Summary
Dimitrios Panagopoulos expounds the liturgical prayer entrusting all life and hope to Christ, with references to Isaiah 49:15-16, 1 Peter 5:7, John 19:10, 1 John 1:7, Hebrews 2, and 1 Corinthians 11:28. He interprets the prayer as total surrender, not a selective request for help while retaining self-rule, and identifies self-interest as the obstacle. Holy Communion is presented as obligatory and transformative, with eighteen graces from the Liturgy of Saint Basil contrasted with the loss incurred by abstention. The homily links confession and communion as washing and rinsing, requires a pure conscience, and cites Cyril of Alexandria, Gregory of Nyssa, and John Chrysostom on the true Body and Blood of Christ.

There, within the service, the priest offers a prayer of his own, personal of course, yet in a way
общая as well, which says the following: To You we entrust our entire life and hope, Master who loves mankind, and we beseech You and pray and implore You: count us worthy to partake of Your heavenly and awesome Mysteries, of this sacred and spiritual table, with a pure conscience, for the remission of sins, for the forgiveness of transgressions, for communion of the Holy Spirit, for the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven,
for boldness toward You, and not for judgment or condemnation. It is a prayer of preparation, as we were saying, for Holy Communion. Here, indeed, it lists the graces that a person who partakes of Holy Communion receives. Basil the Great, in his own Divine Liturgy, names eighteen graces that a person receives from his partaking of Holy Communion. Consequently, a person who does not partake of Holy Communion loses those eighteen,
even if he receives the antidoron, even if he stays until the very end. The words are telling, he says: 'To You we entrust our entire life and hope.' We pray this again and again, because we, in truth, do not surrender this existence of ours. We hold back the last part of it. Yes, we ask, but there is always that 'but' in us, holding us back from surrendering to Him completely. There is a beautiful parallel here, material and spiritual. Here He asks for complete surrender. 'But I am only human.'
'Make a move, so that I may move you,' He says. People who swim in the sea, when they grow very tired, at a certain moment fall onto their backs and stop struggling; they surrender completely to the sea, and the sea does not tire them, it rests them, it holds them up. That so-called 'drowner of strong swimmers' does not wear you out, because you let yourself go. So it is with Christ: if you surrender to Him, if you say to Him, 'I leave everything to You,' what do you imagine? You imagine you cannot bring it to a good end.
But what gnaws at us, what leads us not to surrender to Christ, is that Christ will not take us along the road we ourselves want to travel. We have our egoism, we have our self-interests, we have the flesh. If we go with the Cross in hand and say to Him, 'Do whatever You will, ' then where will the applause be, where the glories, where the money, where all of that? We will lose them, and we live only once;
we want to taste the whole world, and that is where we ruin it. We want dear Christ for our health, of course; we want Him to make our loved ones well; we want Him to help us in our affairs; but not for Him to tell us how we are to live, whether we will have a dance at the house tonight, whether we will play cards, whether we will go here or there. That is exactly where we get tangled up. And the Church says again and again, 'Let us entrust our entire life to Christ our God.' When a person surrenders to Christ, Christ takes charge of his protection.
Angels encamp around him. Have you ever seen a military encampment, how some men sleep in the tent while others stand guard all around them, keeping the watches, so that the rest may sleep? This is exactly what happens with the Christian. And Peter, in his catholic epistle, says: 'Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.' You sleep, while He, so to speak, is at work, in human terms, over how He will help you in your circumstances, because you entrusted them to Him. Many say that they have entrusted everything, but they have not.
For every case there is a file. Go to a lawyer, if you have one, and you will see that for your case he keeps a file. And if you have a second case, he keeps a second file, and a third case, a third file. And inside that file are all the supporting documents, the points for and against, which you handed over for him to take on. If you give him only half and keep the rest for yourselves, your case is lost in advance, for one thing. And for another, if he has a conscience, he will not take it on,
because either you give it to me to take charge of, or take these back too and go to whomever you trust. This, then, is what must become living faith in a person. When Christ says, 'I will never fail you, nor will I ever forsake you,' this must become faith. When God says, in the Old Testament through Isaiah, 'Your mother may forget you' — even if the whole neighborhood were to fall away, even if you yourself were to fall into the fire and be burned — 'yet I will never forget you; I hold you here in My hand, I have guarded you on every side, and I have inscribed you upon My palms.'
