Summary

Dimitrios Panagopoulos continues a treatment of Saint Antony the Great, focusing on evil, conscience, death, and the soul’s departure. Antony teaches that God did not create evil; sin entered afterward, as illustrated by the Prodigal Son and by rust on copper or dirt on a newborn body. God implanted conscience as an inner warning signal, and earthly life is compared to an inn or ocean liner from which all depart carrying only their deeds. Death is likened to birth: the soul leaving the body forgets bodily life, and fear of death arises from ignorance. The proper petition is not early death, but a good hour, repentance to the end, clarity of mind, and surrender to God’s timing.

This evening, by the grace of God, I wanted to give a talk that will be a continuation of another one I gave here last Sunday. Last Sunday, since the feast of Antony the Great fell among the other feasts, I took certain things from his teaching that touched on matters essential to man, and I gave a homily. What I had borrowed were his opinions on the following subjects.

Who ought truly to be called rational human beings. Who ought to be called human beings at all. Who ought to be called free, and the point that education, any education at all, without Christ, without God, is harmful. On these things I had drawn from him, and I answered on the basis of the opinion of this Holy Man. You know, on all these subjects there are opinions,

but opinions from a nous that is not pure. Refined minds are found only in ascesis. It is difficult for a person in this world to find things that are truly sound, because they are always mixed with foreign elements. So I wanted, in a sense, to make this audience too share tonight in these matters. Not in the same ones, of course, for there is a cassette and one can find that talk.

But further along, in other matters of equal seriousness, on which this Holy Man pronounces. From my notes I see that we had reached the point where people think they are on their own and can shut themselves in a room, either alone or with others, and do things that will stay between them. But this Holy Man answers that we were not on our own, that there is also an Angel set apart by God for each person, besides the God who is everywhere present. That was roughly the end of the talk the other day,

on Sunday. Tonight, next in the sequence here, I find something else that interests many. You know, many people remain in ignorance on these matters, and they often blame even God for the evil that exists in the world, and, going deeper, blame the very person of Satan, asking why God made the devil, why evil should exist at all and not only good, and so on. They also lay guilt, whether indirectly or directly, upon God.

This Holy Man expresses himself as follows, that God is not the cause, that God did not make anything ugly or evil. And indeed, if I want to draw on something else, I can make the case easier: take the Parable of the Prodigal Son. There he presents evil as following upon good, he presents evil through the person of the younger son. By nature and from the beginning God did not make evil; evil entered afterward, and the study must begin from there, how it entered, who devised it,

where the deviser was found, who made him, and from that point a person can hold a right opinion and not be swept along to the point of sinning, of blaming even God for evil. And so this holy man himself says, in his own words: “Evil comes after nature, just as verdigris comes upon bronze”—that is, like rust upon bronze. Bronze is not unclean; it gleams, yet under certain conditions it becomes tarnished.

This verdigris, this rust, comes afterward; it was not there when the bronze was made. Thus, he says, just as verdigris comes upon bronze and dirt upon the body, so a person is born clean but later becomes dirty and is washed. The dirt comes afterward. The bronze-worker did not make the verdigris—the craftsman did not make the rust upon the metal. In the same way, God did not make evil or sin in man, nor did those who gave him birth make the dirt or uncleanness.

Nor did the parents who brought the child into the world create the filth. Thus, God made no evil. That is to say, God did not create sin. Knowing that man is harmed by it—forgive me—He also gave man knowledge and discernment, so that he might flee from evil, knowing that it harms him and brings punishment upon him. Indeed, not only did He not give this evil, He did not make this evil. He is not the cause of evil; rather He also gave knowledge,

so that man may see what is evil and what is good, and flee from evil and do good. Consequently we should not lay guilt upon God and blame God, but ourselves. Yet many of us do not want to grasp this, that God cannot be tempted by evil, and that sin, and wickedness in general, is something placed there afterward, with the help of Satan and the cooperation of man.

