I had promised to answer another question and to make that question our subject. It is a broad issue concerning marriage and the bearing of children—an issue which, as you yourselves understand, afflicts all humanity.

A kind soul wrote the question on these two slips of paper, and I copied it out clearly here because I would not have been able to make it out otherwise. Allow me to read how the question is presented, and then we shall give an answer concerning this matter.

Listen, Mr. Panagopoulos: you yourself say this often, and other preachers do too, that it is a sin for someone to avoid having children. And you are content just to forbid it, without ever giving a solution to this enormous problem, or you only say, 'don't do this, don't do that.'

“You say that this brings one punishment, that brings certain sufferings, and so forth. So I ask you—and here I have preserved the practical part exactly—a father asks you: his only means of livelihood is a daily wage of fifty-two drachmas, and there is absolutely no other prospect of improving his income, unless we leave it all to winning the lottery.

“How can this man understand that Christ is the Lord and that His burden is light? He certainly has the good intention of putting everything into practice, but this is where he stumbles—and not only he, but all humanity.

“This is the greatest wound that has ever existed, yet I have found the solution neither from anyone’s lips nor in any book. You all speak only of prohibitions. And so unmarried young men and women are afraid to take a step toward marriage.

“Those who are married stop at one or two children, and the only people able to put everything you say into practice are elderly men and women. Therefore, I beg you to clarify this problem as fully as possible.”

And the question continues: “Does the Church perhaps wish to remain complacent about this issue because She is concerned only with spiritual matters, while as far as material matters are concerned She does nothing, and thus walks on one leg, so that not everyone can follow Her? Does She forget that man has not only a spirit but also a body and obligations? While She makes so many efforts for spiritual things, unfortunately She takes no interest at all in material things—that is, in improving people’s lives.

“Or is She content merely to watch a laborer receive fifty-two drachmas to support an entire family with five or ten children—not merely one or two, which those in authority imagine constitutes a family—while another man amasses riches, and the Church, who is a mother, remains complacent?

“Therefore, Mr. Panagopoulos, you must clarify this issue and not merely forbid it. And if there is no solution, or if you are not qualified to provide one, then you should not say that the marriage beds of families have become places of fornication and simply stop there.”

“Of course, I am not speaking about those who possess no trace of the fear of God. I mean at least someone who is trying to become better but who, unfortunately, can find no peace concerning this issue.” That, then, is the question, the perplexity, and the demand of the brother or sister who has raised this matter tonight.

Because, as I told you, and as you yourselves will hear, this is a wider issue, one that concerns many souls. And, as many people would say, it concerns the whole of humanity. So I thought I should not simply confine myself to a dry answer to this man, but that we should discuss it at greater length, more broadly, and find the cause — because what we are dealing with here are effects.

What this brother presents is the result of something else. But whenever we encounter bad results, we are obliged to seek the cause of those bad results. We rush ahead without considering why this has happened. Christ never looks merely at the results; He always looks at the cause.

He does not look simply at what a person does; He looks at why the person does it, and He seeks to heal that ‘why’ so as to prevent what follows from it. When a man reaches the point of saying, “I find it difficult to have children and to remain faithful to what I promised and accepted at the time of my marriage,” we must look deeper.

When I stood there attentively while the priest read to me for three quarters of an hour, reminding me that I should be like Sarah, Rebecca, and Rachel; that my children should multiply like the sand of the sea; and that I should be blessed with fine children—healthy, beautiful, sensible, and with all those other blessings—then one is obliged to go back and discover the reason for this misery.

There is clearly a valid concern here. This matter cannot be resolved with pencil and paper. Precisely because it is a more fundamental issue, I thought we should discuss it from the very beginning. Now, at the outset, this brother briefly accuses me and the others. Why do I say these things? Because I am obliged to say them. It is not I who forbid this; it is forbidden by Him who established marriage.

I merely remind people of it. And if this brother cannot fulfill it, for reasons whose validity we shall examine later, someone else may be able to fulfill it. We must not, therefore, forbid the speaker from proclaiming it simply by saying, “The speaker has no solutions.”

The solutions are found in Him who gave us these institutions and these prohibitions. Unless a person seeks the cause there, he will never find the answer. An accusation is also made against the Church.

It is true that the Church is a spiritual body, not a material organization. And Christ said: seek first the Kingdom and His righteousness, and He will give you everything else. Consequently, we cannot accuse the Church, even though Her work is hindered. The Church does offer Her services.

She offers help, maintains orphanages, and serves in many other ways. Both believers and even unbelievers always find warmth and comfort within the Church. Nevertheless, the Church always presents Herself first and foremost as a spiritual body.

That, then, is not the Church’s primary task. The Apostles immediately made a clear distinction: “We will not occupy ourselves with ministries of serving tables and the like; the word of God must come first.” I wanted to make it clear that this applies to all Christians, so long as they are faithful. The Church is not what is at issue in this matter.

We look at this matter from our own point of view because we have gotten the order wrong. That is precisely why we see things from the outside and make accusations. Yet, as I have said, organized charity does exist in the Church, beginning from the days of Jesus.

Of course, because of our pride, we consider it beneath us even to approach the Church’s charitable fund and receive twenty, fifty, or a hundred drachmas—enough, if nothing else, to pay the water bill or the electricity bill. We refuse to do it. Christ, however, accepted such support. Our refusal is counted against us.

Christ Himself was fed and supported, and His whole ministry and movement were sustained from the possessions of certain women. The first organized charitable support surrounding the preaching of the Gospel existed in Christ’s own days. Christ had no purse of His own, no money of His own, and no private property.

