My beloved listeners in Christ, rejoice in the Lord. We are together again today, with the help of God, in order to say a few words concerning certain views held by the Jehovah's Witnesses. What we are going to say has to do with what they say in general about the Holy Trinity. It is very characteristic: the Jehovah's Witnesses fight the doctrine of the Holy Trinity with stubbornness, and their stubbornness is so great that, as they say,

they cannot find the term 'Trinity' used even once in the Scriptures. The origins of the teaching about the Trinity, they say, came from the ancient Babylonians and Egyptians. Into the Christian books, they say, the term 'Trinity' was introduced in the second century by two religious men: Tertullian, in Latin, and a certain Theophilus, called the bishop of Antioch, in Greek. And only in the fourth century, they say,

that is in 325 after Christ, at the Council in Nicaea, that is at the First Ecumenical Council, was the doctrine of the Church ratified. So the obvious conclusion that appears, they say, is that Satan is the originator of the doctrine of the Trinity. This is what they write in one of their books, entitled 'Let God Be True,' on page 101. Starting from this false premise, they then devote themselves methodically to the refutation of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity,

misinterpreting all those passages of Holy Scripture that speak, openly or indirectly, about the divinity of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Thus they accept only the divinity of the Father, who for them is not a father at all, and whom they call by the Hebrew name Jehovah. Jehovah is the name of God in Hebrew, and translated into Greek it means 'I am He who is.' That is, it signifies the supreme Being, the One who has the cause of His own existence within Himself;

the unchangeable, that is, the eternal, the absolute; in a word, God. For this reason these Hebrews, out of reverence for the name of God, pronounced 'Adonai,' which the Seventy translated as 'Lord.' From them the writers of the New Testament also took this. For this reason, in the language of Holy Scripture, the words Jehovah, God, and Lord are synonymous. It is also worth noting that the New Testament does not mention the word Jehovah even a single time. Instead of it, in the passages it quotes from the Old Testament,

it uses the words 'God' or 'Lord.' The Jehovah's Witnesses, however, despite this, kept the Hebrew name Jehovah, and at one of their assemblies, which took place in 1939 in the city of Columbus in the state of Ohio in the United States of America, they voted that they wish to be known and to be called by the name with which the Lord God named them. In Isaiah 43:10 and 44:8, that is, 'witnesses of Jehovah.' There Isaiah writes: 'You are my witnesses, says Jehovah.'

This they cite in their book, the one we mentioned a little earlier, in 'Let God Be True,' on pages 221 and 222. Thus, even though we read in the New Testament that Christ too, like the God of the Old Testament, named his disciples his witnesses, when he sent them out into the world with the words: 'You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you shall be my witnesses to the end of the earth' — this is in Acts, in 1:8 — nevertheless, they do not want to be called witnesses of Christ,

as the Apostles called themselves, which we see in Acts 2:32. They demote Christ from the only-begotten Son of God to a great witness of Jehovah. The same book, 'Let God Be True,' states this on page 222. But besides the divinity of Jehovah God, the Jehovah's Witnesses accept the divinity neither of the Son nor of the Holy Spirit. And concerning the Son, they say that he is none other than the Archangel Michael. This is what they write in one of their books, entitled 'New Heavens and a New Earth,' on page 31.

And they even say that Jehovah used him as his instrument, or his servant, to create all the other creatures. This they state in another of their books, which is entitled 'What Has Religion Done,' on page 37. This is exactly what the first Christian heretics taught, those called the Gnostics. Yet in another of their books, Let God Be True, page 129, contradicting what they said earlier, they teach that Jesus Christ is the greater Moses, who is the head of the heavenly Church, as we saw above. Concerning the Holy Spirit,

they say that only one passage of the New Testament contains the words 'and the Holy Spirit, ' in First John 5:7. But this word, as has been established, is spurious, they go on to say. According to them, then, the Holy Spirit is nothing other than the invisible, active force of Almighty God, which moves his servants to carry out his will, though they ground this opinion of theirs on no passage of Holy Scripture at all. They write this in that same book of theirs, 'Let God Be True,' on page 108. Thus, concerning the Son, they teach what Arius also taught: namely,

