάχανα. Ποιοι είναι αυτοί που το είπανε; Ποιος είναι αυτός που το είπε;
Ημέρας πολλάς. Όταν λέμε ο οίκος, δεν νομίζω ότι τρώγαν οι ντουλάπες και τα λιθάρια. Θα τρώγει και η πεθερά, θα τρώγει και η κουνιάδα, θα τρώγει και ξέρω εγώ. Και θα τρώγαν και οι άλλοι και οι γείτονες. Να ψήνεις τώρα και να είσαι πεινασμένος, σε παίρνει μυρουδιά παρακάτω. Δεν θα δίνει και στους άλλους;
Εσύ δεν νομίζω ότι πρέπει να κάνεις έλεος και αγάπη στους άλλους; Πώς εσύ καταδέχεσαι και ελεείσαι από έναν τέτοιον αδύνατον άνθρωπο; Και εσύ δεν ελεείς τους ανθρώπους άλλους που πεθαίνουν καθημερινώς από την πείνα, λόγω της ανομβρίας;
Υπάρχουν αρκετά στοιχεία να βρει ο άνθρωπος, εκείνα που του χρειάζονται, να μην αρνηθεί την πίστη του. Εν πάση περίπτωση εάν υπήρχε μετεμψύχωση, όταν πέθανε το παιδί, πού πήγε η ψυχή; Έπειτα γεννήθηκε κάποιος γάιδαρος, να πήγε η ψυχή;
Και ρωτάται: ο Ηλίας είναι η αιτία της κακοδαιμονίας ή η αμαρτία;
Και 450 τώρα είναι περίπου 550 άνθρωποι. Πώς είναι δυνατόν αυτός να είναι Άγιος, για να τον προσκυνάμε σαν Άγιον; Καταλάβατε; Δεν μπορούν ορισμένοι αυτό το πράγμα να το πιάσουν, να το χωνέψουν. Λοιπόν, σας λέγω το εξής: είναι αλήθεια ότι ο νόμος λέγει «ου φονεύσεις», αλλά έλα που λέει και να φονεύσεις. Λέει έτσι, πώς δεν λέει;
Ξέρετε τι λέγει;
