You will remember that we were speaking about memorial services, and specifically about the Amomos. We had reached the end of this service and were trying to clarify exactly what it says and what we ourselves must keep in mind, since one day we shall stand before our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ. As I see from my notes, we had reached the third troparion, the evlogitarion, the one that says, "I am the image of Your ineffable glory"; and now let us take up the fourth, in which it says: "Give rest, O God, to Your servant, and appoint him a place in Paradise, where the choirs of the Saints, O Lord, and the righteous will shine forth as lights; give rest to Your servant who has fallen asleep."
Grant him rest, overlooking all his transgressions.
Here, as we said in another stanza during our earlier talks, the hymn acknowledges that there are choirs of virgins, venerable saints, and martyrs, and it makes supplication for His servant. But that depends on the person. Often, unfortunately, it is not true, because the departed person did not want to become a servant of Christ.
He did not become a servant of Christ; he remained a servant of his own ego, of his own beliefs, and of others, but he never became Christ’s servant. Yet he should have become one, because the Church—which receives a person as soon as he is born and sees him on his way when he dies—prays on the understanding that he truly was a servant of Christ. And you know, as I have said before, how this word “servant” should be understood.
Many people want to feel—and imagine themselves to be—somehow free. Yet man is free only up to a point. There is an important distinction here, and I want to discuss it again, because many people stumble over this.
Man is free up to the point of entering into servitude—that is, of choosing a master, as we might say. One person is not free, but is a servant of Satan and his works. The other is not independent either, but is a servant of the Lord—a servant who freely serves the Lord.
There is something remarkable about the servants of the Lord. Such a person is indeed a servant and desires the Lord as his Master, yet he is a free servant who remains near Him voluntarily. The other master, however, tyrannizes his servant; that master is a sadist.
He makes the person suffer and torments him, even driving him to suicide. He offers him no consolation. One master is entirely different from the other. And it is a joy for a person to become a servant of Christ voluntarily.
Paul says, “A servant of Jesus Christ.” What a great thing! James, the Brother of the Lord, writes, “A servant of Jesus Christ.” Jude writes, “A servant of Jesus Christ.” It is no small thing to become a servant of Christ—especially for those who lived in those days and saw Him with their own eyes.
And yet they became His servants, and it is a joy. I once told you a story from the days of the slave trade, when human beings were bought and sold—a story that makes this very clear. It is said that a man once went to the marketplace to buy slaves from a slave trader.
Among the slaves he bought was a very strong, well-built man, for whom he paid a great deal of money. “You will have to pay dearly for this one,” the seller told him. Without any argument, he paid the price. Then he had the slaves unloaded and placed to one side while he attended to his other business.
And then he would take them and set off for his estate. But this big, strong man looked deeply downcast, his head hanging, saying nothing. "What's the matter with you?" he says to him. "Are you sick, maybe? You look low-spirited to me. What's wrong? You're not answering me?"
“Tell me now, while we are still here in the city, so that we can go to a doctor if necessary.” “No,” the man replied, “that is not the reason.” “Then why are you not like the others?”
“I heard how much you paid for me,” he said, “and I understand how much I shall have to endure so that you can recover the price you paid—and make a profit besides, because you did not buy me out of charity.” “Is that why?” the buyer said. “Then listen: I did not buy you in order to keep you as a slave.
I bought you in order to set you free. From this moment on, you are free.” When the man heard that someone had paid so much for him only to set him free, he fell at his feet and said, “I shall always be your servant.”
This is Christ, who shed His blood and freed us from the curse of the Law. And now we owe Him our gratitude: “I shall always be Your servant, willingly.” If we examine this matter, we shall discover that even among those who are called Christians, we are not truly servants of Christ.
Someone may ask, “Why?” A servant does not insist on having his own way. He waits for a command, and it is best for him to say, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”
“Lead me in the way that I should walk.” The servant does nothing on his own without first receiving a command. He does nothing without praying and having tangible assurance that it is the will of God. And he always awaits his instructions from Him.
There would be fewer personal, family, and religious shipwrecks if we were truly servants of Christ. But do we receive commands from Him? No, we do not. We want Christ merely to initial and seal whatever we place before Him.
But we don't want Him reading what we ourselves have written inside. And that is exactly where we part ways with Christ. And so many people end up face to face with themselves. And then they blame God for certain hard things they run into in their lives.
