Summary
On the Sunday of the Holy Fathers, Dimitrios Panagopoulos rejects any religion fashioned for private convenience and calls believers to receive the apostolic faith preserved by the Church. Scripture, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and Holy Tradition together disclose doctrine, worship, and sacramental life; isolated interpretation, warned against in 2 Peter 3:15-16, exposes the reader to error. Ecumenical and local councils, with the Fathers’ canons, safeguard both right belief and right practice. At Nicaea in 325 the First Ecumenical Council confessed Christ’s full divinity against Arius and framed the Creed’s opening articles, confirming Peter’s confession in Matthew 16:13-19. Accounts of Saints Achillius, Spyridon, Nicholas, and Euphemia express the Church’s conviction that the Spirit vindicates conciliar truth. Every word of the Creed must therefore be guarded, since subtle alteration may deform the faith.

The first Sunday after the Ascension is dedicated to the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council.
It is an opportunity the Church gives people to learn precisely how they should walk. You know, most of us are simply religious. But it is not enough merely to be religious; we must practice the faith rightly.
It is not enough for a person to believe in his own way and fashion a kind of religion that suits him—whether self-serving, fleshly, worldly, or egotistical. The mold has already been cut and formed, and Christ offers it to every person who is willing to enter into it.
Every day you hear people discussing many religions, many leaders, and many beliefs; and even among Christians there are still divisions. If you look at the Protestant world, which supposedly cares so deeply about Christ, you will find that today it contains more than 350 heresies.
And every year a new offshoot appears, claiming that all 350 were mistaken and saying, “Our interpretation is the correct one.” This does not happen in Orthodoxy. Orthodoxy preserves exactly what it received from the Apostles.
That is why we have confidence in the faith we follow. Christ preached, and the Apostles wrote. Then what the Apostles had written was interpreted.
For both the Gospels and the epistles were written through the Holy Spirit. Of course, they contain a human element, but it is a human element illumined by the Holy Spirit. They are not subject to some other, merely human interpretation.
The human element is there, but it does not conflict with Holy Scripture. What Holy Scripture says is also what the Apostle says. Yet there are still many things that a person cannot understand. Peter himself writes that our brother Paul wrote and spoke about certain matters that seemed difficult to understand, and that some people interpreted them improperly, to their own destruction.
We Orthodox Christians are not expected to pick up the Gospel today and devise our own interpretation of it. The Gospel has both been written and interpreted. And it has been interpreted by the same Holy Spirit who inspired its writing.
The Holy Spirit wrote through some and interpreted through others. Christ told us the parable of the Good Samaritan. He said that the man who fell among thieves was taken to an inn and entrusted to the innkeeper, who was given two denarii to care for him and see to his healing.
What are those two denarii? They are Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition. Holy Scripture cannot be interpreted without Holy Tradition, nor can Holy Tradition be accepted unless it stands in harmony with Holy Scripture. Each of the two completes the other.
For example, Christ has not yet ascended; He will ascend on Thursday. He remained with the Apostles for forty days, speaking to them about the Kingdom of God. Where is all that written? What did He say? The Evangelists do not tell us.
Yet there is another book in the patristic writings called the Apostolic Constitutions, which records what Christ said during those days. If a person is deprived of this as well, he is deprived of a very important source and does not know precisely how he should proceed.
For example, our Lord said: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." How will this happen? How will this baptism take place? Christ said: "Take, eat, this is my flesh; drink from it, all of you, this is my blood."
How, then, is this Mystery of the Holy Eucharist to be celebrated? The other part, Holy Tradition, comes and says, “This is how it is to be done.” Is it enough to hand you a bottle of medicine without also giving you the instructions that explain the prescription?
How will you use it? You will produce the opposite result. Exactly the same thing happens in this case. That is why everything within the Orthodox Church has been tested and verified. It was not established because some human being wanted it, but because the Holy Spirit willed it.
And so we see that, from the earliest days, when weeds began to spring up within the Church—especially concerning the person of Christ and whether or not He is God—people gathered together in the Holy Spirit, praying and imploring God to illumine them and show them whether their interpretation was correct.
That is why we Orthodox Christians have seven Ecumenical Councils and eleven local councils, whose acts were confirmed by the Ecumenical Councils. In addition, councils accepted the judgments of other Holy Fathers as Canons of ecclesiastical law. These Canons impose penalties, admonish, teach, and correct people. Examples include the more than ninety Canons of Basil the Great, as well as those of Saint John the Faster, Timothy of Alexandria, Dionysius of Alexandria, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and many other Fathers. The Church preserves them as Canons to help each person journey along the right path.
These are what we call dogmas. If you approach a heretic, the first thing he will propose is that you should speak as free and educated people, without dogmas.
He will immediately cast them aside. It is as though he were saying, “We are about to set sail, but first let us remove the lighthouses. We do not need them.” Without them, you could not even sail safely out of Keratsini.
If you remove the beacons that warn you, “Not there—a rock! Not there—a reef! Not there—a shoal! No, no, no,” that is what these people are saying. What we call dogmas are the beacons that guide us safely, so that we may land and reach our destination.
