...where we left off the day before yesterday. This is the twenty-first question, and it reads as follows:

When we find ourselves in a difficult social setting during a fasting period, what should we do? Is it a sin if we attend a joyful occasion—for example, a meal, a Baptism, an engagement, Holy Matrimony, a funeral, or a memorial service? What should we do? Should we break the fast or not? Should we cause confusion? Instead of pleasing people, should we upset them?

Is that Christian? I have encountered what this soul describes many times over the years that I have been speaking. Many people wonder how they ought to conduct themselves. They find themselves in a difficult position.

The matter has many sides, as we might say.

Human reasoning has no place here. Here Christ speaks, and there the world speaks. The believer is called to take a stand. If he truly calls himself a believer, he will take his stand with Christ. If he does not call himself a believer—or if he does, but is not truly faithful—he will take his stand with the world.

Of course, this does not mean drawing a pistol. But, as I say, the matter has many sides. The first question is: how did you come to be there? You did not fall from the moon, did you? The wind did not carry you there. You know where you are going, whom you will meet, and what is going to happen. Do you not think you can take a stand? You did not happen to be there by chance. That is one side of the matter.

So, you knew that Holy Matrimony was to be celebrated and that these people would do such things at the wedding. They call it a joyful celebration. Of course, normally there would be no wedding during this period, because weddings are not celebrated now; but under certain circumstances, a wedding may take place even now.

If the married couple promises to abstain from marital relations, the Church may exercise ecclesiastical economy and crown them in Holy Matrimony. Perhaps one of them is about to travel, go into military service, or face some other circumstance. The Church exercises economy and celebrates the wedding.

If they give that promise—even if afterward they do not intend to keep it—the Church may, on one occasion, exercise economy, celebrate Holy Matrimony, and permit a meal as well. What are we to do then? Are we to sit at their table simply to please them? They themselves may not even believe.

But what shall we do, we who say that we believe? We ought, in some way, to know what is going to happen—and most of us do know. Consequently, since we know what will take place, we should not attend, only to be led astray ourselves or supposedly put them in a difficult position.

Christ does not accept such a thing. You cannot abolish the Church’s ordinances and change the character of the fasting seasons. You cannot. This is a penitential season, a season of mourning. Therefore, festive celebrations are forbidden. Revelry is forbidden. It is forbidden.

This is a time not to go wherever there is rejoicing, but, if possible, wherever there is sorrow. Ecclesiastes says in one place, specifically in chapter seven, verse two: “It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of laughter.” It is preferable to enter a house in mourning rather than a house of rejoicing.

In cases like these, saying "I just happened to be there" is no excuse. Still, I for my part may take into account that you did find yourself there. You weren't expecting it. You thought this was a devout household, and that they would cook you a fasting dish with oil, or even fish, if fish happened to be permitted that day — on the Annunciation, say — and instead what they set in front of you was meat.

What should we do then? You must take a stand—again, not with a pistol in your hand, as we said! You must take a stand: “Please forgive me. Thank you very much, but I do not think I should partake of this meal. Just something simple—a little salad, a couple of potatoes, perhaps a little calamari—and we shall be quite content.”

“We do not want to spoil your celebration; you may celebrate Pascha yourselves. But we must not allow ourselves to be led astray.” Do you not think that, in some way, you will also help them? And do you not think that tomorrow, when that person comes to judgment, you know what he will say to Christ?

If you and I do the opposite, he will say, “You cannot judge me, Lord. People who belonged to You—religious people who were held in high regard—never told us that this was contrary to the faith.” Then you will find another unwanted medal hanging around your neck, along with all the others, and God will call you to account for having led that person astray.

I repeat: you will not draw a pistol. But with gentle and gracious words, we can remind these people that things are not as they suppose, but rather somewhat different: “I thought I was coming to an Orthodox household. I did not know I was coming to a Jewish one.”

“We thought we had entered the home of faithful people. We did not imagine that their faith was so weak. But we cannot do this. If you wish us to remain, well and good. Otherwise, farewell.” That is how it is done, but it requires a little courage. I do not mean worldly bravado or bullying, but Christian courage—a gracious confession of the faith.

But what actually happens? What is the thought behind it all, in the final analysis? Our little stomach likes the food.

A fox once said that there would be plenty of arbutus berries that year. They asked her, “How do you know, Mistress Maria, that there will be berries this year?” “Because my little stomach wants them,” she replied. Her stomach wanted them, and therefore she concluded that there would be berries. So we too hide behind our weakness and say that the others are to blame and that we must not upset them.

But which is better: to make him happy and lead him to Hell, or to upset him and help him to be saved, if he is willing? Which is better? And what is the purpose of a person’s struggle in this world? Is he here merely to create false pleasures in the world, or to enlighten the world by word and deed?

If a person has no other purpose—if, through my flabby, watered-down, lukewarm way of life, I cause people to remain stuck down there, unable to climb out of the mire—then my life has no purpose at all.

In that case, let my days be cut short, so that I may be condemned less severely. But that is not our purpose. Nor can a person say, “I will upset them; I will put them in a difficult position.” Are you putting him in a difficult position when, instead of preparing lamb and steaks for you, he prepares a salad? Is that really placing him in difficulty?

In fact, you will be making things easier for him.