So it is a hard thing today to tell who the servants of Christ really are. In any case, we pray to God, "Give rest, O Lord, to Your servant" — asking that He number him with the choirs of the saints, there in Paradise.
Paradise, where he may find a place—not a place in the spatial sense. As we said earlier, there are Saints among the Saints, not among the wicked or among those who have failed, but among the Saints. Yet how can God number him among the Saints if he did nothing worthy? How can He place him there? Can anyone simply stifle the justice of God? My beloved, God has two things.
It stands on two legs: one here in this world, called mercy, forgiveness, and remission; and the other there, in the world beyond the grave, called justice.
If a person does not willingly choose to set things right here, he will find himself there, entangled in the justice of God. The Lord drew back the curtain and showed us what became of those two men whose lives in this world were so utterly different—the Rich Man and Lazarus. When a person sees their condition beyond the grave, and sees where God’s justice placed the hard-hearted rich man and where it placed the guileless, meek Lazarus, who endured everything patiently, he will understand what awaits him.
We pray, of course, that our departed one truly was a servant of God and is worthy to be numbered among the choirs of the Saints, the venerable ascetics, the virgins, and the martyrs. This is what we pray.
But if he himself did not create the conditions for this, our prayer will have no effect. This concerns his state beyond the grave, and it will have no effect. And the righteous, Scripture says, “shall shine like the stars.” The stars are lights, and in the heavenly firmament there are the sun, the moon, and the stars. The sun is Christ, the moon is the Theotokos, and the stars are the Saints.
If we become saints — that is, pure, because, as we said, "saint" means pure — if we stay pure, if we keep our baptism clean, or, if we have stained it, if we put it right again through the Second Baptism, which is Repentance and Confession — because, as Saint Gregory of Nyssa says, "one tear shed has the same power as the laver of baptism" — then we shall be among the saints, and we too shall be small luminaries, little stars.
How beautifully our Church presents this! She teaches us everything not only through words, but even through what our eyes can see. Hanging from the image of Christ the Pantocrator above, held by three chains, is the great chandelier. What else is that chandelier, with all its little lights? They are the Saints—people who belonged to the Church Militant, who attained their goal and ascended into the Church Triumphant. They are suspended from the Pantocrator, the One who holds all things: from Christ.
So, joy awaits those who will be servants of Christ and who will be ready and pure to be numbered among the Saints, so that they too may shine like luminaries, like stars beside the Moon and the Sun—Christ and the Theotokos (God-bearer). “Give rest to Your servant who has fallen asleep”—not the one who has died, but the one who has fallen asleep. There is profound theology in this. I do not have with me a commentary by John Chrysostom. I had not noticed that this word appeared here. Let me draw your attention to the word “fallen asleep.” He says that it is a word of consolation, because it tells us that this person has fallen asleep; he has not died, but fallen asleep. This is also what Christ said to His disciples concerning Lazarus: “Our friend has fallen asleep.” “Well,” they said, “if he has fallen asleep, he will wake up. Why should we go now?”
“Only yesterday you wanted us to stone you, did you not?”, did you not?” Then He tells them, “He has died.” Ah, he has died. Then let us go, since he has died. They could not understand the distinction between sleep and death.
Satan has wrongly led people to call cemeteries “places of the dead,” so as to erase the mystery of that awakening. Someone who sleeps will awaken one day. It is deliberately called a place of sleep, as a consolation, and the dead person is called one who has fallen asleep: “Give rest to Your servants who have fallen asleep.”
We should look upon the cemetery as an immense sleeping chamber. When the trumpet sounds—the alarm that awakens them—all will rise, whether they want to or not. This is not like one of our alarm clocks, which often rings without our hearing it.
And when we hear, for example, the prayer the priest offers, “Give rest to Your departed servant,” it implies that he has grown weary, for rest is the opposite of weariness. But I ask: do we grow weary laboring for Christ and for our souls? Man is worn out by sin, worn out by his own flesh and corruption. Examine him, and you will see. Few are those who have grown weary from striving in the spiritual struggle.
We must struggle here, where we feel Satan coming directly against us. For the more straightly you advance toward Christ, the more directly you will see Satan coming against you. But we maneuver around him, and that is why we pass through so easily.
