Tonight I have several questions to answer. They are connected with what we discussed on the other evenings, as well as with a few related matters.
In fact, as I see here in my notes, the first question is related to what I was saying earlier in answer to that brother: “Do not be hasty.”
It is true that many people are easily led astray. A person must examine every matter thoroughly before taking a position.
In Genesis, chapter 18, verse 21, there is a passage that greatly helps us with this question.
You remember that God was about to burn Sodom and Gomorrah because of the sin of sexual relations between men, of attraction contrary to nature. This was the great sin at that time, and today it continues to ravage the whole world.
It seemed so strange even to God, if one may speak in such a way. It was as though He found it unbelievable that such a thing could exist.
The outcry reached heaven, and He said: “I will go down and see whether they are acting according to the outcry that has reached Me.” In other words: “I will go and see for Myself, close at hand, whether this is really happening. I cannot believe My ears; I cannot believe what I see and perceive. I will go Myself to see whether the things being reported are truly taking place.” This has great significance...
A great lesson: “Believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear.” There are stories so skillfully fashioned and passed from mouth to mouth, without any basis or point of origin, that they acquire tremendous force. A Thomas says, “No, I do not believe what people are saying. I will go and see for myself. How can I believe so easily merely because someone told me this?”
“This person told me so, and then someone else told me. I heard it from over there; another man said it from the pulpit; someone else said it elsewhere.” What does this mean? It tells us that we must be extremely guarded in such matters.
I remember an incident that I have mentioned to you before. I do not want to tell you who the person was, because it would shock you. If I named the man who related it, the man to whom it happened, you would be shocked.
He kept accusing a bishop from the pulpit of being a fornicator. And things were arranged by God's providence at a monastery, one evening when the two of them were both being given hospitality there. As it happened, the bishop died suddenly of heart failure. And they prepared his body for burial, as was only natural, and the accuser himself was there as well, and he saw that the bishop had been a virgin.
We must be especially careful in religious matters, particularly in anything concerning the clergy. The clergy are the bridge by which a person goes to Christ and, through Christ, is led to God. A person cannot go to Christ without the clergy.
And he cannot go to God without Christ. Christ stands between God and men, while the clergy stand between men and Christ. And this happens only through the clergy. They baptize, they crown couples in marriage, they sanctify, they hear confessions, they give Communion, they do everything. The clergy will do it, whether they are worthy or unworthy. And so a person comes to Christ, and from there, through Him, he goes to God the Father. "No one comes to the Father except through Me," says Christ. And no one comes to Christ except through the clergy. This is the path. That is why Satan, knowing what…
If a man is an Orthodox clergyman, even a sinful one, he comes under attack. And a person should always stop and think about whether he ought to open his mouth at all — especially when he can see that God himself, the One who has authority over that clergyman, is still bearing with him.
He wants him, he has him—what do I know? I understand. Here He says, “I will go down and see whether their deeds are truly as the outcry against them declares.” “I cannot believe my ears; I cannot believe it.” Of course, He is speaking in human terms. “I do not believe it; I will go down Myself and see.”
If I don't see it, I don't believe it. A regular Thomas — if he hadn't seen it, he wouldn't have believed it. And then there's us, we who are finite, who speak the way we were told, the way we heard it. Because many times, if you take a close look at people who officially take a stand and accuse and denounce things and so on — see whether they know anything at all from their own firsthand knowledge: they know nothing.
And if you trace the story further and further back, you may discover that the truth is completely the opposite. We must therefore be careful, because one day all these things will be entered into our account. Recently, I was reading a kind of prescription for how a person ought to think.
The first thing it says a person must guard, if he wishes to be saved, is his tongue. He must close his mouth and speak against no one, whether that person is good or bad. It places this first.
That made a deep impression on me, and I want to read it again and absorb it. I want to see how the author sets out the matter and why he begins there. It is almost as though the greatest deadly sin in the eyes of God is for a person to judge and condemn others, occupying himself with their affairs when he has so many concerns of his own to attend to.
That was the next matter in order, and, as you can see, I dealt with it briefly, together with the other one, responding on the spot with what I read to you. We are also asked for an opinion on the following issue. It has been put roughly like this: What do you say about children who do not want their parents?
The truth is that these children have not thought the matter through very carefully. And the painful irony is this: children would never treat their parents as, unfortunately, many treat them today if they remembered that they too will one day grow old.
And there is every possibility that they too will receive the same treatment, because a person is often repaid in the same coin.
Unfortunately, we forget that we too may grow old, and that we will lie in the bed we have made. We would not want our children to do to us what we are doing to our own parents today. Sadly, many daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, and children never think of this.