This person. Or often an accommodation can be arranged in advance by discussing the matter. You know, when people invite us and expect us to come, we can ask, “But how are we going to handle this? What kind of meal are you planning? What do you have in mind? Will you be serving non-fasting foods? Perhaps we should not come, so that we do not put you in a difficult position. But if you consider our presence necessary, then let us honor you with our presence, not with what we eat. Let us honor you simply by being there. Only please have something that we too can eat.” That is how the matter should be approached from a Christian perspective. And when someone invites you by telephone, you can answer by telephone: “Yes, but this presents a difficulty for us. We can come if you are able to accommodate us.” This happened to us with some dear relatives. Our son-in-law, whose name was Theodore, was celebrating his name day, and as customary, we were expected to sit down at the table with everyone.

There were many other guests there as well. Yet a discussion took place, brief perhaps, but the matter came to the surface, and the occasion remained memorable because we said that we would leave. “Make us a salad, cook a few potatoes, open a tin of calamari, and we will gladly stay.”

“But there will be meat and other things on the table while you are eating.” “Do not worry about us.” And this happened so that we would leave., they prepared fasting food for my wife and me. They kept their lamb and ate it, but they did so with an uneasy conscience, and they will remember it. I also remember a refined young lady, a respectable and accomplished woman of the world, as they say. Before we had even sat down, she rose from her seat in the sitting room, because she had heard the discussion, and said, “I never expected a respectable gentleman like you to hold such views.”

That gave me the opportunity to show her that my views were the right ones. Are they not right? Such situations do arise, of course, and they become occasions for discussion—but for good and worthwhile discussion.

Not silly arguments — good ones, well made. Without hurting anyone's feelings. And in a way that makes it easier for them. Because they didn't know either. If they had known, they would have been fasting.

He would have kept the fast, and if he had known, he would never have laid on this dinner in the first place. "I would love to set a table for you — I would slaughter my own child for you. But as it happens, these days fall right in the middle of the feasts, in the middle of the fast, at midday. Never mind, leave it; I will invite you afterwards." "Go on, do it," you say, just like that. "But you don't believe any of it." "That is exactly why I am doing it." So then — you are going to pull me along your way; why shouldn't I pull you along mine? So evil is stronger than good. What is right is the weak thing.

Weakness is no better than what is wrong. How long will we Christians remain spineless, when we possess the truth? And with what right can we look upon that truth and refuse to speak it, whoever may stand before us?

Because many times we back down out of deference to a person. Who is this person? Who is it? Your son-in-law, your daughter-in-law, your mother-in-law, your brother, your boss. Who is this person? Is this person greater than Christ? What is this person, after all?

But we don't pay attention to these things as much as we could, so as to help this situation in cases like these. Because that's how it works: slowly, slowly, little by little, with love, with patient explanation, knowledge will grow, so that a person will finally understand — at least the one who is called a Christian, the one who professes Christianity, the one who writes on their identity card that they are an Orthodox Christian — that they have the right to prove what they believe in practice, by their deeds, and to live it.

As things stand, everyone approaches the matter according to his appetite, because he himself has never fasted, or has never paid attention to fasting or valued it properly. Yet many people will fast out of respect, even though in their own homes they may already fast strictly, eating dry food and the like.

...and so on. Yet when they are expecting a guest—a friend, a relative, someone arriving from abroad, or someone about to leave—they think they can water down this Christian way of life and prepare a meal that, as they see it, will please him. But once again, their thinking is mistaken. This is not right. You cannot truly honor someone by leading him astray, because he too may be just a little...

He may be only a modest Christian, and yet you, the supposedly great Christian, lead him astray. Perhaps he himself wanted not to eat, but you are the one urging him to eat; you do not know. So do what is right, as the circumstances allow. Besides, if we wish to look at the matter positively, Christ has given us so many good foods for every season. Even during the strictest fasts, there are so many good things that can be served at a table that you need only take a forkful of each and then say, “Thank you; I do not want anything more.”

But Satan, who knows how readily we betray our faith and are led astray from what we believe, prompts us to do this; and many of us are caught off guard, as we were saying—caught off guard. I was coming this way through the narrow street when three people stopped me.

One of them said to me, “I became seriously ill, Mr Panagopoulos. I received Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the Fast. Will I be able to receive Holy Communion again next Sunday?” Because he had fallen ill, he had relaxed his fast. “Yes,” he said, “I broke the fast. I drink milk and take other such things.” I told him, “You cannot receive Holy Communion without first going to Confession.” “But I was ill.” “Yes, but there is a Canon that forbids it, even when you are ill, unless you have the blessing of your spiritual father.”

So, for the sake of your baby, you must go and receive a blessing, with the understanding that you will confess, and the priest will certainly give you his blessing; that is within your reach. Since you became ill, we are not going to send you either to a sanatorium or to a mental hospital. You will eat what you need, but the prayer of absolution must be read over you.

For the fact that you became ill is not a chance event. It is not accidental; it is a chastisement. Many people regard it as a chance event, but it is not. It is a chastisement. “What should I do, then? I did not know,” he told me. “Now that you have learned it today, go and confess so that you may receive Holy Communion.” A person cannot simply make up his own rules.

Since he says that he is a Christian.. Say, “I am nothing,” throw all these things aside, and go your own way. But when you attend Church, when the day after tomorrow you will hold a candle at the Resurrection, when your papers say “Orthodox Christian,” when you believe in the Most Holy Theotokos and the Saints, when you keep an oil lamp at home and make the sign of the Cross, then you are obliged to give all this substance through the way you live—through your life.

