Today we shall say a few words about the great virtue of nepsis, or watchfulness.
As you know, nepsis is a teaching of the Fathers. It is the lived experience of the great Fathers of the Church and of the Desert. The Neptic Fathers are the contemplatives of the ascetic life. Nepsis is like a pickaxe that brings down great trees by striking at the root; and once the root has been struck, the tree cannot grow again.
All the teachings and sermons of preachers are beneficial. But the word of the Fathers has a different character, and the benefit it brings is of another kind.
Nepsis means being sober and watchful: keeping guard, examining, observing, overseeing,
and keeping close watch. The Fathers sum it up as the unceasing attention of the nous, the spiritual intellect. When the nous of a Christian possesses this watchful attention, it guards the mind, the heart, and the five senses of the human person—both the bodily senses and the spiritual senses of the soul.
When the nous keeps watch, when it is attentive, when it guards the movements of thought and keeps the imagination—the imaginative faculty of the nous—under control, then the whole person, soul and body, remains pure. And when a person is purified through nepsis and spiritual labor, his prayers have boldness before God.
They pass through the air, rise beyond the stars, pass through the heavens, and draw near to the divine throne of grace, where they receive the blessings of God. And so the person who prays in this way becomes rich in the grace of God.
The neptic Fathers, the Fathers of watchfulness, tell us this: one thought lifts us up to heaven, and another brings us down to hell. Our thoughts are what make us better or make us vile.
That is, a single intrusive thought which carelessly gains entry can poison us, entice us with pleasure, and make us fit for Hell.
A godly thought, a thought of self-denial, a courageous thought, a thought of prayer and theoria—divine contemplation—causes us to be counted worthy to approach the divine throne and taste heavenly things. Through our logismoi we either become impure or become better.
The beginnings of all sins arise from logismoi. These intrusive thoughts enter through the five senses, both bodily and spiritual. If we leave the sense of sight uncontrolled, allowing it to look carelessly at whatever comes before it, this carelessness will produce a multitude of filthy and sinful images.
Once these images enter the imagination, they then drip the poison of sinful pleasure into the human heart. That pleasure is poison, and the heart is poisoned by it, and then the heart becomes unclean and guilty before the eyes of God.
What is true of sight is also true of touch, taste, hearing, and smell. In this way the five senses produce corresponding sinful images, which make a person impure before God.
Here lies the whole wisdom of the spiritual life. We have said that all sermons are beneficial.
They are beneficial in the way that a tree is pruned: branches are cut off, and the sinful tree—that is, a passion—is reduced in size. But when the pickaxe, when the axe, strikes the root, the whole tree falls, withers, and perishes.
In the same way, when nepsis—this axe given by the Fathers and by their teaching—is put into practice in the Christian life, each tree of enslavement to the passions falls and withers. Thus, in time, the person is freed from the passions and becomes a new person.
The old man, the earthly Adam, is the person of sin and enslavement to the passions.
This is why the work of nepsis frees us radically from evil. Here we must pay close attention to our life. If we want to purify ourselves, we must take care to enrich our nous with the attentiveness of nepsis.
Prayer is one part of nepsis. Noetic prayer—the prayer of the nous—is one part of nepsis. Theoria, the contemplation of God, is another part of nepsis.
Spiritual combat is another part of nepsis. When all these parts are united in a person’s struggle,
in time they bring holiness.
Abba Paphnutius, a great father of the desert, was walking along the road one day, and there he saw two people committing a sin. The thought that comes from passion said to him: "Look at the great evil these people are doing."
His eyes had seen them, and immediately the logismos caught fire, seeking to assault the purity of the Saint’s soul by tempting him to judge them or to be scandalized.
But because he possessed nepsis—watchfulness—he remained vigilant. The truth immediately enlightened him, and he said to his logismos: “They are sinning today, but I may sin tomorrow. They will repent, but I know that I myself am hard-hearted, unrepentant, and full of ego. Therefore, I may not repent, and I will be condemned to Hell.
So I am worse than these two people. What can I say about those whose sins are fewer, when I am a far greater sinner and far more enslaved to the passions?” By speaking in this way and raising a barrier against this temptation to sin, he was saved from it and did not judge the brothers who were sinning.
Before he had gone much farther, an angel of God appeared before him, holding a double-edged sword dripping with blood—that is, a sword that cut on both sides. The angel said to him, “Paphnutius, do you see this sword? Do you see it dripping with blood?” “I see it, angel of God.” “With this sword I strike down and behead those who judge their neighbor.
