Summary

Beginning from Psalm 90:7, Dimitrios Panagopoulos distinguishes left-hand temptations, deceptive right-hand thoughts, and judgments tested by Scripture, the Fathers, and the Church. A lie enclosed within many truths can disguise superstition as piety: New Year’s first-footing, taboos about passing objects, funeral customs, chain letters, and ill-timed devotions during worship all construct a private religion. He likewise questions remarriage justified as protection for orphaned children, citing Chrysostom on the strife that may follow, and refers an inherited monastic vow to spiritual direction. Gambling—cards, racing, lotteries, casinos, even charitable games—begins with the plausible hope of gain but consumes money, time, health, and domestic peace.

Tonight our subject will be the continuation of what came before, and specifically what we read from Great Compline, from Psalm 90, verse 7: "A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand."

You remember that when we were together, we spoke about thoughts, the logismoi, and particularly about right-hand thoughts, and we said that there are three kinds of logismoi: those from the left, those from the right, and correct thoughts. The thoughts from the left are punished; they have ugly results.

The thoughts from the right also drag a person off in the very same way, only camouflaged, and they bring him down to the same end as the thoughts from the left, in a manner of speaking. The correct thoughts are the ones that, when tested against Scripture and generally against the mind of the Fathers and of the Church, are what save a person.

When Satan cannot topple a person from the left, as we said, he takes care to wrap himself in many doubled truths so that he can serve up one lie, as the divine Chrysostom says.

We have spoken on this subject for nearly four evenings, not in order to exhaust it, for the subject is inexhaustible. We simply touched on certain things that can serve as an occasion for each of us to examine ourselves and our own thinking, and to take care not to be swept away by right-hand thoughts.

It is impossible for the human intellect to grasp all the devices of Satan and all the thoughts behind people's falls from the right. I repeat, we have only given starting points. We spoke about married couples, we spoke about going to church, we spoke about many things.

This evening I will touch on a few more of these things, which again may be a help to some. I would like to dwell on what are called superstitions. Has superstition ever occupied your mind? What is superstition?

It is a right-hand thought that keeps a person not in right reason but in his own reasoning. In some other way he has found, in some other method he has invented, which he thinks is better than the one right faith, right reason, and right thinking lead him to.

Superstitions have been the cause of a great deal of human misery. You have seen how on New Year's Day houses stay shut up, because there is this thought: if so-and-so comes and knocks on the door, the year will not go well.

If so-and-so comes, or such-and-such a woman comes, then the year will go well. What is this? Is it from God? Is it from satan? It is a lovely example of a thought from the right — a temptation dressed up as something good. It keeps the person standing there at the shutters, checking, or looking through the peephole, to see who it is and how the year is going to turn out.

And he keeps him shut indoors all day, because he does not regard the person knocking at the door as the one who will bring good luck, and so he will not open the door on New Year’s Day. This is a logismos, an intrusive thought that comes from the right—that is, a seemingly good thought that deceives him into believing that if what he has in mind comes to pass, as Satan whispers in his ear, then blessing and happiness will come to the household. Do you want to preserve the friendship? Then you listen to the other person: never take the soap directly from someone else’s hands; let them put it down first.

So you see, love and peace end up depending on the olive-oil dregs, on the soap, on the kerosene, on things like that. Your relationships depend on them. This thing is not a commandment of God, it is not grace, it is not anything else at all.

See how you have this prepossession, this fixed idea, this thought that comes from the right — one that Satan has planted in your mind dressed up as something good — and then afterwards you draw your conclusion. So far as it depends on your own malice and on the Satan who nests inside you, he casts it on you by that same right-hand way, so that you won't notice it, so that you never come to the point of confessing and saying, 'I'm the one who is evil, I hold a grudge, and I can't put up with the other person's foolishness or weakness.' Instead, it's the soap's fault. The soap is to blame — not you.

The soap is to blame. Has this not happened to you as well? Who has ever gone and confessed that he holds this superstition? That this thought torments him? And that he makes friendship and love depend on whether he takes the soap from his neighbour's hand or does not take it?

There are a thousand and one other superstitions attached to religious occasions. There is a superstition with a right-hand thought behind it, if you like, so that death will not set foot in your house again.

At your home, you break the plate at the doorway and make sure none of it is brought inside. And it is not only laypeople who fall into this; clergy do as well—they too adopt such practices. Some turn the mirrors around in the house. Others do not serve anything sweet, thinking that Death might acquire a taste for sweetness and return. And there are other such things. Haven’t you ever found that no sweets are served? “We have just carried out the dead,” they say.

For a little while, he says, no sweets are served. The coffee is bitter, with no sugar. What is all this? These are thoughts from the right — temptations that come dressed up as piety — and they sweep a person along and torment them. They build a religion of the person's own making, and then they fall asleep on top of that religion. And the religion takes over the job of guiding them the right way.

This does not happen only in our relationships outside the Church. Even within the Church and within the Mysteries, this thought from the right has made its way in—a device of Satan, presented to a person as though it came from spiritual experience. And because the person is weak or inattentive, he swallows this bitter pill.

