God has granted us to enter the new year as well. I pray that He will bless it for us, and that we, for our part, will choose to make better use of this time, because He has shown us mercy many times.

The justice of God has often demanded that we depart from this world, because we accomplish nothing of real worth. But, as you see, Christ intercedes and says, “Leave him for this year also; leave her for this year also, so that they may do something where, until now, they have done nothing.”

And although this kindness, this forbearance of God, gives us additional time and helps us finish what must be done and put our affairs in order, we still do not make use of it as we should. I do not know whether, during these days, you noticed what John the Forerunner said to the Sadducees and the others who came to the place where he was preaching. At one point it says: “When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, ‘Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruit worthy of repentance, and do not presume to say among yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.”’”

"For I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham." He preaches repentance. And then someone says, "I'll go to confession. God is good. I'll do whatever I have to do, and then I'll go and tell it all" — and that's how we settle our accounts.

But here the preacher of repentance thinks otherwise. He says: “Brood of vipers! Who told you that you could put yourselves right with God in this easy way, through a barren repentance, simply by entering the Jordan, let us say, and confessing whatever you have to confess? Bear,” he says, “fruits worthy of repentance.”

It is not enough to say, “Forgive me,” to someone you have harmed and wronged, when at the same time you have drained the very blood from him. You are obliged to give that blood back. If you have treated someone unjustly, you are obliged to restore what was unjustly taken from him.

If you killed your child and threw it into the rubbish, then you, whether man or woman, are obliged to bring another child into the world. If you stole, you are obliged to return what you stole. If you committed an injustice, you must make restitution for it. If you falsely accused someone, if you blasphemed, if you did this, if you did that...

In other words, you must prove through your deeds that your metanoia, your repentance, is truly sincere. I know people who, because they intend to go to confession at Christmas or Pascha, say, “Let us commit this sin as well.”

And many of them never lived to reach confession. This is a grave offense, and God is greatly angered when a person takes advantage of His forbearance.

Two young men here in Athens had arranged to go to the Church of the Panagia Chrysospiliotissa for confession.

One of them went, made his confession, and waited for the other. But the other never arrived. When the first young man came outside, he telephoned the house. “Has George left?” “Of course; he left at four.” It was now eight in the evening. “Where has he been for four hours? Who is this?” “It is me, John.”

“He left and was coming to meet you. You were going somewhere together.” “Yes, that is why I was waiting for him. But he never came.” Who knew what had happened to him? What was discovered afterward? Since he was planning to go to confession, he had first stopped by his girlfriend’s house to get his dose.

As he was going down the stairs, he fell and broke his back. I do not know whether he is still paralyzed at KAT Hospital. This happened two years ago, do you understand? We trade upon grace. “Let us do this too; God is good. Of course we have time. We have time.”

This is where a person goes astray and blasphemes God. It is blasphemy against God, who grants him more time so that he may repent, return, enter the right path, and take care to set things right, or at least beseech God to grant him enough time to complete his repentance.

For a person’s repentance is not a barren confession in words; it is a confession demonstrated in deeds. “May God help me to live long enough to return to you what I took from you. May God help me to live long enough to have those children whom I killed.”

“May I put this right, and that as well.” This is confession in deeds and repentance in deeds, the repentance that Christ preaches. Therefore, although He made salvation readily available to man through repentance, the Saint warns them in advance at this point. When he saw many people coming, he understood that they were going merely out of routine, just as we might go to confession at Christmas.

Christmas. Not that they're going to change their lives. From that point on they do exactly the same things. They just went because it was Christmas. Others go for Pascha, others for the fifteenth of August, the feast of the Dormition. But their life stays the same life. No change. Because repentance means a turn-around, a complete change of direction. Repentance. It's as if someone gives you an order, the way officers give orders to their soldiers: "About face!" You were heading this way, and now you have to turn around and go the other way.

You must turn and go in the completely opposite direction. Not halfway, not a little to the right or the left, but a full turn of exactly one hundred and eighty degrees. If you did one thing, you must now do its complete opposite. As I said, this applies to the whole succession of sins people commit. The honorable Forerunner said to them, “Brood of vipers,” because he discerned their wickedness. They had come calculating how little they could do; they had not come with simple and sincere hearts.

“Who told you that you would escape the wrath of God?” And he called them a “brood of vipers.” You know, it is said that the viper gives birth to her young in this way:

The young pierce through her belly, and in the process the viper dies. Her belly is torn open; from within, the young eat through their mother’s belly and emerge, while she perishes. That is how he described them—the Sadducees and those others from among the Pharisees who had gone there. They did not go with broken and contrite hearts, in metanoia and repentance, determined to change their lives from that moment onward. They went merely as a formality, just as we do.