that the Son is not God as the Father is, but the first created being. And concerning the Holy Spirit, they teach what the ancient Pneumatomachi, the opponents of the Holy Spirit, taught. They write these things in their book New Heavens, on page 24. The Jehovah's Witnesses rest their teaching about the Son, as Arius did, on certain scriptural passages of the New Testament. The first is found in Revelation 3:14,

which says: 'These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God.' And there is another passage, Colossians 1:15, which says: 'Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.' And there is a third, from Proverbs 8:22: 'The Lord created me as the beginning of his ways.' We are referring to 'What Has Religion Done for Mankind, ' pages 36 to 37,

to their book New Heavens and a New Earth, pages 24 to 25, and to 'Let God Be True,' page 32. But to the attentive listener or reader, and to the prudent student of Holy Scripture, beloved, it is at once clear that the Jehovah's Witnesses grievously misinterpret these three passages, and that they pass over others which speak openly of the Holy Trinity and of the divinity of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. For the correct meaning of the first of the three passages quoted above is not that the Son is the first created being in creation,

but something entirely different. To understand it correctly, we must know that the word “Amen” is Hebrew and means “truly. And because in this passage the word has before it the definite article 'the, ' it is taken as a noun and means 'the only true one,' that is, God. Therefore the correct interpretation of this passage is as follows: These things says the Amen, that is, the true and trustworthy witness, the creative principle through whom

all the creatures of God were made. That is, the one who speaks here is Christ, which the Jehovah's Witnesses do not deny. He calls himself truth and true. Only God, however, is by nature truth and true. That this is the correct sense of the passage is proved by the fact that the very same Christ who said these words of himself said also something else: 'I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty,' in Revelation 1:8 and 21:6.

The Jehovah's Witnesses know very well, though it does not suit them to confess it, that when Christ says 'I am the One who is, ' he is calling himself Jehovah, that is, God, because Jehovah means, as we said earlier, precisely 'I am the One who is.' And so that there might not be even the slightest doubt that the Son who speaks here to John is fully God and Lord and Almighty, after the 'I am the Alpha and the Omega' he added the words 'says the Lord God, the Almighty.' And he added the explanation that he is the One who is,

that is, the one who exists now; the One who was, that is, the one who existed before the ages without beginning; and the One who is to come, that is, the one who will exist in the future eternally, without end, the Almighty. Is the Son, then, a creature? For if he were, he could not say 'I am the One who is, ' that is, 'I am God.' Likewise, the second passage, Colossians 1:15, does not carry the meaning the Jehovah's Witnesses wrongly assign to it. The true meaning of this passage too is

that the Son of God's love (Colossians 1: 13) is the exact image of the invisible God and the firstborn, that is, the only-begotten Son of God, as Holy Scripture says elsewhere, in John 1:14 and 1:18, in 3:16 to 18, and in 1 John 4:9, begotten of the essence of the Father before all creation, that is, before all creatures, eternally; for as the next verse completes it, Colossians 1:16, through him were created all things

that exist in the heavens and on earth. Besides, anyone who knows Greek, at least, knows that there is an enormous difference in meaning between the words 'firstborn' and 'first creature.' The word 'firstborn' means first-begotten of the essence of the Father, while 'first creature' means the first thing God made out of matter, which God took from outside himself. For this reason the Son himself is conscious that he is God, equal to his Father and begotten of his essence. That is why he uses for himself names and

titles which the Father also uses for himself. For just as the Father says, "I am the first and I am the last, and besides me there is no God," as we read in Isaiah chapter 44, so too the Son says of himself, "Thus says the Lord, the first and the last," which we read in Revelation 2:8. And again: “I am the First and the Last, and the Living One” (Revelation 1:18). And just as the Father, when He says, “I am the First, ” does not mean that there is another God in relation to whom He is first, as though He were first by comparison with another, but rather that He is first as the cause of all things,

so too the Son says that He is the First as the image of the First—that is, of the Father—as we read in 2 Corinthians 4:4 and Colossians 1:15; and because He is eternally in the Father and the Father in Him, as we read in John 17: 21, without beginning together with the Father and coeternal with Him. We can understand this difference in meaning between the words “firstborn” and “first-created” more clearly if we compare the difference between the verbs “to beget” and “to create. ” In the third of the scriptural passages before us, which Jehovah’s Witnesses also