For example, the chanter calls out, the priest calls out, "Wisdom, let us attend," and you see someone off she goes, waving her little candle, straight ahead. I will go and light my candle at the Apostle reading, why, for the souls of the departed; that is what the thought says.

Now, at this very moment, for the sake of that delusion, the devil gets her up on her feet to go and light the candle during the Apostle reading, indifferent to the fact that he says "Wisdom," that he says "let us attend," that he says stand and listen. The Apostle is about to speak now, do not stir. No, the thought says she will go and light the candles during the Apostle. It is good, I have learned it is good. What good? What business does the Apostle reading have with the candles, and what business does the candle have there? What is the candle going to do, what part does the candle play in the church, that you light a little flame for your dead? The candle is a confession of faith.

If you hold the candle at the Resurrection, it signifies that you too have risen; if you hold it at Baptism, it signifies that you are being born anew; and if we place it upon the kollyva, it signifies that a soul will rise from here. You do not light a candle casually; it also expresses something. I have written about all this in my book, “In the Churches Bless God,” explaining what each thing means. So now I ask you: Why are you crossing the church and cutting diagonally through it? Even though the priest says, “Peace. Wisdom. Let us attend,” stand perfectly still.

Stand still right where you are, and you will hear. But they've no mind to listen. They say, “Let him talk; I'm off to the candles.” And if you ask them afterward what was said, they don't know a thing. Who is the Epistle read for? For the Apostle who wrote it? The Apostle already knows what it says. It's read for me and for you. And yet the thought in their head is this: “I'm going over there.”

These things have to be cleared out of the way, and right thinking has to take charge. Then again you hear: the church is for incense and for candles. If we do not light candles here and offer incense, then... Yes, but the good is not good if it is not done well.

Unless everything is done at its proper time and in its proper place, you cannot light candles whenever you please, burn incense whenever you please, or go and venerate the icons whenever you please. Who told you that you may venerate the iconostasis at any time, as though you had received a blessing to do so?

Who told you that you can go and light the candles right while the Six Psalms are being read? Who told you these things? You'll light yours too — but at the appointed time. You'll pay attention to where the service is, to what the Church is saying, and you'll take your place accordingly.

You will stand there perfectly still by the candle counter for an hour, until the Six Psalms are finished, and only then will you move and go to light your candle. But where are you going? Why would you go up to the iconostasis? Go to the candle stand in front, and then withdraw to one side and weep over your falls.

You have no business there. You will go and honour the icon in its place. Who is it that stirs you up and tells you that you are offering service, that this is good, that this is what God wants? Who is it? It is the other one; it is not Christ. Christ is the guide of good order. It is the other one. It is this thought that sweeps us along in so many things, without our being able to understand that we are offering our service to him, and not to the One for whom we suppose we are offering it.

Thank you. Have you noticed this? I ran into it again just the other day, out in the provinces, somewhere I'd gone. There are women — and men too — who pass around little slips of paper, and they write: "Saint Anthony told me this." Now Saint Nektarios is writing as well. Lord, have mercy — and you too now, Saint Nektarios? And if you don't copy it out thirteen times, and if you don't send it on, and so forth — well, that's enough to keep a person awake for a week.

That is how much power superstition has; that is how much power this thought has. Your spiritual father can tell you on his own responsibility, I will take the sin upon myself, tear it up. And the answer is, I cannot tear it up. The thought holds you: what if, and how, and what about this. It takes strength. A Christian must have put things in order within, and must watch his thoughts. If this thought stands together with that measure, it is from God. If it does not stand, it is from the evil one, and he will throw it away.

You have to exercise discernment. As the Fathers say, there are thoughts that we ought to hold on to, and others that we ought to push away. Saint Nilus, for instance, says: «The mind never ceases giving birth to thoughts.» From all sorts of occasions and promptings, the mind keeps giving birth to thoughts.

But you, he says, pluck out the worthless ones, throw them away, cast them out; and cultivate the good ones, hold onto them, farm them so that they bear fruit for you. You are the master, to accept or not to accept. You will test which of the two is right, and if it is right, then you will act on it. If it is not right, you will not act on it.

Superstitions in general, then, are right-hand thoughts that climb up even higher than the Gospel, and they make a person miserable, and he suffers. And when some failure comes, for example, some illness, or a death, it in fact has a completely different cause.

There is the person with the thought from the right, the pious-looking thought: You see, it's because the wedding was held in the same year; you see, it's because one bride was married and then the other bride the next day, and so on. That is what these things are. I did tell you to be on guard against them. And so they shift it onto something else, they pin it somewhere else.

Whereas the thing has other reasons and another cause. What happened is entirely unconnected, and you could not have prevented it by any superstition you might have kept, by any thought you might have followed. So if a person examines his life and himself, to see whether, and how far,

he is standing rightly and his thoughts are sound, that is a difficult thing.

