Summary
Reading the cleansing of the ten lepers in Luke 17:11-19, Dimitrios Panagopoulos treats Christ’s miracles as testimony that the Savior is fully human and fully divine. Leprosy, with its Mosaic exclusion and priestly examination, becomes an image of sin; Moses, Miriam, Naaman, and Gehazi illustrate guilt, humility, purification, and judgment. The ten are healed while obeying Christ’s command to show themselves to the priests, just as Naaman’s washing in the Jordan reveals the fruit of humble obedience. Panagopoulos connects this biblical pattern with Confession, in which Christ grants forgiveness through ordained ministers. Sacramental grace proceeds from Christ and the Holy Spirit, not from a priest’s personal sanctity; contempt for the priesthood must therefore give way to faithful recourse to the Church’s healing mysteries.

After the great feasts, and after presenting Christ to us at the beginning of His public ministry, our Church now wishes to show people the chief purpose for which He came into the world. And, as you yourselves know, He came into the world because of the sin of the world.
of the world. He had no other reason to come into the world; He came solely because of the sin of the world. He is the One of whom John said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away—that is, who bears—the sin of the world.” We saw Him when He was one day old, at His Nativity; we saw Him when He was eight days old, at His circumcision; we saw Him at the age of thirty, at His Baptism; and just the other day, on the Sunday after Theophany, we heard Him proclaim: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand, and believe in the Gospel.” Therefore, since Christ came because of the sins of the world and in order to deal with the problem of sin, He cannot be merely a man.
For one human being cannot heal another human being completely, since he himself is also in need of healing. Therefore, someone beyond mere humanity is needed. Jesus cannot be only man if He is to be the Savior.
He must also be God. And He is shown to be God not only by the fulfillment of the prophecies in His person, but also by the works He performed—works no human being could perform. When He opens tombs, He cannot be merely man. When He heals the blind and gives them sight—when, with a little spittle and earth, He fashions and creates an eye—He cannot be merely man; He must also be God.
When He knows what has happened and says, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,” He knows it; and when He says, “I am going to raise him,” He knows that too. These are the works of God; they cannot belong to mere humanity. As man, He speaks; as man, He weeps; as man, He asks questions; as man, He sleeps.
But as God, He opens tombs; as God, He walks upon the sea; as God, He fashions eyes and cleanses leprosy. His divinity, then, is revealed by His works. And so, to help people understand precisely who Christ is and what His role is, to receive Him as they should, and thus to be benefited—that is, to be saved—the Church sets before us a series of Sundays from the public ministry of Jesus.
There is a series of Sundays devoted to particular miracles, miracles performed not by Jesus merely as man, but by Jesus who is God. This coming Sunday, then, presents the following event. It is what we know, and may remember from previous years, as
Healing ten lepers is not something a human being can easily do. As you know, even today, two thousand years after Christ, we still approach leprosy with caution. The Evangelist Luke records this event in the seventeenth chapter, from verse twelve onward.
the Holy Healing of the Ten Lepers. It begins: “And it came to pass, as He journeyed to Jerusalem, that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.” As He was going to Jerusalem, it says, He passed through Samaria and Galilee. “And as He entered a certain village”—just as He was about to enter a village—“there met Him ten men who were lepers,” and they stopped there.
They stood at a distance. I do not know whether you are aware that lepers were forbidden to live among everyone else. They were driven outside the city, outside the town, outside the village. And they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”
Clearly, they knew of Him. They had heard His name and recognized Him. As He passed by, they cried out from a distance, asking Him to have mercy on them. Of course, when they asked for mercy, Jesus understood what they were seeking through that mercy. They were not asking for a few coins; they were not begging for money. They were asking to be healed.
Why were these men out there? They were outside because they suffered from a disease that, in those days, could not be cured, and they were unable to live among the others. Who sent them there? Did they go of their own accord? Did the state send them? The police? The Ministry of Health?
Do you know who sent them there? The priests. Diseases were—and remain to this day—the concern of physicians. Leprosy, however, was entrusted to the priests. In the Wisdom of Sirach, chapter 38, God says concerning physicians: “Give the physician his place, for there is need of him.” Make room for him, it says.
Open the door and let the doctor come in. He is needed. The doctor is from God, and so are science and medicine. “The Lord created medicines from the earth,” for they too are necessary. Medicines also come from God.
He provided beforehand the herbs from which medicines are made for humanity. Thus, although diseases were entrusted to physicians, God gave a special command that leprosy should be handled by the priests.
If you have the Old Testament at home, read chapters 13 and 14 of Leviticus. There you will see how God teaches the priests to deal with leprosy, even giving detailed distinctions according to its severity: whether the sore was deep, whether it was of a certain color, and so forth.
Like another Hippocrates, God teaches the clergy how to diagnose the disease of leprosy. If they saw the symptoms He described, they would give the sufferers the required certification, and those people would have to leave their families and withdraw from society.