Certain women contributed from their own possessions, as Luke writes, and ministered to and supported that entire work. So when Christ condescended to be supported, to carry on His work, and to live from the possessions of others—particularly of women—who are we to refuse the utmost loving-kindness?

There are even people who consider it beneath them to have their children baptized free of charge. The Church says, “I will baptize your child.” But the person answers, “No, you will not baptize my child.” “Do not worry about the expense; I will baptize the child for free. Bring the child.” Still, he refuses. Human pride is wounded.

And so there are unbaptized children, on the pretext that too much money is being demanded. Yet churches are willing to baptize them. In Athens and the surrounding districts, there are churches that set aside a day on which both Holy Matrimony and Baptisms are performed free of charge.

But the person wants to make a grand appearance with the male and female wedding sponsors, the money, and everything else. He wants to buy all the finery—the white things, the green things, the yellow things, and all the rest.

What are the father’s motives? Is it that he does not want to pay? He leaves the child unbaptized until the age of eight, ten, or twelve. One day he will have to answer for not caring enough to have the child baptized, even free of charge, because it was plainly his pride, not his lack of money, that held him back. Now, this group of people, caught in such a bind, deserves our sympathy. “I want to start a family,” someone says, “but I cannot.” That is no small matter. So what will happen within this conflict, when he can see the truth? For such a cry to burst from him in protest, it is because he sees the truth, yet standing before that truth is another reality, one that is real for him as well.

In reality, the financial question compels us to cry out and say that things are not as they seem. Yet, unfortunately, this is how matters stand. Before I reach that point, however, let me say that this is an effect, not the cause. Please allow me to put things in their proper order.

Then we can see why marriage has failed today and why its purpose is not being fulfilled under these economic pressures, when people want to fulfill it but cannot. I understand. Very well, then: please follow me. I will not tire you. I will try, briefly and with a few examples that I have noted down, to say what needs to be said, so that I may make the matter easier for those who genuinely desire to follow it.

First of all, the matter concerns marriage. Why is marriage unable to bear its proper fruit, with economic reasons being put forward as the explanation? Let us begin by asking: Where did marriage come from? What is this thing called marriage? Was it established by human beings or by God?

God made it. Marriage is there in Genesis. When the world was first created, the plan of marriage was given, and the purpose of marriage, and the institution of marriage. When Moses, writing in Genesis 1:27, says: “And God made man according to His own image; in the image of God He made him.”

“Male and female He created them,” and He blessed them and spoke to them. There God establishes marriage. When God cast Adam into a deep sleep, fashioned the woman, and brought her to him, God Himself was the first one to lead the bride to her husband.

God established this from the very beginning; therefore, marriage is instituted by God—it is truly established by God. And that is why the devil attacks everything made by God. What, then, does marriage mean? What is its definition?

The definition of marriage, briefly, is this: marriage is a Mystery in which the grace of the Holy Spirit sanctifies the conjugal union. Through the Holy Spirit the two become one flesh, and He strengthens the husband and wife so that they may rightly fulfill the purpose of marriage.

By the grace of the Holy Spirit the two of them are strengthened, so that they may attain the purpose of marriage and the fruits it is meant to bear. The divine Chrysostom says: «Marriage is a lawful joining of flesh, a union» — lawful, that is, not unlawful, but according to the law of God.

“And the two shall become one flesh,” as the priest says through the Holy Spirit during the wedding service.

Why, then, does marriage fail when God established it? Why should it fail if God Himself established it?

It fails for two reasons.

First, because not everyone is suited for marriage; and second, because the God who established marriage was never consulted.

As for the person with whom one is to enter into the communion of marriage, marriage is the most serious crossroads in a person’s life. Before marrying, a person is obliged to ask whether he should marry at all.

And also whom he should marry—what woman he should take, or what man she should take. This is precisely what is lacking among us. The modern man reaches out his hand and chooses his own Eve.

His Eve, his own side. But because he took his own interests, his ego, his flesh, and his empty head as his guide, he chose an Eve, a supposed support, and now he is left broken-backed, because she was not truly his own side. Who knows which woman is Adam’s own side, which one is his Eve? Only Christ knows; only God knows which woman is right for man A and which man is right for woman B. People do not know. If we examine failed marriages, whether the failure concerns their spiritual life, their life together, material matters, or bearing children, we will find that ninety-nine percent of these marriages failed because people took matters into their own hands and made their own choice: either the woman chose the Adam whom she imagined was right for her, the star of her dreams; or the man chose the Eve whom he imagined was the moon and the morning star, when in truth they were not even birds.

In the Old Testament, God intervenes and gives guidance on this matter. In Proverbs, chapter 19, verse 14, the Holy Spirit has written something to admonish those considering marriage. It says: “Fathers divide house and possessions among their children, but a wife is joined to a man by God.”

You inherit houses and fields from your father, it says, but it is the Lord who gives you your wife. And I ask the person who wrote this—and everyone else as well: Did God truly give you your wife?

Or was the match arranged by some woman or other? Did we take matters into our own hands because we were in love, or for one reason or another? This must always be examined, because we cannot hold Christ responsible and ask Him to pay the bill for what we ourselves have broken in the heat of our passion.

He does not pay for the things we break like that.

Why can't you cope? Did you ask me? The wife I gave you, or the husband you married — was that with my blessing, or did you drag me in by force to bless you?

This is something every person must examine. Whether married or unmarried, each one must take it seriously.

Secondly, who told you that you must marry? The whole world was not made only for marriage. The world was also made for virginity and for many other callings. There is not only marriage; there is also virginity. Christ was a virgin and did not marry. Saint John the Forerunner was a virgin. Saint Kyriake remained a virgin. The Most Holy Theotokos, the Mother of the Lord, remained a virgin. More than ninety percent of the Saints were virgins. Did they go to Hell? No, they did not.

