Summary
In the fifth lecture, Fr. Athanasios interprets Revelation 1:5-6 through Exodus 19:6, Isaiah 61:6, and 1 Peter 2, arguing that Christ came not only for moral improvement but to constitute believers as a royal priesthood and kingdom offered to the Father. He distinguishes Christianity as revelation and kingdom rather than a humanly devised religion, and explains how Baptism and Chrismation make every believer a participant in Christ's prophetic, priestly, and royal offices. The lecture also differentiates the general priesthood of the faithful from the ordained liturgical priesthood, rejects political readings of the Kingdom of God, and presents the believer's self-offering as the sacrifice proper to the living temple of the Holy Spirit.

But he does all this because he loves us; that is, it belongs to the one who loves us and washed us from our sins with his blood. What belongs to the one who loves us and washed us from our sins with his blood? The glory and the dominion unto the ages of ages, as the prologue comes to its close.
The Word of God, my beloved, that is why he stood among us, Jesus Christ, the faithful Witness and the Firstborn of the dead; the Word of God who became man came in order to give his blood upon the Cross, to cleanse us from our sins, because he loved us. I underline this, because he loved us.
There is no other motive or driving force in God outside of love, and in order to express his love God gave his Son upon the Cross, the Son who became man. But, my beloved, he did not only cleanse us; that is only one side, the negative side, so to speak, of God's love.
God also went forward in a positive way in this offering of his. And this positive offering is that he makes us, who have turned to him and accepted his blood to be cleansed, he makes us a Royal Priesthood, a Royal Priesthood. And he made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father; that is, he established us as a kingdom of priests unto his God and Father.
My beloved, this is an exceedingly important passage, a most theological passage, and I will ask you very much to pay attention here, to the point that Christ makes us a kingdom of priests, a royal priesthood, before the Father.
In these verses, first of all, we see with great clarity the very essence and the work of Christianity. That is, Christianity is shown here to be not a religion, but a kingdom. This is the essence of Christianity. Christians are kings and priests. This is the work of Christianity. If they ask you what the essence of Christianity is, you will answer that it is a kingdom. And what is the work of Christianity? To establish its citizens, the faithful, as kings and priests.
You will say to me, these are very great things. Indeed, my beloved, they are very great, as great as heaven itself, that is how great all this is. Tell me then, if at some point I learn that I am a Christian, meaning I am a citizen of a kingdom, I am a priest and a king, as you will see in the analysis that follows, then how could I still say that Christianity is a religion like all the natural religions?
And I have already explained this to you: religion means something that arises by human notion, that is, by human invention. All religions, my dear friends, are products of human invention, of human invention. Christianity is revelation; but it is not a religion, it is a kingdom.
And therefore, I as a Christian am not someone who will simply settle comfortably into my life. Let us notice this. To be a Christian does not mean someone who pays his taxes, does not bother the police or the courts, and is a good and upright citizen. After all, this is how we have been taught to think of the Christian, as the good and decent citizen.
But that is only a simple side-effect of being a Christian, that one becomes a good and decent citizen; the two are quite different things. Did Christ really come into the world for this, to make us good and noble men, as Plato used to say?
My beloved, if Christ came for this reason, then I ask you, He would have been unnecessary. The Fathers themselves say this. Christ would have been unnecessary to come. Plato would have made us good and noble citizens. But my beloved, Christianity is not simply here to make me a good citizen; rather, it will establish me as a king and a priest of God, something that those outside Christianity, not even the greatest philosophers, ever imagined.
Christians, then, are officeholders, because through Christ, God establishes His Kingdom upon the earth. When we pray, we say, 'Thy Kingdom come.' Perhaps here I should make a clarification, so that you do not suppose that I am about to announce to you the platform of some Christian political party, that now, in view of possible elections, you must know how to vote, and so on. Never expect such things from me.
When we speak of the Kingdom of God upon the earth, we mean anything but what political parties mean, who seek to establish Christianity upon the earth. It is far from that. I have explained this to you on other occasions. This is not the moment to speak of it again.
I will say only this much by way of example: as far as the East is from the West, so far is the theology of the Kingdom of God from the political parties that attempt to be established, supposedly to set up the Kingdom of God upon the earth.
Of course, I know that perhaps some brothers may not agree with what I am saying; but I tell you, it is not a matter of whether we agree or disagree, but of what is the truth. This is what I am telling you. After all, I do not sit at this desk for any other reason than to tell you the truth, for if I had to tell you things that were not true, it would be a needless labor to come down here and tell you what I tell you.