But you did not judge or condemn those who truly were sinning. They were not sinners merely in your imagination or suspicion; you saw them sinning with your own eyes, yet you did not judge them. Instead, you condemned yourself all the more. Therefore, your name has been written in the Book of eternal life.”
What a marvelous victory! His name was written in the Book of eternal life because he did not judge the sinners or condemn his brother’s sin. He would have condemned them if he had lacked nepsis, if he had not remained noetically watchful to guard his soul.
You see how many blessings were born from a single moment of attention, and what harm he would have suffered if he had been careless with his thinking and had allowed the thought to work within him. His reasoning told him that they truly were sinning, for he could see them. Yet even though ordinary reasoning assured him that this was indeed what was happening,
the right logismos prevailed, and thus he escaped the shipwreck of his soul. Every passion has its own images, its own fantasies, and its own pleasures. Murder has one kind of image and one kind of pleasure.
Love of money has another kind of image and another kind of pleasure. Gluttony and all the other sinful passions have theirs as well. As we have said, all these pleasures are different poisons that bring death to the soul. We must understand that if we wish to cleanse the inside of the cup—the depths of the soul, our heart, the very center of the human person—we must struggle and remain attentive. We must be as watchful as possible, always with our finger on the trigger, ready to fire at the enemy the instant he appears.
As soon as an evil logismos—an intrusive thought—comes to us, we must reject it immediately. As soon as a filthy image appears, we must destroy it at once.
We must not allow its colors and form to grow more vivid, because then we will immediately find ourselves in difficulty. Very well: when evil is struck at its root, it cannot sprout and grow. When this struggle is carried out diligently, we will cleanse our soul, and thus we will stand pure and with boldness before God.
A pagan priest once asked some monks, “Does your God appear to you? Do you see Him? Does He speak to you?” The Fathers said no.
“Since He neither speaks to you nor appears to you, it seems that you do not have pure logismoi.”
“When I pray,” he said, “my god answers me.” Of course, it was not God who answered the pagan, but the demons. Nevertheless, the Fathers took this as an opportunity to be edified, and they acknowledged that impure logismoi prevent a person from entering into communion with the Divine.
Nepsis—watchfulness—does nothing other than cleanse the nous, the spiritual intellect, and the heart from everything impure. For this reason, with a little ascetic effort, nepsis brings forth the greatest spiritual fruits.
When we undertake ascesis but pay no attention to our thoughts, we accomplish nothing. John Chrysostom wrote many chapters on prayer and nepsis. Among other things, he says something exceedingly beautiful: “Prayer is the illumination of the soul and true knowledge of God.
It is the mediator between God and mankind, the physician of the passions, an antidote to disease, a remedy for every illness, the serenity of the soul, and a guide that leads us to Heaven. It does not circle around the earth, but journeys toward the very vault of the heavens.”
It rises above created things, passes noetically through the air, travels beyond it, and crosses the whole realm of the stars. It opens the gates of Heaven, passes beyond the angels, rises above the thrones and dominions, and goes beyond the cherubim. Having ascended above all created nature, it draws near to the unapproachable Holy Trinity.
There it worships the Godhead, and there it is counted worthy to converse with the Heavenly King.
Through prayer, the soul is lifted high into Heaven and embraces the Lord in an ineffable manner, just as an infant embraces its mother and cries aloud with tears. Longing to partake of the divine milk, it asks for what it needs and receives gifts surpassing all visible nature.
Prayer is our honored advocate. It fills the heart with joy, gives rest to the soul, and awakens within us the fear of punishment and of Hell, together with the longing for the Kingdom of Heaven. It teaches humility and gives us awareness of our sin.
In short, prayer adorns a person with every good thing. It is like an ornamented veil, woven with every virtue, that enfolds the soul. Prayer gave Hannah the gift of Samuel and raised him up as a prophet of the Lord.
Prayer also made Elijah a zealot for the Lord, and it brought down the heavenly fire upon his sacrifice. While the priests of Baal called upon their idol all day long, Elijah raised the voice that came from his pure heart and cried out with both mouth and soul. Then he brought fire down from Heaven as proof that his prayer was righteous.
