Summary
Continuing the explanation of the Divine Liturgy, the lecture describes the clergy’s preparation for Holy Communion and stresses that clergy and laity approach the same Body and Blood of Christ under the same demands of repentance, confession, reconciliation, faith, and spiritual preparation. It connects communion with the Christian vocation to holiness, the Beatitudes, and the mercy that calls each person to repentance rather than presumption. The closing prayers before reception show the priest acknowledging his sinfulness and asking Christ—who justified the publican, received the Canaanite woman, and opened Paradise to the thief—to cleanse, illumine, and receive him without condemnation.

We will now continue our discussion of the Divine Liturgy.
Those who were with us for the previous talk will remember that we had reached the secret prayer said by the priest or the bishop before he enters the Holy of Holies. It is a very concise prayer, and it teaches us clearly the purpose for which the Divine Liturgy is celebrated.
I will repeat it so that we can reconnect with what was said before: “Attend, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, from Your holy dwelling place and from the throne of glory of Your Kingdom, and come to sanctify us: You who sit on high with the Father and are here invisibly present with us. By Your mighty hand, O Lord, grant that Your most pure Body and precious Blood may be imparted to us, and through us to all the people.”
This is a prayer that the priest or bishop says privately.
From it we learn that the consecration of the Precious Gifts took place for him and, through him, for everyone else as well. The difference between clergy and laity with regard to the Holy Chalice lies in the manner in which it is administered, not in their rights and obligations.
For a layperson to receive Holy Communion, he must have repented and made his confession. He must have love for his fellow human beings and be reconciled with them. He must have made the proper preparation under the direction of his spiritual father, believe in the Mystery, and then approach.
The Holy Gifts will be given to him by the priest, bishop, or deacon. But the same requirements apply to the priest, bishop, or deacon: he too must have repented and confessed, must be at peace with others and reconciled with them. Furthermore, he must believe in the Mystery—not merely outwardly, but in truth—and then receive it himself.
The clergy will give it to us—“and through us to all the people.” The clergyman receives it himself, but he must receive it as though he were receiving it from the hand of Christ.
He has no right to receive Holy Communion unless the conditions of faith and purity are present, so that he may receive without condemnation. If he does receive without them, the Holy Gifts consume him, and their effect will be the opposite of what Holy Communion is meant to bring.
The same applies to the faithful, because although Holy Communion cleanses from sin, it also burns souls when there has not been the necessary preparation of repentance, confession, setting one’s life in order, reconciliation, and faith.
When that preparation is present, Holy Communion is for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Otherwise, it leads to eternal Hell. The Body and Blood of the Lord are never merely a little wine and a little bread, as some people say. No. It is truly the Body and Blood of the Lord, bringing condemnation upon those who approach unworthily.
If only it were otherwise, and they were not condemned—but it is not so. A person will either receive a blessing, if he has prepared himself, or incur condemnation, if he approaches carelessly and in an unworthy state.
This is a matter of fear and trembling. Both groups, then—laity and clergy—have rights and obligations. The difference is that the clergy receive the Holy Gifts themselves, while we who are not clergy receive them from their hands.
They receive Holy Communion within the sanctuary; we receive it outside the sanctuary and beyond the veil.
That is the difference. There is no other difference. A man cannot say, “I am a priest, so I may receive Holy Communion.” No, you may not receive if your life is not in order; if you do, you will suffer the consequences. In the same way, I too will suffer the consequences if I approach Holy Communion without having put my life in order. There must be fear—that is, reverence, regard, and due consideration.
To fear God means to respect God, to take God seriously, and to reckon with Him. This is also how we understand the words, “and let the wife fear her husband”: she is to respect him, take him seriously, and have due regard for him. Holy Communion is not something ordinary or casual. It is serious—the most serious thing of all.
And in proportion to its seriousness, it requires the corresponding preparation. This secret prayer, then, said by the bishop or the priest, shows that Holy Communion is both for them and for us.
Then the deacon cries out, “Let us attend!” This is an instruction already given earlier, when the epistle reading of the Apostle was about to be heard: “Wisdom! Let us attend!” It was heard again when Christ was about to speak through the Gospel: “Wisdom! Let us attend!” And now it is heard once more: “Let us attend!” Pay attention. Forget everything else and turn your attention to spiritual wisdom.
