Summary

Elder Ephraim presents Pascha as humanity's passage from earth to heaven through Christ, a foretaste of the eternal joy and light of His Resurrection, perceived only when the heart is purified from passions. Christ is the supreme model of humility: though God and Creator, He became man, washed His disciples' feet, endured humiliation, and accepted death on the Cross. Abba Moses the Ethiopian shows the progress from suppressing anger to genuine meekness through humility and self-reproach. Christians confront egotism through prayer, repentance, self-accusation, and remembrance of death and judgment; persistent use of the Jesus Prayer purifies the heart as God's temple, preparing those who struggle to celebrate the everlasting Pascha with Christ, the angels, and the saints.

A homily on humility, delivered at the Holy Monastery of Philotheou.

On the Divine Resurrection of our Christ. The Pascha of the Lord.

It is the Lord’s Pascha, the Lord’s Pascha. Pascha means passage. The human race received the grace and blessing of God to pass from earth to heaven, for it has been called to immortal life. Our Christ had boundless mercy and compassion on us, and He came down to our earth in order to raise us up to heaven.

Every year we celebrate Holy Pascha. We all await it with great longing, so that we may experience this special joy, feel the light of the divine Resurrection in our souls, and taste a little of the boundless joy of the eternal Pascha.

May we taste and behold a little of the light of Him who illumines the world to come. May we experience even the smallest measure of that eternal joy which the souls in heaven feel—those who were counted worthy to be saved and who already celebrate the eternal Pascha, the Pascha that never ends.

In order truly to experience Pascha and genuinely to behold the light of the divine Resurrection,

we must purify our spiritual senses from every movement of the passions.

“Let us purify our senses, and we shall behold Christ shining forth in the unapproachable light of the Resurrection.” The hymnographer is telling us this: if my heart has not been cleansed, if it has not been rid of that hateful self-love, of the proud and haughty attitude, if the humility of Christ has not settled in, has not come to dwell inside the heart, then the eyes of the soul do not see the light of the Resurrection, and the heart does not feel it.

Christ showed us the way to attain this state: “Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Unless we humble our way of thinking, bow our heads, and believe firmly that we are nothing—unless each of us believes that he is the least of all, the greatest sinner, and the one deserving to go to Hell—then we shall not experience the special joy of the Holy Resurrection or celebrate Pascha mystically and ineffably within the heart. The proudhearted person remains impure before the Lord.

“But He gives grace to the humble.” God hears the prayer of the humble person.

It is especially through humility alone that the heart is purified. Every virtue, every effort, and every act of spiritual self-compulsion has the purification of the heart as its purpose.

And humility is the most powerful medicine of all. Christ bowed the heavens and came down. He came down, He lowered Himself, He humbled Himself. He came near to us as a man. But He was the God-man, God and man. Christ bowed the heavens and came down.

But we human beings—and I first of all—do not bow our necks before the Lord. We do not humble our way of thinking. Pride still lives within us.

Although we struggle to overcome this passion, just when we think we have begun to feel humility, a few moments later we feel pride flaring up again—because we experienced something in prayer, said something good, or believe we accomplished something. Then the sting of pride and vainglory pricks us, puffs us up, and makes us feel that we have achieved something.

A brother was being assailed by logismoi of pride, so he went to a great elder and said, “Geronta, I feel this spirit of pride flaring up within me because I am struggling”—and the brother truly was struggling—“but I cannot overcome it. What must I do?” The elder replied, “Did you create heaven and earth?” “No, Father.” “And yet He who made heaven and earth, who created the spiritual world of the angels and the Kingdom above, and who by His command brought the whole universe from nothingness into being, declared that He is humble and meek.”

“And you are proud—you who are clay and dust, sinful and full of the passions, yet so richly shown mercy by God. You imagine that you are accomplishing something.”

He bent down and washed the disciples’ feet. Christ endured mockery, insults, and scorn from a great multitude of people, and we see Him naked upon the Cross, dying out of love for us. He who could, with a single gesture, return all things to nothingness became so humble that He said nothing and did not open His mouth.

Yet we human beings lift up our heads and believe that we are something.

When the brother heard all these wise counsels, he humbled himself and returned to his cell greatly edified. A person’s nous, the spiritual intellect, is easily defiled and easily cleansed.

The heart, however, is cleansed with difficulty, and it is not easily defiled. It is laden with deep roots of passion. All the passions are rooted in this heart.

That is why we all suffer when God, who desires man’s salvation and hates the death of the human soul, from time to time takes up a kind of spiritual pair of tweezers, seizes the roots of the passions one by one, and tries to uproot them. He does this so that the heart, freed from its passionate condition, may enter into a state of freedom, experience the joy of the Resurrection, and behold with its spiritual eyes the light of the divine Resurrection.

The temptations that arise against us may come from the devil, from one another, or from the world we carry within ourselves. At times temptations and afflictions rise up against us. All these things are medicines.