You have to push back against him. Instead, we make concessions. I step aside. We don't stand up to him. "I'm not backing down," I tell myself — and then: I'll go along, I make room, I give in, I give way. What's the harm if I trim my hair a little, if I put on a bit of light rouge, if I smoke a cigarette, if I go and see a good film?
These are deviations from the straight path. Just try telling him no—not merely to one of them, but to ten such things. Then you will see what opposition there is, how much effort is required, what means are needed, and what methods must be used, until a person cries out, “When, O Lord, shall I enter Your rest?”
Your rest. That is why it says here, “Give him rest. He is weary.” We, of course, see many poor souls who are sick, and this too is a form of martyrdom. According to the Fathers, if a person endures a long illness as God wills, without grumbling, he receives a martyr’s crown, because every day Satan comes and says to him, “Where is your God? Why does He leave you here to suffer?” So, when there are people like this who truly struggle, we often say...
We often say, “May God grant him rest.” It is a common expression, but at the same time it is theological: may God grant him rest. We are always thinking about his body—his suffering, his pain, his cries, and so on. May God grant him rest.
No—the meaning goes deeper. He must give rest to his soul, to his soul. For once the body is separated from the spirit, it no longer has any needs and no longer suffers. This body is Cain, and whatever Cain suffers, he deserves, because he is a murderer of his brother. Day and night he seeks to put Abel to death—the righteous Abel, the soul—and he often succeeds if we are not watchful.
Pay attention to me. So the Church says of him, “Grant rest to Your servant.” But grant him rest from what? Some die at the racetrack, others at the cabaret, others at the stadium; others die, I do not know where, blaspheming. Some drown at sea; others are killed when they crash into utility poles with their girlfriends. What rest can be given to such a person? From what can he be given rest? He does not enter into rest; his ruin and torments simply continue into eternity, because he did not labor or make any struggle to resist, and so create some room for his soul to find rest. The Church prays, “Grant rest,” but this applies to the faithful—to those who struggled, yet departed with certain sins, whether in word, deed, or thought, for no one is without sin. In the end, there will always be some dust on us. Passing through these coal yards, even if we are not blackened all over, we will at least be spattered. It is for these sins, as we explained above, that the hymn says: “Though he bears the stains of transgressions, have compassion on Your creature, O Master.”
There are people who never even exerted themselves in the struggle. They are therefore not entitled to this rest, this blessed rest—to rest, as the service says, in the bosom of Abraham, as poor Lazarus did, who struggled and suffered so much during his life here.
Therefore, when we hear these things, we should ask, “My God, does this soul whom we are now burying, for whom we have come here to pray and hold a memorial service, have any connection with these realities?” And we should also ask, “Tomorrow, God willing, when these words are being said over my own head—for whether we want it or not, as long as people remain, these words will be said—what then?”
I ask: will the prayers of those people who put on black clothing and come here at some expense truly have any bearing on me? Will they truly help to grant me rest there as well? Are these not necessary thoughts?
If a person understood well—not merely outwardly, but inwardly—the meaning of these words found in the funeral service and the memorial prayers, he would understand everything and would take care to bring his spiritual life to completion.
“Overlook all his offenses”—pass over them and forgive them. But he must be the kind of person described by the divine John Chrysostom in one of his prayers: “We have sinned, O Lord, but we have not forsaken You, nor stretched out our hands to another god.” Yes, we have sinned as human beings; made from earth as we are, we have sinned. But we believe in You; we have not turned to other gods.
Most of us depart from this world without fully believing in Christ—that He is God, that He became man out of love for us so that we might once again become gods by grace, and that whatever He permits, He permits for our own benefit.
Thus the fourth Evlogetarion comes to an end. Then comes a doxastikon that recalls the doctrinal teaching concerning the Holy Trinity, so that we may know to whom we are praying. It says: “Let us devoutly praise the threefold radiance of the one Godhead, crying aloud: Holy are You, the unoriginate Father, the co-unoriginate Son, and the Divine Spirit.” It presents the Divine Spirit as likewise without beginning. In a few words, it speaks of the Godhead, the Godhead in three hypostases, and teaches that the Son and the Holy Spirit are co-unoriginate with the Father.