Standing like an eagle over the altar, with all the fervor of his nature, he offered everything as a sacrifice. This is what Elijah, the great servant of God and His zealot, did in order to instruct us through those events in spiritual realities, so that we too may cry aloud to God from the depths of our souls.
May we call upon the ineffable fire of the Holy Spirit to descend upon the altar of our hearts, and may we offer ourselves completely as a sacrifice to God. All the great Fathers of the Church, especially the Desert Fathers, were counted worthy of great spiritual gifts. They attained them solely and entirely through nepsis (watchfulness) and theoria, divine contemplation.
They kept watch throughout the night and entered into theoria, the vision of the Divine Light. We have Saint Gregory Palamas, the teacher of the desert, the teacher of neptic spiritual labor, and the master of noetic prayer. Saint Gregory would shut himself alone in his cell for the entire week and would not go outside at all.
There, on his knees with his hands lifted up, he kept watch with his mind and his heart. And he received theology from above — the knowledge of God himself — through the Holy Spirit. That theology brought him to know the uncreated light of the divine glory, the glory of the divine nature.
The uncreated light is the glory of the divine nature. This was the culmination and goal of their ascesis and prayer. When they received this light, they became entirely light. And since the light overwhelmed the nous and the heart,
what else could they come to know but the ineffable Mysteries, known only to the angels?
Through nepsis, the Fathers reached the highest virtues and gifts of grace. And if we also practice nepsis and remain attentive, even though we live in the world, then even if we do not reach such states, we will certainly attain some measure of purity.
When, through nepsis, we are counted worthy not to judge our brother, that is no small achievement.
We are fulfilling the commandment of Christ, which says: “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you judge, you shall be judged; and with the measure you use, it shall be measured back to you.” This is a commandment of Christ. It is not the commandment of some Saint. It is the commandment of God Himself.
Therefore, we are putting a divine commandment into practice. And when we do not judge, we will not be judged.
If we judge, we will be condemned. Sin lies openly all around us. Wherever we turn our eyes and imagination, we will become aware of other people’s faults. Therefore, if we are careless and without nepsis, we will continually fall into the transgression of this Gospel virtue toward our fellow human beings.
We judge our neighbor.
There was once a monk in a certain monastery. Temptation had overcome him and led him into negligence.
He did not keep his canon, his rule of prayer; he did not go down to the Church; and he did not offer the appointed prayers. The Fathers knew this and regarded him as negligent.
Negligent. The hour of his death arrived, and the fathers came near to see something, to be edified by whatever God might reveal. And as this monk, the Negligent One, drew near to death, the fathers saw that he was exceedingly joyful. They were amazed, and they said within their thoughts: but why should this man be at peace?
The negligence he had shown in his monastic life did not trouble him. What would become of the debts that had piled up through his spiritual sloth?
His conscience did not rebel against him or make him anxious, nor did he despair. He continued to be cheerful.
In their perplexity, they felt compelled to ask him, “Forgive us, brother, but we see that you are in this condition.
We know — and we have known all along — that you were negligent and slothful in your monastic duties. Now that you are on your way to the judgment seat of Christ, you ought to be somewhat sorrowful, uneasy, and so on, but we see you quite otherwise: joyful and the like, full of hope. And we are puzzled: what is all this state of yours resting on?
He answered them, “You are right, my fathers. It is just as you say. I was negligent and did not do what you did. But I guarded one thing throughout my life: I did not judge my brother.
I read in the Holy Gospel that the Lord says whoever does not judge will not be judged. So I tried to be watchful. Since I was negligent in other things, I resolved at least not to judge anyone; and I hope in God’s compassion that I will not be judged.
That is why I depart with faith that Christ will fulfill His word.”
The fathers looked at one another and said that the brother had indeed attained his salvation very wisely and skillfully.
Salvation. If we practice nepsis, watchfulness, we will not condemn others. Because the moment the assault of condemnation comes, watchfulness will immediately throw up a barrier and stop the logismos, the intrusive thought of condemnation, from going any further. And it will say what that brother said to Abba Paphnutius. And so he will escape the sin of judging, and his name will be written in eternal life, as a man who guarded his tongue.
He had cleansed both the inward and the outward: inwardly, the logismos—the intrusive thought—of judging, and outwardly, condemnation spoken by the tongue. Because this man had knowingly done this before God and had put it into practice, it was an assurance that he was saved.
This spiritual attentiveness becomes light, and like a lamp it illuminates the way. One path illuminated by nepsis, or watchfulness, is the path to Holy Confession. Attentiveness lights that path and tells a person that he must settle his account with God.