No, only the truth, as the ages have lived it in interpreting the Word of God. So then, we pray, 'Thy Kingdom come,' and Christians co-reign with Christ and become priests who offer their worship to the Holy Trinitarian God.
But we will ask: where do these offices come from, and when, and from where do we Christians receive these offices? And because these are truly offices of great dignity, I draw your attention to this in a special way. First of all, the source of these offices is the Lord Jesus Christ himself.
When the Lord came into the world, that is, when He came as man, He was anointed by the Father; He was anointed as man. For the Word of God is not anointed by the Father, since the Word of God is equal in honor with the Father.
We are always speaking about the human nature, that is, about Jesus Christ; when we say Jesus Christ, we always mean the human nature. And so Jesus Christ, the Son and Word (Logos) of God and perfect man, was anointed by the Father; He was anointed with a threefold office, that of Prophet, of High Priest, and of King.
This threefold office of our Lord is attested both by the Old Testament and chiefly by the New Testament. I will refer only to a single passage, the one we are now developing, so that we may grasp that indeed this threefold office of Jesus Christ is attested.
We had analyzed last time that through the threefold descriptive title, the Faithful Witness, which I read to you earlier and which we analyzed last time, the title Faithful Witness assigns to Christ his prophetic office, because he came to bear witness to the truth and to declare what the truth is; that is, he came to speak.
A prophet is not only one who foretells the future. That meaning of prophet, the one who foretells the future, is far too narrow. In the broad sense, a prophet is one who speaks about God; this is the one who is called a prophet.
If you wish, the word prophet is found also in Greek literature, in the pre-Christian writings, and in Homer. The word prophet does not always mean the one who foretells the future, but the one who speaks.
And of course many times he may have said something about the future; it comes from prophimi, which means to foretell. But prophecy is not always foretelling something; it can simply mean to speak. The greater part of the prophets' work is not the future; it is the present.
I told you this in the introduction to the themes we have this year. So then, Christ is the Faithful Witness, which is his prophetic office. He came to bear witness to the truth. Moreover, he is supremely the teacher of heavenly realities.
Second, the Firstborn of the Dead. By this designation, the high priestly office of our Lord is given to him, where the Lord himself is both the one who sacrifices and the victim. He is the one who offers, as we say very pointedly in the Divine Liturgy, the one offering and the one offered. He who offers and he who is offered. It is of course incomprehensible how he is both the one who sacrifices and the victim, but this is understood only in the divine-human nature of Christ, the God-Man.
And third, the Ruler of the Kings of the Earth, by which designation his kingly office is given to him, namely that he is the King of kings. These three offices of Christ, my beloved, work out our salvation.
By these three, the prophetic, the high priestly, and the kingly, we have our salvation. By the first, the prophetic, the true God is revealed. By the second, humanity is brought to God; it is brought, it is offered up.
When he gave the example that we carry the Holy Chalice and the Holy Paten, during the Holy Anaphora we offer up the gifts to God. 'To offer up' means I lift them and carry them toward God. I offer them in the sign of the cross, saying, 'Thine own of Thine own we offer unto Thee.'
But here we have the offering up of all humanity. This offering Christ made upon the Cross. He made the offering in a high priestly manner, that is, in a priestly manner, upon the Cross. Christ exercised his priesthood by offering the human nature to the Father, more precisely, to the Father, to the Word, and to the Holy Spirit.
And by the third, creation itself becomes the true Kingdom of God, the true dominion of God.
But through Baptism and Chrismation, which every believer receives, he is grafted into the body of Christ, the Church. And in this way, each believer takes to himself, in some measure, all three of the offices of Christ.
Christ is prophet, and the believer becomes a prophet. Christ is high priest, and the believer becomes, in his own measure, a priest. Christ is king, and the believer, in his own measure, becomes a king. So this means that man receives these offices from Christ, and Christ in turn received them from the Father. Christ was anointed with this threefold office.
And precisely because we receive from Christ these three offices of Christ, we can understand what the Evangelist John says in the Apocalypse, right after naming the threefold office of Christ: that He made us a kingdom, priests to His God and Father.
When did He make us this? When did He make us a kingdom and priests to God? After Christ stood as the Faithful Witness, after He stood as the Firstborn of the Dead, after He stood as the Ruler of the Kings. This same idea is already present in the Old Testament. God Himself says, through Moses, in Exodus 19:6: You shall be to Me a royal priesthood and a holy nation.