The faithful soul senses this; he feels this trust. He can be carried back to what happened when Christ was being tried, before Pilate, who said to Him, 'Do You not know that I have authority to release You and authority to crucify You?'
If a person came to ponder this, he would have great trust, and with much joy he would hand everything over and let it go. We are weary, beloved, you know it. We are weary. And Christ says, 'Come to Me, and I will give you rest. Give them to Me, and I will take them upon Myself.' And they do not give them to Me. An elder once told me, pointedly: 'Dimitris, two persons are out of work today, Christ and the devil. Christ, because we do not trust Him; and the devil,
because we have taken his place — we have grown more cunning than Satan himself.' It is the truth; examine it and you will see Christians utterly beaten down, with a Father in heaven and yet orphaned. You see Christians choked by the circumstances of this world, by events, by ill health, by such things, by want, and so on. By events, by ill health, by such things, by want, and so on. And what business have all these things to make a person miserable, downcast, distressed, and sorrowful? What business have these things at all? The immortal matter lies in the immortal soul.
There is the secret. Unless He takes charge — and when we do hand it over, will He not give us the things that are truly necessary? And when we say necessary, we do not mean those 'necessities' we invent for ourselves, the self-interested necessities. Someone will say, 'Is not a car necessary, so I can get about?' Of course it is necessary, and your private plane is necessary too, as you would have it. But He does not give it to you, because it is not for your good.
'Do what is for my benefit' — that is the prayer. And many times we sprout wings like ants, and if He gives us the slightest gust of air, we are lost. And He keeps us in humility, so that we may not be lifted up, so that we may stay moderate, as John Chrysostom says when he speaks of the temptations of Christ. That we may stay moderate — let everyone hold fast to this word. This, then, is one more reason on our part why we do not trust in Christ. 'Christ, yes, but...' ; 'the Church is good, but...'
; we do not leave things to Him: 'Take them, do whatever You will.' Because if one only considered death — where, then, is the threat of death? All our lives we are held guilty by the fear of death, as Paul says in Hebrews chapter two. If this fear of death were taken away from our midst — and for many of us it has not gone away. What will you do to me, mr. devil? Will you take my soul? You cannot take it from me.
My life you may be able to take from me, but my soul you will never be able to take. And even my life you cannot take now, unless you receive permission. If a man is meant to die, he dies; if he is not, he does not. But man does not say this, and right there Christ is blasphemed. We say, 'we entrust ourselves, we give it all to You, ' but it is a hollow lie — what would I really give You? This exposure, in fact, comes much earlier in the Liturgy, for at the point where it says, 'Save us, O Son of God, ' I could come down and ask you whether I will save you at all.
For that 'Save us, O Son of God' — do you want Me to save you? Will you do what I tell you? You will not. So you are mocking Me when you ask Me to save you. And I have no reason to save you, for look at the kind of man you are: unrepentant, unconfessed, keeping not a single commandment, carrying on with your old life, and yet you come here and follow along singing, 'save me.' And it is not only this inconsistency and blasphemy we speak of; it runs from the very beginning,
from the point where the Liturgy says 'and those who believe in Him.' From there it begins and indeed sets apart the responsibilities, that the Liturgy is celebrated for these, and these are the ones who will receive. These words, then, must be stamped upon us: 'To You we entrust our entire life and our hope.' Not to the dollar, not to the lira, not to property, not to health, nowhere — to You. Once I leave it to Him, everything else will fall into harmony with what truly benefits my soul and my body,
as much as is needed. Master, Lover of mankind — for He does everything out of love for man. Man does not deserve them; they are not wages owed to him. What Christ offers to man is love for mankind. Very rightly does he define Him and name Him so. 'And we beseech You and pray and implore' — three verbs, mind you. 'Count us worthy to partake of Your heavenly and awesome Mysteries, of this spiritual table of Yours' — who approaches, who is counted worthy. He asks for this: that He count him fully worthy,