So from the hands of God man came forth clean, and indeed God gave him, as he says, discernment as well. Within man there is something that answers to the name conscience. What is the conscience? It is the traffic light. The one that stands at the crossroads and regulates the movement of people, securing their crossing.

If a person chooses to disregard the traffic light, and at some moment it shows red and says no, halt, careful here, and the person chooses to break through, to ignore it and refuse to wait for the green so as to cross in peace, no one else will be at fault; he himself is at fault, because he broke through the light. This is what man does. God not only did not make evil, but also placed within man the conscience that cries out to him that this, no, is evil, and it lights up red for him,

and for something else it lights up green and he is calm, serene; and man does not want to listen to the voice of God which is within him, and then lays the blame on those outside, and even goes so far as to accuse all the way up to heaven. So God did not make sin, but it is man who, in cooperation with Satan, becomes the cause of all this misery, from this world into the other. Sin therefore follows upon, as he rightly puts it. God did not make sin; let us not blame Him then. Next, I am simply going in order, next he gives his opinion

regarding the philosophy of life and death. This is the most serious matter that, in a sense, occupies most people, and you know, we stumble, not having a right opinion either about life or about death. It is a great philosophy, and a person ought, in a sense, to have justified these circumstances within himself, so as not to be swept along, because we are swept along, and being swept along we sin and are punished. He gives an example: he presents this world as a great inn, in which various people are cared for,

that is, they rest, people of various kinds and qualities, as we might say. There are people in this inn who sleep up in beds, comfortably, and they snore away. There are people who sleep in the same inn, but they sleep down below, on bedding spread on the floor, and they sleep. They too sleep and snore through that same night. When morning dawns, all these people leave: both the one who slept above on a freshly made bed and the one who slept on a mat spread over a ragged rug. Each comes out carrying his own luggage.

Whatever he had in the evening is all he has in the morning, and he departs. Let me put it to you on another plane. I'll read you exactly how the holy Father says it, but first I'll sketch it a bit loosely, up high, so we can take it in. Let us picture this world of ours, all of it, as an ocean liner that is traveling, a great ship. We board, for instance, at Heraklion in Crete, a thousand people in one vessel, and we come in the morning to Piraeus. And you watch, and people keep coming out and coming out and coming out and coming out at Piraeus.

All these people slept in first class, slept in luxury, super-luxury, second class, third, all sorts, tourist class, the hold, the deck, I don't know, all these people, one up high, another down low, and in the morning, when the ship came to Piraeus, all these people come out, just like that. What went on inside, how they slept, what was there, I don't know; all of that is gone, forgotten. The point is that all these people came out. That is roughly how he presents this world: that some people travel through this world somewhat more comfortably and others somewhat more hardly,

but they too are traveling through this world, and at some point we will reach the quay and we too will step off, here, without taking the bed with us, without taking the bedding with us, only our suitcases, our bundles, whatever we have; with that we will come out. Let me go on. But listen to how he puts it: “Of those staying at the inn”—that is, those who are staying in the hotel—“some are given beds”; they sleep there in beds. “Others have no beds, but sleep on the ground.

” Others have no bed and sleep on the floor, on a mattress, a reed mat, perhaps, or on a rag rug, as we said. “Nevertheless”—there is nothing terrible about it. Both become accustomed to their lot. One may toss and turn more often because his sides hurt from lying on the floor—if that makes any difference. “Nevertheless,” he says, it is nothing; this is of no real importance. "Just as those sleeping in the tent snore" — the ones up above snore, he says — "and awaiting the measure of the night, at dawn they leave the tents and all come out of the inn together,

carrying only their own things." They carry only their own belongings. Nothing else matters, he says—one has a mark above, another below. But when morning dawns, they come out and carry only their baggage. And he says that, in the same way, all of us come into this life. This world itself is like a vast hotel, which one day will open its great doors, and everyone will come out. "And all who come into life,

both those who lived moderately and those who here lived in wealth, just as from an inn, come out of life." As if they all come out of an inn, he says. "Taking with them nothing of the luxury and the wealth of life." They took nothing with them from their comforts or from anything they had for the ease of the body—nothing at all. And this teaches us a certain philosophy, something we spoke about the other day, though I do not know whether you remember: we should reflect on the burial shroud they put on us.