Those who see you, those who hear you, and those who share their lives with you are all affected. You must always set the will of Christ before them.

There are many people here who once held the opposite view about fasting. This morning a lady visited me and said, “Even on Great Friday, Mr Panagopoulos, I used to collapse and could not remain standing on my feet.”

The lady was obviously unwell. “Now I fast even without oil, and I do not remember how many square metres she told me—120 square metres, she said, on two floors—and I look after them as lightly as a bird.” And she does not even eat oil. Quite rightly, because the toxins that cause your fatigue begin to subside.

Exactly—if only a person wanted to do it, if only he truly believed. Then he could understand that the sick person has an even greater need for fasting.

The Ascension of the Theotokos, the Annunciation, the Annunciation, the Annunciation, the Annunciation. Let us be attentive: there is no excuse. There is no excuse. The great evil here, as I heard in another discussion, is that when people hold a memorial service during a fasting period, they think they absolutely must break the fast by eating meat.

Just think: they break the fast and say to Christ, “We are setting You aside,” while at the same time holding a memorial service. What do they do at a memorial service? They go to pray to Christ for the departed soul. But will Christ hear you when you transgress His commandments?

How will Christ hear you? Alas for those who remain there, and alas for their relatives as well. Instead of bringing the departed person farther out, they will drive him farther in.

No one can dispute what I am saying. “God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshipper of God and does His will, He hears him.” So when the announcement says, “We will hold the forty-day memorial service for our brother, our father, our child, or our wife, and we ask those who honour their memory to come and unite their prayers with ours,” it does not say, “Come so that we can strip the lamb to the bone.”

It is enough, then, for us to understand the conditions required for these supplications. There must be an intention to pray, and an intention to repent and make confession, before you go to Church to pray, attend a memorial service, and intercede for someone who has died. The dead cannot pray for the dead. Those who are themselves like walking cemeteries—the unbelieving, the unrepentant, those who have not confessed, and those who do not receive Holy Communion—cannot go to a cemetery and intercede for those who have fallen asleep.

First they must make peace with God and implore God for the soul of the one who has gone to Him. That is the purpose. And what happens with many people is deeply sorrowful—not because of malice, but through ignorance and even from their desire to offer hospitality. They set a meal before those who have come to express their condolences, and so forth.

But what is a person actually doing? For, according to Great Basil, “The good is not good unless it is done well.” Good, he says, is not truly good unless it is done in the right way. Therefore, the greatest virtue for human beings is discernment: the ability to discern whether what is called good really is good, because many times it may not be good at all.

Then comes the next question: “An answer to all of this, Mr. Panagiotis: people have written to you repeatedly asking whether it is a sin for a woman to cut her hair, and you answered us, but not with an actual canon.”

“Is there such a prohibitory Canon of a Synod, or is this merely what certain priests and speakers prefer?” Someone will say, “I do not have the text before me.” They will say the same about me. “I shall neither rest nor believe it unless I see it written down, either as a Canon or as a commandment.”

Well, I don't know whether that lady is here with us tonight. But I would urge you: read the seventeenth canon of the Council of Gangra. You'll find it in the Holy Pedalion, the Rudder, on page 328.

That Canon excommunicates—yes, excommunicates. It is not speaking of women who cut their hair merely for fashion.

...out of fashion, but also those who cut their hair for that so-called ascesis, or ascetic discipline, thinking, “If I cut my hair, I will become more humble,” and so on, “and my prayer will be heard.” In a related matter, we have cases of women who dressed as men and cut their hair like men. But they did so for genuine ascesis: although they were women, they concealed their sex in order to present themselves as men. Likewise, we also have men who presented themselves as women.

There are women—and you know of one—who lived disguised as men. They even said that one of them had fathered a child, and although the child had been conceived by someone else, she took it, raised it, and brought it up. But when she died at the monastery gate and they went to prepare the body for burial, instead of finding Theodore they found Theodora, and they were left speechless.

So this canon excommunicates the woman who cuts off her hair for what she imagines is reverence and ascetic discipline. And this is quite apart from what Paul says in the eleventh chapter of the First Epistle to the Corinthians, where he says that it is a dishonor for a woman to cut her hair, just as it is for a man if he wears his hair long. A man who grooms and keeps long hair is dishonored. And it is the same for a woman when she cuts her hair off.

If she cuts her hair short, Paul says, then let her be shaved as well. But just as it is shameful for a person’s head to be shaved, so it is for a woman to cut off her hair. So if she wants written authorities, she should seek them there: the seventeenth Canon of the Council of Gangra.

Listen to this, in case you don't have a Pedalion — the Rudder, the book of the canons — and for those of you who are curious enough to look it up. Here is what the canon says: "If any woman, out of a supposed asceticism, cuts off her hair, which God gave her as a reminder of her subjection..." A woman wears her hair so that she will always remember that she is under her husband. But look — she has climbed up above the man, and that's why she doesn't need it anymore.

“The command of subjection — let her be anathema.” Let her be anathematized, this woman who transgresses what Paul says. And this too the Fathers received from Paul, who says that the woman ought to have authority upon her head — that is, a sign of her husband's authority, that she is under her husband, that she is under his authority.

This signifies her submission to her husband: the natural covering of her hair and the outward covering of the headscarf. A woman cannot be in the Church praying without a head covering. If not a headscarf, then she must certainly wear a hat, so that her head is covered whenever she wishes to pray or enters the church.