not merely make him worthy, but count him worthy. He says this further on as well, in another place, in the Our Father. 'Count us worthy to partake of Your heavenly and awesome Mysteries, of this sacred and spiritual table.' 'Your heavenly things' — when the priest offered them and said, 'Your own of Your own we offer to You, ' he gave them to Him to bless, with a heavenly blessing, so that we might receive them — these good things that came down from heaven — that we might partake of them and become His own communicants. That is why he says 'heavenly blessing,
' and he no longer calls the table material; he calls it a spiritual table. For you see bread, yet it is body; you see wine, yet it is blood — strange indeed to many people, who have never pondered these things, how awesome they are and exactly how they come to pass. Many reject this matter, as I told you on another occasion — the Body and Blood of Christ in these instances. They see and taste bread, yet it is the Body of Christ;
they taste wine, yet it is the Blood of Christ. 'Having changed them by Your Holy Spirit' — these precious gifts were offered, but they were changed by the grace of the Holy Spirit. And just as a man changes the bread and the wine into his own body and blood, mysteriously, without knowing it — and the first thing the doctor will cut from him is the bread, so that he does not eat and gain weight — in exactly this way, by the same mysterious manner,
the bread is changed and the wine is changed; and insofar as we receive the bread, it becomes body, and insofar as we receive the wine, it becomes His blood. Allow me at this point to bring before you some thoughts of holy men, the way they express themselves. Cyril of Alexandria, for example, says the following. Of Him who said — that is, of Christ — 'This is My blood.' When Christ said, 'This is My blood' — what then? Did He ever hesitate, as though to say perhaps this is not blood?
Who has the boldness, when Christ says, 'This is My blood, ' who has the boldness to say that this is not the blood of Christ? Who, he says, dares to say such a thing?
He once changed water by His will — Cyril says that He once, by His command, changed water into wine, evidently at the wedding of Cana — and is He not trustworthy when He changed it into blood? How is it that He can make water into wine, but cannot make the wine into blood? Why could He not do it? You would have to reject the rest of the Gospel as well. If you reject this act of Christ, what then of your confession of faith? Saint Gregory of Nyssa, in one of his catechetical discourses,
says the following: 'The body, by the indwelling of God the Word, was transformed unto the divine dignity; having changed it by the Spirit, He transformed it. Rightly, then, even now do we believe that the bread which is sanctified by the Word of God is transformed into the Body of God the Word.' Very rightly does he say it came to pass. And John Chrysostom says: 'Since our discourse is about the body — as many of us as partake of the Body,
as many as taste of this Blood — understand that it differs in nothing from that one.' When he tells you 'body and blood, ' it differs in nothing from that Body and Blood of Christ. We do not partake of something separate or different in this partaking; rather, it is that One who is seated on high, who is worshipped by the angels, who is near to the undefiled power — it is of Him that we taste. He is speaking about that One, not about another, about that real One: 'this is my body.'
That is the body, He says, that we must keep in mind we are communing with. And in his homily to the Ephesians, John Chrysostom himself says: 'Christ is present even now, adorning the table.' This table, he says, Christ beautifies and adorns with His presence. For it is not a man who makes what is set before us become the Body and Blood of Christ; the priest stands only fulfilling a role. The priest is an instrument, and he offers the prayer of supplication. But the grace and the power are God's, who works all things. 'This is my body,' He says;
this word transforms what is set before us. And the same Chrysostom continues in a homily on the betrayal of Judas, saying: When you see the Lord sacrificed and laid out, and the priest standing over the sacrifice and praying — the priest, he says, praying over that sacrifice, over Christ who becomes a sacrifice for us — and all of them reddened with the precious blood, all of them crimsoned by this blood of the sacrifice, do you then suppose that you are still among the things of men and that you stand upon the earth?