In a certain sense, this exhortation is addressed to the priests, who in turn convey it to the people: Pay attention, because the Holy Gifts of which we are speaking are about to be given—and must be given—“to the holy.”
“The Holy Things for the holy,” according to the interpretation of the Holy Apostles, means: the Holy Things are for the baptized. No unbaptized person has the right to approach the Mystery. Baptism comes first, making the person receptive to sanctification, and Holy Communion follows.
A person is cleansed from ancestral sin and, if he is an adult, from the sins that have been forgiven. Then he receives Holy Communion. But if, for one reason or another, though baptized, he has defiled his Baptism, he must receive the second baptism mentioned by Saint Gregory of Nyssa: the baptism of metanoia and confession. For the Mystery of metanoia and confession is called a second baptism.
Indeed, Saint Isaac the Syrian calls it “grace after grace.”
The first grace, he says, is Baptism, and the second grace is metanoia after Baptism. The first Baptism concerns sins committed before Baptism. The second baptism—metanoia and confession—concerns sins committed after Baptism.
For Baptism is not repeated, since it is a type of Christ: “one faith, one baptism,” as Paul says. Therefore, in His love and wisdom, our Lord has left us this Mystery.
He instituted it after His Resurrection, immediately, on that very day: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” He gave it to us because He knew that after Baptism we would fall and soil our garment, so that we might be able to cleanse it again.
The Holy Things, then, are for those who are clean, not merely for those who have bathed. As for bodily cleanliness, Glory to God, we have detergents, soaps, baths, and all sorts of other things. But inward washing is another matter. Most religious people are preoccupied with outward cleanliness; outwardly, as we were saying, they shine, but inwardly—let us say it plainly—they are filthy. We would not be wrong to say so.
There are many things that leave a person inwardly defiled and stained. Such a person is not clean and therefore is not holy, because holy means clean. The person is not clean; he is not blameless.
He must be cleansed. He must go to the second baptism, prepare himself for purification, do whatever his spiritual father discerningly tells him, and approach with the fear of God, so that he may be reunited with the One from whom sin had cut him off.
When the Church says, “The Holy Things for the holy,” it does not mean that the Holy Things are only for Saint Nektarios or Saint Spyridon, as some people say—I have heard them. “These are for the saints,” they say, “not for us.” But from the moment you are baptized, you are a little saint.
Sainthood begins at Baptism and reaches its fulfillment in martyrdom. There is a progression. Within this struggle that begins after your Baptism, you are holy, and you may approach, provided that you preserve the conditions established by the Church, which the Fathers have repeatedly upheld and explained.
Then you will be able to approach. Now, how does this happen? He cleanses you with His Blood. How does it happen? He cleanses you beneath the priest’s epitrachelion, through the prayer of absolution, and so forth. This is not something perceived by the outward senses, but it is perceived inwardly.
A person feels, for example, that he entered the place of confession carrying five tons on his back, and that after confessing he came out lightened. He sees things differently. He comes out with hope and with courage to fight and continue the struggle.
He comes out with katanyxis, with compunction, now acknowledging that he is the sinner. He comes out in tears, though before, even if you struck him, he would not weep. What is this? How did this change take place? The person does not know. He simply feels something leaping within him, but he does not know how. These are Mysteries; they are not perceived by the outward senses.
Yet inwardly he receives assurance that something real is taking place through what has been established in our Church, the Orthodox Church. So the Holy Things are not only for the saints who have already reached perfection. They are for us, so that we too may become such saints.
Our soul must also be washed in the Blood of the Lamb. God has provided these means. You take a soiled handkerchief and wash it with soap. Then you rinse away the suds once or twice, hang it out, and let it dry.
That is how it is. In a certain sense, you are washed with soap in confession and rinsed clean in the Blood of the Lamb.
This is essential. Those who do not confess before receiving Holy Communion are like someone who takes a handkerchief that has not been soaped, merely rinses it, and then hangs it out. What will he accomplish? He will leave it in a worse condition than before.
There are many such people, who receive Holy Communion merely to mark a feast day or “for good luck.” They do not regard Holy Communion as food for the soul and as the means of theosis, nor do they know that we were destined to become gods by grace. That is precisely why they do not make use of the means that would help them attain this theosis.
For the Body and Blood of Christ are given for no other purpose. Through them, and in no other way, the human person becomes by grace a brother of the Lord and, by extension, a child of the Father. Otherwise, he cannot even say, “Our Father.”