The churches have emptied. Why? Where are the people who came at Christmas? Where are those who filled the churches and even stood outside? Where are all those people now? They are not even inside. If there were two thousand people in a church then, now only one hundred attend.

Where are the other 1,900? These are people who attend church merely as a formality and are religious only in outward appearance. God grants them still more time, so that they may be left without excuse. Yet they continue doing the same things.

So he tells them: It is not enough to say, as we would today, “I am a Christian.” They claimed Abraham as their father and therefore believed they were entitled to salvation and an inheritance, and that God should regard them as Abraham’s descendants and consequently as His own children. But he says that God has no need of you.

"God is able," he says, "to raise up children for Abraham out of these stones." Out of these stones! He has no need of you. Because many of us often boast about such things: "You know, we had a nun in our family. Bishop So-and-so is a friend of ours, he was our uncle; Archimandrite So-and-so," and so on.

These things may well be true — and they may indeed be. But they don't save you. Just as your own works don't save you — Christ is the one who saves you — in exactly the same way, none of this saves you either. It's just a big label: that you come from a line of priests, that you come from a line of monks and nuns, that you're I don't know what.

What is needed is metanoia—true repentance—and a sense of fear within us: “My God, how do You still put up with me? My God, why did You not cut the thread of my life in ’78? How did You grant me the grace to enter ’79?”

“Help me, then, to make good use of this treasure called time, so that Your blood may not have been shed for me in vain.” Behind every soul stands a great capital sum, a binding guarantee. People speak of a dollar clause, supposedly as a safeguard.

But here the guarantee is the blood of Jesus Christ. Every soul has, as it were, a deposit in the bank of God: the blood of Jesus, the blood of Christ. A person must take this into account, though of course he is free to dispose of his soul as he wishes.

But if a person stops to think that their soul does not belong to them, that someone else has been sacrificed for that soul and has paid the price for it, then they ought not to live the way they are living. These words passed by unnoticed, and I am setting this subject down here as a kind of side note, because of course what we have been hearing are certain pieces about the life of the Honourable Forerunner, and above all about the work that he had to offer in those days of Jesus who became man, the incarnate Lord.

He was counted worthy to baptize Him, to speak with Him at the moment of His Baptism, to experience all that he experienced, and to hear from Christ what he heard—and what the people also heard—about who John was, where he came from, and how highly he was regarded in the eyes of God. For you remember what the Lord said: “Among those born of women, no one is greater than John the Forerunner.”

“What did you go out to see him as? A reed shaken by the wind, moved by the slightest breeze?” No, I tell you. What do you take him for? A prophet, and more than a prophet. That is what Christ says. He also made a distinction between John, the greatest man of the Old Testament, and the person of the New Testament.

For although John is the greatest man of the Old Testament, even the least person in the New Testament is greater than he is, greater even than John the Forerunner. In other words, those who come to believe in Christ are placed above the honored Forerunner.

Christ makes this distinction with regard to that time. These matters were left aside as incidental points, and so, by the grace of God, I am bringing them to light, in order to connect these events for you and to let us hear John’s preaching as well.

John's preaching was real fire, and it struck every single person right where it hurt, as the saying goes. «Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees», he says. The axe is the justice of God, which, as we have said at some other time when we were speaking about this,

is usually depicted in the icon of the honored Forerunner as an axe, a hatchet. A hatchet has no other purpose or function: it is made to cut down and clear away.

to cleanse it. Yet for the axe to cut, it cannot cut by itself; someone must take it up and use it. This is the justice of God that lies at the root of the tree. The tree is the human person, and each person has many withered branches upon him; someone must take up this axe and clear away those dead branches. The Honorable Forerunner, of course, thought that the time had then come for this to happen. But that was not yet the time.

Proof of this is that Christ left the honored Forerunner in prison and departed for Galilee, going to Capernaum, as you know. Yet this justice of God has not yet operated or been employed, even to this day.

It remains at the root of the tree. God has not yet taken this axe, this hatchet, into His hands to clear things away. It does act, of course, in the case of particular people who die, because whoever has already died has been judged and has no further opportunity. The final image has captured him covered with dead, withered branches, and therefore the justice of God will be inexorable toward that person.

But in general, the justice of God will judge. On that day. "God having provided something better for us, so that they would not be made perfect apart from us." "They subdued kingdoms," it says; by faith they did this, by faith they did that. "They shut the mouths of lions, they quenched the power of fire," they did...

Women received their children back through resurrection, and so forth.

And so on. Yet neither the reward nor the punishment has been given to mankind. God has appointed another day, a very great day, and everyone—those of the Old Testament and those of the New Testament—awaits it, so that all may be judged together: some to receive their crown, and others to receive their sentence of condemnation and depart to that place where they will lament their fate for all eternity. This axe, then, is the justice of God, which is not acting today; it remains still, at rest. For if the justice of God were acting, no human being could remain in the world. If God's justice appeared every time we sinned and cut off one of our hands, or took out one of our eyes, or cut off one of our ears, we would have nothing left.