The Son and the Holy Spirit. “Enlighten us”—You who are the threefold-radiant light of the one Godhead—“enlighten us who worship You in faith, and snatch us from the eternal fire.” Do not let us fall into it. Grant that we may worship You in faith, not merely in words, because faith is shown in deeds. That is true belief.
Even the demons believe that God is three in hypostases. Yet they will still be condemned to Hell. It is not enough merely to remain at the level of faith. There must also be works worthy of that faith. Faith must be working through love. I believe, and because I believe, I am baptized. I believe, and because I believe, I receive Holy Communion. I believe, and because I believe, I go to Holy Confession. I believe, and because I believe, I fast. I believe, and because I believe, I have children, I take a lawful spouse, and so on.
“Because I believe” — I say that because I had a relative, now fallen asleep, who used to blaspheme and didn’t believe in anything. And he says to me: “If I didn’t believe, I wouldn’t blaspheme. Do you take me for such a fool, to blaspheme persons who don’t exist?” Do you see? “No, I do believe in God — that’s why I blaspheme Him; I do believe in Christ — that’s why I blaspheme Him.”
Faith has two sides, like a reversible coat — and on the back side: the devil. Not that kind of faith. A faith that proves itself by works, by behavior, by a person's whole way of life — proof that this person really does believe.
That is why it says: «Enlighten us who worship in faith the Godhead in three hypostases — the one Godhead in three Persons — and snatch us out of the eternal fire.» Yes. Grab hold of us, so that we do not slip away; pull us out of the eternal fire. For man was inside Hades, and Christ went all the way down to the innermost chambers of Hades, in order to bring man up out of there.
So, beloved, we too will look as though we have been snatched from the flames. We should understand this, above all, so that we may be humbled. You have seen fires, haven't you? Often you see objects that have been pulled out and have not burned up; they are scorched and blackened, and you can tell they have come through a fire. They were saved, yet as through fire. Some hand snatched them away at the last moment. Someone else comes out burned and still smoking.
Snatch us away, then. A child rescued from a fire comes out bearing visible burns. If we truly believed this, we would see ourselves as burning in such a fire and would humble ourselves. We would see the hand of Christ reaching in and drawing us out. We would even welcome such spiritual scars upon us, because they would humble us and make us acknowledge that Christ is our Redeemer and that He snatched us away at the very last moment.
Besides the Godhead in three hypostases, our Orthodoxy always places the Most Holy Theotokos immediately after God. She holds the second place, while Christ, of course, holds the first. Christ saves; the Theotokos intercedes.
The Church regards her as a mighty help and never leaves her aside in any prayer. She always brings her before us. So, after proclaiming the dogma of the Godhead in three hypostases and what God does for us, it turns to her.
...does for us. Now he comes to our Most Holy Theotokos and says, “Both now and ever,” and so forth. Then he says: “Rejoice, O pure one, who gave birth to God in the flesh for the salvation of all.” You who gave—who lent—flesh to God, so that He became the salvation of all mankind, are no ordinary person.
You are the unique person through whom the salvation of the world was born. “Through her the human race found salvation”—through this pure maiden, the maiden of Nazareth. The world found salvation through the Incarnation of Christ, through the Christ whom she bore.
Through you we have found Paradise. Through our foremother Eve, what did we find? Hell. Have you noticed where, above all, the Church places our All-Holy Lady, the Panagia? First of all, she has her place in the trimorphon. When we walk into the church, there where the icon of the saint to whom the church is dedicated stands, there ought to be an icon of our Christ as well, with our Panagia on His right and the Honorable Forerunner on His left. That is what is called the trimorphon, the three-figure icon.
In villages and rural districts, these are found even in the principal churches of the region. I confess that I have not seen one here. Perhaps they do exist here, but in any case, it ought to be there. It immediately shows you the place of the Most Holy Theotokos: beside Christ, together with the Honorable Forerunner.
There is also the honored person to whom the church is dedicated. Then, as you move on and finally approach to venerate the icons before receiving Holy Communion, you again see the Most Holy Theotokos at the Lord’s right hand. She intercedes, and Christ saves.
“Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.”
As you move farther into the church, you will see her above the Holy Altar, with her arms opened wide, and above her is written: “She Who Is More Spacious Than the Heavens,” because she contained Him whom nothing can contain. It was not that she grew greater, but that He made Himself small out of love and entered within her; wondrously, she contained the Uncontainable One.