"These are the words you shall speak to the sons of Israel." How beautiful! Speak these words, he says, to Moses, to the Israelites. That you shall become for me a royal priesthood, a holy nation. Can you grasp, my beloved, what it means to be a royal priesthood, a holy nation?
And through the prophet Isaiah, in 61:6, He says: You shall be called priests of the Lord, ministers of God; you shall eat the strength of the nations, and in their wealth you shall be admired. The first thing He says is, you shall become priests of God; the second, that you shall acquire, literally eat, the wealth of the nations, and through their wealth you shall be admired. ‥
Rather it means that you shall become kings. But the right meaning of priest and king will be given to us only in Christ Jesus. If I do not have the presence of Christ, then truly, studying the Old Testament without the light of the New, I can quite easily twist Holy Scripture into something chauvinistic, nationalistic, racial.
And I can say that the Scripture is talking about me, about me the Jew, that I am to become a world-ruler and a man of wealth. A terrible thing, a terrible misreading of the word of God. ‥
‥
‥ So not in this sense; but let us move on.
In the New Testament, my beloved, the Apostle Peter takes the words of the Old and renews them now in the manner of the New Covenant. As follows, 1 Peter 2:5 and 9: 'But you are a chosen race' - who? you the Christians, no longer those of the synagogue, you the Christians - 'a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession.' So then, the holy nation and the royal priesthood are no longer for the Jews; they are for the Christians. This, this is the light of the New Testament.
The whole thing now takes on a new dimension: that you may proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Do you see any materialistic element here anywhere? Nowhere at all. And that is exactly why we would say that those who would like to form Christian political parties are turning back to the Old Testament.
They fall, whether they understand it or not, whether consciously or unconsciously, into the very same error that the Jews fell into. Into exactly the same error. Therefore every believer who is baptised and chrismated with the Holy Chrism is a prophet, a priest, and a king.
But what does it mean for me, the Christian who has been baptised and chrismated, that I am a prophet, a king, and a priest? What does this mean? First, regarding the office of the prophet, it is the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and his manifold gifts of grace.
That is why the Evangelist John, in his first epistle 2:20, assures the newly illumined and says: 'You have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.' You have a chrism from the Holy God and you know all things. What exactly does one know? Those things which lead to salvation. These he knows. He knows the deception of the world, he knows the methods of the devil, every person knows the snares of his own self, and the way is opened for him to see the spiritual benefit.
The Holy Spirit, then, whom we receive through Chrismation and through which we have this chrism of the prophet, the Holy Spirit is our interior teacher who opens our intellect to understand the saving truths and helps us to be freed from the deceptions of the world and to perceive its cunning devices and its snares.
How great this is, my beloved, how great, I do not know how to shout it more loudly so that you may hear it. It is when one sees those people who are outside Christianity, or who are Christians but have extinguished the Holy Spirit, who have rendered useless the chrism they received; they have rendered it useless.
Because they live according to the world and move and think according to the world, in how they act in their lives. And one sees the absurd, the foolish, the dangerous things they pursue, the headlong precipices, and one says: these people have no mind, they do not see, they do not understand.
Today I noticed a verse, and this is the third time I have mentioned it today, from Psalm 118; it says there: 'I beheld the foolish and I pined away.' I saw, the Psalmist says, people remaining without understanding, and I began to melt away within. One truly melts away when one sees folly prevailing all around.
If you saw someone, for example, who had climbed up a tree, sitting on a branch holding a saw, and there he sits on the branch grandly, perfectly at ease and feeling completely safe, sawing off the very branch he is sitting on, what would you say? What would you say? Well, let me magnify the picture. As a nation, tell me, as a nation, as the Greek nation, we are sawing off the branch we are sitting on.
We are cutting it off, my beloved. Take a look at education. See what a deep crisis our education is going through. It is in a deep crisis. Take a look at the customs, the manners and habits that are being introduced daily into our social and private life. Look at how the modern Greek is starting to think. Look at how he is starting to live.
These are the very marks that peoples have shown when they entered the realm of decline. These are signs of decline. These are symptoms of decay. Philosophers, that is to say, men who had eyes to see a little, were already pointing this out in Europe during the last century, that Europe is slowly dying.