Do you imagine these are earthly things and that you are here below? No — he says you are at once carried up to the heavens, and casting out every fleshly thought of the soul, with a bare soul and a pure intellect you behold the things of heaven. O the wonder! O the love of God for mankind! He who sits on high together with the Father — in that hour is held by the hands of all, and gives Himself to those who wish to embrace and enfold Him. He who is there is also here, and He gives Himself to those who desire it,
so that they may commune of Him, that they may receive Him. It is true that these things are, for us, somehow beyond our grasp, incomprehensible; yet the holy ones, who had the grace of the Holy Spirit because of their holy life, grasped them and have left them to us in their own words, in their own way. Count us worthy, then — make us fully worthy — with a pure conscience to receive unto the forgiveness of sins, unto the pardon of transgressions, unto the communion of the Holy Spirit, and so on. With a pure conscience:
many come to their spiritual father to confess and do not tell him everything; they steal the prayer of absolution from him, and then go and commune. With the thought that, if they told him everything, he would not let them commune. They deceived him. But the conscience does not testify falsely; the conscience tells you that you should have said that too, it tells you that what you have done you must make right. How then is it possible? You do not submit these things to the priest's judgment, as many do, and they fall asleep thinking they have deceived their father.
I told you, you have a father, the priest — but you have another Father, a divine one, here within. The priest is a man, and he may have been mistaken, and you may have deceived him with your outward show of humility, with your tears, with whatever else, you deceived him. But here within there is a conscience. It asks whether the conscience is pure. That is why Paul says, let each one examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. That is why I once told you something that scandalized certain people:
Do not ask the priest whether you should commune. To the priest, take your sin. And if he does not assign you a penance, you will commune — provided, of course, that your conscience tells you that you are in order. Many ask whether they should commune, and they are told, go and commune. And often the person is not worthy to commune. His conscience still testifies against him about things within, that he is not in order. If the conscience testifies against him, let him not go to commune. The responsibility does not rest with the priest, it rests with you.
With a pure conscience, it says here too. Now, there are certain people who have lulled their conscience to sleep, who have so deadened it that it does not even stir, let alone lay a hand on them. What can I say — it is much. The conscience says, make this right, and they do not make the injustice right, they do not return what was stolen, what was wrongfully taken, the sweat, the blood, and so on, the honor and such things; instead they do good works, and they say, I did this, I wept for this, I did everything, and so a little spark of mercy says,
sit, sit, sit — and they go to commune. There is a respite, no; once the effect of that spark passes, the conscience will cry out again, 'it is not permitted,' you will never be at peace, you will never find rest, until Jonah falls into the sea, until the sin departs from within the whale — whatever it may be, fleshly, worldly, self-serving, whatever it may be — and then you will find rest, then. You will not be at peace otherwise; otherwise you find no rest. With a pure conscience, then, it says here.
That is why we see many people who have truly grasped this matter, and although up to the last moment they are ready to commune, in the end they do not approach. Something within draws them on and so forth, they could approach, and yet they do not approach. Because they are not set right with their conscience, they do not approach. These are better off than the others who would go forward even though their conscience told them they were not in order. It is better to be deceived and not approach than to approach and not be in order.
It is better. The self-examination must be twofold. Remember when God sent the angel to speak to Gideon, to raise an army to go to war. He asked the angel to work a miracle for him if he was sent from God. And the miracle was a great threshing floor, dry in the summer, with a fleece of wool in its midst. Truly, truly — imagine that, that I should go and
disgrace myself for a sweet, or let another disgrace me for a penny. Who is this? It is the conscience. It is, many times, an embassy in enemy territory that
is never recalled. When two states come into conflict, they recall their embassies. Christ never recalls His embassy. He leaves it there in the enemy territory. And sometimes this conscience, from down in the depths, beneath the weight of the heaps of sins, cries out, 'it is not permitted,' what you are doing is not right,
you will pay for it one day, there is justice, and so on — from down in the depths; and if you uncover it, you will hear its voice more clearly, because many have buried it down low. Always ask your conscience. That is why some say, put your hand on your heart, and if your heart holds it back, do it. It does not say if your reason holds it back, but if your heart holds it back, because that is where the throne is. There is no reason without a pure heart. The intellect is the instrument of the heart,
the fathers say, who were filled with grace. Consequently, if the heart is not pure, the intellect too functions poorly, defectively, and against one's own interest, and it harms one. Take care, then, of the conscience. With a pure conscience, it says. With a pure conscience, that we may come unto the forgiveness of sins. But I made my confession, the person says, and the priest said, unto the forgiveness of sins. You, O Lord, said, whatever you bind shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed; say it to these your servants.
