Summary
Elder Ephraim recalls how his elder taught the monks to invoke Christ continually, joining the Jesus Prayer to courageous vigils, watchfulness, mourning, and restraint. Nighttime prayer is especially fruitful because silence frees the mind from daily cares and enables contemplation of God, and persistent invocation of Christ's name can open the spiritual senses to grace, revealing creation as a proclamation of God's glory. Humility is the indispensable foundation of progress, while resentment toward correction exposes pride that must be healed through patient acceptance and repentance. When Christ's name reigns in the heart, grace restores the fallen person and grants divine peace, and the audible Jesus Prayer strengthens the brotherhood by discouraging idle talk, inspiring mutual vigilance, and establishing authentic love in Christ.

This talk on prayer was given at the Holy Monastery of Philotheou.
When we were with our elder at Nea Skete, his constant counsel, exhortation, encouragement, and practice had one purpose: he continually and earnestly watched over us, urging us to say the Jesus Prayer and to keep vigil courageously.
He had implanted very deeply within us the meaning of prayer and nepsis—watchfulness—through vigil.
He would tell us, “When you see a monk keeping vigil and praying with nepsis, do not regard him as an earthly man, but as an angel of God. For the angels in Heaven ceaselessly and eternally sing the praises of the Thrice-Holy God, with boundless gladness and rejoicing and with theoria, the vision of God.”
“In the same way,” he told us, “monks must keep vigil, sing praises, practice nepsis, mourn for their sins, and weep by night as well as by day. But the night bears more fruit.”
This is because nature is still, and especially because, when a person rests from the cares of the day, the nous—the spiritual intellect—also rests from the distractions and toil of the day.
When you keep vigil rested and watchful, you get much more out of it. Our Elder used to keep an eye on us, to see whether we were praying unceasingly. He didn't give us a lot of theory — I mean long teachings, very beautiful ones. No, he spoke only for a short while, but his teaching had a sharp edge to it and drove straight at its target. Once, in those days, he said to one of the brothers of our community, 'Say the prayer out loud; I can't hear you.' And the brother said, 'Come now, Elder, are we really going to say it out loud, with our lips, at this point?'
“After so many years in the monastic life?”
“My child, if you are ashamed to say the Jesus Prayer because praying aloud seems like something for beginners, and you imagine yourself to be advanced, true shame lies in not saying the prayer, in letting our nous wander about in pride, and in allowing our mouths never to cease from talking. Is that not shameful? That is shameful both in the eyes of God and in the eyes of men.”
And in the end, they were not persuaded to say the prayer out loud.
One brother would say it without rest, unceasingly. And one day, even though grace came at intervals and in different ways, this is how the grace of the Holy Spirit made its visitation.
One day, after he had invoked the name of Christ aloud for a long time, the eyes both of his soul and of his body—his bodily eyes—were opened so fully that he began to see everything very differently. But he could not explain how this happened.
Everything he saw and heard seemed strange, touched by the supernatural: the little birds singing, the flowers in bloom, the trees with their blossoms and fragrance, the sun, the radiant day—everything spoke of the glory of God.
He saw all these things as though he were beholding Paradise.
It was a revelation, an uncovering, the manifestation of a Mystery so deeply hidden from us because we do not see with our spiritual eyes.
“Let everything that breathes praise the Lord”—both the animal kingdom and the whole realm of nature.
They spoke of the glory, the majesty, the greatness, the beauty, and the splendor of God.
He was so overwhelmed and beside himself that he could not speak.
Tears streamed from his eyes—not tears for his sins, but tears at the beauty of God.
How much of this revelation of the beauty of God could the human heart endure?
And Adam too, when he was in God’s Paradise, experienced the whole of Paradise as theoria, as a tangible divine vision of God. His spirit rejoiced and exulted whenever he entered deeply into each thing, into every created being, and heard within it the voice of his Creator. So it was once, when Saint Nektarios of Pentapolis was living on earth and had come to his monastery on Aegina...
The nuns asked him to explain to them what the words 'Let every breath praise the Lord' mean. He promised them, 'I will tell you — just wait.'
And one night, while they were keeping vigil outside, the Saint went a little farther away to offer his own prayer. Then, for a moment, the nuns, in a supernatural manner...
without being able to explain it, they heard it, they felt it, they sensed the whole creation as one breath, as a kind of humming, as something beyond nature. Only then were they assured that this is the explanation of the words, "Let every breath praise the Lord."