So, the proclamation, “The Holy Things for the holy,” should immediately fill a person with fear. Am I holy? Then I should approach. Am I not holy—why have I come? For if I am not holy, that means I am not clean. Why did I not follow the proper order, be cleansed, and then approach?
For grace is not given where sin is present. The Dove is discerning—know this. Grace is a Queen; she cannot be commanded. The image here is Noah and the ark. The Patriarch released the dove, after first releasing the raven. The raven found corpses outside, feasted on them, and had no desire to return to the ark; it remained outside quite contentedly.
That was what it had been waiting for and what it wanted. That was its food; that was its life. Then, Scripture says, he released the dove. But the dove returned, because it found nowhere to set its foot, nowhere to rest. Outside there was filth and a foul stench.
Besides the water, there were corpses of every kind and rank—animals, human beings, and so forth—and these forced it to return. So the Patriarch took it back into the ark. This is an image of grace: wherever grace finds fleshly, worldly, sensual, or satanic sin upon a person, whether clergy or laity, it turns back.
You cannot command grace. Grace must find a clean place in which to rest. This is purification, the condition in which a person receives grace. Yet many people come to Church without any preparation at all.
Indeed, with no preparation whatsoever. They take care of their tie, their shirts, their outer clothing, their face, and their appearance, but they pay no attention to their soul. They may even eat their breakfast and have some cake, and then they leave as soon as the Holy Gifts are brought out, or after the Gospel, the Creed, or the Lord’s Prayer. The other day I saw someone take antidoron—the blessed bread after Liturgy—without even waiting to see whether the Gospel had been read. He took it and left, fully aware that he was walking out of the Church. He had stayed only until the Gospel; when he saw that the Gospel reading was about to begin, he went over, took a small piece of antidoron, and left—the Gospel unread, but the antidoron already taken.
And he left during the glorious dialogue of the service. While everyone there remained standing, he got up and walked out. Such a person is a stranger even at the threshold. He never truly came into the Church on any Sunday, because he never remained in the Church.
Is that what we call church attendance? Does such a person now receive grace? Does he imagine that the grace of our Lord draws near and bestows favor upon him? Grace is given to you through the Church, but there is work that a person himself must do.
So, many people go without any preparation. When the priest or the deacon proclaims, “The Holy Things for the holy,” my knees ought to tremble. “Does this mean You will not give them to me?” I do not know. If you have been cleansed, come and receive.
I am making you responsible for yourself. Do not say, “I want them, so I am coming.” I proclaim to you that these Holy Gifts are for the holy, for the clean, for those who have not defiled themselves. They are for those who have confessed, for those who have repented, and for those who are prepared to struggle.
They are not a reward for your sin, nor are they simply something to take because you are hungry. If you are hungry, take the antidoron. The Church does not exist for the antidoron; she exists for the Gift itself. The purpose of coming to Church is not to serve the antidoron as though that were the Gift.
Does that sound too blunt or severe? It becomes especially clear at the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.
You see, many people go on Wednesday and Friday to receive Sunday’s antidoron. They do not go to receive the Gift that their mother, the Church, has reserved for them—to give it to them on Wednesday and Friday as well, so that they may be strengthened for the struggle.
This takes place during Great Lent. “I know about the antidoron,” someone says. But the antidoron is a blessing. We are speaking now about salvation, about the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. That is the matter before us. For this reason, like a loving parent, the Church gives what she has reserved from Sunday.
John Chrysostom sums up what I am telling you in these words: “You entered the contest; you thereby confessed yourself worthy.”
So now, when the proclamation is made to you, “The Holy Things for the holy,” you may approach and receive the Holy Gifts.
By coming, you have declared that you are in good order, that you are worthy and properly prepared. For if you have come in any other condition, your prayer is not heard—neither on your own behalf nor on behalf of others.
“Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.”
This was the declaration of the man who had once been blind. We must understand that God, I repeat, cannot be commanded. It is we who must conform ourselves to Him.
He is longsuffering; He does not bless the sin. He waits, He endures, but He does not bless it. He waits for you to change your life. He waits for you to stop sinning, to repent, and to go to Holy Confession. He says, “I am waiting for you to worship the Lord. I am waiting for you to come into My Church and abandon the religion you have invented for yourself—a religion that has only Hell and no Paradise.”
For many people have fashioned a religion of their own, but their religion has only Hell; it has no Paradise.