Here we reflect on this. Yet they should know that the Holy Spirit has already spoken about this through the Wisdom of Sirach, in Ecclesiasticus, chapter 3, verse 15: “A father’s dishonor is a disgrace to his children.”
Anyone who does not glorify his father, who pays him no attention — reproach comes upon him. Shame, disgrace, utter disgrace on that child who does not honour his father. "Dishonour of a father" — that is, you look down on your father — "is the reproach of the children." The Wisdom of Sirach, through the book also called Ecclesiasticus, says this in advance, at 3:11.
15. On another occasion, speaking about this, I told the following story. A son was swayed by his wife, who could no longer bear the discharge coming from his father’s nose and mouth. She said to him, “Either you send him away, or I will leave.” Under pressure, the man gave in and sent his father away. It was summer, and he sent him across the way, to an open square.
They would send him to live in a cave and bring him food there. “And I will consider,” the lady said, “whether I shall let him return in the winter. For now, however, he can go there and get some fresh air.”
And so the son spoke to his father. Being considerate and noble-hearted, the father raised no objection. “Yes, my child, I will go. You stay here and live happily with your wife.”
They told their little boy to take an old blanket over there, so that his grandfather would have something to use.
So they went. But the little boy had also brought a pair of scissors with him.
And a pair of scissors. And when they got there, the boy unfolds the rag rug and says to his grandfather, "Hold this end, Grandpa," and he starts cutting it right down the middle. The grandfather protested. "My boy," he says to him, "why are you doing this to me? Couldn't you at least leave it whole, so I can put half of it under me and half of it over me? As it is, it's barely enough to cover me." "I want it, Grandpa," the boy says. "Never you mind, I want it." And what was the grandfather going to say to a little kid? So the grandfather takes half the rug and the boy takes the other half, and he headed back home. His father saw him come back. "Well?" he says. "Did you go?" "Yes."
“What is this? Why did you not leave the whole blanket there?” the father asked. “I left half of it,” the boy replied. “Why did you leave only half for your grandfather? What do you want the other half for?” “I am keeping it so that, when you grow old, I can send you there with this half,” the little boy said. The father was stunned. He immediately went to bring the grandfather back.
And so he invited the grandfather back into the house. Of course, some people now try to justify themselves, claiming that they may have valid reasons for sending elderly people away.
One person, speaking about this, says, “They have lost their minds. They have lost their minds.” In other words, they are no longer mentally sound. Perhaps they have suffered some injury to the head, or some illness, or whatever it may be. In any case, now they have lost their minds.
But how do you know? Won't you lose yours too? Oh, of course — you'll always have all your wits about you, right! So what do we do with these people, then? We should just toss them in a nursing home, is that it! You know, a father and a mother don't need so much food, and they don't need a doctor so much.
Their greatest physician and their finest food are the sight of their own child and grandchild. Do you understand that? They would rather go hungry, if only they could see them. Do you not know this? Have you never known an elderly person? If this is how you think, I pray that you never grow old.
Sending the people who brought you into being to a nursing home, merely so that a doctor will be nearby, is no solution. Better that they die tonight beside you, within your home, so that you too may receive the blessing. Those who show such hardness toward their parents lose a great deal.
Yet the wise Sirach, again in chapter 3, verse 15, gives this counsel for such difficult cases: “Even if he loses his understanding, be forgiving toward him.” Even if his mind is no longer sound, forgive him.
For he is not responsible. And take care: Christ is the craftsman. He can very easily take a little screwdriver and turn your own mind slightly, and then they will be taking you away for treatment. Very easily indeed. No one has guaranteed that you will always remain perfectly sound. And do not be deceived: Satan does not grow old.
You must bear your cross, and this is a precious cross. It is no ordinary cross, but a precious one: to have the head of the household there with you, your father or your mother, and to have the work of caring for them.
One day, I heard a woman say to me over the telephone, “I am confined to the house, Mr. Panagopoulos. I cannot go anywhere. I do not mean going out dancing or going out for pleasure, but I would like to visit a hospital, to go somewhere and help as well.”
But the hospital, then, is in your own home. Her husband was ill; he had suffered partial paralysis, and she was confined to the house caring for him. She wanted to go and serve in a hospital, but God had brought the sick man right into her home.
You do not need to go as far as the bus stop, get soaked in the rain, or suffer in the heat. The sick person is there in your home; the hospital is within your home. Will you then leave your own coffin unattended and go to carry someone else’s?