Did they go to Hell? Have you asked yourself, have you carefully considered this great matter of marriage? What did you take it to be, some grand transaction? Marriage means caring for one another.

Thank you.

It demands sacrifice. It means putting your neck — if you'll allow me the expression — under the yoke, the way oxen do. Your wife on one side and you on the other. And the two of you pull together, like a pair of oxen. More than anything else, this demands sacrifice. In fact, the divine Chrysostom...

John Chrysostom, however, has a beautiful saying. He says the following:

“No one enters into marriage without encountering affliction.” There is no man or woman who will marry, be crowned, and take a spouse without facing hardships. Yet we want a marriage with no clouds, no reefs, no suffering, no misfortunes, no sorrow, no nakedness, no poverty—none of these things. But that cannot be reconciled with marriage.

From the moment you begin thinking of marriage, you must sit down and consider it carefully. Christ says in the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 14, verse 28: “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see whether he has enough to finish it? Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and is unable to complete it, all who see it will begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was unable to finish.’”

“This man began to build and was not able to finish.” The man had thought it through. Or did he wake up one morning with only fifty-two drachmas, though the day before he had been saying that he would make a thousand a day, millions a day? No. For the most part, we can foresee such things. Given the state of the economy, our income, my own line of work, and so on, perhaps the daily wage is simply not enough for such an undertaking. We need to think it through.

You entered into an undertaking that requires expense, care, struggle, and much else. Then afterward you begin looking for someone to blame. But the Gospel asks: Did you calculate all this beforehand, or did you simply wake up one morning and discover that you could not make ends meet?

Did you not know beforehand that you would be unable to manage? Why did you rush in and drag another person down with you? Why increase the misery? Why did you leap into marriage? Why did you go ahead with it? Christ says that you must first sit down and consider. He then gives the example of someone preparing to go to war. I do not know whether you ever read Holy Scripture or whether you are familiar with these things.

These things. “Or what king, going to make war against another king, will not first sit down and consider whether he is able, with ten thousand men, to meet the one coming against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.” In other words, He gives another example and says that if someone sees the difficulties, he does not undertake the campaign against the other king, because he sees that he would need to have...

He must consider whether, with ten thousand men, he can stand against an army of thirty thousand. Many of us do not hasten to examine what will follow. We see only as far as the honeymoon. We do not look beyond the honey to the bitterness that comes afterward.

But the person of faith, the Christian, the one who fears God, who thinks ahead about what tomorrow will bring and how they will cope, so as to stay true to the will of the Lord and true to the promises they will make at the wedding — that they will keep faith — and there will be children and everything else, so how will I manage it all? — that person is forced to wait, forced to entreat God, forced to place the whole matter in His hands. Because, my beloved, if marriages fail, it is because they are human marriages, not divine ones.

A marriage blessed by Christ from the outset, not merely afterward, will never be shipwrecked. Even in difficult circumstances, a person will never be brought face to face with the danger of losing his soul, because this is a matter of salvation. Souls are being lost; there is no room for a halfway solution. Souls are being lost.

Christ makes no compromise. If Christ was consulted, and if Christ gave you your companion in life, then endure the temptation together as brother and sister in Christ. Christ knows, and He Himself will put the matter in order.

If He was not consulted, then difficulties follow. Most of us reach marriage with the general notion that, since we are young, we must marry so that we are not left on the shelf. Yet we do not consider the consequences, which then become an elaborate snare of Satan.

And if we now have ten degrees of sin, when we marry and continue in a sinful way of life—not the life of Christ that we confess—we multiply that sin to forty, to eighty, until it becomes one hundred percent.

That is why everyone must take great care. Next, I would like to explain the purpose of marriage. Holy Scripture tells us that the purpose of marriage is the bearing of children. That is the purpose of marriage.

Now, the proof from Scripture. «Increase and multiply, and have dominion over the earth.» Genesis 1:28. And a patristic testimony, from Gregory the Nazianzen: «Marriage is good, when the desire for children follows after it.» If that intention isn't there, the intention of bearing children, then, Gregory says, the marriage is not a good one.

And Justin, the Martyr and Philosopher, says: "The purpose of marriage is the raising of children." That is the purpose — we are going to raise children; we ourselves are only sojourners, strangers passing through this earth. And if that is not the purpose, he says, then it is better not to marry at all. The perfect way is this: we live in continence, in self-restraint. It would be far better, he says, for us to keep ourselves continent.

He also says that unrestricted sexual union is not right. Sexual union outside marriage does not belong to the Mystery. In other words, unrestricted union without marriage is not a Mystery; it is fornication. This is what he says concerning the purpose of marriage.

Amphilochios then says the following:

“For the continuation of the human race, so that one generation may succeed another and human nature may increase, the law of marriage was given. God placed desire in man, drawing him toward woman, and also made woman receptive—not so that they might be aroused toward an unlawful union, but so that they might lawfully be joined in marriage.”

This is why there is this inclination, this attraction between the two persons, between the two sexes. And so union within the institution of marriage is honourable in God's sight; but union for the sake of pleasure is subject to death. When marriage is shifted over to the question of pleasure alone, and not to the bearing of children, then it brings death, he says.

Therefore, when this is the purpose but it is ruled out because of circumstances imposed from outside—a very small wage and so many other difficulties—then, I say again, one must seek the Creator and put the question to Him: “Why, Lord, am I suffering this? How has this happened?” The answer will be: “You did not ask Me.”