Otherwise, you are told to leave with the catechumens. When the priest says, “All you faithful, again and again,” you ought to depart.
Since you are not in a proper state to approach the Holy Gifts that will shortly be offered to all the people—to all the people gathered in the Church—you have no place claiming the privileges of the Church if you do not attend her services. You must first pass through the confessional before coming fully into the Church.
I do not mean that you should not enter, fall to the ground, and weep for your sins, saying, “My God, glory to You that Sunday has come; do not let me remain as I am.” Yet a sinner’s prayer is heard only when he prays for himself and for his own metanoia, his repentance. Then the sinner’s prayer is accepted.
So do we imagine that God accepts the grand gestures we make—wanting funeral rites and services for other people and their loved ones—simply because we want them? I say again: the proclamation, “The Holy Things for the holy,” is a promise as well as a summons. These four words must bring a person to himself at that very moment: “What do I want? What am I doing here? Why should I not be among those who may approach?”
Who is responsible—God or I? Many people, of course, look for someone else to blame. “I would like to, but my husband…” “I would like to, but my wife…” “I would like to, but society…” No—you did not truly want it. If you truly desire it, a way will be found.
Christ has the power. And for those who want testimony from Holy Scripture on this point, I urge you to read about Daniel. He was taken captive together with the other young men and, as a prisoner, was expected to eat whatever he was given.
But he did not eat those foods. He asked instead for what we would call fasting food—food prepared without meat or other rich ingredients. “Impossible,” they told him. “You will grow weak, they will think I am withholding your food, and they will have my head.” Daniel replied, “Very well, let us try it for a few days.”
“And if we should grow weak, then let your will be done.”
The young men prayed, and God changed their overseer’s mind, so that he agreed to the trial.
The overseer took the food allotted to them from the royal table and kept it, so that no one would see that they were receiving less. He gave them legumes and water, and they ate those—not the royal delicacies, the wine, and everything else that you can imagine being served at a king’s table.
And it was, moreover, the table of an idolatrous court. After a few days, Nebuchadnezzar came to examine them—to test them, as we would say. What was the result? The young men were more handsome, healthier, and more vigorous than the others.
I say this for the sake of our own pampered children, who do not fast at all. We are afraid that fasting will somehow harm them, so on Wednesdays and Fridays we give them rich food, while they fill their minds with lessons about worldly romances.
Do you understand? God changed that overseer’s mind. The same God will speak to your husband, your wife, your father, your sisters, and the others. They do not want it? First set it firmly in your own heart that you truly want it.
You will struggle, and you will attain it, because Christ lives and has the power. But we do not reckon with this. We meet one small difficulty, turn it into an excuse, and bring it before Christ: “You know, I want to, but…” There is no “but.” There is no “but.” You must struggle. We have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood; we have not truly struggled, as the Apostle Paul says in Hebrews.
In any event, it is a difficult thing for a human being to be holy—and especially to be holy by nature, as Christ is, Christ who is offered to us. That is precisely why the choir, through the chanter, responds: “One is Holy, one is the Lord, Jesus Christ.”
We are not holy by nature; and if we possess any relative holiness, we possess it through Him. He alone possesses holiness by nature, and we acknowledge that holiness in Him: “One is Holy, one is the Lord, Jesus Christ.”
“To the glory of God the Father. Amen.” Yet this response does not settle matters for us. We must struggle to become holy—to become holy by participation in Him. “Become holy” is a commandment. The purpose of the human person is to become holy, to attain theosis, divinisation.
A person must fix this firmly in his nous, his spiritual intellect. For often, when people see others struggling, they mock them: “Go on, become a saint! Where do you think you are going, you wretched man?” But if I am striving to become holy, O Pharisee, that is precisely what I must do. And there is also the other side of the matter: the blessings pronounced upon those who live according to the Beatitudes.
The Beatitudes call us blessed. If someone attains holiness, what more has he achieved than what he was obliged to achieve?
Did not our Christ say, “When you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants, for we have done only what we were obliged to do’”?
Can you stand beneath an orange tree, applaud it, and say, “Well done for producing oranges”? What else should an orange tree produce? In the same way, the Christian’s task is to become holy: to acquire all the qualities of Christ, to read the Beatitudes and strive to live by them, knowing that he will meet Christ.
He must climb those nine steps of the Beatitudes and put them into practice, as the Saints did, knowing that he has thereby attained sanctification.