All of them, with one single breath, were praising the Lord — the Creator, the One who fashioned them.
Hello, everyone.
We read in the writings of our Fathers that they kept vigil throughout the night, and often continued throughout the whole day, without realizing how the night and the day had passed. Time was reduced to nothing, because their nous had undergone a displacement.
Their nous, the spiritual intellect, was moved: it broke free from earthly things and was carried into the other world.
And according to David, a thousand years are reckoned as one day and as a portion of the night.
A thousand years in this world are like a single moment in the other world. The angels offer praise without ceasing. They do not know what time means. When a person prays, prayer is the glory and the beauty of the Christian, and especially of the monk.
A monk who does not pray does not possess this beauty and loveliness in his soul and in his nous. What does the beauty of the nous mean? The beauty of the nous is revealed when, during vigil and prayer, it is transported toward God and toward the other world: the spiritual world, which has no affinity or connection with this material world.
When the Holy Spirit overshadows a person, this transposition of the nous, this shifting of the mind over to God, does not need years; it is not measured in years. The mind is in direct contact with the Divine Light and with the Divine Reality itself.
It journeys through supernatural and transcendent things; it dwells upon them and is nourished, made beautiful, filled with radiance, adorned, and fragrant, and it passes beyond itself.
Prayer accomplishes all these things. Blessed prayer is the foundation, the starting point, the place from which the soul is launched toward the other world.
What does this prayer not accomplish? What does it not set right? What does it not set in motion? The devil has singled out this prayer and seeks to make it cease. This is the battle cry of the legions of demons.
They all cry out with one voice: “We must put an end to the name of Jesus, so that it is no longer spoken or heard.”
“This name must not be heard; it must be reviled.”
But Christ, from the other side, cries out: “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, I also will confess him before My Father who is in heaven.”
What a great thing this is, and what a great promise!
“Whoever calls upon Me now—and this is a confession of My divinity—I will acknowledge him and vindicate him before My Father and before My angels, and he will receive the crown.”
The triumphal hymns of the angels will resound for this victor who has kept the divine law. And you see how the demons suffer when the name of Christ is heard. They are thrown into turmoil and feel torment within their very being.
The devil rises up within them and throws them into turmoil, just as he does to us when he enters into a person—indeed, in his very hypostasis. He hurls the person to the ground; the person foams at the mouth, the eyes become distorted, and he grows wild. Many people together cannot restrain him, and not even iron chains can hold him.
He becomes one man, and all of them together cannot subdue him when the demon takes hold of him. And when the name of Christ takes hold of him, watch the tempter then, and see how it throws him into confusion.
This is the pain, this torment of possession, that the demon feels when the prayer of Christ is heard—especially when a person says it with longing, with love, and with the fervent confession that Christ must reign.
Why did He go up on the Cross? “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM — that I am He.”
This is what He said in His Holy Gospel. In a manner worthy of God, He made it known to us: “The time will come when you will crucify Me and raise Me upon the Cross; then you will know the power of My divinity and the power of My divine name.”
“At His name every knee shall bow, in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.” And then every tongue, every nation, and every person will worship and confess that Christ is the Judge of the living and the dead.
Blessed and truly happy is the person who confesses the name of Christ throughout his life,
whether he is sinful or not, however heavy the record of his offenses may be. When he confesses the name of Christ, Christ Himself will wipe away that burden and his guilt.
Blessed is the person whose sins have been forgiven, whose sins have been pardoned. And how are sins forgiven? Sins melt away when a person cries out for help to his Lord and God.
And when he calls on Him, Christ grants him metanoia, repentance; He grants him that regenerating and renewing repentance, with tears, with penthos, with mourning for sin. And after that state of mourning and tears, He leads him into joy, and after the joy, into the broad expanse of divine love. He moves from one state to the next, and all of this, and so much more, is born and produced by prayer, by nothing else, by the name of Christ.
What were the scribes and the Pharisees saying to the Apostles, when they arrested them and put them on trial and threatened them? "Do not speak in this name" — stop talking about this name.
“No,” the courageous Apostle Peter answers them. “We cannot obey you. We must obey God rather than men.”
We will go on confessing, we will go on preaching what we have seen and heard, and no one is going to shut our mouths. And that is exactly what came of it: the sons of the devil hung him upside down, head down and feet up.
To bear witness even to the point of martyrdom, as the Apostle Andrew did, and to endure a death like that.