I do not know whether you have ever traveled by airplane and landed at night. You will see lights shining below at the airport, guiding the airplane where to go and which runway to follow.
There are red lights, green lights, and purple lights. The pilot, taking care to avoid the red lights and so forth, sets his course and proceeds where the lights direct him. This is precisely what our Church has done.
This coming Sunday brings before us that first Council. The day after tomorrow, the Sunday after the Ascension, is the Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the First Holy Ecumenical Council, which took place in Nicaea, there in that city. We Orthodox Christians do not know much about these things. Of course, we do not even know much about the Gospel. Satan does not let us read or concern ourselves with matters that reach beyond the grave. Instead, people occupy themselves with other things and torment themselves.
A person suffers, loses his health, and may even end up in a psychiatric hospital, and so forth. But such concerns reach only as far as the grave; they cannot endure beyond it. The things of the Kingdom of God endure even beyond the grave.
But people never really take hold of these things. That is why the matters we are discussing seem like mysteries to them. And it is even considered excessive for us to say that we supposedly hold the truth. The Pope says, "I." Whatever he says, that one man, that is what is correct. Orthodoxy does not say this. Because Christ said, "Woe to him that is alone" — woe to the one, if he is by himself; "where two or three are gathered together, there am I in the midst of them."
...through them. Did He not do the same with those two on the road to Emmaus, as they walked along discussing these things in anguish? Tonight I wanted to speak about something that may one day become a temptation for us, something that reflects the opinion of most people. This...
Thank you.
From the earliest days of the Church, the first question that arose was whether Christ is God or not, because even to this day, you know...
Consider the question of the divinity of Jesus. People accept Christ as a reformer, as someone who preached things no one else had preached—a sublime teaching of love and forgiveness.
But when they come to the question of His divinity, they somehow stop there. It is like the philosophers on Mars Hill: when they heard that Christ had risen, they broke off the discussion. “Leave that,” they told him. “We will discuss it some other time.” It seemed utterly ridiculous to them.
Many people, then, celebrate the feast days and enjoy their holidays—Christmas and Pascha—and they receive their holiday bonus as well. They keep all these customs: they light candles, send good wishes, hear “Christ is risen,” and answer, “Truly He is risen.”
Yet they stumble over the divinity of Jesus, and they stumble over the Resurrection of Jesus. This is an issue Satan presses very strongly and will not let go. It is not in Satan’s interest for a person to believe in the divinity of Jesus and in the Resurrection of Jesus.
He does not want anyone to believe this. That is why, from the very first day, he sowed weeds and stirred up men against the faith. As we said the other day, if you remember, when we were speaking about Saint Constantine and Saint Helen, Constantine the Great heard all the uproar and disagreement and convened the First Ecumenical Council, bringing together bishops, priests, monks, martyrs, and ascetics.
There were 318 of them, in the year 325, and in the Holy Spirit they defined the dogma and declared whether Christ was also God or not—that is, whether He was only the Son of the Virgin or also the Son of God. Our Christ was both: the Son of God became the Son of the Virgin.
He became so. He was the Only-Begotten of the Father and the only-begotten of His mother. He was the Firstborn of the Father and the firstborn of His mother. Of course, people who see everything in merely human terms, who think that human beings can come into the world only through the union of husband and wife, through blood and flesh and sensual pleasure, cannot grasp these things. But if such things had intervened, there would have been no birth of One who is more than human, the God-Man, Christ. There would simply have been the birth of yet another human being, bearing ancestral sin upon his shoulders.
Otherwise, He too would have needed a physician’s healing. Therefore, the One who would heal others had to be something more, outside the ordinary manner of conception and birth, so that He would be able to impart healing to others.
Otherwise, He Himself would also have been sick.
This, then, is the most serious issue that the First Ecumenical Council, whose Fathers we commemorate the day after tomorrow, seeks to remind us of.
At the Council, the Holy Spirit presided. Someone may ask: How can it be shown that this Council possessed the grace of the Holy Spirit, that all that took place there, all the judgments rendered and decisions made, were through the Holy Spirit? By the miracles that occurred at the First Ecumenical Council. Four miracles took place at the First Ecumenical Council. I behold the miracles, and I proclaim the divinity.
“Divinity,” says Saint Proclus. “I see the sufferings that testify to His humanity. I see Him hunger, weep, walk, sleep, and ask questions: He is man. He opens graves, fashions eyes, casts out demons: He is God.”
What will you see tomorrow, on Sunday, when He makes an eye with a little earth and a little saliva? What does that reveal? Can human beings create eyes?
Do human beings do things like this? No, they don't. The one who does such things has to be God. Think of the woman with six men — notice how, with a single conversation, He made her forget her water jar and become Equal-to-the-Apostles, a saint ranked with the apostles themselves. Do human beings do things like this? No, they don't. God does. A man paralysed for thirty-eight years, and He says to him, "Take up your bed and be on your way." Who can do things like this? Can human beings? No, human beings cannot do them; God does them. Now, Satan too is called a god — but that gets us nowhere, because he is the god of this world.
For everything stands or falls with the divinity of Jesus. Do you remember when He asked what people called Him? What did the disciples say? “We hear that some out there call You Elijah, others Jeremiah, and others one of the prophets.”