And we receive all of this as if it were the last word in advancement and progress. This is precisely where you see that we too are going to perish, we are heading straight for the precipice, and the people do not see these things. They do not see. And a strange and peculiar feeling seizes you within. You truly melt away inside when you watch people acting the way they are acting and we are heading for the precipice. I will not even speak of the private cases and stories we see around us.
From this, then, understand what it means to say, I have the chrism of the Holy Spirit, I am a prophet. In other words, that the Spirit of God is my teacher, so that I can see, so that I can discern, the things that someone might call common sense, the things that the Spirit of God would grant us as common sense. We do not even have common sense.
And many times we speak in the name of a great and profound wisdom, when in fact it is folly, folly, folly. As the saying goes, 'Whom God wills to destroy, He first makes foolish.' It seems that God has decided to destroy us, and that is why we have been struck with folly.
And this is because we have abandoned God. I said all this simply as an example, so that you may understand what it means to say, I have the prophetic Spirit. That is, I have as my teacher the Spirit of God, who enlightens me as to how I am to walk forward. Secondly, regarding the office of the priest, here a clarification must be made.
This general priesthood that exists among the faithful, for he said, priests, a royal priesthood. Every baptized person is also a priest. This general priesthood does not replace the liturgical priesthood, and therefore it does not push aside the Mystery of Holy Orders, as unfortunately the Protestants do.
They speak about a general priesthood, but they do not have the special, ordained priesthood, and for this reason they have abolished the Mystery of Holy Orders. I must tell you that the Mystery of Holy Orders is the Mystery of the Church.
And the Mystery of the Church is the Mystery of salvation. This is why Holy Orders, the Mystery of Holy Orders, is celebrated during the Divine Liturgy. The Divine Liturgy springs from Holy Orders, is constituted by Holy Orders, and at the same time it constitutes Holy Orders.
That is, the priest celebrates the Liturgy, the high priest, the bishop, celebrates the Liturgy by virtue of his priesthood; please pay attention to this point, by virtue of his priesthood, and at the same time, within the Liturgy itself, the priesthood is received.
For this reason the Mystery of Holy Orders is both distinguished from and identified with the Mystery of the Church. It is distinguished and yet identified; this is very important, very important, and this is precisely what the Protestants abolished.
And so in reality, because they abolished the priesthood, they have no Church. The Protestants are not a Church. They are Christian communities. They are not a Church. Let me say it once more, one more time. And if they speak of a Protestant Church, either they are lying, or they are speaking loosely, improperly. And I say it again, one more time: they are not a Church, because they do not have the charism of the priesthood in the special sense of the word. You see? I have stressed it enough; I hope I have made clear the special priesthood and the general priesthood. But both the general and the special priesthood begin from Christ and end again in Christ, though each one has its own path.
This, my beloved, the faithful brought. We have, that is, a chain of offering. The faithful person takes the prosphoron, kneads it, prepares it, and brings it to the Church.
That is, he offers through the priest, and together with the priest, whatever he is going to offer. Notice, through the priest, through the hands of the priest, and together with the priest, whatever he is going to offer. So we see what this means in practice. And now you will understand me. Can the priest celebrate the Liturgy entirely on his own?
He takes a prosphoron, opens the church, goes inside, says 'Blessed is God,' 'Blessed is the Kingdom,' and begins the Divine Liturgy. Can he? No. Not for technical reasons, not because the priest needs a chanter, and someone to say the 'Amen' and to say 'Lord, have mercy.' No, not for technical reasons, but for ecclesiological reasons. The priest is forbidden to celebrate the Divine Liturgy by himself, without at least one member of the faithful being present. It is forbidden. Let me say this once more. Not for technical reasons, but for ecclesiological reasons.
So what is the ecclesiological reasoning? Everything I have been telling you all this while, all this time, this is what I have been telling you. So do I, a priest, at this very moment that I am a priest, do I have no need of anyone to celebrate the Divine Liturgy? No, you too must be present, you the layman. Because my own priesthood and yours must together make up the offering to God. In other words, the lay element, which holds the general priesthood, must be present, present! That is why the people receive Communion of the Body and the Blood, just as the priest does, of the Body and the Blood. And why is this? Because in view of all these conferences and so on, please be seated, so that you may know where we stand: the Roman Catholic Church. Earlier I spoke to you about the Protestants; now I am speaking to you about the Roman Catholic Church.
He does not commune the faithful with the Blood of Christ, but only with the Body. What does this mean? It means he grants privileges to the clergy which the laity do not receive. That is why the Roman Catholic priest can celebrate alone, every day, in his room. Ten minutes; from ten minutes up to one hour is the length of the Roman Catholic, the papal Liturgy, and in ten minutes he finishes the Liturgy, communes by himself, and goes off to his work.