This is why I was telling you: we need a guide who has discernment, a spiritual father who has discernment — not only someone who has the right, or rather the authority, to bind and to loose, but someone who also has the experience to guide a person. That is why the people of the Spirit, the people of the desert, are always searching for a spiritual father with discernment, so that they can entrust their thoughts to him and discern whether the thought they have is a right one.

Is his thought from the good, or is it from the evil one? We take whatever comes into our head and put it into practice at once, and then the results turn out to be the opposite of what we wanted, and we weep over it for the rest of our lives.

This is one side of it, this matter of superstitions that I have raised with you, and each of you will take care to notice that such a thought is one of the right-hand thoughts, and that it torments him; that it is, let me say plainly, from Satan and not from Christ.

On top of this thought, another one comes to my mind, one that very often makes many families miserable, and which I have not spoken about. Although I have given four talks, I have not touched on it, if I remember rightly.

It is the matter of a second marriage, or a third. These things happen in society and in families. Many people, whether women or men, enter into a second marriage, and very often with children as well.

What sweeps them along is the right-hand thought that the children will find a father, a protector, that they will not be orphans; or that they will find a mother to look after them, so that they will not be filthy, will not be wretched, so that they will have a plate of food.

And now Satan's little henchmen come rushing in from outside to arrange the match, to marry off the widower or to marry off the widow, with the thought, the right-hand thought, that they are rendering a service.

And yet a second marriage, for a widow or for widowers afterwards, is not ruled out; but neither is it required.

It is not urged, either by Holy Scripture or by the Fathers. The one who has taken up this subject above all is the Apostle Paul. And when we say Paul, we are saying Christ. But the second Christ, the one who has interpreted Paul's mind exactly, gives us the whole picture of this, and it is not that lovely picture of a protector being found for the orphans.

orphans, or a protector for the orphans. No! These are logismoi—intrusive thoughts that come from the right, appearing to be good. This is what usually lies hidden behind the honey. And it is true, and we must admit it, that many subsequent marriages did not prosper. They brought misery. Indeed, John Chrysostom says in one of his homilies that such a man does not bring into the home...

The man who marries a second time does not bring in a mother hen to cover the orphaned chicks; he brings a wolf into the house, he says.

And this same counsel I gave above, he says, is useful for husbands as well: that they too be content with their first wives, the ones who have died, and not give their children stepmothers in place of the mothers who were enough for them — women who, once they are brought into the house, overturn even the safety of children at a tender age.

And this is true. Listen now, and I repeat the whole thought: a second marriage is not forbidden, but neither is it encouraged. When a second marriage is urged on someone, especially when there are children, that is a right-hand thought, a logismos by which Satan intends to set up his throne inside that house.

If now in one case out of a thousand it turns out otherwise, that is the exception; it does not count. The rule is failure. So listen to the mind of Saint John Chrysostom.

We are not abolishing second marriage, nor are we laying down a law about it; we are only offering counsel. So, if anyone wishes to live in chastity and self-restraint, let them remain with the first and only marriage. That is what we are saying. And we urge and advise this also for the sake of the household's own security. For the home's sake: do not put two mothers in your house, he says; that is why I say it.

For the second marriage has many times become the beginning and the occasion of daily quarrels and daily wars.

Often, for example, a man sitting at the table remembers his first wife and quietly sheds a tear.

But she — the new wife — instantly flew into a rage and went at him like a wild animal, accusing him of still loving the other woman: "So you still love her, do you? You don't love me?" And if she could, she would gladly dig up the wife who had died before her — even though the poor man had only given her what she deserved, and so on.

Her praise becomes a cause of conflict and strife. Simply saying one word in her defense—something the deceased woman deserved, after all—becomes, he says, an occasion for conflict and strife.

And with our enemies, once they have died, we make peace; when my enemy dies, I am at peace with him, and together with their life we also put an end to our hostility toward them. Their life has stopped, and the hostility stops with it; death ends it.

But with wives the exact opposite happens. The woman she never saw, never heard, at whose hands she suffered no evil at all, this is the one she hates and turns away from. And not even death undoes the hatred. Who has ever heard of someone being jealous of dust and making war on ashes?

Wise words, and let anyone tell me they are not true. But the evil does not stop here. Whether children are born from the second wife or the second husband, or whether they are not born, war and battle rise up again.

For if no children are born to her, the lady of the house is grieved all the more, and for this reason she looks on the children of the first wife as her enemies who have done her a great injustice, because their very existence makes her feel her own childlessness more sharply, whenever she sees those other children.

And if children are born, if the two of them do have children, the evil is no less, because the husband often, out of love or out of a sound conscience toward the wife or the husband who has died, takes special care of the first children; whether it is the father or the mother, they are his own, and he looks after the first children.

Loving them and having compassion on them, and at the same time out of ordinary human pity for their orphanhood. But she, or he, wants their own children to be preferred everywhere. And not even to be kept in the rank of brothers and sisters, not treating them alike, not holding them all as equals.