It is not so that someone may display her hair with adornments and all the rest, as though in a fashion show. No—it is so that she may cover her head, and this is necessary. This is found in 1 Corinthians 11:3–10. For this reason, Emperor Theodosius also enacted that women who cut off their hair should be expelled from the churches.

And any bishops who accepted such women were to be deposed from the episcopacy, as Sozomen relates in his Ecclesiastical History, Book Seven, chapter 16.

So there are written testimonies as well. What more do you want from me? Did you think we were drawing everything from the unwritten tradition, from what is not written down? There are written texts too, then. And just below that, there is also the matter of dress — he says — the matter of dress as it stands in Scripture: that women may not put on men's clothing.

The Council of Gangra, in its thirteenth Canon, says: “If any woman, under the pretext of ascesis, changes her clothing and, instead of the customary clothing of a woman, puts on that of a man, let her be anathema.”

You may also consult the sixty-second Canon of the Sixth Ecumenical Council and its cross-references. Those of you who have the Pedalion should read the cross-references as well, and you will find other parallel passages that confirm this teaching.

So there are canons — but there is something in the Old Testament as well. I don't know whether you're aware of this: there is Deuteronomy 22:5. Because the matter of how a woman dresses and how a man dresses concerned God fifteen hundred years before Christ, and Deuteronomy was written by Moses, and this question of clothing concerned Him — and today it's a fashion. If He punishes the woman or the man even when it's done for asceticism, for an asceticism that is only asceticism in appearance, as we said a moment ago —

And then, what about fashion? There, as far as I remember, Deuteronomy 22:5 says that when a woman puts on men’s clothing, or a man puts on women’s clothing, it is an abomination before God—an abomination, something utterly repulsive. That is how it appears in the eyes of God.

Yet, as you see, fashion has taken hold of us, and we even find excuses: the baby’s legs are cold, the young woman’s legs are cold, and so on. Were your own legs cold? No, they were not. No one becomes cold merely because of the legs, so do not be deceived.

If Satan says it should be a little cap, then a little cap it will be, and she won't be cold. And that's not all. That's how it works. And if tomorrow he tells the young women to shave their heads bald, shaved bald they will be. Go ahead, be priests today, so that Tatatoulis can boast and say: "I took the beards off the priests and put them on the laymen."

Each person is free to choose, but each will also give an account. As we say in simple language, the way one makes one’s bed is the way one will sleep in it. These things, then, are written down, and we should pay attention to them.

Now we come to another matter. This concerns others more than the Orthodox. The question says: “Evangelicals do not accept that bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. What do you say? Is such a thing possible? How does it happen?”

In other words: “Is it possible for the bread to become the Body and the wine to become the Blood, as the Church teaches?” For the Evangelicals—the so-called Protestants, for example—do not accept this. They do it simply as a memorial. They raise a small cup of wine and a piece of bread and perform the Mystery, but they do not accept that a real transformation takes place.

And the question asks, “Is this possible? How does it happen?” They say it cannot happen because it is not natural; it is not outside nature. Yet nature itself is what refutes them decisively.

If, for example, I drink wine, does it not change within me? Does it contribute nothing to my blood and give me no strength? If I eat bread, does that bread not become flesh within me? What else does it become? What happens to the food and drink I take into myself? Do they not become body and blood? When someone gains weight, what does the doctor tell him? “Go on a diet. Cut down on bread and stop drinking alcohol.” Is that not what he says? And immediately you see the man begin to grow thin. His flesh no longer increases, nor does his blood.

Therefore, the bread and food I eat and the wine I drink are transformed within me and become body and blood. Is that not so? This is not merely natural; it is entirely natural. God made it this way; I did not. But let us go further. Christ was a man. When Christ ate bread and drank wine here on earth, what did they become in Him? In me they become the body and blood of Demetrios. In Him, did the bread and wine not become the Body and Blood of Christ? Thus bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ through Christ consuming them. Can He who established these laws not also transform the bread and wine so that they are His Body and His Blood? Can He not do it? How could He not? Lia says the same thing. She is pressing me to write about this, and in about fifteen days a small booklet will be published.

We shall answer this question, even though I have written about it here and there in other books. But regarding this subject in particular, notice one detail. Christ says, “Take, eat; this is My Body. Drink of it, all of you; this is My Blood.” Christ Himself says this.

Paul says the same thing in the eleventh chapter of First Corinthians: “For I received” that, on the night when Christ was betrayed, He did these things; He took the bread and spoke, and then He took the cup and spoke, and so forth. Christ says that these are His Body and His Blood, and Paul says the same. Then the Protestant comes along—Luther or Calvin—and says, “Let Christ say what He likes; listen to what I tell you.” What is happening here? Whom are we going to believe?

What does such a person do? He says that the bread signifies Christ’s Body and that the wine signifies His Blood. But Christ did not say “signifies”; He said “is.” Elsewhere Christ said, “Do this in remembrance of Me.” Yet they add one little word: “merely” in remembrance. But He did not say “merely.” He said, in effect, “What I am doing now, you also are to do, exactly as I am doing it”—not merely as an empty memorial.

And Orthodox Christians fall into these blunders as well, because people have come here from abroad to teach us Orthodoxy. They did not go elsewhere to preach, but came to distort the faith of Orthodox Christians who were already doing things properly. Be careful, because you flirt far too much with such ideas and begin to think that perhaps things could be understood that way.