interpret in whatever way best suits them, the passage in full reads as follows: “The Lord created me as the beginning of His ways, for His works; before all the mountains He begets me. ” Proverbs 8:22–25. It must be noted here, however, that according to many translations the Hebrew text reads, "The Lord had me at the beginning of his ways, " and not "he created me as the beginning of his ways, " as the Seventy translated it;

but the Jehovah's Witnesses always adopt whichever translation suits them. Let us grant, then, that the correct translation is "he created me" rather than "he had me." Even according to the Seventy, when this passage is rightly interpreted, it does not mean that the Son is a created being. For "he created me as the beginning of his ways, for his works" does not mean "he created me so that I might do his works, " as the Arians interpreted it in former times and as the Jehovah's Witnesses interpret it today, in order to maintain that the Son is the first created thing.

It means that the Lord created him after the works which existed before he himself was created, and to which he sends him, as the phrase "for his works" makes clear.

And these works of God, already in existence, are chiefly the human beings to whom the Son is sent. From this it is clear, beloved, that this passage is speaking of the Incarnation of the Word (Logos) of God. Prophesying about it in this passage, Scripture said, in the manner of a proverb, "he created me, " in order to indicate the created human nature which the Son assumed at the Incarnation, becoming man, on account of which he often calls himself the Son of Man. And concerning this same thing, a little earlier,

Scripture again says, "Wisdom, who built herself a house, " Proverbs 9:1, meaning the human body, in which the Son and Word (Logos) of God dwelt at the Incarnation. So "he created me" also signifies the reason for which the Word (Logos) became man, since the Incarnation was holy and was for the salvation of man; and it stands in direct relation and unity with what is said just below, "and before all the mountains he begets me, " which signifies the eternal and everlasting generation of the Son from the essence of the Father before all creation. Nowhere,

my beloved listeners—and I want you to understand this—does Holy Scripture say that the Son is the first creature. If He were a creature, He would not be called the only-begotten Son of God, nor would He Himself say, “The Father begets Me. ” And although Wisdom says in Proverbs, “He created Me,” this is rightly said, because it refers to His created human nature, which He assumed in the Incarnation, and not to His divine nature. And again it rightly said "begets me, " in order to signify his everlasting generation, indeed his pre-eternal and unoriginate generation,

from the Father and from the essence of the Father. By "he created me" it intends to speak of his humanity, and by "begets me" it speaks of his divinity, because Christ is the God-Man; he is not only man, nor only God. By these two expressions, then, "he created me" and "he begets me, " there is clearly prophesied in Proverbs the Incarnation of the only-begotten Son, who exists pre-eternally in the bosom of the Father, and his twofold nature, the divine and the human. That is to say, the incarnate Son of God, Jesus Christ, is perfect and true God,

like the Father, and perfect and true man, like us, yet without sin. Great is the difference, beloved listeners, in the meaning of the expressions "he created me" and "he begets me." Knowing this difference, Scripture did not say "In the beginning he begot, " nor "in the beginning was, " but "In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth." But of the Son and Word (Logos) of God it said only, "In the beginning was the Word, " in order to show that created things began to come into being out of nothing through the Word (Logos) of God, whereas the Word (Logos) of God was always in the Father,

existing in him without beginning and everlastingly. For the Father was never without reason—that is, without the Word (Logos). And the Word, begotten of Him before all ages, is the true and only-begotten Son of God, without beginning and eternal together with the Father, and not a creature. Likewise, this teaching of the Jehovah's Witnesses, that the Son is the first created thing of God, reminds us of the similar teaching of Arius, who often repeated, "There was once when the Son was not." There was, he says, a time when the Son did not exist.

And another opinion of his: "There was once a time when the Word (Logos) was not." And again, "The Son was not before he was begotten." No Confession of Faith ever taught these things about the Son and Word (Logos) of God, for they would lead to the absurdity that there was once a time when the Father was not the Father, that there was once a time when God was without his Word, without Logos. And a God without Logos cannot be God; and so right reason, simple logic, teaches that God was never without Logos, that is, never without his Word. And since God had his Word (Logos) pre-eternally, and the Word (Logos),

as Scripture teaches, is the Son of God, he undoubtedly also had... So when Scripture says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God," which we read in John 1: 1, it teaches clearly that the Son and Word (Logos) of God coexists always and everlastingly with the Father. And the Son and Word (Logos) of God himself confirms it in Revelation: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty," Revelation 1:8. But the Jehovah's Witnesses, as we said above,

know well and write explicitly that "I am the One who is" means Jehovah, in "Let God Be True," page 61. Therefore, if they were of good faith, they would have to admit that in this passage Christ calls himself Jehovah, that is, Lord and God, from whom no one can take away his Godhead and the eternity of his existence. Paul, who has the nous—the spiritual mind—of Christ, teaches the same, as he writes in 1 Corinthians 2:10. He also writes in Romans:

“From whom Christ came according to the flesh, He who is God over all, blessed unto the ages. ” Romans 9:5. Here, then, he clearly sets forth two natures: divine and human. With all of this in mind, then, we understand clearly that when Christ says in other passages of Scripture, concerning that day no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father, which we read in Mark 13:

32, and that other passage where he says, My Father is greater than I, in John 14:28, he is speaking as a man. For as a man he did not know, since it belongs to man to be ignorant, to hunger, and the like. And for this reason he shows here the ignorance of his human nature; and again, it was as a man that he said, My Father is greater than I. There is no doubt that it was as a man that he also said, I go to the Father, since as the Son of God, born of the essence of the Father, he never left the bosom of the Father, as he tells us in John 1:18.

Thus, when He said, “He created me,” “nor does the Son know, ” and “My Father is greater than I, ” He said all these things to reveal His human nature, which He assumed through the Incarnation. In the same way, He Himself also said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30), “the Father is in Me, and I am in Him” (John 10:38), and “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:7). It is His divinity and His equality with the Father that He reveals to us. Teaching the same truths again, He Himself says in other words:

“No one truly knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone truly know the Father except the Son. ” These things are not mentioned. Matthew 11:27. If, as it says here, the Son alone truly knows the Father—for no one has ever seen God except His only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father and has revealed Him to us—then without doubt the Son Himself also knows all that the Father knows. We are made absolutely certain of this,

if we pay attention, also from the confession of the disciples, who said, Now we know all things. When Jesus heard this confession of his disciples, he not only did not correct them, but even praised them: Now you believe, because they had not believed earlier that he knew all things. From these things too it is clear that the Son and Word of God is ignorant of nothing, of all created things, and that he too is all-knowing, just as the Father is. We will stop here for now, God willing,

and continue in another talk; and again, rejoice in the Lord. Beloved listeners, rejoice in the Lord. Allow me again today to speak a few words that are connected with, and are a continuation of, our previous talk concerning the thoughts of Jehovah's Witnesses about the truths of the Holy Trinity, about the Godhead of our Lord Jesus Christ and of the Holy Spirit. Those of you who were with us in our previous talk will remember that we paused at a point where we were, in a way, making a defense concerning the Godhead of our Lord Jesus Christ.

But Jehovah's Witnesses still insist on their opinion and try to interpret the words of our Christ in their own way, one that will serve their teaching. Allow me to pass on to you one of their interpretations concerning what our Christ said, I and the Father are one. Do you know how they interpret it? Although it is plainly evident that we are one with the Father, they say, just as the Arians also used to say, that because the Son wills the

very things that the Father wills, and disagrees with him neither in judgment nor in thought, for this reason the Son and the Father are one. Listen to that. In the same way Jehovah's Witnesses also say that, just as Christ and the members of his body are regarded as one, so too Jehovah and Christ are regarded as one, because they are one in agreement, purpose, and organization. Was that not the logical conclusion? Jesus, they go on, would not have said,

My Father is greater than I, and, Not my will, but yours be done. So they write in one of their books called Let God Be True, on pages 104 to 105. As you can see, this interpretation of Jehovah's Witnesses is completely mistaken. If it were so, as they say, then the angels in heaven too, not to mention the other created things, the sun, the moon, the stars, the whole of nature, which faithfully follow the will of God, could say, We and the Father are one, because we too will what God wills. Then again, many people lived according to the will of God, such as the Mother of Christ,

such as John the Forerunner, such as Paul, who became an imitator of Christ, and others; yet no one ever dared to say, I and the Father are one, or, I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or, He who has seen me has seen the Father. I and the Father are one, or, I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or, He who has seen me has seen the Father. These words the Son of God, Jesus Christ, had the right to say, in order to teach us that he was begotten of the essence of the Father, and for this reason is one with the Father, and is in the Father and the Father in him,