But she thinks it right that they should be found in the rank of despised servants. All of these things are able to overturn a household, and once they enter into a second marriage they can make life unlivable. For these reasons I counsel you, if it is possible, to live in self-restraint, to be content with the first marriage.

Do not be swept along by the thought, and do not go looking for second marriages, whether it is men or women who take them; two mothers in the house, and the whole household is overturned. And yet even so, many people, with the thought that they will be offering protection to someone, that they will warm and shelter and cover and stand by, with this right-hand thought, without weighing the consequences, my dear ones, and those consequences are true ninety-nine percent of the time.

If one woman, or one man, is found who does stand by and sacrifice for the other's children, that, I repeat, is the exception. The rule is that a person is swept along and creates a situation in the house that you would not find even in the jungle.

This too is a thought, a logismos, that has to be watched very closely. There are many of them. These are not the only points the holy man makes. There are many. I simply gathered them by hand, reading this from the fourth volume of the complete works of Chrysostom, and I set it before you as confirmation of what I have been saying.

Let each one think it over, and let him neither drag others along nor be dragged along himself. Never rush to help people who have tried their luck this way. Christ knew this too: do not put your hand in to play the matchmaking mother-in-law, thinking you are doing good.

You will have trouble on the day of judgment. Your logismos—your intrusive thought— is deceiving you. If you can help someone, if you can pray for them, then strengthen them, keep them steady, do not drag them off course. Because afterwards the person will not be able to be healed, and a soul will be lost, and the body will suffer too.

Here let me open a small parenthesis. The other day there were some written notes. Actually one note must have arrived late, because I did not see it. It has to do with what I had said, that a person must be careful both about what he vows and about paying what he vowed. You made a vow, so fulfill it.

Do not let your logismos—your intrusive thought—look for some way to claim that you have fulfilled the vow without actually carrying it out. This note apparently arrived late, in a sealed envelope; it reached us here, but I did not see it. Yet it raises a substantial question.

It says this: a mother made a vow that if Saint Paraskevi would give her a daughter, she would give that daughter to be a nun. The mother never did it. Are these daughters bound by it? Is there an obligation? It was a vow. Who can answer? There is no question of distinction here about whether the mother made the vow. If the mother did make the vow, and the daughter knew about it, then the daughter is bound, and she should take up the place appointed for her and fulfill the vow.

If she was not released from it later on, then in any case... Then again, if she wants to release her mother from it, she should hurry to fulfill it, if she loves her mother. Her mother is bound by the vow her mother made.

And if she wants to, and if she loves her mother and wants to set her mother free, let her hurry to become a nun. This is a matter for a spiritual father to decide. It is not something to settle in the abstract. I only know so much, and I do not say more. That is my answer to that particular thought.

In any case, now that this parenthesis is closed, let us move on to the other things that trouble a great many people and make them miserable afterwards, all because of these thoughts from the right.

You have heard of many people who are called prodigals. This is said mostly of men, but today it applies to women as well.

The prodigal son, they say: he ate it all up at cards, he ate it up at the racetrack, he ate it up on lottery tickets, he ate it up at the casino, and so on. Yes, I agree. Women do this today too. But can you tell me where it starts?

It starts from the thoughts from the right, the thought that he is going to win, not that he is going to lose. That is where it begins.

Nobody ever set out to go and throw money away, whether at cards, or at the racetrack, or on the lottery, or on this and that and the other. It is the thought from the right that lures a person on with the bait of winning, and it has brought people to this ruin.

Many people have made themselves miserable and have also brought misery upon many of those around them, because they were led astray and obeyed these seemingly good logismoi—these intrusive thoughts—which told them that they would win. They saw something in a dream, heard a voice telling them a number, and so on.

And there are people who have gone into debt and sold what they had, even though they lost once, twice, three times, with the idea that they would win it back, with the idea that they would get it all again, and with that bait of the thought from the right they do not stop; they go all the way to the bottom and they destroy themselves and they destroy everyone who depends on them.

Never believe that you will win and then keep your weakness under control. It is not an easy thing for anyone to throw away his own sweat unless that thought from the right is there, the thought that there is a chance to multiply it, and indeed with good odds, based on his cleverness, his sharpness, his form guides and figures, and so on.

And there are people who have been robbed of everything; there are people who came back from the racetrack—as an old song once put it—carried away by this seemingly sound reasoning. People have ended up on the streets; people have been utterly ruined, always clinging to the thought that they are smarter, that they understand things better, and so on. And in the end, no one ever comes out ahead.

No one. There are no winners among those who have anything to do with games of chance. If someone was very strong indeed and won something once and then stopped playing, that man might be said to have come out ahead. Even so, that money is not blessed, because it does not carry the blessing of sweat; it did not come by the sweat of their own face.

It is in a way easy money, in a way it is money taken by robbery, so to speak, because at that moment you are robbing the other man and moving the money out of his pocket into yours through the card game, or because you are cleverer and quicker, and you may even be cheating, pulling all sorts of tricks, and carrying money off with you.