They cannot be understood that way at all. Those who say that this transformation is contrary to nature are mistaken. It is entirely natural. When your mother eats greens and produces milk, a transformation has taken place. The food changes. When your child is weak, you feed him, and that food becomes flesh and blood; the food is transformed into flesh and blood. Nature itself, therefore, decisively refutes you, and you have made a serious mistake. Can He who created nature not do these things?

If irrational nature — creation that has no reason of its own — can do these things by a law the Creator gave it, will the One who made that nature not be able to do them? For this is why the priest says: "Send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts here set forth. And make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ. Amen. And that which is in this cup, the precious Blood of Your Christ. Amen. Changing them by Your Holy Spirit. Amen. Amen. Amen."

Not I—I am a sinner. You, O God, send down Your Holy Spirit and accomplish this work. And what do you do then?

Here is another question, and I see that it is quite timely: “Tell us a little about white candles. I got into trouble with my relatives when I told them that we should not buy the white ones.”

This is indeed timely, in a way. When we speak of a white candle, it is not really wax. It is paraffin. Today we have green candles, blue candles, red candles, and yellow candles.

I have not yet seen a black one. At least, I have not seen one. In any case, a proper candle is made from the wax that comes directly from the honeycomb, from the bee.

Wax—the kind that comes from bees. All the other mixtures are anything but wax. And a person, if he so desires...

Indeed, this conduct of God can become a cause for a man, through his wickedness, even to become a murderer of his own brother.

In this matter, besides ignorance, there is also one obstacle that I have heard mentioned many times: money. One kind costs fifty, sixty, or eighty drachmas a kilo, while the other costs two hundred and forty drachmas a kilo.

"How can I afford that much wax?" Then don't buy it. How much do you set aside for candles? "If I'm setting aside a hundred, why should I set aside two hundred and fifty?" And how much wax are you getting for it? White filler, tallow, paraffin, wicks stuck in there, and the rest of it. How much are you buying? Are you buying a kilo? Then buy half a kilo of the other kind — real wax, and pure. "Why should I? This is what I find at the church." Really? When it's something you're going to eat, you'll go round the whole market to find the one you want, not the one they hand you. Now, when it comes to giving an offering — say you want to give someone a gift.

Suppose it is for an acquaintance, a friend, a relative who is getting married or engaged, or for your director—a shirt, a tie, or something similar. As all people do, we express our courtesy toward other people. But what are we obliged to do? What do you do?

Do you buy whatever happens to be available in your neighborhood, or do you go downtown? You go to Lambropoulos, to Dragona, or to another reputable shop, so that the gift will at least bear a respected name and be something worthwhile. You are selective there, are you not? Then should you not be selective when the offering is for God? Your Paschal candle need not weigh seventy grams; let it weigh thirty-five. Let it be smaller. And here is something else: if you visit churches during these days, the smoke and soot inside will nearly suffocate you. Why should this happen? Why should we burn fat?

Why should we burn margarine? What is the reason? That is not wax. “But it is for my godchild.” Well, what has your godchild done to deserve that? Once, at Baptism, you anointed the child with oil, and now you cover the child with fat. Buy something proper, even though fashion has now added red ribbons and all the rest.

And is anyone really going to take offence if the candle doesn't have all those decorations on it? There's no need for that. Buy a proper wax candle. Just buy one. Once a year, that's when you get this for your godchild. Until the child grows up and won't take it from you anymore, because that's how they end up.

While the child is small and does not understand, he waits for his godmother or godfather to bring him his candle for the Resurrection. But when he grows older, he may take it and strike you over the head with it, because no one ever went to the child and explained what was said at his Baptism.

So now it comes down to me — what am I going to get out of this child? If I make ten drachmas more on the candle, well, the world hasn't come to an end. Besides, the money stays in the Church; it will be a help to the Church. So there are many who pay no attention to these things.

They focus on what the world wants. They focus on what fashion wants and on what commerce wants—commerce, because merchants make more profit from one kind than from the other.

I once spoke with someone who said, “Where could we possibly find so many beehives?”

Let the candle be smaller, and there will be enough beehives. Besides, you know that beeswax is also imported from abroad. And if we wished, we could do what the villages do: they have their own wax and make their own candles from their own beehives.

This year I went to speak at the feast of Saint Charalambos, and I found women encircling the church with a long beeswax candle as the fulfillment of a vow. They wound it all the way around the church—I do not know how many times—and they had not bought it; they had made it themselves.

We simply do not want to make the effort. Whenever I go to Patras, a friend is always waiting for me at the station. When we arrive, we first go to venerate at the church of Saint Andrew. Then we go to his village, receive the blessing, and afterward go to speak in the evening.

As soon as we reach the church, he reaches into his inside pocket and gives me a small candle, keeping another for himself. It is pure beeswax. Now he has asked me to bring him wax from here. One kilo of wax costs two hundred and forty drachmas and makes three hundred to three hundred and fifty small candles. Each one costs less than a drachma.

I take one little candle. I give my drachma, my two drachmas, or my five drachmas to Saint Andrew. I do not take a candle from there; I light the little candle my friend gives me, make my metanoia, venerate, and leave. We can find ways like this, but we are not ignorant or indifferent.

When it comes to the things where we ought to be selective, we must be selective.