“If you had asked Me, I could have found another way to make this easier for you.” But afterward, we weak human beings, guided by seemingly reasonable arguments—poverty, insufficient income, unsuitable age, lack of help, and so forth—feel compelled not to have children.

We limit childbearing so that we may manage. For once one evil has been admitted, countless others follow. These are the consequences that arise when we try to remedy something we did hastily, without reflection and without first asking Christ.

That is the reason. And then we begin trying to avoid having children. According to the Old Testament, the person who avoids procreation was to be stoned. For, as we have said, the purpose of marriage is procreation: to bring human beings into existence.

The man who avoids letting his seed be quickened and brought to life stands in the position of Onan. As we read in Genesis, chapter 38, verse 9, the first man who refused to allow his wife to conceive was Onan.

That is why this is also called onanism. When he did this, the act appeared so cruel, so contrary to God’s will, and so dishonorable in the eyes of God that God gave the command and put him to death. Spiritually, the same fate awaits everyone who acts in this way.

Thus, either we avoid procreation, or, if conception takes place, we proceed to the premeditated destruction of the child within the womb.

We will have what is called abortion; in plain words, the deliberate termination of the child’s life. Do you understand? And even when some bring the child into the world, we see some throw it out onto the streets. Others leave it outside in the freezing cold on a winter night to die. Some drown it in water, while others devise various ways to get rid of it. These are things that do not happen even among wild beasts. Wild beasts do not do such things.

People do not even show natural compassion toward the children of their own womb whom they bring into the world. I know of cases such as a mother who left the fruit of her womb outside in the snow during winter, and the child froze to death.

She did this so that the child would die, because she did not want it. Other parents leave a child without food—for example, because it is a girl and they wanted a boy—and the child dies of starvation. If a person could hear of all the things that God sees being done from above, he would shudder.

He would wonder how God still tolerates us, how He endures peoples who are unbelieving, of little faith, or cold in faith. It is astonishing that Christ still receives us. Many people have asked me this question: At the very moment of conception, is it already a living organism, a human existence? Yes, it is. If you remember, in a book I wrote, Even the Tenth, I recount a conversation I had with a very spiritually advanced elder.

Someone said to me, “Yes, I have had abortions, but the child had not yet become a human being.” Yet from the moment conception occurs, life is present there, and an account will have to be given for it. This is the profound meaning of the commandment God has given to the physician:

The way that, at the very moment the sperm meets the ovum, life comes to be — that is God's commandment, a law that has been laid down: when these two are joined, life comes into being at once. The Holy Spirit forms it, as it is written in the twelfth chapter of Zechariah, in the Old Testament, verse 1, that the Spirit forms in the womb of the human being — that is, of the woman — it forms the soul. It is God's commandment, and man immediately strikes out against that existence.

It is a human existence, regardless of whether hands, feet, ears, and the rest have yet appeared. Abortion deliberately kills, through the cooperation of the mother, the father, and the physician, a human being unable to defend itself. Yet from within it cries out “with groanings which cannot be uttered,” as Paul says, and it says to the mother: “Mother, why are you killing me? Father, why are you putting me to death? Doctor, why are you destroying me? I am defenseless; I cannot cry aloud or resist. He who avenges the blood of the innocent will also avenge my blood tomorrow.”

Do you remember a case I spoke about a few days ago at Saint Marina's? A mother who had had three or four abortions. And during her last abortion, while she was lying there in the clinic, she saw four little children climbing up at the windowpanes. And she says, as if shooing them away, "What are these?" And they cry out, "Why are you driving us away, Mother? We are the children from the abortions." Does it seem strange to you, hearing things like this?

And do you know what she says in her account?

According to Miniatis, even if the parents repent and are saved, on that day all the children who were killed in their mothers’ wombs, and so on, will cry out before God. Through Christ they will seek justice from their parents, saying, “Why did you not allow us to come into being, to be baptized, and to enter Paradise too?” Of course, people become angry when they hear this; their expressions change.

Yes, that much is true, but on the day of judgment these little creatures who are destroyed will demand an accounting. Why do we deceive ourselves, my dear lady? These are truths of the Gospel. And what am I saying? I myself am the first of sinners. I only wanted people to hear these things and put them into practice.

Do you think the speaker is always a saint? Christ has spoken clearly, so do not be scandalized: “Whatever they tell you, do and observe; but do not act according to their works, for they say and do not do.” That is what He says in Matthew 23:3. These words must be taken seriously. A person must gather himself together and begin to consider his responsibilities. Now, as I told you, there are objections that seem reasonable and justified. But once we admit that Christ was not consulted, we are immediately left without a defense. Could this whole situation, all this adversity and misery, be the result of the fact that I did not ask Him? That may indeed be the case.

In any event, no objection can stand before Christ. For the Christian couple, the faithful couple who consulted Christ and whose union Christ Himself brought about, there can be no objection.

For all the rest of us, who entered into married life in various other ways, objections arise that appear plausible. Yet in the eyes of Christ, none of them stands. Let me continue. Someone says there is illness. If such an illness already exists, it precludes marriage.

Many people have entered marriage despite an illness. They cannot then prevent the conception of children afterward; that is not permitted. Why did you marry? You should not have done so. Consequently, you bear the responsibility, not God.

"But I got sick afterwards. I came down with a venereal disease after the wedding." Very well — and who is responsible for that, Christ or you? You are the one who lived a dissolute life, and that is how you ended up with this later on. So whether you did it before the marriage or after it, you are the one responsible; Christ is not.

What is to be done now?

You will bear your cross. You will now exercise self-restraint and bear your cross. That is how it is; there is no other solution. You will bear the cross you fashioned with your own hands. And if it is heavy, it is because you fashioned it with your own hands.