and is in himself God just as the Father is. And this is the correct interpretation of the passages which Jehovah's Witnesses systematically misinterpret in order to fit them to their teachings. And so they appear to base them on Holy Scripture. But there are also other passages of Holy Scripture, I would like you to know, which speak explicitly of his Godhead, and which Jehovah's Witnesses systematically pass over, because they are not open to misinterpretation. For example, Christ says, I am the truth, John 14:6; I am the light, John 8:12;

and, You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am, John 13:13. In these passages, as you see, Christ affirms categorically about himself that he is the truth, that he is the light, that he is the Lord, that is, that he is God. For God alone is the truth; God alone is light; God alone is the Lord. Having learned this truth from His own lips, the disciples also confessed it.

Thomas called Him, “My Lord and my God. ” Christ not only did not deny that He is God and Lord, but confirmed it, saying to Thomas, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. ” Paul also says that Christ is God. In Romans 9:5 he writes, “God over all, blessed forever, ” and in Titus 2:13 he says, “Our great God and Savior. ” James likewise confesses Jesus Christ as God and Lord. First John, chapter five, verse twenty.

John also writes, "And we are in him that is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God." That is from the First Epistle of John, chapter five. And so that no doubt may remain about this, Holy Scripture speaks even more plainly in support of the divinity of Christ. To which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"? And again, when he brings the Firstborn into the world,

he says, "And let all the angels of God worship him." These words are in Hebrews, chapter one, verses five, six, and verse eight. And a little further down, "Your throne, O God." God himself says that the Son is God. That is why he commands his angels to worship him. If the Son were not the Son of God, of the very same essence and equal with the Father, I do not think God would ever have commanded the angels to worship him. For he would then be contradicting his very own self, since he himself again commands,

"You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve, " in Matthew, chapter four, verse ten. It becomes even clearer that Jehovah's Witnesses, with utterly senseless stubbornness, transgress the Word of God, who teaches that the Son of God is neither the first thing created nor any other creature, but true God, just as the Father is. And through him the Father commands the angels to worship him. He commands the angels to worship his Son, and he commands men as well to do the same.

Therefore Jehovah's Witnesses are lying when they call themselves witnesses of Jehovah. For they do not comply with the command to worship his Son in adoration as God, as the angels do, and so they transgress his express command. If, on the other hand, they say that they do worship Christ in adoration, as God commands, even though they believe him to be a creature, then again they are transgressors of another command of God, which says, "You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve." For then they too, like idolaters, worship the creature rather than the Creator. That is in Romans, chapter one, verse twenty-five.

But it would be superfluous to cite still more passages of Holy Scripture that speak of the divinity of Christ, or to refute all the mistaken interpretations of scriptural passages by Jehovah's Witnesses, to which they resort in order to prove that the Son of God is supposedly God's first creature and not God, for that labor would compel us to extend ourselves beyond what is needful. What has been examined up to this point is, I think, enough to prove to them that they are not in the truth. Next,

let us say a few words about the Holy Spirit and the beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses concerning the Holy Spirit. They say that the Holy Spirit is not God, consubstantial and equal with the Father and the Son. Passages of Holy Scripture have been brought forward that speak plainly against them. But Jehovah's Witnesses try to prove that these are spurious. One such passage is that of John, in his First Epistle, chapter five, verse seven, which says,

"There are three that bear witness in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit." So they hasten at once to say that this passage is missing from all the Greek manuscripts before the fifteenth century, which proves, they claim, that it is spurious. It is also absent from all the ancient translations and from the ancient Greek Fathers up to the eleventh century, as well as from many Latin Fathers; and this fact, they say, is one of the strongest proofs that the passage is spurious. That is what they maintain.

The absence of this passage from the manuscripts, even if these are the oldest of those that have survived, does not necessarily mean that it is spurious. Nor again is its absence from the ancient translations and from the writings of the ancient Fathers an unshakable proof that it was not in the original text. There are many, very many possibilities that it had been omitted, very early on, through a copying error, from some of the first copies, from which other copies were then made, while in the meantime the originals were lost, along with all the manuscripts that contained this passage.