That is why these men were there. Driven away and cast out by order of the priests, they found themselves in that place and encountered Christ as He passed by and entered the village on His journey to Jerusalem.
Someone may ask, “But is leprosy not a disease? Why does the priest deal with it rather than the physicians?” Because leprosy is a type, a foreshadowing, of sin. God wished to teach that sin would be entrusted to His clergy.
Though leprosy afflicts the body, it also points to sin within the soul. It is like the saying, “The body is sick because the soul is sick.” And we find this teaching from very ancient times, going all the way back to Moses.
It was Moses who received the commandment from God to go and take the people of Israel and lead them into the land of Canaan, into the land of the Promise, the Promised Land. And it is from that time that God first shows Moses that he is a sinner. He showed him his sinfulness by means of leprosy. Leviticus, I want you to keep this in mind, is a book written by Moses.
For it belongs to the Pentateuch; Leviticus is one of its first five books. Therefore, God spoke these things to Moses fifteen hundred years before Christ. Even then, humanity was already afflicted by leprosy.
And from that time onward, it was an incurable disease. And I repeat: the clergy always held this opinion. Let me tell you a few incidents which show that this is indeed so. The first was when God told Moses to go to Pharaoh and bring out the people.
Moses did not want to go. He brought God many arguments — that he could not go, first of all because he was slow of speech. And since he was slow of speech, he would never manage to persuade Pharaoh to hand the people over to him, because there were so many interests at stake.
Just think: six hundred thousand people working every day, without pay, for the economy of the state. What an advantage that was! Pharaoh would not give up such a people. Whether Moses said this openly or only thought it, he still did not dare to appear before Pharaoh and undertake such a task.
In any case, the Lord said to him: “Did I not make the tongue? Do I not know that you are slow of speech? Why should that concern you, since I am sending you? I shall accomplish the work; you will not do it by yourself.” And He helped Moses to understand this.
He said to him, “Put your hand into your bosom.” Moses put his hand into his bosom. “Now take it out,” He said. Moses took it out and was terrified. His hand was completely white, covered with leprosy. Where had the leprosy come from?
It was leprous. “Put your hand back inside your garment,” He tells him. Moses puts it back in. “Now take it out again,” He says. He takes it out, and it is clean. “This is who you are. You are the leper; you are the sinner. What can you do? I am the One who will send you. You will simply be an instrument in My hands. I do not need your cleverness. I do not need your eloquence, your rhetoric, or your arguments. You are a sinful man.”
In this way God humbled him; afterward Moses accepted, and the rest of God’s dispensation was carried out through him. Another place where we see leprosy as a type, an image, of sin in the Old Testament is the case of Moses’ sister.
Moses married a dark-skinned Ethiopian woman. His brother, the high priest Aaron, and his sister Miriam did not approve of this marriage, and they were offended because he had not consulted them. So they began criticizing them, as we so often do, speaking behind people’s backs when they do not ask our opinion.
“You know she came with nothing; you know she had no possessions; you know what our own household is like,” and so on and so forth. This does not happen only with criticism of a woman; the same things are also said about a man.
And in the midst of this conversation, this accusation and condemnation—
Miriam was struck with leprosy from head to foot, white all over. Aaron was not struck with leprosy. Someone will ask: "How did that happen? They were both accusing him together. One was cutting and the other was sewing, as the saying goes." But Aaron is a high priest, and here he leaves behind a type, a foreshadowing, so that people may learn this: the priesthood is never struck with leprosy.
The priesthood itself is not defiled with leprosy. The priesthood does not sin; the priest sins—not the cassock and not the priesthood. You will kiss and venerate the priest’s hand, however sinful he may be, because he possesses the grace of the priesthood and does not lose it through his personal sin.
That is what it teaches here. When Moses and Aaron saw their sister white all over with leprosy, their knees gave way, as we say. They realized, and they began to reproach themselves, that this thing had happened because of the accusation against this couple, and above all against the bride.
They went to Moses, fell down before him, and asked his forgiveness. They begged him to pray to God so that Miriam might be cleansed of the leprosy. As we know from Holy Scripture, Moses was simple and guileless in heart; he did not hold it against them, as we say.
So the man knelt and prayed to God. But God did not cleanse Miriam immediately. He said that she must fulfill a canon, a rule of penance: she would remain for at least one week outside the camp, in the fields, and only then would she be cleansed.
And she remained outside for one week, under a canon, just as we too may be placed under a canon. We may not be allowed to receive Holy Communion or to have free communion with God. We are placed under a canon. And Miriam fulfilled her canon.
Then she was cleansed. If you wish to find this account, look in the twelfth chapter of Deuteronomy, where you can read the whole story. Let me give you one more example, because, as Holy Scripture says, “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.”
When the Prophet Elisha gave the command to Naaman the Syrian — the leprous general who went there and asked him for his help — the command was this: go to the Jordan, dip yourself in it seven times, and you will be cleansed. Naaman, at any rate, raised a great many objections. I don't know whether you know the story of Naaman.