Take care over the oil you bring, the incense you bring, the prosphoron you bring, and the candle you bring. These should be the very best, the choicest, and the most costly, because they are for God, not for people. There can be no cutting corners.

That sort of thing is bad for the lungs. So tell your relatives that they're wrong. If they don't have much money, let them buy a smaller candle. How long are they going to hold it, anyway? They'll stand outside the church, hear the 'Christ is Risen,' and then go off for the magiritsa.

After the magiritsa, what do they need the candle for? Yes, the candle should be pure wax. And we too should take care that the candle we hold is made of pure wax. We should accept nothing else, whether at a Baptism or at a Holy Matrimony. Someone asked, “Should we buy two large candles, even though we cannot afford them?” We will buy pure wax candles. And indeed, it was quite remarkable: they tied a thin ribbon around them, and the little children held them.

Two Paschal candles—one at about one-forty and the other at one-twenty—made of fine wax, with the lovely fragrance of beeswax. Our Church has so many beautiful things; our Christ has given us so much. Why should we not choose the best? If another person does not understand, then enlighten him.

As I said earlier, you are not going to pull out a pistol; simply enlighten him. If he can understand and wishes to put it into practice, well and good, because little by little we must return to what is right. Let us not be led astray through ignorance or imagination, because God does not receive such offerings as He would receive something proper and fitting for each occasion, especially within the Church.

There is another matter, and this too is serious.

Since all spiritual fathers have the authority to absolve sins, why, then, should we be selective about whom we choose? Many people ask this question, and many have received an answer from certain people. When they wish to make their confession, they ask:

“Do you know a good spiritual father?”

But what if the spiritual father is no good?

Whether spiritual father A is sinless or spiritual father B is sinful, neither one cleanses you of your sins himself. That is not the issue. As regards the power and authority to absolve sins, all of them, when they put on the epitrachelion, have full authority, because it is not the priest who absolves sins; Christ absolves them through the priest. The priest is simply an instrument.

This is what the priest says when he places the stole over the person making confession: “You, O Lord, have said, ‘Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed.’ Therefore, You, O Lord, loose this servant of Yours as well.” One priest will say this, and so will the other.

Each of them will read the prayer of absolution from the service book. But if I am seeking a good spiritual father, that is another matter. Many people seek a harsh spiritual father. Such people are proud and do not yet realize it.

Many others seek an easygoing confessor. They have not yet advanced spiritually.

Why do you want him to be harsh and strict? Does he not suit you? Do you think what he told you was too lenient? Tighten your own reins. Why should he have to tighten them for you, when you are capable of more advanced lessons and a greater struggle?

But there is also the possibility of falling into error from the right, through excessive rigor. Another person seeks an easygoing spiritual father: “He gives me a very severe penance. I want him not to punish me, but simply to forgive everything.” In that case, you do not want someone to read you a prayer of absolution; you want someone to read you a prayer of congratulations.

Then he ought to congratulate you. He should say: “Congratulations, my child, for killing your children. Congratulations, my child, for committing fornication, for lying, for not receiving Holy Communion, for not fasting, and for not going to Holy Confession. Congratulations!”

Both have departed from the truth. As far as possible, what we should seek in a spiritual father is experience and discernment.

For in the Gospel there is a saying of great importance here: “If the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a pit.” If the spiritual father is spiritually blind, and the sinner is blind, and one leads the other, then both of them, the Gospel says, will fall into the pit, into the hole, into the ditch.

Therefore, we should seek neither a harsh spiritual father nor an ignorant one, but, if possible, one who has discernment. This leads us to a brief aside: when there is no truly spiritual spiritual father—and pay attention to that description, because we have spiritual fathers who are not spiritual—

They have the power and authority to bind and to loose. But they do not have the spiritual discernment to guide you. That is why they are confessors without truly being spiritual fathers. If necessary, you will go to them for Confession, but do not expect spiritual guidance from them.

Then, when someone lacks a true spiritual father, he may have one confessor to absolve him of his sins, since not just anyone can do that. I may be able to give you sound guidance, but I cannot forgive even one of your sins—or even my own.

He may also have as a spiritual guide a layman, a monk who does not have the authority to absolve sins, or someone else whom he consults because that person has discernment, spirituality, and a gift from our God. God has endowed him differently. The ideal is for the spiritual father and confessor also to be truly spiritual, with sound Christian judgment. You should not go to confession only to have him say, “I have a niece; do you know someone she might marry?” and begin arranging marriages. Not that this is forbidden—God forbid, I am not saying that. There are indeed cases in which many people have found a wife or husband through the guidance of their spiritual father.

“I know a good young woman. She may be poor, but I know her character. I know a good young man; he may be poor, but he is honest,” and so on. I am not saying that such arrangements do not happen. But there are also cases where the matter is treated too lightly.

The most important thing in a spiritual father is discernment.

Once, a man went to confess to an elder who had spent many years in the ascetic life. He told him about the temptations of fornication he was suffering. When the elder heard that the man had such temptations and the like, he drove him to despair.

“You are lost,” he told him. “You will go to Hell. What are you thinking? What kind of things are these?” The man was devastated. He bowed his head and said to himself, “If I am going to Hell here on the mountain anyway, I might as well go down to the city. Perhaps I can be saved there—perhaps I can marry, or whatever it may be, and escape this.”