What do I need this for, again unto the forgiveness of sins? Allow me to tell you that these two are connected. What do I need this for, again the forgiveness of sins? Allow me to tell you that these two are connected, for this soul to be washed. It is washed in two stages, as women do their washing: they soap and they rinse;
they never rinse without soaping, or after soaping they iron it and wear it. Confession is the washing, the soaping, and Holy Communion, the Blood of Christ that cleanses us from every sin, is the rinsing, it is the whitening; both of these are necessary. They are among the obligatory Mysteries —
repentance and confession together with Baptism, and likewise the Holy Eucharist. It is not like Holy Matrimony, not like Holy Orders, where, if I wish, I enter into marriage, or, if I wish, I become a clergyman. Here it is not 'if I wish' — I am bound to. So John has it very rightly in his first Catholic Epistle, in the first chapter, in verse seven, he says it just so: the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin. The one, then, prepares, and the other sets in order.
You can see this, moreover, vividly in the Parable of the Prodigal Son: with his first confession the father changed his robe, cleansed him, put a fine robe on him, and seated him at the fatted calf. What did he eat there? Who is the calf? The spotless one, Christ. He is pure. The son put on the robe first, and only then did he sit down at the table. He did not sit there in the garment of the pigsty, the garment of sin, of the world's worship of the flesh;
nor did his father let him sit until he had changed his clothing. He seated him at the table where the fatted Calf feasts everyone, as Saint Gregory says in one of his homilies on Pascha.
Saint Gregory says it, and so does Chrysostom. What I am telling you is exactly that. Yes, Chrysostom has it in his catechetical oration as well, you have seen it. So then: the forgiveness of sins, the pardon of trespasses, unto the communion of the Holy Spirit. Many people ask for the grace of the Holy Spirit. There is a gradation here; there are many cases. For you to receive this grace of the Holy Spirit, which is a special grace, not the grace that lets you interpret Scripture,
or pray, and so on, the first thing that flows from this grace is that it makes you kin of the Kingdom of Heaven. Now here is the great secret, and this is why people need to partake of this sacrifice: because it changes their blood, it changes their very being. From common they become new, from temporal they become eternal, from dust they become spiritual. That is the reason. A person cannot expect to inherit a
kingdom if he does not partake of the sacrifice, if he does not commune Christ; he cannot, because he remains mortal, and that is no kingdom of heaven for him; he is no king's child. For the Kingdom of Heaven is inherited, as you know: 'Come, inherit.' It is not the wage of works, it is not the wage of money; it is a matter of kinship. So for me to be a king's child, to have a claim to the kingdom, I must partake of this sacrifice of Jesus, because this is the very work Christ does: he makes us brothers by grace,
and by extension children of God by grace. And if I am a brother with Christ, I am a co- heir with him, joined to the natural heir whom God has, Christ. That is why it is necessary for me to partake of Holy Communion. And it goes on to put it here as follows: unto the communion of the Holy Spirit, unto the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven. Not a wage, an inheritance. The Kingdom of Heaven is inherited, and it is the kin who inherit. Not friends, not hired workers.
The kin. We must become children of God, and we will become children of God only if we become brothers of Christ. This is a discussion we will have when we come to the Our Father. So then: unto the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven, unto boldness before You, unto boldness before You. What does all this mean? Who is the one who can stand before the justice of God? Who is that one? And here as well.
Can this dust, man, stand before the justice of God, sheltered behind the Cross of Christ? To the Hebrews, Paul gives a comforting exhortation, and says: let us approach with boldness the throne of Grace and Mercy, that we may receive mercy, at the throne of Grace, not at the throne of Glory, at the throne of Grace. Christ clothes the once-naked descendant of Adam: as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
And so, the soldier's gear, as we used to call it, the soldier's gear of Christ, because the Church is an army on campaign, and with the crown of the Crosses, the Precious Crosses, I present myself before God the Father at the judgment. Otherwise I cannot present myself; he is the one who covers me, the one who shelters me, the one who presents me. That is why, if we want to have boldness toward him, we will go together with Christ; not I, but he, my Great Brother, while we who come after are his little brothers, since 'inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,
you did it to me.' These belong to my kin, and Christ will present us to the Father. So if a person does not have this blood of Christ, it is not possible, it is contrary to Christ, for him to stand and present himself. Let me take you back to the Old Testament to confirm this for you. When the expulsion was about to happen, the exodus, the bringing of the Hebrews out of Egypt, among the many blows he struck the Egyptians, he gave also this:
that an angel would pass through in the night and put to death all the firstborn of the Egyptians, from man to beast. If they had no children, they had an animal, and the animal would perish. Whereas in the houses of the Hebrews, who had been commanded to slaughter a lamb, to catch its blood and strike the upper part of the door, marking it from there as well, in the type of the Holy Trinity with the blood, the angel says he will not enter, but will pass over.
