Summary

Elder Ephraim interprets the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) as the story of every baptized Christian who abandons the Father's grace, becomes enslaved to sin, and suffers spiritual death. When the son humbly recognizes his fall and returns, the father restores him completely, showing God's readiness to forgive every repentant sinner; Christians must reject the devil's whispers of despair, because humility, confession, and trust in the Father's compassion open the way to salvation. The fatted calf signifies Holy Communion, through which prepared believers receive Christ's Body and Blood, divine life, and adoption; the angels rejoice over repentance (Luke 15:10), and believers should answer divine mercy by praying for every person and reflecting God's love toward their neighbors.

The talk “The Love and Compassion of God” was delivered abroad.

God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.

Any Christian who does not have the love of God within his heart does not have the life of God in his soul.

His soul.

This great work of God’s love for mankind—God, the Word of God, descending to become man, taking on flesh, dwelling among us, and drawing near to us—was nothing other than the boundless love for mankind revealed by Divine Love.

It is the love of God that protects us and cares for us in all things.

We human beings sin and grieve God; many times we act without reverence. Yet His love for mankind is boundless, and He forgives everything. All of us—and I foremost among you—have grieved that great heart of God which is called love for mankind.

Therefore, as we go forward in life, we must take care not to cause Him again the bitterness of sin. The parable in the Holy Gospel, the parable of the Prodigal Son, is as exact an expression as possible of the love of God the Father for sinful man.

There we see that the Prodigal Son, who represents every sinful person on earth, asked his father to give him the portion of the family estate that belonged to him as a son.

Of course, it was extremely foolish and senseless of him to ask for his share and separate himself from his father’s home, his father’s love, and his father’s care. Thinking himself capable of managing his own life, he departed—but he paid very dearly for his foolishness.

As our Holy Gospel tells us, this prodigal son squandered the whole inheritance while living a deeply sinful life. Sin gives birth to death. The wages of sin is death. The wages of sin is the death of the soul, and many times sin even becomes the cause of bodily death.

After the Prodigal Son had squandered all the property he had received, he was reduced to feeding pigs and living on the carob pods given to them.

In other words, when a person—a Christian—receives the inheritance of God’s grace, when he is counted worthy of Holy Baptism, and then turns away from that grace because he has broken off all communion with God the Father, he ends up becoming a vessel of the devil,

a vessel of sin, living as a prodigal far from God and continually sinking from one sin into another.

Again, we see in the parable that at a certain moment the prodigal came to himself. He regained his senses and understood his error.

While he was committing sin, it seems that he was beside himself—without reason, understanding, or sound judgment. “He came to himself,” our Christ tells us, and he said to himself, thinking it over: “How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, while I am perishing with hunger!” It would be better for me to return. I will not ask my father to call me his child, because I am unworthy.

Instead, I will ask him to regard me as one of his hired servants, one of his servants, for they live so well there. Let me become one of them; that is enough for me. I have no right to ask him to receive me again as a son, because I have lost the dignity of sonship. I squandered everything I had received from my father as my inheritance.

It is enough for me to return and become one of his servants.

After thinking these and many other things, he resolved to set out. Before he had even begun his journey, the father came out of his house and waited outside for him, his arms opened lovingly. So ready is God to receive a sinner.

The prodigal set out on the road of return, the road of salvation. He took the straight path and reached his father’s house. His father received him at once, embraced him, kissed him, and wept over him. The prodigal also wept and began to say: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.”

What does the Father answer? “Forget it all—forget everything you have done. Your return is enough for Me. It is enough that you have come home. You were dead and are alive again; you were lost and are found. That is enough.” All the sins, all the faults, all the squandering of the inheritance—everything was forgotten.

At once, he ordered that his son be bathed. And after his son had been bathed in the radiant robe of adoption as a son.

He ordered that a ring be placed on his hand. Everything changed: the man who had been filthy, a swineherd, became in a single moment, through his return, a child of God.

He became the child of a king, radiant and splendidly adorned.