Through this illumination he is led to this great Mystery. There he leaves behind the whole debt and all the uncleanness of his sins. He lays it all down there, enters this bath, and comes out completely clean. And I say that we should have great joy in our souls whenever we are counted worthy to enter this bath.
We should rejoice and thank the Lord for leaving this bath upon the earth. He left us this authority to bind and to loose. Whatever the spiritual father looses, God also looses. Whatever God’s representative forgives, the Lord also forgives.
When a person is judged here below, he is not judged above at the great and dread tribunal. What a great opportunity and blessing it is if a person reaches that point. Therefore, those of you who have been counted worthy to receive this cleansing, and who continually wash away every stain upon the soul in this spiritual bath of the divine Mystery, should rejoice.
In all this you ought to feel very great joy, because the door of Paradise will always be open, and if death should come, there is not one worry, not one moment of turmoil. When a person is ready, they are not disturbed as death draws near. Readiness can never be a mistake.
The Word of God gave this authority. We know it as a Mystery of the Church, and we see it in practice and in its effects. When a person makes his Holy Confession with longing, humility, and awareness, he feels happiness within his soul, together with relief and gladness.
This is clear proof that his sins have been forgiven. And when his sins have been forgiven, every fear, anxiety, and uncertainty about the life to come is taken away.
Our thanksgiving to God should never stop. Let our thanksgiving never cease, that we are counted worthy, as often as we wish it, to receive this cleansing. And the moment I feel that I have sinned, I turn my mind at once to God: «I have sinned, Lord, forgive me; I have sinned, Lord, forgive me.» And God answers: «My child, you are forgiven; by the power of the law you are forgiven. Now be led on to the carrying out of that law.» And that leading happens under the priest's stole, the epitrachelion, in confession.
There all a person’s sinfulness comes to an end. Forgiveness is so easy and so completely free. It is therefore a terrible injustice for a person, out of pride, to refuse to receive it when it is offered so freely and easily.
He refuses to let the gate of Paradise be opened to him so that he may walk eternally in the glory of God.
Some people say, “For God to condemn a person because of a sin—is that not unjust? Where is God’s love? Is God not a Father?” Yes, of course He is a Father. But when He calls you at every moment to come and receive forgiveness, why do you turn your back on Him?
Why do you not accept His mercy? Why do you refuse His embrace and run far away? Why do you accept the embrace of the devil rather than the embrace of God?
Does God ask you for money, property, or some service that you cannot provide, and is that why you do not come to Him to settle your debt? No. God is infinitely rich, as we also see in the parable of the Prodigal Son.
The Prodigal Son wanted to go far away, so he asked for the share of the inheritance that belonged to him. And God gave him everything that was due to him, in the form of his natural gifts,
and withheld nothing from him. But the son squandered those gifts, that spiritual inheritance, by living recklessly. When he had fallen into utter degradation, he came to his senses; he came to himself, as though he had not been himself while committing all that reckless sin.
And when he came to himself he said: "How many, how many of my father's servants enjoy the good things of his estate, while I, his child, his own child above all, am living in such misery, feeding pigs and living on carob pods? Let me go back."
He is my father; he will receive me. I will ask his forgiveness. I will tell him not to receive me as his child or restore me to my former sonship, but I will ask to become one of his servants. Even that would be a very great thing.”
While he was still thinking these things, his father had already come out of the house and was waiting for him with open arms. He received him with all his heart and soul. He embraced him, kissed him, and wept for joy, because he had been dead and was alive again; he had been lost and was found.
He made him his child again and restored all his riches. He forgave everything and cleansed him from every defilement. He clothed him in the first robe and, in the end, gave him everything. This is what the Heavenly Father also does when a sinful person returns to Him.
He cleanses him, washes him, and gives him back the first robe of Baptism.
He grants him sonship and counts him worthy of His Kingdom—all freely given. When the Prodigal Son returned, his father did not demand an accounting from him,
nor did he rebuke him or call him to account. It was enough that he had returned; that alone was sufficient for the Father. So it is here as well: when any sinner returns, the Heavenly Father asks for no explanation. The sinner need only say, “I have sinned,” lay down his sins with humility, and recognize his error.
From that point on, everything is resolved. Yet the sinful person does not do this. He does not return or humble himself, but clings to his pride. What great effort does it take to reach the place of confession? It is only two steps away.