Our Orthodoxy knows nothing of these things. Why? Because they took a wrong turn or misunderstood the role of the people. The people, the presence of the people, of the lay element, is of foundational importance. And our Church expresses this in the following way.
You, the priest, cannot celebrate the Liturgy without the lay element. Without another being present inside, without at least one other person there. You see how important these things are. But let me move on. The Apostle Peter, ah, forgive me, I must also tell you that the language of the Divine Liturgy is composed in the first person plural.
What does that mean, in the first person plural? Does it mean that the form, the structure of the Liturgy, calls for more than one celebrant, so that they can be expressed together in the first person plural? No. It means that the people are present, and it means that the whole world, the whole people, the entire Church, offers up its anaphora to God.
The Apostle Peter calls the faithful stones, living stones, who are being built up, as he says in his First Epistle, chapter 2 verse 5, into a spiritual house. The Apostle Paul calls the faithful temples of the Holy Spirit.
Hold on to this: I am a temple of the Holy Spirit. Keep it in mind. What does it mean that I am a temple of the Holy Spirit? It means that in this living temple of God, each one of the faithful is, for himself, his own temple, its guardian, and its priest. Each one of the faithful is a temple. A temple of the living God.
Paul says this many times; he has told us this many times. But when he speaks about a temple, he also means the priest. Who is the priest? I am the temple, I am the priest, and I am also the guardian of the temple of God, which is my own self, he says. Do you understand what this means? But, my beloved, in the Old Testament, the victim that was offered, the sacrificial victim, had this meaning in the sacrifices: it stood in the place of the guilty one. A man would take a sheep and go to sacrifice it instead of being sacrificed himself. The blood of the animal was shed, and in this way the offering was made, the sacrifice, in place of the guilty one. The sheep, which had done no wrong at all, in place of the guilty one, the animal's blood was shed. For otherwise, would we ourselves have to kill ourselves? God does not want that. But here now, we have a sacrifice far beyond the one that existed in the Old Testament.
When I would take a lamb and sacrifice it, I was in order before God. Now, no. The victim of worship that I will now sacrifice to God is myself, my own ego. Listen to how the Apostle Paul puts this, in the Epistle to the Romans: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, listen carefully, parastesai ta somata hymon, that you present your bodies.
Indeed, the verb parastesai, paristemi or paristamai, has a liturgical dimension. It is exactly like when people bring the prosphora and present them here to God, taking them up there to the Royal Doors.
In earlier times they were offered at the Royal Doors, and indeed at the time of the Apostle reading. A remnant of this offering by the people is when the priest comes out at the time of the Apostle reading and censes. Because the things which the faithful had offered, the priest would cense them and take them inside.
Now, this is called parastano, that is, I make a presentation of my gift. That is why the Apostle Paul uses the word parastesai. It is of liturgical dimension, and it comes from the Old Testament. Present what now? Your prosphora, your wine, what, what, what? Pay attention: your bodies, your bodies as a living sacrifice, a living sacrifice, holy, well-pleasing to God, your reasonable worship. Reasonable here means spiritual, your spiritual worship. So then, I will offer myself, even though, not being an ordained priest, I offer myself. And the Apostle Peter says, First Peter chapter 2 verse 5: "and you yourselves, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." So that you may bring spiritual sacrifices which are acceptable to God, through Jesus Christ, the Mediator.
So then, the sacrifice of the priestly faithful, of the faithful who exercises priesthood, in the general sense of priest, that is, all of you: first, it is the sacrifice of praise, the fruit of the lips, as the Apostle Paul says in Hebrews chapter 13 verse 15, "Through Him let us offer up," let us offer up; you see the verb anaphero, just as in the prayer of the Holy Anaphora; you see, these too are liturgical words; let us offer up a sacrifice. A sacrifice of what? Of praise, that is, a hymn, a hymn, doxology, a hymn from my mouth, continually to God, that is to say, the fruit of the lips. He does not say the fruit of the heart, he says the fruit of the lips, that is, that I chant to God, of those confessing His name, by chanting, by praising God and by confessing, by confessing the name of God. Second, the sacrifice of righteousness, as Psalm 50 says, that if You had desired sacrifice, here he says, You truly asked for a sacrifice, I gave it to You, the faithful says to God. Which one?