And if you don't know it, then learn it — go read it and learn it. For those of you who would rather hear it as a homily, I have given a whole talk devoted to it. It exists on a separate cassette: “Naaman the Syrian.” Naaman is a great lesson for us — with his leprosy, with his pride and self-importance, with his sevenfold burial in the Jordan, and so on and so forth.
This is a profound matter. When at last he yielded and went, he humbled himself and immersed himself seven times. He came up out of the water with skin no longer leprous, but like the skin of a little child.
This is how the human soul comes forth from Baptism. This is how the human soul comes forth from Holy Confession. When a person comes to metanoia, repents, and confesses, his wounded, cancer-stricken soul becomes like the flesh of a little child.
That is how completely Christ cleanses the soul and gives it new birth.
Naaman offered money and clothing that he had brought with him from Syria as a gift of thanksgiving—as though to pay the physician—but Elisha refused them. Elisha had a young attendant there, a disciple named Gehazi.
Gehazi could not accept this. He thought they should have taken the gifts, since Naaman had offered them freely and they had not asked for them. After the men had departed and were on their way home, the young man ran after them and asked them to give him some clothing and other things—not for themselves, of course, but supposedly for some sons of the prophets who were there in the wilderness of the Jordan.
The men were eager to help. The general sent servants down from his chariot, loaded them with the goods, and had them help the young man carry everything down to their hermitage by the Jordan.
And then head back. When the young man got near the hermitage, he said to them, 'You've still got a long way to go,' he says. 'Leave them here, I'll take them down myself. Thank you very much.' So they left them there, with no idea what Gehazi was really up to. Gehazi did not want to run into his elder, Elisha.
After they had gone, he hid the things somewhere nearby. Then he appeared before Elisha as though nothing had happened. But Elisha had other eyes; he did not see only with his bodily eyes. “Where have you come from, Gehazi?” he asked. “I have not been anywhere,” Gehazi replied. “Nowhere at all. I was close by; I did not go anywhere.”
He said, “Is this why we have come here—for vineyards and fields, for clothing and gold? The leprosy of Naaman the Syrian,” he told him, “shall come upon you.” The moment he said this, the man became leprous from head to toe.
“The leprosy that Naaman left behind, you will take upon yourself because of this sin.” And Gehazi went out from his presence covered with leprosy. There are other such incidents as well. If anyone wishes to search for them, he will find that this is indeed so.
This, then, is why those men found themselves there, crying out to Christ and asking Him for mercy. And I repeat: when we say that they asked for mercy, we do not mean that they were asking for money. They were asking for mercy because of their terrible affliction: they were separated from their homes, their children, their work, their wives, and everything else, with no hope at all, because there was no cure.
Now, the answer of Jesus to their request. "And when he saw them, he said to them—"
“Go”—go forth—“and show yourselves to the priests.”
Go and show yourselves to the priests. It was a strange command,
because they could have said to Him, “We have already shown ourselves to them.”
And they drove us away. What, are we supposed to go and show ourselves to them all over again? Is there going to be a retrial? What exactly is going to happen? Make us well first, and then we'll go and show ourselves to them healed, so they can give us the paper that clears us to mix freely with people again, so we can go back to our homes, back to our families, back to our children. But you haven't done any such thing for us yet. So where are they supposed to go now? In any case, they went — without saying a word.
Could they have answered that way? Instead, they stood firm in obedience to the command: “Go and show yourselves.” And what happened? “As they went, they were cleansed.” Where were they cleansed? On the way. And do you know what that way is called? It is the way of obedience. They were cleansed on the way of obedience.
This is a great thing. We have learned many things, but this one thing we have not learned. We have learned here, and we have learned in going about as well.
We have learned proper ways; we have learned languages; we have learned how to make money and how to fight; we know how to defend ourselves, and so on. But we do not know how to obey—and obedience is the greatest virtue, first put into practice by Christ: “Obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross.” Obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross. There is no greater virtue. Everything is contained within Christ’s obedience. Consider how children prosper when they obey their parents; how well a disciple does when he obeys his elder; how well a worker does under his master, or an employee under his director. What harmony! Everything is regulated and set in order. But when a person presents himself as knowing everything and lives by that saying of ours...
As the saying goes, “The fox is a hundred years old, but the fox cub is a hundred and five.” Sadly, that is how things turn out.
Christ once gave another strange command like this. I do not know whether you remember it. He gave it to the man who had been blind from birth.
He made clay with His spittle, put it on the man's eyes, and told him to go and wash in the pool of Siloam. He went, he washed, and he could see. He didn't say, “Excuse me — have you misunderstood me? When did I ever insult you? What did I do to you?” No, he went — and that is what happened.
He said nothing. Yet he could have protested: “Have You no shame? I may be blind, but I still have a fine face. Is this how one treats a blind man? Forgive me, I cannot see You, but You should not have done this to me.”
But the man said nothing. He obeyed, he washed, and in that washing he found his light. A person can be greatly edified by this. Where God commands, there is no place for asking, “How?” “How can we go to the priests?” There is no place for “how.”