It has no pockets. Burial shrouds have no pockets—not even for a handkerchief—because they remind us that tomorrow morning you will take nothing with you. Throw yourself on the ground, eat whatever you want, have whatever you want—you will take nothing with you. Everything will remain here. That is why it says here: “taking with them none of life’s luxury or wealth. ” They take only their own deeds—and by deeds we mean not only the good ones,

but the evil ones as well. Their own deeds, whether good or evil: “the things they did during their lifetime. You know, when a person takes care to act rightly in this world, to do even the smallest good, this is stored up in suitcases; the angels gather these things. Likewise, whatever evil a person does, the dark ones — there are the others, the black ones — they too gather these things, and indeed they watch over them with passion.

They record them and are ready to present them at the judgment, if repentance, confession, and the corresponding setting-right do not intervene. I'll give you an image: if you go to holy monasteries or to churches that are iconographed in the Orthodox way, not ones that paint all sorts of fairy tales, but in the Orthodox way, you will see, in the narthex outside as we exit, the Judgment. He wants us to see it as we go out into the world, that this is what awaits us. So there, when you see the scale, you will see — no.

At the place where the soul enters to be weighed, whole caravans of Satans arrive, loaded with papers, with scrolls that carry people's sins, their evil works. To set them on the scale, to turn the balance over to this side so as to seize him and cast him down to where the great head of Hell is. So that these may not be found there, there must be sinlessness, so that they have written nothing down, or repentance and confession, so that they have been wiped away. If these things have not happened, then whatever has been done,

a person will find himself facing them one day. From this world a person will depart with luggage: some pieces will have demons inside, and others will have angels. That is why this man says that the only things they will carry from this world they are leaving, from this great inn they are leaving, they will carry, he says, only their own works, whether good or bad, necessarily, for something, it seems, happened in a person's life, either bad or good. If, then, a person kept this in mind, he would reflect deeply on many things and would take care not to

act against his conscience—not to trample on it and press ahead, even walking over dead bodies, as it were, just to enjoy things in this world that he will leave behind here tomorrow. The simple person makes use of them, but we do not pay attention to them and we do not reflect on them, and that is exactly why we are hard, that is exactly why we are people who take revenge, who will avenge certain supposed rights of these worlds and so on, things we could well have let go of. These little possessive pronouns have eaten us alive.

Do you know how much striving goes on, to turn what is yours into mine, to make your own thing my own? Sometimes lawfully, but very often unlawfully. Because many times we hold things unlawfully, things that neither the law of the world nor the law of God allows. And this is it: your own became my own. And as we often say, if a person stopped to think that there is no yours and no mine, but only his, not yours and not mine,

not your things and not my things, but his things, that one's things, then somehow the matter could be set straight. But we do not think about these things. And so, as a consequence, we do not reflect deeply on the question of life and death.

Further on I found, and I pass on to you, another reflection on the subject of the fear of death. People are consumed with the thought of death; they lose their sleep over it. How will it be, where will they end up, how will they bear being under the soil, how will they be in the cold, how this, how that. They are preoccupied and they have lost their sleep. All their days they have become nervous wrecks, and they have not reflected, they have not read what death is. There is no more beautiful day and no more beautiful moment for a person than the day on which he will die.

And indeed, if it can truly be said worthily: blessed is the road you travel today, for a place of rest has been prepared for you, for a place has been prepared for you to find your rest. But for it to be prepared for a person, he must labour accordingly, so as to free the hands of the craftsmen beyond the grave to prepare a place for him to find his rest. Perhaps you are shocked by what I am telling you, and perhaps you find it a bit macabre, you are telling us now about death; but remember one thing I will tell you, so that one day you may die,

just as I too will die separately, remember when you die. Turn back and take a look at the body. You will be disgusted by everything that gave you pleasure up to that moment. And even if you were given the chance to return, you would not return. But the strangest thing is this: the moment the soul leaves the body, you will immediately be astonished at how one has become two.