He did not say whether the person inside is good or bad. The angel will not enter. If there is blood on the door, he says, the angel will not strike. The blood of that lamb guarded the Hebrews from the destroying sword. And so the blood of this Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world, guards us and gives us boldness, makes us a person able to present ourselves. And when God treads forth, when the justice of God sees the blood of his own Son, with which we are made and dyed, it gives way. It turns into mercy now.
It no longer exacts justice. So Holy Communion creates this boldness. Basil the Great and Chrysostom both say it, in that beautiful prayer of compunction before first Holy Communion, each in his own words. It says: I am not fit, nor worthy, that you should enter under my roof, but taking courage I approach, taking courage I approach, because he said, let them be careful. Let them abandon the harm they
have suffered from various teachings. Let them set it aside. The Church is utterly opposed to these teachings that drive people away and bind them to limits and to days and to times and to seasons; let such people give their attention to Holy Communion. Saint Ambrose of Milan says it pointedly, like this:
he is speaking of the daily bread, the epiousion bread, to be received each day, and yet for almost a whole year we count ourselves unworthy of it. We become worthy on Holy Thursday, and the rest of the year we are not worthy. And how is it that we were not worthy on Holy Thursday and so ruined Pascha once again? And if we are spoiled all year long, how did we suddenly become worthy on Holy Thursday? So we are deceiving ourselves. And yet many have still not grasped this matter.
I say it again: many of you have taken this book we wrote, 'Antidote to Death.' Read it once more; you have set it aside; study it: what the Fathers say, what the Church says, what Scripture says, what Christ said, what Paul said. Because we set ourselves up against all this wrath, since the word that goes out of my mouth shall not return empty. He says this in Isaiah 55. When I invite you to what is good and you come up with excuses, you will have no blessing; you will have a curse. For God, Christ, tells us: you entered the temple, you appraised yourself. You entered the church; you took your own measure.
How, after that, do you present yourself as unworthy? There is no excuse, none at all. Let us take care to study these things, and little by little begin to make our Holy Communion more frequent. It is for our own good. Set your works aside; your works do not present you before God. It is the Blood of Christ. The provisions
are the first thing that will let you make the journey. With your own baggage alone, it will not carry you across. This is what comes out of this whole preparation.
Boldness, then. Count me worthy, he says, to receive it, the prayer. Not unto judgment, not unto condemnation. For one side of it is boldness, and the other is judgment, condemnation. It is a double-edged knife. It is not for a gold tooth, not for good luck, not for many years of life. What we too do before the Holy Chalice is a weighty thing. It is not just for this passing year. It has two faces, he says. It is for the Kingdom, for inheritance.
It makes you kin of Christ, and by extension a child of God; and if you do not attain it, then it becomes judgment or condemnation. Knowingly: you did not prepare yourself to commune, you did not make peace with those around you, you did not set right the wrongs you had done, you did not put a stop to the sins of the flesh, you did not go to Holy Confession, and so on. Then you did not receive the Body and Blood of Christ; you received bread and wine. Would that it were even so. A person never, in fact, receives bread and wine.