When God speaks—when God says yes—you must not say no. And when God says no, you must not say yes. Never set yourself against the commandments, the Canons, or the words of God. Yet we pass everything through the filter of our own reasoning, as you know, and that is precisely why we get the opposite results.
If our Christ received the glory that He received, He received it because of His obedience — “becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” That is why, it says, God “highly exalted Him” and gave Him “the name which is above every name,” so that “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things on earth, and things under the earth” — everything.
Why? Because He Himself became the first one to obey. And if God became obedient, what ought we to become? God says: fast on Wednesday and on Friday. Why shouldn't you do it — and why shouldn't I? He says: fast the forty days. Why shouldn't you do it?
He says: “You shall not commit adultery.” Why do you do it? “Don’t steal,” He says. Why do you do it? “Don’t lie. Don’t dishonor anyone. Don’t wrong your neighbor.” Why do you fight against Him? You don’t obey. You do your own thing. Are you smarter than God?
So, one day you will find yourself face to face with God. In any case, she says that they were healed through obedience.
Now, we would never have gone to the priest, just as we still do not go today. Many people say, “Why should I go to the priest? What is the priest, after all? Is he better than I am? Does he know more than I do?”
““Will you kiss my hand?” “I will not kiss his hand”, and I will not go.” But then you will remain with your leprosy. You will remain with your leprosy; you will remain with your sin. The priest has been given this authority. You did not establish the priests.
“I established them,” says Christ. Do not say, “Why should I go to him?” Christ Himself established them. They will pronounce forgiveness over you. They will give you authorization to receive Holy Communion. Many people have not understood this.
They think they can tell everything directly to God. But what will God say to you? If you tell it all before an icon, what will the icon say to you? Tell me—what will it say?
Christ has appointed someone for this ministry. Our Christ does not forgive sins directly, apart from the ministry He has established.
Of course, it is Christ Himself who forgives them, for He performed the miracle and He cleansed the lepers. But He cleansed them when they obeyed His command to go to the priests. The priests simply certified that they were clean and gave them the document allowing them to return home.
That is the point. That is how it happened then; that is how it happens now; and that is how it will happen until the end of the age. “Most Holy Theotokos, forgive me.” The Most Holy Theotokos does not pronounce absolution; she does not wear a priest’s stole. “Saint George, forgive me.” Saint George does not pronounce absolution. Neither does Saint Spyridon, nor Saint Barbara.
The priest, the sinner, is the one who forgives. Strange, isn't it! And yet that's how it is. Confess to the Theotokos all you like — you'll still go to hell with every one of your sins. Go ahead and confess to whomever you please. Do you remember the case I told you about, old Kyriaki, who for forty years used to go and make her confession to our lord Saint John? He gave her such a blow to the head that she lost her sight.
“Am I the one who is supposed to forgive you?” he said. “You have worn me out for forty-five years! Did Christ send me to hear confessions and pronounce forgiveness? I once heard confessions at the Jordan; now Christ has His priests.” And they had to carry the old woman away from the little chapel where she went every evening to light Saint John’s oil lamps.
She made her confession to Saint John: «My lord Saint John, you know what I have on my soul; forgive me, I am going to receive Communion.» Fine — she got her signature, and off the old woman goes to receive Communion.
…you receive Communion. She did that for forty-five years. Until one day she went down hard, headfirst — one thing after another — and it finally laid the old woman low. They gathered her up and laid her on a door and carried her down to the Kyriakon, the main church. We happened to be there just then. It was just before the feast of Saint Spyridon. I had gone up there, I was speaking, and I had a spiritual father close by, and that is how we learned about all this. That is how it is for many people. I'd tell them — but who are you going to tell them to?
This physician cannot heal himself.
A Patriarch cannot hear his own confession and forgive his own sins. A spiritual father who pronounces forgiveness over five hundred, one thousand, two thousand, or a hundred thousand people cannot forgive his own sins.
He has to go to someone else to have them forgiven. This is the verse that James writes: «Confess your trespasses to one another, that you may be healed.» That is meant for the priests; it is not for us, the laity. We go to the priest. But the priest himself goes to another priest. «Confess to one another» — that is addressed to the priests: if you want to be healed, if you want to be saved.
Do not make a show of searching for a “good spiritual father.” Christ did not say here, “Children, go and find good priests, and show yourselves to them.” Nothing of the kind. He said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”
Were they pure gold back then? Were the priests of the Old Testament angels? Were they not human beings? Did they not have sins? Christ did not tell them to choose. You may say to me, “Should I not choose if I can?” If you can choose, then choose.
But how can you really choose? What if he leads a double life? How do you know about his other life? You see only the outward things: that he shouts, that he does this or that, that he is active, and so on. Do you know what he does at home? Do you know what he does behind closed doors? You do not.