What are these things you are telling me? And sadly, many people never stop to think about them. Yes, nursing homes should be closed. They are a disgrace—a disgrace both to Christianity and to the whole world.
A disgrace. In exceptional cases, in very few cases, there should be a nursing home. Otherwise it should be our homes that take them in. But our homes, it seems, are for the cats, they're for the dogs, they're for the girls' boyfriends and the boys' girlfriends. Everyone has a room of their own, except the father and the mother. The father and the mother don't have one. The daughter has her own room so she can have people over. The son has his own room so he can have people over. The father and the mother have no room; they're not entitled to one.
Then there is the foolishness that strikes some elderly people: they sign everything over in advance to their daughters-in-law, their sons, and so forth, and afterward they are thrown out. That is their own responsibility, and they must be careful about it.
I have something to say about this. Once, some children were pressuring their parents to sign everything over to them. “We will take care of you. Why should you worry?” It was springtime. “Will you allow me to give you my answer in a few days?” the father said. He was an elderly father, white-haired and seasoned in every sense of the word, a man of experience.
Beneath the balcony of the house was a swallow’s nest. He took the little swallows, the young birds, and placed them in a cage. Their mother and father fluttered and chirped outside the cage, calling to them continually.
They found the opening—he had left the cage door open—and they would go inside and feed them.
The young birds grew up.
The little birds became accustomed to it. They still had not flown, and the adult birds would also go inside. Once the adults saw, of course, that it was not a trap, they cared for the young there. The father calculated how many days it would be before the young could fly. Then, one morning, he went and shut the two adult birds inside, leaving the young ones outside. The young birds flew here and there, and so on. Yet not one of them came to feed the adults. At the same time, he was teaching his son a lesson. “Why are you doing this, Father?” “I’ll tell you in fifteen days.” So, when he had shut the adults inside and the young birds did not go to feed them, he said, “What do you see now, my son?” “Well, I see,” he replied. “Before,” the father said, “the adult birds fed the young. But now the young do not feed the adults, even though six or seven of them have come.” “This,” he said, “is what awaits me when I grow old in your care. This is what I fear: when I grow old, although I have fed you all these years, if you shut me away inside...”
"So you won't be feeding me? You'll just go about your own business. Well then, I'm not signing the property over to you." We aren't careful enough. We tear our hair out afterwards. We repent afterwards, when it's already too late. We don't go and take counsel with people who have discernment.
We do not bend our knees and implore God: “Should I do this? Should I sign this document, or should I not?” It is a great disgrace, especially for those who call themselves Christians and hold a candle at the service of the Resurrection,
and who have parents, and yet they will pack them off to a nursing home. So my answer on this question comes down like a hammer: a dreadful account will have to be given to God for it, no matter what sort of man your father is. If he is a heretic, if he is drawing you into heresy, if your faith itself is in danger, then you are permitted to leave your father.
Otherwise, honor your father and your mother.
Sometimes a ladder may become the means of saving you from a fire, a persecution, or some other danger. You would never want that ladder to be lost. You would always want it there to remind you: “This is the ladder that once saved me, and it is still here today.”
You owe your very existence to those two bodies, to those two people. Implore God to give you the strength to keep your parents-in-law with you, to keep your own parents with you, and, if possible, to care for others as well.
Read the Life of Saint Basil the Great. Read the Life of Saint John the Almsgiver. Read and see how they secretly cared for elderly people. They washed their undershirts and their undergarments, though they themselves were bishops of the highest rank.
They considered this a great and noble work. How much more, then, should we do the same? Besides, how can you say that you are the clever one and she is the foolish one?
It is foolish. It flatters you to say, “I come from such foolish parents, and yet I turned out to be the star!” You call them all sorts of things and say, “I cannot accept them.” But these are the people you come from. So this, too, counts against you. If you say it and put it forward as an argument, it is nothing but an excuse.
Thank you.
It is not right. Forgive me, but that is my opinion. I am expressing an opinion; I am not laying down the law. I am neither a Synod nor our Lord Jesus Christ.
Am I Jesus Christ? I am only a man. If what I have said seems right to you, keep something from it. If it does not seem right to you, do not keep it.
Here is another strange matter. “What do you say, Mr. Panagopoulos, about a custom that prevails in certain parts of our country?”
...where, as soon as a couple have given their word to marry, they immediately begin sleeping together. If you look at a book I wrote on repentance and confession, you will see that I addressed this matter long ago, some twelve or thirteen years earlier, because I once found myself out in Boeotia and came across just such a situation.
A couple becomes engaged; a pledge is given: “Yes, we will give you our daughter, and you will give us your son.” Then, that very evening, the daughter leaves her home, goes to the bridegroom’s house, and stays there.