So he gathered his things and left. It is said that on the road he met Abba Apollo—Abba Apollo, who had twenty-five thousand monks under his care, an entire lavra. Abba Apollo saw him looking gloomy and distressed and asked, “Brother, where are you going? What has happened? I can see that something is troubling you.” At first the man would not speak, but the abba drew him out, and he told him everything that had happened and that he was leaving.

"What are you saying?" he says to him. "The evil one has deceived you," he says. "The very thoughts that you have, young as you are," he says, "I have those same thoughts myself now, and I am an old man." Oh, how he comforted the man! And the man came back to himself.

Abba Apollo came back with him and said, “Go to your cell.”

The other elder had shown no discernment and had driven the man to despair. Abba Apollo, through his discernment, brought the brother back down the road

He went down to him to help his brother. Oh, how he strengthened that man! Because, you know, many things happen in a person’s life, and sometimes they can even drive us to suicide. They can bring us to such despair that we believe there is no salvation left for us. That is why a discerning spiritual father is needed—one who knows how to handle the matter and strengthen the person. To strengthen him. And the man turned back. “Who did this to him?” he asked. The man told him who it was. So Abba Paul set out and went...

to the hut of that elder, the spiritual father who had lacked discernment. He sat outside and offered a prayer. It made such an impression on me that I wrote it down, and I will repeat it to you. Listen to the prayer Abba Apollo offered to God: “Lord”—notice this detail—“grant him temptations according to Your will.” Temptations come to us for the spiritual benefit of each person.

“Ascension, Annunciation, Gospel…”—“so that through his own experience he may learn what he failed to learn throughout his long life: to have compassion on those who are under attack.” In other words, he prayed, “Lord, let him experience this storm and these temptations, so that he may learn.”

Immediately the Saint saw a dark figure begin tearing the elder’s hut apart and throwing down trees. Soon afterward the monk burst out of the hut as though possessed, with his bag over his shoulder, fleeing toward the world to satisfy his passions. Abba Apollo could not bear it for even a moment, and he called out to him: He called out, “Hey, where are you going? Where are you going? Wait a moment! You could not endure the temptation? Then why did you not comfort the other man, but instead sent him back into the world?” He told him, “Go back. Return to your cell, and from now on be careful to apply economy to the brethren.” The Saint prayed again, and the temptation left the elder. He became calm and made a metanoia, bowing in repentance before Abba Apollo. From then on, having suffered this himself, he became a comforter and physician to others.

A person, then, must have discernment. And we all need the counsel of other people. I will read you just one passage, so that you may see how greatly we need others. You know about Paul, do you not? He spoke with God, did he not?

He says: "I went up to Jerusalem, I saw Peter and James, and I laid before them the Gospel which I preach, lest somehow I am running, or have run, in vain." What he means is: I went to meet James and Peter, so as to say to them, "Is what I am preaching correct? Am I running in vain, or have I run in vain?" And who is saying this? It is Paul who goes to ask, to take counsel. See how much we need discernment, and how much we need spiritual guidance.

In any case, we shall stop here for now, praying that this evening our Lord will give us the strength to discern what is most right.

Όταν ευρισκόμεθα σε ένα περιβάλλον δύσκολο, σε καιρό νηστείας, τι να κάνουμε; Είναι αμαρτία εάν βρεθούμε σε μια χαρά, παραδείγματι, σε ένα τραπέζι, σε μια βάφτιση, σε έναν αρραβώνα; Εις ένα γάμο, εις μια κηδεία, εις ένα μνημόσυνο. Τι να κάνουμε, να καταλύσουμε ή να μην καταλύσουμε, ή να φέρουμε σύγχυση; Αντί να τους ευχαριστήσουμε, τους ανθρώπους να τους δυσαρεστήσουμε;

Δεν θέλουμε να σας χαλάσουμε τη χαρά σας, κάντε το Πάσχα σας εσείς. Όμως δεν πρέπει να παρασυρθούμε. Δεν νομίζεις ότι και αυτούς θα τους βοηθήσεις κατά κάποιον τρόπο; Και δεν νομίζεις ότι αύριο, όταν θα έρθει σε κρίση αυτός, ξέρεις τι θα πει του Χριστού;

Μα τι θα είναι προτιμότερο, να τον χαροποιήσεις και να τον κολάσεις ή να τον στενοχωρήσεις, να τον βοηθήσεις να σωθεί, αν θέλει; Τι είναι προτιμότερο; Και ο αγών του ανθρώπου στον κόσμο τούτον τι σκοπό έχει; Να παραμείνει για να δημιουργεί χαρές επίπλαστες εις τον κόσμο ή να διαφωτίζει τον κόσμο εν λόγω και έργω;

Λοιπόν, θα μου κοπούν οι μέρες το γρηγορότερο, να κολαστώ λιγότερο. Σκοπός όμως δεν είναι αυτός. Και δεν μπορεί να λέει ο άνθρωπος ότι «θα στενοχωρήσω, θα τους φέρω σε δύσκολη κατάσταση». Σε δύσκολη κατάσταση θα τον φέρει να σου κάνει αρνί, να σου κάνει μπριζόλες, να σου κάνει μια σαλάτα; Θα τον φέρει σε δύσκολη κατάσταση;

Είναι αδυνατότερο από το μη σωστό. Μέχρι πότε θα είμεθα λαπάδες εμείς οι Χριστιανοί, εφόσον έχουμε την αλήθεια; Και με ποιο δικαίωμα θα αντικρίσουμε αυτή την αλήθεια και δεν θα την πούμε, οποιοσδήποτε κι αν είναι;