In this way its absence from the surviving manuscripts, and from the translations and the writings of the Fathers made from them, is excellently explained. And it seems that this is in fact how matters stand, for this passage is not entirely unknown. There are cases, for example, where the most ancient Greek manuscripts brought from the East contained it. This explains the fact that several Latin Fathers know the passage, such as Tertullian, for example, who makes mention of it,

and who flourished from the year one hundred fifty-five to two hundred forty. Cyprian, for example, who flourished in the year two hundred fifty-eight, and others. And there is testimony that the Church in Africa already had this passage in the text of Scripture it used as early as the fourth century, which means that the passage is known to have existed in the archetypal text. Let us take the other possibility. Even if we grant that this passage is spurious, as Jehovah's Witnesses maintain, this still does the Witnesses no good. For there are other passages of Scripture,

whose genuineness no one disputes, which state plainly that the Holy Spirit too is God, equal with the Father and the Son. The most important of these passages is the testimony of Christ himself, which Matthew included in his Gospel: "Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." That is Matthew, chapter twenty-eight, verse nineteen. What do we see in this passage? There is no word "Trinity," as Jehovah's Witnesses demand.

But there are the three Persons of the Holy Trinity, whose divinity is one. That is why Christ does not say "in the names, " but "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." That is, in the name of the Holy Trinity. Besides, if the Holy Spirit were not itself God too, equal with and inseparable from the Father and the Son, I do not think that our Lord would ever have commanded his disciples to baptize also in the name of the Holy Spirit, lest the false impression arise that the Holy Spirit too is God equal with the Father.

But when He commands us to be baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and then assures us that “he who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16), this means that He teaches us to believe in the divinity of all three Persons, in whose name we are to be baptized. And here is the indisputable foundation of the teaching about the Holy Trinity, so that the teaching about the Holy Trinity is the teaching of Christ himself and not an invention of human or satanic imagination, as the Witnesses claim.

And when the Jehovah's Witnesses say that Satan is the originator of the dogma of the Holy Trinity, as we read in their book Let God Be True, page 101, they blaspheme, and indeed a terrible blasphemy, because they call that very Christ Satan who taught us to believe in the Holy Trinity. Take heed, brethren; let us stand well, let us stand with fear; pay attention to these things I am telling you. That the Holy Spirit is God, equal to the Father and the Son, is taught also in other passages of the New Testament.

Christ himself says again: Amen I say to you, all their sins shall be forgiven to the sons of men, and the blasphemies with which they may blaspheme; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit has no forgiveness forever, but is guilty of eternal judgment (Mark 3:28). And blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is an unforgivable and deadly sin, because it is blasphemy against God. For as is well known, blasphemy against God, or even simply against the name of God,

is, according to the divine law, an unforgivable sin and is punished with death, as we read in Leviticus 24:16, which says that whoever blasphemes the name of God must without fail be put to death. So says Scripture in the passage above. In the same way, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, since the Holy Spirit is God equal in honour to Jehovah, is blasphemy against God, punished with eternal death. One may, if he wishes, also compare 1 Kings 21: 10, but according to the Hebrew text,

not according to the translation of the Bible societies. This indeed is why Ananias, when he lied in order to keep back for himself part of the value of the property he had sold, is rebuked by Peter with the following words: Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart, that you should lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land? You have not lied to men, Ananias, but to God. That is, he blasphemed the Holy Spirit, which,

as Peter explicitly says here, is God, and for this he was punished with death, and falling down, as it says, he breathed his last. For this, read Acts 5:3-5. And again, in another place, Christ himself names the Holy Spirit with the names the Paraclete, for example, and the Spirit of Truth, in yet another place, when, a little before his death on the Cross, he entrusts to his disciples his final charges, In order to encourage and comfort them,

because He was going to leave them on their own, He says to them, “I will ask the Father—I will entreat the Father—and He will give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever: the Spirit of truth. ” John 14:16–17. That is, he says that the Holy Spirit is the other Paraclete, just as he himself was the first Paraclete, as John says: we have a Paraclete with the Father, Jesus the Righteous; consequently he is God. And a little further on he adds: But when the Paraclete comes,

whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness concerning me (John 15: 26); and again he says: When he comes, the Spirit of Truth, he will guide you into all the truth (John 16:13). And we must take note, beloved listeners, that although in the Greek language the word for spirit is grammatically neuter, and the syntax requires that the