He had never expected such a thing: such tenderness from his father, such love, such a complete transformation. “What vanity and delusion possessed me when I was far from him!” the Prodigal thought. Finally, the father ordered the fatted calf to be slaughtered, and the great feast celebrating the return of the Prodigal Son began. A magnificent celebration commenced. Everything shone within the Father’s palace, while the son was beside himself with wonder at the miracle of his salvation. And the Father rejoiced in glory.

He rejoiced that his child had come back to life, and he was filled entirely with joy and gladness.

This is only a faint image—almost nothing compared with the reality—of God’s love for sinful man. The heavenly Father stands completely ready for the very moment when a person returns, asks forgiveness, and seeks to come back to Him.

He is ready—more than ready—to forgive and forget everything. A person need only come to himself; that is, he must recognize his faults, humble his way of thinking, acknowledge where he has gone astray, and ask forgiveness. Then God will say to him, “Forget it all, My child. It is enough that you have returned.”

“I forgive everything, now that you have returned to Me.”

But then the other one comes—the enemy of man and the enemy of God. The devil comes with all his wicked cunning, skill, and craftiness, and whispers into the sinner’s ear: “God will not forgive you. You are far too sinful. You have committed terrible crimes, and now severe punishment and Hell await you. Do not go near God at all.”

“You are not worthy even to lift up your eyes, to pray, or to ask forgiveness. God is angry with you”—and he whispers so many other things besides.

The sinner must pay no attention to any of this.

Consider a father or mother whose child returns from sin and a dissolute life, even after that child had insulted the mother, made an obscene gesture at her, struck her, and pushed her away. The moment the child returns, the mother will immediately embrace her child and grant forgiveness. She will not dwell on any of the evil that was done; it is enough that her child has come home in repentance.

If a mother, possessing only a tiny spark of heartfelt love, can show such forgiveness and mercy to her child who went astray and then returned, how much more will God—whose love and compassion are infinite—grant forgiveness, mercy, and loving-kindness!

We must not listen to the whispers of the apostate devil. He never learned humility; he does not know what humility means. That is why he is far from God. From the moment humility makes its dwelling within a person’s logismoi—the realm of his inner thoughts—his return to God begins at once.

Therefore, egotism and pride are the evils that keep us far from God. Let us live the image of the Prodigal Son within our minds and hearts. Then we shall draw from it—or rather, continually draw from it—metanoia, repentance, and the strength to return.

And not only repentance and return: we shall also enrich our hearts with the love of God. We shall know God the Father as our own tender Father, whose love has no measure. Within that love, it is impossible for us to miss our goal.

However much the enemy may whisper that God will not forgive us because we have committed terrible sins in our lives, once we behold the countenance of our heavenly Father in the mirror of the Prodigal Son, all the devil’s logismoi—his intrusive thoughts—will immediately be scattered.

There were once two monks whom the devil led astray. They abandoned the desert and the monastic schema and returned to life in the world.

In time, God looked upon them with mercy and remembered the labors of their ascesis and dedication. He granted them illumination to return. They went back to the skete and confessed their sins. Their spiritual fathers gave each of them a canon, a rule of prayer and repentance: for one year they were to live separately in seclusion, seeing no one, but only praying and receiving a little food.

After they had fulfilled this one-year canon, their fault would be forgiven and they would be permitted to receive Holy Communion. When the year was over, they were brought out from their secluded life of repentance. One appeared radiant; his face was not gaunt but pleasant. The other was utterly worn down.

Their food was the same, and their sins were the same, yet the difference between them was visible in their faces. And they asked one of them, “Father, what were you thinking about while you were shut inside your cell?”

“I was thinking that I had grieved God and condemned my soul to Hell. I was thinking about what awaited me—that I would live eternally with the demons. And as I contemplated myself down in Hell, I lost all my strength.”

“I was filled with deep sorrow, and my tears dried me up.”

They also asked the other, “And you, Father, how did you spend your enclosed repentance?” “I was thinking about the love of God. I thought about where I had been, where the demon had led me, and how the hand of God drew me out and brought me back to the beautiful way of monastic life. I remembered my former life, how far I had fallen, and how God, through His Crucifixion and His immaculate Blood, brought me back here once more. He counted me worthy of repentance; after a year I would receive Holy Communion, be set free, and live with the fathers as I had before. And I rejoiced. That joy kept me from feeling such dryness and dejection.”