“Very well, that is what they say in the marketplace. But who do you say that I am?” And Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”—not of Zeus or Apollo, but of the living God. “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah—blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah—for flesh and blood have not revealed this to you.” In other words, you did not say these things of yourself, “but My Father” revealed them to you: that I am the Son of God, that I am true God of true God.
"Upon this rock," He says. "I am changing your name: from Simon, the unsteady one, I am naming you Cephas" — which, translated, means Peter, that is, a rock. And "upon this rock" — not upon Peter himself, but upon the confession he made, upon that unshakable, rock-solid foundation of the faith, the faith in the divinity of Jesus — "I will build My Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it."
A person ought, then, to know these things. And I want you to understand that this practice is nothing new, so that when we find ourselves having to answer these deceivers, we will not be at a loss. This gathering in one accord—this assembly, this council—did not begin with the First Ecumenical Council.
No. In the Acts of the Apostles themselves, five apostolic councils had already taken place. There were doctrines approved by the Apostles and the priests, which they delivered to the Churches: “This is what you shall do; this is how you shall baptize; this is what you shall believe; this is what you shall preach.”
I shall read to you from the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 16, verse 4: “As they went through the cities”—as the Apostles passed through the cities—“they delivered to them the decrees to keep, which had been decided,” which had been approved, “by the Apostles and the priests in Jerusalem.”
It is in Holy Scripture—do you hear what those cunning people say? Five councils are found within Holy Scripture itself, in the Acts of the Apostles. The First Ecumenical Council came later, in the time of the Fathers. Before that, the Apostles had already met five times to deal with other matters that concerned them.
They met so that they might reach a sound judgment and determine whether what was being said was right. For the saying I mentioned to you always applies: “Where two or three are gathered”—and more is better still—but at least two or three are necessary, “there am I in the midst of them.”
Otherwise, what you are saying is your own words; I am not in the midst. So these councils came about in the Holy Spirit.
I believe that on another occasion, in a different talk, we have spoken about the miracles of the First Ecumenical Council. But since it is relevant now, let me tell you a few that I remember. The first miracle, when the Council was beginning, was performed by one of its Fathers, Saint Achillius.
His feast was the day before yesterday, May 15, together with another Saint. What was the other one called? Paisios? Macarius? No, something like that. Pachomius. Together with Saint Pachomius, on the fifteenth, the day before yesterday. They came into conflict with Arius. Arius, you might say, is the father of today’s Jehovah’s Witnesses—the millenarians who call themselves Jehovah’s Witnesses.
From that time onward they have denied Christ’s divinity, and they continue to do so today. Saint Achillius and Arius came into conflict in the hall and began debating even before the formal session had started. Saint Achillius said to him, “If your teaching that Christ is not God is true,”
“and that He is not one Person of the Holy Trinity. And the Three are not One and the One is not Three, a Mystery your human reason cannot grasp—then, if your teaching is true, speak to this stone.”
Tell this stone here to pour out oil. Arius was left frozen stiff, without a word to say.
He turned the challenge back on Saint Achillius and said, “You tell it.”
Arius evaded the challenge: “You make it bring forth oil.” And indeed, in the name of the Holy Trinity, Saint Achillius made oil flow from the stone. This was the first miracle, before the Council had even begun. Did Arius come to his senses? No, he did not—not even to the end. For when we speak of heresy, a person who can bring himself to speak openly against Christ has the devil within him; he is a heretic. He may make the sign of the Cross, go to Church, and carry candles, but if in his heart he dares refuse to confess Christ as God, he has Satan within him. You are speaking with the devil himself, and Satan does not repent.
This is why the Apostle says, “No one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.”
And no one can claim to have the Holy Spirit if he does not confess that Christ came in the flesh—that He was God and became man. Such a person does not have the Holy Spirit either.
The Council moved forward, and there was a great deal of debate; the fathers gathered there were learned men. Saint Nicholas was learned, and Arius was the most learned of all — and the most satanic. And he had a companion with him, another man who was a very satan among satans when it came to his tongue.
They spoke for days, one presenting his arguments and the other presenting his own, and there was no end to it. Each refuted the other. Then the bishop of Trimythous, Saint Spyridon—a humble and uneducated man—prayed to our Christ to show him a way.
And through him, a way was found. That evening, after they had returned from the Council and said their prayers, he told his deacon to go to bed and to wake him early in the morning. I do not know why he needed to rise so early. The deacon went to his room, and Saint Spyridon went to his own.
The deacon had forgotten to tell him something. So a little while later he goes back and opens the door to speak to him. Of course, the Saint had not yet lain down to sleep. And he found him on his knees, praying. He withdrew very quietly, closed the door, and went away.
It wasn't anything urgent. In the morning he got up and went to wake him. He goes in and finds him in the very same place he had left him the night before, still praying. But the door gave a creak; the elder heard it and jumped up. "You told me last night to wake you," the deacon says to him, and so they go on.
“Yes, come here. Go,” he told him, “to a low house where you can reach a roof tile. Bring me a tile—or, if you cannot get a whole one, bring me a piece of one. God bless you.” So he set out, found a roof tile, and brought it back to him.