We have none of these achievements to our credit, yet God watches over us and postpones judgment. He shows forbearance and waits. If we repent, all is well. If we do not repent, His justice will act one day. This is also shown when He saw the fig tree that bore no figs and gave the command that it be removed, because, He said, it was even wasting the ground.

The shade of the fig tree is heavy; nothing will grow underneath a fig tree. And if you even happen to fall asleep under it, you get up with a headache. That is what many people in this world are like. Not only do they offer nothing, they also become a harm to others.

They bring ruin upon others through their conduct, their ideas, their words, and their whole way of life. The justice of God demands that such fruitlessness be removed. But Christ intervenes, as I told you at the beginning.

and he asks that this person be given more time. “Leave it,” he says, “this year also, and let us put manure at the root.” And if they do not act, if they do not repent — if they bear no fruit worthy of repentance — then: “But if not, you shall cut it down in the future.” Then, he says, cut it down. Christ is the one who steps in for each one of us.

And we are given more time; it does not come from us. That is why each person must reflect on this preaching of John and attend to his repentance, making it concrete, truly concrete. It must not be merely saying, “Forgive me,” but also putting right the wrong that was done.

Not merely, “Forgive me,” but also returning what was stolen and making restitution to those who were wronged. Indeed, we must put right the whole disorderly and lawless life we have lived. This is why He gives us more days. “But how am I supposed to find where they are?” There are countless ways.

If a person truly wants to, he can put many things right. How can you be sure that what you possess really belongs to you?

It is someone else’s sweat, someone else’s share, someone else’s blood and labor. By what right will you keep it? “But I have nothing.” Then give it back in full, just as it is. Take what you have, sell it, and give back the full amount; replace what was taken. Set this injustice right. It will not be put right with a simple apology. What good is an apology? This has happened—what can be done now? Can it be otherwise? Yes, it certainly can. Do you know what the Fathers say? Let me dwell for a moment on this point.

This is what it means to perform works worthy of repentance, works that prove: “Yes, I repented, and I put this matter right.” Do you know what they say? Suppose, for example, that one spouse in a married couple dies. Suppose I myself were to die,

and then, after some time, rise from the dead. I would no longer be my wife’s husband, nor would she still be my wife, because death separated me from her and released me from those obligations and duties.

But if I die after having wronged someone over money, property, or anything else, and then rise from the dead, I am still obliged to repay whatever I took from him unjustly. I still owe him those things. Not even death settles such debts for us.

You have heard of labor laws which say, “These are wages owed to a worker, and you will pay them even if you die.” You are not released from the debt. There is a law under which nothing releases you from what you owe someone who worked for you.

You will pay it even after death. It is exactly the same with the matters I am speaking to you about.

Therefore, make good use of the time we have. Whatever belongs to someone else, a spoon, a fork, a book, a tool, whatever it may be, return it to its proper place as quickly as possible.

Years ago, I gave a talk among secular people who were also quite wealthy. I said something along these lines, and the next day a young woman came to my house and said, “Mr. Panagopoulos, take this package and send it to Switzerland, to this address.

Here is the money as well. Pack it and prepare it however you think best, so that it arrives safely. It is from Mrs. So-and-so.” “But why,” I asked, “should I send it? What is this?” “I do not know what is inside,” she said. “Just send it yourself. That is what she told me.” I telephoned the woman because the whole matter seemed strange to me, and I wanted to learn what was going on.

What business did I have with such things? What connection did they have with sending something abroad? They had money and sometimes traveled there themselves, so why should I take responsibility for it? I opened the package to see what it contained and found small serving dishes and fine silver cutlery, all bearing the name of a hotel.

These people had stolen them from that hotel, and now they wanted me to pack them and send them back, with my own recommendation, to the hotel from which they had been taken.

They had been convicted in their conscience by what they heard in the talk.

Do you know how many things like this there are? Not merely one or two. And what we owe is not limited to knives, forks, serving dishes, books, or tools. It concerns children, children whom we owe to God.

On my way here just now, a driver was bringing me, and I do not know how the conversation came up, but we began talking about abortion.

“At two months,” he said, “we threw it away. We killed it.

My wife aborted it when it was two months old.” “Why did you throw it away?” I asked. “What had it done to you?” He said, “I do not know from how many months onward it can be considered a living being.” “It is a living being from the moment it is conceived. If it was not alive, what were you afraid of?