They are all sent and given by the providence of our good God, so that we may recover the spiritual health we have lost. The health of the soul and the heart is apatheia, freedom from the passions; it is holiness, true health.

This is the health that will continue to exist in the world to come.

We must understand that we have egotism. When a brother throws a sharp word at us,

when the elder, the spiritual father, the instructor and guide—the one called by God to train us in the attainment of apatheia, freedom from the passions—corrects or admonishes you, and you feel turmoil, agitation, distress, pressure, impatience, or anger within yourself, then recognize from the degree of that turmoil the size, depth, breadth, and length of the egotism within you.

When a person is humble, he accepts the word, the correction, and the admonition. If he does not have the strength to rejoice inwardly that he has been counted worthy to receive this medicine—or, rather, to discover whether or not he has egotism—then at least let him be found struggling against it.

In those glorious years when monasticism flourished, the fathers and brothers of the skete decided to test Abba Moses the Ethiopian, to see whether he possessed humility and meekness, and to discover what degree of apatheia, freedom from the passions, he had attained.

They decided to test him. Now Abba Moses had been counted worthy of the priesthood.

One day, as soon as he entered the sanctuary to put on his vestments, they said to him, “What are you doing in here, dark-skinned man, black man? You are not worthy to be in here.” Abba Moses immediately fell silent and left the sanctuary. A few days later they attacked him a second time. The first time he had remained silent, suppressing the rebellion within himself.

The second time he felt free of it. Indeed, he reproached himself and said, “Truly, I am black in body and skin, and black in soul as well. I am unworthy even of the priesthood; I am not worthy to enter this place. The fathers are right to speak to me this way.”

The fathers were waiting for him outside and asked him, “Abba, were you not troubled when we said such things to you?” He answered, “Yes, my fathers. The first time I was troubled, but I suppressed the turmoil and rebellion within me. The second time there was no rebellion. God helped me, and I felt perfect peace. I accused myself and found that I truly was exactly as you had said.”

And the fathers said, “The first state is called freedom from anger, and the second is meekness.”

Thank you.

In such a situation, we see our soul, our heart, rising up in rebellion within us. We must come to understand that we are filled with egotism. And we must not merely recognize it, but make an effort—through prayer and by asking for protection—to receive the strength to confront this egotism and quell the rebellion of pride.

We must take Christ Himself as our model: “Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart.” And when we see the rebellion of egotism, its anger, and the irrational logismoi, the intrusive thoughts it produces, then we must practice self-reproach and accuse ourselves.

Why this turmoil? Why these logismoi, these intrusive thoughts? What do the anger, the wrath, and the intrusive thoughts reveal? Egoism, you loathsome beast, you dwell within me—and when will I slay you? When will I take up the true struggle? When will I take up the sword of the Spirit, the word of God and the example of God, and put this fearsome beast to death?

At the hour of death, we shall find this beast standing before us. Through our conscience, we shall see it reproaching us because we did not struggle as much as we should have, at the proper time, when we were called to fight this beast and kill it.

Vile egotism is what causes all the evils in our lives. Let us examine ourselves, and we shall see egotism in everything we do—in the depths, at the beginning, and in the motive. Let us accuse ourselves and bring ourselves low. Let us know that we are clay and earth, nothing more.

Earth and clay are trampled underfoot by people who are themselves made of clay. God possesses the divine nature, yet He became so humble. We, who are lowly by nature, lift our heads high and say, “There is no one but me.” When we are not preferred in some matter, we see the beast within us rebel, and a whole chain of questions begins: “Why? Why?”

“Why? Why? Why me?” This “me” must be strangled. Monasticism possesses abundant power to strangle it, provided that we take this power into our hands and, through our God, win this great victory.

That victory will be eternal.

The humble will see God in the world to come.

Every proud person will be shut out of the Kingdom of Heaven. When the time comes to give an account, he will be asked whether he was aware of his egotism, whether he saw it within himself, and then whether he fought the good fight and followed the path and the guidance that lead to humility.

Yet when rebellion rises within us, when we see the beast inside us, we do not want to strangle it. Many times we deliberately blind ourselves; we pretend not to see and turn a blind eye. But it is egotism. Why, my child, do you not undertake the struggle that is needed?

Our life is not in our own hands. We may lose it at any moment. The marketplace where one trades for the Kingdom of Heaven may close. And afterward, with death, when our eyes have closed, we will realize how egotism has destroyed us.

But we will not be able to turn back.

We will ask to return. We will ask for just one minute out of the many years we lived—one minute to utter a few words of metanoia and acknowledgment, to ask forgiveness. But that minute will not be given to us.

And then weep — but alas, by then it is too late.

We have not known this in actual experience; we have not felt the reality of death in our hearts. We have not felt what the soul will experience as it ascends and passes through the aerial toll houses.

We have no such thing; no thoughts have come to us from God by inspiration. What will the soul feel at that moment, when it grasps with unshakable certainty that it is not coming back again to life on earth, but is entering, is being led, into eternity — that that life will have no end; and, if it has failed, that it will live forever in hell, that its companions will be the demons, that it will never see, that...