You understand what lies behind this, what may happen, and what kind of Holy Matrimony can follow afterward.
Then again, it is true that they live for one, two, three, even five years without being crowned in Holy Matrimony. In the meantime they conceive children, whom they kill before they ever see the light of day. Then the priest comes to issue a marriage license, and they come to hear the words, “Crown them with glory and honor.” Do you understand what a mockery this makes of the Mystery, and indeed of the entire service of Holy Matrimony, which bears no relation at all to the reality of their lives?
Representations were made about these matters to the Synod, to the bishop of that region, and more specifically to the clergy there. And, as I have been informed, this custom was curtailed to some extent.
There was another custom there as well: the girls did not go to Church. I happened to be in that region around the feast of Saint Spyridon, and the entire women’s gallery was empty. There were no girls in the Church.
Girls who went to Church were considered dishonorable.
Just imagine finding yourselves faced with customs like these in the middle of the twentieth century, while still calling ourselves Christians. So, as much as God allowed during the two or three days we stayed there, we gave some catechetical instruction on the matter. And I am glad to tell you that the girls came to Church.
The priests in the village knew that this woman and that man were living together as husband and wife, and then the next day they would come to be crowned in marriage: “Crown them with glory and honor.” That is what is so grievous, so very grievous.
These matters must be properly explained to the people.
Consider this: Saint Basil the Great says that if a girl becomes engaged and is kissed by her betrothed, she should be given a canon, a rule of repentance, because such a kiss amounts to half an act of fornication.
The young woman must come to her wedding as a bride wholly undefiled, and so must the bridegroom.
She should be in the state expressed by our Most Holy Theotokos when the angel spoke to her: “Behold, I am like a blank piece of wood. Write upon me whatever You will. I am pure. Mark me and fashion me as You will. I belong to You alone, my Creator. I am ready.” For a woman, too, is meant for her husband, for some Adam whom God knows.
Likewise, the husband, the man, must remain chaste for some Eve. Men have no right to be dishonorable while demanding that women and young ladies remain honorable. We must require chastity from both, must we not?
Look at where things have come today. A few months ago, a bridegroom sent a young woman back to her father because he found that she was still chaste. That sounds strange to you, does it not? I repeat: a few months ago, a young woman was sent back to her father because the bridegroom found her chaste.
This is the age we now live in, do you understand? Everything has been turned upside down. They say, “You cannot be a real woman if you have remained chaste until the age of twenty-two.”
Do you understand what perversion this is?
So this is not right. And the evil is that it has become established as a custom; under the cover of custom, it is treated as though it had a blessing, and the whole thing continues. It is not considered wrong, since the couple have pledged themselves to one another. But if that engagement is broken tomorrow, why should the woman be left dishonored?
And even if the engagement is not broken, suppose the man is away serving as a soldier for one, two, three, or four years, and she conceives once, twice, or three times and kills that many children. How will you later establish your little home with God’s blessing after your wedding?
How can such a thing be done?
Do you remember what I once told you when I was speaking in Kypseli? A woman waited outside, met me in the street, and said, “Mr. Panagopoulos, if things are as you say, must a person go to Confession?” “Of course,” I replied. “If a person sins, he must confess.” “But the way you put it...” “What I am saying is that when a person sins, he absolutely must confess, if he sins. If you have not soiled yourself, what is there to confess? Do you understand me? If a person sins, he must confess. If, with God’s help, he does not sin, then he has nothing to confess.”
“But the way you put it...” “Get behind me, Satan,” I said to myself. “What is this feeling now? Why are you asking me?” What is it that grips you inwardly? Something within you is convicting you. Tell me, right here at the crossroads in Kypseli—what is it?
“Nothing. It is only the way you put it.”
“How long has it been since you went to Confession?” I asked. “A long time.” “How long?” “A long time.” “Are you married?” “Yes, I am married.” “Where are you from?” “From the region of Livadeia.” “Were you a virgin when you married, or had you lived immorally? What are you telling me? Answer the question I am asking you.” Something was ready there, whether from God or from the devil, I do not know. No, it was from the devil.
I opened my bag, took out a book about metanoia and confession, and gave it to her. “Read this. You know where to find me, if you wish to come.” Then I left.
There you have one such case. Two years later, I learned that she went to confession with three full pages of sins written down.
She had written down that whole life of hers, all its corruption and everything else. This, then, is not right. It may be a custom, but it is immoral. It is a custom imposed by Satan, and it has taken hold. The Church has not done as much as it should to enlighten people about this matter.