So it was alive, and that is why you were afraid of it. Because it was alive, you feared it. If it had been dead, you would not have feared it. If it were not a living being, why would you go and tear it out? It is a living being from the moment it is conceived. They threw it away at two months.”

By the time this man had driven me here from Pangrati, he no longer wanted to leave. “What do you think?” he asked me. “Have we committed a crime?” “What else have you done?” I said. “Do you think you have performed an act of charity? Take care to go to Holy Confession, and now, while you are still young, see to it that you bring the child here before us.”

Have that child again, as it were. If you are going to have two, three, or five children, then give us ten, so that this deed may also be blotted out and we may begin to put the matter right. Unfortunately, many people do not take this seriously.

They make a dry, perfunctory confession and receive a prayer on top of it. Then the person goes and receives Holy Communion, imagining that he is a friend of God and a Christian, although he is far removed from the truth, as the honorable Forerunner tells us here.

Because the justice of God does not act today, we deceive ourselves, since He does not punish us. The man I was speaking with, the one I mentioned to you, told me about that monstrosity born up there. “Could that have been a punishment from God?” he asked. “Because God does not seem to appear anywhere.”

Of course, I said whatever I could to help the man. But woe to us when God does appear. For when God appears, He will not come holding a bouquet of flowers or carrying a feather.

Woe to the person who asks for the day of God to come. So the prophet Amos says: Woe unto him who seeks the day of the Lord to come. Because the day of the Lord is a harsh day, a day of vengeance, a day of justice.

Who can stand before the justice of God? What does David say? “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” Who can stand before You if You apply Your justice?

We presume upon His goodness, saying, “God is good.” And who ever said that He is evil? But God is also just, and He loves righteousness.

He does not love the person who persists in sin.

He does not blame the person; He blames the sin, and it is the sin He wants to set right, so long as the person is still here in this life. That is why repentance always has to be something daily, something for every single moment. And a person should live in fear even while they are on the road, once they have set out to go to their confessor.

He goes to cleanse himself of everything he carries within him. Even then he must be afraid and entreat Christ: “My Christ, I beg You, let me arrive and make my confession. Let me reach him; do not let me perish on the way.” You do not know whether you will arrive. A person holds nothing in his hands as a guarantee, nothing but the mercy of God.

And when God sees humility, a humble disposition, and fear of sin, He grants more time and creates the conditions for that person to bring his life to completion, to settle the matter of his sins in this world, and not to fear the axe lying at the root of the tree.

Within the Church there are two things that remind us of the justice of God, even though it has not yet acted. One is the axe mentioned by the honorable Forerunner, lying at the foot of the tree. The other is the bishop’s throne, which I have spoken to you about before. No vigil lamp burns there. Before all the icons in the Church, those of our Lord and of the Theotokos, oil lamps burn beautifully. But no lamp burns at the bishop’s throne, even though the Lord is depicted there seated upon His throne.

Because that icon depicts the Judgement. And because the Judgement is without mercy — there is no mercy there. There the justice of God is at work. So the Church reminds us of it already here, in this life. And that is why she lights no lamp there. It is as if she is saying, "Be careful that you don't end up here." If you do come here, to the Judgement, woe to you. There is no room for pleading here.

There will be no room to say, “You know, I did not know,” or, “You know, I did not have enough time.” There you will be judged. So whenever we see that axe at the root of the tree, it should remind us of the justice of God.

“Every tree,” meaning every person, “that does not bear good fruit,” every person who does not do what is right,

It is cut down — it is cut down and thrown into the fire. "Depart from Me into the eternal fire." And he goes on with his mission, so that he may point out and commend the One for whose sake he came. "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance." Because you who are coming here — you Pharisees, you Sadducees and the rest — you are people who come simply for a simple act of repentance.

But this repentance by itself does not save you. I am preparing you; my task is different. “He who comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.” You may not know the significance of this detail. Among the peoples of the East, in addition to the other household duties with which we are familiar, there was another particular service.

There is also another service. A servant waited at the door. When the master arrived, the servant removed his shoes, whether they were stained, muddy, dusty, or whatever their condition might be. He took them away and gave the master clean slippers to wear as he walked through the house.

When the master went out again, he left the slippers there, and the servant put his outdoor shoes back on him before he departed. This was considered the lowliest service, because it dealt with footwear that had trodden upon every kind of filth and uncleanness.

“Compared with the One who is coming after me,” he says, “the One whom I wish to introduce to you, I am nothing. I am not worthy even to untie the strap of His sandal. I am not worthy to perform even this service for Him.”

But He is the One who will baptize us with the Holy Spirit and with fire. The water of the Jordan was simply a type, pointing ahead to the coming of grace. For the grace that truly cleanses a person’s sins to come, the One coming after John had to appear. Elsewhere John says of Him, “He who comes after me has come before me.” He would come after John, six months later, for that was the difference in age, humanly speaking, between the honorable Forerunner and the Lord.