It will never know or behold God. At the same time, it will be fully aware that all its brethren are in heaven, celebrating the eternal Pascha, dwelling within the glory of God, clothed in garments of purest white—the radiant purity of soul that God will grant to those souls who put on the wedding garment.

It will know that the souls of its brethren are celebrating the wedding feast with Jesus, their God; that they are within the heavenly bridal chamber; and that this radiant life will never end. We have not known these realities, these thoughts, these feelings. To our souls, they somehow seem imaginary. Our hearts seem spiritually deadened and unable to feel. Sometimes...

Many times I experienced this state, not during prayer, but while I was asleep. I would awaken in the middle of sleep, and my nous—the spiritual intellect—was not merely perfectly clear, but something far beyond that.

Usually, when a person wakes in the middle of sleep, his mind is darkened and clouded. That did not happen to me. My nous and heart were in such a state that I truly felt I had departed this life and was entering eternity, together with the uncertainty: What will happen now? Will I see the Judge? If I fail and am condemned to Hell, what then? Eternity.

Then I truly felt what it meant to depart, to stand before the Judge, to face Hell and eternity. It was something I cannot express to you in words.

Later that day, I thought about it and said to myself, “This is what my soul will experience when I close my eyes. What must I do now? If, while still alive, I had such a fearful and inexpressible sense of these things—of this reality and truth—what will happen when I truly depart this life and find myself outside the body?” All this reveals how tightly the eyes of our soul are closed, so that we do not perceive these things—not that we do not believe.

We grasp all these things intellectually, but the heart remains untouched. Why does it remain untouched?

Because it has not been purified—not completely, nor even in part.

That is why it does not feel.

We have not labored; we have not shown patient endurance through the pain involved in healing our egotism. The heart has not suffered or endured as the root of egotism was torn out. That is precisely why we have not seen these fruits.

We must take seriously the need, little by little, to recognize and see the egotism within us, to take a stand against it, and to do battle with it. When we are corrected or admonished, we must look deeply within ourselves, accuse ourselves, chastise ourselves, strike at our egotism, and take the blame upon ourselves.

We must justify the person who corrected and rebuked us, and thank God for carrying out this work of purification. And indeed, as we wage this struggle, little by little, by the grace of Jesus, we shall be delivered, rescued, and set free. The heart will be liberated, the roots of the passions will be uprooted, and we shall reach a state in which we experience the health of the soul and perceive inwardly the realities of the world to come.

And then we will be able to see the light of the Divine Resurrection. This light exists. “Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ…”

We say this and confess it—but do we experience it? Do we see it? Personally, I do not.

But we shall see it when we are counted worthy of purification.

Let us struggle against egotism, armed with prayer—with the Jesus Prayer, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”—and, if possible, let us never cease, night or day. When the soul is absent from the body, the body stinks, becomes infested with worms, decays, and turns into a source of infection.

When prayer is absent from the soul, the soul suffers the very same things.

Let us always keep before our eyes the question of how to strike and kill this beast within us—egotism. Then let us pray, filling with spiritual fragrance the temple of God, which is the human heart and soul, as well as this body, so that in body and in spirit we may glorify the Holy God.

This requires struggle, and we ourselves, as those who bear the primary responsibility, must be the first to undertake the initial and principal struggle.

We must set the good example, and then those who follow must also struggle, so that all of us together, all the brethren, may be counted worthy in the world to come to celebrate eternal life in the Jerusalem above, within the unapproachable and surpassingly radiant light. There may we celebrate eternally and without end the Pascha of our salvation—the Pascha through which we have been granted the grace to escape and be delivered from Hell.

Not merely to escape Hell, but also to live in the boundless joy of God, where the angels keep watch, sing hymns, and stand before God in Trinity, offering up doxologies and hymns without end, together with all the saints.

Προς τι η ταραχή; Προς τι οι λογισμοί; Τι φανερώνει ο θυμός και η οργή και οι λογισμοί; Εγωισμέ, ω θηρίο απαίσιο, μέσα μου κατοικείς, και πότε θα σε σκοτώσω; Πότε θα αναλάβω τον πραγματικό αγώνα; Πότε θα πάρω την μάχαιρα του Πνεύματος, το ρήμα του Θεού, το παράδειγμα του Θεού, και να θανατώσω αυτό το φοβερό θηρίο;

Παρότι την ώρα που βαλλόμεθα από επανάσταση, παρότι βλέπουμε το θηρίο μέσα μας, δεν θέλουμε να το πνίξουμε. Πολλές φορές εθελοτυφλούμε μόνιμα, κάνουμε πως δεν βλέπουμε, κάνουμε στραβά μάτια. Μα είναι εγωισμός. Γιατί, παιδί μου, δεν κάνεις τον αγώνα που χρειάζεται;

Στη θεωρία τα πιάνουμε όλα αυτά. Αλλά η καρδιά μένει αμέτοχη. Γιατί είναι αμέτοχη;