The Orthodox Church has placed her above the Holy Altar because it is from there that the faithful pass into the Kingdom of Heaven. That place once belonged to Eve; but Eve, through disobedience, closed her embrace and shut us outside.
The Most Holy Theotokos says, “Come here. I have opened the door through which you enter. Through Christ, who is beside me, I have opened the Beautiful Gate. Come up here into Paradise, and I will receive you.” Therefore the hymn praises her briefly and places her exactly where she belongs: “Rejoice, O Pure One, who bore God in the flesh for the salvation of all.” You bore the incarnate God and gave Him for everyone, even though not everyone will be saved, because each person must accept Him. A person is not saved merely because God wills it; the person must will it too. Take, for example, the preaching proclaimed to you through John.
Acceptance is required. I hear, I accept, I am saved; I hear, I reject, I am lost. And John, when he preached, forced no one, and Christ, when He preached, forced no one. If they were willing, they believed.
The Apostles did the same, and to this day, wherever the Word of God is preached, no one is compelled. The speaker speaks, the priest speaks, the bishop speaks; if you wish, you listen. Christ descended into Hades and preached there, but He compelled no one.
Those who received Him, He brought to life. “And upon those in the tombs He bestowed life.” Here, then, it says, “for the salvation of all.” Yet not everyone was saved, because they did not desire it. “Through whom the human race found salvation.” Through you, the human race found salvation.
“Through you we found Paradise, O pure and blessed Theotokos.” These are words of prayer and praise addressed to the Godhead in three hypostases and to the Most Holy Theotokos. At this very moment, the soul of the departed hangs in their hands.
That is exactly why he says all these things. "Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to You, O God." "Alleluia" is a Hebrew word, and it means "praise the Lord." Twelve times, that is: "Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to You, O God" — three times four, twelve times.
And then there comes a kontakion, which is in a way a prayer covering the whole matter: "With the saints give rest, O Christ, to the soul of Your servant" — or "of Your handmaid" — "where there is no pain, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting."
And this, once again, depends on how we have lived in this world. Each person will fall asleep according to the preparation he has made, and that is how he will find himself in the world to come. If he has made no preparation, nothing can be done. The priest now takes his place and continues the service; what came before was chanted by the cantors.
Now the priest entreats Christ and says: «With the spirits of the righteous made perfect, give rest, O Savior, to the soul of Your servant.» “Made perfect” — that is, brought to completion. And that word tells us something: beyond the grave there is no repair shop.
That is why a person must take care, here in this life, to acquire the likeness of Christ.
of Christ, communion in Your ineffable glory. Let no one remain indifferent here, waiting until then and relying on the Church to intercede and his loved ones to pray for him. Rather, he must take care here and now to be numbered among those who have been perfected. This is why, as you see, the Church repeats and celebrates all these events in their fullness, makes the same supplication each day, and sets before us the Holy Table, which corrects and transforms us.
He must be changed from a creature ruled by instinct into a spiritual being, from what is common into what is new, and so forth—from the old nature into the new nature. A person must be brought to completion, made perfect. And you should know that no one can ever attain this except through frequent Holy Communion and participation in the life and worship of the Church.
There is no other way. Work on yourself as much as you like; try to correct yourself by your own strength as much as you like. You will not change unless Christ changes you. Christ must enter within and transform the person. Otherwise, a person does not change.
This is something many of us must take seriously: we must have a close relationship with Christ and with His Church, whose entire concern is to bring the soul to completion. And so the prayer asks that this departed person may be numbered “with the spirits of the righteous made perfect.”
"Give rest to the soul of Your servant, O Savior, keeping it safe for the blessed life that is with You, O Lover of mankind." The blessed life is the life lived close to Christ.
Then a short "Glory" is said: "Glory to the Father," and the rest. And it says: "You are our God, who descended into Hades and loosed the pains of those held in bonds; do You Yourself, O Savior, give rest also to the soul of Your servant." Here the hymn confesses one of the properties of our Christ — that He descended into Hades.
Our Christ remained in Hades for those thirty-three hours, from three o’clock on the afternoon of Great Friday until midnight, when the Resurrection began to be celebrated. To understand what happened when He descended there, one should read the troparia of Great Saturday in the Triodion.