And the rest of the Apostles and the martyrs died in other ways; for that name they suffered everything. And even now we call out the name of Christ. If we could see with our own eyes what happens invisibly, we would say truly and truly, both now and forever.
The name of Christ will throw Hell into turmoil.
‥
‥
This is what we preach, what we proclaim, and what we proclaim above all when we cry out the name of Christ. And this must be firmly established in our lives: the name of Christ, night and day—“Lord Jesus Christ…” Do you see?
It is a confession—that is all. What could be better than this? To confess our Christ, to proclaim Him, and to fill the air with the beauty of Christ’s divinity; and, in spirit, to cry: “Have mercy, Lord, upon my sin. Mercy and forgiveness, Lord. Lord Jesus Christ, save me.”
Well then, when a Christian cries out in this way—and especially a monk—how could Christ overlook that person and not send him His gifts? How could his nous not be transported? How could he fail to know His light, to swim in that light, in the dazzling darkness of divine radiance, and there behold Christ as He truly is? Of course, at the beginning of his confession and his journey,
At the beginning, as the name of God is being firmly established within us, there is toil, hardship, struggle, and resistance from legions of demons seeking to make us stop. The labor of prayer continues for a time, throughout the period of orally invoking the divine name.
Yet afterwards there comes a fullness of Christ, when prayer is accompanied successfully and comprehensively. The whole attentiveness of one's life will bring, in due time and when God visits, it will bring the benefit.
We do not yet know that benefit. But the eyes of the soul cannot fail to open. As we said at the beginning, prayer must be accompanied by vigil. We must keep watch and train ourselves through prayer and theoria, divine contemplation, together with restraint—complete and general restraint, including restraint of all five senses.
Let us practice self-control with the mouth as well, and there a twofold self-control; but above all, self-control in our thinking, so that we do not let the mind roam over the whole world.
When the tongue speaks excessively, how can the nous enter hesychia, inner stillness? And even when the mouth is closed, if the nous roams around the whole world, how can it possess the capacity and purity to be raised into theoria, the contemplation of God?
We need comprehensive restraint and general attentiveness. We must watch what we say, what we think, and how we conduct ourselves with one another. How do we keep our obedience? Do we possess the necessary fear of God? Do we attend to our conscience and examine it? Does our conscience rebuke us for our deeds and our logismoi, our intrusive thoughts? From time to time, do we take account of ourselves? What do we find? Are we saying the Jesus Prayer?
Where does the nous wander? How did I speak today? With whom did I converse? What escaped my lips? And wherever the pointer of this inner computer stops, it shows us: here you judged someone; here you engaged in idle talk; here you became angry; here you failed to perform your obedience properly.
Here you were careless, here you failed to keep watch, here your mind was on one thing when it should have been on another — I have sinned, forgive me; I have sinned, my Lord, forgive me; I won't do it again; help me; grant me attentiveness; I repent — and so many other things like that.
In this way, a person identifies what he must work on and receives strength to deal with things better. If he remains attentive, his response will certainly bring improvement the next day, then still further improvement, and so on, until eventually, in the natural course of things, a day comes when he is no longer at fault in anything so serious.
But first and foremost, we must examine with the greatest care whether we possess the virtue of humility. This is the principal point to which we must all give our attention. Egoism and pride corrupt everything that is called good and excellent.
Humility is the green light. The red light is pride, egoism, and vainglory. With these, we cannot advance. When the red light is removed and the green light is given, progress begins again.
And this is how we shall see that we have pride and egoism.
When a brother says something to you—whether it is contemptuous or corrective, and however it may be expressed—if you are disturbed within, if you become bitter, if the ego rises in revolt, and if you answer back either outwardly or inwardly, this is clear evidence that there is a wound of egoism and pride in your heart.
By God’s allowance, that word is medicine. It is the alcohol poured into the wound, and that is why it hurts. Yet the pain is beneficial. If we receive it with the right frame of mind, the wound is cauterized for our benefit.
Tomorrow that same alcohol, that same word, will hurt us less. It will hurt less and less; the day after that, less still, and little by little the wound is cauterized and healed. But when the pain makes us react, makes us answer back, makes us grow bitter, makes us feel wounded, makes us indignant, it means we have not accepted the medicine, we cannot bear the rebuke, and the condition only gets worse.
The next time something similar happens, the wound, the pain, will be even greater. It spreads, and so the whole condition grows sharper. And when it's left untreated, it reaches the point where a person can't bear anything at all — whatever comes their way, whatever stands in front of them.