Your concern, then, is not to go and find a good priest. It is to find a priest of God who belongs to the Church of Christ, who has been authorised to hear confessions on behalf of the Church, who has a letter of appointment and has been sent by the bishop.
As the Church says, if he happens to be a sinner, that is his own account with God. The moment he puts on the epitrachelion, the priest's stole, he is holy. Holy. When he takes it off, his sins are his again. But the stole itself is holy, and it is not he who forgives; Christ is the one who forgives.
You, O Lord, as You have said, “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed,” loose also this servant.
"Send down, O Lord, Your Holy Spirit, and sanctify this water." You are the one who sends down and sanctifies, not I. What I say is: "Crown them," "Baptize them," "The servant of God is crowned unto the handmaid of God, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
He forgives, He baptizes, He crowns in Holy Matrimony, and He sanctifies. The priest is an instrument, a pair of tongs in the hands of God, a wire through which the current passes. He is nothing more than that. Even if the wire is rusty, the current still passes through it.
Many remain very far from salvation—and I say this plainly—and remain with their sins, with leprosy in their souls, because through ignorance, malice, or I do not know what else, they have come to look askance at the priesthood. For Satan knows the path by which a person must pass.
So he attacks that path. And you know how much poison is poured out in our days against the Church and against the clergy in general. Apparently, only among the clergy are there corrupt men! There are none in medicine, none in law, none among shopkeepers, none among government ministers, and none in royal courts!
Only the priests are corrupt, is that it? The devil does not trouble anyone else. It is the priests who put his eye out with the epitrachelion. Even though they are sinners—yes, even though they are sinners—they put his eye out. That is precisely why he rages against them.
We are shrewd about many things. Why should I not be shrewder about this as well? I have often heard people say, “How can I receive antidoron from the hand of a man who does so many things?” Well, have you seen him do any of the things you accuse him of, or that others say he does? Have you seen any of them? No, you have not. Ninety-nine percent of such accusations are never proved. “That is what I heard; that is what people say.” But you did not see it.
So who is behind all this? Do you go to the Church for the priest, or do you go for your own soul and for Christ? These are things people fail to keep in mind. You want the priest and the hierarch to be saints before you will receive anything from them.
Judas received as well. What benefit did he gain? Did Judas not receive from the hands of Christ? What benefit did he gain? Satan entered into him. Were there ever hands holier than Christ’s? No. What benefit, then, did Judas gain from receiving from holy hands?
The issue, therefore, is not who gives, but who receives, because the one who gives is always sound. Do you remember the example left to us by the Prophet Elijah? He received bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening.
In the beak of a raven. And there you have it — the ravens of the Old Testament are the ravens of the New Testament: the priests. Did Elijah ever ask God, "Have you got no cleaner bird to send me a piece of bread?" Did he ever complain to Him? No — he simply took it. He wasn't concerned with who the postman was.
He was not concerned with who brought it to him. All that mattered to him was who had sent it and that it was what he needed. Did he say, “I will not take it from the beak of this filthy bird”?
...that filthy bird, which feeds on rotting things. He would have died there, in the wilderness of the Jordan, by the Brook Cherith. But that meant nothing to him. Who was sending it? God. Through that bird, yes. Blessed be His name, for He sends me bread and meat. What does “bread and meat” mean? Did God have nothing else to send him? Did He have no fish? What, then, could that meat have been? It is the bread that contains the flesh within it—the Body of Christ. God was giving him Holy Communion. Was the raven stealing it from some butcher?
Was the raven stealing the meat from some butcher's shop, and the bread from some bakery? No — that food was angelic, it came from the Holy Spirit; just as the bread they give us in Holy Communion, the body of Christ, is of the Holy Spirit. That is what this teaches us. What is there for us to say against it?
It is a disgrace: many people have no respect for the clergy. When you see a cassock, my dear brother, my dear sister, bow down low, no matter who is wearing it. Anyone who does not honour the cassock does not honour God — that person is an antichrist, and does not honour Christ either.
Christ says to the Apostles and to the others, “He who rejects you rejects Me.” I am the One who accepts you, who wills that you should serve, and who works the Mysteries through you. I appoint you to read the prayers over the water, and it becomes the blessing of water and does not spoil. Therefore, anyone who rejects you rejects Me, the One who has appointed you.
“And he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” Christ says these things, does He not? Yes, He does. When Christ entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, what happened? There was an uproar like an earthquake. What did they not spread on the ground? What precious garments did they not bring out? What flowers did they not lay down? What palm branches did they not place before Him? What did they not do?
And who walked over all these things? The donkey. Christ’s feet did not tread on them; the donkey’s hooves did. Were all those honours and that magnificent welcome offered for the donkey, so that the little donkey might walk upon them?
All this was laid before the donkey, not for the donkey itself, but for the One it carried upon its back. All this preparation, all this care, was for the One whom the donkey bore. Once we take Him down from its back, we will put the little donkey in the stable to eat straw. Do you understand? Should you not, then, stand in reverence before the priest who holds Christ in his hands? What respect must be shown to him, since he is counted worthy to bear Christ—he too being like that little donkey, is that not so?