But even that money is not blessed. Joy to those people who have conquered this passion and were not conquered by it. And much greater joy, and a prize, to those who never once took the cards into their hands at all.

It is a great bait, a thought very much from the right, and it destroys a person's time, his hours, and his money, and his health as well. Because I do not know if you have ever happened to be card players, but nothing gives people such violent excitement, and nothing makes so many heart cases, as the deck of cards.

The deck of cards is a powerful seductress. So beware of it. And today it has even become fashionable to gamble away the fruits of other people’s sweat—to gamble away the money needed for the medicines of the weak and for their basic needs, staking it all at the card table.

Let's be careful about this. The thought that comes from the right — the thought that looks good and pious — is very satanic. In my book Being a Good Person Is One Thing, Being a Christian Is Another, I reproduced a flyer that had been circulated among high society, announcing a pinochle tea to be held at the George for charitable purposes.

You understand, the bait—the whole way the thing was woven together—was the phrase “for charitable purposes”: they were holding a tea-and-card party.

Each one was obliged — it was required of him — to get his own party together, his foursome at the card table, so that they could play. There would be an entrance fee of fifty drachmas, and they would collect it from everyone who came. Four hundred, four hundred and fifty people would come, and that made fifteen thousand drachmas.

They would gamble among themselves—one hundred, two hundred, three hundred, even five hundred thousand drachmas. Then they would give fifteen thousand to the poor as well. “We are not gambling for any other reason; we are gambling for charity.” The devil, once you have first paid your tribute to him, will then permit you to become a philanthropist too.

This is what we call a thought from the right — a temptation dressed up as something good. Again, on May Day I saw them selling flowers at the Grande Bretagne — basil, carnations — for charity: fifty drachmas, a hundred drachmas, and those who could afford it went inside to celebrate. They'd blow fifteen or twenty thousand in there, and then hand over a fifty outside for charity.

Without the feast, they would not give the pittance. Without the dancing, the pittance would not... The bait, the right-hand thought: Satan has many devices for getting a person into his hands. And so, among the things that torment people and make them the prodigals of our day, there is card playing, there is the racetrack, there are the lotteries. He leads people into lotteries where they gamble thousands of drachmas. There was one man in particular who played the even number—that is, he tried to hit 2.

If the number 2 came up, he would win. So he bought a hundred five-drachma lottery tickets bearing the number 2. The second time the 2 failed to come up, he bought two hundred tickets. The third time, he bought four hundred, then eight hundred. He had reached a million drachmas and still had not hit the number 2. The evil thought kept telling him that he would eventually win and double his money. He was close to losing his mind, and I do not know whether, even to this day, the 2 ever came up for him—or whether he still had the means to keep doubling his stake so that he might recover all that money. That was the seemingly reasonable thought that deceived him.

How are you supposed to sleep? How could sleep ever come to you? Once Satan gets his hands on you, after that he'll make you dance to his tune. This is exactly what happens to people who gamble at the racetrack, to people who play cards, to people who play the roulette tables, in the casinos, and so on.

That is what happens to them. They entertain the favorable thought: “I have an inner assurance that this one will win. Such-and-such a horse will race well; that other one will do this,” and so on. And you see what it does to a person: he suffers and is tormented, and his blood sugar rises, all because a horse is going to race at the racetrack.

And I remember an unbelievable case, at a clinic for regulating blood sugar.

Among the other patients there, there was one man whose sugar went up every Saturday and Sunday.

All week long they could not manage it. They would bring him in and get his sugar regulated, and then on the weekend it would climb, three hundred, three hundred and fifty, four hundred. The professor could not work it out. It is impossible, he said to his assistants, the man is eating. It cannot be otherwise; someone is secretly bringing him food and he is eating it. We will keep watch and see.

So indeed they set people to watch, including the beds next to his, to see whether anyone was bringing him food. No one was bringing him any food.

Then one day one of the young doctors says to the professor: Professor, I have found it. What have you found? Why is it, he says, that Stafatos has high sugar every weekend? Well, have you found the answer? No, you have not. He has a horse at the racetrack. He has a horse running at the racetrack.

And from his own thinking, from his agonizing over it, what will happen, how will it go, how will the horse run, what will it place, his sugar went up. Every single weekend. Now, do not think these things I am telling you are strange. What I am telling you comes from life; it is the truth. I did not come here to tell you fairy tales, I will tell you truths, and each of you must take care to break free.

Do not imagine that Satan is playing games with you, that you can go on doing as you please and set things right afterward. Once he gets his hand on you, he will grind you down and turn you into a thief in the end. I have said this once before, and I will say it again now.

There was a man who lost everything gambling, and he went and jumped over into the back of his own house. He broke open his own kitchen door and got inside. And he stole five five-hundred-drachma notes that were kept in a certain spot, put there by his wife.

And he climbed back out the same way he came in, and he went off and gambled that money too — and he lost it as well. And as this man was coming out, a policeman who happened to be patrolling there in Psychiko arrested him, because he had smashed the glass and gone inside and come back out again — a thief in his own home, stealing his own money.