Whole burnt offerings You do not desire either. You do not want the holocausts, that is, that we should cast the animals into the fire to be burned. A sacrifice to God, for the sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit, a contrite heart, and a humbled one, humbled. God will not despise it, He will not thrust it away, He will not drive it off. Then You will be well pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with oblation and whole burnt offerings, holocausts; then You will be well pleased, then You will desire it, and then You will accept a sacrifice of righteousness, oblation and whole burnt offerings.
What is this sacrifice of righteousness? The whole verse and the whole passage tell us this: it is the sacrifice of repentance, a great sacrifice to God. It is the sacrifice of repentance, because by our sin we offended God and grieved the Holy Spirit.
Furthermore, righteousness also means virtue, so it is the sacrifice of virtue. On the altar, with the coals burning inside the offering, I will place my virtues so they may become incense and rise up to heaven.
Does it not say somewhere, in the psalm "Lord, I have cried unto Thee," "Let my prayer be set forth as incense before You"? I am not offering You incense; I am offering You my prayer. And if You wish, Lord, I offer You the incense as well, together with my prayer.
But just as the incense rises at this very moment, so too will my prayer rise. And in the same way my virtues rise, my virtues, that is, my holiness. So then, what is the sacrifice of righteousness? The sacrifice of righteousness is the sacrifice of the virtues, to offer up my virtues, to be a holy person.
Third, there is the sacrifice of mercy. In the Letter to the Hebrews, the Apostle Paul says, 'But do not forget to do good and to share.' Do not forget to be aware of the other person's presence, and always to do him good.
"With such sacrifices" — for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. So then, this too is a sacrifice, and indeed a well-pleasing sacrifice, truly so. And so, my beloved, we have the sacrifice of praise, the fruit of the lips; the sacrifice of righteousness, of repentance (metanoia) and of the virtues; and the sacrifice of almsgiving.
So much for the priestly office. We have, then, this general priesthood; and now, as for the royal office: in Baptism we receive, as a pledge of our inheritance, the seal of the Holy Spirit. We hear it distinctly there, when the priest says, "the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit." But a seal means that something is inscribed upon us. What is this mark? We will see here in the Apocalypse further on, much later, perhaps next year, I do not know, that there, much, much later, when the Antichrist imposes the Beast, his own mark, the faithful too have their own mark.
What is this mark? I will not speak now about the Antichrist, what the mark of the Beast, of the Antichrist, is. I will tell you only the mark of the faithful. It is the Cross, with which a person is noetically marked, and so he receives the seal of the Holy Spirit, this together with his free acceptance, to be baptized and become a Christian.
So then, when I receive this seal of the Holy Spirit, I become the human being who receives a promise, a pledge, an assurance, that I will become a king, not a slave, a king. Would you like to see this?
The Book of the Apocalypse, 4:4: 'Around the throne,' twenty-four thrones, around the throne of Him who is seated on the throne of God, I saw twenty-four thrones, twice twelve, twice twelve, which signifies a multitude, and these are the faithful. And on the thrones I saw the twenty-four elders seated. Why elders?
It is because of the ripeness of their holiness. When the time comes for us to move on to the visions of Saint John the Evangelist, what majesty we will find there! They are clothed in white garments, dressed in white robes, and on their heads they wear golden crowns.
Therefore, the faithful one is not a slave. If he is crowned, he is crowned; he is a king, a lord. The righteous shall shine forth as the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. They will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. But what does it mean here, on earth, that we hold the royal office? Here on earth. You may say to me, yes, in heaven we are crowned, indeed. But here on earth, what significance does this have?
What does it mean? It means to reign over my passions, to be lord of all creation, of the whole of God's handiwork. When God told the first-formed ones to be lords, to have dominion over creation, He did not mean, when He said this to Adam, that he was to become lord of creation in the sense of conquering creation the way we conquer it today.
Pay attention to this point, because today our conquest of creation is the opening of our own grave. When I conquer atomic energy, I open the grave, so that I may suffer cancer. Because radiation kills me; when I conquer the secrets of creation and unleash them to use them, these very things kill me.
Or do you disagree? What we eat kills us. What we drink kills us. What we breathe kills us. Before, these things did not kill us. Now that we are conquering the secrets of creation, these very things kill us. So this cannot be it. It would be strange for God to say, become lords of creation, and then for this lordship of ours to kill us in the end. That is not it. He means: I stand at the summit of creation, in health. There is no created thing higher than me. Everything is beneath me. I am lord of creation. You can see this, whether in a more recent ascetic or in an older one. He has nothing. Yet he is lord of creation. Because he is lord of creation, even the wild beasts submit to him. The whole of creation does.