pronoun standing in its place also be neuter, the Lord used the masculine, he, instead of saying it, which correct syntax would require. And he says: He will teach you all things; he, the Spirit of Truth, will guide you into all the truth; and the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness concerning me. And why all this? In order to teach you that the Holy Spirit is not the active, impersonal force of Almighty God that moves his servants to do his will,

as the Jehovah's Witnesses believe and teach and write in their book Let God Be True, page 108, but is a Person who speaks, who confers, who deliberates and decides together with the Apostles. “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us,” he says in Acts 15:28. He teaches all things, John 14:26. He guides us into all truth; He speaks and declares what is to come, John 16:13. And He bears witness concerning the Son, John 15:26. Just as the passage teaches:

“There are three who bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one,” 1 John 5: 7—a verse which, as they claim, is spurious. More broadly still, Holy Scripture names the Holy Spirit not only the Spirit of Truth, but also assures us that the Spirit is truth, and that he is all-knowing, who searches even the depths of God himself. For this, open to 1 Corinthians 2. And when Scripture says the Spirit is truth, it is the same as saying the Spirit is God,

because God is the truth, as Scripture again teaches us. According to this, then, the words of Christ, whoever is of the truth hears my voice (John 18: 37), are identical with his own words, whoever is of God hears the words of God. John 8:47. Therefore, since Christ said of Himself, “I am the truth,” meaning, “I am God,” so, according to Holy Scripture itself, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are each the truth—that is,

the true God in three Persons, who are of the same essence and equal to one another. And concerning this truth, that is, the true God in Trinity, who is absolute truth, Christ said, as we read in John 8: 32: You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free; so that, according to the teaching of Holy Scripture, the Holy Trinity is undivided and its divinity is one, and there is one who is above all and through all and in us all, as it is written in Ephesians 4:6, and in Romans 9: 5, and Lord of all, Romans 10:12.

This is the Holy Trinity that we Orthodox believe in, because it was this faith that our Lord Jesus Christ himself taught and established. when he sent his disciples into the world with the command: Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, that is, in the name of the Holy Trinity. So if the Son were a creature, as Jehovah's Witnesses claim, and if the Holy Spirit were not God, Christ would never have joined together, in one and the same passage, the name of the Son and of the Holy Spirit alongside the name of the Father;

for placing them side by side in this way signifies precisely equality. He would not have commanded that we be baptized into the name of the Holy Trinity. Nor would Paul have said, 'Now the Lord is that Spirit,' and 'from the Lord, the Spirit,' as we read in Second Corinthians 3:16-18. If, then, the Holy Spirit were not Lord and God, consubstantial with and equal to the Father and the Son, Paul would not have written to the Corinthians: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

From all this, then, my beloved—and especially from the passages of Holy Scripture that we have cited thus far—the divinity of all three Persons of the Holy Trinity is proved from Scripture beyond any doubt. It is also clear that the doctrine of the Triune God is not a human invention or a satanic fabrication, as the Jehovah’s Witnesses teach with the greatest impiety and blasphemy, but the teaching of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ Himself. His disciples preserved this teaching and handed it

down to us through their writings and their oral teaching, so that those who study these matters and take an interest in them may hold the right understanding, both for themselves and in answering those who oppose the faith. I would like to set out a few references to passages that can be looked at in parallel with these subjects. They can look at John 14: 16 and following down to verse 26; at John 15:26; at John 16:7-17;

at Second Thessalonians 2:13-14; at First Peter 1; at the Epistle of Jude, verse 20; at Ephesians 2:18; at First John 1:3; 2:13; 3:23–24; at Mark 8:38; at Matthew 16:27. And these are not the only passages there are that speak about our subject. We are simply giving those who study the Scriptures an occasion to be able to have arguments both for themselves and against their opponents. You will be able to obtain these talks, if you wish,

on cassettes that will be available from the organization offering this program, the Brotherhood 'The Apostle Paul'; and you can ask for information at the telephone number 873-0395. And not only these, but others as well that have to do with the Orthodox faith and, in general, with matters of Orthodox concern, which are so needful in our days; for we live in an age of confusion, and indeed confusion about the very matter of our spotless faith. And once again, rejoice in the Lord!