You will see your whole self being carried along, at the very moment when the flesh has been laid out horizontal. There is Dimitris, and here is Dimitris, how did the one become two? There lies the remains of Dimitris, and here is the real Dimitris, the soul of Dimitris. The person will begin to reflect deeply on the mystery of death, the very thing he ought to have been labouring at all the days of his life. For he is going to live in the eternal and immortal life of that Kingdom. We say the Creed, you know, every day, and yet it is something we do not believe. It is the Creed, you do not realise, my friend,

if there is anything we Orthodox do not believe, it is the Creed; the Creed, the twelve articles; if there is anything I do not believe, again it says, He will come to judge the living and the dead, and so on. You step outside onto the ledge of the church and recite it there. Here is Nikolas, here is even Paradise, you tell me; you should have gone out sooner, because in a little while the Creed will be said, and you do not agree with it, you should have left sooner. That is why we are inconsistent in these matters. A person, then,

must hold a right opinion and rejoice that he will die. For the person who fears death, I put it down to ignorance. I am not speaking of those who have fouled their own nest and fear the judgment, and they fear death quite rightly. But I am speaking of the others, who in some way struggle and to whom it is to their benefit to die, and yet they do not want to die. Because they have not sorted out within themselves what is to come. And remember that I sometimes say a person is more foolish than the little chick. The little chick sits there inside the shell and does not want to come out.

It hesitates when its mother says from outside, do you want to come out? No, no, no. That is how a person is inside. You can come out, you will have air, you can walk, the good woman can bring you things to eat, and there is none of that in here. If the mother hen did not force the chick out by pecking at the shell so that it could emerge, it would remain shut up inside. That is how we are now: we are inside the shell. You see how far we have gone—with our bridges of sighs!

We even crown this corrupt body and adorn it, and so on. Yet it remains nothing more than a cage, with the soul like a chick inside, needing one day to come out—and it should accept its departure with thanksgiving. In any case, we shall continue. So this holy man tells how things stand when a person departs. He says: thus, having come out of the womb, you do not remember the one who was in the womb; as he says, when you were born, you came out of your mother's belly. You remember nothing of what it was like inside the womb—how you lived there, how you were nourished, or how you felt.

I repeat: just as, once you have come out of the womb, you do not remember your life in the womb, so too, once you have come out of the body, you do not remember your life in the body. Just as when you come out of your mother's belly you remember nothing of there, so too, when you come out of the body, you will remember nothing of your body; indeed, you will not even be interested, you will not even want to look at it. You will see it plainly as a piece of carrion, the way we pinch our nose and turn our eyes away and pass by;

exactly that will happen then as well. And it will seem strange to us as we look on from above, because we will have left the body and will see ourselves lying there. We will see the others weeping over us—the children, the wife or husband, the grandfather, the grandchild, the relatives, and so on. We will say, what are they doing, why have they come to all this? Why have they busied themselves with this thing that we, by then, will find loathsome? Do you understand? This is something that the holy man has grasped very well.

He continues and says the following. Just as, when you came out of the womb, you became stronger and greater in body. We now are as we were in our mother’s womb: tiny, weak, and helpless in understanding. And what did we become? Giants—we direct the whole universe from afar. Would it have been better for us, then, to remain in our mother’s womb, as infants? No, it would not.

And in exactly the same way, things will change when a person dies. So just as, having come out of the womb, you became greater and stronger than your body was, in the same way, going out of the body pure and spotless, let me say it again, pure and spotless, going out, not at all coming out black and pitch-black, better then not to come out at all, but if you come out pure and spotless, going out, you are greater and incorruptible, dwelling in the heavens.