Otherwise, Christ does not give a temptation or a cross beyond a person’s strength. Then there is another objection: “The money is not enough.” Either there is none at all or it does not suffice. We must keep the following in mind.

Christ says of man that He gave even His own blood for him, that He gave His very self. If for the birds, for whom He gave nothing, if for the animals, for all of them, He still feeds them and keeps them alive, as He says in the sixth chapter of Luke and of Matthew, "Look at the birds of the sky, look at the lilies" — He sets everything in order for them — then for man, for whom He poured out His own blood, will He not find a way? Will He not arrange something, will His providence not make some provision for man?

He says clearly, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” But you say, “Lord, come now—I do not believe You. I want pencil and paper. The child will need this much for food, this much for one thing and this much for another.”

“This much for a nanny, this much for foreign-language lessons, this much for education, and so on.” You subtract it all from what you have, and the figures do not add up; nothing can be done. This is how a person calculates.

How much for foreign languages, how much, how much, how much — and it doesn't add up, he says. And here's the striking thing: there was one man who never became a parent at all; he stayed a husband and nothing more — a man who had worked out a calculation like that in view of a child being born. And to this day, ten years on, he still hasn't managed it.

His budget was left there on paper, and that was all. This is why God punishes. God punishes. To show a person that they aren't worth a penny. Not a penny. Not one penny. And He leaves him sitting there with his accounts: how much the child's food would cost him, how much the nanny, how much the schooling, how much the foreign-language lessons. The budget was left there on paper, and nothing more.

For ten years he has been unable to have a child. He has remained childless, and one day his soul will depart. For surely he wanted a beloved son to carry on his name. God did not give him even this beloved son.

God helps each person in the way that is appropriate for him. This is not exactly punishment; in a certain sense, it is spiritual correction, so that he may understand and say, “My God, I place myself in Your hands; You take care of everything else.” But no—he took out his pencil and paper, and God left the calculations written there.

God did not grant him what he wanted in this matter.

The Christian, the Christian couple, knows that God cares for the birds, cares for the snakes, cares for the fish, and cares for the young ravens.

The Psalmist writes in Psalm 146, verse 9, that God provides food for the young ravens. For when the raven hatches its young, it abandons them; it is even said to hate its offspring. That is why God compelled the raven to carry bread and meat to Elijah.

For it does not even go near them. Job also says, in chapter 38, verse 41, that the God who provides food for the cattle and grass upon the mountains also provides for the young ravens. When their mothers and fathers abandon them, He sends flies and worms to them upon the rocks, so that the young ravens may be fed.

Think about it: will He abandon the children of Christians? He does not abandon them, He does not abandon them — but we pay no attention to this. Our care must be laid upon Christ. What does Peter write? Peter says: "Cast all your care upon Him" — First Peter 5:7.

For He cares for us; He is the one who will take it upon Himself. David, in Psalm 54, verse 23, says: "Cast your care upon the Lord, and He will sustain you." And in Psalm 36, verse 5, he says: "Reveal your way to the Lord, and hope in Him, and He will bring it to pass." He is the one who will see it through. Don't come telling me strange things, when I have nothing.

The problem is that the married couple does not see God. That is why they see only the difficulties before them. If they saw God, everything would be put in order. I remember the widowed mother who was left with four or five children, whom we read about in the account of the Prophet Elisha, in 4 Kingdoms 4:1. Do you remember what happened?

The poor woman went to Elisha—a widow burdened with the debts left by her husband and with children to care for—and said, “Your servant, my husband, feared God, but he left us in debt. Now the man to whom we owe the money is coming to take me and my children.”

In those days people were sold as slaves to pay off a debt. "Have mercy on me." "What can I do for you? Do you have anything in the house?" She says, "I have nothing. Nothing at all. All I have," she says, "is one little jar, and there's a little oil left in it."

“A little oil, just a little oil. Have your children go around the neighborhood and collect as many empty tins as they can.” “What are they to do with them?” “Go into your house, shut the door, take that oil, and begin pouring it into the tins. As each one fills, set it aside.” So they went and gathered as many tins as they could from the neighborhood. She began pouring from the little vessel. Each tin filled, and she set it aside. She filled every container. “Is there another one?” “No, there are no more.” Then the oil stopped flowing. So she ran to Elisha and said, “Elder, this is what happened.” “Go and sell the oil,” he told her, “and pay the man what you owe him.”

“Pay what you owe, and keep the rest so that you and your children may live on it.” Elisha died; yes, Elisha died. But did the God of Elisha die? No, the God of Elisha did not die. I myself witnessed this very miracle in the life of one of my relatives, an aunt of mine.

She was a widow with six children, and when her son came down from Athens to the village, to Aigion, she didn't even have what she needed to fry him an egg. She went and took the oil tin, and there was nothing in it at all. He was about to leave; he had gone forty-eight hours without a bite of food.

She had nothing at all — literally nothing. Bread was still being handed out on ration cards, and there wasn't even bread to be had. And that tin of oil — how many times had she wrung it dry? Hadn't she turned it upside down fifty times? She took a bottle that she had already drained, and drained again, and she went back once more to the container: a black bottle with a black neck, one of the old three-hundred-dram size, about a liter. And with tears running down her face she sets it underneath, and then she tilts the tin over it, and the bottle fills up.

No oil remained in the tin, and none spilled outside; there was exactly enough to fill the bottle. She fainted there, and they later found her lying on the floor unconscious, with the bottle tilted but without its contents having spilled. After a miracle like that, the Lord lives—God lives! But for those without faith, or with little faith, the Lord does not live.