Therefore, humility opens the door through which we may advance into the inner depths of God. Our prayer—the name of Christ—will flow and pour forth from us. Humility will support it, steer it rightly, and guide it without error, so that the prayer may bear fruit.
We invoke the name of Christ upon the foundation of humility: I am a sinful person; I am guilty, enslaved to the passions, wounded, a thief, unclean, and blind in soul. I cry out to my Christ so that I may see, so that my eyes may be illumined, my wound healed, and the sentence against me erased from my record; so that I may be made well, for I am sick; so that I may be cleansed of my filth and become fragrant. This is why I cry out—not because I am something important. And where did I get whatever I have? As the Apostle Paul says, “What do you have that you did not receive? And if you received it, why do you boast as though you had not received it?” If everything we possess comes from God, then our very being also comes from God.
It's not that we were something, some kind of pre-existent matter that God took and shaped, and out came human beings; we were nothing, if we're going to say it as it is. God, as Creator, made us into individuals very, very easily, and He did it out of nothing. Whatever we were, we were under obligation to serve the Lord.
I belong to God. With my hands I serve, I work, I minister to my brothers, I do a work of love — I am God's hands. I run to carry out the task I've been given, and I am God's feet. I speak a couple of words about God, and I am God's mouth. I think rightly about God and about my brothers — and even my mind is His creation.
Therefore, I have nothing of my own. I am a zero—a complete and perfect zero.
But if Christ places a one before this zero, we become a ten and receive the highest mark.
Zero becomes ten, and we excel as we walk along His path.
The zero acquires hypostasis, a real existence. And when God blesses it, it acquires a divine mode of existence. It receives grace and participation in God. What beauty, what splendor then fills the nous and heart of man! Christ reigns there, and God’s kindness, goodness, blessedness, and majesty spread throughout the human heart; and man becomes one with the Savior.
Everything else fades away; everything disappears, and he feels only the Lord within him.
But then, through carelessness or error, he may commit some fault, some transgression, some sin. Yet a fall does not happen unless pride has first entered in, unless a proud thought has risen within him.
When sin occurs, God withdraws His grace, and everything is shaken. The foundations of the soul tremble, and everything within becomes desolate. The person feels a complete collapse. But when he humbles himself again, recognizes his fall, repents, changes his ways, feels compunction, and weeps bitterly like Peter, the Lord once more looks upon him with merciful eyes. He sends His Spirit again, renewing and restoring him.
Everything is in the hands of Almighty God.
That is why, when we call upon the name of God and hold firmly to the foundation of humility, we walk straight toward the divine throne, toward that divine transferring of the nous, the spiritual intellect, and of the heart to the King. Let us watch the rudder carefully, so that it takes no damage, so that we do not slip away from humility. Let our mindset be humble, lowered, down low: I am earth and ashes, clay and nothing more.
And what value does clay have? Mud is trampled underfoot by people and crushed beneath wheels. From this mud I became a human being, this exalted creation of God, in whom the spiritual and material worlds are joined together. Through God I become great and glorious; without God, I am clay, trampled underfoot by men.
May the name of Christ reign within us—that blessed name, overflowing with grace. May it become our food and drink, our clothing and oxygen; may it become our life, our heart, our nous—may it become everything to us.
For when that Name becomes all things to us, then we will gain the One who created all things. And when Christ reigns over the heart through His divine Name, then peace reigns — the peace that surpasses all understanding. Christ reigns, and all things are made subject to Him.
Everything is subject to Him, the passions and our weakness. But this is a perfection, an unending perfection.
Yet we shall be more than content if we hold fast to the name of Christ,
that we keep a humble mind, that we mourn for our sins, and that we feel the peace of God in our soul. I am content; I am one of the nobodies, one of the least of the monks.
And that state of soul is more than enough, if the Lord grants it to us.
Let us struggle with all our strength. Only if Christ prevails in our life will things fall into place. Our thoughts, our works, our words, the company we keep, everything will settle into the right and saving rhythm.
If Christ is absent—if Christ is not in our life or in our disposition, and if He does not illumine us—everything will go astray.
Christ: either you are in the light or you are in the darkness, my beloved; there is nothing in between. This is the teaching we have received from Christ and from our Fathers, and let us pray that we may show it in our lives. Let us cry out the name of Christ our God; and when a monk cries out that name, the whole atmosphere and the whole place is filled with blessing.