He took the tile and tucked it inside his little cassock. Then they went to the Council. When they arrived there,
The discussion resumed where it had left off the day before. Saint Spyridon asked if he might speak. But after so many had spoken with such eloquence and learning, and so forth, were they now going to let Saint Spyridon—the uneducated man, as we would say—take the floor? No one gave him permission to speak.
In fact, they were pushing him to back down and not to ask for the floor. "If he gets us into trouble here, we're finished." And what is he going to go and say now? Nothing. But he insisted that he too be given the floor. The other fathers would not give it to him, so he turned to Constantine the Great, who was the president of the Council, and who was sitting on a seat, on an ordinary chair, not on a throne.
And according to the Council’s rules, he too had to be given the floor, so that he could say whatever he had to say.
He was given permission to speak. The others were sorry that he had been given the floor, fearing that the Council’s work would now go backward instead of forward. He stepped into the center and called Arius. “You, the leader, come here,” he said, and brought him into the middle.
Then he pulled the roof tile from his pocket. No theological arguments, nothing of the sort. He said to him, “Arius, in the name of the Father.” And as soon as he said, “in the name of the Father,” fire came out of the tile and rose upward.
Everyone froze. 'And of the Son, Arius' — and water runs out and falls to the ground. 'And of the Holy Spirit, Arius' — and earth is left in his hand. Everyone froze. No theologizing, nothing at all. He goes on: 'In the name of the Father, Arius — fire upward; of the Son, Arius — water downward; and of the Holy Spirit, Arius — the tile in his hand.' Everyone froze.
This is the origin of the hymn to Saint Spyridon: “You were revealed as a champion of the First Council and a wonderworker, O God-bearing Spyridon, our father.” That is where it comes from. And Arius then said, “Words are human, but this deed is the Lord’s.”
Did he believe? He did not. Satan does not repent. Some people are truly foolish to occupy themselves with heretics, thinking they can bring them back.
They are wasting their time. Satan is making fools of them, because they could be using that time to help some other sinner—not a heretic, but a sinner—and lead him to Christ. That is why Paul says, “Reject a heretical man after a first and second admonition.” Do not waste your time. Do not let Satan deceive you into occupying yourself with people who simply delay you, causing you to do fruitless work and waste your time when you could be helping others come to Christ.
That was the second miracle that took place there. The third miracle is connected with Saint Nicholas. You know, Saint Nicholas was a spirited man. Although he was meek, as his dismissal hymn says—“an image of meekness”—his blood nevertheless rose there. Unable to restrain himself before Arius’s distortion of the truth, he struck him so hard on the head that, as we say, Arius saw stars.
But this should not have happened, because the law was that physical violence was forbidden. If you had something to say, you were to say it. Indeed, because it happened in the emperor’s presence, the Canons normally required that the hand with which he struck Arius be cut off.
His opponents demanded that this be done—that his hand be cut off.
Those who were more inclined toward reconciliation intervened and said, “Let us not interrupt the Council. Let us merely strip him of his episcopal rank and put him in prison. When the Council is over, then we shall cut off his hand.” His opponents agreed to this.
So they stripped him of his priesthood, and now you see Saint Nicholas in prison as a layman. But there in the prison our Lord visited him, together with our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos. And they say to him, "What are you doing here, Nicholas?" He answers, "For love of You, Lord, I am here."
And our Lady the Theotokos gives him the omophorion, the bishop's stole. And our Lord gives him the Gospel book. They blessed him and left. A friend of his had heard that Nicholas was in prison. And he took him a little food there. He'd been defrocked, and all the rest of it.
And when he went to see him, he found him sitting there comfortably, wearing an omophorion and reading from the Gospel. What a strange sight! They said he had been stripped of his episcopal vestments, so how did he have a Gospel and an omophorion? What was going on? Then the truth came to light: what people had done wrong here on earth, Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos had gone and set right inside the prison.
That is why, if you have seen an icon of Saint Nicholas, Christ appears in the upper part on one side and the Most Holy Theotokos on the other. And if you have noticed that he prominently holds the Gospel here, it is because Christ gave it to him; and he prominently wears the omophorion because the Most Holy Theotokos gave it to him. Three miracles.
In other words, his hand had been sanctified—as though the Lord were saying to him, “Your hand, which struck that unbridled mouth of Satan, is sanctified.” There is also another, a fourth miracle, performed by a certain Kourdounis. I do not know that miracle, but it is part of the tradition. Four miracles took place at the First Ecumenical Council.
So when the Holy Spirit sets His seal upon it and says, “I am with you,” who are you, O man, to say otherwise? And what reason would God have to deceive us and let us believe wrongly? We have no excuse. We cannot believe in whatever way suits us. We must believe rightly. All the other councils likewise had their miracles and bore clear signs of the finger of the Holy Spirit, showing that He was overseeing their proceedings.
Let me tell you one more incident, which most of you may already know. It concerns the Holy Spirit and a matter taken up by the Fourth Ecumenical Council, because an archimandrite named Eutyches was saying that He is not God. That Council was then held in Constantinople. In the Church of the Holy Apostles there are many complete relics of saints, and among them are the relics of Saint Euphemia.