We do not possess even one of the Beatitudes—not even one. Most of us do not possess a single one. In other words, we have not even set foot on the first step, so that we may find Christ where He has gone as the forerunner on our behalf.
Christ, then, is not to blame, nor is His forbearance, which is so often interpreted as though He did not exist or were powerless. No. It is His kindness; and, according to Paul, the kindness of God leads us to metanoia, to repentance.
Others drown in water; we shall drown in the mercy of Christ. We shall drown in Christ’s mercy. Christ will overwhelm us with the oil of His mercy. No one will put us into a cauldron of oil. We ourselves will hide our faces and go of our own accord to Hell. We will not even wait to hear the command, “Depart from Me.”
We will not even remain to hear it. Just as four-footed animals, when they enter the yard, each know where they belong and where they are meant to rest, so we too will go straight to our own place. What we are saying now may sound like clever words.
But when this harmony of body and soul is broken, then we shall see how matters truly stand. It is a fearful moment, yet it passes unnoticed. When the priest proclaims, “The Holy Things for the holy,” and the response is sung, “One is Holy, one is Lord,” I have not yet explained to you what this means.
At that moment, the hymn known as the Communion Hymn is sung. Today the sermon has very often been moved to the time of the Communion Hymn, although its proper place in the Church is normally after the Gospel.
After the Gospel—that is where the sermon was meant to be given, because the catechumens were also present. They too had to hear the sermon before departing: “Let none of the catechumens remain; let none of the catechumens remain. All you faithful, again and again...”
But since we no longer have catechumens and are all uncatechized,
the sermon ceased to be given after the Gospel. I am not speaking of places where there is no sermon at all. Where it is given, it was moved for another reason as well: our faithful do not attend the whole service, and many have not even reached the Church by the time of the Gospel.
They arrive after the proclamation of the Holy Things, or perhaps even later. So the sermon is arranged at that point in order to catch everyone inside and also to make use of the time.
Depending on how many clergy are receiving Holy Communion inside the altar, a corresponding amount of time is needed: five minutes, seven, eight, nine, ten, or twelve—it depends on how many are there. The hymn varies: elsewhere they sing “Praise God,” and so forth; there is one hymn for the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, another for Great Thursday, and so on. In earlier times, this was sung together with psalms throughout the entire time when the faithful were receiving Holy Communion.
They were sung throughout the entire time when the faithful were receiving Holy Communion, because in those days it took a long time. It was exactly the opposite of what happens today. Today five receive Holy Communion and the other ninety-five do not; then, ninety-five received and only five did not.
If you read about the staff of Hagia Sophia alone, you will find that it numbered four hundred and fifty. And I am not counting the doorkeepers, the chanters, or the readers. The priests, deacons, and other clergy numbered more than one hundred and fifty. They all came out carrying the Holy Chalices.
More than twenty thousand people received Holy Communion every Sunday. Throughout that entire time, the hymn known as the Communion Hymn was sung. We still hear it today while the priest is receiving Holy Communion, or whenever there are many faithful to commune.
Out of superstition, we have assigned Holy Communion to particular days; that is what most people do. Just look: someone takes the child to receive Holy Communion on Saint Barbara’s day, or on some other day, thinking that Holy Communion has some special power on that particular day. Saint Stylianos’s day is supposed to be for children. We have tied it to certain days, just as someone else says, “It will give the child a little golden tooth,” or wishes people “many years” on Great Thursday, for good luck.
Our faithful do not regard Holy Communion as necessary daily nourishment for the soul. As Saint Ambrose of Milan says, they have made Holy Communion an annual event, although the Lord gave it to us as daily nourishment: “Give us this day our daily bread.”
According to Saint Cyril, the Lord’s Prayer was placed before Holy Communion for no other reason than these very words: “Give us this day our daily bread.”
This refers to the consecrated Bread, which was consecrated earlier, as we have explained in our previous talks.
So, as I was saying, the sermon is delivered during the Communion Hymn. Inside the sanctuary, the priest and the deacon—we shall speak only of these two, though it may also be a bishop—exchange a series of liturgical phrases as they prepare to receive Holy Communion.
The deacon gives the signal: “Master, divide the Holy Bread.”
Yes, this recalls what our Lord did, as Saint Luke relates: He took the bread, broke it, divided it, and gave it to them. It is precisely in remembrance of this that the Bread is divided.