And in certain places it still happens, although it has been greatly curtailed. Since we have raised this subject, allow me to tell you about another, similar custom.
Up there in Thrace, around Serres, Komotini, Thasos, and other such places, something else occurs. A woman’s husband dies, and the widow may then go to another man’s house. That man keeps her there for one year, two years, three years, five years, and they may even have children together.
If in the end he wants to marry her, he does. If he does not want to marry her, he does not.
What would you call that?
So it is not only the custom I mentioned before. There is also this one I am telling you about.
Think what it means for a widow of twenty, twenty-two, or twenty-five years of age to be taken by another man, to take her little children and go to live with him for one, two, three, or five years, right there in the same village, living with him outside Holy Matrimony and bearing his children.
“Ah, but she has not been crowned in marriage. It is the custom,” they say. What kind of custom is that? If she cannot exercise self-control, she may marry, but only in the Lord. The Apostle Paul says this in the seventh chapter of First Corinthians: “To the unmarried and the widows, I say that they should not marry. But if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry, only in the Lord.”
They should not live in unlawful unions and be passed from one person to another. Let the woman take a husband. Where did you find such a custom? Can custom abolish the Gospel or set aside the law of God? Does it tell the widow to become a prostitute, to become the concubine of one man and then another? Does it say that a man may commit fornication with a widow?
Does it say that a man may commit fornication with a widow? Who has ever heard of such a thing? What priest could hear this without his hair standing on end? What bishop could hear of it and not excommunicate those involved? What else is he to do? The people have not been enlightened about this matter.
Therefore, help them in every way you can, to the full extent of your ability. The people do not understand these matters. They are tormented and suffer under certain perverse customs, even here in this world, because when a person lives in sin, he cannot have God’s blessing.
And it is not only this custom here in Attica. We have other such cases within Greece. Perhaps they are not limited to these two that have come to my attention; there may be others of which I know nothing.
These are the matters I see before us this evening. So let us pray that God will enlighten the people and deliver them from the hands of Satan. For Satan has taken hold in this way and is gaining ground on many fronts, even in places where no one suspects him.
But the divine Chrysostom says: where a custom is good, let it remain. Where a custom is bad, let it be torn out by the roots, and let a new and good one be put in its place.
That is all on this subject. The next question is this:
“Mr. Panagopoulos, how do we know that at the time of death the soul does not die together with the body?”
Of course, that is the theology of the Jehovah's Witnesses. But I am not going to say much about it. I will give only one verse, the one our Christ spoke: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.”
What surer or more authoritative testimony could you want than the words of Christ? Do not be afraid if they kill the body; they cannot kill your soul, they cannot put it to death. Therefore, the soul remains alive. Do whatever you will to the body, even cut it into pieces; the soul, being spirit, will continue to exist.
And is that the only proof? There are a thousand and one other cases that prove the soul exists. Just look at the examples: Samuel was called up, and he appeared. Where was his soul? It was somewhere, and it came. "Child, arise." "Lazarus, come forth." So then, souls do exist.
And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised on the day of Christ’s Crucifixion. Where had their souls been? Clearly, then, souls continue to exist. So let us not be deceived. Now let us move on to another question: If someone possesses wealth, how should we regard him?
Does his wealth come from God or not? Many people are preoccupied with wealth and condemn everyone who has money as destined for Hell.
So what people fuss over is how a person came by that money. Now, the answer here is a double one. As we were saying, it has two sides. If they have it from their own sweat, if they have it from their own labors, if they have it out of their own want, going without themselves, that little bit of capital there, then it turns out that they have it according to God. Not from God, but according to God: that is, in a way that accords with God's will. A person works and takes home four thousand a week. Right? And then over the weekend they want to spend eight thousand. Naturally it will never be enough for them to put even a dime aside. Then there's the other person: they earn four thousand, they spend one thousand, and the other three they put aside.
In time, that man will accumulate a modest sum. To someone who has nothing, he will seem rich. And if he goes back to his village and builds himself a one-room house, people will call him rich, part of the bourgeoisie. He will be the first one they attack, because he is considered a man with money.
He went off to America and washed a billion dishes over there, and he brought back two or three thousand dollars. "Oh, he's rich, he's an American, gold chains and all the rest — he's rich. Down with him!" But come on now — that man washed every dish in America, he laid all the railway lines over there, he worked five thousand meters down inside the earth, just to scrape together a few pennies and bring them back here.
He may have lived there for ten, twenty, thirty, fifty, or even a hundred years before bringing those savings home.