Take the case of Saint Euphemia. The two sides came into conflict: “It is not so; it is this way. No, it is not; yes, it is,” and so on. Then the proposal was made that each side should set down its teaching on a sheet of paper: “This is what we believe.” The other side would do the same, and both sides agreed.
They would open the reliquary of Saint Euphemia and place both documents together in her hands. Then, after three days of prayer, they would open it again, and the Saint—or rather, the Lord through the Saint—would show which confession He approved and where the truth of the faith lay.
And that is exactly what happened. They locked and sealed it under guard, with each side keeping its own key. On the third day they returned, brought the keys together, and opened the reliquary. They saw one document rolled up at her feet and the other held in her hands.
The one in her hands was the scroll of the Orthodox. That is where her troparion, her hymn, comes from, the one that says: «Greatly didst thou gladden the Orthodox and put to shame those of false belief, O Euphemia, fair virgin of Christ. For thou didst confirm the acts of the Fourth Council, which the Fathers had rightly laid down as dogma.»
And if you look at the icon of the Saint, you will see a scroll rolled up at her feet. That belongs to the heretics. You will also see another scroll in her hands. That belongs to the Orthodox. This, then, is Orthodoxy: the faith of Christ crucified.
The faith of the Crucified One also has outward signs and outward testimonies — the kind that help a person, if that person truly wants to believe rightly. In Orthodoxy there is always a miracle accompanying it. Take what we were saying in the evening about the Lord's pierced side, when we spoke about the light that comes forth above the All-Holy Tomb, the Sepulchre that belongs to the Orthodox. What is that? What more do we want? What other testimony do we need, when we have this one before the eyes of the whole world?
And this Christ declares, “Here is the light.” It does not come forth at the tomb claimed by the Protestants, because the Protestants have fashioned a Golgotha of their own elsewhere, outside the city, on a hill. Nor does it come forth for the Roman Catholic, the Armenian, the Abyssinian, or any other denomination.
Or rather, it comes forth from the tomb only for the Orthodox. So who are you and I to correct Him and say, “Christ, You have made a mistake about Your religion”? “Have I established the wrong faith, or have you been left outside in the darkness and taken the wrong road?”
One of these councils, then, is the First Ecumenical Council, which addressed the divinity of Jesus Christ. At that time they established the first eight articles of the Creed: “I believe in one God,” and “in our Lord Jesus Christ,” and so forth—the first eight articles.
The remainder—the other four articles, which speak of the Holy Spirit—was addressed later. Other councils completed the rest of our Creed. And it is necessary for a person both to believe rightly and to act rightly.
That is exactly why our Church reminds us to watch carefully whether we believe rightly, and whether the road we have taken is the right one. After the Creed has been recited in church, the priest's voice is heard saying: "Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear." What does that mean?
Why does the Church say this? So that we may stand rightly, stand well, and stand with the fear of God in the twelve articles of the faith — the ones we just recited so quickly.
Some have sought, and still seek, to alter these things. Let me give you just one word so that you may understand what is involved and how the devil works through his people. You know that the Creed says that Christ was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
You remember it, do you not? Under Pontius Pilate.
Who crucified Him under Pontius Pilate? The Jews crucified Him.
In order to remove this accusation, they have changed the Greek word epi, meaning “in the time of,” into hypo, meaning “by”: “crucified by Pontius Pilate.” In other words, Pilate crucified Him, not us. Try to notice it: epi has become hypo. It seems like nothing, yet it shows how exact and subtle a matter Orthodoxy is.
To remove from the Jews the responsibility of being killers of Christ and killers of God, they alter the wording. Then, when they preach to others, they can say, “See, even the Orthodox say that this was done by Pontius Pilate.”
It was done by Pontius Pilate; it was not done by us.
It comes from us, and yet we fail to grasp even this fine point. You know that Saint Athanasius the Great spent twenty years in exile, going from one place of exile to another and suffering, as he struggled to prevent a single iota from being inserted into the word homoousios—“consubstantial.” Just one letter. All the heretics wanted Christ to be called homoiousios with the Father—“of similar essence”—by placing an iota next to the omicron: “homoiousios with the Father.”
“Through whom all things were made.” They wanted the Creed to say that the Son is homoiousios with the Father—of a similar essence—not homoousios, consubstantial with the Father. He resembles the Father, but is not of the same essence. Do you understand where this leads?
The Church struggled for twenty years over that single iota. I am telling you these things to give you some idea of how greatly the Church has struggled to preserve the true faith, which we ourselves fail to cherish. And often we hear many Christians say, “Well, are they not human beings too? Are they not Christians? Do you mean that so many millions will be lost?” They begin handing out salvation generously. Have you yourself been saved, that you are now concerning yourself with everyone else?
If even the righteous are scarcely saved, as Paul says, where will the others go? The test is the certificate of authenticity; their banknote is counterfeit.
People are not saved by their works. Faith comes first: right belief and right practice.