That is where it catches up with him, and that is where the man is utterly disgraced. But that is only the first of the many kinds of ruin bound up in all these things: everything that happens inside homes, in relationships, and so on. But one thing that does great damage is failing to put one's affairs in order. We have spoken about this before, but since it is timely, let me set this before you as well.

What we're dealing with here is a particular kind of thought, a logismos. Take, for example, someone who is seriously ill. They haven't put the affairs of their house in order. "When I get out, I'll take care of it." When I get out. They don't say if they'll get out. "When I get out, I'll take care of everything. Once I'm back home, of course, I'll make a point of bringing in a notary to settle it all."

The real thought should be: if I get out. And of course this applies more to him, but let us not think it does not apply to us. The person who leaves his affairs unsettled and hanging, if he happens to depart from here unexpectedly for the other world, will see what comes of his words.

And then all the regiments are going to gather over his grave — the demons together with his own relatives — and there will be a quarrel. Woe to him if he does not put these things in order now, and instead fools himself with "I will," with "tomorrow," with "the day after," with "me," with "yours," with "mine."

A person is obliged to keep the affairs of his household always in order and secured, so that he does not become the cause of trouble. The sins he already has are enough for him. Let him not heap still more sins on his own head.

Do not be deceived into thinking you will live; do not be deceived into thinking you will get well; do not be deceived into thinking you will arrive, that you will do this and then you will do that. Ha! Did you see how beautifully James put it about this very thought? You have read it, haven't you? People say, he says, we will go, we will do business, we will spend two years, we will come back, we will go on to another city, and so on.

And they do not say, if God wills. Do you know what God has arranged? Do you know whether God will call you tonight? So why put off setting your affairs in order until tomorrow, when you can settle it tonight? Settle it while there is still time.

So that your children are not divided, so that your relatives are not divided, so that others are not set against one another over you and curse you, and it becomes a cause of blasphemy, and a cause of feuds, so that people stop speaking to one another. Why should that happen?

It is because of your pride, or because you fear that if you put your household affairs in order, you may die. Neither is true: neither the thought that threatens and frightens you, nor the one that promises you will go on living.

You remember what I told you about the ascetic. You will live thirty years, the tempter told him. Thirty years, and within three days he was gone. God thinks one way, and Satan suggests another. And on this very point many people managed in time and set their affairs in order, while many did not manage it, because they were not watchful. They were carried away by their right-hand thoughts, and they brought about the very opposite result.

There is something else that should not be left out of these talks, something that happens for the most part in our own times.

You know that out of every hundred Christians, let us say, about ninety of them are the ones who are now speaking with the Most Holy Theotokos. They are the ones speaking with the Saints, the ones seeing visions, the ones hearing noises, the ones for whom the icon smiles, or weeps, or does a thousand and one other things.

These falls come from the right. Guard against them as much as you possibly can. All these things that are said, that are heard, that are put on display, even if they are true, we have no need of them.

They contribute nothing to a person's salvation. Because there is always the possibility that Satan, disguised as an angel of light, is working a person's destruction. That is exactly why we are called to be on our guard, buttoned up. Whether you like it or not, what should govern us is what Saint Hilarion says.

Christ appeared to him, in formal robes.

“Do you know Me?” He asks him. “I do not know You.” “Do you not know that I am the Lord?” “But I would not wish to see the Lord in this world; may He count me worthy to see Him in the world to come.”

At those words, the one who had appeared turned away and left behind him a black soot and a stench, and vanished.

We, on the other hand, will even go and tell it to our confessor: father, you know, I saw Christ, just like this. But why was it necessary for Christ to appear to you? Not that he cannot appear, God forbid, and I am not the one to deny him that right. But I ask you this: if, one time in a million, it was not Christ, what will become of you?

Tomorrow he will lead you astray, he will plant the idea in you, he will plant the notion that you stand higher than everyone else. You have proof, after all, that you are in contact with Christ and with the Theotokos. And there is every chance you will be carried off and say you have no need of the Church, no need of the priests, no need of confession, no need of the rest of the virtues to which you have been called.

The truth is that Christ will be more pleased if, when he himself appears, you do not receive him, than if you do.

Let me give you an example.

The master or the mistress of the house is going away for two days, and before leaving gives an order to the maid or the servant: "Listen carefully. No matter who comes, no matter who knocks and tells you, 'I've been sent, I have orders to come here,' you are not to open the door until Wednesday, when I get back."

Thank you very much. Goodbye, goodbye.

So the master set out, and for one reason or another he missed the train, he missed the plane, and he came back home that same evening.

...in the evening. There is a knock at the door. “Who is it?” “It is I, George.” “Who?” “Your master.” “Oh, you are not my master. My master told me that he would come on Wednesday.” “But I missed the train, then I missed the car, and so I have only just arrived. George, can’t you hear me? Are you in such a hurry?” “Oh, no. Wednesday—that is what my master told me. I cannot open the door. Please forgive me, but I cannot open it.” And he leaves him outside until daybreak. In the morning the master appears, and they see each other; and when he enters the house, the master says...