You are now in a heavenly setting. No one can say with human language what is there. Paul went, did he not? Did he tell us anything? These things that exist beyond the grave cannot be set down in human forms and with human descriptions. The eye has not seen, and the ear has not heard. And it has not entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him. A person would have to go and come back,

and even then he would not know how to put into human words what those things are there. The proof is Lazarus: did he not stay there four days? Did he manage to express anything? He only shut himself up and never spoke of it again, never laughed again in the thirty years that he lived, remembering only the bitterness of Hades. For Lazarus went to Hades; Christ had not yet risen, things had not yet been separated, the righteous and the unrighteous alike went to Hades.

And he brought back only the bitterness of Hades; nothing needed to be added, without throwing in any sugar, everything was bitter to him, because he carried the bitterness of Hades. So it is not a matter to fear, nor to grieve, that we will come out of this shell, that we will come out of this flesh which holds the place of a mother's womb. Furthermore, just as, the body being completed in the womb, it must of necessity be born; the child is conceived at hour zero. From the moment it is conceived, it needs nine months,

naturally, to remain in the mother's womb. At nine months, at an unsuspected moment, the process of childbirth begins. It asks no one; it works automatically. The mission in the womb is finished; it will come out. She is in pain, she seeks a cradle, she runs, she cries out, I am about to give birth. Hold it back! Nothing, it will be born. It asks no one. And here he says, just as, the body being completed in the womb,

the months that must pass being finished, it must of necessity be born, the necessity to be born. So too the soul, having fulfilled in the body the bounds appointed by God, must of necessity go out of the body. The mission is over, you will depart; whatever I want, it does to you, take whatever medicine you like, care for yourself as much as you like, you will depart, your destiny on earth is finished. Of course, when certain people read this,

who do not know other details as well, they will be scandalized: so it is in God's hands, because here he says, having fulfilled in the body the bounds appointed by God, so it is God who holds the sword in His hand, who cuts or who lets be, this is what God wills. But it is not so. Often we behave disorderly in our life, and by not living a natural and moral life we speed up the time and depart sooner. I gave you a simple image: when I was born,

taking myself as the example, God gave me a lamp in my hand with a wick inside and oil to live eighty years. When will I live out those eighty years? One person's lamp may be destined to burn for ninety years, in another's a hundred, in another's sixty, in another's forty, let us say. So, when will I live out my eighty years, that is, exhaust all the time God had left me to live on earth? When I live morally and naturally. If I do not live according to the

moral laws and the natural laws, I will speed up my death. God, for example, has given the liver for a person to live. And the liver functions normally and helps a person live out the years God has given him. But when you make your liver filter two barrels of ouzo from Tyrnavos, then you will develop cirrhosis of the liver, and you will depart this life at thirty, thirty-five, or forty, though God made you capable of living to seventy.

God is not to blame. God gave you a glass of wine to gladden your heart. But you drink so much wine that it goes to your head; then you get into a car, crash into an electric utility pole, and depart this life. God did not cut your life short. God had not allotted you so few years. It was your own doing. So people often interfere and cut the thread of their own lives. Even though God has, for each person, how much is needed for himself and for others, because it is not an individual matter,

which often becomes a topic of discussion among certain people, one says, let Him take me now, I am not needed, what do I offer here? Perhaps now you offer more, both to yourself and to others, than when you were on your feet, because do you know what a great lesson the sickbed is? For the patient endurance of others, they are sitting their examinations, to show that they are human beings first of all. What a great lesson the bed of the father and the mother and the old man in the house is, for the children, for the daughters-in-law, hello, hello, hello,

with a low voice, I show that he is there, here, give him the little yoghurt, but it is you who are being examined, that is why he is there and is needed. You must never say, let God take me, because those who say let God take me believe, in the final analysis, that they are all right and that God will take them to Paradise; is there a greater self-will, a greater pride than this? And this pride is hidden. A person must never ask God for his departure. You, Lord, whenever You will, only let the hour be a good one, that You find me in repentance,

that You leave me my wits to the last moment, even if I cannot lift my hand to drink a little water. Let me have my wits, to say glory to God, that I not blaspheme You, lest anything happen. That is why he says, blameless are the... “Peacefully, and with a good defense. ” The Church prays especially for these moments of death. From what this holy man says, then, it follows that every person who lives rightly, morally, and according to the natural order established by

God has an appointed span of time in this world. Somehow a way will be found for a person to depart. And indeed there are people who even know the hour of their death. The very hour of their death. Many people, he tells you, will say, I will live three more years. That is how long I will live. You see, someone asks the elder, what day is it today? Friday. Very well. At midday he asks, what time is it?