Then the fathers concluded that both had attained the same measure of repentance: the one through contemplating Hell, and the other through love for God.

They repented rightly and returned successfully to monastic life. And so we see that when we repent and weep, thinking about our sins, and when we reflect on Hell, its torments, and eternal life down there, separated from God, from the angels, and from the light, all these things reconcile us to God, and God sends us His love.

The same is true when a person weeps out of love for our Father and God: “I thank You that Your love is so great that it brought me back. You did not shrink from my filth, my prodigal living, my blasphemies, or my crimes. Your love reached out over me, saved me, and brought me into the pure life of metanoia—of repentance and return.”

“How could I not rejoice and love Him, my God?”

You see, this path is just as blessed as the other. Thus, through returning in the love of God, acknowledging one’s sin, and recognizing the Father’s love, a person is saved.

A person returns to the road, to the broad highway whose end is the golden gate of the Kingdom of Heaven. And what is the fatted calf that the heavenly Father gives to the returning Prodigal Son?

It is our Holy Communion; it is the Body and Blood of our Christ.

If the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer — he writes this speaking about the Old Testament — could cleanse those who had been defiled, how much more does the blood of Christ cleanse us from every sin. The blood of animals, he says, in the sacrifice of the Old Testament did not forgive sins; it was not in a position to forgive the sins of human beings — that is what the Apostle Paul says. How much more, then, the blood of the Lamb of God, the blood of the God-Man, the blood of our crucified Christ.

How greatly it cleanses, sanctifies, and saves the human person! The tragedy is that we sin against the love of God. So great is God’s love, and yet we do not respond as we should. He has forgiven us all our sins; He forgives them now and will continue to forgive them to the end of our lives. What shall we offer the Lord in return?

And what have we given back in return for this love of God? At the very least, let us give Him thanks, and when we are tested by the love of God, let us say the words of Job, the much-suffering one: As it seemed good to the Lord, so it has come to pass.

“Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Every trial contains within it an expression of God’s love, for no trial, whether deep or severe, is without the love and protection of God. Countless people—innumerable Christians—recognize that their own return, or even the return of their whole family, came through some trial in life.

How deeply we ought to consider that our Christ, so that we might live near Him and remain united with Him, left us His Holy Body and His Precious Blood. By partaking of these Holy Mysteries, we too become gods by grace.

“I said, you are gods, and all of you are sons of the Most High.” By grace and participation, we become children of God.

What we must attend to very carefully, my dear Evangelia, is how we approach Holy Communion.

The Body of Christ is holy, and His Precious Blood is all-holy. But what am I? Who am I? I am a sinful person, wretched and guilty. Yet I approach. How do I approach? If I come in metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession, with the blessing of my spiritual father, then I receive the Body and Blood of Christ. I receive eternal life; I receive the life of God within me.

Through Holy Communion, I become a partaker of the Kingdom of God.

Heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.

To be joint heirs with Christ means that the Christian who receives Christ through the Holy Gifts will, at the Second Coming, dwell together with Him. In other words, wherever Christ is, there too will be the Christian who receives the Holy Mysteries in repentance and returns to God.

Let us continually remember the love of God and live in the love of God; and this love of God will give us courage in life, so that we may face it successfully.

When someone knows that a great ruler loves him,

when he knows that this ruler protects him, helps him, and supports him at every moment,

he walks along his path with great ease and confidence. He is uplifted and filled with joy because that ruler is on his side.

If a person thinks this way about a powerful human being, how much more should we Christians, when we believe absolutely, firmly, and unwaveringly that our Christ—our God—is the One who was crucified, the One who is the mediator between God and mankind.

Let us give our hearts entirely to Christ. He is the God-Man, the One who loved us with perfect love. No one loves us as Christ does.

The proof that Christ loves us is that, when a person repents, He gives the signal for the angelic hosts to rejoice. There is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents. Just think: the angels rejoice when they hear and learn that some sinner, even a great sinner, has repented here on earth and returned to the path of God.

Their joy is beyond words. So great is the love of the angels for us sinners.