His master speaks to him, and he congratulates him, because he did not open the door; he held firm. The servant says, "Even if it turns out I was mistaken, I stand by what my master told me." And what has the Lord told us? That is exactly where we ought to stand. Would there be so many deluded people today? Would there be a Magaritsa, a Magoula, who has led so many astray — even bishops and priests — saying that Christ was crucified on Thursday, because, she claims, the Theotokos told her that Christ was crucified on Thursday afternoon?

When she was asked, "Why, my child, do you place the Crucifixion on Thursday?" she answered, "Because our Lord was crucified on Thursday." But has she never read the Gospel? Has she never heard, on Great Friday itself, that Christ was crucified on Great Friday?

And then, so it is said, she confessed to Father Angelos, may he rest in peace. Supposedly. She thought she would go to confession, admit her delusion, and set herself straight. And yet, for fifteen or twenty years she sent so many people to their ruin. How many are there today following behind Krikettou — Athanasia, that is her name, Athanasia Krikettou. How many are there today; and never mind the others, the so-called enlightened ones. There is Nikiphora, the one over in Kato Patisia, who came to Corinth — and I had been giving talks in Corinth for ten years, and I find that Niki, Nikiphora, had come.

Nikifora from Thavdina—what can we do?—gathered such a crowd around her. “I am deeply sorry,” I said, “because you still have not understood what is really going on. But if you remain faithful, she will very soon be exposed, and you will see for yourselves.” No more than thirty or forty days passed before, in one of her sermons, she said that the Most Holy Theotokos had told them that a flood would come in forty days. And in Ancient Corinth they began collecting money. Indeed, the newspaper Ekklisia, which was published at the time, even printed the announcement.

It ran the announcement. They collected money, and the Corinthians began building an ark so that they could be saved. I came across it again among our records at the department, and I say: glory to God.

Has Christ not told us that He will never send another flood? Does He not set the rainbow in the sky,

has He not placed it there as a reminder, so that it would not be forgotten? And if He were to send another flood to destroy us, in a certain sense I could believe it, because of our unbelief and our divisions. But a flood, no. Because He is faithful; God does not lie.

It is not that He has no way to destroy us. He has the power to wipe us out in seconds, in the twinkling of an eye. But a flood, no; because He is faithful, and He does set the rainbow in the sky to comfort us.

And thankfully Nikifora disappeared from there. Even so, she is still around, still talking with the Most Holy Theotokos, and spiritual people go to her and make their Confession to her.

This is the kind of reasoning that gets accepted. How many things are discussed around the case of the late Mrs. Zoloti, how many things, how many people write day and night. You know, they say the Most Holy Theotokos is writing a Gospel, a new Gospel, and what is Christ to do then, throw away His own Gospel?

If you read the books written by these women, and above all by the lady who has died, your hair will stand on end at the blasphemy against God the Father and the rest. And even so, there are people who follow, because these women hold the Cross in their hand. These are thoughts from the right; they are false, they are the bait. On the outside they display piety, and yet in reality they lead somewhere else entirely.

And what is the aim today? That only the Most Holy Theotokos saves. She sets up a school of redemption, she sets up a society, and she saves. Let salvation through Christ be pushed aside; now we are to have salvation through the Theotokos. Do you understand? That is where the fall lies. That is why everything I am telling you here is a serious matter.

Of course, one hears about it, and off they go the way the others go. "She takes away the evil eye," they say. "I take away the evil eye with the Our Father,"

The evil eye is of Satan. You make use of Satan, and the evil eye is supposedly removed. But the Church has a prayer against the evil eye. Why do you not go to your spiritual father and ask him to come and read the prayers of exorcism and the prayer against the evil eye, so that your loved one may be healed? Instead, you want Mrs. Katina, or this woman, or that one.

and this woman and that woman, and supposedly they cleanse you. She may set your body free, but she binds your soul—the very same thing a witch or sorcerer does. She sets your young man free, she sets your daughter free, but only in body, while taking hold of the soul.

When you go by way of the Church, with fasting, with vigil, with prayer, both body and soul are set free. But the witch's way is easy,

To hand the witch five hundred drachmas so she will drive the devil out of the body, and in the process lose the soul — that is what a person prefers, under the influence of these thoughts from the right-hand side, these temptations that come dressed up as something good, telling him he is saving a human being. Far better that the body should melt away like a bar of soap worn down to nothing, pinned down there the way the enemy has nailed him, than that the soul should be lost. Better to lose the body — and this in spite of the fact that the Church has the power to save the body and to save the soul as well. That is the nature of these thoughts. Thank you.

and so is the power that works through dreams. Has God not made things known to people through dreams? Does He not speak that way? Yes, but for the most part, ninety-nine percent of the time, dreams are delusion. The Fathers of the Church say this: "When the demons begin to deceive you in your sleep, then they will fall upon you while you are awake as well."