We are the ones who lack trust. Ask married couples who have large families dedicated into the hands of God; they can tell you of many miracles. They can tell you of many occasions when great difficulties overtook them, and at the very last moment some man or woman appeared to help.

There was always some relief, some oasis within that desert, even when everything around them seemed scorched. Satan would say to them, “Why do you want all these children? You cannot manage anymore. Do you not see what the world does today? Why do you not wake up?” Yet it is the others who are asleep. The one who is awake is the person who directs his life along the way of Christ.

It seems strange, strange to a person. How can you live on nothing? Have you never read the Book of Job, brother? Well, have you ever read the Book of Job? I am talking about fifty-two drachmas. He did not have even fifty-two drachmas a day; all he had was a potsherd and leprosy.

Leprosy! And yet, when Job’s latter days were blessed, though his only possessions were a potsherd and his leprosy—and with a wicked wife standing over him, telling him to blaspheme God and die—he acquired twice as much wealth and had seven sons and three daughters: ten whole children, though he had begun with absolutely nothing. He had possessed these things before and had been exceedingly rich, but everything was destroyed; he lost everything, including his children.

He was left with nothing but a potsherd. Why did his life change? Because Christ blessed him. And what did Job say when he beheld this miracle? In chapter 42 he says, “Until now I had heard of You, but now I see You. I had heard of You, O God, but now my eyes behold You.” When a person sees God within his home and in all that happens to him—sheltering him, watching over him, and feeding him—then no one can ever drive him away from God.

Tell me, was not the widow of Zarephath at the point of death when God sent Elijah, who blessed her little jar of oil and her handful of flour? Three and a half years of drought passed. Great men died, rich men died, people died of hunger; yet the poor widow of Zarephath, who trusted in God, did not die, nor did her child or anyone in her household.

How, then, can I say that Christ has nothing to give? Christ has everything. It is I who have no vessel into which Christ can pour. That is the crucial point. The Old Testament tells us that Christ, who is God, helps mankind.

People don't pay attention to this, we don't read it, and so we get frightened at that point. We sit down with a pencil and paper and work out the figures, and it's true, we come to some very sad conclusions. How many times does this happen to people with families to raise: the electricity bill comes, it stings us, and we say, 'How on earth are we going to pay this?' And then: 'Here you are, ma'am, take this hundred, use it for the little one.' A way is found, all the same. And the person who is willing to receive God's mercy says at once: 'Glory be to God! God has not died. He is here.'

Then you see someone else coming from another direction: “Take these two hundred-drachma notes. Someone gave them to me; give them wherever you think best”—and they turn out to be for that very person. There are thousands of such occasions when help is given. A faithful person, a faithful married couple, does not bring children into the world merely for the sake of the world.

...the world. They bring children into the world for God, and that is why they are not afraid to have children. Even if they go barefoot, even if they lack clothing, even if they go hungry, even if they are not fed as well as pampered children or the children of unbelievers, even if they are not well fed. For they have children for God, not for other people. Those who have children for the sake of other people will always find themselves facing such difficulties. Or, as it says in the Old Testament, in Proverbs 22:2: “The rich...”

«The rich and the poor meet together; and the Lord made them both.» Yes — just as the rich man will have to give an account for his wealth, so the poor man will have to give an account for whatever was entrusted to him. If we look into it, beloved, we will see that the people who are afraid of having children are, for the most part, themselves the children of large families. If you ask that very man how many children there were in his own home, he will tell you six, seven, eight, five, ten. It took nothing away from them. Many of you here are working people, wage earners with many children. Which of those children came to nothing? Not one. The children of devout parents, and the children who have godliness within them, did not come to nothing.

We venerate Saint Nektarios of Aegina. What was Saint Nektarios of Aegina, and how did he become the saint he is? He was poor—he did not have so much as a splinter to pick his teeth with, let alone bread left between them. He knelt down and prayed. Then he boarded the ship bound for Chios.

Did he have the fare? He was setting out into the unknown. But on the ship there happened to be a rich man. “The rich and the poor—the Lord made them both.” God brings them together, and the man pays for the child’s ticket. When he hears the child’s story, he also undertakes to pay for his education.

And today he is Saint Nektarios of Aegina.

I'm not going to tell you fairy tales — that's all far away. We all know the Bishop of Arkadia, who was formerly Father Timotheos Papoutsakis, of the 'Fullness of Christ,' and who spoke here last Sunday. Now, read his book, 'In Obedience to Christ.'

Read The Novice of Christ — the story of a young man under obedience to Christ — and see what he went through, what kind of family he came from, and who he is today. When he went off to sleep with his little bundle, driven out as he was, down here by a coffee house, he found himself in a little chapel above Ilioupoli. Not Ilioupoli as it is now, part of Athens; back then it was deserted up there, where there is a little chapel of the Prophet Elijah. He went in with his little bundle and his rag blanket, in his short trousers, sleepless and with nothing to eat, to sleep inside that little chapel, without even knowing whose chapel it was. And as he lay down there, frightened and worn out, disheartened at being abandoned by everyone, in the light sleep that came over him the aged Prophet Elijah appeared to him and said, 'My child, do not be afraid. God has ravens, just as He had them for me, and He will help you.' And he was completely at a loss. 'Who is this, with the ravens?' Did he have any idea who this was, my child? He starts to drift off again. And in a moment, there is the aged Prophet Elijah once more: 'My child, do not be afraid.'

“Do not be afraid. God has His ravens, and He will send them to help you, just as He helped us.” He awoke with a start. How could he sleep after that? He waited for daybreak so that he could go out. He washed with a little water and went in to venerate the icons before leaving.