Abba Moses the Ethiopian, for example, says this: once people went to him, if you can believe it, to be cared for, and he had no water in his cell to boil a few lentils. He goes outside, sets out a little pot, and says, Lord, send me a little water. At once a cloud came and filled only the little pot with water. He took it, boiled the lentils, and gave them to his visitor.
This is what it means to be king over creation. This is what it means, and not in an autonomous way, where I unleash the secrets of creation only to destroy ourselves. The autonomous way is to say that God does not exist, that I am lord of creation. No, it means to know that above me stands the absolute Lord, God.
But still further, I am lord even over my passions. What governs my passions? The ruling nous, the spiritual intellect that rules. And with a princely spirit establish me. Princely, hegemonic, means kingly; with a kingly intellect establish me, that I may be a king, and this intellect governs my whole existence.
Not to become a slave of men, not to become a slave of ideas, not to become a slave of matter. This is what it means, from this present life, to bear the office of king. Well, my beloved, Christ, who makes us kings and priests, is coming. Behold, He comes. How this word, He comes, still strikes the faithful, that it is an opening; He comes, behold He comes with the clouds, and every eye shall see Him, even those who pierced Him, and all the tribes of the earth shall mourn over Him. Yes, Amen. He comes with the clouds of heaven, with the heavenly clouds, and every eye shall see Him, even those who thrust the lance into Him, and then all the tribes of the earth shall weep and beat their breasts. Yes, Amen.
Verses 7 and 8, which I have just read to you, my beloved, close the prologue and also constitute the central idea of the whole book. As often happens in the epistles of the Apostle Paul, in the prologue he sets forth the central idea of the letter.
What is this central idea of the book of the Apocalypse? It is the Second Coming of Christ. This will be the central point around which everything the book of Revelation tells us and speaks to us will turn.
Christ is coming, Christ is coming. With the introduction of the word 'Behold,' he wants to draw our attention to this central idea, something Holy Scripture does very often. The Evangelists narrate the Gospels and tell us that this happened and that happened, and then suddenly they say 'Behold, he is coming,' which, as I told you, is the main theme of the book of Revelation.
But consider this very image: behold, He comes with the clouds of heaven, and every eye shall see Him, even those who pierced Him, those who ran the spear into Christ. And they too will beat their heads and their breasts when they see the One they pierced. We have here a wondrous image, the image of Christ coming again, and at the same time a fearful image.
Here two Christological prophecies meet. Both belong to the Old Testament, and they are joined together here. One belongs to the prophet Daniel, and the other to the prophet Zachariah. These two prophecies are the ones that opened the way for the composition of this vision and prophecy, which the Evangelist John sets before us and with which he closes his prologue.
But because this is a very large subject, and our time is finished, we will close. I would only like to tell you this: when at some point a moment arrives, and it truly does arrive, when it becomes something felt, something deeply rooted within our heart, that Christ is coming, then it becomes a longing, a hope mingled with nostalgia, and then nothing holds us to this present life.
We do not desire to die or to depart, no; it is simply that Christ is coming. It is a deep, deep hope, this. There is a little song, a beautiful little song from the catechetical schools, which says, 'Christ is coming again to the earth.'
Every time I hear it, sincerely, it moves me. This is how we must begin, my beloved, to feel within ourselves this experience: Christ is coming. This was the experience of the first Christian Church.
With this experience the Church lived; with this experience she gave forth her martyrs; with this experience she gave forth her saints. With this experience, my beloved, with this experience she will once again give forth martyrs, and she will once again give forth saints.
I wish this with all my heart.