Γιατί πολλές φορές καμπτόμεθα από το πρόσωπο. Ποιο είναι το πρόσωπο; Ποιο είναι; Ο γαμπρός σου, η νύφη σου, η πεθερά σου, ο αδελφός σου, ο προϊστάμενός σου. Ποιο είναι το πρόσωπο; Μεγαλύτερο από τον Χριστό είναι το πρόσωπο αυτό; Τι είναι αυτό το πρόσωπο επιτέλους;

Σκεφτείτε, καταλύουν τη νηστεία, λένε του Χριστού, «Σε διαγράφουμε», ταυτόχρονα σε κάνουνε μνημόσυνο. Τι κάνουν στο μνημόσυνο; Πάνε να προσευχηθούν στον Χριστό για την ψυχή. Μα θα σας ακούσει ο Χριστός, εφόσον παραβαίνετε τας εντολάς του;

Ένα άλλο, η συνέχεια είναι το εξής. Αυτό είναι λίγο με τους άλλους, όχι με τους Ορθοδόξους. Λέγει, οι Ευαγγελικοί δεν παραδέχονται με τους χείρες του Άρτου και Ίνου, η σώμα και αίμα Χριστού. Τι λέτε; Είναι δυνατόν; Πώς γίνεται αυτό;

Ο Παύλος, το ίδιο λέει και ο Παύλος στην πρώτη προς Κορινθίους, στο 11ο. «Όπως παρέλαβα», λέγει, ότι ο Χριστός τη νύχτα που παρεδίδετο έκαμε αυτό και αυτό, λαμβών τον άρτον είπε και το ποτήριον είπε κλπ. Αυτά τα λέει ο Χριστός, ότι είναι το σώμα μου και το αίμα μου. Και ο Παύλος λέει το ίδιο. Έρχεται τώρα ο Προτεστάντης, έρχεται ο Λούθηρος, ο Καλβίνος και λέει: «Άσ' τον να λέει ο Χριστός· άκου τι σου λέω εγώ». Τι γίνεται τώρα εδώ πέρα; Ποιον θα πιστεύσει;

Δεν είναι καθόλου έτσι. Ότι έχουν λάθος αυτοί που λένε ότι είναι θέμα αφύσικο η μετουσίωση. Είναι φυσικότατο. Όταν η μάνα σου τρώει βλήτα και κάνει γάλα, γίνεται μετουσίωση. Αλλάζει. Και εφόσον το παιδί σου είναι αδύνατο, του δίνεις τροφή και κάνει σάρκα και αίμα· γίνεται μετουσίωση της τροφής σε σάρκα και αίμα. Άρα, λοιπόν, αυτή η φύση σε κεραυνοβολεί. Και έχεις κάνει μεγάλο λάθος. Αυτός που έφτιαξε τη φύση δεν τα μπορεί, λοιπόν;

Όχι εγώ, εγώ αμαρτωλός. Εσύ να κατεβάσεις και να κάνεις αυτή τη δουλειά. Και τι κάνεις;

Έναν γνωστό, έναν φίλο, κάποιον συγγενή σου, παντρεύεις, αρραβωνιάζεις, τον διευθυντή σου, ένα πουκάμισο, μια γραβάτα και λοιπά. Όπως κάνουμε όλοι οι άνθρωποι, σαν άνθρωποι, εκδηλώνουμε τις φιλοφρονήσεις μας προς ανθρώπους. Μα τι υποχρεωμένοι; Τι κάνεις;

Ό,τι σου προσφέρουν στη γειτονιά ή κατεβαίνεις κάτω; Και πηγαίνεις στο Λαμπρόπουλο, πηγαίνεις στη Δραγώνα, σε άλλα σοβαρά καταστήματα, ώστε να έχουν μια φίρμα τουλάχιστον, ότι κάτι σοβαρό. Πως είσαι εκλεκτικός εκεί, ε; Εδώ που είναι για τον Θεό, να μην είσαι εκλεκτικός; Ας μην είναι η λαμπάδα σου 70 γραμμάρια, ας είναι 35, μια μικρότερη. Κι ένα νέο όμως: πηγαίνετε αυτές τις μέρες σε εκκλησίες, θα σκάσετε μέσα από την καπνιά, από τη μαυρίλα η οποία υπάρχει. Για ποιο λόγο να υπάρχει αυτό; Γιατί να κάψουμε τα λίπη;

Ξέρεις κανέναν καλό πνευματικό;

Γιατί τον θέλεις σκληρόν, αυστηρόν; Δεν σου κάνει εσένα; Νομίζεις ότι αυτό που σου είπε είναι μαλακό; Σφίξ' τα λουριά του εαυτού σου εσύ. Γιατί να σε σφίξει εκείνος, όσον είσαι για ανώτερα μαθηματικά, για περισσότερον αγώνα;

Πρέπει, λοιπόν, ο άνθρωπος να είναι διακριτικός. Και ο άνθρωπος έχει την ανάγκη της νουθεσίας των άλλων ανθρώπων. Ένα σας διαβάζω μόνο, να δείτε πόσο έχουμε την ανάγκη των άλλων ανθρώπων. Ξέρετε, περί Παύλου, ε; Ομιλούσε με τον Θεό, έτσι;