And even that little donkey was counted worthy of such care. So what should the priest be granted? Are we really so foolish? I don't think we're that foolish. Why then does this happen? Who is it who profits from it? Satan profits. He is the one who stirs up all this uproar.
If Christ acknowledged, and neither rejected nor set aside, the priests of the Old Testament, who sacrificed bulls and calves, and if He sent the men to them, saying, “Go there and show yourselves to the priests,” then I will not abolish the priesthood.
How highly, then, must He regard the priests and bishops of the New Testament, however sinful they may be—those who divide His Body and offer Him in sacrifice upon the Holy Altar, whose hands, if we had spiritual eyes, we would see covered with blood!
Let us not be deceived. If only we would read, we would find many things that could help us. There is much helpful teaching and there are many sayings of holy men concerning these matters. Since I happen to be speaking about this subject now, allow me to read one to you.
It says, “Do not receive an accusation against a priest”—Paul says this to Timothy—“except on the testimony of two or three witnesses.” If two or three testify that they themselves saw it, and so forth, then it is different; otherwise, do not accept the accusation. Athanasius the Great says, “Contempt for the priest will quickly lead to contempt for God.”
Whoever despises the priest, he says, will very soon despise God as well. "For when a person is reverently disposed toward the priest, how much more so toward God." When you show reverence to the priest, he says, all the more will you show reverence to God.
“Even if the priest is wicked, God sees that, out of honor toward Him, you show respect even to one who is unworthy of honor, and He Himself will give you the reward. For He says that whoever receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward.” This applies also to honoring, welcoming, and obeying the priest. If God sees that, in the person of the priest, you behold God and therefore esteem and respect him, then God will reward you according to your heart.
“Do not receive an accusation against a priest, nor rebuke him, but appeal to him as to a father.” Nilus the Ascetic says this. Yet we are always ready, as soon as we hear something about anyone who wears the cassock—a nun, a monk, a priest, or a bishop. It is enough that the person wears a cassock.
There's a sweetness to it; there's a real pleasure in the kind of talk that goes on against the clergy. “The failings of priests should not be made known to the many.” If you really know, he says — if you have seen it with your own eyes — that a priest has fallen into some sin, then don't speak of it anywhere.
"Those who take from this a pretext for scandal go on sinning without any fear." Because they will be scandalized, they will stumble — and they do not know that this priest, sinner though he may be, still celebrates valid mysteries: the sacraments he performs, the services he serves, and the blessings he gives are all valid.
That person will be scandalized and spiritually harmed, and afterward the guilt will fall upon your own neck, because you caused the matter to spread and others to be scandalized. “If I myself were to see a bishop violating another man’s marriage”—that is, if I saw a bishop committing adultery and destroying another man’s marriage—“I would take off my imperial robe and cover the unlawful act, so that the sight of what was being done might not harm those who saw it.”
Do you know who said this? Constantine the Great. And do you know when he said it? At the First Ecumenical Council. When the First Ecumenical Council convened, they gave him lists containing written accusations against certain clergymen who were present at the Council.
It was an opportunity for him to tell them these things, as we have been saying. Tradition relates that he took the accusations, ordered a fire to be lit, and, without reading them, threw them into the fire before everyone and burned them. Then he said, “If I could cover with my imperial robe those things you have heard about them, I would do so.”
Do you understand? The divine Chrysostom says: “Even if the priests are guilty of crimes, it is still not lawful for you to judge their lives.” Even if they commit crimes, he says, it is not for you to speak. You have no right whatsoever; there is nowhere from which you can claim such a right.
No one permits you to speak against him. For one who honors only a blameless priest—one who loves and respects a priest merely because he appears sinless—honors the individual himself; he honors the priest as a man, but not the God who appointed him.
He who honors the priest will also honor God. But he who has learned to despise the priest is already walking down a path that will one day lead him to revile God as well. In other words, whoever rejects his priest, whom God Himself bears with, has set out on the road that will eventually lead him to blaspheme God too.
"Even if the priest is a bad man, God, seeing that for the sake of the honour due to Him you show respect even to one who is not worthy of honour, He Himself will give you your reward." God sees, he says, that you reverence him simply because he is a priest, even if he happens to be a sinner.
Because the priest represents God and fulfills a role on God’s behalf, God will grant you your reward. And one more thing on this subject: “Do not say, ‘The one who offers the Gifts is sinful.’” Do not say, “He is a sinner, and I will not receive antidoron from his hand.”
"And so I'm not going to go to confession, and I'm not going to go and receive Communion. The man stands condemned, he is unworthy. And the grace of the All-Holy Spirit does not descend." Do not think anything of the kind. There is Another standing behind him.
There is Another who knows and examines what is hidden. Behind him, he says, stands Another. Recognize that He is surely above you, and leave judgment to the righteous Judge. He has a Master, he says; let his Master judge him.