If a person were saved by works alone, the rich ought to be the first to enter Paradise. They do good works and should simply be admitted. But it is not so. A person must believe, and not for a single moment let his nous, his spiritual intellect, turn away from Christ’s divinity.
Besides this, the others do not truly believe. Let them say and insist that they hold fast to Christ and so forth; they do not hold fast to Him.
Do you know what the Pope is called in the Papal Church? Do you know? The representative of God, you see. I once heard that expression here as well. The other day, a taxi driver was taking me out to Aigaleo—I was going there to speak on Sunday morning—and he said to me, “These representatives of God have done great harm to the Church.” I told him, “There are no representatives of God. God is everywhere present and fills all things. To speak of a representative of God implies that the actual person is absent.”
“I take His place.” No, I told him; he is an instrument—and a rusty one.
So he turned around and looked at me. I sat there for a quarter of an hour and did not get out, because he himself would not leave. And I explained this whole matter to him. The Pope, then, is saying, “He is a representative. We do not have God here; I am the one in charge.”
That is why he lowered the cross onto his foot, onto his slipper, and people kiss it there. And that is why he believes that, while seated upon his throne, he speaks through the Holy Spirit—that he is God.
This is true. Christ said, “And behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Yet those who claim to be so zealous for God—you see that they do not believe Him. They have shut God away, sent Him off on holiday, and now they represent Him themselves.
Let me tell you something else.
Let me tell you something else. The Roman Catholics believe in the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy)—they make a great show of their devotion to her. Mary is a great matter to them, so much so that they have even included her among the fingers of the hand with which they make the sign of the Cross. Do they not? Have they not made the Most Holy Theotokos into God? You know that Roman Catholics make the sign of the Cross with five fingers, and in the opposite direction. What are those five fingers? Do you know what they symbolize? Three are the Holy Trinity, the fourth is the Most Holy Theotokos, and the fifth is the Pope—as though they were all gods. Is the Most Holy Theotokos God? Someone might say, “Am I doing her wrong by exalting her?” Certainly—just as the Protestant does her wrong by bringing her down.
One side brings her down and makes her merely a woman—a good woman, a Mary, a virgin—while the Papist raises her too high. But the dignity of our Most Holy Theotokos does not lie in making her God, which she is not, nor is she merely a woman.
The worth of our Panagia is that she stands at the right hand of the Lord, just as the prophet saw her a thousand years before Christ: "The queen stood at Thy right hand." And just as the Orthodox Church takes out the portion for her today and places it in the artophorion, the vessel that holds the Bread, at the right hand of the Lord.
Nor is she God, because if she were God, her virtues would have no value.
Do you understand what Satan does?
Satan’s aim is to remove her from her proper place: either to cast her above it or to cast her below it, but never to let her remain where she belongs. For the dignity of our Most Holy Theotokos lies precisely in her proper place—there at the right hand of the Lord, interceding for us.
So when he makes her God, how then can Jesus be God?
If you came as God, then you had an immaculate conception. But I would want you to be human and to come here bearing ancestral sin. Would God keep you a virgin? You would be drinking and so forth. How, then, could this new one be God—especially if you were now presenting yet another one?
The Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Annunciation—the Annunciation, the Annunciation—there we are told what took place. The Most Holy Theotokos is not God; to make her a new god would consequently give us two immaculate conceptions.
We have two: we don't have only Christ without ancestral sin, we have the Panagia, the All-Holy Virgin, as well. But she herself disproves this claim of theirs: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.”
How, then, could I follow them? And yet so many people go over there. I would also like to speak to you about the matter of Ananon here. They claim to be zealous for Christ. And ordinary people—those who have not studied and those who are indifferent—believe that Protestants, the so-called Evangelicals and the rest, believe in Christ and in the Holy Trinity.
Do they seriously believe in Christ as God? They do not believe it. Oh, they make a great show of zeal for Christ. They can be as zealous as they like, but they do not believe it. Whom did she give birth to? Did she not give birth to God? Did she not give birth to Emmanuel, God with us? And if a woman gave birth to God, what will she be called? She will be called Theotokos, the one who gave birth to God. But no, they say, she gave birth to Christ — do you follow? Christotokos, the one who bore Christ, not Theotokos, the one who bore God. And so it follows: if she did not give birth to God, then Christ is not God. But if Christ is God, then the woman who gave birth to Him has to be the Theotokos. I don't think I'm speaking Chinese to you; I'm saying it in plain Greek. Do you understand?
And the Holy Spirit exposed this Protestant error through Saint Gregory the Theologian as early as the third century. Do you know what Saint Gregory the Theologian says?
“If anyone does not acknowledge Mary as Theotokos, he is estranged from the divinity.” Whoever does not accept Mary as Theotokos, he says, does not possess the true faith in the divinity either. He is an antichrist. Do you understand? And let us realize that we are only a handful, that little flock to whom the Kingdom of Heaven has been given.
What is good is not determined by the majority. Christ is not decided by a vote. And even among these Orthodox Christians—with Synods, Ecumenical Councils, these sacred forms, the Fathers, the Gospel, and Tradition—even among them, eighty percent will be condemned to Hell.