It is not only that person who is personally benefited; as the name is heard, so the benefit spreads. My own nous may be occupied with sinful thoughts, but then I hear a brother calling upon Christ. What am I doing? Where is my nous going? Why is it wandering aimlessly here and there? He is striving with all his might for the Kingdom of Heaven, while my nous is idly wandering here and there.
I get caught up in idle talk, and then I hear the brother calling out. What am I doing? Have I come to my senses? For what purpose did I come here?
I came to confess Christ in deed and in word. So I begin to change, and I too begin to say the Jesus Prayer. To whom do I owe this change? Do I not owe it to that brother who helped me by saying the Jesus Prayer aloud?
When the cats are silent, the mice dance. When the name of Christ is not invoked aloud, the demons seize us and plant things in our minds. They put words into our mouths, making us engage in idle talk, tease one another, and laugh foolishly. They push us toward self-will and individualism, and make us cease to live as monks.
But when Christ is heard from here and from there, it is like dogs barking: when they bark, the wild beasts keep their distance and thieves do not draw near. And the stronger the dog is, and the more courageously it barks, the farther away the enemies remain.
The sheep graze wonderfully and without fear, while the shepherd plays his flute. None of this would be possible without those animals barking and driving the enemy away. In the same way, a monastery is a spiritual sheepfold, and the fathers are a flock. According to Abba Isaiah, zeal is the watchdog—the dogs that bark.
Zeal shows itself in putting into practice both the active ascetic life, praxis, and the contemplation, the theoria, of the name of Christ, and in keeping the thought and the vision of God alive within us. We will say the prayer; we do not waste time in idle talk. And if someone does want to chatter idly, how is he going to go and speak to a man who is praying? He thinks to himself and says: 'Ah, let me ruin his prayer now, let me disturb him.'
He regards that as a crime.
And so he himself is guarded from idle talk, while the other person is restrained as well. Each one helps the other. That is why we are called brothers, and that is why we have gathered here. Christ has brought us together so that we may help one another.
‘Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.’ ‘A brother helped by a brother is like a fortified city.’ Thus, a monastery will become firm and strong when love reigns.
This happens when we have love in our souls. And when will this love come? When Christ, who is love, reigns within us. If Christ does not reign within us, we do not possess true love. True love is not merely liking one another because our ideas agree, or because we sit together talking about this and that.
People call that love because they share certain interests. No, that love is sickly; when a particular situation or circumstance arises, people quarrel and separate. But the love Christ grants is founded upon Christ.
Christ is the bond that unites the two persons.
The Jesus Prayer, then, will grant us every good thing, including humility and brotherly love. Therefore, night and day, from the moment our eyes open after sleep, we must confess Christ, breathe Christ, praise Christ—the name of Christ.
And when a person is nourished and given drink in this way, he can never die.

Πόσο μπορούσε η καρδιά να αντέξει αυτή την αποκάλυψη του κάλλους του Θεού;
Όταν η γλώσσα ομιλεί πολλά, πώς ο νους θα ησυχάσει; Και όταν κλείνει το στόμα και ο νους γυρίζει όλη την υφήλιον, πώς θα έχει τη δυνατότητα και την καθαρότητα να μεταφερθεί στη θεωρία Του;
Εγκράτεια περιεκτική και γενική προσοχή· να προσέχουμε το τι λέμε, το τι σκεπτόμεθα, πώς συναναστρεφόμεθα ανάμεσά μας. Πώς τηρούμε την υπακοή μας; Έχουμε τον απαιτούμενο φόβον Θεού; Προσέχουμε τη συνείδησή μας, την ελέγχουμε; Μας ελέγχει η συνείδηση πάνω στα έργα και στους λογισμούς μας; Κάνουμε ταμείο κάθε τόσο να δούμε τι; Λέμε την ευχή;
Πιάνομαι στην αργολογία και ακούω τον αδελφό να φωνάζει. Τι κάνω; Είμαι στα καλά μου; Για ποιον σκοπό ήρθα εδώ;
Ήρθα να ομολογήσω Χριστόν, πράξει και λόγω, και αρχίζω να μεταβάλλομαι και αρχίζω κι εγώ να λέγω την προσευχή. Αυτή η αλλαγή μου σε ποιον οφείλεται; Δεν οφείλεται σε αυτόν τον αδελφό που με βοήθησε με την προφορική ευχή που φωνάζει;