That was the difference between them.

They are different. And yet, “He has come to be before me” — He existed before I did. In other words, this One is not only man; He is also God. This passage is a doctrinal one. The One who comes after me as a man, six months after me, is before me, because He is also God; He is not only man. So then, I have neither the strength nor the worthiness to untie His sandals or to carry them for Him.

Am I the one to carry those dusty sandals of his? He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. All I am doing is giving you a preparatory training, a first lesson. And here I would like to say a few words about the baptism of our Lord and the baptism of John.

You often hear people, especially heretics, Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and others, speaking to us about Christ’s Baptism. “Why do you baptize children?” they ask. “Why did my father have me baptized? Did he ask me? When was Christ baptized? Was He not baptized at the age of thirty?” But was Christ baptized with the same Baptism as yours?

Was Christ baptized with the saving Baptism, or with a baptism of repentance? John administered a baptism of repentance. Today, if we are baptized, even as adults, are we baptized with John’s baptism or with Christ’s Baptism?

Into the baptism of Christ. What John was doing was a type, a foreshadowing. He was preparing a people for Christ. The one who is coming after me — he will cleanse you, with the Holy Spirit and with fire. The baptism of repentance is one thing; the baptism of salvation is another.

Baptism is called regeneration. Do you know that, gentlemen? Repentance before Baptism is not required when a person has never been baptized.

Someone who has not been baptized does not first go to Holy Confession and then proceed to Baptism. He goes and is baptized, and Baptism washes everything away. Holy Confession concerns sins committed after Baptism.

Our Christ, knowing that a person would sin even after Baptism, gave him a second baptism: that of metanoia, repentance, and Holy Confession. This is why Saint Gregory of Nyssa, the brother of Basil the Great, says, “Even a single falling tear is equal to the laver.”

That is, if a single tear of repentance falls, it is as though you were baptized anew. It does not follow that an unbaptized person is saved merely by confessing. He is not saved. Holy Confession is for those who have been baptized and for sins committed after Baptism, whether they are young or old.

John’s baptism has nothing in common with the Baptism of our Lord and with our own Baptism. Our Baptism, especially infant Baptism, is related to circumcision. They claim that a person must personally confess the faith before being baptized.

Did the child who was circumcised make a confession of faith? A child only eight days old?

Yet if he was not circumcised, he could be cut off, even put to death by stoning, though he belonged to the people of God. The uncircumcised person corresponded to what we would today call the unbaptized person. Just as the parent, the priest, and those present then confessed their faith in God’s commandment on the child’s behalf, so it is here as well.

Why is the sponsor called a sponsor? Because the sponsor receives the child, assumes responsibility for him, and confesses the faith on behalf of this little one. Through their faith, the child becomes a friend of God, a little saint, who thereafter.... After all, what harm was done to you? You were given a bath, a warm one at that, and with oil!

If you do not want to believe it, cast it aside and deny it. Why become enraged over it? “Did anyone ask me?” he says. No, they did not ask you. But did they harm you? If you dislike it now that you are a grown man and think you know everything, can you not renounce it?

You can cast it aside. Does Baptism impose something upon you that you cannot reject? What is it that troubles you? It is not troubling you; it troubles the devil within you. He is the one who dislikes it. He does not like Baptism.

Satan is afraid of baptism. Saint John of Bostra once laid hold of Satan, just as Saint Anthony the Great did, and he questioned him. "I adjure you," he says to him, "tell me what it is about Christians that you are afraid of." And the devil said that there are three things he fears.

“First of all,” he said, “Baptism.”

Baptism, then the Precious Cross, and third, Holy Communion. “These are the three things,” he says, “that I fear in Christians. And if Christians kept their Baptism undefiled and their Holy Communion pure, none of us could come near you.” Do you understand? But we believe these things, and yet we do not truly believe them. That is why, when another unbeliever heard about our teaching—our faith, he had no desire at all to live it.

An unbeliever stood up in the middle of the group and said this to the company: “If I believed the things you say, I would go out into the middle of the street, right onto the main road, and I would stop the traffic and shout:

“Repent, change your lives, turn back. This is the truth.” But I do not believe these things. “You who do believe them,” he says, “what are you doing?”

We simply take the Agiasmos, the blessing of water, from the Church courtyard and go home to bless the men’s trousers worn by the women. That is what we do. And we go to bless beds that bear no children, but serve only for fornication.

We go to bless shopkeepers who steal and lie from morning until night. What exactly are we going to bless? This is what we have become. And yet the axe still lies at the root of the tree. As long as the axe remains there, a person has both consolation and fear, because he does not know the hour. You do not know, it says, when the Lord will return from the wedding feast. No one knows.