Few are those who will endure, preserve their faith correctly, and act rightly. Few, very few, He says, are being saved. Your concern is not exactly how many there are. See to it that you enter through the narrow gate.
So let us not treat this matter loosely, for heaven itself is at stake; let us take proper care. I told you one evening that a monk under Saint Paisios once went down to the city to sell his handiwork. On the road, a Jewish man approached him and began telling him that Christ is not God, that the Messiah had not come, and so on and so forth.
The young monk did not know very much from the Scriptures. Instead of avoiding the discussion, he tried to escape it in a way that caused great harm. The Jewish man cornered the monk so thoroughly that, simply to get away from him, the monk said, “All right, perhaps He is not.”
In other words, perhaps Christ is not God. The monk went into the city, sold his handiwork, and returned to the monastery that evening. He went to make a prostration before the abbot and say, “I have returned; your blessing,” and the rest.
The door was shut. And the instruction had already been given: “He is not to come inside.”
For the monk knew that the elder was a man of virtue.
He would grow in virtue alongside him. “Did you see something bad in him?” He began examining his own life. “I did nothing wrong down in the city. I was careful—not a word, not a deed, nothing.” Why, then? There was no reason. Yet the elder would not receive him. He began to weep outside, and the others took pity on him and intervened. “Receive him, at least, and let him tell you what is troubling him.” “What harm do you think there could be? Because I think he has treated this man unjustly.” In the end, the elder gave in and received him. “I know nothing about it. I do not understand you, Geronta,” he said.
"So," he says, "maybe Christ isn't God after all, huh?" And that's when the elder starts in on him: "This morning, when you were going down with the Jew — what did the two of you talk about on the road? And how did your conversation end? And what was it you said at the end?"
“So Christ may not be God?” The monk froze. And the elder performed the blessing of water, sprinkled him with the holy water, and anointed him. Do you understand? All because of one word. He performed the blessing of water, sanctified him, and anointed him—all because of one word.
If you do not know, keep silent. Do not express an opinion. Do not make yourself holier than the Councils and the Fathers. You are not required to know everything; but if you do not know, do not lead someone else astray. Say, “I do not know; go further and find someone who knows the matter exactly.”
Of course. It's the same thing the heretics do. When the heretics don't know something, they take you to the one above them. They pack you off to the chief Beelzebul, the big man, the teacher. They themselves say nothing at all. Wherever they stumble, they send you up to the one above them.
That is not what we do. And so let this day, the day after tomorrow, bring us to our senses. Let us take it to heart. Of course, this day is bound up with all of this. Because all of those men were vessels of the Holy Spirit. And God made His message known through them. He showed us His mercy through the Apostles and through these holy men.
Some of them wrote, and others interpreted what was written. For us, the work is already finished. All we have to do is bend over it, study it closely, and take what is there. Theology today adds up to nothing. It is just cleverness: "Look how smart this man is." What you should be doing is taking from what Christ has already prepared for you, and serving it to people at their spiritual tables, so that they may become true people of God.
There is no need for philosophy. Nor do we need to go and study under Protestants and Roman Catholics in order to learn Orthodoxy. The light comes from the East. Over there, we shall supposedly learn that the Most Holy Theotokos is not a virgin.
There we shall learn that Christ may not be God. We shall learn that the Saints do not exist, and that Satan does not exist. Weep for those who go to the West to learn theology.
Let them go there to learn a craft—and only in matters concerning the physical world: some technical occupation, perhaps machinery. But for theology, one must go to the East, to the Holy Mountain, or to Sinai; one must read and pray.
He must open the writings of the Fathers and learn what the neptic Fathers teach, what the other Fathers of theoria and divine contemplation teach, and what they all say, so that he may learn Orthodoxy.
No one is saved outside Orthodoxy. Millions of people have passed before the All-Holy Sepulchre up to the present day.
At the Holy Sepulchre. Who came to believe, and who returned transformed? Did Christ water down the wine? Did He alter anything? Did He speak in half-truths? Not at all—not for anyone, ever. His way is to give and to keep giving. That is why we must pray. We have work to do, my beloved: the work of right faith and right praxis, the active ascetic life. This Sunday, listen closely to the prayer Christ offered, the High-Priestly Prayer in the seventeenth chapter of John. See what words He spoke there—whether anything like them had ever been said or heard before.
“I have finished the work which You gave Me to do,” He says. Who among us can say such a thing? Who among us has even begun to labor for his soul, to sew its garment? We have not yet even obtained the cloth—much less cut it, basted it, sewn it, or tried it on. Nothing has been done. Not even one effort has yet been made toward the garment of the human soul.
Man, naked and laid bare, fallen from Paradise, takes no interest in the garment of his soul. He simply does not care. Christ says, “I have finished the work which You gave Me to do.” Paul said this as well.
"I have finished the race, I have kept the faith; and now the crown of righteousness is laid up for me." Symeon the God-Receiver said the same thing: "Now, Master, You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word, for my own eyes have seen Your salvation."
But what are we doing? We possess the true faith; we possess these pearls, and so much else. What are we doing with them? We act as though none of this mattered. Yet perhaps you believe that these things have meaning and can, in some way, help us.