There the Church personifies Hades, helping us understand exactly what took place below. And if someone listens carefully to the Lamentations of Great Friday, with their words about Christ descending even into the innermost chambers of Hades, he will see that all of them speak of Christ’s descent into Hades.
So here the Church acknowledges this and says: "You are our God, who descended into Hades." When He went down there, it was not Christ only. It was God; it was not a man. It was the Godhead, the divinity of Jesus, that went down there. God — Christ.
He gave them life. There He shattered the chains of Satan. "Thou art our God, who didst descend into Hades and didst loose the pains of those held in bonds." And it is You who loosed them, who gave them relief — these people whom You set free, these people.
As I told you, the service of Great Saturday says: “Today Hades groans and cries aloud.” Hades groans and cries out today because it received the Son of Mary. It thought it had taken one more ordinary mortal to bind below, but He took all the others away from it as well.
All those whom Hades had taken earlier through the tree of knowledge, Christ has now taken back from him through the tree of the Cross. And Hades groans: "It would have been better for me," he says, "never to have taken the Son of Mary down here. I ache, I am in pain, I am going to vomit them up," he says, "I cannot hold them any longer."
And once again, our Church comes to the aid of those who cannot read.
She does this through icons depicting Christ’s descent into Hades and what He accomplished there. You see the gate of Hades destroyed, its hinges torn away, its locks broken, and so forth. And Christ firmly grasps Adam by the hand, and Eve as well.
You can see Adam’s hand and the pierced hand of our Christ holding Adam and Eve. It is as though He were saying: “You pierced My hand and nailed Me to the Cross, because your own hand was once stretched out where I had commanded you not to stretch it.” Yet despite this, Christ took upon Himself the bonds and led them out.
If someone reads this icon attentively and contemplates the image of Christ’s descent into Hades, he will see that this is our Resurrection and this is where our joy lies. Our joy is not in the image, common among the Italians, of Christ ascending a hillside carrying a banner.
That is nothing. The joy of mankind—the “Christ is risen” that our Church chants—is bound up with Christ’s descent into Hades: “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and granting life to those in the tombs.”
That is the great event: Christ crushed everything below, rendered it powerless, and left Hades unable to hold those who believe in Him. This is why He says, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” He is saying, “I will not abandon the person who bears My Body and Blood within him; he will not remain in Hades.” Read John 6:54 and you will see what I mean. This, then, is what the hymnographer now recalls when he says: “You who descended into Hades and loosed the bonds of those held captive, give rest also, O Savior, to the soul of Your servant.”
It is true that Christ is often grieved by the things we say to Him and by the pressure we try to place upon Him, so to speak. He is grieved, because He turns to us and says, “He has bound My hands. How can I give him rest? He has bound My hands; he himself has bound them.”
How can I give him rest? I want to give him rest. Whom would I want to go to Hades? I do not want anyone to go to Hades, but he does not allow Me. And since I am the One who gave him this freedom, I will not violate it.
If only he had wanted it! But he did not want it — that was his own choice. And he goes on again, and comes round to the part about our Panagia, the Most Holy Theotokos: "the only pure and undefiled Virgin." And that is true — she is the only pure one.
In Saint Gregory the Theologian you will find it said that the Most Holy Theotokos is not pure merely because of her virginity in the narrow sense, as certain men and women flatter themselves into thinking while everything else within them lies desolate and fallen. No! He calls her virgin in speech, virgin in her eyes, virgin in her hearing—virgin in everything. Her virginity was not merely bodily. She possessed virginity in every part of her being.
Saint Gregory says this in a beautiful homily, and I have included this passage in the book we are writing: “The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin.” All these confessions of the Fathers are found there. This is why the hymn says, “O only pure, only pure and spotless Virgin.”
She who ineffably conceived and bore God — a mystery beyond explanation, strange, beautiful, and paradoxical. In what way does a woman give birth to God? How can such a thing happen? Intercede that the soul of your servant may be saved. Intercede with Christ, whom you bore — not with God. I say this as an aside, for the Jehovah's Witnesses and for the Protestants, who reject for us the intercessions of the Theotokos and want Christ alone.
Christ intercedes with God the Father, my brother. The Most Holy Theotokos intercedes with Christ. This violates neither the Gospel nor the proper order. Between God and mankind, Christ is the Mediator. Between Christ and mankind, the Most Holy Theotokos is an intercessor.