When a person seriously considers that there is no present moment for him, as we have said many times, but only the past and the future, he realizes that he controls nothing. His past has gone, his future does not belong to him, and he possesses no present, because the present belongs to God alone.

Man has no present. His soul must free itself from fear as soon as possible, because he does not know at what hour God will cut off the light of his life. And then what happens, my children? Where do we go then? What excuses will we find? What will we say?

A man of ninety-three died a few days ago. Another Christian told me, “Father, at the very last moment he asked for a priest, but none could be found.” How could a priest be found at the last moment, when he had not sought one for ninety-three years?

For ninety-three years he shut out the grace of God, which was waiting for him, and this gentleman trafficked in it and made a mockery of it. He would sit in the café telling me obscenities and boasting of his youthful exploits in Chicago and elsewhere.

And he corrupted the boys and girls who were there. Should this new Pharaoh and new Herod also happen to have a priest beside him at the final moment? And is God to blame? “I gave you ninety-three years to come to your senses, and you treated them with contempt. Now must I also keep a feather ready to dust you off?”

Everything has its limits.

A person becomes hardened through his own doing, and then we come along—we “super-Christians”—and say, “Well, why shouldn’t a priest have been there? He should have put one in his basket and kept him close at hand, so that whenever he needed him, he could take him out and go to Confession.” When those others went up to the moon, they took an oxygen tank with them. They had the foresight to bring it; they did not simply go as they were.

“God is good; He will receive us.” It is absurd for anyone to say such things today, when people know so much more than in earlier times. So John says, “He who comes after me will baptize you in water, in the Holy Spirit, and in fire.” And you see that today our Church has joined these two baptisms together: John’s baptism in water and the baptism in the Spirit, proclaimed in the words, “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

As soon as the child is baptized, the priest anoints him with Holy Chrism and gives him the grace of the Holy Spirit.

He anoints the child’s feet, head, eyes, hands, and every part of him, arming them all with the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that whatever he touches may be sanctified, whatever he handles may be blessed, and whatever he does may be right.

But as we grow older, we cast these things aside, often with the help of our own mother, father, sponsor, godmother, and the rest. And so we become what we become.

John’s baptism, then, has nothing to do with waiting until we are thirty years old. If we die before then, where will we go? That is the question. When that good man Nicodemus went by night to speak with Christ, what did Christ say to him as soon as he entered?

“All this is well and good, Nicodemus. You made a sacrifice by coming here to Me. If they see you, you will lose your position.” That is why he went by night to meet Christ. “But this alone will not save you. You need to be born again.”

“Unless you are born of water and the Spirit, unless you are born from above,” He told him, “you can accomplish nothing.” Nicodemus thought that he would have to enter his mother’s womb again and be born. So he said, “How is it possible for me, now that I am an old man, to enter my mother’s womb and be born again?”

“I am not speaking of that womb. I mean birth of water and the Spirit. There is another womb, called the baptismal font. You will enter there. Just as I remained in the tomb for three days, you will be immersed there three times.” For we are not baptized with John’s baptism; we are baptized into the burial of Christ and the Resurrection.

I do not know how many of you have ever given thought to this subject, but since it has come before us, allow me to explain it.

We are often present at this Mystery of Baptism, and they pin a little token here on our lapel. Do you know what it is? Take care not to wear it there.

One day Christ will pull you up by the hair and call you to account. This is called a martyrikon. You were a witness. Just as witnesses are needed when a will is drawn up or a contract is signed, so you were present as a witness to a confession: that the child renounces Satan and joins himself to Christ. Take heed!

You are taking responsibility for this child. Tomorrow, besides the godparent, you too must speak to the child. You too must speak. All who were present will one day be witnesses for the prosecution. You too will be called to account for having been there.

You are duty-bound to pray for that child, to counsel him, and to remind him. My child, I was standing right there when we gave our promise to God that you renounce Satan and unite yourself to Christ. Have you ever come back to yourself? These are dangerous things; these are serious responsibilities. It is not simply that a sponsorship happened to come along — what the sponsor was wearing, what gifts she gave, whether people were half-dressed. That is not what this is.

Listen to what it says: “As many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death. Therefore, through Baptism, we were buried with Him into death.” Just as Christ died, was buried, and rose on the third day, so we too, being dead because of ancestral sin, are buried. The baptismal font is a tomb. There are no ifs or buts here, no voting and no canvassing for votes.

It is a tomb. The child who was dead is buried and rises again. “Therefore, through Baptism, we were buried with Him into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”

The child is a new human being, with a new heart. The heart that was black has become white, then red, like a burning coal. It is no longer a black, lifeless coal as it was before. The child is no longer a little dragon, but a little saint.