But let the priest be one who does not err in the doctrines concerning God. He must not be a heretic or have been deposed from the priesthood. That, he says, is the only condition to observe. As for everything else—whether he is sinful, blameworthy, living according to the flesh, and so forth—you are not his judge.
For grace has not departed from him; he still retains his proper rank and office. Therefore, I beg you, judge no one, and especially no priest of God. Judge no one, he says, and above all, never speak against a priest.
Instead, approach the divine Mystery with faith, active metanoia, and a clean conscience, and you will receive sanctification from all these things. For even if the one offering the bloodless sacrifice were, so to speak, an angel of God, if you approach unworthily, that angel could never cleanse you of your sins. Even if he himself is a Saint, he cannot save you when you approach unworthily. Judas himself bears witness that this saying is true. I mentioned this to you earlier.
For Judas received the divine Bread from the immaculate hands of the Lord Himself; but because he received it unworthily, Satan immediately entered into him. I have said all this because Christ did not tell them, “Go and find good and pure priests, tell them your trouble, and show yourselves to them.”
The result was that these men were healed along the way. And when they reached the priests, they undoubtedly showed them wounds that had been mysteriously healed on the path of obedience. Then, of course, they received the documents certifying their cleansing and returned to their homes.
But then something else took place. Listen to what the Gospel says.
What does it say? One of them—one of the ten—when he saw that he had been healed, that he had been cured, returned, glorifying God with a loud voice. He came and glorified God in the person of Jesus, and he fell on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. He was not a Jew, not one of His own people, but a foreigner—a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered.
Jesus answered and said, “Were not the ten cleansed? Where, then, are the nine?” Were not all ten of you cleansed? Where are the others? This is what man does. These men had been lepers in body, but the nine proved that they were lepers in soul as well.
Through their ingratitude, they removed the leprosy from their bodies only to carry it into their souls. Not even a single “thank you.” You see, tribulations draw a person together and bring him to his senses. Illness makes him restrained and attentive; it teaches him reverence and leads him at least to make the sign of the Cross.
But as soon as he has his health and some money, he no longer cares about anything. He listens to no one—not even to God. There is no “thank you,” nothing at all. That is why God must often keep us bound down there by the foot.
He must take us by the ear and give it a tug through various circumstances, so that we may remain close to Him. Ingratitude, my beloved, is one of the deadly sins. A person should be grateful even to a mouse.
Yes, even to the mouse. You'll say, "Father, that sounds absurd. Seriously, is that really a sin?" How many of them must have died on your account, madam, on your account, sir? How many experiments are carried out on mice? The lady wants to find out whether she's pregnant? The mouse and the frog are the ones who will pay for it.
They pay the price so that experiments can be carried out and it can be determined whether she is expecting a child. Nothing is needed. It is said that once a lion was digging with its claws around the root of a tree to make a place where it could lie down.
And there, down among the roots, was a little mouse. And the lion swiped it out of the way with his claws. So the mouse was terrified, and now the lion started playing the big tough guy with it, and went to kill it with his paw, with his claws. And the little mouse begged him and said: "My lord, my king, don't kill me, don't kill me. Let me have my life too. I'm doing you no harm. And who knows? One day you might even have need of me." "Oh, be quiet and get lost," he says to him. "Away from here. Off with you," he says, "away from here." And so, as we said, he drives the mouse off. "Oh, so you're the one who's going to turn up and help me? Do I have any need of you?" All right, all right — the little mouse gathered himself up and left. But a little while later, somewhere out there, in a hunter's net, they caught the lion, the king. They catch him in a net out there, the lion, and they tie him to a tree.
They tie it to the tree with a thick rope. And there the lion was thrashing and struggling — but where was the lion going to go? — while they waited to find some way to haul it off. And just then the little mouse showed up. "Hey, what are you doing up there, king?" he says. "Get away from here," the lion tells him. "Me?" says the mouse. "I'm here for you." "What are you to me?" "Me? What do you care what I am? Don't you see the state you're in here?"
So beware of ingratitude. Show reverence for the clergy and for everything God has instituted, because God is God, and as God He will require justice from man. He is long-suffering and waits for us, but He does not forget. I pray to Christ that, together with you, I too may be edified by what we have heard this evening. Amen.