As soon as he went in, he saw the elder, the Prophet Elijah, exactly as he had appeared to him in his sleep. He took courage and went down. Later, here in the city, God placed the right man in his path; he found work as a bus conductor. And today he is the bishop of Arkadia, one of the few bishops capable of teaching others and guiding them as well.

So we cannot keep saying, “How will I educate the child? How will I raise him? How will I manage?” When God sees faith, matters will be resolved and help will come. Each of us has both small and great examples of this in his life; that is why we should encourage one another. But woe because of those mothers-in-law and mothers—those cruel women—who speak to their daughters-in-law and discourage them, saying, “How will they manage?” And yet these very women themselves had five, six, seven, eight, or ten children.

One day, as I was leaving the Church of the Ascension, I heard an elderly woman, already practically in the grave, speaking to another woman. She was saying, “I told her not to have another child. What would the next one eat?” My blood began to boil, and I went and stood directly in front of her.

“What did you say?” I asked her. “Who are you to put a stop to creation? Who are you? What answer will you give tomorrow to Christ and to the Most Holy Theotokos, when you are the one telling your daughter-in-law to stop bringing children into the world? Why? So that her figure will not be spoiled, so that she will not be troubled or grieved, so that she will not have to spend money, and so forth?”

For this sorrowful thing that is taking place under the sun, beloved, is not found only among people of little means, where someone says, “I am a poor man. What can I do? The Cross is difficult.” It is found among the rich as well—people who could feed two hundred, five hundred, or a thousand children, yet have none at all.

I know in particular of a rich man who brought a doctor from America to kill the child in his wife’s womb here, because, he said, it was forbidden in America and one could face the electric chair for performing an abortion, and so forth.

And he brought the doctor over, he paid him, he flew him here on the plane, and his wife here too, and it happened at Selena — up there is where this destruction was done — and they killed the child, when the man had enough to feed not one or two people, but a thousand people, two million people, let's say. Don't think a thing like this belongs only to us poor folk. I say it and I lay it out this way so that each of us can find the cause. "Why," someone tells you, "if I had a house of my own, I wouldn't be paying rent." Why are you paying rent?

If you had been sensible, you would have made good use of your money, instead of being a poor manager of it — spending it on tickets, going off to the racetrack, or going out again and again to places of entertainment. How is it that in all these years you never put a little aside, so that you'd have something now? Someone will say, "I spent it on the household, I gave it away." Well, may that be blessed.

Then ask Christ to send you a woman who can have a little job, while you too can do some work, so that there may be some income. Ask Him about this; do not put your own will first. For the most part, as I have told you, these crosses become heavy for those of us who did not ask Christ.

That is why we end up in this predicament. I have no prescription of my own to give you, beloved brothers and sisters. Christ has the prescription. This matter is different for each person. What is right for me may not be right for someone else.

And something that suits one person may not suit someone else. Yet there is one thing that suits us all: we must all turn back to Christ. “I made a mess of things; I did not ask You, Christ. I confused everything, ran up debts, and now I call upon You to pay the bill.”

“I will undertake to pay it. Come, then, from this point onward—you and your wife. Metanoia and Holy Confession. Find a discerning spiritual father, and obey whatever he tells you.” And God is able to provide. There was a family with nine children.

They had stopped having children. Troubled by the thought of where this would lead, they went to the priest. “Do you believe in Christ?” he asked. “I believe.” “Then continue, and Christ will provide the solution. Do not stop it by your own hand.” They obeyed. And what was the result? Christ did not grant them another child.

Christ gave them no more children. They had obeyed. They were now open and free to have another child, yet they did not have one. He saw their weakness and their circumstances. He knew that they could not bear anything more.

And He preserved their souls, while they also remained in harmony with the Gospel. Where is such trust today? We think that the whole matter is governed by pencil and paper and by numbers. It is not so; it is not so.

I, who am speaking to you, am one of my mother’s twelve pregnancies. She had three miscarriages, three children died, and six lived. My wife is one of her mother’s thirteen children. Not one of them was lost. We did not exactly eat our fill, to tell the truth.

We did not have fifteen suits apiece and all the rest. We did not go on cruises. We did not have all the modern conveniences people have today. We were not dressed up in fancy clothes from the age of three, nor did we wear imitation watches from the age of two.

That is the truth. Yet we were not lost. Christ cares for the souls of human beings. If things are shaped according to this pattern, many situations will be dealt with. Some will remain unresolved because of our little faith.

Christ has the power to send people to help others.

You may remember that one day, when I was pressed to make a public confession of my circumstances, someone accused me. For six years now, I have been given lodging by a family and pay no rent.

I would have to pay rent, and paying rent would be a serious burden for me, because I have no means of support. And yet, You opened people’s hearts, and they welcomed me into their home, so I pay no rent. It has been more than five years now, going on six. That is no small thing. Such people are exceedingly rare. And even they were criticized. When a rich man opens his heart and gives from his wealth, he too is criticized. But why do you criticize him as well? There are many such cases. I know another soul, perhaps even among us tonight, who wants me to stay in her home. These people have one spare room, and their hearts open. And another soul stayed behind one evening after I had spoken and said to me, “My family and I are also giving someone a place to stay.” Has Christ not opened the hearts of countless people, in many different circumstances, toward those who are in a difficult situation? Many times, the problem is that we have not taken care to keep His commandments and assume responsibility for spiritual things, so that He may take responsibility for material things. That is where we stumble and where we confuse everything. So, if in conclusion you ask my opinion, it is this: whenever someone is in a situation that I am not capable of healing, but only Christ can, I tell him and remind him to find a discerning spiritual father, for both him and his wife to go to Holy Confession, and to do whatever the spiritual father tells them, because at that moment God will place in the spiritual father’s heart what he should say to them.