Then it says: “For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall also share in His Resurrection.” If, then, we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, this does not mean that we were buried exactly as Christ was. It was in His likeness, in a similar way, not in precisely the same way.

For if we were buried in a tomb in exactly the same way, beneath the earth, we would die. But we are buried in a like and similar way. We enact the form of burial; we make the confession that we are entering a tomb, but without dying.

That is why the Church places us in water. We can endure it and enact the type without dying. This is why it says, “in the likeness of the death of Jesus,” meaning in a similar way. Is a likeness the person himself? No. It is his likeness; it resembles him perfectly, but it is not the person himself.

That is exactly what happened there. Therefore, whenever we see the baptismal font, we should see the tomb, the tomb of Christ. The human being is buried within it and comes out a new human being. But this is not what happened the other day at the Jordan. Christ did not go there to receive the Baptism of salvation.

He is the one who instituted the baptism of salvation. “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” And Himself. He put His own self in there too.

There they would confess their sins. They would enter the water, and while they were held in the water, they would confess their sins. But our Christ had no sins to confess. I do not know whether you noticed what the Evangelist said.

"Immediately," he says, "He came up out of the water." Well then, why didn't He stay down in the water like the others? Because He had nothing to confess. He was only fulfilling the type — going through the outward form, the pattern of it — as the man that He truly was. And He too had to show that He is obedient to God; He is not one who goes against what God says.

That is why He corrected the honorable Forerunner, saying to him, “Permit it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”

“To fulfill all righteousness.” Since I became man and was circumcised, I too will submit to this. And the Most Holy Theotokos, my mother, will submit to purification as though she were unclean, and I will do what God has commanded you to do. Did God not send you, John, to baptize? Yes. Therefore I too, since I am now man, will be baptized. And so He was baptized with a baptism of repentance, not a Baptism of salvation. One baptism, then, differs from the other. You should know how to answer on these matters. The two have nothing in common. The infant Baptism that we perform is the counterpart of circumcision. Paul writes this in Colossians. Indeed, this is the Apostle reading appointed for the day of the Circumcision: circumcision was replaced by infant Baptism. That is precisely why, in the sequence of services for a child from birth until the day of Baptism, there is a special service in the Euchologion for the eighth day.

In the Euchologion, the Church's book of prayers, there is the service of the naming, in which the child is given its name. The prayers for the new mother are a different thing: those are said right after she has given birth, when she comes to receive the prayers of the Church. And the service in which the child is given its name before it is baptized is yet another thing, because these are two separate occasions.

The naming is one thing, and Baptism is another. Yes, they are two separate occasions. As you have seen, the naming takes place at the back, in the narthex, during the catechesis. Baptism is something else. It takes place inside the Church, in a separate service.

And how does he baptize him? It begins, «Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit...» The one is one thing, the other is something else entirely. But people don't know this. Sadly, the Church today doesn't remind them of it, people don't ask for it, and so it simply doesn't happen. So let no one ever get tangled up and say, «Christ was baptized back then.»

At that time Christ made the confession in its outward form; He did not receive the Baptism that we receive. John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance, in which people confessed their sins to John. Christ, having no sins, fulfilled only its formal aspect. We are baptized with the Baptism of Christ. John teaches these things as a necessary complement. His teaching lies between the two Gospel readings concerning the Baptism, the reading for the feast itself and the one for the preceding day of preparation, the two events we have heard about.

The intervening passage, containing the severity of John’s words, is left out; it is not presented in the Church, and the people do not know it. For this reason, by the grace of God, I thought I should say a few words about it this evening, to bridge the two readings and present the whole person of John and the fullness of his teaching. That is all, by the grace of God, for this evening. Amen.

Χρειάζεται μετάνοια, πραγματική μετάνοια, και ένας φόβος στον άνθρωπο. Θεέ μου, πώς με ανέχεσαι ακόμη; Θεέ μου, πώς δεν μου έκοψες το νήμα το ’78, πώς μου επέτρεψες να περάσω στο ’79;

Αν ο άνθρωπος θέλει, μπορεί να τακτοποιήσει πολλά πράγματα. Πόσο ξέρεις ότι αυτό που κατέχεις δεν είναι δικό σου;

Το πέταξε η γυναίκα μου δύο μηνών». Γιατί, λέει, το πετάξατε; Τι σας έκανε; Λέει, μα δεν νομίζω από πόσο μηνών και έπειτα, μου λέει, μπορεί να είναι, μου λέει, ύπαρξη. Από την ώρα που συνελήφθη. Γιατί, αν δεν ήταν ζωντανό, τι φοβόσουνα;