Θα μου πείτε, αυτά είναι πολύ μεγάλα πράγματα. Μάλιστα αγαπητοί μου, είναι πολύ μεγάλα, τόσο μεγάλα, όσο ο ουρανός, τόσο μεγάλα είναι όλα αυτά. Πέστε μου λοιπόν, αν κάποτε μάθω ότι είμαι χριστιανός, σημαίνει είμαι πολίτης μιας βασιλείας, είμαι ιερεύς και βασιλεύς, όπως θα δείτε στην ανάλυση της συνεχείας, τότε, πώς θα μπορούσα να πω πια ότι ο Χριστιανισμός είναι μια θρησκεία, όπως είναι όλες οι φυσικές θρησκείες;
Ότι αυτό αποτελεί μία απλή επίπτωση, του να είναι ο χριστιανός ένας καλός και αγαθός πολίτης, έτερος εκάτερος. Αλλά γι' αυτό ήρθε ο Χριστός εις τον κόσμο, για να μας κάνει ανθρώπους καλούς κἀγαθούς, που έλεγε ο Πλάτων;
Τάδε τὰ ῥήματα ἐρεῖς τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραήλ. Τι ωραίο! Αυτά τα λόγια να πεις, λέγει, στον Μωϋσέα, στους Ισραηλίτας. Ότι εσείς θα μου γίνετε βασίλειον ιεράτευμα, έθνος Άγιον. Μπορείτε να συλλάβετε, αγαπητοί μου, τι θα πει βασίλειον ιεράτευμα, έθνος Άγιον;
Δηλαδή, προσφέρει διά του ιερέως και μετά του ιερέως ό,τι θα προσφέρει. Προσέξτε, διά του ιερέως, διά των χειρών του ιερέως και μαζί με τον ιερέα ό,τι θα προσφέρει. Οπότε βλέπουμε αυτό που στην πράξη είναι ως εξής. Και τώρα θα με καταλάβετε. Μπορεί ο ιερεύς να λειτουργήσει υπό μόνος του;
Ώστε λοιπόν, η θυσία του ιερατεύοντος πιστού είναι, του ιερατεύοντος πιστού, με τη γενική έννοια του ιερέως, όλοι εσείς δηλαδή, πρώτον, είναι θυσία αινέσεως, ο καρπός των χειλέων, όπως λέει ο Απόστολος Παύλος, λέει Εβραίους 13,15, «Δι' αυτού αναφέρωμεν», το ρω με ωμέγα, δηλαδή ας αναφέρωμεν, βλέπετε το ρήμα αναφέρω, έτσι και η ευχή της Αγίας Αναφοράς, το βλέπετε, λειτουργικαί λέξεις και αυταί, ας αναφέρωμεν θυσίαν, τι θυσίαν; Αινέσεως, δηλαδή ύμνος, ύμνος, δοξολογία, ύμνος από το στόμα μου, διαπαντός τω Θεώ, τουτέστι δηλαδή καρπόν χειλέων, Δεν λέει καρπόν καρδίας, λέει καρπόν χειλέων, δηλαδή να ψάλλω στον Θεό, ομολογούντων τω ονόματι αυτού, με το να ψάλλω, να αινέσω το Θεό και να ομολογώ, να ομολογώ το όνομα του Θεού. Δεύτερο, θυσία δικαιοσύνης, λέει ο Πεντηκοστός Ψαλμός, ότι ει ηθέλησας θυσίαν, εδώ κάνουν, λέει, πραγματικά ζήτησες θυσία, σου την έδωσα, λέει ο πιστός στο Θεό, ποια;
Ώστε λοιπόν, όταν παίρνω αυτήν τη σφραγίδα του Αγίου Πνεύματος, τότε γίνομαι ο άνθρωπος που δέχομαι μία επαγγελία, έναν αρραβώνα, μία υπόσχεση, ότι θα γίνω βασιλιάς, όχι δούλος, βασιλιάς. Θέλετε να το δείτε;
Το βιβλίο της Αποκαλύψεως, 4,4: «κυκλόθεν τοῦ θρόνου», θρόνοι 24, γύρω από τον θρόνο, του καθημένου επί του θρόνου του Θεού, είδα θρόνους 24, δις 12, δις 12, που σημαίνει πλήθος και είναι πιστοί, και επί τους θρόνους είδα τους 24 πρεσβυτέρους καθημένους. Γιατί πρεσβύτεροι;
Συνεπώς, ο πιστός δεν είναι δούλος. Αν είναι εστεμμένος, είναι εστεμμένος, είναι ο βασιλιάς, κύριος. Οἱ δίκαιοι ἐκλάμψουσιν ὡς ὁ ἥλιος ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Πατρὸς αὐτῶν. Θα λάμψουν σαν τον ήλιο στη βασιλεία του Πατέρα των. Τι σημαίνει όμως εδώ, εις τη γη, ότι έχουμε το βασιλικό αξίωμα; Εδώ στη γη. Θα μου πείτε, ναι, στον ουρανό εστεμμένοι, μάλιστα. Εδώ στη γη τι σημασία έχει αυτό;