It is twelve. Say, for instance, six. He has been given word that at six he departs. At six he departs. He closes his eyes and departs. I do not know if you remember an incident I once told you about that took place at Pisia, near Loutraki. It concerned an Archimandrite, a hieromonk, Father Arsenios. He was ill, his urinary system had been struck by tumors and so on,

and they had brought him to Sotiria, and he got well through the water of Kamatero. At that time he was active, and he came out, and their eyes here were running with tears, and he came out and went to the village and stayed in the village and died of another illness, and there where he was being given hospitality, for the hieromonk owned nothing, He asked the lady who owned the house, “Who is that woman in there? ” She told him, “It is Mrs. So-and-so. ” “Tell her to go outside,” he said, “because I want to die; I am going to die.

” “What are you saying, Father? ” “Tell her, as I said, to go outside. ” And indeed, she spoke to the other woman: “Go outside; Father wants something. ” So the woman went out. “Come here,” he said to his hostess. “Do you have bread? ” “We do, dear Father, through your blessing. ” “May you always have bread, my child. Do you have money? ” “We do, dear Father, through your blessing.

May you always have, my child. Put your hand on my eyes and close my eyes so I may die. What are you saying, grandfather? What I am telling you, close my eyes so I may die, that they may not stay open. The woman, without, I do not know from what, placed her hands on the eyes of the holy elder, raised her palm a little later, and grandfather had fallen asleep. And this year the translation of his relics took place, and his relics are stored there and will be taken to the Kala Nisia before long, for he himself had asked that his relics be transferred there.

Close my eyes so I may die. Do you know who said this? We who bray to bring out the soul. Who bray. Forgive me for putting it this way. But this too is the people's expression. And you understand what I am saying in this case. They know exactly when they will depart this life. You may tell me that such people are few. If only we could all be among them!

But because we have no relationship with God, we know nothing of what is happening. Yet this is the greatest day in a person’s life. If a person seeks to meet that day well, everything else falls into place. Our Christ came into the world for this very day, and all His love, His longsuffering, and His work upon every soul are directed toward this day. What matters is how that soul will depart on that day and enter eternity. Allow me to share one more saying of his. I see it here alongside the others, and it says the following: Just as a person comes forth from his mother’s womb,

so the soul comes forth from the body. One class of souls is pure and radiant. Another bears the stains of its transgressions, with dark marks upon it. Yet another is blackened by its many offenses, utterly black from the lawless life it has led. Therefore, the God-loving and rational soul, remembering and considering the evils that await it after death, lives in godliness,

so that it may not be condemned and fall into them. The rational person takes care, reflecting on what awaits him beyond the grave. For beyond the grave, the justice of God awaits him. On this side of the grave, a person has to do with God’s love and mercy. Beyond it, he has to do with the justice of God. And this he must heed and reckon with. Very unfortunately people keep harping, if the expression be permitted, that God is good. Good is dear God.

Who said dear God is wicked? Good is dear God. But just also is dear God. And just is dear God. God has two feet. One of His feet is on this side of the grave. On this side of the grave. And the other is on that side of the grave. On dear God's foot on this side it is written mercy, long-suffering, and on the one from there it is written justice.

So when a person does not make good use of the kindness and long-suffering of God on this side of the grave, he will find himself entangled on the other side with the justice of God. Besides, we see this in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. You received, He tells him, your good things and you did not take care to make good use of them. Here now, you have to do with the justice of God. How beautifully our Church says it: He who holds authority over both the dead and the living as the immortal King.