When you begin, he says, to put your trust in the devil, who plays his part in your sleep, then very soon, he says, he will fool you with your eyes wide open as well. And Saint Nilus says something else: the man who pays attention to his dreams is like a man chasing his own shadow.

And you can see how truly these men speak. My beloved, as I said at the beginning, I say now at the end as well. My purpose was not to be able to marshal every single thing that happens to us, everything that happens to each one of us.

My purpose in everything that has been said over these five evenings was to give each of you a small starting point, so that in your own way, with a discerning spiritual father and with patristic books, you may examine your logismoi, the thoughts that come to you; how you think, how you act, and whether the things you do, if they are not from the left, may perhaps be dictated from the right; so that they may be correct, so that they stand up against Scripture and against the Church, and so that some of us may be spared.

That is why we have spoken of these things. Forgive me, and may Christ forgive you. Amen.

Απόψε το βράδυ θα θίξω μερικά ακόμη από αυτά που μπορούν να αποτελέσουν πάλι βοήθημα σε ορισμένους. Θα ήθελα να σταθώ στις προλήψεις τις λεγόμενες. Σας έχει απασχολήσει ποτέ η πρόληψη, τι είναι η πρόληψη;

Το σαπούνι ευθύνεται. Δεν θα σας έχει συμβεί και εσάς αυτό το πράγμα; Ποιος πήγε να το εξομολογηθεί ότι έχει την πρόληψη αυτή; Ότι τον βασανίζει αυτή η σκέψη; Και ότι εξαρτά τη φιλία και την αγάπη από το να πάρει το σαπούνι από το χέρι του διπλανού ή να μην το πάρει;

Εάν δεν πάει το καθένα στην ώρα του, το καθένα στον τόπο του, δεν μπορείς ό,τι ώρα θέλεις εσύ να ανάβεις κεριά, ό,τι ώρα θέλεις εσύ να θυμιάζεις, ούτε να πηγαίνεις να ασπάζεσαι τις εικόνες. Ποιος σου είπε ότι μπορείς να ασπάζεσαι το τέμπλο κάθε ώρα, σαν να έχεις πάρει ευλογία;

Επί δε τας γυναίκας όλως διόλου του εναντίον συμβαίνει. Εκείνη δηλαδή την οποία δεν είδε, την οποία δεν ήκουσε, παρά της οποίας κανένας δεν έπαθε κακόν, ταύτη μισεί και αποστρέφεται. Και ουδέ ο θάνατος το μίσος λύει. Είδε ποιος ήκουσε να ζηλοτυπείται κόνις και να πολεμείται τέφρα;

Άσωτος υιός, τάφαγε, λέει, στο χαρτί, τάφαγε στον ιππόδρομο, τάφαγε στα λαχεία, τάφαγε στο καζίνο, τάφαγε και λοιπά. Ναι, συμφωνώ. Αυτό το κάνουν και οι γυναίκες σήμερα. Μπορείς να μου πεις από πού ξεκινάει;

Να μην διχαστούν τα παιδιά σου, να μην διχαστούν οι συγγενείς σου, να μην διχαστούν οι άλλοι επάνω σου και σε καταρώνεται και γίνεται θεία να βλασιμούνται και γίνεται αιτία αντεκδικήσεων να μην μιλιώνται οι άνθρωποι. Γιατί;

Εμείς θα το πούμε και στον εξομολόγο, ξέρεις πάτερ, είδα το Χριστό έτσι και εσύ. Γιατί ήταν ανάγκη να σε παρουσιαστεί ο Χριστός; Όχι ότι δεν μπορεί να παρουσιαστεί η μη γέννηση, ούτε του το αποκλείω το δικαίωμα εγώ, Αλλά σε ρωτώ εάν ένα της εκατομμυρίης δεν ήταν ο Χριστός, τι έχεις να πάθεις;

Λέγει ο κύριός του, τον συνεχάρη, διότι δεν άνοιξε· κράτησε. Λέει: «Αν γελαστώ, εγώ στέκομαι σε αυτό που μου είπε ο κύριος». Τι μας έχει πει ο Κύριος; Στο σημείο αυτό να είμαστε. Θα υπήρχαν τόσοι πλανημένοι άνθρωποι σήμερα; Θα υπήρχε η Μαγαρίτσα, η Μαγουλά, να έχει τόσους παρασύρει, μέχρι και αρχιερείς και ιερείς, και να λέγει ότι ο Χριστός σταυρώθηκε την Πέμπτη, γιατί η Παναγία μού είπε ότι ο Χριστός εσταυρώθη την Πέμπτη το απόγευμα;

Όταν ερωτήθηκε: «Γιατί, παιδί μου, τοποθετείς τη Σταύρωση την Πέμπτη;» απάντησε: «Διότι εσταυρώθη ο Κύριός μας την Πέμπτη». Μα δεν έχει διαβάσει ποτέ Ευαγγέλιο; Δεν έχει ακούσει τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή ότι ο Χριστός εσταυρώθη τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή;