If, then, the money comes from honest sweat, not from theft, fraud, injustice, or scheming, it has been acquired in accordance with God’s will. Such wealth is blessed. But if it was acquired in the opposite way, through schemes, fraud, forgery, injustice, theft, and the countless other means we know so well, then it is not blessed.
A person may steal with dishonest scales, with his tongue, or with his hand, and so forth. That money is the fruit of injustice. I cannot know exactly how someone acquired his wealth. God knows, and the man who acquired it knows.
I cannot know. What will he do? We return quickly to what we said at the beginning: I do not judge him. If his wealth was dishonestly acquired, he will answer for it one day. If it was honestly acquired, God will vindicate him. It is not my task to sit in judgment over him, asking what he did and how he did it. I have no way of uncovering the whole story.
The further question, then, is this: Does a man receive a heavenly reward if he gives alms from money he acquired through evil means?
The gambler wants to give. That is, we have many such people who give from what they have stolen, from what they have acquired unjustly. Indeed, we even see their names inscribed at institutions as great benefactors. Yet that money is the sweat and blood of other people—the workers, and so on. So, does such a person receive a reward? He receives no reward at all. Anyone who does good with what belongs to others, with ill-gotten or stolen wealth, receives no reward, because, as the Fathers say...
What do the Fathers say? "He farms what belongs to others; he cultivates what is not his own." It is not his. "He farms what belongs to others." That is what Saint Gregory of Nyssa says. It is the evil one who hears this man's voice, and not God. What this man does with what belongs to others, with what is stolen, with what is taken unjustly — the evil one hears it. God does not hear it, so as to reward him for what he is doing.
But if he receives no reward from this, as is plainly evident, why does the Lord say in the Holy Gospel, “Make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous mammon”? Many people ask this question, and for many this passage remains unresolved.
Indeed, only a few days ago, two people telephoned me on the very same day and asked me about this passage. What is its meaning?
Listen, then, to the interpretation of this passage.
Mammon does not mean wealth acquired through injustice and greed, as some people suppose. It simply means the surplus left from wealth honestly acquired. You receive ten thousand drachmas, but five thousand are enough to meet your needs.
The five thousand drachmas that you keep hidden away—this is what is called the mammon of unrighteousness. Now someone will say, “But do I not have the right to put something aside?” You do. If you have daughters, you have the right to put something aside. If you are facing old age and have nothing else, you have the right to put something aside.
In this way, you show mercy to yourself, to your daughter, or to someone else for whom you are responsible. You have that right. What else are you to do? You may even put aside enough to cover your funeral expenses.
God wills this. But some people possess far more than they need for any of these purposes.
When another person is in need, those excess possessions should be brought out and used to help him. If you leave them stored away, they become unrighteous mammon. I will explain this as John Chrysostom explains it, so that you will know the interpretation is not my own.
Mammon does not mean wealth acquired through injustice and greed. It simply means the surplus of honestly acquired wealth which, when it is stored away instead of being given to those in need, is called the mammon of unrighteousness.
It is this mammon that the Lord speaks about, not wealth gathered by evil means. Listen to John Chrysostom: “No, the mammon from which the Lord told us to make friends among the poor is not, as some suppose, wealth amassed through injustice and greed. It is wealth laid aside beyond what is needed.” It is whatever remains beyond our needs and which we hide away and keep.
There are people who own considerable property and receive ten, twenty, thirty, or fifty thousand drachmas in rent. They need ten or twenty thousand, but they hide away the other thirty. They have no daughter to marry off, no one to support, no school fees to pay, or anything of that kind.
That is called the mammon of unrighteousness. Then someone comes and pleads, “Please, I need five thousand; please, I need ten thousand,” but you harden your heart and refuse to give it. That is the evil. It is not evil to acquire money, to work longer hours or overtime, to earn more, to eat and spend less, and to put something aside for a particular purpose.
If it is set aside for some purpose—if that sum of money has a specific destination—then it is blessed by God. But whatever is left over, whatever can be given away beyond what you need, is called the mammon of unrighteousness. That is the idea here. Now the question continues: What must someone do to be saved if he acquired his wealth by evil means? A man comes to his senses and realizes that he has five, ten, or twenty million in the bank, or whatever it may be, along with other property.
But if you were to say, “Speak, you apartments; speak, you shops; speak, you money. Whose are you?” they would all cry out with one voice, “We certainly do not belong to you alone.”
For many people, by various schemes and frauds, manage to draw up documents and wills in their own names, forge signatures, enlarge the boundaries of their property, and commit a thousand and one deceptions. In this way, they now possess many things that once belonged to you, yet call them “mine.”