He receives Body and Blood. But the one who is not joined to it receives the forgiveness of sins, while the other receives eternal Hell, not discerning the Body and Blood of the Lord, as Paul says, writing to the Corinthians in the eleventh chapter. All this he prays inwardly, mystically, and many times over he does not grasp it; he hurries through quickly. What does it say there? What are these dread things he speaks of, these dread things? And when this is finished, once more he uses the words I told you:
not simply 'make worthy,' but 'count us fully worthy, Master, with boldness and without condemnation to dare to call upon You, ' to dare, to dare to call upon You, the heavenly God and Father, and to say, to call You Father, grant me this. And then he says that prayer, the so-called Lord's Prayer, the Our Father. This is a prayer indicated by Christ Himself, His own words, and its placement here serves above all one essential line: 'Give us this day our daily bread.' It is set here for the sake of that line alone. It is a great thing for a person to dare to say that he has a Father in heaven.
But this is a subject for us to take up further on. Have you ever given any thought to the matter of fatherhood? Many have not thought about it, so I would like to say that there are three fathers: one in heaven and two on earth, for the true Christian. The real father is the spiritual father here on earth; the other is the father according to the flesh, who, without the spiritual father,
accomplished nothing; he brought forth a person bound for Hell. The spiritual father intervenes: he takes the child up, receives it, baptizes it, and assumes the spiritual fatherhood. And as much as flesh differs from spirit, heaven from earth, light from darkness, by that much does the spiritual father, the godfather, the sponsor, differ from the father according to the flesh. And so, joy to the children who were blessed with
parents who sought out not the wealthy man, not the beautiful godmother, not the sinner, but a genuine spiritual father, one who will speak good words over the child in time to come, who will pray for it, who will truly care. The joining of these two parents, the one according to the flesh and the spiritual one, creates the conditions and the state in which this child can come to have a Father in heaven. In Baptism the spiritual
father unites the child with Christ, who has a Father in heaven, who holds heaven and earth in His hands. Without Baptism, no kinship with Christ comes about, and by extension none with the Father who is in heaven. This is why John Chrysostom weeps; he laments the unbaptized, the unillumined, the uninitiated, as he calls them. He laments them, he weeps over them. Great is the matter of Baptism, great is the Mystery. It blots out a soul from the kingdom of
Satan and adds it to the Kingdom of God. And joy to those who have around them people to help them keep their name written in the Kingdom of God, the name that was enrolled on the day of their Baptism. Very sadly, of their own will, when they grow up, making bad use of their free will, of the freedom God gave them, they willingly blot out their name from the book of life. If, of course, they ever come to metanoia and return, the name is written in again. This is why the Church, as we said the other day,
prays that the whole day may be made peaceful and sinless, and, failing that, at least that the end of our life be a Christian one. That our name may be found written through metanoia, repentance, for it is repentance that brings a person back to the very place he departed from when he was baptized. This is why it is also called a second baptism, and why, according to Saint Isaac the Syrian, it is grace upon grace. Although it is what we owe, he says, still it is so: no one is saved if there were not repentance and Holy Confession, this second baptism,
in which even a single tear that falls equals the power of the baptismal font, according to Saint Gregory of Nyssa. So, friends, the two earthly fathers, the one according to the flesh and the spiritual one, unite the newly illumined with Christ and make him a brother of Christ. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. What follows after this is Holy Communion, which gives both the Body and Blood of Christ, and so this too gives a person a Father in Heaven. And now, in Christ, one dares to say 'Our Father,
who art in heaven.' These are beautiful, precious details, yet for many these truths remain unknown. People do not know them, they take no interest, and I confess it, we have to confess it. They have learned a thousand things: languages, fashions, scandals, inventions. But these truths have not changed; one does not replace the other. They are not theories, one thing today and another tomorrow, leaving us unsure which to read and which to hold to. They are the same.
Just as they were handed down, so they are preserved, above all in the Orthodox Church, and therefore those who partake ought to know them. Catechism ought not to be missing from any Orthodox home. Encyclopedias of every kind, dictionaries of every kind, anthologies of every kind, all the dialects of the world and so on, yet of catechism there is none. Why should there be none? Because it costs twenty or thirty drachmas? And if it exists anywhere, it has been tossed aside, where they could not find it even in a month, were they given the time.
But an account will be demanded, because these things are immortal, they are a gift, and this is what leaves us without excuse: it is a gift. Let us at least entrust our Christ with this, even tonight, that He may take these things and give them to each one, in the way that He alone knows. That they may bear fruit from this age unto the next. Amen.