From that point on, it is all finished, all resolved — and yet his egotism keeps him far away. Sadly, if a person holds on to his pride, he will come to the hour of death, he will see reality as it is, he will repent, he will be filled with regret — but by then it may be too late. This is why God punishes a person: because he will not humble his thinking even a little. Lucifer, the morning star —
Consider that great angelic order, which once held the first place among the ranks of angels. What caused its destruction and collapse, its transformation from angels into demons? Pride—the deadly sin—and egotism.
This caused the fall of so many angels, and also of our first ancestors. The Fall of our first ancestors likewise came through pride and egotism. God had told them, “Keep this commandment. Eat whatever you wish, but do not eat from this one tree, because from the moment you eat of it, you will die spiritually.”
There they were deceived; they ate and died. But before God pronounced the sentence of condemnation, He approached the man and said to Adam, “Adam, why did you do this?” Adam did not ask forgiveness. He did not say, “I have sinned, my God; I was wrong.”
If he had done that, he would not have been driven out of Paradise. And we ourselves would never have had to go through all this exile and all the hardship we live with today. Because he would not say "I have sinned," this whole swarm of evils came upon us.
It is the same today: a person does not say, “I have sinned,” and so remains in his evils. The moment he says, “I have sinned,” God opens His forgiving arms and receives him into His embrace. And I say again: since we have been counted worthy, as Orthodox Christians, to know this Mystery of Holy Confession, we should have exceedingly great joy,
because whenever we suffer some fall into sin, whenever something evil happens to us, we can run at once to put it right, and so we will keep our soul in health. And when death comes, we will walk in health to meet Christ; and as people who have been cleansed, as people who have repented, as prodigals who have come back home, our Heavenly Father will receive us and set us in the Paradise of happiness — that eternal happiness which will have no end, which will never come to a close.
That blessedness cannot be compared with anything. When the Apostle Paul was caught up to the third heaven and saw the eternal good things, even he, with his apostolic tongue filled with grace, could not express in human words the realities of Paradise and the life above.
So great and unimaginable is the blessedness attained through Holy Confession. Therefore, with deep longing, great love, and full awareness, let us hasten to be cleansed and prepared. Let us remain ready so that, when death comes, we may depart in peace.

τι άλλο θα μπορούσαν να γνωρίσουν πλην των μυστηρίων των απορρήτων και μόνο γνωστών εις τους Αγγέλους;
Αμελή. Έφτασε η ώρα του θανάτου και οι πατέρες τον επλησίασαν να δουν κάτι, να ωφεληθούν που ίσως ο Θεός να έδειχνε, και πλησιάζοντας τον θάνατον αυτός ο μοναχός, ο Αμελής, τον είδαν οι πατέρες να είναι πάρα πολύ χαρούμενος. Απόρησαν και είπανε με τη σκέψη τους: μα γιατί να είναι ειρηνικός αυτός;
Η αμέλεια που είχε στη ζωή του τη μοναχική δεν τον ανησυχούσε· τα χρέη που επισωρεύθησαν με τη ραθυμία, τι γίνονται;
εξέβρομαι και εξέβρισσα ότι υπήρξες αμιλής και ράθυμος στα μοναχικά σου καθήκοντα Τώρα που πορεύεσαι προς το δικαστήριο του Χριστού, θα έπρεπε να είσαι κάπως λυπημένος, ανήσυχος κλπ., αλλά σε βλέπουμε διαφορετικά χαρούμενο και λοιπά με ελπίδα Και απορούμε: πού στηρίζεται όλη αυτή η κατάστασή σου;
Μερικοί άνθρωποι λέγουν ότι για ένα αμάρτημα τώρα να κολάζει ο Θεός τον άνθρωπο, μα είναι αδικία αυτό το πράγμα. Πού είναι η αγάπη του Θεού; Δεν είναι Πατέρας ο Θεός; Ναι, Πατέρας είναι, βέβαια. Μα όταν σε καλεί ανά πάσα στιγμή να έρθεις, να σε συγχωρέσει, εσύ γιατί γυρίζεις τις πλάτες σου;
Γιατί δεν δέχεσαι την ελεημοσύνη Του, γιατί αρνείσαι την αγκαλιά Του και φεύγεις μακριά; Γιατί δέχεσαι την αγκαλιά του διαβόλου και όχι του Θεού;