God holds both the living and the dead in His hand. On this side there is repentance, return, confession, mercy, forgiveness, setting things right. But from there, justice, the justice of God, will lay hold of a person. I say sometimes, I do not know if you remember, that a person, whether he wills it here or not, is traveling toward his grave. And if I would have one ponder this well, I find that he should not always be ready. He does not know when it will tell him stop, get off and give your account; no one knows this. I speak on the basis of what I see now, about fifty-five minutes.

If we multiply that by the roughly seventy-five to eighty beats our heart makes each minute, we get 5,840—5,840—or 4,400. If we think of every tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock as a step we are taking, then we have already taken 4, 400 steps toward the cemetery, with no possibility of turning back. If someone were to ask his heart and say, hey, what are you doing, why are you beating, what?

I am walking, it will tell you. What, where are you going? I am taking you to the cemetery. Seriously? You do not stop? You will only arrive an hour sooner to stop.

Yet the person who today has reached the moon does not want to speak with himself about this reality, does not want to speak, does not want you to speak to him about such things, he considers it an ill omen. Where is the reason? Where is the accomplished person? Where is the educated person? If he does not labor for his immortal soul, toward which, whether he wills it or not, he is walking. And even now as I speak, I am walking this way, and you who listen,

and I who speak, we are traveling toward the grave. Have you seen what people do? They blow out candles on their birthday. Can you tell me whether the last candle of your life is today's? Who told you there is another candle for you to blow out tomorrow as well? Who promised it to you? Where then is the reason? Because I am young, because I observe the natural laws and so on. Here I say there is a measure. How will I be regarded if I depart, if I am not holding my ticket in hand?

And some, no, we have not even prepared a ticket, there has not even been any discussion about this matter. Already you tell us about such things? Man is a dressmaker, my dear. The Ascension—speak to them about this subject, the only serious one, the only saving one, the only reasonable one, the only thing that remains, the only thing that leaves something lasting, the only thing that does not

change or undergo alteration, the one true subject. For, according to Solomon, the only prudent person is the one who saves souls: “He who saves souls is wise”—first of all, his own soul. Is that not so? What good is it for me to make grand gestures about saving others when I myself do not do what I preach? Others may put my words into practice and be saved, while I lose everything. What does Paul say? “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest,

after preaching to others, I myself should become disqualified. ” Others may be saved through what I say, while I myself am left outside. And it gains me nothing if you are saved but I am not. I will be saved if I do what is right—the very things that you too must do, and that all of us must do. So if a person does not grasp this subject, nothing else can really benefit him. The greatest philosophy, then, and the greatest theology, is the subject of life and death. How these matters stand, that we will depart one day, that we must come to stand and find ourselves at

a moment that the Apocalypse speaks of at the end. At one point Christ says, Behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, and John answers and says, Yes, come, Lord Jesus. Will we not say this very thing, Yes, come, Lord Jesus, I await you, come? So if this fear is not there, this awe, that one day we will find ourselves face to face with this and that we absolutely must be found clean, then nothing comes of it.

That is why our prayer should be, “My God, grant me the fear of death. ” I do not mean the fear some people describe: that I might regain consciousness down there among the stones, hear the gravediggers throwing earth on top of me, hear it striking the coffin, and become afraid. No, not that. Not that. The fear of death means fearing the judgment before which, whether I want to or not, I shall stand in Your presence. That is the fear of death.

And when a person fears death, he prepares for death, because the person who does not prepare for death is senseless, he is not right in his mind, he is senseless, he has no sense. The one who has a rational soul, as he says elsewhere, is the one who either does not sin, who is watchful, or who accepts being corrected. So when a person either sins or refuses to be corrected, he can no longer be called a human being, nor rational, nor anything, nor can we applaud him as accomplished, or applaud such things as we ourselves do. I do not know whether I am helping on this point.

I thought I was able to say these things. There are still other matters, very rich ones, that are needed, which I do not know whether time will allow us to discuss in another talk, so that, on the basis of this clear mind of the desert of Saint Antony, we may have a right understanding of vital questions concerning this world that will benefit us for the other. Amen.