Thank you.

That is what will happen. O you of little faith, why did you doubt? He will see a series of miracles, and he will see that Christ is alive, that He is and always will be. And he will become a cause for His name to be glorified forever. I pray that Christ will make it possible.

May God bless all this. Amen.

Και συνεχίζω. Μήπως θέλει η Εκκλησία εις το ζήτημα αυτό να εφησυχάζει, διότι ενδιαφέρεται μόνο για τα πνευματικά, ενώ στα υλικά αγρόν αγοράζει, και έτσι βαδίζει με το ένα σκέλος και δεν μπορεί να την ακολουθήσει ο καθένας; Μήπως ξεχνάει πως ο άνθρωπος δεν έχει μόνο πνεύμα αλλά και σώμα και υποχρεώσεις, ενώ για τα πνευματικά κάνει τόσες προσπάθειες, δυστυχώς για τα υλικά ούτε καν ενδιαφέρεται, δηλαδή για την καλυτέρευση της ζωής;

Κυρίες ορισμένες έβαζαν εκ των υπαρχόντων των, όπως γράφει ο Λουκάς, και διηκόνουν, εξυπηρετούσαν όλη την κίνηση αυτή. Όταν ο Χριστός, λοιπόν, καταδέχεται και να διατηρείται, να κινείται και να υπάρχει από των υπαρχόντων ανθρώπων και δη κυριών, ποιοι είμαστε εμείς οι οποίοι δεν θα δεχτούμε την άκρα της φιλανθρωπίας;

Πρώτα-πρώτα, η υπόθεση είναι γύρω από ένα γάμο. Γιατί ο γάμος αυτός δεν μπορεί να έχει τα αποτελέσματά του και προβάλλονται λόγοι οικονομικοί; Πρώτα-πρώτα ας ερωτήσουμε: από πότε ο γάμος; Τι είναι αυτό που λέγεται γάμος; Το φτιάξαν άνθρωποι ή ο Θεός;

Ο Θεός το έφτιαξε αυτό το πράγμα ευθύς εξ αρχής και, κατά συνέπεια, είναι θεοσύστατος ο γάμος, είναι θεοσύστατος. Γι' αυτό και βάλλεται από τον διάβολο κάθε τι που είναι φτιαγμένο από τον Θεό. Τι πάει να πει γάμος; Τι πάει να πει; Ποιος είναι ο ορισμός του γάμου;

Διατί αποτυγχάνει ο γάμος, ενώ τον έφτιαξε ο Θεός; Γιατί; Ο Θεός τον έφτιαξε, γιατί να αποτυγχάνει;

Γιατί δεν μπορείς να τα βγάλεις πέρα; Με ρώτησες; Η γυναίκα που σου έδωσα ή ο άντρας που πήρες είναι με την ευλογία μου ή με κάλεσες με το ζόρι για να σε ευλογήσω;

Ήρθατε με ένα εμπόριο σε μια τέτοια κατάσταση που θέλει έξοδα, που θέλει φροντίδες, που θέλει αγώνα κλπ. Και εκ των υστέρων ζητάμε την ευθύνη. Εδώ λέγει: το υπελόγισες αυτό ή ξημέρωσε ένα πρωί και δεν μπορείς να τα βγάλεις πέρα;

Ενθυμείστε μια περίπτωση που έλεγα προ ημερών στην Αγία Μαρίνα; Μια μάνα που είχε κάνει τρεις-τέσσερις εκτρώσεις. Και στην τελευταία της έκτρωση, βρισκομένη στην κλινική, είδε στα τζάμια να ανεβαίνουν τέσσερα παιδάκια. Και λέει, σαν να τα διώχνει: «Τι είναι αυτά;» Φωνάζουν αυτά: «Τι μας διώχνεις, μάνα; Είμαστε παιδιά από τις εκτρώσεις». Σας φαίνεται παράξενο όταν ακούτε αυτά τα πράγματα;

Τι θα γίνει τώρα;

Ο Χριστός λέγει για τον άνθρωπο ότι έδωσε και αυτό το αίμα Του ακόμη, και αυτόν τον εαυτό Του. Αν για τα πουλιά, που δεν έδωσε τίποτα, αν για τα ζώα, για τα πάντα, τα τρέφει, τα διατηρεί, όπως αναφέρει στο έκτο κεφάλαιο του Λουκά και του Ματθαίου, «βλέπε τα πετεινά του ουρανού, βλέπε τα κρίνα», τα τακτοποιεί· για τον άνθρωπο που έδωσε το αίμα Του, δεν θα βρει έναν τρόπο, δεν θα οικονομήσει τίποτα για τον άνθρωπο;

Και τον έφερε τον γιατρό, τον πλήρωσε, τον έφερε εδώ με το αεροπλάνο, και τη γυναίκα του εδώ, και έγινε στη Σέλενα, σαπάνω εκεί έγινε η διαφθορά αυτή, και το σκοτώσανε το παιδί, ενώ είχε να θρέψει όχι έναν και δύο, αλλά χίλιους ανθρώπους, δύο εκατομμύρια ανθρώπους, να πούμε. Μην νομίζετε ότι είναι μόνο για εμάς τους φουκάραδες αυτό το πράγμα. Το λέγω και τοποθετώ έτσι, να βρει ο καθένας την αιτία. «Γιατί, να ’χα», σου λέει, «κι εγώ ένα σπίτι, δεν θα πλήρωνα νοίκι». Γιατί πληρώνεις νοίκι;