The Bread—that is, the Lamb resting upon the diskos—is arranged as we discussed before: the Lamb is in the center, with the particles for the Theotokos, the ranks of the saints, and, in front, the living, the departed, and those in need. “Master, divide it.” The priest then takes the Lamb, upon which are inscribed the words “Jesus Christ Conquers.” During the Prothesis it was cut crosswise from beneath, and now he divides it into four parts, saying: “The Lamb of God is divided and distributed: divided, yet not dismembered; always eaten, yet never consumed; but sanctifying those who partake of Him.”
I spoke to you about this one evening. I repeat it now because it had raised a question in the mind of one of our brothers, who may even be with us tonight.
He could not understand how this was possible. His question had arisen especially from the words some of our priests use, something we had also pointed out here: “The Body of Christ, the Body of Christ, the Body of Christ; the Body and Blood of Christ.”
And we said that the proper words are: “The servant of God partakes of the Body and Blood of Christ,” not simply, “the servant of God partakes of body and blood of Christ.” For when you say it in that way, the evil-minded, under the influence of the evil one, may imagine that you are receiving only some part of Christ.
You receive the whole Christ.
No matter how small the portion may be, you receive the whole Christ.
He could not understand this, so he made it a matter of prayer. And the Lord showed him what takes place. Of course, these are Mysteries; they cannot be grasped through human knowledge but rest upon faith. Whoever wishes accepts them, and whoever does not wish does not accept them.
Thus, the servant of God partakes of the Body and Blood of Christ.
For in the Old Testament, another lamb was the type—the prototype pointing to this Lamb. At that Passover, of which Saint Paul says that Christ our Passover was sacrificed, the lamb was given whole to the Hebrew: with its head, its feet, and its entrails—whole and entire.
This was a type, showing that afterward the whole Christ would be given to the new Israel at its own Passover. For Passover is not merely a feast. According to the divine John Chrysostom, a person celebrates Passover every time he receives Holy Communion.
He celebrates Passover.
Now this man saw the bishop receiving Holy Communion, and then the faithful approached one by one. The bishop took the Holy Gifts, cut off a small piece of the Precious Bread with the communion spoon, added a little Wine, and went to give it to the communicant.
He then saw this tiny portion become a little Child, whole and entire, within the communion spoon; and the faithful Christian received Him.
Then came the second person: “The servant of God partakes of the Body and Blood,” and so forth. Once again, that second tiny portion grew and became another little Child, in exactly the same way, within the holy communion spoon. The next faithful Christian received Him and moved on.
And in this way they all received Holy Communion—each one receiving the one and same Christ.
These are Mysteries for the believer. Whoever tries to reduce them to human knowledge and science, taking up a microscope to examine them, will lose them. He must receive them whole, just as they are, in faith.
And we have many accounts from Tradition concerning this. Many people questioned the transformation of the bread and wine, and whether they truly become the Body and Blood—whether it is truly flesh, as Christ insisted when He asked, “Do you also wish to go away?”
He did not take back His statement that it was flesh. “It is flesh. Do you also wish to go away?” When the others heard that they were to receive His flesh, they must surely have thought, “What is He going to do to us now—turn us into carnivores?”
“This is a hard saying; who can hear it?” Very well, He says, you may all leave. Yet He continues to insist that it is His flesh, His Body and His Blood.
As we have said before, outwardly there are bread and wine. Yet in them we receive the Body and Blood of Christ. He gives them to us under the forms most familiar and dear to mankind: bread and wine. If He gave them to us visibly as flesh, no one would receive them.
Who would receive them? No one would. We may raise our supposedly clever objections, but if He gave His flesh to us visibly, no one would take it. And so He gives it to us in the manner in which it must be given, so that we may receive it.
But this requires the corresponding faith.
The beautiful words in the service of preparation for Holy Communion lead a person into the Mystery and help him understand what it is: “I believe, O Lord, and I confess that this is truly Your Body, and this is truly Your Blood.”
Yes, I believe it; for, as Paul says, faith is “the evidence of things not seen.” That is how matters stand. The Lamb, then, is divided into portions, yet always remains whole, and He sanctifies all who partake of Him.
As I told you, one sun enters through a thousand windows. The one sun fills every window, yet it remains one and the same sun. In any case, another instruction follows. The priest or bishop performs each of these actions over the Holy Diskos.