But if you ask these things whose they are, they will cry out, “We are not yours!” Now someone asks, “What am I to do to be saved, now that everything I have came from injustice?” You go and call out at the tomb of Zacchaeus, and say to him, “Zacchaeus, what did you do, that you were saved?” And he will answer you from inside, “Half of my possessions I give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” I took five thousand from the man ten years ago.
Then I will give him twenty now, not two or one, because I used his money and withheld it from him. I will repay four for every one. If I stole one lamb from him, I will give him four. As for what I stole, I will give half of my possessions to the poor. Go, then, and ask Zacchaeus, so that you may learn exactly how to act.
Otherwise, you will not learn. Some people now ask whether the money should be returned to those who were wronged or given to the poor. Perhaps the person wronged was rich and had no need of it. Would it not be better to give it to someone poor?
Zacchaeus said: “And if I have extorted anything from anyone, if I have wronged anyone, to that very person I give it back fourfold.” You cannot take what belongs to me and hand it over to somebody else. Nor can you take what belongs to one person in order to show mercy to another.
Nor can you wrong one person in order to heal another. No. You must heal the very person you wounded. We must not wound some people and heal others. John Chrysostom says:
But if those who were wronged are no longer present, or have died, what should the person who wronged them do?
The answer is that you must turn to their relatives. It does not matter whether those relatives are rich or poor. Were they not the heirs to everything else? Then they must receive this as well. It is not for you to decide otherwise.
It must be given to the relatives who are the heirs. If there are no relatives or heirs, then it should be given to the poor, to holy monasteries, to churches, or to religious institutions. It must not be given in your own name, but in the name of the person you wronged.
A man from America sent me some money the other day and asked me to send it to the Monastery of Myrtidia on Kythera. I do not know how he found me or why he chose me as the intermediary, but I sent it. The money even arrived anonymously; he had not included the sender’s name.
“Mr. Panagopoulos, please send this money on for me — six hundred and eighty drachmas.” And I received it. So I send it off to the Monastery of Myrtidia on Kythera. And yesterday a receipt comes back to me: “Thank you very much, Mr. Panagopoulos. We have received the six hundred and eighty drachmas for that purpose.” And they send the receipt to me.
But the money isn't mine; the reward for it will go to that other person. So you should make the deposit in the name of the one you wronged. In memory of George, in memory of Katina — whom did you throw out of their home, whose property have you devoured, whom did you wrong?
You must give it in that person’s name, whether to a Church, an orphanage, another institution you consider suitable, a monastery, or the poor, and you must do so in that person’s memory. In this way, you may be released from this whole matter.
Pay close attention to these things, even though they may seem unimportant. I do not know how many of us are gathered here tonight, but ninety percent of those listening, both those hearing this firsthand now and those who will hear it later wherever this recording goes, are implicated in what we are discussing tonight.
Some to a lesser degree and others to a greater degree, some directly and others in ways I cannot say, but we are guilty. Let us be watchful. Satan has countless ways of getting a person into his grasp, so we must be wise and careful. Do not be deceived. God sees from above and blesses only what is honest, moral, right, and fitting. He does not bless anything else.
And Christ tells us, as Matthew writes in the twelfth chapter, “He who does not gather with Me scatters.”
In other words, although you gather wealth, although you save it, although you make these things your own, and so on, in reality you are scattering. Circumstances arise in homes, families, and individual lives, and nothing of it remains.
In reality, you are scattering. Only what is honest, moral, and right endures. I do not know whether you remember the story I once told, about various people traveling in a small boat. Among them was a milkman.
Among the other passengers was a man who had a monkey and was taking it to the island, where it would perform and earn him a little money. The milkman had fallen asleep in a corner of the boat as it sailed along. The monkey got away from its handler, went over to the milkman, took the wallet out of his pocket, then leapt up and climbed to the top of the mast.
Then it opened the wallet and began throwing the money away: some into the sea, some into the boat; some into the sea, some into the boat.
The milkman awoke and shouted, “Stop!” He kept shouting and struggling in agitation. But the monkey’s owner said to him, “Do you know what it is doing? The money you received for the water you put into the milk, it is giving back to the water.”
The milkman stood frozen, utterly speechless. And that is exactly what the little rogue, the monkey, was doing. It threw into the sea the money he had made from the water in the milk. “This money,” the owner told him, “is truly yours.” If only we could have a monkey measure what truly belongs to each of us and separate it out, most of us would be left with very little.
It would leave many of us penniless—something we have never confessed, something that has never troubled our conscience or frightened us. And one day we shall find ourselves deeply bound by this matter. These would not be the thoughts of the man I mentioned to you. I have five minutes left now, but since the subject is about to change, let us stop here and, God willing, we shall return to it.
