Summary
The ninth talk asks the faithful to come in time for Orthros and Vespers instead of arriving late and leaving early. Those who slip out before the dismissal treat the temple as a theatre, Dimitrios Panagopoulos says, and he recalls a village priest who began the full service only when the latecomers arrived, so that they heard for the first time the Hexapsalmos, the Doxology, and the hymns they had been skipping. Whoever misses Orthros and Vespers never learns the meaning of the feasts or the doctrine woven through their hymnody. The enemy drives people out through impatience and irritation, so patience must be armed beforehand. To leave before the blessing is to resemble Judas, who went out from the supper before the thanksgiving (Matthew 26); the healthy soul runs to the temple as the deer to the springs.