Think of the joy of the angel who was appointed at Holy Baptism to guard this sinful person. He never abandoned him. Though the angel kept his distance because of the sin, he never forsook him.

The angel, the guardian of the human soul, is always praying and interceding with God. We see this again in the Holy Gospel, in the parable of the barren fig tree that bore no fruit. The owner of the vineyard comes to the vinedresser and says, “Every year I come and find no fruit. Cut it down,” he says, “so that it does not take up the ground; let us plant something else.” And what does the vinedresser say? “Leave it for one more year.”

“I will put manure around it, dig the soil, and water it, and perhaps it will bear fruit.” “I will wait,” the master said. So it is with the guardian angel. It often seems that the sickle of death has come to reap a sinful person because of his sin.

And the angel pleads, saying, “Lord, leave him a little longer. Give this soul more time. Perhaps he will repent; perhaps he will return; perhaps he will recognize his error and come back to You.” And God waits.

This reveals the angel’s love for the human person. Even while the person reeks of sin, the angel follows close behind.

There was once a holy man who came down from the desert into a city for some spiritual purpose. He saw a young man sitting outside a courtyard and weeping. He understood that this was an angel of God.

He approached him and said, “I believe that you are not a human being, but an angel of God. And since you are an angel of God, why are you weeping?” “I am not a human being as you understand it. I am an angel, the guardian of a soul, of a man, of a Christian.

I sit here and weep because the man whom I was given to guard is sinning inside this house at this very moment. I am waiting for him here so that I may continue to protect him, while I weep and implore God to forgive him, to grant him illumination, and not to let him commit this sin again.”

And the saint of God marveled at the angel’s love for that man. This is why all the innumerable hosts of angels rejoice when one sinful person returns to God.

You see what a God we have; you see what a Christ we have, and what great hope we should place in the love of God, the angels, and the saints. Therefore, let us not despair or lose courage, but let us approach the throne of God’s grace with boldness, seeking mercy and forgiveness not only for ourselves,

but for every person on earth, because all people are children of God; all people are creatures of God. Christ was crucified for everyone. Yet there are also sheep who have gone astray, and they too must return and are in need of prayer. And who will pray for these creatures? Those who have received the mercy of God.

and knowledge of God for others. We who have received mercy through the love of God are obliged before God to pray for every person. Sin is not only the transgression of God’s commandments; it is also a sin when we do not pray for others.

For then we fail to fulfill our love toward every soul. Christ loves the whole world, and for this world He was crucified. Yet we pray only for our own people, and perhaps forget everyone else.

But none of these people are forgotten by the Cross of Christ. Let us kneel, lift up our hands, and pray most fervently with all our heart for every person. We do not know what our prayers may accomplish. People are brought to metanoia, to repentance.

No one has spoken to them about repentance and returning to God. Yet something happens in their life, and they turn around and return. Some prayer has borne fruit. Therefore, we must pray and express our love. Let us become humble images and antitypes—living reflections—of God’s love toward our neighbor.

Let us give honor and glory to God’s love for mankind.

Glory to Your love for mankind, O Lord, which You have poured out upon the earth with such infinite abundance, covering the sins of humanity with Your glory and Your forgiveness. Amen.

Amen.

Πώς να μην χαίρομαι και να μην Τον αγαπώ, τον Θεόν;

Ο άνθρωπος επιστρέφει εις τον δρόμο, εις τη λεωφόρο που έχει σαν τέλος τη χρυσή πύλη της Βασιλείας των Ουρανών. Και ποιος είναι ο μόσχος ο σιτευτός που χαρίζει ο Ουράνιος Πατέρας εις τον επιστρέφοντα Άσωτον Υιόν;

Πόσο καθαρίζει και αγιάζει και σώζει τον άνθρωπο. Το κακό είναι ότι εγκληματούμε στην αγάπη του Θεού. Είναι τόση η αγάπη του Θεού και εμείς δεν ανταποκρινόμεθα όσο χρειάζεται. Μας έχει συγχωρήσει όλα τα αμαρτήματα και μας τα συγχωρεί και θα μας τα συγχωρέσει μέχρι τέλος ζωής. Εμείς τι ανταποδώσουμε στον Κύριο;