Γιατί είναι εκεί έξω τώρα αυτοί; Είναι έξω διότι είναι ασθενείς από μίαν ασθένεια η οποία δεν θεραπευόταν τότε. Και δεν μπορούσαν να είναι μαζί με τους άλλους. Ποιος τους έστειλε εκεί; Επήγανε μόνοι τους; Τους έστειλε το κράτος; Τους έστειλε η αστυνομία; Τους έστειλε το Υπουργείο Υγείας;
Του λέει: «Βάλε το χέρι σου εις τον κόλπον σου». Το βάζει ο Μωσής, το χέρι εις τον κόλπον του. «Βγάλε το», του λέει. Το βγάζει. Τρόμαξε ο Μωσής. Ολόλευκο το χέρι του, λεπρωμένο το χέρι του. Πού ήταν η λέπρα;
Γιατί; Γιατί έγινε αυτός πρώτος υπήκοος. Και αν ο Θεός έγινε υπήκοος, εμείς τι πρέπει να γίνουμε; Λέει ο Θεός: νηστεία Τετάρτη και Παρασκευή. Γιατί εσύ να μην το κάνεις κι εγώ; Λέει: νηστεία τις σαράντα ημέρες. Γιατί να μην το κάνεις;
Λέει: «Οὐ μοιχεύσεις». Γιατί το κάνεις; «Να μην κλέβεις», λέει. Γιατί το κάνεις; «Να μην ψεύδεσαι. Να μην ατιμάσεις. Να μην αδικήσεις τον άλλον». Γιατί αντιστρατεύεσαι; Δεν υπακούεις. Κάνεις το δικό σου. Είσαι ξυπνότερος του Θεού;
Τώρα, εμείς δεν θα πηγαίναμε ποτέ στον παπά, όπως μέχρι σήμερα δεν πηγαίνουμε. Πολλοί άνθρωποι, εγώ λέει θα πάω στον Παπά. Και τι είναι ο παπάς; Και είναι καλύτερος από εμένα ο παπάς; Και ξέρει περισσότερα από εμένα ο παπάς;
Και έχουν τη γνώμη ότι μπορούν να τα πουν απευθείας στον Θεό. Και τι θα σου πει ο Θεός; Αν τα πούνε στην εικόνα, και τι θα σου πει η εικόνα; Πείτε μου, τι θα σου πει;
...κοινωνείς. 45 χρόνια το έκανε αυτό. Μέχρι που μια μέρα σωριάστηκε κατακέφαλα, το ένα μετά το άλλο, και την έφερε κάτω τη γριά. Και τη μαζέψανε και τη βάναν στην πόρτα πάνω και την κατέβασαν στο Κυριακό. Βρεθήκαμε εκεί τότε εμείς. Ήταν παραμονές του Αγίου Σπυρίδωτος. Είχα πάει εγώ, μιλούσα, είχα πνευματικό κοντά, και τα μάθαμε τα περιστατικά αυτά. Έτσι είναι για πολλούς ανθρώπους. Εγώ θα τα πω· σε ποιον θα τα πεις;
Επήρε και ο Ιούδας. Τι ωφελήθηκε; Δεν πήρε από του Χριστού τα χέρια ο Ιούδας; Τι ωφελήθηκε; Σατανάς εισήλθε εις αυτόν. Υπήρξαν αγιότερα χέρια από του Χριστού; Δεν υπήρξαν. Τι ωφελήθηκε ο Ιούδας, αν πήρε από Άγια χέρια;
Δεν ενδιαφέρθηκε ποιος του το έφερνε. Κι ό,τι τον ενδιέφερε ήταν ποιος του το στέλνει και τι του χρειάζεται. Ήταν, έλεγε, ότι εγώ δεν το παίρνω από το ράμφος, από αυτό το βρωμόπουλο;
...το βρωμόπουλο, το οποίο τρέφεται μες στη σηπεία. Θα είχε πεθάνει εκεί, στην έρημο του Γιορδάνου, στο χείμαρρο Χορράθ. Τίποτα. Ποιος το στέλνει; Ο Θεός. Μέσω αυτού του πουλιού, ναι. Να είναι δοξασμένο το όνομά του, που μου στέλνει άρτο και κρέα. Τι πάει να πει άρτο και κρέα; Δεν είχε τίποτα άλλο να του στείλει; Είχε ψάρια; Τι να είναι τάχα το κρέας; Είναι ο άρτος που μέσα έχει το κρέας, που έχει το σώμα του Χριστού. Τον κοινωνούσε. Το έκλεβε από κάνα χασάπη;
Από κάνα χασαπουλιό το κρέας, το ψωμί το έκλεβε ο κόραξ από κανένα φούρνο. Όχι αγγελική, του Πνεύματος του Αγίου, όπως και ο άρτος που μας κοινωνούνε, το σώμα του Χριστού, είναι εκ Πνεύματος Αγίου. Αυτό διδάσκει. Τι θα πάμε να πούμε;
Αυτό επάνω, όχι για αυτόν, για αυτόν που φέρνει το γαϊδουράκι αυτό επάνω του. Όλη αυτή η ετοιμασία, όλη αυτή η περιποίηση, είναι για αυτόν που φέρει το γαϊδουράκι αυτό επάνω του. Άμα το κατεβάσουμε από πάνω του, το γαϊδουράκι θα το βάλουμε στο παχνί για άχυρα. Το καταλαβαίνετε; Δεν φοβόσαστε, λοιπόν, αυτόν τον παπά που κρατάει τον Χριστό στο χέρι του; Τι σεβασμό πρέπει να έχει, εφόσον αξιώνεται να μεταφέρει τον Χριστό, σαν το γαϊδουράκι κι αυτός, έτσι;