The deacon says, “Fill, Master, the Holy Chalice.” In other words: take what you have just divided, one of the four portions, and place it in the Holy Chalice. And the priest says, “The fullness of the cup of faith, of the Holy Spirit.”
He then places into the Chalice a portion of the Lamb bearing the seal “Jesus Christ conquers.” Strictly speaking, as we have read, the Fathers placed in it the portion marked “Jesus”; that was the portion they placed in the Chalice and from which they received Holy Communion.
They left the remaining portions to be given to the faithful outside the altar. They themselves placed in the Chalice the portion marked “Jesus,” and this is still what is placed there. Then, because this Chalice is connected with an event on Golgotha, the following takes place.
When the deacon sees that the priest or bishop has placed this portion of the Lamb into the Holy Chalice, he says, “Bless, Master, the hot water.” You have often heard the instructions, “Heat the hot water,” and, “Prepare the hot water.”
The word zeon means something boiling hot; it is hot water.
They heat the water well—strongly, if possible—and pour it into the Holy Chalice. The priest or bishop must take care that the Chalice remains warm even when it reaches the faithful. Far too often we are given Holy Communion as though it came from the Lord’s cold side.
That is wrong.
It is often cold; or they pour in only a little hot water, and it grows cold because the Chalice itself is cold. The wine also becomes cold with it. It ought to be distinctly warm. On several occasions I have received Holy Communion from priests, and I also remember receiving from one bishop.
On the day of his ordination, the Holy Communion was warm. You truly felt that you were receiving from the Lord’s side, because this is what it symbolizes: the warm, living side of the Lord.
It symbolizes the blood and water that flowed when the Lord’s side was pierced, as John Chrysostom explains. That is what is represented there. The altar server does bring the water while it is hot, of course, but it often grows cold before the sermon is finished.
Things must therefore be arranged properly—even by adding more hot water afterward—so that when the priest comes out proclaiming, “With the fear of God, faith…,” the faithful too may experience this warmth, for that is its purpose.
On this point, I would like to say something. I have seen some laymen and laywomen, and also some priests who wrongly give in to such practices and give the hot water—the zeon—to certain people. They take it thinking that they will give it to their husband or wife, supposedly to warm that person’s faith.
Many men and women use this zeon in other superstitious practices as well. But it will do nothing. It must not be given out. Since it has been blessed, it must remain in the Church. It should afterward be used when the priest consumes the remaining Holy Gifts, and whatever is left should be poured into the sacrarium.
It must not be taken outside. This calls for metanoia—for repentance. These are wicked practices: spells and pagan superstitions. They imagine that because this water is hot, it will somehow stir people up and warm their faith. What faith? The person has no faith.
Indeed, many are satisfied to treat drinking the zeon as though they had received Holy Communion. They want to substitute it for Holy Communion and rest content with the zeon. One summer in a village, I met a seventy-eight-year-old elder who, according to the villagers, was a holy man.
I do not remember how I happened to be in the altar at the end of the service. I saw him go over, pour some of the zeon from the small vessel used to carry it into a little glass, and drink it. I asked the priest, ‘Father, does this elder have a blessing to do that?’ ‘Well, old Papamitsos drinks it,’ he replied. ‘He drinks it.’
Why does he drink it? Does he ever receive Holy Communion? ‘No. In all the years I have been here, he has never received.’ ‘So instead, we commune him with the zeon!’ And the man rests content in his delusion, thinking that the zeon and Holy Communion are one and the same.
It is like those who say, ‘I have communed by drinking the water of the Great Agiasmos, so I need nothing else.’ But the Great Agiasmos is given to cleanse and prepare you so that you may receive Holy Communion. When you are forbidden to receive Holy Communion, it is given to prepare you for it.
Therefore, it is not Holy Communion.
This delusion, then, must be put aside.
We are deluded into thinking that, by our own methods, we can bring about certain results and salvation in the world. That is why so many improper things happen among us. We have no one sick at home, yet we celebrate Holy Unction. What purpose does Holy Unction serve then? Who deceived you and made you into self-appointed saviors? No one, eh? Have the blessing of water instead. Why celebrate Holy Unction? Holy Unction is for the sick: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the priests.” But we turn everything upside down. What is needed is metanoia—repentance—Holy Confession, a return to God, and the cutting off of sin. Why deceive a person, give him the zeon, and let him go back to sleep spiritually? He thinks he is blessed now, and so he sleeps. In any case, this is what takes place there: “Blessed is the fervor of Thy saints.” The priest blesses the zeon, the hot water, takes it and pours it into the Holy Chalice; and, as you see, it gives off steam. It shows that the side of our Lord is, as it were, still living—
the mingling of the blood and the water in this instance.