This does not contradict the Gospel. Do not be deceived.
Intercede that the soul of your servant may be saved. Then there are beautiful prayers offered through the deacon, who says: “Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your great mercy”—not according to our righteousness—“we pray You, hear us and have mercy.” Hear us and have mercy on us.
And the other day I told you what it means for God to hear us. It is a hearing in return for a hearing: you listen to Him so that He will listen to you. If you don't listen to Him, if you don't obey what the Gospel says, then He doesn't hear you, no matter how loudly you cry out.
“Again we pray,” it says, “for the eternal memory and blessed repose of the soul of the departed servant of God, so-and-so,” and so forth, “that every transgression, both voluntary and involuntary, may be forgiven him.” You know that, for the most part, we confess the sins we remember committing.
But we have also committed other sins that we do not remember. This is precisely why I remind you, when you make your confession, to say to the priest: “Father, I ask Christ to forgive me also for anything I have done without knowing it or without remembering it.”
Sin is not limited to the sin we commit: I stole, I fornicated, I committed adultery, I wronged someone.
...to show that whatever good we could have done but did not do is also sin. “To him who is able to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” For example, we might have stepped forward for someone, helped someone, stopped someone’s tears, or paid someone’s debt—things we could have done but did not do. That is sin. And let us not forget: at that hour, these things will be set before us. That is why I say here...
Thank you.
You threw down a banana peel; later someone passed by, stepped on it, fell, and broke his head. You will answer for it, because you left the banana peel there. There are countless cases like this. You spoke frivolously and told an improper joke; a young boy or girl heard it and then wanted to discover in practice what you had been talking about.
You will answer for that. Do you know how many such things there are? There are many. This is why the Church, knowing through the Holy Spirit, says: whether voluntary or involuntary, whether done knowingly or in ignorance, I beseech You, forgive them. And it is good for these things to be dealt with here, in this life, rather than waiting until beyond the grave.
And it goes on to say: "That the Lord God may establish his soul where the righteous repose. The mercies of God" — not the justice of men — "the Kingdom of Heaven and the forgiveness of his sins, let us ask of Christ, our immortal King and God." It is Christ who forgives sins. It is not Jehovah — it is Christ.
"All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth." And that is why the Orthodox priest, when he hears confession and reads the prayer of forgiveness, says: "You, Lord, who said, 'Whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven, and whatever you bind shall be bound' — loose this your servant also."
Christ is the one — and let us take this seriously — Christ is the one who acts through the priest of the Church. Then there is a prayer that the priest says, and it goes like this: “O God of spirits and of all flesh.”
“Who hast trampled down the devil and abolished death.” Christ abolished death. Yet we willingly go back to Hell. That is why many people are scandalized when they hear preachers speak about Hell.
People want a God who is good; they want a God who has paradise. But God has hell as well. Only, He doesn't have hell for man — He has it for Satan. "The eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." So He made hell for Satan. But man does nothing worthy of staying out of hell. And so, having no other place to put him, God will send him off with the one who is in that other place.
This is what the prayer tells us here: He abolished death. Yet I behave as though death had not been abolished. If you look at this icon of the Descent into Hades, Saint John Chrysostom says, “See how much effort it would take.”
Now just try to find a way to put those doors back up, to fit the hinges again, to put on the locks, to get inside and shut yourself in. Well, he says, if you go to all that trouble just to get into hell, then you're welcome to it — you've earned it.
God, he says, has torn all of that apart; he has wrecked those things. Saint John Chrysostom interprets this image in one of his homilies, and he says, then, that Christ trampled the devil underfoot. And what is the way he trampled him underfoot? Apply here what he said in Genesis; at Golgotha the devil is the one who took the damage.
Satan pierced Christ’s flesh with nails, and Christ crushed his head.
This is what God said to him in Genesis 3:15: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall crush your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” You, Satan, He says, will bite the heel of the woman’s seed.
The seed of the woman, that is, is Christ — because He was not born of seed. A woman has no seed; it is the man who has seed. He is from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. «And He shall crush your head.» And this, of course, was something Satan could not see.
He saw only that he would raise Christ upon the Cross. But behind the Cross stood the Resurrection, and this he could not see. He did not foresee the trampling that would take place when Christ descended below. It is what I told you earlier today: Hades groans in anguish.