Ποιος μπορεί να σταθεί μπροστά στη δικαιοσύνη του Θεού; Πώς λέει εκεί πέρα ο Δαβίδ; Ἐὰν ἀνομίας παρατηρήσῃς, Κύριε, Κύριε, τίς ὑποστήσεται; Ποιος μπορεί να σταθεί μπροστά σου, αν πάρεις τη δικαιοσύνη;

Ακούτε πολλές φορές, κατ' εξοχήν από τους αιρετικούς, από τους προτεστάντες, από τους Ιεχωβάδες και τους άλλους, να μας μιλάνε για το βάπτισμα αυτό του Χριστού. Γιατί βαφτίζετε λέει τα παιδιά, γιατί με βάφτισε λέει ο πατέρας μου, με ρώτησε εμένα Πότε βαφτίστηκε ο Χριστός, δεν βαφτίστηκε 30 ετών Μα ο Χριστός εβαπτίσθη το βάπτισμα το δικό σου;

Βάπτισμα σωτηρίας ή βάπτισμα μετανοίας εβαπτίσθη ο Χριστός; Ο Ιωάννης εβάπτιζε βάπτισμα μετανοίας. Εμείς σήμερα, έστω και μεγάλοι, αν βαπτιστούμε, θα βαπτιστούμε στο βάπτισμα του Ιωάννου ή στο βάπτισμα του Χριστού;

Το παιδί το οποίο περιετέμνετο ομολογούσε; Οχτώ ημερών παιδί;

Ο ανάδοχος γιατί λέγεται ανάδοχος; Αναδέχεται, αναλαμβάνει, ομολογεί για λογαριασμό αυτού του μικρού και για την πίστη αυτών το παιδί αυτό γίνεται φίλος του Θεού. Ένας μικρός άγιος, που στη συνέχεια... Άλλωστε, τι κακό σου έκανε; Που σου έκαμε ένα μπάνιο, και ζεστό μάλιστα, και με λάδι;

Δεν το θέλεις να το πιστεύεις, πέταξε το αρνήσου το Τι είναι αυτό που σε κάνει θηρίο; «Με ρώτησε», λέει, «εμένα;» Δεν σε ρώτησε. Σου έκαμε κακό; Εσύ δεν μπορείς να το αποβάλεις αυτό, εφόσον δεν σ' αρέσει τώρα που είσαι λεβέντης ή τα ξέρεις όλα;

“Μετανοήστε, αλλάξτε ζωή, γυρίστε πίσω. Αυτή είναι η αλήθεια”. Δεν τα πιστεύω όμως. Εσείς», λέει, «που τα πιστεύετε, τι κάνετε;

Ο άνθρωπος δεν έχει παρόν. Πρέπει να βγει η ψυχή του μια ώρα γρηγορότερα από το φόβο, διότι δεν ξέρει τι ώρα θα κάνει και θα του κόψει το φως ο Θεός. Και τότε τι γίνεται, παιδιά; Πού πάμε τότε; Τι δικαιολογίες θα βρούμε; Τι θα πούμε;

93 χρονών πέθανε ένας προ ημερών. Ζητούσε, μου έλεγε ένας άλλος χριστιανός: «Παπά μου», λέει, «την τελευταία στιγμή», μου λέει, «αλλά δεν ευρέθη». Πού να βρεθεί την τελευταία στιγμή, εφόσον δεν ευρέθη 93 χρόνια;

Και διέφθειρε τα παιδιά και τα κορίτσια που υπήρχαν εκεί πέρα. Θα λάχει και στην τελευταία στιγμή αυτού του νέου Φαραώ και του νέου Ηρώδου να του έχει και παπά; Και φταίει ο Θεός; Σου προσθέτω 93 χρόνια για να έρθεις στον εαυτό σου και τα γράφεις στα παπούτσια σου, και τώρα θα σου έχω πούπουλο να σε σκουπίσω;

Δεν έχει λοιπόν καμιά σχέση το βάπτισμα του Ιωάννου, που θα περιμένουμε εμείς να γίνουμε 30 ετών. Αν πεθάνουμε εν τω μεταξύ, πού θα πάμε; Αυτό είναι το θέμα. Όταν ο καλός εκείνος Νικόδημος επήγε και μιλούσε με τον Χριστό μας τη νύχτα, Τι του είπε ο Χριστός μας μόλις μπήκε στην πόρτα;

Αν δεν γεννηθείς εξ ύδατος και πνεύματος, αν δεν γεννηθείς άνωθεν, του λέει, δεν πρόκειται να κάνεις τίποτα. Και αυτός νόμισε ότι πρόκειται να ξαναμπεί στην κοιλιά της μάνας του και να γεννηθεί. Και λέει, πώς είναι δυνατόν, λέει, εγώ τώρα, λέει, γέρος ων, λέει, να μπω στην κοιλιά της μάνας μου και να ξαναγεννηθώ;