Thank you. The blood and water that came forth from the pierced side of our Lord also have another meaning: they signify Baptism and Holy Communion. The water signifies Baptism, and the blood signifies Holy Communion.
And Eve is connected with the typology of the pierced side.
The first Eve, taken from Adam’s side, was pierced by Satan, and the result was death. The side of the new Adam was pierced once again, but this time it brought forth life. It heals the consequences of that first piercing of the side of the first Adam—of Eve.
These things are beautifully interconnected. They help a person settle inwardly, absorb the truth, believe, find peace, and stand on firm ground. Ignorance is a serious matter in human life. These things were not placed there without meaning or purpose.
The Orthodox Church contains nothing that the Holy Spirit has not ordained. Everything has been established through the Holy Spirit. These things have a foundation and a real existence; they are not human inventions. The Holy Spirit established them.
But a person must have knowledge and a relationship with the One who established them, so that He may interpret them and reveal them to him, enabling him to understand. For example, if the Holy Spirit speaks in Holy Scripture, just anyone cannot interpret it.
To interpret what was written, you must possess the same Spirit who inspired it. The same is true of these liturgical actions. After this mingling has taken place, both the priest and the bishop, if a bishop is present, regard it as their duty to offer a prayer.
They do not approach without prayer. Just as we laypeople say nearly half of the prayers of preparation for receiving of the Holy Gifts the night before and the rest in the morning, so they also pray. The fact that some of them do not pray—just as some of us do not pray—is another matter.
That makes no difference to the institution itself. It does not abolish what the Church has established. The failings of particular persons do not abolish the institution. The institution itself is right and holy. At this point, then, there is a most beautiful and humble prayer, in which the priest acknowledges his sinfulness and considers how he is to approach.
It is the beautiful prayer I often mention, and with it I shall conclude: ‘I stand before the doors of Your temple, yet I do not turn away from my dreadful logismoi, my intrusive thoughts. But You, O Christ our God, who justified the publican, had mercy on the Canaanite woman, and opened the gates of Paradise to the thief: open to me the depths of Your love for mankind. Receive me as I approach and touch You, as You received the sinful woman and the woman with the issue of blood.’
‘For the one who touched the hem of Your garment readily received healing, while the other, who took hold of Your immaculate feet, received the remission of her sins. But I, wretched as I am, dare to receive Your whole Body. Let me not be consumed by fire, but receive me as You received those women. Illumine the senses of my soul and consume the guilt of my sins, through the intercessions of her who bore You without seed and of the heavenly powers; for blessed are You unto the ages of ages. Amen.’
God willing, we shall explain this prayer next time. There are also other short prayers offered by the Holy Fathers before receiving the Holy Gifts. God willing, we shall continue with these in our next talk.

Λοιπόν, τα Άγια της Αγίας, αμέσως πρέπει τον άνθρωπο να τον φέρει σε φόβο. Είμαι άγιος, θα πρέπει και να προσέλθω. Δεν είμαι άγιος, γιατί ήρθα; Διότι, αν δεν είμαι άγιος, δεν είμαι καθαρός δηλαδή. θετική καθαρότητα, Γιατί δεν πήγα κατά την τάξη να καθαριστώ και να προσέλθω;
Άρα, τα κουβαρνταλίκια που κάνουμε εμείς, που εφόσον εμείς θέλουμε νεκροθάφτες, Θέλουμε να βγάλουν τις άλλες κυρίες των άλλων, αυτά ανταδέχεται ο Θεός Είναι λοιπόν λέγω μια στιγμή και έτσι μια επαγγελία, τα Άγια της Αγίας Αυτές οι τέσσερες λέξεις που τον άνθρωπο πρέπει να το φέρνει στον εαυτό του αυτή τη στιγμή Διότι εγώ τι θέλω εγώ, τι θέλω εδώ εγώ Γιατί να μην είμαι κι εγώ μεταξύ αυτών;
Μας μακαρίζουν. Αν ένας αγιάσει, τι παραπάνω πέτυχε από ό,τι ήταν υποχρεωμένος να επιτύχει;