Αυτό ήταν στη σειρά και το συνόψισα, όπως βλέπετε, με το άλλο γρηγορότερα που έγινε επί το σημείο, με αυτό που σας διάβασα. Ακόμη ζητιέται μια γνώμη επάνω στο εξής ζήτημα. Έχει διατυπωθεί περίπου ως εξής: Τι λέτε για τα παιδιά που δεν θέλουν τους γονείς;
Δεν είναι ανάγκη ούτε στη στάση να πας, ούτε να βραχείς, ούτε να ζεσταθείς. Σου έχει τον άρρωστο μέσα στο σπίτι σου, το νοσοκομείο μέσα στο σπίτι σου. Λοιπόν, θα αφήσεις το δικό σου φέρετρο και θα πας να βγάλεις το φέρετρο του άλλου;
Το θεωρούσαν μεγάλο πράγμα, πολλώ μάλλον. Άλλωστε, πώς εσύ είσαι ο έξυπνος κι αυτή είναι η κουτή;
Ένα άλλο παράξενο είναι το εξής. Τι λέτε, κύριε Παναγόπουλε, για ένα έθιμο που επικρατεί σε μερικά μέρη της πατρίδος μας;
Όπως και ο σύζυγος και ο κύριος πρέπει να είναι αγνός Για κάποια έβα Δεν έχουν δικαιώματα οι άντρες που μπορεί να είναι άτιμοι. Και οι κυρίες, οι κοπέλες, να είναι τίμιες. Και να ζητάμε σωφροσύνη και από τους άλλους, όχι;
Δεν είναι λοιπόν σωστό αυτό. Και το κακό είναι ότι έχει επικρατήσει σαν έθιμο, και έτσι κάτω από το έθιμο υπάρχει ευλογία και συνεχίζεται η υπόθεση. Δεν θεωρείται κακό, εφόσον έδωσαν λόγον. Και αν χαλάσει αύριο αυτός ο λόγος του αρραβώνος, γιατί αυτή να είναι άτιμη;
Και αν δεν χαλάσει και λείπει στρατιώτης και ένα, δύο, τρία, τέσσερα χρόνια κλπ., και συλλάβει άπαξ, δύο, τρεις κλπ., και σκοτώσει τόσα παιδιά, πώς θα στήσετε έπειτα το σπιτάκι σας, ευλογημένο από τον Θεό, μετά το γάμο σας;
Πώς θα γίνουν αυτά;
Μα όπως τα λέτε εσείς, «Πίσω μου, σατανά», λέω μέσα μου. «Τι είναι αυτό τώρα το αίσθημα; Γιατί με ρωτάτε;» Τι είναι αυτό το οποίο σας συνέχει μέσα σας; Κάτι σας ελέγχει μέσα σας. Πείτε μου, εδώ στο σταυροδρόμι, στην Κυψέλη, τι είναι αυτό;
Αυτό πώς το λέτε;
Από πού φαίνεται, κύριε Παναγόπουλε, ότι εν τω καιρώ του θανάτου δεν συναποθνήσκει μετά του σώματος η ψυχή;
Πολίτων και κοιμημένων γέρθησαν καλά την ημέρα σταυρώσεως του Χριστού μας Πού ευρέθηκαν οι ψυχές; Άρα υπάρχουν. Λοιπόν, μην πλανώμεθα. Στη συνέχεια, κάτι άλλο. Η ερώτηση είναι: Αν ένας έχει πλούτον, πώς θα εννοήσουμε δι' αυτόν;
Το ερώτημα, κατ’ επέκταση, είναι: έχει μισθόν εκείνος ο οποίος δίδει ελεημοσύνη από τα χρήματα που διά του πονηρού απέκτησε;
Και προ ημερών, μάλιστα, δύο την ίδια ημέρα μου τηλεφώνησαν και με ρωτούσαν γι’ αυτό το εδάφιο. Ποια είναι η ερμηνεία αυτού του εδαφίου;
Διαφορετικά, δεν πρόκειται να μάθεις. Τώρα, λένε ορισμένοι, εις τους ίδιους να τα δώσει, που αδίκησε, ή εις τους φτωχούς; Μπορεί να έχει αδικήσει έναν πλούσιο, κάποιον που δεν τα έχει ανάγκη. Δεν είναι καλύτερα να δώσει σε έναν πτωχό;
Αν δεν είναι παρόντες ή απέθαναν, τι να κάνει ο άνθρωπος που έχει αδικήσει;