You may say to me, “These things you are telling us are difficult.” Yes, that is true. We claim that the world, the tares, and the demons will not leave us alone. Do you want to withdraw from the world? You can withdraw.
Do you not want to leave? Then remain in the world and struggle here. Christ offered a special prayer for us. He said, “Lord”—speaking to His Father—“those whom You have given Me, I want You to keep them. I do not ask You to take them out of the world.”
“But keep them here, within the world, from the evil one.” The evil one, then, will always be present. Ask Christ for strength, so that you may struggle against the ruler of this world. If you do not wish to remain in this world, and want to go somewhere apart, where there is no worldly distraction, where you do not see the temptations of the flesh or encounter such things, then go. But if you cannot do that, you must remain here and struggle rightly and faithfully, so that tomorrow you may receive your reward and hear: “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things; I will set you over many. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” May we all enter into that joy, through the intercessions of the Holy Fathers. Amen.
Amen.

Πώς θα γίνει αυτό, το μυστήριο της Θείας Ευχαριστίας; Έρχεται το άλλο σκέλος της Παραδόσεως και λέει: «Έτσι θα γίνει». Είναι αρκετό, λοιπόν, το να σου δώσω ένα μπουκάλι που είναι φάρμακο, αλλά να μη σου δώσω ερμηνευμένη τη συνταγή;
Αύριο τι θα δείτε την Κυριακή, όταν φτιάχνει με λίγο χώμα και με λίγο σάλιο μάτι. Τι θα δείξει; Τα φτιάχνουν άνθρωποι;
Η πίστη του Εσταυρωμένου έχει και σημεία εξωτερικά και μαρτυρίες εξωτερικές, τέτοιες που βοηθάνε τον άνθρωπο, εάν θέλει να πιστέψει σωστά. Πάντοτε παρακολουθεί θαύμα στην Ορθοδοξία. Όπως όταν μιλούσαμε το βράδυ περί της πλευράς του Κυρίου, που μιλήσαμε για το φως το οποίο βγαίνει επάνω από τον Πανάγιο Τάφο των Ορθοδόξων. Αυτό τι είναι; Τι άλλο θέλουμε; Τι μαρτυρίαν άλλην έχουμε ανάγκη, όταν έχουμε αυτό ενώπιον όλου του κόσμου;
Γι' αυτό και ακριβώς η Εκκλησία μας μάς υπενθυμίζει να προσέχουμε αν πιστεύουμε σωστά και αν ο δρόμος που έχουμε πάρει είναι σωστός. Μετά την απαγγελία του Πιστεύω στην Εκκλησία, ακούγεται μέσα από τον ιερέα και λέει: «Στῶμεν καλῶς, στῶμεν μετὰ φόβου». Τι είναι αυτό;
Διού τα πάντα γένοντο. Αυτοί ήθελαν να γίνει ομοιούσιος τω Πατρί. Είναι όμοιος, όχι από την ίδια ουσία. Του μοιάζει. Κατάλαβες πού πάει;
20 χρόνια πάλεψε για αυτό το γιώτα. Αυτά σας τα λέγω, να σας δώσω μια όψη το πόσο έχει αγωνιστεί η Εκκλησία για να κρατήσει τη σωστή, την οποία εμείς δεν την προσέχουμε. Και ακούμε πολλές φορές πολλούς χριστιανούς: «Ε, μα δεν είναι άνθρωποι κι αυτοί; Δεν είναι χριστιανοί; Θα μου πεις, τόσα εκατομμύρια θα πάνε χαμένοι;» Αρχίζουν τα κουβαρνταλίκια. Έχεις σωθεί εσύ και ενδιαφέρεσαι τώρα για τους άλλους, ε;
Το καταλαβαίνετε τι κάνει ο Σατανάς;
Όταν την κάνει λοιπόν αυτός Θεό, άρα πώς θα 'ναι ο Ιησούς Θεός;
Σοβαρά πιστεύουν στον Χριστό ως Θεό; Δεν το πιστεύουν. Αυτοί κόπτονται για τον Χριστό. Μπορούν να κόπτονται, αλλά δεν το πιστεύουν. Ποιον έτεκε; Δεν έτεκε Θεόν, δεν έτεκε τον Εμμανουήλ, τον μεθ' ημών Θεόν; Εφόσον έτεκε Θεόν μια γυναίκα, τι θα λέγεται; Θα λέγεται Θεοτόκος. Όχι, έτεκε Χριστόν, καταλάβατε; Χριστοτόκος, όχι Θεοτόκος. Κατά συνέπεια, εφόσον δεν έτεκε Θεόν, ο Χριστός δεν είναι Θεός. Αν ο Χριστός είναι Θεός, εκείνη που τον έτεκε πρέπει να είναι Θεοτόκος. Δεν πιστεύω να σας τα λέω κινέζικα· σας τα λέω ελληνικά. Τα καταλαβαίνετε;
Και τον έχει αυτόν τον Προτεσταντισμό συλλάβει το Πνεύμα το Άγιον διά του Αγίου Γρηγορίου του Θεολόγου από τον τρίτον αιώνα. Ξέρετε τι λέγει ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος;
Αμ