That is why, at Pascha, when Christ rises, our priests go outside—as I have told you before—with a cross in one hand. On the back of it is an image of the Resurrection, tied with a red ribbon. Some put the image on the front, poor things, because they do not understand.
And what does this show? The devil could see only as far as the Cross, where he thought he would put Christ out of the way. He could not see the Resurrection behind it, and that is where he was defeated. So when Christ was raised upon the Cross and the devil saw the signs and all that followed, he cried, “Come down, come down!” “Yes, now I am descending from here, where you raised Me up.”
We will settle this down below. “Let us take Him down.” Then the devil realized that he had been defeated. But by then it was too late; nothing could be changed. That is why it says here: “He who trampled down the devil, abolished death, and bestowed life upon the world.”
“Bestowed.” Life is a gift. Can eternal life be purchased by our filthy deeds? We do one good thing and announce it to everyone, while making the other person pay dearly for it. Or we present it as payment, as though we had earned Paradise. No. It is a gift, freely given—“bestowed.” “Do Thou Thyself, O Lord, give rest to the soul of Thy departed servant in a place of light,” not far away in darkness; “in a place of green pasture,” meaning that there is spiritual refreshment—do not imagine physical dampness; “in a place of repose,” where he may rejoice; “whence all pain, sorrow, and sighing have fled away.”
Far from all these things, may he find rest; may he repose in Your place of rest. “Forgive every sin he has committed, whether in word, deed, or thought.” For some people are of the opinion, “I did nothing wrong.” But did you not even think anything sinful? Did you not say anything sinful?
The tongue goes off like a machine gun once the fighting starts, and then in the evening we say we haven't sinned. We do sin. We are human beings. So then: whether in word, or in deed, or in thought, as a good God who loves mankind, forgive; for there is no one who lives and does not sin. Name me a single person. Name me Abraham. Name anyone you like. Every one of them lived. We bring this up as an argument; we are putting a bit of pressure on God, almost blackmailing Him with it: For You alone are without sin.
And Saint Mark the Ascetic puts this beautifully as well. He says: «By works and righteousness, only one man is righteous; but by repentance and confession, many are righteous.» Only One can boast of that, and He was the one who said: «Which of you convicts Me of sin?» We cannot say a thing like that about ourselves.
This, then, is what the prayer says to Him here: “For Thou alone art without sin. Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Thy word is truth.” It cannot be otherwise. Whatever Thou hast said is true; Thy promises are true, and Thou wilt fulfill them.
"For You are the Resurrection" — You are the one who will raise us up. "The Life and the Repose" — You will give rest to Your servant who has fallen asleep, O Christ our God; and to You we send up glory, together with Your Father who is without beginning, and Your all-holy and good and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
This is where the service ends, and the dismissal is given. But everything I have read to you and everything we have interpreted in these six talks comes from the memorial service. God willing, we shall next speak about the funeral service.
There, too, we find essential doctrinal and moral teachings. We should know them, whether we attend the funerals of others or wish to understand what will happen to us when we have departed from this world.
Θα πρέπει να πας κόντρα. Κάνουμε αβαρίες. Μεριάζομαι. Δεν του κάνουμε κόντρα. Δεν κάνω πίσω. Εγώ θα πάω, μερίζομαι, ενδίδομαι, υποκύπτω. Τι χάνει αν κόψω λίγο το μαλλί μου, αν βάλω λίγο ανοιχτό ρουζ, αν καπνίσω ένα τσιγάρο, αν πάω να δω ένα καλό έργο;
Λέγω, θα έχει σχέση πράγματι η ευχή των ανθρώπων αυτών που θα φορέσουν τα μαύρα και θα έρθουν να κάνουν έξοδα εδώ; Πράγματι θα έχει καμιά σχέση να με αναπαύσει και εμένα εκεί; Δεν είναι σκέψεις απαραίτητες;
Μακριά από αυτά τα πράγματα, να ξεκουραστεί, να αναπαυτεί στην κατάπαυσή σου. «Παν αμάρτημα το παρ’ αυτού πραχθέν, εν λόγω ή έργω ή διανοία, συγχώρησον». Διότι ορισμένοι έχουν τη γνώμη ότι «δεν έκανα τίποτα». Ούτε σκέφτηκες τίποτα; Ούτε είπες τίποτα;
